"I hope it is And and only if the healing takes place in the direction that I prefer. I certainly don't want to hop on the Bernie Sanders bandwagon. But that divide is real, and it's getting worse All the time. I recalled a kind of column I wrote on this is well which, incidentally, is also in my book Reality. Plane. Drug Guide to economics politics government in cultural get it amazon dot com at a bargain price. But I was referring to A letter to the editor that I encountered where the letter writer said quote Congress has a very low approval rating. So what did we do? For the most part, we voted them back into office. What our nation of idiots we are and quote Well, I regarded that that sanctimonious pretense of wisdom. As a consequence of someone who simply doesn't understand. The fundamentals of the body politic and the dynamics of our two party political system. As to Voting legislators back into office if an incumbent isn't re elected. Given the fact that we're going to be governed by Republicans or Democrats, not by libertarians or socialist workers, party candidates or any right wing party either. If an incumbent who will be a Republican or a Democrat, or an independent, like Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats. If it incumbent isn't re elected. Some other Republican or Democrat, will take his place and will be just as reliably a servant of the party's electoral coalition. That's why when it comes to the power of Legislative majorities party, Trump's person Now we contrary to what the letter writer said. Who said We voted them back into office. We didn't vote anyone back into office. There is no collective we in elections. Is you and I and them. Some people voted. Some of those members of Congress into office and other voters who strongly disagree with the first group voted some other members of Congress into office and for every winner There was a loser who still got plenty of votes. So we have 435 congressional district spread all over the United States of those 435 Congressional district on Lee about 50 if that many are truly competitive Each of the others is either a Democrat or Republican stronghold, for example, like Denver for the Democrats in Colorado or Colorado Springs for the Republicans in Colorado. Over the last 50 years, the reelection rate for incumbents in the U. S House as averaged 93%. It's slightly more competitive in the Senate. Because the voters statewide but incumbents in the Senate still get reelected and an average rate of 81%. Republican senators. They're safe in Oklahoma Democrats in California. It's true that polls show a dramatically low approval rating for Congress. I cited one poll from public policy polling that said only 9% in a recent survey. Only 9%. With Congress regards Congress As less popular than other choices in that poll. Including cockroaches, root canals, traffic jams and colonoscopies. That is, Congress was less popular than cockroaches, root canals, traffic jams and colonoscopies. But But what does that really mean? Well. Partisan Republicans. And partisan Democrats aren't necessarily unhappy with legislators from their own party for whom they voted. It's the other parties. Legislators they disapprove of. So the disapproval of Democrats for Republicans And the disapproval of Republicans for Democrats is mathematically combined to produce the low overall approval rating for Congress as AH, hole just 9%. Combined. You get it if congressional Democrats were to magically roll over and adopt the Republican agenda. The overall approval level of Congress would score would soar as Republicans and Republican leaning independent voters suddenly tell voters voters their posters. They're delighted. With Congress. Because Democrats had defected to the Republican side. While Democrats who hadn't defected and were still loyal to Tonto. Democrats would still disapprove of Congress, especially a Congress, dominated by Republicans, reverse the labels and get a similar result for whatever that's worth. So What does it say? Obviously, it says different people approve or disapprove of Congress for different reasons. Ironically, the most common criticism It's about Congress's partisan inability to agree and come together on legislation in the quote public interest, unquote But wait. Most of the people who express that particular criticism don't agree with each other on just what the public interest is. This is demonstrated in today's great divide between Democrats and Republicans between liberals and conservatives between North and South and Flyover America versus the left coast in the Northeast and Northwest. The difference isn't merely partisan. It's philosophical. Congressional divide is a reflection of the sharp public divide. Whether you approve or disapprove of one president. Joe Biden will now Meet the test as to whether he's on the uniter. Barack Obama certainly wasn't and Donald Trump certainly wasn't the uniter. The question is, can the country be united when there's such a fundamental disagreement and divide among the various factions? About half the country. He doesn't want to see or didn't want us. She see our nation fundamentally transformed, Which is what Obama announced shortly after the election that he would fundamentally transform America. Well, I have a good idea of what is the definition of fundamental transformation is and I don't want any part of that. But a lot of people in this country do want a part of that. Again and reflection, a mirror of the great public divide. What we find ourselves now this country driven by history, demographics, the economy and foreign affairs at an ideological crossroads. Democrats, led by the resurgent neo progressive Movement, with its roots in late 19th century socialist populism are intent on moving the country sharply left..

"The little i'm arnold hamilton editor of the oklahoma observer. And i'm marianne martin and this is observer cast your weekly deep dive into oklahoma politics and policy powered by the oklahoma observer democracy foundation when it comes to twenty twenty. What's done is well almost done. We long remember. This is the year of the deadly corolla virus pandemic. The most active hurricane season ever recorded the around. The clock insanity in the white house and president elect joe biden winning arizona wisconsin and pennsylvania again and again and again after the trump campaign requested recounts and file lawsuits and other election certification drama in a stunning defeat of an incumbent. President just couldn't fathom the lost the election in oklahoma twenty twenty will be remembered for the governor's bungling of a pandemic in a deep controversy over whether or not or even how schools should reopen with skyrocketing. Covid numbers tempers flared. And we grappled with the politicisation of what should have been a basic public health action wearing a mask in sadly. This year's election cycle for oklahoma democrats was also rather disheartening. But in the spirit of the holiday said for our forty seventh and final episode of observer. Cash for twenty twenty. We opted to focus on hope. Not about humbugs though. Twenty thousand feels like the darkest hours for oklahoma progressives. there were victories. Some publicly visible others. Not the pretend brighter days ahead even if the brighter days ahead required delayed gratification. In the hard work of organizing our fellow oklahomans. We invited state democratic party chair at least andrew to join us today not only to review the good bad in the political year but also to discuss the seeds that were planted in twenty twenty in the potential harvests in twenty twenty one and beyond all right. Tell us who you are in what you do. I am always shut andrews. And i'm the chair of the oklahoma democratic party. How did you find yourself in that role. What what led you to rent for that role. So i voted democrat since i was eighteen years old. And you know lately. I've been more involved in knowing who my representatives are and making sure that my representatives are not just easy to find online but find in my phone and in that quest. I saw some opportunities within the party and things that i like to see to strengthen my confidence in voting as a democrat and i decided to run to see if i could put some of those practices into play well and so you You've just been through a a major election year and Finishing up a first term here so what were the major hurdles and what were the things that really surprised you in the first couple of years on board. Now of the biggest challenges at the beginning of my term was that we were in a different financial situation than i anticipated. And so the first thing we had to do was a secure financial footing. So we we did that. Secondly we needed to focus on recruiting candidates in winnable districts A lot of our candidates in this cycle were self identified. We did some recruiting efforts but from from from the results of this last election. We now have the information on which to build a foundation on how to recruit for twenty two out with a surprise. So how bad was the financial situation. You know it it still. I still think it's difficult for some people. In oklahoma who remember the days when democrats dominated everything to imagine that The party a could have the kinds of financial struggles that it's had the last really twenty plus years well and and it's also the fact that people think that some magical vais funds the party and Our party is is basically ninety percent Individual donor based and when you don't have statewide elected and then you have one member of congress it people lose They lose their excitement about the party. They lose their will to donate in the party. And that led to and having that happen for twenty years than twenty years in county That led to us having An amazing amount of debt that kept changing every month of the other thing is that political parties are supposed to report their debt. And i think that we the democrats are the only ones who are reporting are dead and we just started reporting are dead in my tenure. So i. I don't want this to be in the paper. So aluminium say is that we had a large amount unexpected debt in that because we weren't reporting our debt well so How how did you overcome that literally. It was intentionally deliberateness right when iran iran on financial solvency. Because you cannot do the things that you need to do with regards to recruitment end engagement if you're not sure if you have a place to be if you're not sure how you're gonna pay your staff and so the first thing i needed to do was make sure that we can continue to pay gap. We could pay rent and so literally. I put my head down and focused on just identifying who we all and how we could Get everybody paid off We old thirty thousand dollars. When i walked in the door wheel thirty thousand dollars to our landlord right and you know. And that's that's a lot of pressure pressure and a small but mighty staff but you know looking them in the and every time i picked up the phone because i live in tulsa and they live in oklahoma city to ask them to do something. It reminded me. Oh yeah. I need to raise money to ensure that i can pay them for doing these things that we're asking them to do. And so just. Total focus total honing in on. Who are donald wearing and making sure that we were providing value we were able to even in a pandemic without being able to do our two biggest fundraisers able to pay a hard and you know put on some programs and do some things so if i start with a debt free slate i am excited about the things that i can do going forward so it a it was a was it a matter of selling people on a vision then because it wasn't like You know thinks have been going particularly well for democrats in oklahoma in recent years and that was absolutely at selling people on a vision and convincing them that i could execute said vision because i'm a relative newcomer to oklahoma democratic party politics in the workings in so selling them. On the fact that. I a head of vision in pink execute that vision And you know. And i started out right out the gate within the first ninety days putting on a premier training program for candidates in volunteers and matiz. These are the kinds of things we could do if we had money. And a will so Is is the old will rogers. Line that I don't belong to an organized political party. i'm a democrat. Does that Have you found that to still sort of a true in the twenty first centuries. It's still a pretty big unwieldy town that that really presents challenges that.

"That takes you back. Right? Technically, the name of the show was the many loves of Dobie Gillis. But most of us just called it. Dobie Gillis, the sitcom and late fifties early sixties on CBS. And our TV trivia Tuesday. Second hour question, which, by the way Is really for something this hour. It'll when you a gift card of $50 gift card to bone Fish Grill, So there's something on the line. Listen closely to this question. One of the featured players. On the sitcom Dobie Gillis is literally in the news today. The story broke last night. This character is in the news today. Can you name the character this person played on Dobie Gillis. Not the real name. That's bonus if you feel smart. But the character played by the person who I think the story broke last night. It's all over the place on the Internet today, the character Um, played by the person in the news from the sitcom Dobie Gillis. You have the correct answer. 312591 89 100. You can win that gift card to the bone Fish grill worth $50, of course. That number. 312591 89 100 also for comments about the news and conversation and let's begin over midway way with Edward. I ahead word. Yeah, baby, I still listen to you on that Saturday on, uh That's right. We would have a great time. We'd have a little Saturday. Not exactly like cartoons a little better, I think and the you added to the elevated conversation the dialogue of those days. A few years back, But I'm glad to have you here with us in here and now say, cookers. I'm sure you got other ancient scholars on there. I think as we move into the new year, with the vaccine being rolled out to the general public party, like in the spring or summer, people are gonna be increased. We, uh Impatient with these restrictions. You already seen it in Berlin, France. You know some places out there in Europe and there's could possible of civil unrest. Possibly so we'll have to see what happens. Well, you know, it's interesting. There is frustrating, You know, if if Nixon talked about the silent majority way back when President Trump to a certain degree, talked about the silent majority or talking heads, and I resemble that remark on occasion on these cable gabbed fests. Talk about people being frustrated. But But the other side of that Edward is the fact that you have politicians. And I'm sorry to say this. I won't mention the name of the my neighborhood out in this far south western suburb of Scottsdale. But sometimes guys get on homeowners associations. And it's like you think they became emperor of the world. A little power goes to their head. How much more So our was seeing this with the likes of a doctor Fauci or gruesome Newsome or Governor Pritzker here, Although he's a very Home cool and collected customer kind of understating it. And then you've got Cuomo in New York. Nothing subtle about that guy. And Joe Biden. If, in fact He is confirmed by the electoral college with 270 or more votes on December 14th. As the next president, Joe Biden is talking about shutting this thing down. And that's what scares me. Because there's a real dichotomy as the Democratic Party continues to move left word. Uh, forget it. I'll put it to you this way. My my Washington D. C lawyer Landel Our campaign stuff clean A Mitchell. You see her occasionally on these cable gabbed fests cleaner was in Oklahoma Democrat Okay. Oklahoma Democrats. Are we different? From the breed Democrat that that is gaining prominence in Washington, D. C. But back 20 years ago during the the Bush, Gore throw down cleaner, wrote a column for The Wall Street Journal. That was titled If The Left doesn't win, the left doesn't eat. It wasn't a slam. It was just pointing out the fact that so many on the left and it's true you have the super rich in Hollywood and on Wall Street and in the trial lawyers lobby and some other spots. But but you also You have people who benefit from patronage and who expect to have a government job, whether it's simple patronage or as a bureaucrat. These folks philosophically believe in government and government pays them literally. So that's why clean a 20 years ago wrote. If the left doesn't win, the left doesn't eat. I haven't talked to her about it this time. But if she were to re will write the article For 2020. I have a sneaking suspicion the headline would read if the left doesn't win. The big names on the left. Don't stay out of the slammer. And we've seen the media blackout on curious actions. Taken by Hunter Biden emails from his laptop that he left it a Delaware repair shop. Emails to family members strongly suggesting that there were kickbacks. Dad. And let's see. Let's let's review the bidding. Let's see. It's the Ukrainians. 100 got money from the wife of the mayor of Moscow and a big deal with the Chinese. So it's very, very scary stuff so Will the Democrat Party succumb to the temptation of locking everything down and put a smack dab in the middle of socialism? That's a question to ponder. Had 312591 89 100. But mercy would you look here on line three. It's our contestant. On TV trivia Tuesday. Dave We welcome you to the broadcast. Let me repeat the question and will take your answer. One of the featured players on the late fifties early sixties sitcom Dobie Gillis is literally in the news today. Can you name the character this person played on Dobie Gillis. "Sort of became the the hit and it must have been kendra kendra polls must have come back and said that tying by to fallon and fallon's budgets in education stuff. That must have pinged better in terms of support for kendra than talking about her far-right march. Because that's what the hitter that was that was the contrast that they tried to establish a kendra is is bipartisan and voted against x and y. The democrats wanted and then help with the mayor jones. In by the way stephanie bias in the pocket of mary foul and that was that was the the the race that they ran and they never really had a chance to liquidate the case to try to tell those republican soccer moms and edmund northwest oklahoma city. Hey don't don't forget that just a few months ago. She was firing guns. And talk in wearing mega hats. Basically that never came back up and so Whether that's i'm not the political consultant but that may have been when you lose by ten thousand votes in. It's really a five thousand votes. Swing used when you wanna lose essential by five thousand votes one way or the other that that little bit could have made a difference. I don't. I don't think we can underestimate either. The numbers that came in on straight party voting which just took by breath away. Yeah when you're talking about seven hundred thousand straight party votes in five hundred thousand of them being republicans so any statewide republican race. Oh you've got have broiled ryan against center in off sooner inhofe started out with a three hundred thousand vote lead to from jump street in. That's that's nearly impossible to overcome to try to find enough independents and swing republicans to come back over and to to to match the democrats which by the way and talk about another sort of depressing numbers when you look at the numbers switches when you saw at a hundred plus thousand new registered republican twelve thousand plus new registered democrats. And you think in this environment with this president. United states as bad as things are cova being what it is all of the things that he said about veterans. Which is it's oklahoma. A huge military state all the and yet more of our neighbors said yeah. That's that's a team. I wanna play with and i was. I was surprised by the well that that kind is what the the first thing that my blood really kinda rain cold because it was it was right before the election and The state gop cherry was interviewed. By a sean ashley and Dick prior in talking specifically about how they had a huge voter registration drives first of all. That's not what republicans do so. The fact that they were doing it was i was like. Oh that's not good in in with as as offensive as the president should be you think too. You know the values But that that was really terrifying as like this is not good because frankly you don't see that from the democrats you heard nothing about voter registration drive from oklahoma democrats and Yeah that was. That was bad news. Definitely bad news. Was we hit. We miss an opportunity for sure if we had if we would have had the opportunity to go out and register another five ten fifteen thousand folks in oklahoma county alone. That could have been enough to put kim horn over. The top would certainly could have been enough to protect kelly meredith seat. Kelly albright's gives me in midwest city and Chelsea brenham seat in north west oklahoma city..

"The sanctity of our elections, ism or important to have a sanctified and solid election system or who's President? I think the election should take priority, but we'll get into that. Jerry writes Lee. It's not as bad as you think. And I agree with your optimism. Wisconsin with 10 electoral votes, was down by 100.7% and qualifies for automatic recount. Pennsylvania 20 electoral votes was down by 6% and qualifies for automatic recount. Georgia 16 electoral votes was down by 160.2% and qualifies for automatic recount. North Carolina 15 electoral votes trump up by 1.4% and protect from Biden getting an automatic recount sense that the threshold is 1%. Arizona like 11 electoral votes with Trump down by 110.7%, Alaska, three electoral votes Trump won by a landslide. Yet the major media still hasn't called it for Trump. Nevada. Six electoral votes shows trump down just a whisker more than 1%. So while it doesn't qualify for an automatic recount, it's likely it'll get one by court order after Trump's attorneys present unassailable evidence of widespread voter fraud. Michigan 16 electoral votes shows trump down just a whisker more than 1%. Same thing applies. Trump is safe from Biden's recount requests and major states, including Florida, where he led by 4.5%, North Carolina, where he was up 1.5%. In Texas. Trump was up by a whopping 6%, where Biden is supposedly trying to flip Texas. What's more, Trump got more than 50% of what Biden got in California and 75% of what Biden got in New York. So again, it's not as bad as you think, and we have to wait for it to play out in the courts. I agree, Jerry. And thanks for sharing that valuable information. Although I sense I think since you sent it to me, some of that has changed, but I get the point definitely get the point. Robert writes Lee. I heard a news article about someone wanting the states to make a national mask make a national national mask mandate. Where are these people ordering their miracle masks from? I mean, obviously, they're using something completely different from the rest of us. Otherwise they would know that those available to us common folks. Don't work. Well, Robert, I disagree. They do keep you if you are infected from infecting somebody else, and that's the whole point behind a mask. When you see a surgeon working in an operating room, he's wearing a mask not to protect himself, Rupert to put to protect the patient that he's working on. But to answer your question. The Oklahoma Democrats caucus held a news conference earlier today, calling on state leaders to call a special section after the surge in Corona viruses. And it's lead once again by state representative Emily Virgin, who's been doing this ever since the Corona virus broke out. She is calling for a mask mandates. She thinks the governor's not doing enough, and she's of that ilk that wants to shut down the economy once again under the guise of Safety. We have to keep everybody safe, whereas I say we need to get out there. Keep the economy going. Take our safety precautions, which include wearing masks, washing hands and socially distancing. And let this thing run its course. Until we get a vaccine,.
