"Just wrote a new yorker column about the pandemics effects on you dominika and the workplace. More on that later in the pod. Now let's get back to the interview so you you have this incredible olympic debut after putting together all these these records and two years later in two thousand fourteen. You have a bad fall and you have permanent nerve damage to your arm. First of all this is like shouldn't even be a comparison that i make but i tore my kelly's in college track and then i was trying to do my own laundry instead of asking for help and i was like using a crush to try to push down the stairs and then i fell down the stairs and i broke my ankle but i didn't really get to do anything because it was my hopping leg and the other one was still in the cast and i was like how in the world did i just take away. The thing that was allowing me to keep getting around in like what's wrong with me like get it together. Spain ask for help next time. How do you feel when you're like what. Now i have to add this to my challenges and rehab this and and you know what's that moment like where you're like. I don't i don't as positive as you seem to be about the challenges that come your way. That must be so. Daunting that to. The point of your story was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back where i was just like you. Swipe your hands up and be like really. I've shown i can handle adversity. I can move through it. I can move beyond. It really need to do this again. Because i'm getting tired and it was. I'll be honest. I i had my moments that might be part in that time around i would say fouling my arm injury. I struggled more than following my paralysis. Because i had fought with everything i had to get to that point. I had lived a male. Become independent travel. The country traveled the world. Like i had basically proven that like my wheelchair was was a vehicle. That helped aid me in everything that i wanted to do. Not confine me and so when this happened it was really tough because in order to do all of those things. I relied on the strength of two strong arms and when the fall initially happened in the early months really couldn't do anything. I was back to not driving because my my car was adapted with hand controls but i need to steer with one arm and accelerate and brake with the other. I didn't have the mobility to steer with my left arm. 'cause at the strength and re redoing those things it's not a small fee right and so i couldn't drive Dressed independently. i couldn't women wheelchair like everything came crashing down with it and that was really difficult. My psyche i Admittedly i remember may of two thousand fourteen. 'as towards like the third week of the month. I was sitting in my parents driveway with my now husband And i said to him i said i. I think it's time we have a serious conversation about retirement. And he knew how badly i wanted to continue my career and he said please just let me make a phone call before you start setting your mind on that. And he called my high school coach. Steve van dyne. He coached high school in the twin cities in minnesota for years he coached tools sisters through high school.

"All right let's talk about usa basketball for a minute usa. Basketball on sunday had its olympic debut and lost which shouldn't be surprised anyone that's watched usa basketball over the last couple of weeks. They had two losses during the exhibition slate to nigeria and australia and now they have a loss on the olympics late. This time to france now. Usa basketball will probably get into the medal round quarterfinals. Whatever it's called. Because they've got iran on wednesday in the czech republic on saturday and those are very winnable games even for a team. That's had some issues. Chemistry was but i continue to sound the alarm about the state of this team. I just don't feel like they have the chemistry needed to win against upper level teams. There are a handful of them out there. I mean we saw france as an upper level team. We've seen australia. Which put the boot to nigeria in their olympic opener. We know spain is still consistent. Argentina can beat you any given night even though their roster headlined by forty-one-year-old luis scola is on the older side i just. Us teams beatable especially when that three point shot is not falling for them. So give me your level of concern right now for usa basketball. I'd say concern is is reasonable. I don't know that there should be all out panic in the streets added. Let's panic panic. I mean time is of the essence. You're right there's not a lot of times or iron things out. But i think these are things that can be ironed out. Let's let's stipulate the obvious things right. This team hasn't had that much time together. There wasn't a lot of carry over from the last version of the olympic team. They're missing a lot of huge stars. You know horan and lebron steph kyri on and on they still have the best talent top to bottom of anybody in the olympic field. Because that's just the nature of it. The us has more mba players than anybody else and more nba stars. Anyone else they had to replace two players. They lost bill and kevin love during training camp. Zach levine was in cova protocols for part of it. Three players were in the finals. It's holiday middleton and booker so they just arrived they get in. You know at one in the morning the same day that they're playing that debut like none of that is great and that's not to say those the only problems and they may you know those maybe problems that plagued him throughout because not a lot of time to now sort things out. But there's enough talent out there between kevin durant and dame lillard and the three guys that just mentioned booker middleton holiday bam out a bio jeremy grant like you know. Zach levine. there's good talent there. They should be able to win games so that'd be there always there's always good talent like and they lost before. Yes it. does this team. How is this team any different than the two thousand nine hundred nineteen like. It's more talented than olympic. Has got durant mostly damian. Lillard mostly what that was a really talented two thousand nine hundred nineteen..

"To be selected to the all star game as both a position player and a pitcher angels manager. Joe matt and confirmed yesterday that otani will both hit and pitch and next game at colorado's cores field. The only remaining questions are about the logistics of otani's appearance at the mid summer classic and whether the major league home run leader will start on the mound for the american league which would allow him to contribute both ways immediately as the pitcher and the designated hitter out to wimbledon now yesterday at the all england club was the last time. We'll see all sixteen. Women's and men's fourth-round singles matches scheduled on the same day eight time champs roger federer coming off a pair of knee operations last season and playing in his last grand slam tournament before turning. Forty is now the oldest wimbledon quarterfinalist in the open era as yesterday straight-set victory moves federer into his record extending eighteenth quarterfinal out the tournament. World number one novak djokovic also advance as winning in straight sets to make it his twelfth quarterfinal the all england club while continuing his pursuit of a calendar year grand slam joke of it seems a needs to win three more matches this week to equal the men's record at twenty major single titles currently shared by federer and rafael wad and jovan bitches and federer's final wimbledon a few years back one of the best. I think i've saying how incredible and let's go the women's side seventeen year. Old american coco goths wimbledon run has ended in the fourth round again falling in straight sets against twenty eighteen champ. Angelique kerber quantum rocco's born to run. You know that's your favorite song now. Born to ri- the boss's daughter is heading to tokyo. Can you believe this. Jessica springsteen daughter bruce springsteen has been named as a member of the us olympic equestrian team the younger springsteen was an alternate writer for the two thousand twelve us team in london and didn't qualify for rio in two thousand sixteen. She now makes her olympic debut as a member of the jumping squad. The twenty nine year old began riding horses at four years old on her family's farm in new jersey she's ranked third on the us writer list and twenty seven th in the world. What do you think about that. A lot of nervous moments for for you and for any parents who children do this well. It's that's congratulations. So let's turn to. This morning's must treat opinion pages for that. We bring in pulitzer winning historian and rogers chair and the american presidency at vanderbilt university. Jon meacham and former chief of staff to the d triple c adrian elrod. She was senior rate to hillary clinton and the biden presidential campaigns. And we'll start with paul krugman's latest for the new york times entitled. It's morning in. Joe biden's america krugman writes in part this at this point. We have enough data in hand to declare that the economy is booming. In fact it's booming so strongly that republicans have pivoted from claiming falsely that we're experiencing the worst job performance in decades to loud the employment numbers in giving credit to trump's 2017 tax cut. The economy is running hotter than it did during the morning in america. Boom that gave ronald reagan a landslide victory in the nineteen ninety-four presidential election. We've gained three million jobs since biden took office or six hundred thousand jobs. A month this compares with gains of three hundred and forty thousand a month in the year leading up to one thousand nine hundred eighty four elections so yes. We are having another morning in america and by deserves more credit for his good morning than reagan ever did or his. Wow that is surprising conclusions. Jon meacham though. I you know whenever i hear the term morning in america the phrase. I always think back not to not to the landslide. Victory were reagan. One forty nine states but the year. Before when ronald reagan's popularity was upside down. He was when he gave a state of the union. He had a forty two percent approval rating in a fifty seven percent disapproval rating. Even going into the fall. John glenn was ahead of him by ten points. Mundell was ahead of him and matchups for the coming year right as as the primary season was starting to heat up so much can change in a year but right now the economy's does seem to be going in the right direction for joe biden. It is one greek question about this example that unites about is reagan could build to a victory of forty nine states. Talk buddy forty. Nine states residents will victory. Now it's as if we're talking about through modeling right. I mean it's just it's so remote. It's it's genuinely mathematically impossible No maybe not that bad. But it's culturally possible. And i think one of the things that throws back to is about the structural partisanship of the era of how many people in in our politics is going to turn on this question of the next five to ten years. How many people are actually movable by the kind of data the kind of facts that krugman writes about. You know whether you voted boerum or against him. Last time are are you as a as a participant in the american process. Are you willing to actually change your mind based on changing circumstance. Which by the way is what we were supposed to do. It was one of the inside so the founding wasn't reason would have a chance against passion. So i don't know what that number is. I don't know if it's five million amount of its ten million of the seventy four million people who voted for president but is a really interesting question. How many folks will actually be moved by back there. It really is. It's still surprising to me. Seventy five million. Americans voted for a guy who was calling for the arrest of his opponent two weeks before the there were so many other things that donald trump did as president that People would have run away from any previous time. But bid adrian. The does seem john's right The political world that we live in now is radically different than the political world. At least said i've grown up in ronald reagan elected twice by landslides. George h w bush elected by a landslide. Then the same people that elected reagan twice elected bill clinton twice those reagan. Democrats came home and helped elect reagan bill clinton twice then helped elect george w bush twice then helped elect barack obama twice. And by the way. Brian bob wasn't like he. He went in the squeaker. I think he's the first democrat to win with over a majority of votes two times since fdr the guy was rolling up tallies fifty three percent. There were massive shifts. These last two elections so people have seemed to have their political feet stuck in cement. Not a lot of crossover voters. Yeah i mean. I think joe meacham brings up a really smart point. Which is is this actually going to be what makes some you know. Republicans who have been you know. Maybe some who actually supported the insurrection. Or sam who have been with trump twice but it with them try twice. Is this going to actually swing them back our direction because not only is the economy. Good joe is you know. But joe biden has created more jobs in the first five months of his administration in the history of job creation in america so really great stats on his side. What does that mean for his reelection. Of course that's a couple years away..

Bystander syndrome that is going on here that so many people are now coming to her defense but it just goes to show that this has been going on for such a long time and i'm just glad that brittany is still with us to be honest because all the stuff that she has gone through in the public eye under so much scrutiny and ridicule. I don't know how she survived it but she is still here as she is asking for help so please give it to her okay. I thought it was so funny. What what davidson had to say about the entire thing because pete davidson is another celebrity. That's sort of been in a lot of he he's turmoil yeah he's had some. He's had some issues. I love me. Some davis another me that i'll okay when head to alka and i liked him before he was like either pete david like before he was he too. I like i followed his like career. So i knew who he was before he was like before saturday night. Live four four all of that okay. Who he was before. They're not thought he was just so cute. And i listen. I listen i put opponent tila my head listening because listen pay peter. Hello but he said he said. My mom and i were watching that brittany spears documentary but it has a turn it off and i realized my mom was like way. More has more of a case to take over my finances ever did. I was like wait. She could do it and she hasn't doesn't she loved me. All britney spears did with shave her head. I get i got a life size. Tattoo of the tootsie pop owl so i thought that was just so hilarious and was like yes like everybody is making mistakes out here. Like celebrities are just famous and so they they're mistakes are broadcast. You know what i mean. But that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to live her life. Everybody else and i mean. I want to make the case that i feel like if britney were bryan spears. I don't. I don't think we will be going through this. I like i honestly feel like and again. In my opinion. I also feel like it's because she's a woman i also feel like you know. They're like all her. Dad knows best used like you know like our dad can't be abusers like our dad can't steal from us like your family sometimes. It's not the worst people for you. Yes i mean the way that entire thing because the shaving. Your head was one thing but the width that that entire story about like her you chasing the paparazzi with our umbrella to hitting the way that that was portrayed as if she was like some deranged creature if that was a man if that was a man beating away some paparazzi because they were tired of it. Then i'm like yes that 'paparazzi deserved it. No it's crazy. Lunatic brittany with a umbrella beat up a paparazzi like and when you watch the documentary to know that she was denied a visit. Her children have been taken away from her. It was supposed to be a day for a visit. The kevin would not allow the kid like kevin would not allow her to see the kids. She's driving back with her friends at gas station. Stop at the gas station and 'paparazzi pulled up and she said bassett Yep like you know. She said she's she's what do you want from her like. I can't so here on a podcast. We scream free brit. Nay okay and in. I just feel like the transitions. Today are amazing In the sense of you know keeping with the out dated and law And rules that needs to be updated. chakari richard. Thin is on the menu. this week. you know. I had literally jif may have freak a week last week. You know for making the like you know the trial. Brian are going to olympics. And then the news broke that she tested positive for marijuana and could jeopardize her olympic debut essentially and listen black twitter and the black community has riled around chakari and is essentially like the hashtag. Let her run and you know. I tweeted out. Let horon and there were so many people like she broke raw shot at bay. Right hang died. I mean like marijuana was like a like a performance enhancing. Okay okay so first of all. Let's just be real yes. She broke the rule and there should be consequences absolutely like the. I'm not disputing their. Okay but what i am. Begging is that you ain't never run a red light in your life. You ain't never cheated on a test you went like you know what i mean like like stop it and i'm just saying i so there's just so much i wanted to say but i feel like one coudl to sakari for not you know seeing the momentum that she has had it would have been easy for someone to want to ride this momentum and play the victim however she has taken accountability has omitted. Yes at took edible And like you know. I'm i will take the consequences that come with it however you know. She also details that she was doing an interview and found out through the interview. Live on the interview that her biological mother had died and it triggered her and she was with people and they was like girl needs to be fired. Okay and one of her friends was like. Here's a epo here. And she did that to mask the feeling of what she was going through at that time and it was legal and and a place that it was legal. Okay so i might. My thing is is that okay and then somebody tweeted this article of this like a couple of olympics like this one lady says the positive for steroids and she couldn't participate in olympics. Yes because she was taking out formats and has and if anything marijuana will make you slow marijuana like it ain't nothing that that marijuana dooby right right. That's going to be her up. And i just feel like you know and now you know. I'm one for stretch. So please feel free to gather the me amman. And this comparison that. I'm going to make a. I just feel like this is very reminiscent of our criminal justice system that has black and brown people in jail for thirty to forty years for marijuana. That's now legalized that now. Companies are making multimillion dollars off for me. This is this ruling just seems very like i don't know i don't think that that's a stretch at all. I think i think you're exactly right. I think now on one hand i understand. I understand the board of directors of the olympics. I get it like you want all athletes to be able to perform at the best of their ability without the without the effects of any sort of drugs in their system because these are athletes. He's supposed to be the top athletes in the world. And so whenever they come together to compete. You want all of them to be optimum level. I understand that. But if that's the case then you need to ban them from drinking banned from smoking. Cigarettes ninety need to ban them from whatever other drugs. That are out there that that that are legal for you to do. You need to ban them from all of it because if you want if you want these specimens to be within their tip top shape and form with with no altering effects than van it all to me. This feels very much. Like oh my god. This little black girl is is selling. Is smoking drugs. Oh my god. She's horrible getting out of here. It's giving very much that because wasn't there a whole scandal about michael phelps. Doing the same thing of i did just want to bring this to the posse because people keep making that that accusation and i just wanna say Michael phelps tested positive months after his olympics and his medals were stripped and he you know went through a a super about like he went through a pro.
