"Before we begin i'm excited to share that you'll be hearing to new voices on the slowdown starting next week. Poets tina gina chang and brenda shaughnessy will be stepping in for me for a few weeks sharing their favorite poems and unique perspectives. I'm excited to hear what they choose and i'll be back with you soon. <music> i'm tracy k smith and this is the slowdown <music> my my family moved to northern california in nineteen seventy five and that's the california that i love it was quiet. There were hills and fields orchards along the roadsides places where you could come upon horses that would saunter up and winning it you across a low fence. It's from our suburban neighborhood. The sounds of nearby interstate eighty were like a gentle ongoing whisper. There's always been wealth in california but back then wealth was land at the end of my dad's life the woman he he lived with us to tell stories of growing up on a dairy farm in downtown san francisco in a neighborhood once known as cow hollow now the wealth of the state is unmistakable and ostentation underwritten by tech industry billions south of san francisco. Go you can see neighborhoods where all the old houses have been bought razed and replaced with new mansions. It sometimes seems seems to my is at least that whole towns have been rebuilt almost from scratch when i visit the state what i see more than anything anything else is change and what i feel is nostalgia for the california of my childhood a bright dusty place that smells els when the wind is right like dried apricots when i read today's poem freeway to eighty by lorna disadvantages. I feel like i'm being spoken to by someone with a memory a lot like my own not only has she driven the very roads i once knew but like me the poem speaker once dreamt of escaping her hometown and winning access to all the world's bright seeming and faraway places places like the girl i once was the poem speaker also seems to know what it feels like to live looking over some kind and of social divide longing for admittance into places or circles not intended for people like her. Maybe what i long for. Most when i'm back in the state that was once my home is access to a version of myself that no longer exists. Maybe the real pang of witnessing such radical change is the feeling that my young self whatever has become of her would be long even less in this new california than she did. In the old freeway to eighty by lorna dee servant this las casas near the gray cannery nestled amid wild abrazos of climbing roses and man high red geraniums uh-huh are gone now. The freeway conceals it all beneath a raised scar but under the fake wind sounds of the open lanes in the abandoned lots below new grasses sprout wild mustard remembers old gardens. Come back stronger than they were. Her trees have been left standing in their yards. I'll body cook ghettos sarasota's nogales the heat does come here here with paper bags together greens espionage there the llagas yet above when i scramble over the wire fence that would have kept me <music> out once i wanted out wanted the rigid lanes to take me to a place without sun without the smell of tomatoes burning on swing shift in the greasy summer air. Maybe it's here in los gambles extraneous their stasi that we're l. Find it that part of me moan under like a corpse or a loose seed <music>. I will tell into some of that happening. This conversation all right Tyson thirty threes. Where's set SACR- I mean San Luis Lake City City. Yeah sorry go ahead. You're just you're just here. S I met you. You're awesome. What at night show? Did you tell us what you open the show which shows you. Why guys invest late night? Saturday show okay. Yeah eight o'clock you went to eight o'clock show on Saturday early show late night. Sorry sorry yeah earlier want okay earlier WanNa ten I feel like I feel like information formation. It's difficult to come by these days and I don't I don't think it's me. People don't answer questions correctly they don't listen. It starts with the first part. I got smart smart people so funny just just spent the whole afternoon with a bunch of smart guys and it's smart guys. Don't let you get away with stuff. like Nixon Tours Smart Smart Guy and he said and he's a lawyer for Laurie and he said he said the twenty four hour war. That's on Netflix. I said Yeah. Did they make you whole that. They did they pay you enough to pay for the yeah for it. And I said Well they paid us a little bit but we'd sold it initially to. I don't know Amazon Amazon. And they they had made us whole and then we sold it to Netflix. And they paid US memorial. They pay us a little more but and and then he. He policy went so so so to answer the question. Netflix did not make you whole on it and I was like. Yeah I mean I did answer the question sure. He wanted an answer from Netflix. Or whatever whatever I just realized smart people are precise. Oh Yeah and they want answers and I'm fine with that and then many other people have. How many times have you heard difficulty when I go? Is there alcoholism your family they do. Well the GRANDPA was correct and his son all the all the brothers. They're all out but their recovery. Now take no that was my question. Alcohol's family Chechen. So you went to the eight o'clock show which would have been the seven thirty show The early show on Saturday. Kurt thank you and I'm glad he had had a good time and I came out said Heidi you afterward and said Hi. I just did like the meet and greet okay well good. I'm glad you had a good time. Thanks I have a question yes just something. I've always wanted to ask you guys. Just since I've been listening to you for so long but I just been smoking pot since I've been sixteen consistently like I started all fourteen but it sounds like every day since sixteen years old I used to just get a lot of trouble finding arguing with my mom and everything and I found that that helped. So that's Kinda short. I guess summary As to why and I tried to get off of it to at sixteen like Taking zoloft and he's still kind of weird at the time I hated it. Let's just get that will not help with pot it Withdrawal go ahead okay. Yeah so And that was when I was sixteen when they're trying to help me with those anger and issues and get themselves school and then went off on pot. Made Me Nicer. People told me and I've just used it every day and I'm it is one of the things you've always said about pot right. Were you always always going to run into a guy on stone her then the guy hopped up on Budweiser wiser right in the alley. So right okay. So now you'd like to get off. I'm not every day I wake up. I do it and you talk about that. That I'm just Kinda like that's the weird thing about people smoke pot. They can do it while they're at work you know and it's just sort of something that thing so you WanNa stop so you have view. How have you reached out for help with this? No that's where AMAC honest with you. I mean I know not gonNA. Aa Meeting or something or or whatever career battle no better right yeah. Yeah marijuana anonymously. The reason that's so helpful is because everyone you talk to. We'll go. There was a dick. Do I smoke. Aw and yeah for most people. It isn't but for some people it's really bad really rough and opiates aren't addictive for everybody. Either but for some people are people people still hanging onto this physically addicted thing. I I always always sounded like bullshit to me. Things are either addictive. Well Yeah but remember people still hang onto this dictator. It's like okay but you can't quit so therefore therefore I know it's a brain problem therefore it is physical and we know exactly where it's happening in the brain and everything about what's the difference if you can't quit quit and you can't quit. What what is what is it just so happens that we know when people can't stop doing something we know a good deal about that biology? It's a very specific thing But whether whatever your cause of not being able to stop we can help so the great thing about Ma's you'll find everybody. There has your story which is very reassuring and they can share with you. How they're able to stop and WHO's helped them than the withdrawal can be really tough? For some people it can the sleeplessness is the main thing and that sleeplessness can go for six months the first two weeks can be a lot of paranoia irritability a lot and there are treatments for him. But you need to be with physician that really knows how to treat it or you're just go through it with a lot of support from people in the program and the good thing about the program. Is there available. Twenty four seven. You know and you need a lot of support to get through this. It's really tough for some people. How how long have you made it? So far I've never gone past five days. Yeah Thousand Sixteen. I'm thirty three. It gets rough against there are treatments. I can't sleep. I get super irritable people around me. Hate me up on a Sun. Now that's what's gotten into alcohol smoke you'll feel a lot better when you get off it you do. We see people really improve their moods improve their their everything gets better by. It's hard so yeah. Go to your NA or any of the twelfth step program. Where people? But Emma is particularly empowering. Because you'll be in a room with twelve Tyson's I mean they'll all go. Yeah Yeah exactly. And here's how I dealt with. Here's WHO's helped me and you can get resources locally there. You're in salt. Lake City cirque lodge is right down the street. There's cirque lodge is a great treatment programs a lot of recovering people in that area and you might WanNa just look on the website for Cirque Lodge. Salt Lake. City's beautiful some weird rules about alcohol play. Eat off the street there did. Yeah they're just loosen them up a little I know. They went from four to five for the beer limited time a year. It's weird everything. So everything's a ritual. Just a weird thing I it seems it all seemed it'll be steph. We make fun of. It'll go down historically like two drinking fountains or something. I could just be stuff. History won't be kind to well the the history of the original settlers big group of Alcoholics area and the the lore that I've I've heard is that it was the wives that said. Hey your new religion great. But you'd better put this in there. We're not going to sign up because you got to stop this. I know and I-IT's I treat lots of Lots of descendants of the original put relation. Well you know the ad genetic burden you know it's pretty Interesting is what I noticed noticed a and I. I'm not surprised by this but we would. I always find is half the populace or Mormon and the other half have aggressive tattoos nutty. They're they're they're they're letting their freak flag fly weird. That's what that kind of stuff creates porsches people one way or the other. I just look at the Party that the kidnapper of Elizabeth Smart took her to when they pulled her out of the woods and took her to a party. It was a bunch of maniacs. None of them are paying attention to the girl in the white robes. That you know wouldn't speak I. I gotTa tell you one of one of one one of the great one of the great states that have always been in as never feeling burden to prove something one direction or another direction. You know like I'm being watched by this religious and I'm going to now get an a stud in my tongue so I can show people that I'm not involved with like our this weird sort of or the Hang Seng. Now think about it in the seventies we were growing up. There was a lot of that. You're not the boss of me man. Dan A lot of anti but it was not written on your body right in any way we run we must have been affected by that because there was a lot of that. Oh I I remember you. You know thinking about the man and yeah wanting to push back the man but it you ray were filling yourselves up at the Jacuzzi at the at the at the club for the fat cats. I really look. That is pushing against the man. I but in retrospect broke into the Mall Hong Club because we didn't have a Jacuzzi. No one I knew owned Jacuzzi. But you didn't stop there while we're anima we need read entertainment you gotTa entertain. I'm a showman we're show. Okay all right. Let me tell you about something I coulda used back then. Yeah we're supposed to talk about Default settings and having giving back and that kind of thing and I got Adams was here on your show. I discuss this with him very briefly passing and I don't know why I felt compelled to discuss it with them. But I was saying to him you you know. I've got this very strange strange. I've got this distinct impulse that you have all this life experience I've seen everything clinically and and I don't particularly want to run a program again. I don't want all the responsibility but I want to give this back in somewhere when a use it. It's kind of why I'm doing lots of shows with with You know callers in questions and things I just wanted to like. Just give it out and that feels good. Yeah and this idea goes all the way people have maybe heard me talk about but this before but it goes all the way back to aristotle. He was he wrote a lot of in his nick mckeown ethics. He wrote a lot about you. Know what's the purpose of human in life. What isn't he decided that the purpose was something he called you diammonium and of course you know English speaking Sort of translators translated that as happiness happiness but in more recent years. They've reconsidered that as probably not the right idea and that happiness is far too narrow an idea here in this country in a pursuit of happiness. That's all we're about right. We don't even we're talking about like well. We're we're pursuing is misery as high read it. Yeah now I mean every article in the Los Angeles Times of the New York Times. You know women aren't having children because of the Eminent danger sure of of climate change and Baba. It's just like it's nothing but it's a pursuit of misery. Look everybody you can read a person or a country any direction you want to read it. You WanNa read. This country is great and wonderful you can read is great and wonderful. Read it as oppressive and racist and climate change the way you can read it that way. You have a choice every day. What would I would suggest gest is read? It is wonderful and simultaneously recycle. That's that's kind of my thing. It's like you galaxy of psychology. You could be happy and it's good for the environment and again happy. You know we think of it as Kinda Yahoo or some sort of freedom or something but the reality is it's probably something more inherit. Aristotle was talking about which is flourishing and leading a good life. It's more nourishing believing right existence. Yeah and and he identified being of service to other people and you know for instance. I mean Jesus Christ was he happy. The way we think of happy eighty or did he lead a good life. You lead a good life right and and not all of it was happy in the sense of of Heat Donna happiness. We weren't doing but but that this is the part that people miss so people are going to help the homeless soup kitchen. I'm about but aristotle's very clear about this. I think this is the piece that we all miss here. We okay we missed the benefits of giving back on a regular basis being of service and we completely miss what's necessary to be able to really make a difference for people and Aristotle spelled. The Saudi said they need from nieces which is translated as wisdom and technique which is a skill if you have a skill and some experience experience will now you can really give something back to people. So that's what I've been experiencing a lot lately. Yeah feeling back in just a choking on my spent you know I. It's it's interesting because I've always it's funny. I said I said the Nixon Torah the other day. He was sitting around and he was talking about researching researching this and researching that working on basically California exit strategy and Nick Is. Nick is an insanely thorough man. Very meticulous and that's what makes them a really good writer and just sitting around talking and he said you know this state state or that state check the you know no income tax and Blah Blah Blah. And there's kind of getting into it and certain point you know. He said I think he said you know. Adam you make more money than me. You should be bub-bubba and I said you know nick whatever you decide. That's what all day because you're very thorough. You very smart and you research everything very well and if you have have spent months researching subject and draw conclusion which is this is the best state to live in for you. Then I shall do that. Do you know we're heading list shortlist. Now I can't even remember what it was gonna see Texas Arizona Nevada. Now a New Hampshire type place or something either way. The point is this the point is I listen to people who are smart and I don't listen to people that are dumb. People have no idea who listen to and who not to listen to two I have I have had it happen a bunch of times where it's like a meaning if people some people people rub people the wrong way you know. They'll say like like like I've had people go like Mike August. You know fuck that guy. What's he no? He has a masters in business and he was an attorney. And he worked for William Morris for fifteen years so he knows something. He doesn't have to tell you what the effort dinner tonight. But if he's talking about business you you might WanNa Might Wanna listen to what he has to say you. May You may know something. I may know something know something. I don't I don't don't get why for some people. It's a well that they can never stop drinking from for others. It's like they a poison. It they shed in it and they walk away from it will experts. Are you know. Experts or advisors are sort of Sort of looked at as meaningless because as well. They're basing their ideas on things that were probably research white man from the past all white man who cares what they think. Nothing's valid comes out of their about. I I look you know. It's funny because my instinct is that aristotle. which is I try to share my opinion even with everybody all the time and most most oftentimes this is taken as why? Are you trying to tell me what to do. It's just a weird. It's an interesting concept. It's usually done by people that aren't getting very much done. So Oh I don't know why they wouldn't consider the source or what is behind the calories spent. Maybe that's the slaughtering something. We're talking about a set point. You know with the gentleman yesterday. We're talking to as depressed and there is something called a he. Donald set point like music every sure to average pappy spot. That your your biology sets you at. We're life circumstance set you up but they're also maybe other set points right and so by challenging their set points they don't WanNa hear it because it's how a a lot of people that are like all ask you if I want something but don't tell me and I'm like why why can't I tell you I I'll wise and that is an invalid and by the way. Maybe it's a little more valid. If I'm just telling you this this thing it's interesting by the way you do you force a you like saying take it as you will listen. I have on a very basic level on a very basic level I will have Olga gotta make Hungarian Food and then Olga will say to me how did it turn out and I will say it was good. It was a little bit salty and because the Sauerkraut is very salty. And sometimes you should rent it very well because otherwise you had it and and you put more song it gets a little salty inevitably Lynette. We'll hear this and go. Oh leave her alone you know and I go now. She made a good chicken popper cash. Or whatever I wanted to make a great one and she wants to know how to get from good to great. I'm telling her was was good. But if you're GONNA do it again. Rinse the SAUERKRAUT. It's like oh it's always a happy always just I'm trying to get a better better product. And if you're okay with that and old gays okay with that because organ once a better product to now I don't know why so. Many people take that in such a threatening way. But it's it's it is weird. I think you know what it is. I have a lifetime if time of being coached in told doing it wrong. Fix Your stands fix this fix that. It's all for all football does says tell you. You're doing it wrong. Fix this fix that. All improv class does doing it wrong. Fix this fix that. But they do an Improv class. And they go you. You'd come walking out on stage and go. Hey what's your name and they yell from the theater stop leave comeback. No questions ends. You know this person you have a relationship reenter here we go you and go. Hey you're not the boss of it's like okay. Screw that up. Go back to start that again. Go walking walking again and you'd go. I know you. We went to high school together and they'd stop. What what are you bringing to the party just walking with your hands in your pockets beholding something thank makes them space work showed up with something you showing up here? We go do it again. Go leaf go do it again. Never took it personally. Assumed I didn't know how to do the technique of Improv trying to learn Cynthia Getty would yell from the back of the theater. Shot Turnaround get off. Do it again. And I felt like that's because she wanted me to be better it Improv. She's doing her job all right. Hey Ryan thirty eight Minneapolis Ryan Minneapolis. You you had the yeah guy from. I believe it was five hour energy on a few years ago. Talking about salt water desalinization right. Yeah all I remember from that conversation. That's my knowledge knows Regar- garb super smart guy. All I remember from that conversation as me going. Why don't we have nuclear power power plants and he's going to be effective but it's not popular and we gotta get this years ago and he'd go of course it would work but we'll and we know one will do it because it's not popular and I kept saying so what so what who cares? What the you're by the way? My mom gets a vote on this thing because it's idiots like my mom who were saying no nukes who these people are idiots. They have no thoughts of listening to that returner. Plants are just pristine. I'm like why are we listening to dumb people. He's like if it's not popular. That's a real thing. Then we need to change that. Well okay saying but anyway. That's all I remember from that conversation. Well what we're talk with with the second part is I mean so water desalinization on his Asian and all the wildfires in California. What about all these lakes and streams and rivers that are ultra intro low levels? Wouldn't that help to have the extra water resources available to fight these wildfires. So you're saying do salt water tale innovation for to refill the dried up lakes streams that are at record he was talking about. Gary remind me putting like boats votes units offshore. That could do it. You know mobile units and pump it in look it all. It all sounds wonderful but we can't do anything in California just seems to logical. It's all anything helps the populist. No we don't do. I don't do that. We just we have a democratic radic supermajority and they just don't do anything I would ever do. Walk that they're worried about straws and you know and and shoot up shelter shelter shacks for the homeless and everything is way to regulate it way too expensive and they can't even get out of their own way and it's just it's just a mess. We couldn't build anything anything or do anything. We don't have an airport that works. Somebody was trying to get me to run for mayor and I was thinking God if I write it from the first thing I would do go right. Get rid of the whole thing doing now how second thing I would go. Hey we been the transportation leader of the world. We're going to innovate. We're going in the air going up. Sit Leonova could we at least have a traffic czar in a city with the worst traffic. I mean if you WANNA know. La La has the worst traffic in the world and we do not have a traffic czar. Orange County has traffic czar. I can't wear can't remember where Canada had had one to like Montreal. We all are something had Vancouver has traffic czar. We do not have somebody pointed to traffic. You understand I know. They don't want they. Ah opposite coming out of your vehicle and give you. They want traffic diet. They went lane diets. It's becoming apparent to me but that that this is this is the issue My problem however was I couldn't get from my house to the Burbank. AMC where the movie movie was playing on a Saturday because of all the traffic. And all the freeway being shut down and Blah Blah Blah and. Look if there's a monorail station I can walked to. Then I'd be more hand to do that. Yes but there is not they do they do they. Don't give you the alternative Montreal has traffics are Irvine. Only Irvine has a track. I always play a little game with whoever. I'm driving with Interactive Interactive Orange County. Because the county line. Tell me when you were there. If you're driving down the five I take video of it. It's it's very humorous. Oh my God it's just turns to crap. Wrap the second you pass over. Yeah sure why. This next door to Los Angeles is that some of foreign land that we are no association. Asian with its contiguous with Los Angeles one side Utopia the other side sh- asshole. Yeah it's incredible they are. It's awesome is there is there. Are Things compare it to your luck you down you go down the five you keep going down the five head into Adam Shifts territory there in Sunland and Sun Valley Turnstile Shit Amedee literally the road. It's not just what side the road itself and and it's it's funny. I like their little signs like all the equipment all the materials. The materials for the construction that never ends is tagged before it goes goes up the the I beams and stuff had been tagged by the gang. Bangers oh four they go up the freeway. The craziest thing is take the freeway ramp that they're building you know they. They do ten feet every two months it gets tagged as they go. Yeah when you look at a picture of it. In in your mind's eye you think they are demoing an old freeway ramp. Yeah I'm think they're going that direction. espy right right. Because of all the graffiti on the other they're going the other direction they just tag it as they go it's awesome incredible incredible Pluto.
