More rain, mountain snow and river flooding on the way for Western Washington
"Storm system impact in western Washington, and this is another one. That reminds us the importance of understanding microclimates and precision. Understanding the various terrain around western Washington. Not everyone is going to be experiencing the same kind of weather tomorrow. I'm here to break down all of the factors for you. Tomorrow afternoon through Wednesday morning, we're gearing up for the possibility for more moderate to heavy mountain snow. In addition, there's going to be some strong winds that could possibly produce him damages or perhaps even some power outages. But in general, those powerful winds, with the exception rather than the rule mostly focused Up toward the northwest interior, the San Juans and the northern coastline elsewhere across the greater Seattle area. It will simply be remembered as a typical winter day Cloudy sky, some scattered rain and breezy conditions. We're not expecting any new flooding issues associated with this next storm can't rule out perhaps a localized urban flooding event, But once more in general, we're not giving up for widespread flooding. Young, the existing flooding. It's happening along just a couple of rivers. Still, though, we will have to monitor the threat, ongoing risk for mudflows, landslides and avalanches. So stick with us as we bring you the latest on all of that So are active weather today is finally starting to stabilize as tonight's weather maker pushes off toward the East and now all eyes out on our next weather maker for tomorrow that's continuing to develop off in the Pacific. This is going to be responsible for a lowland rain mountain snow and localized winds. We still have those flood warnings on going for the show. Hey, list River above Grand Mound and it Porter and these warnings are expected to stay in effect through mid week. We also have this flood warning for this good comics river. Moderate flooding is happening. It's also in the forecast along the shore Hairless River. Minor flooding is happening, and it's expected to continue, at least for the next day and possibly beyond. Future cast calling for drier skies into early tomorrow morning, with the exception to the cows to the Olympic Peninsula, where we're gearing up for that next round of heavy rain, it's out along the Olympics Southwest interior. They will truly get hammered by heavy rain. Meanwhile, here into mid day, most of us are staying dry. So this is going tol ramp up as we go into about three o'clock mountain snow will start to form. We'll be dealing with more of that rain filling in for the I five corridor out along the coast to you Look for the bright colors on the map here in a six o'clock, that's where we could be looking at some excessive rainfall wanted two inches of rain in the forecast there. That's not helping the risk for landslides at all into midnight tomorrow, maintaining the risk for some mountain snow, a bit of lowland rain and finally into Wednesday morning. We try things out Wednesday Thursday going for dry skies. So my friends were managing just one more day of some scattered rain around here. It could be breezy, making tips feel cooler, so dress accordingly. He could track our winds, precept and much war by downloading our free Cos weather app. We will get to enjoy a few sun breaks on Wednesday and full on sunshine by Thursday from start to the finish. "They're made by Carol's of joy, and they're up a little bit west of Portland, Oregon, kind of one of the river there and You know they're made with fresh greens that come from the high country and the high country and Oregon's quite different than here. Here we think of high elevations being 7000 FT. High elevation with Christmas trees are grown. Could be about 500 ft up. So you know when you sit right there and sea level, it doesn't take much of a mountain in the Pacific Northwest to get more rain and grow things and the hunters. Trees are kind of fun to. They originally started harvesting trees that were wild trees that were stumped, cultured off the Olympic Peninsula, and until you've been to the Olympic Peninsula, it's hard to imagine the place. That's that warm. That far north or that wet and you could see why the barest like it. Stay safe with the ex URGENT temporal scanner, the number one preferred thermometer of pediatricians. And we get our forecast now with meteorologist Kristen Clarke. Good morning. Hey, Good morning just to settle change in our Western Washington weather today, a little more cloud cover to contend with, and that's going to keep the temperatures in the forties, a lot different from that sunshine and record setting 60 degree high yesterday at sea attack and also tracking a few light showers longer coastal beach communities. All from a cold front that is literally dissipating offshore today so that rain is going to stay across the Olympic Peninsula not moving into Puget Sound, so another dry date is for maybe stringing up those Christmas lights outdoors local for low clouds to linger into early Friday morning before clearing by lunchtime tomorrow and quiet weather actually continues into the weekend could wake up two more fog in Puget Sound Saturday morning. It's not until early next week that we see the weather pattern change of Abed introducing more cold fronts into the area that results in a good, steady rain Tuesday with rising snow levels, we could see rain even on our mountain passes by the middle of next week, Right, Kristen? "Just sad now. Dudley is expected in court sometime tomorrow. Back to you. Alright, thanks, Tammy. Tomorrow is a weather worn day and it's really going to feel like fallen. What will be the second day of fall, We'll be watching for possible street flooding. And power outages. Look at all that green coming out of the screen here in the radar, meteorology shaded O'Donnell's tracking the timing of the wind and rain. Shannon. Yeah, it's going to get us right out of the gate in the morning, Preston that's for sure. Rain the biggest issue. We've got an atmospheric river. That's just a fancy term for saying there's a big plume of moisture out there. It will keep the rain coming from start to finish tomorrow, so not only the heavy rain also, the urban flooding that comes along with it are rivers. Okay, it's too early in the season to see widespread flooding on our waterways. This komische may come up a little bit, though. But really, it's the street flooding because of clogged storm drains and whatnot. Also the gusty winds as Preston mentioned, you can see the storm already starting to curl in our direction, and as we'll see in a few more minutes, it goes way back out to sea. There's a lot more where that's coming from a wind advisory already in place up and down the ocean beaches where wins, you're going to hell tomorrow 35 to 50 MPH. That's enough to start bringing down some of those weaker branches that have, you know, just lost there over the summer, and then you can end up with the power outages so gusty at the beaches. It also in the interior well timed this out on the future cast you see, here we are. Five in the morning with the rain heavy at the coastline by the middle of the day just continues to pound the Olympic Peninsula and look at how heavy it gets later in the afternoon, right through the metro area, especially outside of Tacoma and Olympia. So 12 punch of wind and rain west of lightning and hail to talk about and will do so in just a few more minutes. All right, Thanks, Shannon. "Welcome to the is on conservation podcast. I'm Gregory. Hatanaka and today for this is on conservation. We have none other than the one the only serene assignments, how you doing Serena I'm great. I also really appreciate the way that introduce people on the show I appreciated the last introduction that you did. So Nice. So. Nice of you. I really appreciate that well I just want to do the best I can to make sure that everybody knows who the real experts are which is. No secret. Not Me so. No you're one of them for sure. Did Watts Oh. Yeah. Oh Yeah. I even know that L. No no I'm just I'm just an enthusiastic cheerleader that's really what it is and the feeling is mutual. Absolutely absolutely mutual. I'm really excited to jump into this interview that you did with Mark L. Brock. Why don't you tell listeners who this is what we're going to be listening to? Yeah mark is amazing and he the the one thing that I really appreciate about mark is he's so articulate. It's it's it's kind of crazy. It's sort of like he knows how to talk to the public and talk to stakeholders all the things that we're GonNa talk about in the interview he's really good at communicating people and communicating all his efforts and his research and and. I don't just from a management perspective as someone who is a wildlife manager everything that he said made a lot of sense and I think it would make a lot of sense to people that don't know a lot about the subject So I was really impressed with him. Mark is a researcher focuses on mountain lions or Pumas cougars whatever you WANNA, call him, and he has been working in this field for. A really long time. So he's really gotten to know the species their behavior and a lot of the conflicts that come with them and living alongside large carnivore like mountain lion. So he wrote an he's written several books but his most recent book is called the Cougar Conundrum and the Cougar conundrum kind of outlines these bigger picture and with great examples, case studies and examples of basically the history of our. You know what he calls a conundrum, which I think is the best word to use this huge problem. That we have been experiencing north, America, surrounding these animals for for hundreds of years. So it's it's really it was great getting to talk to him and I learned a lot You know not just reading the book, but also just talking him and again he has a way with the way that he speaks that it just makes sense and he's very measured and I can just really tell that he he has invested a lot of time. You know working trying to problem solve, but you have to he he's he's the perfect person because he is so measured and listens and I I just think he's he's the best possible person to do what he does. So I'm really excited to have you guys listen to our conversation. That's awesome. Yeah. He's very well spoken and this book if I'm not mistaken, you had a sneak peek at it should be coming out the day after this episode airs Yes. So I, got a sneak peek at it and I got to read it ahead of its release which will be released on August thirteenth. So yeah, the day after this episode gets. and it will be available at any bookseller He mentioned that it would be great. If you know you WANNA contact your local bookshop see if you can get a couple of copies into the store, but it's also available online and wherever you normally get your books. Well, that sounds amazing and let's just jump right into this interview. Why don't we start by you just introducing yourself your name and a little bit about your background. Sure. My Name's Markelle Brooke. I'm a father. And a working biologist and I live in western Washington on the Olympic peninsula where I am part of a massive collaboration with five tribal nations to study mountain lions on the peninsula and how they crossed the interstate five corridor. I also worked for Penn. Thera. I'm the director of the PA- Program Outline programme, whichever were you prefer? and. So I help sort of create new projects identify need identified the conservation issues for mountain lions across their entire range. So we have projects ranging from up here in Washington State all the way down to the southern tip of South America. Wow. So it's a huge I know panther is a huge. Organization it's a global organization. I mean and I know you probably get this a lot. But how did you? How did you get involved with Panther and how did you get involved with mountain lions? Indeed it's You know it's all dumb luck. Great. panthers a as he said, it's a global organization. We work to conserve wildcats and they're landscapes around the world. You know it's How ends up doing what I do is. Is Sort of a circuitous journey. One never really has plans or at least if you do they tend to go out the window and and life happens. So I tell folks because I get asked this a lot. You know you must have always planned to be outlined biologist, and now here you are. Say absolutely not you know you. Have a plan. In the field of wildlife, you may have a goal and what generally happens is an opportunity comes up and you decide to take it or you don't so

another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his But how do you know, if it's the flu or just a bad cold? Komo's Connie Thompson has some general guidelines and tips about using antiviral medication nasty colds are never fun. But the flu can be much more serious. How do you tell the difference? I don't think you can really tell between the cold. Are the flu with a cold? I don't have body chills with the flu. I I'm very achey. When I have a cold. It's more of just like sneezing and coughing. If it's the flu it hits you like a ton of bricks so fast. It comes on. We can come on in a few hours, and you'll likely have added symptoms feeling feverish or having a fever chills muscle aches and extreme tiredness a cold has similar but milder symptoms runny or stuffy, nose cough, sore throat fatigue. And there's this difference. It's still bearable. You can go to work instill have a cold with the flu. You really can't. You want to go to bed? You just feel like you can't move. If you suspect you have the flu health editors that consumer reports say you might want to call your doctor and see if you're a candidate for anti-viral medicine, there's tamiflu or the new anti viral flu's out both work best if taken within twenty four to forty eight hours of getting symptoms and may shortened duration of flu. I want to do. As but so flu only requires one dose where tamiflu requires you take it twice a day for five days. And if you do have the flu to everyone a favor and call in sick, do all you can not to share it. Keep in mind, both antiviral flu. Medications are quite expensive.
