"The many athletes of Chinese dissent here at the Beijing games represent the many variations of the Diaspora, some are one, two or many generations removed. Others are biracial and multicultural. And even similar backgrounds can diverge on the Olympic stage. For example, Nathan Chen and Eileen goo are two superstar athletes fronting the winter games, while both were born and raised in the U.S. by Chinese immigrants and have fond memories of spending time in their ancestral homeland. Chen is competing for the U.S. team as a metal contender in men's singles figure skating and goo is the hot shot freestyle skier competing for China. Gu has raised eyebrows for switching to the China team after training with the U.S. team. But the San Francisco native who speaks fluent Mandarin and makes yearly trips to China with her mom, is clear eyed about how she defines herself. When I'm in China, I'm Chinese. Goo told the Olympic channel in 2020 when I'm in the U.S. I'm American. For some, the Olympics in Beijing is the first time they'll set foot in China and unforgettable professional accomplishment on top of a very personal milestone. That's the case for U.S. women's singles figure skater Alyssa Liu, whose father Arthur Lew also longs to visit China, the elder Liu left his home country in his 20s as a political refugee because he had protested the communist government following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. I so much want to go to the games and go back to China to visit my hometown, says Arthur Lew in a phone interview from his home base in California. I so much want to go back to the village I grew up in to go to the high school that I went to. The college I went to. I so much want to go and have the spicy noodles on the side of the street. Arthur Lou eventually settled in the Bay Area, put himself through law school and nurtured one of America's most promising athletes. Now, his Chinese American daughter is set to make her Olympic debut in the women's singles competition. He has no qualms about her competing in the Olympics in China and no resentment toward a home country he still loves. Like many biracial children, Alyssa Liu used to wonder why she didn't look like her parents, though she is always identified as ethnically Chinese..

"Is by looking at the schedule and seeing the emblem next to it and being like, oh, this is a commissioner's cup game, I guess. And it doesn't really set it apart from any other game other than it's got the icon next to it. And it just feels like they need to put some more stakes on. So that's really nice that it feels like maybe even if it's just like, hey, this game is on ESPN in prime time, and it is a commissioner's cup game. Then it's like, oh, it's on TV. People are going to watch this game. I don't know. We'll have to think about that in the future, but before we hit number 5, Jason, we had a few, a few more that hit our radar that didn't quite make our top 21. Why don't you go ahead and hit us with some of the honorable mentions? Yes, I'm going to hit you with honor will mentions we have 6 of them and these are in no particular order, so don't take the order as having any significant. These are just the 6 things that didn't quite get ranked high enough to make it in the top 21. Starting off, I'm gonna go with the three by three Olympic debut. Courtney van der sloot's triple double and double over time to get a playoff win over the sun. Diana is so good. Can I end up added with Courtney van der sloot's reaction live on TV to finding out? She's a triple double in that game. That made it so much more. I love this. Yeah. Okay. Diana Rossi's 14 point fourth quarter to clinch a final spot. Heck yeah. Can nurse with her half court shot? Yeah. The 20 hell yeah. The 25th forgot that the 25th anniversary team reveal and the one 44 documentary. Take that. What are you guys want? Yeah. Man, there was some world one 44 probably ends up making my list and I'm just mad that I forgot about it, but also my more documentary. I mean, my goodness. Oh, I completely forgot about that. What are your for films? The three X three, the three X three Olympic, that I enjoyed that format so much more than I expected to. And what ticked me off is I missed the first game and almost all of the second game simply because I didn't realize that the games went so fast. I thought, oh, it's on I'll hop on and check it here in just a little bit. And I would hop on and it would be over. And I was like, oh, like, the format made it so quick. But it was so much fun. We haven't had a chance to interview stuff, dulce afterwards, and that was a lot of fun. I want to find a way to incorporate three X three into the league somehow, whether it's a mini tournament, whether it's something over all star weekend. It's just. You know I watched that first season of big three that ice cube put on. And it was all right. And three X three the way that its structured traditionally, it just perfects that style of basketball. It's so much fun to watch, especially if you're a basketball nerd. If you're an exes and nose nerd, it's Paradise. I love watching it. If this is a tangent that again, it's probably better for different episodes, but I'll just do it really quickly. I think it would be really fun if they added as part of all star weekend, like a three on three tournament, because my hometown of Salem Oregon is.

"You got any sky browns in your group I'm not my group yet because it's We're focused on like beginner lessons. But there's some girls around the city that are really really good Fe everts one like a name that most people would know in the toronto community because she's extremely good and competing and it. Yeah it's really inspiring to a lot of people not just kids and the canadian sense. Skateboard is to the olympics did they. Yeah yeah yeah any goglia She's from I don't wanna say it wrong. But i'm pretty sure Montreal and she went there for canada all right so this is a this is a life thing for for young girls to aspire to the envelopes. You started base for gate is a safe place for girls to skate. But can you reflect a little more about what it is about skate. Parks that make them intimidating to girls and women. Yeah so it's definitely just like one unknown territory you know it's very unfamiliar to you It's the feeling like you're not good enough to be there. That's common one. That i hear like on just learning. I don't wanna be in anyone's way and there's definitely ways to get around that And then the you know Male dominated aspect of that as well. It's just like okay. I'm uncomfortable in my own skin right now. I don't know if i know how to skate properly. I don't wanna be judged. And hey i'm the only girl here so definitely is like multiple factors okay. So you're the wise one. What advice would you give to girls who are feeling intimidated or discouraged to go and take it up. I mean i think it's the same as anything else. It's like you still have to kind of push through and find that confidence in yourself. I think a lot of people tell themselves things that aren't necessarily true you know and that's what comes from the anxiety behind it so when you're telling yourself i'm not good enough. Other people are going to judge me. I can tell you that nobody's actually watching you most likely you know what i mean like. It's a pretty supportive community and so that stuff that we tell ourselves in our heads and those are roadblocks that you'll have in regards to anything you do. So i think at the end of the day it comes down to being confident and knowing that you belong there so tell me what. It looks like. Then in the skateboard parks these days. I mean has it become more inclusive more welcoming to women of color and queer people over the last few days. Yeah so. I found that like when i started this around six years ago. Funny enough there are other people like all around the world that were doing similar things. So now there's more meet up and groups like my own and there's definitely you'll see more girls at the park when now see like a group of friends Four or five different girls or women that are at the park already and if they didn't need me to do a meet up they you know created that on their own and so yeah absolutely that supports their now more than ever for sure. What so is there anything in your mind. That still needs to change. Well i mean. I'm liking that there's more exposure now for women that are like Getting sponsored so. I think more companies sponsoring more women More skate shops doing the same thing. Creating the same prize money when there's competitions because that money is what allows these girls to go and compete at other competitions. Where historically the men make a lot more money off of it than women. That's not fair at all I think there should be more women working for these big gay companies and magazines and stuff like that more photographers that are females should be getting published in escape magazine. So yeah there's definitely a lot of things that can change so are do so. Can you actually make a living as a skateboarder. Why i mean i make a living doing what i'm doing can skate lessons. Which is awesome but that is kind of like part of it too with it being in the olympic i'm starting to see now that there are more opportunities for you to get sponsored and get paid sponsorships and clouds and you know there's definitely more of that kind of stuff happening so yeah. I mean like skateboarding in general. It's very hard to become a pro like that's not. It didn't happen for everyone but it can happen. One hundred percent for sure. All right stephanie. Thanks for skateboarding us. Through all of this. I really appreciate your time. My pleasure stephanie. Batiste is the founder of babes brigade for more. Cbc podcasts goto. "Oh app that time for getting back together is now from npr and wb. You are. I'm peter o'dowd and i'm callum borders. It's here now. The search for survivors in the rubble of the champlain. Tower south is officially over today with dozens. Still missing two weeks after the building collapsed authorities in surf side. Florida made the call yesterday noting. No one had been pulled alive from the wreckage since the early hours after the condo tower fell on june twenty-fourth the rescue and recovery mission has been agonizing for those who lost loved ones pablo. Rodriguez is one of them. His mother and grandmother went missing in the disaster and he joins us now. Pablo welcome back to here and now. Thanks for speaking with us again. Thanks for having me. Pablo first responders have been digging through the rubble for two weeks now. Often in extreme weather conditions do you think is appropriate to call off the search for survivors at this point To be honest. For for me. And i know i'm not the only family member that that's had this thought because i've talked to other family members. It's it's been This is really just the semantical change on on language because it's been a search and recovery since since day one for us. it's disheartening. But it's you know the the reality of what we saw when the when we saw that video of the towers collapsing So i'm hoping that they're able to to move quickly now in this phase and try to locate are missing loved ones At the same time. I wanna thank them because i mean you said for two weeks nonstop twenty four hours a day. The conditions that they've been working under our horrific So it takes a physical and emotional toll on them. Their families and i just want to thank them for doing their duty. Because it's it's amazing what they do. Yeah you told us last week that you've been praying for a miracle but that you did fear the worst and i wonder now that the search is officially called off whether you feel any sense of closure or whether that's impossible still because your and grandmother are still officially missing. Haven't been recovered it. That's that's right for me. The beginning of closure. I can't even start that process knowing that. I'm sitting around waiting for a phone call. That's that's going to come. And it doesn't make receiving that phone call when it comes in easier. But it's an until. I received that the wait is just excruciating and very difficult to try to even begin to move on pablo last night. There was a vigil for family members and rescue workers and surf side. I understand you were not there but you did spend that time with your family. I wonder how you're finding support from them in this difficult time. We're kind of leaning on each other. Everybody's you know. It was my mom and my grandmother but everybody lost some different in that situation My son's grandmother and great grandmother. It's my uncle sister and his mom. It's so everybody lost even though it's the same people. Everybody lost somebody different But we're all experiencing that loss and our friends or family has been extremely supportive. They set up meal trains. They've come to take our son out to to keep them entertained. Got them happy meals. Take them to the park So we've had a good support system in place To try to help us cope with this but again really just sitting around waiting makes it excruciating pablo. We're learning that. Your mother was one of several condo owners in that building. Who were complaining about lack of maintenance. There are still so many questions unanswered about how this could happen. What do you want to see happen next in terms of accountability for this disaster. There's yes my mom complained often. There were several owners complained often about the maintenance. I mean this was a building that received over a million dollars a year in maintenance fees and you see the pictures of the condition. The building was in. Its you know the first question. I have is. Where was that money going. And i hope that there's a proper investigation into that. That's the first thing of accountability. I'd like to see happen. The second is actual reform so that this doesn't happen again as you're seeing with evacuations of some other buildings in the area. This is preventable by doing more inspections by having proper people who have capacity looking into these issues A little concerning those hearing the governor in the last meeting saying well maybe this was just a one off situation. And there's really no need for a statewide inspection process If i'm a condo owner. And i'm i'm living in one of these buildings. I wanna make sure that it's safe. And if you're buildings properly maintained i don't see how that's really onerous standard for for the owners or the board or or anyone else. It's just you're going to inspect the building if you've been doing what you're supposed to do. There's not really much else you need to do. If you're not it's going to catch it and and give you an opportunity to fix it before you have another horrible event like this. That's pablo rodriguez. Whose mother and grandmother are still missing in surf side and pablo. Thank you so much for opening up and speaking with us again and we're just so sorry for what you're going through and you will more than a thousand coal miners in alabama are now in their fourth month of a strike. They say their employer warrior met. Cole has failed to make good on a promise for better benefits and still backed by the united mine workers of america. They stopped working. That was in april and months later. The two sides are still very far from deal. Stephen visa has been reporting on this for wb in birmingham and he joins us now. Welcome thanks for having me. I understand you've visited the picket line over the holiday weekend. What are you hearing from workers there. They seem a little bit more tired than they were just a month ago. But they're still pretty defiant. They're mostly motivated by what they're going betrayal by the company Someone described me as a slap in the face. This goes back to five years ago. It was a group called walter energy that owned the minds at the time and they went bankrupt like a lot of coal mines around twenty fifteen twenty sixteen Across the company and like allow those minds new came in warrior met coal in this case and they offered a deal to workers essentially said. We're going to give you a worse contract. You have to make some concessions less pay worse benefits but the ideas. That's going to help us get back on her feet. That's going to help us. Actually keep your jobs and hopefully things do better and five years will offer you better contract well..
