How Do Tanuki Work?

"In June of twenty, two, thousand, nineteen, a couple in a small village in Nottinghamshire Great. Britain woke at four am to an eerie sound they ventured out and discovered an animal that never seen before his thing and attacking a goat on their farm. After rescuing the goat they took a photo of the beast and promptly posted it online. The animal was four-legged and fluffy. It moved like a dog but had a face and markings like a raccoon. It turns out there unwanted visitor was a canoe Katie sometimes called a raccoon dog. To learn more about these unusual critters we talked by email to Jennifer Andrew, a member of the carnivore team at Zuid Lanta she helps take care of zoo, Atlanta's to to NUKII or and Loki. Zoo, Atlanta is just one of two zoos in the United States that houses to not the other is the Oklahoma City Zoo. Indra explained to new key our dogs genetically and morphological logically speaking they get the nickname raccoon dog primarily because of their similar coloring and coat patterns. The only other true similarity raccoons is that they occupy the same niche as raccoons do in nature even though they live on different partners. To NUKII range in size from about one point, five to two feet long that's about point four, five, two point, nine meters with a tail adding another six inches or one point, five meters they weigh anywhere from eight to twenty, two pounds around three and a half to ten kilos therefore can be golden great or reddish brown but their shoulders, legs, and the tips of their tails are blocked and their facial markings are similar to a raccoons including the black mask around the eyes. They're originally from eastern Asia including Japan, which is where the word to new key comes from, and where the animal is a cultural icon images of have appeared in everything from folklore and literature to anime and advertising the mythological versions sometimes called Buckeye Nukii, our spirit creatures, tricksters, and shape shifter's that love gold and are often depicted with a big belly and a particularly large scrotum. Many modern Japanese businesses, displays statues of to represent prosperity and good luck. To not the animals, not the spirits where brought the northern and Eastern Europe due to fur-farming back in the nineteen twenties it's believed some new key managed to escape and began to live and breathe in that region. The HABITAT, they're most comfortable living in would typically be described as forested everything from deciduous trees to evergreens, but they can live in urban and coastal areas they like living near water. When they're in the wild Turkey to picky about meals as forager's they'll eat anything from frogs, birds, and rats to berries and carrion that is vet animals to not have been known to forage in garbage cans or pick over roadkill areas inhabited by humans. But do life is a little different, not only art Niki given different food to eat including kibble hard boiled eggs, veggies and fish. But because they're naturally forager's and a non foraging, setting their caregivers look for ways to make feeding time a little more challenging. Andrew said, we like to scatter their diet throughout their habitats to encourage natural foraging behaviors. They also enjoy interacting with problem-solving enrichment devices that encourage behaviors such as biting, chewing, ripping shredding, smelling digging, and dragging.

"MLS number thirty thirty. One thousand K T. Okay. It's Leigh Matthews trying to tweet and talk at the same time. Don't do that spent like tweak into. It's like yeah. That if you can't tweet drive if yet text and drive, you probably shouldn't text him broadcast. An hour to hear the questions you're already on the air. What do you need it? It's amazing. How many people listen to me, but don't listen to me? This is the drive on NewsRadio one thousand eight four oh, one thousand star one thousand this half hour brought to you by new castle casino where real gamers come to play Oklahoma City zoo. I had a friend in town, who was sending me pictures of these zoo, she'd never been before, and she's from, from Texas and was just going on about how great this is, and it is welcome city zoo has welcomed a new member of the family is LA the sea, lion pup eleven months, old arrived in the zoo midday yesterday after being rescued and Santa Barbara harbor. Santa Barbara California, by the Channel Islands marine and wildlife. All the toot zoo officials say the sea, lion was found malnourished and emaciated at the harbor back in November concerned citizens called the rescue and volunteers with the nonprofit came out and rescued the pup. She was taken to a facility and rehabilitated and then return back to the wild. But after ninety days she was deemed reasonable by the institute's veterinarian to be released twenty five miles offshore near Santa Cruz island where there are other wild sea lions do you think she'd like to say there she didn't? Nine days later, she returned to the harbour, casually walked into the lobby of the Almar hotel, and right into the bar and order to fish smoothing. No, she walked into the bar looking for human. Contact officials say during her nine days. Back in the wild. She lost nine pounds and was brought back to the center. So from what I understand. It's not unusual. Specially if a sea lion pop is abandoned or gets lost, and then his taken care of, by humans they bond with the human, and then they can't live in the wild again, they have to have a human to, to, to feed them. And a lot of animals are like that. Which is why when you go to Yellowstone. They don't watch the animals because they lose their instinct to hunt and kill eat. And so, anyway, she will be quarantined for ninety days to make sure everything's. Okay. And then you'll see her start making appearances with the other sea lions with the lion show, which from what I understand, is an award-winning show. I've not seen the saline show. Been over there to the tank and seeing those there's a couple of huge. And so, that's, that's a good story. Nice story to hear that. Plus, they're so cute. So cute. Eight four zero one thousand Matthews Katie. Okay dot com. One storm chaser, is lay minting that the rest, you just ruined it for us. "Ninety four point seven k jail. Dallas Fort Worth z one hundred New York City over there with Elvis Duran. And then our dear friend, Ryan Seacrest at kiss FM out there in Los Angeles. We can't think everybody coast to coast enough for listening, and then also the Great Plains in the great state of Oklahoma from Fairview Enid, Anadarko Dunkin, Ardmore, Toca, everywhere, we blanket, the great state of Oklahoma. And thank you for listening. We really really really do. Appreciate it. So this is the cliff Davis show, and the Oklahoma City zoo is on with us. We've got Josh Candace Christie, and we left off with zoo. We're going to move forward. We're gonna move forward and Christie is tainted me this really cool book. It says images of of the Oklahoma City zoo, nineteen sixty two to two thousand thirteen I think this is interesting and cool because maybe dad's in there somewhere dad used to work with a guy you might not remember him. But back in the sixties his name was Bob Ginny. And okay, Bob. Ginny was the guy out there light the reptile guy. Okay. So dad would have Bob Ginny on the form and Scotty show, and they did a tie in with zoo much like we're doing, and I believe if I'm correct dad helped create this Zouqi. Okay. I know where I think that might have come from the former Scotty, and w k y TV as we know it to care for TV today. But so there's the time. But yeah, interesting Kristie dad might be in the book somewhere, but they can obviously get the book out of the zoo. Right. And that is the second we have to. So it's the first, you know, fifty years, and then the second half is they're very cool. Nice. Nice piece of you wanted to mention a couple of things real quick before we got out of the show. We got about three minutes left on this segment to at the top. So what were they? Yes. So one of the big things I wanted to share is the month of may is a great month and one of our favorites because we have a partnership with Mathis brothers growing on right now. Yes. So we love our partners at Mathis brothers. And during the whole month of may, you can go out and purchase a zoo friends membership or renew if you have one for a great deal sixty nine dollars for failing membership, and that is just a fantastic discount, and it's such a fantastic value. And with that membership you visit the zoo as many times as you like in one year, that's a great deal forever. And it's for a family so to adults and five kids just doesn't get any better than that. And of course, you're supporting Oklahoma City zoo because all the dollars from the membership sales come back to support the Oklahoma City zoo. What's great is that we have this in our own backyard. If you will the Oklahoma City zoo is so wonderful, and it's one of the best in the world, not just the nation hands down. Yes. And so I mean, it's right there. And and I mean, it's a good thing. And it's a cool thing that you're doing a youth driven stuff with events, and then also the family oriented packages as well. And with Mathis brothers. That's just great. That's everybody helping in and pitching in together. And and making it work. I love to hear that. I call the clip Davis show, the sunshine network. Like everybody just talking about good stuff. Want to be part of that family now? You're your. Circle. Josh. You guys, and I'll be texting you. And I need stuff is. Okay. And you guys do do the same right? Right. Okay. So other events that you wanted to mention as well that are coming up. Yes. So I know you've been talking about the killer. But there are some great shows come to zoo AM weird Al is coming in July, and June young giants and fits and tantrums in July and Alice Cooper. Got all to be really. Yes. So the interesting I mean, I think everybody knows zoo am I mean seventy five years of history, or it is just one of those I con ick historical places for Oklahoma City. And it is located by the cities, we don't actually manage it. But it is a big part of our history. And of course, you know, is right there Jason to the zoo. And so we're always excited to share what's happening and to promote the great concerts that are going on under the starry skies. Amphitheater live killer.

"It's cliff Davis with the cliff Davis show on the the program today our friends over at the Oklahoma City zoo, and we are so excited about having them on. We appreciate them taking the time to come all the way up here to the gorgeous fifty pin iheartradio studios and do the live broadcast live wanna make sure, but he knows this isn't a podcast. So we appreciate all of our listeners all over the world. We thank you very much. Some of our new sponsors. The John Wayne Cancer Institute, the national cowboy and western heritage museum. Of course, the Oklahoma City zoo, we've got the reports coming up with Kevin Griggs from the Grafton on sunset of should be interesting. He's always got a mouthful w Mike is he does he does a lot of stuff going on the strip out there DCF concert update. The killers Tuesday. So that's going to be a lot of fun. Also the cliff Davis. Dateline, we're gonna talk rejuvenate into being a sponsor that I got a great idea discuss it on there. All right as we hold hold our programming meetings on air also the legal help line, mardi Martin a dear friend of mine. He's gonna come on and do that with us. So of course to set him up next week it'll be able to answer everybody's legal questions. Okay. He's going to be fun as well. And in the cliff Davis. Cashcall is coming around. That's all I can say. Yep. So you can say that's all I can say just yet. So a because. Yeah. A big shout out to Nikki Griggs over there, raspberries and cream. They've got their new location going in at may and grand next Tony fos flowers. So we appreciate them listening and with no more further delay here. They are the Oklahoma City zoo. It's Kristie Mathis. She's got the zoo trust over there. But she watches after Candice Reynolds, she's director of public relations. And then Greg Haney director of marketing was going to be with us today. But apparently, he got a flat or something happened. So K, it's cool. But standing in. We've got Lucas he's the lead keeper of herpetology. Yeah. That's that's a lot of English. It is most people struggle with it and big word just means reptiles amphibians. And so what does what what's your what's your day? Like, what do you do over there? So my day pretty typical is going in. You gotta make sure all the animals are they're they're happy. They're healthy. And then you go through the standard routine making sure everybody's needs are met. And then we get to do the fun stuff like the projects rebuilding exhibits and so on so. Have you ever walked in in the morning? And there's a missing animal. What do you do know? Luckily, watching all of them, always we're always checking the tops of our closures and everything. Yeah. That's like number one rule of zoo. Thieving keep the animals in their homes. Look good. And I'm sure you do a good job of that. What's the craziest thing you've ever seen? When you when you open the zoo gates, and you went in. What's the craziest thing you've ever seen over there? It's really not as crazy as you would think it's pretty just standard everyday. Like, you see a lot of big cool animals, but to me, that's not very crazy. Yeah. So I mean, you guys have all types over there. So you've got a pretty big list. Right. We do. So and just in the reptiles amphibians bracket all kinds of different turtles tortoises, snakes, lizards, frogs so much you can see just under that group of species and who watches out like when when they're mating. I mean, what how how does that take place? I'm not so weird. That's a weird. I'm laughing 'cause. Collapse are known for mating. Because all of the sudden, you've got you know, three or four, right? Yes. Yes. Somebody got crushed on somebody and then fell in love or our that works. So how then they're out of cash because they spent all their money taking the other turtle out next thing. You know, they're giving up a house. Yeah. So it goes and max or big Lago sorts. He has three girlfriends so what he has to worry about that. Now, I knew it big time. And so honestly, a lot of what we try to do is set the animals up in like the optimum environment where they'll breed and do everything they need to do without watching. So some stuff like the golf goes towards is the public will get to see and so on, but usually reptiles don't want to be watched. So you set them up make them happy. Let them do their thing. And then you kind of watch for the after effects of reading behavior, so like digging a nest delay and all that stuff. So let me ask you this. Or are there different species that are more comfortable with viewer viewership back to the glauca storage? Definitely his, but are mammals the mammals do it to. Yes, they're they're kind of like, this is our thing. Yeah. This is what we want to do. It's very natural for them. And they're gonna they're gonna do their thing. We get to educate a lot of parents and kids almost. Every day. Some of the parents ask us to take max off the max is the big five hundred pound male. Like, I'm sorry. I cannot remove him from his lady friend. He's too big ghetto. I don't think want to get. Well, that's interesting to get off on this. This the interview with subject, it's cool. Right. So what what species are more private than wanna be behind closed doors and not have anybody watch. So really like a lot of frogs lizards and turtles, and it's kinda hit or miss by species. But Jimmy like the small more reclusive species. They like to spend a lot of time hiding they definitely don't want you to watch them breeding either. And I had a question now how how birds mate that they do it when they fly or that's a good question. Horford experts, but I can still give you the general overview S, basically so birds have what are called khloe Kaz. So that's kinda one opening that they do everything out. So some birds when they'll mate in the air. So they kind of like locked khloe Kaz and kind of like face each other and flap their wings or some even like free fall and mate. And then others it's kind of more what you would think it is. So they do have the lineup their special parts, but it's from normal angles. Interesting. Very interesting. Yeah. Right out of the game. You go the flow of the interview. Right. It's like a river. Okay. So Candice, you're director of marketing t tell us about your day. And how that goes. And what your job is like, and and what we can do here at the cliff Davis show to help you be more, proficient. Thank you. So the PR and marketing day, the Oklahoma City. It is never the same day. It's you know, the zoo's a living breathing thing. So we have something different every day. But it's always exciting. And so my job, I promote promote what's happening at the zoo. What's happening with our animals? What's happening with our animal experts are conservation projects, events, education, everything and everything. Zeus son is my job to what's a big deal. That's coming up that you want to talk about this really cool for Oklahoma City for the zoo. Yeah. Okay. Very exciting. We have a new series that were hosting in June. It's date nights. So cool. Yeah. This is our new goes with the top part of the show. Right. See I.

"It at the lowest possible cost. "Enough to be drinking this adult beverage. So Brandon, you're a long-time listener to the show, but you're also zoo guy, so what can you tell us about working in zoos and the life of a zoo person well to make it relevant to the show. I think my experience zoos has been somewhere between things that are sort of science and things they wished they were science. However, there are a lot of people that are really doing science. I'm just one of those people that mostly cleans up. Poop poop Smith the poop Smith. Yes. You may remember me from earlier episodes where I was referred to as the poop Smith. See I used to work at the Oklahoma City zoo that was my first job right out of high school and later did an internship at the Honolulu zoo and then we're workday. Gator land down in Orlando for a while. And it's been a good experience. Now, I'm here in Albuquerque working in the film industry as a wildlife consultant and going to the university of New Mexico. Finally, getting my bachelor's degree in in geography map. And and all that stuff mapping genius. My main interest biogeography and spatial ecology and conservation mostly of crocodilians and other reptiles. So have you worked a number of different zoos? I have a question of what if I've ne- person who's ever been behind the scenes that zoo going to zoo I like going to use? What do I look for? What makes a good zoo in your opinion from like the behind the scenes perspective? Well, I mean, the first thing I look for is just a naturalistic exhibit. You know, if they really put an effort into replicating the environment where the animals would be found in the wild. But also how do they do with enrichment? That's the big deal right now, the more. We learn about animal behavior of the more. We understand the there needs even reptiles. You know, that's been my main focus of crocodilians and stuff. We still provide enrichment for them. Kind of enrichment is a crocodile get sometimes we'll throw fruit in novel novel things for them to experiment with so in Richmond. And Richmond zoo context means just anything that stimulates them in their environment. Yeah. Crocodiles, you know, the people don't realize how intelligent they are. That's their first mistake. Exactly. And their last. So crocodilians and nowadays, you know, we're providing a lot of training and a lot of enrichment for them. You know, there's actually my former employer. Gator land was one of the original places that are really focused on training crocodiles. They do when you toss that piece of fruit enrichment to them a lot of times, they just kinda messed with it. You know, they're trying to figure out, you know, they feel it out and every now, and then they'll just go ballistic and crunch whatever you throw in there. You throw pumpkin in you know, there's this. I'm going to kill that thing. I'm kidding. I've never seen him death row it, but they just they just annihilated sometimes other times, they'll just kind of push it around, and you know, sometimes they get accidental enrichment I've seen them playing with volleyballs people have thrown in and stuff like that. But just as a note, you shouldn't throw things into alligator habitats. If you're a visitor, right? That is an excellent point. Please. Please leave the enrichment to the keepers. Let them make those decisions. There's a wonderful tiger sanctuary in North Carolina near where I used to live and for enrichment they would put they would take a Christmas tree and don't get in meats. And then toss that in there for the Tigers to play with have you ever done anything like that for for billions now because I don't really want them to eat the Christmas tree. A little less discriminating about what goes down the hatch. So. What meet soaked Christmas tree just like tiger catnip or how do they respond to it? I think catnip is tiger catnip, but they also really enjoy them because they can rub up against them. And then of course, they have the fun of pulling out of it. But obviously those are only available in the Christmas season. So okay. What else are we talking about? And in we that was a fun thing to enrich because we would just hide the meat in various places, and you know, sometimes you do the thing where you freeze the snack inside of a giant ice cube kind of treat them like Dwight with the with the jello office, buddy..
