He told and I believe this is sheriff, had told the person from the news. He says, I like to think in western Washington state. We did a pretty good job prior to this legislation of managing our police pursuits, but when the politicians and Olympia got involved and changed the way we do business, it's just not working out.

"Talk dancing with the stars controversy. It's igniting over whether or not olympia j deserves to be contested. She's a daughter of laurie. Lachlan and they've been wrapped up in this whole college admissions scandal. Now we just talked to host tyra banks who said give girl chance. Listen to this. Olivia jade super brave. I think she's super brave to come out. I think she's like i'm tired of people talking about me. It's time for me to tell my story. And i'm going to do it on national television and i'm going to do dancing with the stars. Ought to be right there with her helping her to tell her story. There's just so much tire knows about controlling that narrative also likes underdog to you know what i mean Yeah but she's she's like okay. This girl she's gone through it like we've been talking about it. She has been crucified for all of the things that she and her parents and whoever advise them did and you know i was a teenage. We were all teenagers once and we didn't make the best decisions all the time but we were on some crazy platform all the time. I mean maybe you guys were not all your rate. Also she was influenced by adults. She didn't make these decisions by herself. So errands told this was the thing to do because again they were advised to do that. And i think. And i said this two and a half years ago when we were talking about this this is starting to rival khloe interest with the amount of time. We've spoken about it. But they're from a very affluent area in los angeles. And i think that was part of the culture where every family was like. We're gonna get our kids in college and this is how you do it. The Importance of Having A Clear Vision Towards Your Goals
"The end of the day it starts with a clear vision. I didn't make this up. I actually picked up from out of all people. Arnold schwarzenegger arnold schwarzenegger is probably the best example. I can think of when it comes to vision. He says it's very important to have a very clear. Simple vision that you can look at the. You can imagine your head in a second because that's your driving force for him. He had multiple visions so at start. It was becoming mr olympia. Which is the highest title for a bodybuilders. And then he wanted to become an a list actor and then he the fill that vision that he wanted to be the governor of california which is the largest state in the us. And i think the eighth largest Economy by gdp in the world. And i picked this up in his book. Total recall his autobiography And it's really important because there are days that are tough. There are days that are harder than others were. You're required to do things each just don't feel like doing Your might be a little burnt out. You might be a little bit tired and might be dealing with are annoying thing and I often have to go back to the vision and say to myself okay. This is what i'm doing this for. This is why it's worth me going through this slog a little bit because it's one step closer to my vision by doing this. It gets me closer to my vision. And that's how arnold schwarzenegger puts it together like every rep. He did got him. Closer to mr olympia. Every set he did gone closer to that. You know that title.

Hundred thousand casualties in olympia. Fantasia positioned approximately where seattle would be on a map of earth. Most of these casualties were innocent. People attacked in their very own homes. The olympia massacre ushered in the phantom league to public consciousness. The phantom league was a group of militant guerrilla forces who did not belong to any country but instead conducted violent terrorist acts in a bid to essentially bring down society and build it back up in their image. The phantom league was so dangerous because it wasn't as simple as country against country. This was a war on terror of people versus people. Everyone was drafted into the fight. Whether they asked to be a part of it or not your neighbor friend brother everyone you trusted could be someone angry enough savage enough and selfish enough to follow the phantom leagues influence. All nations including the bloodborne empire declared war on the phantom league following the olympia massacre but again because phantom league had a covert base of operations and members secretly operating in a lead government posts. It wasn't as simple as sending troops off to fight on the front lines overseas. The war front with everywhere guerilla attacks. Suicide bombings curses toxins and improvised explosive. Devices were the phantom league's main weapons of warfare. The olympia massacre might have been the date when they made themselves known as a group. But if you examine the acts of terror throughout history in the technological age you'll see that they had been gaining steam and dissembling. Their forces through small terrorist acts for decades. The phantom leagues influence stretched even into earth with groups like al qaeda isis and extremist groups in america being controlled by the secretive and violent regime..

'My Body, My Choice': Healthcare Workers Protest State Vaccine Mandate
"High right and choose what I'm gonna do with my body, My body. My choice, the same argument used by pro choice activists adopted by anti vaccine mandate protesters in Pula. I think it should be choice I'm vaccinated. My daughter is not, And I think it should be her choice whether she would like to be vaccinated or not. They are against the governor's vaccine mandate for all healthcare workers. The large crowd gathered at an intersection drawn there by a conservative Christian group on Facebook, the same group that promoted stop the steal protests in Olympia back in January, which coincided with the insurrection at the US Capitol 2.5 hours north in Bellingham, another group protested outside of a hospital over the same vaccine mandate issue. Cairo radios Nicole Jennings reports from Peace Health Saint Joseph Medical Center. The States mandate health workers have until mid October to get the vaccine or say goodbye to their jobs. Bellingham protester Frank says the mandate violates those workers rights and that it's an especially bad idea during a health workers shortage. We need doctors and nurses. We don't eat less of them, especially to be fired. You're taking something they choose not to do that's truly insane. Peace health says the vaccines have proven themselves to be safe and effective and that it's imperative for their caregivers who are medically able to get the

"That's in place for us. I hope you get rid of some scotch grooms everywhere here here so we don't have to use pesticides because they do that. But you know there are some pollinator species. I like it. Especially birds the honeybees liked the pollen from a tube. It's just horrible now for anybody. Who's not familiar with it. I promise not to take up too much of your time this afternoon. But i did want to ask after working with this for the last many months and as you starting to roll this out words of advice for other communities who are considering it s year community member. Find the right person to talk to win. It might not be obvious. So find the right person in your municipality or government if you are a you know a government employ. It's not as difficult as it seems they give you quite a bit of time to meet the qualifications and again you once you are looking. You'll see opportunities everywhere so it's not as difficult as as you might initially see looking at the qualification is is a big investment. Now it's not it takes some of our time for sure but its habitat planning time that we do anyway and we should be looking for ways to preserve pollinator habitat or or three create or restore anyway as part of our habitat planning so basically our expenses the annual fee. And maybe a little bit of administrative time. Yeah not not a heavy lift if you said no it's worked at your mostly do anyways and it gets you in touch with a lot of resources that might not otherwise have and You know different and another community. Air another group of people who are passionate about something which is never a bad thing. Sounds like a wonderful program and a wonderful wonderful way to spend some time and get a great sign it to boot. Everybody's happy putting the bees. Happy views are good. We like that. Well thank you very much for taking time after. You've talked with us and beekeeping. Today podcast. In i look forward to seeing signed here. Welcome back be city usa. I feel special now. Olympia is on the map. Yeah you should. that's a that's a pretty cool thing. Fun fun program to do. Molly was Food had lots of information. Good information And i'm thinking you don't even have to. You can even have an ordinance against keeping bees and be obesity. So you know. They're pretty all inclusive. Yeah they are. I know i. I'm not to get down into political muck. But i know sie society. Some people have a problem with them because there's the whole native pollinator versus non native pollinator and honeybee is a non native. Somehow people got servcies mixed up in that but they do a lot of work. That's really good for the honeybee. And i think folks should lean on them as a valuable resource Going forward and and this be city. Usa is and be campus is To example are two examples of the great work that they do promoting pollinators. Yep i couldn't agree more and and They seem to job be good at what they were doing. I like this one thing. We didn't talk about very briefly. If if you're gonna let your lawn go in. May you know we talked about the no may or whatever it is. You're gonna do it. Whatever month works for you. A good trick to do is to moa maybe a two more with around the edge of your lawn let the middle grow up but keep the edge clean and neat and you'd be surprised so many people don't care them. The edge looks needs so interesting. I i it makes perfect sense. You know you you look at is got a and he's got a flower garden in there because but he is mowing. He's just ignoring all of this. So there is a very nice yard in As as you drive into olympia and there's a capital and you drive down the hill just before you get to the edge of the hill where you drive down past the capital. There's a house. That is always just chock full of native plants and pollinators never mode. But it looks really nice and i think that if you They show that demonstrates to me that if you approach it as a natural yard as opposed to just let me go to weed and look horrible. You can have a no mow yard. That looks nice in a city setting. Does that make sense. Yes it doesn't honeybees. Enjoy it just as much as all the rest of the native pollinators out there. Yeah yeah and the. Bumblebees and hummingbirds and It's it's a it's a great thing to do Really fun having molly on the show. Today it was so. Thank you molly. "Certification to see what it was all about. What are the benefits of becoming. Obesity was city of olympia. Had to prove this. So what did you describe to them as the benefits of becoming obesity. Usa certified. I think we've seen Definitely an increased interest in pollinator preservation and people interested in the disappearance pollinators and what citizens there are the community can do about that and this was something that is very similar to our tree city. Usa certification actually with arbor day foundation so The benefits are that we have acknowledged the play of pollinators and that we have a role to play in that and that we can also get the community involved in things that preserve pollinators and their habitats. And really it's part of our philosophy in the stewardship department and Also as you and i were talking kind of once she see it. It's everywhere and it. It blends into a lot of the other projects for example. We're gonna do some planting of pollinator habitat which will allow us to reduce our mowing. Which is a big deal in and around town the medians. They're replacing the mediums. Y not do something for pollinators. Those median strips are the tree line tree lonzo areas as opposed to just planning travel or doing something that requires more maintenance or there's a little benefit. Yeah there's a lot of opportunities to like that kinda thing we won't be able to take every opportunity but definitely at are are working our way into that very cool. And how long has the city been working towards the certification. It was i was gonna say spring of two thousand nineteen when it first came to my attention and that's how long They of course last year delayed everything so. We think that i'd have more time to work on it. That i didn't and so we Just got Certain actual certification is beginning this year and then in the next two years. We have time to meet all of the qualifications. That molly probably told you about was very complimentary of the work that you're doing so that was exciting. Yeah i kind of get down there. And so what are some of the any key projects you would like to highlight sarah. So there's a couple of things we've been doing Like i mentioned we work with volunteers and one of our volunteers was so excited that he dug out the bottom of a kettle that we have at one of our parks can gravel spoils area and he planted an entire native pollinator garden from seed. So we're kind of waiting to see how things go the way that the weather has van. But that's how excited he was so that's one of our projects. I mentioned. We have a couple of things where we're looking at planting So that we will reduce mowing and we also just recently applied for a grant for sensory gardens. So sensory gardens are places where people especially people experience in some sort of disability can go and Have access to sights. Sounds smells You know touch and tastes so all of the senses and we can have as part of that included pollinator habitat wonderful so either way even if we don't get the ground we're going to work on those and that'll give chance for equitable opportunities for people to view pollinators especially native exactly sounded great. So you you're working with community groups are you. How are you finding the group to work with for that group. It's really an equity and inclusion project so far for those groups will be with Some advocacy groups for parents have chosen with disabilities and A couple of other partners that we have in the community. We haven't really We've done a little bit of work with the garden. Olympia garden club. And then also i just spoke with olympia. Lions club about their pollinator about visa. Usa and what it means bruce. Good community involvement would big plus. I'm sure yes. I think i. I fell in the future. It'll be something that i pursue more. Were still recovering a little bit. So for example for pollinator week this year. I just tweeted out some facts. Kind of a you know a soft opening to our to our city. Usaa certification but it was something and We again are as we plan. Our habitat projects are. Volunteers are involved in those so there will have some information for sure. Cool good pollinator weeks. Really big for beekeeping today podcast because we we started on the podcast pollinator week twenty eighteen every year we celebrate. That's that's our anniversary Week speak as. I'm wearing the t shirt now. One of the cool things about be be sitting. Us as signed so and and we'll get a picture of you holding a sign here for the city of olympia. But where does the city for cease posting these signs. So it's a street sign I'm going to hopefully have it at one of the entrances to the city. But honestly it's so beautiful. I want one for our building is law. So i'm gonna have to contact mauleon c and the pollen your garden signs. They gave us are also beautiful. So there Yeah so street sign. That's a requirement and then maybe another one buildings will they be just one or you don't put them in several key. I'll start with one If you've ever there's a little bit of sign overload as you come and i want it to be impactful. Will you have the opportunity to get the logo placed on some of the parks and recreation website. Or it can. Is there that opportunity passively. So one of the things that has a requirement of e city say is having an online piece and so i'm still working on that in that might look like for us. We have a couple of platforms. I citizen are for community. Engagement and I haven't quite figured out. I two years or year and a half still so i haven't. That's one thing that i haven't done along with some of the other policy review and we have Our parks though one of the requirements is an ipm's or integrated pest management and our parks are pesticide-free and the only time that we have pesticides are when we have noxious leads that have to be legally controlled. Another train team comes in and does that so my coworker. Sam baker is the one that led that initiative. So luckily that's.

That's a great question Believe we're currently at two hundred sixty six total affiliates and it's pretty evenly split. We have a few more cities than campuses. The city program started in two thousand twelve and the campus program was twenty fifteen. So city program got low more momentum going early And then we have affiliates in forty four states that were were trying to get up to all. Fifty states are missing a few so hopefully some of our listeners. I can tell you which states event anywhere listeners. In their states you get extra bold stars if you become an affiliate so they're alaska which has an amazing number of bees. Especially bumblebees hawaii. Which i've been joking. I really wouldn't mind going and doing little advertising in hawaii i'm out Arizona which is also a huge hotspot for needed diversity and then oklahoma. Kansas and rhode island do you. Are you in any other countries. We're just in the us at this point. There's a similar program in. Canada called bc canada and they have a campus program as well and they they started a after be city usa and the founder vis-a-vis styles helped the founder of the candidate that start up program. So there's a lot of overlap that supper again. You know over the years. I've driven through a few be cities and and every one of them that i've been in somewhere in the city had a great big sign that says bc city. Where do i get one of those whence he elliott elliott. We provide you with the the artwork files to great designs. So there's a street sign that you can download and then we recommend contacting a local print shop to get made and then we also make a custom affiliate logo so it looks like the national one but it will have your city name in stated that can be used however so often they them for fundraising or if they make a certain things they can use that affiliate that That logo whereas ours is a little more restricted. And it's just use for the street signs. So i could have it on the city's webpage and if people wanted to find out about it click here and find out all about Well jeff's you're a you're a b. city out and olympia there Have you seen that logo on your webpage. You know. I haven't been to city olympia website. that's a good question in about a month ago. All right good well. now. I don't feel like such a doofus for not knowing that for sure that they They have it bet is interesting out. Well i wanna. I want to offer any of our listeners. Who live in alaska hawaii arizona. Oklahoma kansas rhode island. Those are the the five states that right five five six states that do not have obesity program if you're listener and you get your city listed as an affiliate i'll make sure you get a beekeeping. Today podcast mug or t shirt whichever you want but you have to work with molly and get your city. Be the first city listed in that state narrow. There is a challenge. Good idea. I think of it. Yeah there's a challenge for you. You mentioned the fact that you're in portland and so you know the portland area. The oregon area If i took a quick look. I know we've got almost a dozen Be cities and campuses in here in ohio but if one of those cities another one of those cities decided to to join up The committee came to you and said well we. We want to do some native plantings. We've got some. We've got some space we want to do. It's part of our commitment. We're going to increase native plants and decrease some of the grass that we've got some of those things. What do you know about ohio plants. I personally know. Essentially nothing about ohio plants but fortunately there seats dafna quite a bit so i would connect them with the expert in that region rather than i pretend to know something but i think people much birth i can ask them to actual expert but we do have people who are happy to share play lists sursee society has plant lists for each region of the country of native plants so i can connect people with resources and with people who them and looks. Good okay well. I was told long ago that it's not important to know everything. But it's more important is to know where to find the information so you're doing okay and let affiliates at all states. It's pretty hard to to know everything in all the states that we have the resources in the field. So so do you guys. But i do some What would you call it. Ongoing education as as as knowledge increases as as things evolve in terms of. I mean we were talking here recently. Do he cared was with the honeybee health coalition and they are seriously looking at the differences in the changes that are going to happen because of climate change And i'm gonna guess you're going to have the same issues with all pollinators. Are you looking at some of those things to to keep people up to speed ever really encouraging when he planting to really think about about being very local with the plants they're choosing so making sure they're selecting plants that are adapted to that region of for example. If you're in one of our affiliates in santa fe new mexico they could go pick a plant that is theoretically need it but it's really type of that native it's not native to that region so it's not drought tolerant or it's it doesn't have the actual abuse that really makes a bro while pacific region so we're encouraging people to pick the plants that really are going to work in their area and make those drought plant. You know. make the decisions of plants. That are going to work. Well their assignment change. And you're not thinking plants. That are already kind of mismatched. And you're going to have issues when you have the changing to the circle society has these regional plantlets. I've looked at them often. Are they reflecting. These changes planned lists question We can look at them and update them. I'm not directly involved in creating this weightless so i'm sure it's something that we're thinking about and will continue to update in the future. So do you guys have ongoing education. Webinars some kinds of events Once i've become a a abi city as i say tree city once i become a beast city. You're going to keep me up to speed and you're not only going to do it just by working with my committee but offering things for the whole community. That's.

"If unions are dying in the united states than someone forgot to tell washington labor leaders about their demise the state ranks fifth in the nation for union membership and that strength can translate into political power. In fact organized labor has helped democrats solidify one party rule in recent years and in turn unions have notched a series of legislative victories. Olympia correspondent austin jenkins reports in collaboration with the seattle times on the rising influence of unions. Right here in washington state. No further amendments. Look he was march of two thousand eighteen lawmakers in the washington house of representatives. We're about to debate one of the most contentious pieces of legislation of the year and goes substitute senate. Bill six one nine nine on it had to do with state funded homecare workers. These are people who bathe dress and feed elderly or disabled adults in their own homes. The legislation aimed to privatize this quasi-public workforce democrats don't usually push for privatization but state representative tana. Senn said in this case it would benefit the workers and their clients with this bill. We are reducing the paperwork so that we can increase care but that argument rang hollow for minority republicans. Who insisted the bill was about something else. Ensuring that homecare workers couldn't opt out of paying union. Dues this is nothing more than a payback to a union that was republican state representative. Joyce mcdonald getting gaveled down for impugning. The motives of the bill's supporters in the end house democrats passed the homecare bill without a single republican vote in fact. Republicans were so incensed. They refuse to vote on the bill. A move rarely seen that. Vote in two thousand. Eighteen sent a message. Democrats were back in control and olympia. After several years of divided control if the end of the two thousand eighteen session unions heralded the passage of bills that had previously been bottled up under split control. Equal pay voting rights prevailing wages and bargaining rights in the years since democrats have grown their majorities and continue to approve union backed legislation some of it high profile much of it. Well below the radar. I think one of the things that we're seeing is a real effort. A concerted effort to take advantage of the fact that the governor the senate and the house are all democrats at the moment. This is professor. Kim england directs the harry bridges center for labor studies at the university of washington. She says washington has bucked the national trend of declining union membership in large part because of the state's robust public sector and service worker unions..

"Her thing was being recognized for it. She didn't publicize her doings or gain anything from them. She was just present and doing the work like a normal person. She kept her circle of friends and coworkers. Small and close by the teacher in new york university drama department for many years. She often brought former students to work with her. And for her whether it's actors or directors. Her loyalty was intense. Second to that of her appetite to work. And perform as i say that and as i wrote in the episode did the research on her for this episode. I think i have subconsciously. Modeled myself after her. As i navigate this crazy business. I want to be like her. I want to do this just like her. Not in the headlines. Twenty four seven actually never really headlines but acquiring her successes quietly and being the best actor out there a real actors actor everyone who is a big name will always credit her if they worked with her for being the teacher and the inspiration and the most fun person ever met she had impeccable range. That no one could fight you on or try to discredit you on. She chose her projects based on their quality. Not based on their budget. Or who's in it were. What company is supporting it. She traveled all over the world to work and perform not staying between new york and los angeles. Only that you know can be cesspool that once you're sucked in it's hard to get out especially in this field. She often worked in canada in maine in. Louisiana anywhere with talent dared to emerge. She went to see it and participate. They don't make them like her anymore because of her. I know what i'm supposed to be doing and encourage you all to find somebody to look up to that Help you make that discovery. Be olympia or anyone else. You like though you're welcome to share. She'd love that. Many people feel like i do. She was a special broad with the no-holds-barred attitude zest defined the good stories. She never failed in that. Let's remember her that way. "Welcome back here. We finally are at the fourth segment. I thank you for listening all the way through. I really appreciate it. And i hope you've learned something about olympia and are inspired to watch your body of work. As she got older she was cast in some roles that centered around a common story line for older people death. Either that of her character or of someone close to her i think personally that's an under utilization of the talents and skills in older actress has they didn't live as long as they did and acquire the knowledge that they have just to use. It's talk about death. it's pretty one dimensional. There are other journeys older person can take. They aren't limited. Which is learning how to prepare for the other side. If you will go places do activities learn lessons rekindle or break off. Relationships cry laugh. Kiss whatever else they wanna do right here and now that unfortunately it was a lot of olympias role in the last decade or so. If she wasn't the old person dying than someone next to her was just like old people stumbling around abiding their time until final moment olympia though still managed to play and poke fun and briggs seriousness when necessary so that the film wasn't so linear that's the gift of a real actor a real pretender who is so perceptive to the nuances of any situation. You might not be aware of without her showing you. She could show me anything anytime. I'd have killed to work with her. I planned on it. I felt that our moment olympia and me with so destined that. I don't know i didn't move fast enough. I have a lot to learn. So that i don't make that mistake again in her twenty eighteen documentary which aired after the passing of her beloved. Louis he's asked if she's afraid of death as she swallowing some prescription medication keeping her alive. Ask her she's afraid of death however a comedy of errors. She says she was only concerned with not being able to feel. No species is conscious as us. Humans we are the only mammals maybe besides elephants with the knowledge and awareness of death of no longer talking walking breathing and to not know for sure if we continue in another form another place that's maddening to all of us for sure but to olympia. She was just concerned with not feeling. That's the main skill of an actor to feeling processing feelings reacting to feelings reacting one way or another like a chef needs his hands to cook or painter needs his brushes etc. An actor relies on his toolbox of emotions. True thespian. I'll say it a thespian. A rare breed. That's what made her academy award win for moonstruck so special someone who had dedicated herself to the arts in all forms trying it all someone who had been around a long time and just did.

Thirty one to a greek mother and turkish father in a heavy irish dominated neighborhood. Olympia describes learning to fight to toughen up and drive people away in an area where ethnic discrimination particularly against greeks was routine she developed her fiery spirit out of a need to survive and as a way to get out of the neighborhood she didn't want to be in. She was a voracious explorer. An overall doer never one to sit still and wait. This kind of putting yourself first flaunting. Your ideas publicly was not understood by her mother. A woman who very much represented the older ways of living and thinking. Olympia describes her mother taking on the job of keeping shame away from the family. Which more often than not took the form of me. Olympia was rebellious and independent. Her mother didn't like it. Olympia was prideful. To and the clash between them could only exists between two people with equal amounts of pride. Her mother wanted her to feel the shame. The shame for being loud overly animated not wanting to be in a one man relationship and worst of all which is funny enough for wearing pants. Her mother would hit her demanding. She feel shamed of her actions and how that made her family look to everyone. Her mother wanted some sign that she would get the message that she is not a proper girl. She wanted her to cry. The board is empty. But before mike can get on board the three bronze brothers show up his only option. Hide under the boat when the engine starts. He grabbed a dangling. Bow-line and hitches a ride. They're up to no good. The pressure is tremendous as he hangs on an fears of the blades of the prop behind them. But the boat finally slows then stops. And larry johnny jump in on scuba and have an extra set a gear. What's going on. Mike surfaces and sees their right off alcatraz. It's two against one. Nothing new for mike nelson. He follows them down to some rocks underwater where they deploy a surface buoy. Then we see a convict one zero nine eight six. That would be mark bronson. He died into the water now. Mike gets it as he sees the convict getting into a wet suit. And putting on the gear. Mike shoots a flare off to signal. The guards on alcatraz hoping it works. Mike is now fully rigged mask wetsuit. Tank regulator weight belt and knife and their high tailing it off against a strong title current. But larry turns and he spots mike. He's going to fight a rearguard action while johnny and markswoman. It's a knife fight. And it's a good one larry's tough clever and slippery but might get behind. Him cuts his air hose and brings him to the surface. And that's where we see. Mike's knife into larry's first stage. The flare did its job. And there's a patrol boat from the island coming on the scene that's one bronson in the bag on the boat. They followed the brothers bubbles and when they catch up mike dies back in lights off a flare and pokes it at the brothers and another massive underwater fight breaks out mike pulls off marks masks shuts air off and shoves him johnny he then puts johnny in a stranglehold and brings the two brothers to the surface. Mike has thwarted escape attempt. Larry says on the boat. It was a pretty good scheme. Yeah mike doesn't think so. Wow this first. Episode new year was jam packed with some great underwater fight scenes. I guess they really wanted to get everyone excited about the show again. And you most definitely will recognize johnny bronson. That was leonard. Nimoy yes mr spock. He shows up again. So that's the alcatraz story from nineteen fifty-nine the first episode of season. Two of seon. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll be back again soon with another installment of seon. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio.

The Unrelenting Force of Dawn Staley
"So josh. He recently had a long conversation with basketball. Legend dawn. staley. I for those who might be less familiar with her career and background. Can you give us a quick snapshot of just what this woman has accomplished. Well i don't know if i can do it quickly. It's a long list. She was a two time. Ncwa player of the year. At virginia she went on to be named one of the wnba. Top fifteen players of all time daily off screen getting that bit rates jabber every time. She comes down with a line drive. She has a board time olympia and as the player time overall including her coaching career. Staley underneath will sell it. Twenty three game winning streak for the united states. She went directly into head. Coaching style was never an assistant coach. Her first job was the head coach at temple and she came to south carolina following a fairly long career temple and has taken south carolina from okay program to a national championship in two thousand seventeen. South carolina spectacular. Performance chappie you dug pretty deep into you. Don staley's background her early background. Can you tell us about her early days and her family growing up well. She grew up one a big family lot five kids. The matriarch of the family was estelle salia housekeeper. They grew up in a housing project in north philadelphia. Not easy but still staley was a disciplinarian in her daughter's words and everybody knows my mother. She's a headstrong woman. She's deceased now but she was known for her straight took. No nonsense backed down from nobody. You did not take her parking spot at the mall without a fight etc and down has carried that onto a much larger stage so just a very tight family and still somebody who's very much shaped by her mother and be the course of north philadelphia where she played against boys for most of her childhood and became not just very good but very tough. The neighborhood i grew up in you had to make sure that you had a reputation as being strong then back now from anybody was able to handle anything that was throwing your way and that has prepared me for any curve balls. Life can throw me north philly. Tough was the word her brother used. And they don't throw that around lightly a connection between the way she was raised where she grew up and the kind of basketball coach that she's become a where she was raised in where she grew up has affected every part of her. She is not a person who on some days. It's easy to play for our imagine especially early in her tenure at south carolina there were players who left the program high profile players. Who left the program. I would think don stay. They would tell you. She may not be for everybody because she is not going to suffer any foolishness. She will defend those players outside the program to the end of the earth. But that doesn't mean that she's going to give them an inch when they're in her. Jim staley has also become one of the more outspoken coaches and all of college basketball and josh recently wrote that quote staley. Mary's attributes that many have decided are incompatible. What did you mean by that. Well she's just fascinating to me because she is a black woman in the state of south carolina who has been pretty clear that she's not donald trump supporter. This is a state that voted for donald trump. So she's really walking a fine line there when she's got a lot of fans in a red state and she's pretty blue person but she's also shares a very strong christian faith with most south carolinians. She has been outspoken about police. Brutality inequality in the policing system at the same time. She's a special deputy at the rich county sheriff's office. She regularly rides armed with rich. County sheriff's deputies on their patrols. I do think that's relatable the coaches like some of the things that they do the de-escalate or tactics they use is relatable to deal with every day. Leon lot longtime sheriff of richland county said to me. If she wasn't a basketball coach she'd be a cop. She's just got that demeanor. Help people i mean. And that's what law enforcement should be about is about helping people and she wants to know people. She has a gift to gab. She can talk. Do you have to have good communications. Feel today law enforcement officer. She has that so you can't put her in a box and that's fascinating to me. How do you think she navigates. Straddling all of those worlds. She said to me that she is not stressed. I can't be anybody but me but at the same time you know. Most people here at south carolina in south carolina. Accept me for who. I am and i'm good with that and i'm good the ones that don't but i don't think there's a grand plan. I don't think she has an outline. I think she takes every interaction every moment and she deals with it very reflexively face what you could teach me something you can over me up to see things a little bit differently then. She's not a person who will not listen to somebody who has a different opinion. She says she craves hearing those different opinions. As long as the conversations can be respectful and stay within certain bounds. She wants that to happen. I can foresee a day where dawn staley is sitting in the middle of colonial life. Arena in the court at a podium and just taking questions from tons of people in the audience. Who don't agree with her on anything politically or socially. I think she would love that. I think she wants that stuff. But i don't think this is part of a bigger plan. I think she just deal with it from her. Core and then goes to the next day. Does the same

Radio olympia is so great to have you here on the show. Thank you so much. I'm so excited to be here with you. Yeah i'm excited to have you here. You and i are past a crowd crossed in all different kinds of ways. And it's fun to get on a call like this and really get to know you more me too. I when i saw how you do your show with just having a natural conversation and talking story. I love that so i just can't wait to see where we go out. That's awesome pets totally awesome. Yeah i love story. And i want to just start with this last year. Has we're stepping into twenty twenty one. It's like i keep telling everybody. Take deep breaths now here. we go. we're going into twenty twenty one. And i see so much opportunity in front of us. I see so much ability for us to get out and do our most important work. I think the time is so ripe for so much of us and his worst stepping into the new year and like you to pause and reflect back on the last twelve months because it has been something i mean. He's thinking about it. We're almost a full year. We re we're really coming up on the one year mark when we started to think about things we're going to be different in twenty twenty. What was it that you learned about yourself in this past year. What are those biggest. Aha's one of the biggest aha's learned about myself is that i how the ability and the capacity now emotionally physically energetically mentally to handle huge stress loads. I grew up in an environment of A lot of stress a lot of violence and a lot of trauma from accidents and concussions. And things like that. So my nervous system had been for the most part of my life. Jerry activated an agitated and i didn't even know it i Though throughout the years. I've done a lot of work on myself and with other Very highly qualified professionals to help me. And so. I was so impressed that i could remain calm now. Not saying all the time. But i would have been in major freak out mode if i hadn't had that and while while one thing i did i wanted to share with you that i did at the beginning of the pandemic. I recognized it immediately. I did a thirty day. Facebook video files so one one video a day where i would teach people about what was happening. Is called money fears rail and how you change it and we went through. What's happening in your mind and in your body in your heart because of the pandemic and how is that affecting your life in your business and then we did real time change work so i offered that for free to everyone who wanted to hear that and it. It was really just kind of my way of giving back to people. I love that. And i think that was the businesses that moved through the Couple different angles. I wanna go off of that. The businesses that really thrive in this past year were showing up in service and really thinking. How can i share my guess. How can i own my genius and step into serving my community. And so as you were as you were you. Were going down this pathway of serving in your community. What happens with the people you were that that were in your community. They were able to not freak out able to be more calm and more center and be able to function because without when a person is in that fight flight freeze response. You know all they can think about but then also all their body can do is respond. The tension right that sabertooth tiger that ran so being able to not do that leaves us in a position to be able to go forward to make good decisions a professionally and personally and to be able to actually move forward because you cannot move forward when you're in a state of fear. Move forward in terms of advancing in accomplishing things. Yes you can make or as getting away from that tiger or that burning house that your your nervous system thinks you're running away from but you won't be productive you'll just be trying to get out of danger as opposed to going somewhere specific as in complex in your goals having impact serving others. Yeah i love it. I remember back to those days as well on. It's like that those first couple of days where you're of trying to catch your flooding and finding our our breath finding okay. What we do with this. Where do we go with this. And my initial instinct was related to my mastermind group. And say what you guys named. Where are you guys at. We actually opened up. Marco polo roma's first time. I opened up. Marco polo room to my clients but it was incredibly valuable because they started coming in and leaning into a one another one day somebody be up somebody down it. Would it would go throughout that week. And they would lean into each other and they found a different footing just like you're talking about and then they were able to go do their work which is the ripple effect of all of it. So just like you know as you were showing up for your clients helping them and all of that emotions. That are there then. They could go do their work after they found their footing. So that's super cool that that was what What you know what you did. I love that because it's it's so a line to a new aligned so super new way. I wanna go back to some of the story of you because i think it's when you realized that you had really grown over the years and and how you could manage to the stress and what was you know what came at addison twenty twenty. What was that you found for yourself that that really helped you ground and be in your best flooding at that early on. Well i did. It need to.
