"Strange the unexpected as the lid and wash asleep inside the box oddities so here. We are our first episode from our new apartment. This is all very exciting. And very new. We've now slept three nights here. Yes yeah and i have to say. We made sandwiches yesterday. And it's starting to feel like home. Whenever you make a sandwich it always helps establish a feeling of i'm home. I have a sandwich. How much more homey can that be right. I know this is where my jalapeno mustard goes. This is home. It just makes sense and the people here have been great. The maintenance guy. James james has been just amazing although he has a hard time remembering my name we talked to him at great length the other day and then i run into him in the elevator and i said hey you know it's jeff throw he goes. Are you moving into moving out. And i'm like no. We moved in a apartment for fifteen. And he's like oh age difference. So apparently that's what we're becoming known as here in this apartment complexes the a couple well. It's better than like smells weird couple. That's true so far we haven't encountered them. But it's only a matter of time and to commemorate our very first episode. not in maine. I thought i would do a main based storage attribute attribute if you will very nice to our former home you've heard us mentioned a number of times on the podcast that up until recently we lived in bangor maine for many many many many years. And we've had a few encounters with stephen king. Your dad actually picked him up hitchhiking dead. This is the kind of guy. Stephen king is. He just hitchhiked at least the guy that he was twenty years ago. Sure maybe even then he was pretty well to do. I ran into him at the bank and had a really nice conversation with him. Although you know running into stephen king at bank odds of that are pretty high. But he owns a couple of radio stations in bangor and you and i both have many friends who have either worked directly for him or worked for his company and for a lot of years. I think he's on the radio stations for thirty years. Something like that. And i have a lot of friends that have stories about stephen king and some of them are really pretty interesting. For example. one of my former co workers lived in the augusta area. Augusta maine the state's capital but he worked in bangor and he was telling stephen king that In his hometown in augusta there was a kentucky fried chicken a small. kfc location kitchen. Fresh whatever they call it these days it was right next to a funeral and when things got really busy at the kfc they would borrow chairs from the funeral home l. They would actually see people in funeral home. Chairs at the kfc and steven king told guy. That's where i get my ideas stuff like that haunted chairs at a kfc. It's what i thought. That was kind of an interesting insight to stephen king's writing process. And did you know that his novel christine was written that way about a see. Not about a kfc. It was based on a true story. What in maine now. Back in nineteen eighty three. Stephen king wrote the horror novel christine. It was released as a film directed by john carr carpenter in that. Same year It's hard to believe it's coming up on the fortieth anniversary of christine. But i didn't realize this he based the story on real events took place in the state of maine. I don't understand how that's possible isn't christie in the one about the haunted car so these are true events. That happened in maine that well. At least they're presented as true. Okay please continue specifically the old orchard beach area. They talk about this a lot. It borders on urban legend. But a lot of the story can be backed up with cold hard facts. It's a story of a haunted car. A nineteen sixty four dodge. Golden eagle many said. This car is possessed by demonic forces or was and there's a history that might bear. That out story goes like this. The golden eagle was a nineteen sixty four dodge three thirty limited edition it was purchased in late. Nineteen sixty three by the old orchard. Beach police force and it served as a police cruiser for several years and it was driven over the years by three different police officers oil more than that but three specific police officers most of the time the first officer that drove the golden eagle according to the stories. They're still circulating. In old orchard beach. He began to show signs of a personality change. His coworkers claimed that you know he was usually a pretty cheerful guy. Pleasant disposition he began to sour. He started keeping to himself more and more and he always seemed agitated and confused and this happened after he started driving the car. Yes one night. After a long shift he went home and killed his whole family and then turned the gun on himself. It sounds like mold over the next couple of years. The car was driven by a couple of different police officers and pretty soon people started to notice changes in their personalities unbelievably. It's claimed that a second officer shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself to murder suicides. Two guys both driving this particular car and then a third officer was also involved in a murder suicide so after this nasty turn of events. The old orchard police department the cops they refuse to drive the car. I don't blame them and so. The car sat in a parking lot for several months. I'm used and haunt the parking lot. No i think it was just abandoned out there. No one would drive at nothing. Bad happened while it was not being driven but since it wasn't being driven the old orchard beach police department decided to sell the car at auction and it was sold to the allen family and it remains in the allen family to this day on over the years it was driven by various members of the allen family and it didn't really seem to hurt them. It was fairly peaceful with them except occasionally when they were.

"And they can't do that either, right? Yeah. Yeah. Which is you know, that's its own little you know, issue there. I think what we think about You know the ownership of the building and what they can get for it. And you know, not wanting to just head over to anybody And if they if they find a new big office tenant for the future there You know, there could be a new name for that at some point, but you know, who knows? I mean, I know the names of these buildings. You know, once you've named them once or twice or even three times it Z values name because you're right. It does. Um, Okay, So what do you put in The water tower place small if it's shudders. I mean, if you're not going information, I don't think you're gonna go up to the third or fourth level for another shop. What? What's the future there? It Z Good question. I think if you I had the answer that question. I I know that the folks at Brookfield Property Partners, which owned the building, would would would like to hear it because this is one of the mean Brookfield. There are a lot of big balls around here, but they own you know, Okra Oprah Center in North Records, and, um, you know they have no shortage of ideas, is the second largest mall owner in the country. Right? You know, what do you do with big, empty spaces in malls? I mean, we've seen this this trend toward experiential retail. Yeah, they something that I mean, look, the Lord and Taylor store. Former Lord and Taylor store at Old Orchard was kind of interesting example. They turned it into a virtual reality Gaming center where you you know where headsets and backpacks and it's like you have this big, empty space. And, you know, I mean, I don't know whether that's the future for a lot of big spaces, but You know, you think about some of these faces maybe being turned into you know, distribution centers, You know, just for stuff that people order online. I mean, there are there are uses for space. It's just It's gonna take a while for that to shake out. I mean, I'm in Northbrook Court guy, Danny, and you know, Marshall Fields is not only closed. It's been nice and Marshall Field's Yes, Yeah, it's Macy's has not only been closed up there, it's been toward down right now. On the other side, Lord and Taylor is closing if it's not already closed. S O. There's their struggle. They're gonna try to make that into like a gland, aren't they? That's the last I heard. Yeah, you know, And it's their open space, outdoor space apartments of part of that, You know, restaurants. I mean stuff that The point of this is what do you What can you put into him also that people have to be there in person, you know, because you don't have to be somewhere to shop anymore. So what do you have to do to get people there? I mean, you see some of these areas. Like North Korea court, where some of the most popular storefronts in the mall or, you know, kids, sports activities, you know, people show and then you know. Hey, that brings people in and then hey, maybe they'll shop and they'll stop at the Apple store and they'll stop and grab something to eat, and that that's kind of the new Generation of malls and you know, but water Tower place is tricky because you know you don't have. It's not necessarily kid friendly when you think about the clientele around there. So what's the I don't know. I mean, it's It's a very interesting Future for water tower place and some of the big retail spots on Michigan Avenue and you know, it's just coming out of Cove it It's just gonna be a It's this giant reset this. This just accelerated what was happening in retail overall and You know now what comes of it? I mean, that zbig question. Never thought when I moved to the city that I'd see a clearance sale at Macy's or Marshall Fields or call it what you want on the magnificent mile, but that's what's coming. Danny Ecker writes about it at Crane. Chicago. Business Chicago business dot com. Great to talk to Danny, you Tuesday. Take care. You're listening to Chicago's afternoon news here on 7 20, WGN. So if you're in the house maybe the gets kind of lower battery forty percent longer and these new ones if you put them upside down they power down after three seconds that's handy. I've made the mistake of putting them down when a podcast was playing and they just keep playing indefinitely. Well they're sitting there by the bedside I heard an interesting comment from dave slush of the evil. Genius chronicles podcast. Who has been trying. The echo frames easib these a fan of them but he said he actually just uses them as bluetooth speakers that he's not actually Summoning alexa lot. When he's wearing them and i agree. I like wearing them if i walked to the beach. And i'm gonna be alone. I listened to a podcast or the beach. Boys i might ask. What's the weather going to be once. Low tide but the alexa aspect of. It isn't really the way i'm using. I'm just using it because it's very handy to here without having something in my ears like airpods and i did decide not to ride my bike with them because when i was writing like oh i can hear through my years. That's how i get into an accident at old orchard beach. That wasn't badly hurt. So i'm not using them riding bikes. I use them walking around. I think that there. There's some problems with it. Because it's it can be distancing just today. We were walking to the beach sterling. And i and and i was listening to a podcast. Maybe the beach boys. And they can't tell if i'm listening to something or if i'm just ignoring them and that that's a bad kind of confusion to have so you know if they're lean now understanding enough that if she asked me something. I tap once on the side of the right side of the glasses that means turning them off and i can hear them But you know you have to use a device like this in a way that doesn't get in the middle of your human relationships that said i like a lot and i think that this upgraded version of them will be interesting. There was one other day. One product was announced at the same time the day one was sort of. You know these are beta invitation. Only they're trying him out and it was a ring that you could talk to. I was able to try it at a demo. Called eco loop well. Apparently that one didn't get much traction and they're discontinuing it. If you were lucky enough invitation you bought one. They say it'll still work and they'll continue to support it and update it so there's a few going to be a small group of people with alexa rings that no one else can get. That's kind of cool to think about. But one of the products made it and one of them didn't and if the frames really take off then the the over all day one initiative will certainly.

Very cool stuff the proximity principle, the proven strategy that will lead to the career. You love can when I've done book tours in the past. Sometimes it's interesting to me when I land in some of these media hits that as soon as the lights go off in the camera goes off, they start asking me questions about what's in the book has that been happening? Like on a personal level. You know? Oh, yeah. How'd you figure this out was the question? I got this morning from one of the host good day. Chicago is able to share with her. Figured out intention to get around people that were in radio and television and get in places where I could learn the craft of broadcasting that was the early days of just getting in those places. So that I could learn what I needed to learn and get a shot and opportunity to do what I would need to do to make up the ladder. And as you know, Davis became a thought that I shared on the radio show, the Ken Coleman show a year ago and it began to take hold with the listeners. And so we knew that we had something here. And this is the beginning of it. And so, yeah, we get those questions, you know. And it's always fun to share. What you and I are so proud of with anything. We do have our personalities Ranji solutions when we put content out. It's based on the fact that it is a proven planning actually works, and it's repeatable. So yeah, we're having a lot of fun talking about the book. Yeah. The proximity principle number one in job interviewing number one bestseller and job interviewing only Amazon right now. So at this moment as we speak, so very. Cool. Hey, ken. Can I have the book I said, well, sure, she goes, I want to give it to my high school, son. So that's always good to hear. Yeah. Perfect. Perfect for a college graduate for sure because they're coming out. And how do you take this degree and land work in what you studied for, you know, and what's your what's your dream? Is my dream is to be an X, Y or z. So how do I get to do that? While you have to get him proximity to the people and the places where X Y or z is occurring. Right. That's absolutely the case. When you can begin to identify who those people aren't as, you know, in the book, the proximity principle, we identify five people that you need to be looking for and getting around and also five specific places that if you put yourself in whatever that X Y Z careers that you're talking about all of a sudden, I get the opportunity to work need to learn to do I want to do and continue to connect. And that's the secret of the proximity principle. It is the principle that will guide you to doing what you love, but then continue to advance into progress. You that's what we all long long for progress. And this is a principle that have practiced a bitch. Really? He's going to lead you to so many opportunities for you to show up very cool. Good stuff. So the first book signing is tonight and Chicago, Skokie old orchard Barnes and noble.
