We love the players. We look out for the players that were literally the only entity that is one hundred percent for the players. That wouldn't be right for you guys to go on the field and play tonight or whatever. It was very very professional. Very gentleman of you and you're standing next to me while delivering that speech and i remember go get this guy out of the head of the hall of fame and get him on our god damn offensive line. That's our time mr baker. You've done a hell of a job with the nfl hall of fame sir. Well thank you god. That was kind of my my worst day and my best day at the same time. And i've never really talked about this publicly but you know when we you know when we cancel that game it was frankly a painful decision but it was an easy decision to make because our first tenant here at the pro. Football team is to honor the heroes of the game and can't keep you safe. We're not honoring it. And i don't know if you recall but we had a whole lot of angry fields france fans. I'm sweating through my my suit out there. It's like one hundred degrees have been on media. And what the coolest thing was We were going to still have. Aaron rodgers was kind enough to talk to people Oliver locked talk to people. You guys lined up so that we can at least give the fan something. The fans booed me and they should have booed me. Because we weren't we weren't playing the game with the coolest thing happened in my career was i looked back and all the players who had lined up. I don't know if you remember what they were plotting. Decision that was yes. And i had a son played in the league for eight years with atlanta. He was not upon erica. Okay oprah atlanta sam baker and I finally got home that night at about two o'clock and i'm still sweating big and i put my phone down I'll always remember it kind of buzz. 'cause i got a text and my son had flown home. He just landed at the airport and found out what happened and He texted me says he is just landed. He says i got fifty texts from nfl players. Who respect the heck out of what you did. Yes and it is about you guys. It is about keeping everybody safe so I'd like to think that was both my worst best is in one day. Well i wanna let you know as a player. It was your best day because it was literally the. I didn't know that was your decision. By the way. I thought other people are potentially making that decision. Because i remember going out on the field and i think at that point aaron was already down the field there already groups of people having conversations around the field and everybody was like okay. Now who's going to make this decision. You know because there are still people that wanted to happen. Obviously it's a big deal but you stepping up for us. I think the players will never ever forget it. We're very thankful for it in the fans that booth in the moment hindsight look back and say. Hey let's talk about next week though and we've got a big week coming up. Where are you at right now. I know you're zoom calling the hall of fame but is everything. Is the hay in the barn already. And now we've got the class of twenty twenty one that will be enshrined on sunday night and this is going to be specialized truly believe past that. It's going to be one of the greatest gatherings in football ever. I've i've heard about some of the parties that are being prepared. I'm not sure if you get any heads up on those beforehandbut. Jim irsay actually said brother to do. Whatever they're asking me for. Deejays are asking me for this and jim mercy's for bateman edge. Do whatever the hell you want. Do you know about the festivities that are happening afterwards. After run that by you or is that all kind of private you do whatever you gotta do well. Those are private parties but we have the other stuff all coordination together Certainly will the can't close the sheriff's department the nfl security and the fbi back. But it's a good time. I mean it really is a cool event. I was felt that the best super bowls were at those small cities like indianapolis that was super cool super bowl because the game was almost bigger than the city. It merged together. That's what happens in canton. And we've got paul tagliabue's being enshrined as commissioner for a long time. So all the people that built the league or come into this. It's going to be a really special time. I'd love to have you here if you want to. You could stay at my house..

"We're gonna be watching the magic. Really closely moses moody also sort of in that mix and certainly james book night. Is there a guy that i think would probably be the top of their list. Orlando chances that are orlando trading. This pick though. I think they're considerable. That they may opt out for something else at eight that leaves the sacramento kings at nine. And you know the thing about the kings that i find so interesting is that they've been big franz wagner guys Really this entire draft process this very analytics driven front office and wagner just majors out really well analytically been this particular mock draft that we talked about we just had franz wagner going seven to the golden state warriors. So he's not there. So what a sacramento. Do i guess they could. You know maybe try to Make a deal to move up and give give the warriors something to return or they could take the guy. That actually is even a bigger analytic starling. Then franz wagner. That's alpern sin. Goon i out of turkey. Who kevin pelton. Who does the analytics work for. Espn just ranked as the top player in the draft from his analytics models. That he's had. I've talked to several other teams and folks that really dive heavily into analytics. They all love sin. Goon they all temperate with look. We understand that. He's a more traditional back to the basket. Low post player may be something that you're not as in vogue in the nba. Today where we think about big switchable athletic bigs that can stretch the floor. That's not sin goon but its production and turkey is so good at so high He's mvp of the turkish league that. I think that there's an argument that he's gonna turn into something. Maybe it's not nicoli yokich but maybe Vucevic for example i've maybe ido muscle bodice d'amato bonus sorry Maybe that's another guy that he could turn into an at nine. That's a pretty good. Get especially for sacramento. Who absolutely does need help on their frontline. They're aiming for the play offs and here's an eighteen year old that you're bringing in that actually has played high level basketball. I'm in turkey. He's going to be more ready than most of the college prospects that are that. Are there Trae murphy's another guy on that you could hear his name called in sacramento. So i think it's sort of wagner sin goon And then maybe trae murphy. At the next level at at nine at ted the memphis grizzlies. Who just recently made a trade with the new orleans. Pelicans the grizzlies got stephen adams. That deal got eric bledsoe. Also got the They also got the fortieth pick in the draft. The pelicans moved down to seventeen They get jonas spa in tunis. They also get the fifty for spin the draft and you know the question has been all along what is memphis doing. Who are they after Why did they move up into the top ten right now and i think the answer from all the sources that i can hear is that that is franz wagner. That they're after at ten the problem in at least in the mock draft. That i'm putting together is that he's off the board seven. He isn't available at ten. And now it puts them in the conundrum of okay. Who else do we want on the board. I was told that memphis is really looking for d wing. Someone who's athletic construct the floor and can defend and i can see why franz wagner would be interesting choice there. The other names that i'm hearing are more interesting. Moses moody fits some of that three part for sure the deep part probably certainly has linked but he lacks the elite athletes and elite size for the position. Josh giddy out of australia. Who doesn't really have three or d To his game but he is a big playmaker at an excellent ball. Handler and excellent passer. And i'm not exactly sure how he fits in memphis but hearing quite a bit that he's a guy that memphis could take and then finally is your williams out of stanford who probably fits the bill. More of what they're looking for is a little bit of a prospect. A little bit riskier. And maybe they're just not comfortable taking him at ten. The same way i certainly in my opinion would be and and i think that zaire might be a really great fit there. I but i m putting josh giddy here right now. Seems like there's the most smoke and that's kind of all it is right now. Most smoke around giddy. I'm right now at ten again. This is something. We'll be digging into undrafted in his. You subscribed in big board dot com if we update the mock draft. I'd throughout the day again. Maybe there's a trade or we get information. Hey it's your williams it's not. It's not josh. There's so much going on but before we jump there. I hope you're going to follow us. Live on draft night. Let's talk about this draft. Let's talk about my mock draft. It wasn't easy to put together You know this is one of those things where the phone calls are. Keep coming in. I just my phone just buzzed. Just a second ago right now with people and so. I wanted to take time out and say okay. Everything's a little bit quiet tonight. Here's what we're hearing from teams again. Things can change on thursday absolutely. But i wanna give you an idea of where we're at right now with the mock draft and that starts with the detroit pistons at one. We still have cade cunningham. Berry was number one hundred big board all year. He's been number one in every mock draft that we've done. I know there's some folks on the internet. Saint chad doesn't like kid cunningham. He's not number one. No he's number one on our big board number one on her mock draft. He was even number one my personal mock draft. I do think he is the number one. Pick in this draft. I do expect the detroit pistons to select him at number one. Now a couple of caveats there. They do like jalen green. He had a great workout there. There is some internal discussions within their front office about jalen green at number one two. They have talked to teams about trading down one two spots in the. I really haven't heard anything of trading out even further than that right now so there's the possibility that detroit could trade. However i think both of those things drafting jalen green or trading out of the number one pick are highly unlikely. I think that we're feeling right now. Like the most likely scenario is that We are going to be seeing the detroit pistons drafting cape cunningham at number one. I think i think pistons fans are going to be pretty stoked. I hear that at number two. I think the droughts is probably gonna go according to form. We're hearing jalen green. I going to the houston rockets. I think is gonna likely be jalen green going a number. To the rockets there have been some internal discussions about evan. Mobely there too but it seems like that is where the rockets are heavily leaning at this point and they are going to draft the most dynamic score in this draft a guy that can really drop. I think twenty five points night in the nba. He's probably gonna have some forty point games even as a rookie. He's just that dynamic of score. He's an incredible athlete. I'm really stoked about jalen. Greens future. he's a tier one prospect for me which means that. I believe that he can be a superstar. So i'm really excited about greece future and i think he's a really good fit in houston as well. I always felt like jalen. Greens best fit was in detroit. But i understand why the pistons would select kate cunningham number one. I think it's the safest choice i think. It's the least controversial. I think it's going to be awesome right away near one. I also think jalen green's pretty awesome and you're one to at least offense. I do think there's questions about his defense. Do there's questions about his passing ability getting other people involved in the game. all of that is legitimate. If you wanna take a few swipes at jalen green but to me. He is going to be electric. And i think he's going to be the guy that you see over and over again as someone who's really odd sportscenter night in night out got exci- it factor going to be the guy that's going to be marketed. I can understand why the rockets are high on him at two at three. That leaves the cleveland cavaliers. I think it will be evan mobely. Usc seven foot. Big man unicorn that can do just about everything he can handle the ball. He can shoot the basketball. He can block shots he can rebound. He can score in the post these skinny but he is an excellent athlete. He's really fluid. He's really guide to me. That i think is just so fascinating in what he can do and what ultimately he could be in the nba. I know i've got knocked by some people quoting a scout. That said he sort of chris bosh on offense and then anthony davis on defense. And i get it. I get that if you put those two together. You've got like one of the greatest players of all time. And i don't think that's exactly what the scout man. I just think it meant that. When when we think about chris bosh you think about offensive player. Who is solid defensively. But not great. Where mobley's defensive abilities remind him. A little bit of davis. I'm not saying that. The combination of those two is going to make him a greater player than at davis. For example who i think is one of the best players in the nba. I will say this about evan mobely if he gets it if all of those skills continue to get refined if he continues to improve as a shooter if he's able to continue to improve the ball handler passer and he continues to get stronger. I'm so that he can guard players in the post. He's got a shot at being a top five player in the nba..
Inside the Downfall of the XFL
"XFL was supposed to be the league that can finally make spring football work with financial backing from WWe's Vince McMahon in veteran leadership from commissioner Oliver Luck. The idea seemed promising. But just five weeks in Copen, nineteen forced the xfl hit pause, and then unlike other leaks. It announced it was shutting down for good. Today the inside story of why the xfl closed doors, and whether it could have been saved. I'M UNICOM'S IT's Tuesday June sixteenth. This is espn daily presented by marathon. Shaken. What's Shakin what she can not much some to you're talking to you Kevin Siefert writes about the NFL and the xfl for ESPN. So Kevin the last time you and I talked was to preview the xfl so excited about this new league time the rules and how funding would be, and whether it would work, and while sadly, we are gathered here today to autopsy the xfl the. League officially suspended their operations on April tenth season quote the uncertainty of the current environment, obviously referencing the corona virus pandemic. What was it like inside the League on that day? It was pretty wild. Actually talked to Kurt unsecure. WHO's the president of the Saint? Louis? Battle. Hawks and he heard some rumors he had wondered if the League would. Need to cut back in some way like many businesses, but he at most thought there might be some layoffs or potentially some furloughs, but when he woke up that morning. Like many other xfl employees he saw the. Direct deposit from. His pay. Was much larger than normal. Anyone who's ever worked in an office setting or a for a company of any kind knows that on your last day you get a paycheck for your salary, and also for any occasion time accumulated, and that's what that's. What happened here and that was really the first sign that he occurred hunziker or anybody. Really who worked for the xfl knew that not only were some changes about to happen, but. Some really ominous events were about the Kerr that day. And they found out. There was a going to be an all company conference. Call at about noon. And that's where they were informed that everyone who works for the League was terminated. Kevin Win all that down. The XFL was on hold like pretty much everything else right I mean the pandemic hit a sports world back in March when the NBA system. It's season. WWe Closes headquarters in Stamford Connecticut days later then on March. Twentieth six fell big flat out of their season, and said we look forward to playing full seasons for you, and with you in twenty twenty one, so it seemed like at the time the plan wasn't afford the league entirely, but just hit pause. Pick up when the pandemic was over. Why do you think they thought they could keep going back then? I think they they felt pretty good that in the five weeks at the season had managed to get through they had. Gone a long way. Towards proving the concept they had pulled in about twenty million league revenues, and they're projecting forty six million through the rest of the year. They're TV. Ratings had dipped, but they were about to go on a run of having most of their games, either on ABC or Fox and so, that would probably at least stabilized the ratings, and they thought that they would have for the first time since they had started building the league time to really sit down, pull apart their thoughts and come up with a better product, the following year Vince McMahon who the owner of the League he had pulled almost four hundred million dollars out of WWe stocks into his personal account to finance. Really for two or three years, and so they knew the money was there, he had put up about two hundred million, and was committed to paying another hundred and fifty million a year for a few years. Until they could potentially get the profitability, so there was. A lot of confidence that the money existed to continue subsidizing the League in that long term plan would not be sacrificed just because the season had to end more abruptly than they had hoped. I didn't know that so the xfl Vince McMahon rather was using wwe money to fund the XFL. Right away you know Vincent Man's the owner of w w well early state, the founder and the CEO, and so he had lots of stock, and so he used that stock eventually to fund the XFL. There was a division, a financial and business division, but you know there was also a shared services agreement between the two. Certainly the way they were able to recruit coaches and front office people and even the Commissioner Oliver luck the way they were able to convince people to come aboard was the show them the plan the financial plan that he had to spend money over the over those three years, there was public documents. That showed that the stock had been sold in that the money was now. In Vincent. Man's hands to fund the XFL and that's why they they felt so good about it. So the xfl like every other sport announces. Hey, we're going on pause. Then a couple of weeks pass. What was the state of play at the beginning of April? Really at the beginning of April the XFL was in off season mode. Oliver Lock. WHO's the commissioner had been asked to come up with twenty, twenty, one I jets. He had asked all the department has all the team presidents to come up with plans to market the teams throughout the long off season. That was to come. Everything was in the XFL. Offices were being directed towards this twenty twenty one season and a lot of times towards the twenty twenty two seasons well, they were looking ahead, saying okay, here's what we want to do in twenty twenty one. We WanNa make it better, and this is what we want and twenty twenty two, and then then we look to see if we can be profitable and this was all going on really. Really, in between the time, the xfl canceled season, and when it shuttered and had bankruptcy, and so those plans were all compiled, and I'll reluctant demand to Vince McMahon, and then they didn't hear anything. They didn't hear anything back, and they thought maybe it was because Wrestlemainia was going on. People had their attention there, but that was something that caused a little bit of unease as the second week of April arrived and that. They've been asked to create these budgets. And then there have been radio silence. So Oliver Overlook. Who was commissioner of the XFL also Andrew looks father for those who don't know and has been a sports executive for years used to NFL Europe who's an executive with the NCWA? He's going about his business. Assuming the league's going to come back putting together some plans, and then what happens. And then he gets a call or actually gets a letter on April ninth stating that he had been fired for cause and the letter came from. Vincent man and from the his attorney listing supposed. Infractions to his contract into his duties that Oliver Luck had apparently committed in his response, Oliver Luck in his legal papers, said he had never been told of any of these issues, but on April Ninth I, think about five o'clock is when Oliver Luck found out, he'd been fired. So what elect do? You know he is already in his home. In Indianapolis, the xfl offices were closed, and so he immediately got with his lawyer. Because when you get fired, because usually that can mean that the guarantee in your contract is no longer valid, and so he has sued for wrongful termination, not only disputing the reasons that Vince McMahon fired him which among other reasons, whereas the use of company cell phone for personal reasons which. Many people in the xfl on in the public to be an awfully little bit of a petty, and that's not even editorializing. It's just a fact. You know petty reason to fire sports commissioner WHO's making. Between five and seven million dollars a year, and so he not only is disputing the facts of what was in the latter, his termination letter, but also that the xfl never gave him the thirty days. That's required in his contract to correct any issues that ownership is having, and so that is currently playing out in court. We'll see who wins on that or whether there is some kind of negotiation that occurs, but at the moment Oliver Luck seeking twenty three point eight million dollars from Vince McMahon, who can fill the contract that he signed in two thousand, eighteen to be the commissioner of the xfl.
In filing, McMahon claims Luck fired 'for cause'
