From BlackPlanet to Black Twitter, the evolution of Black voices on social media

"Users have created trends and memes and viral movements and agitated for change for years on social media. Think April rain and Oscar so white. Even the black lives matter movement itself, which was born in a facebook post by an Oakland activist and took life on twitter now as protests over police, brutality and systemic. Continue social media is a tool for organizing amplifying arguing yes, it can also often be a racist dumpster fire, but experts say that a big messy public square might actually be the best place to create lasting political change. Omar Oiseaux was one of the founders of the social media, Black Planet and early place for black expression online as it happens, he is now a professor at Princeton, studying race and protest what we've seen since the rise of sites like facebook and twitter is the emergence of other sites of black expression, and in particular like twitter I think has become a real engine of articulating black concerns and a kind of forum where there's a a a a live debate going on around the clock, something like black lives matter as an example of an idea emerging on twitter championed by activists and organizers to become a national and. And International, movement and I think twitter is I think where most of that highly political conversation and action is happening. Where isn't it happening? We've heard for years that facebook often takes down posts by black users talking about racism, because the Algorithm flags it as hate speech, I'm not aware of facebook having any particular anti-black Iridium's, but I do find the algorithms that emphasize discussion among your friend of a friend network are going to have significant racial implications. White people are mostly going to be talking to white people. Black people are mostly going to be talking to their friends, and it makes it harder to have a a A. A A community wide conversation where white people can hear what black people are saying where black people can converge behind Hashtag, who might not know each other, but have common interests? FACEBOOK is really much more set of private conversations. Private conversations don't lend themselves to the kind of collective action that can turn into protests and have real political a consequences. You've said that you WANNA see a more fragmented multipolar internet. Tell me about that idea, and whether the protests and like you said this sort of engine of collective action has changed that thinking at all part of what was really exciting in the early days of social media was this. This kind of thousand flowers, blooming sort of experience there was planted out for the LGBTQ community and variety. FACEBOOK has homogenized the Internet. You don't have to know anything about html for formatting a webpage one of the challenges that you want to be able to have tools that allow you to moderate and have a kind of broad conversation, but sometimes you, you want to have a conversation within group conversation right and you know on something like planet out. You might have had a different kind of conversation than it is on facebook, and you know we may move towards something that's that's less consolidated, but the trend seems to be. Increasingly there are one or two dominant players in every aspect of the web and I think something's lost in that Omar. Oiseaux was a founder of the Social Media Site Black Planet. He now studies race and protest at Princeton.

Poland's judicial reforms put EU membership at risk, warns top court

"Poland's Supreme Court says the judicial reforms proposed by the country's right wing. Government are in violation of EU rules. And and could mean that oiseaux would be forced to leave the block well on the line from also Christian Davies. WHO's a journalist in Poland Chris? Thanks for for joining us. What are the proposed reforms that the government wants to push through what I think the important background? This is earlier. This in in the altern and the European Court of Justice issued a ruling saying that a body had been taken over by the Polish government am and had his loyalist Putin which which appoints punish judges had to be assessed by The Polish sue prem- cool to it helps to decide whether the judges in the the members of that body were appointed properly or not and and The Supreme Court of Potent then ruled that these People appointing judges would not am We're not legally appointed and what the government is now. Doing is responding by saying that police judges are not allowed allowed to declare other Polish judges illegally. Appoint judges as having as not being properly appointed and so the government is essentially doing is telling Polish judges that they're not allowed to criticize the illegal appointments of government loyalists am which is a escalation of the battle is being going on for several years The second point is at which is what the head of the Supreme Court was really referring to when she said that pardons that place in the EU is under threat was In order to preempt the fact that the European justice has been issuing rulings against will the pump has been doing with its own judiciary The Polish government wants to make it illegal for police. Judges to apply European law directly. They must instead Referred the question to the constitutional tribunal which is itself controlled by government lawyers. So what they're trying to do to shut down any avenues of not just descent but all the other court's ruling lead doing as legal so there's no actual mechanism for expelling an e you member so if the ruling Lauren Justice is this party doesn't back down on this. What happens next well at oversee it would be completely unprecedented? I think am him. What the head of the Polish cold is saying She's not saying it would be immediate. It would be instant that potent will be thrown out. She's he's actually just pointing out something which has been the case for a long time. which is The changes in the Polish judiciary giving the ruling party direct control. All of opposed judges are simply incompatible with the requirements of European law of European membership am at that is is already the case it would be even more stock if this legislation to go through and the comes a point when you can't Violate the basic conditions of of membership forever. So she simply saying that and the situation. The long-term is untenable which I think is correct and but no one has really got round around two to thinking what the consequence might be. Everyone I think both in Poland and in Brussels a hoping this will this issue would just go away. But it hasn't and I don't think it will I mean is the government likely to back down. Well people have been hoping especially I think in the European Commission and the that member states at every stage at the government will back down but actually this process started in the in around December. Twenty fifteen. So it's been going for four years and people have been talking about whether the Polish government might back down and for four years and they haven't so am I don't see why they would but now I mean one possible course of action for the e us to to not allow parents have voting rights. Well the mechanism the M depriving voting rights requires unanimity in the European Council which they weren't get and the the commission and the member states it's sort of went halfway up this path during the last commission and then realized they didn't have the political support to complete as they found themselves stranded so the next sort of way of doing it could be to restrict a funding through the next budget process but of course post war Poland has done quite cynically but quite cleverly is to a hold up the budget process on climate change. So am a potent knows that it's it may get less money over the over the judicial issue. And so what they're trying to do is demand more money on the climate issue needed to compensate for. It said what they're doing. The thing is dragging in all these other issues in order to make it extremely complicated and to make any effective action much much more difficult. I mean an the U. member since two thousand and four and it is a major beneficiary of e you funds. How does the majority of citizens Polish citizens feel about membership? Well if you am. Nearly every bit of survey data polling data suggests at very high support plus for leaving in in many surveys the highest level of support you membership in the of any member of the EU. The problem is not so much that people in principle The support meme should the the. It's the the Polish people have now twice elected a government which does not share at basic liberal democratic mctighe values which underpin the European Union so at which is why these Control see why these fights keep keep coming up so so even if one hundred percent of Poles wanted to stay member of the EU you can only violates the fundamental European values and laws for so long and that's what the the head of the Supreme Court was trying to say. Do you think finally we could see some kind of brexit contagion. I mean his Poland lightly to leave leave voluntarily. I don't think so simply because there's no public appetite title for it and a lot of Polish as people at whatever. The views on the judiciary don't really believe that there's any imminent threat opponent leaving the European and I think that's correct. I don't think the threat is imminent because it would be such a catastrophe and in many ways worse Problem for the EU than in Britain leaving. And but I I can't see any resolution to this quickly and it's it's been going on for many many years and it may be that supported. The government may start to reach this conclusion that they can't actually implement that program. They want which is actually a restoration of a form of authoritarianism opponent as long as you members visit and that is true at whether they drool the natural conclusion and start to advocate. Leaving Is another question but for now they Rather trying to do is simply to comment discontent discontent with the EU but not necessarily to support departure but that's a very dangerous game to play Christian. Thank you very much. Indeed that's Christian Davies. Speaking to us from

"Like, I know you're saying very important things right now tough. But it's just hard because I would pick up like, oh, I got it. But then I wouldn't be able to hear the top of the next because of the. Yeah. You know, and I was like shit, but she's talking. So she's like, what is the most important things from the speech that she saying, well, she's to me. That's where is like. But the government was trying to control it didn't work. But then her to meet her big thing was like we are the same like humans to were Hughes to like that was the big close. Visit by saying this the go ahead. There's a small, but this is where the where the goonies comes back, my friend. Did he was like she says, it's our time up there, which is a which is a line from the goonies and the reason for that. I think it's important is because again, if you if you have not picked up, which I didn't pick up on the fact that she was the other one. It's like, yeah. Like, everything that's happening has to do with the last thing she saw before she got captured like doing hands across America, she's referencing. She's referencing goonies like this is our time. But it means so much to her. And it just makes me so mad that basically. That logic. James? I have a problem with the movie now, she should have done a thrill at type day in some point hear me out with you as she's taken at one point. We like like hear me out every Christmas thriller shirt. And my thing is when she starts like to me, it feels very rhythmically in dance Oiseaux, she's like dodging should've just did a shame also. When they show the reveal at the that, the other I didn't this the first time I've thought the other one is wearing the thriller shirt, but inside out. Yeah. Jeeze? She is now now here's the thing that made me so mad though, alway no. So also the other thing that she did was she said some have some have. Like guest or the arise that. You can't they they didn't know how to split the sole right? There was something about. This is. Yeah. Yeah. You know, like so it was like almost like the class where Solis right thought it was. Sharing sharing the soul. Yeah. You know? And that to me again, I honestly believed that he put both. I think he put both of these tracks movie. I think he's talking about he's talking about the ignored people in America, the underclass, you know, the forgotten, you know, Bob, LA, and I also think he's talking about our dark sides that we've let takeover are dark cells that have have one out that we like we buried we try to use it like other people in power try to use it to control the others. And that that like ultimately went against them. And now we're like in this place where like the darkness is winning. Right. And I think he's doing both of those things at the same time, but they don't coincide to make some movie. Confusing. And the thing is though I'm like there's a part of me. That's like, well, that's kinda the whole point of the movie is that this is all grains, which we don't. We're not in. We we don't live in in harmony, we don't live in harmony as a science, and we don't live in harmony like within ourselves. You know what I mean is weird? 'cause I I definitely get the poor things to me is almost even more simplistic than that. It's like, oh, maybe it is what you're saying descended differently. Like is a fear of other otherness period. Like to see it is like what is happening in America. We use now is like a fear of Muslim is like that is just different than when I. That's what is lily the fear of just wherever is not what I am. Even even as I would, you know, if you're on the left is like technically people in the mid west are ones who feel like they are being left behind as well. You know what I'm saying?.

"On CBS sports radio. Siriusxm two. Oh, six the app as well as the ramp up to Super Bowl. Fifty three is tazewell underway. We've gone through media night, and some I guess some interesting storylines, I guess coming out of it. Bit of boring week this week five. You're right. Let's let's see hopefully things amp. Today's wednesday. Right. So maybe things are starting to put up a little bit. Hopefully for the first end of the week. It has. But I mean, you know, now people are starting a lot of the shows TV and radio shows are starting to trickle into Atlanta now on Wednesday. This is when it starts sprinkling in as we hold down the fort right here in New York City. Exactly. Right. So. I mean, it's it's it's it's interesting when you look at at certainly what what has been here. I mean, it's been Roby Coleman. He where he made the comments about Brady and his age and he quickly walk back. Those comments on media night on Monday night. When are when the Rams were the first team up to meet with the media, right right around, seven o'clock eastern, time doubt Atlanta at the arena. Brady and gronkowski grog dot confirming. I mean, maybe this will be his last game hatred uniform his last game in the National Football League. Who knows? We're not confirm anything just trying to take everything in. I guess it's a possibility that this could be as the reports were yesterday maybe Devin mccourty final game. Early thirties. He's playing a Super Bowl. I think just the third pair of brothers in Super Bowl history. Right to play together as Jason endeavour mccourty are gonna shoot up for the patriots on Sunday as they take on the Los Angeles. Rams. But it all he was and with the conversation yesterday when he was asked about it saying what better way to go out. Should we win the game? They're going out with your brother and winning a Super Bowl and walk it off the field. And that he's a guy that's made a lot of money. His brother Jason is a free agent after the season was acquired in the off season. And Devon's got one year left on his contract to former Rutgers scarlet knights star. So I mean, that's pretty much it. I mean. I was thinking about driving down this for like what's been the most intriguing story about maybe Donald active imposing and looking like the incredible hulk. Unbelievable shave be an NFL player at the level and being this deeper to pulse season, and they keep your diet, your intake, a food that clean and to train as much these training because he's putting some audio in to his how lean muscle. He has in thickness. That's hard to do. I'm just telling you what he's done. Well, you've been down that I haven't. So I trust you and say that that's right. The most someone asked him the question on on Monday night. You're why you keep on showing off your six pack. He's like I've worked by entire life today. I'm gonna show them off. I finally have them for the first time if you got him show. Sheldon. No. Story. I think could be kind of intrigued, right? You know, we've talked about a lot to is is the age thing with the two cultures and the two quarterbacks right that age gap. Could be kind of it's something that I think we all kind of lean back on with bell. Check is sixty six and and and mcface thirty three. So I mean, it's it's very interesting that that big age gap. And could we be looking at two coaches show where the future of the NFL meaning like when McVay sixty six he's as good as Bella check Oiseaux risk. That's the thing. Like, he's definitely the future. Mcvay? I mean, all these teams a model in their team. I wa I wanna head coach. I want him. Just like all right. Well, this guy shook hands up McVeigh once. Well, let's hire him. We're going to hire him. I mean, you know, so they want they want to do anything close to McVay all these teams. And and Bella check as we know respects him a lot to McVay. So I think that's intriguing that would be watching present I future or pass. You get my point. No, I Gotcha. I I understand what you mean. The the guy that that could be the Bella check of the future on the opposite of the guy. That's arguably the greatest coach the NFL has ever seen in Bill bell, Jack and what he's accomplished up there in Foxborough with the New England Patriots. Yeah. I mean, I do think I think that's interesting and McVay in his thirty three years of age has thirty three thirty four whatever it might be in his young thirties coaching in a Super Bowl against a Sixty-six-year-old legend embellish is certainly an intriguing storyline. But I'm curious. I mean, do you think it's a case of because you've got two things working against this game in terms of bus? I'm curious. What your thought is number one is there's the perception still that the saints should be. They're not the ran right of one. Yeah. Number two. People are tired of seeing the patriots, absolutely. Is it which do you think hurts this game and the interest war? Do you think it's the everything surrounding the way that the Rams got in? And they don't have to apologize for anybody. There. There was a blown call. We've been down that path. But clearly clearly that that has taken a little bit of the buzz away from it. And affected people's excitement gets more. So a case of my God. It's the New England Patriots. Again. I don't feel like watching Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. I've seen this eight other times in the past eighteen nineteen years. Why do I have to see this again? Well, I listen, but you bring up not one, but two points in my opinion moves, and I think that if you're the NFL the one that okay? You can't control that the patch. Keep winning can't control. And you know, the the NFL they probably was the I would assume they were hoping that the chiefs would have advanced and not the pats just because Mahomes is not good for the NFL. But awesome for TV ratings for everything is exciting is different. This Tariq, Al list? Just you know chiefs team is so different. And now you've got same old same old guys that just keep on grinding and winning these grizzled vets in the Pat, so the, you know, the NFL can't help that. But. You kind of look at the saints thing as more of a big era. A biggest dagger in the side of the body of the NFL because it went down the way down with a blown call right in the open-field. Yup. Lately game where if that doesn't happen and that close that flag know where most probably looking at the saints against the patriots be a little different though, too. If that was the case, I mean, I want to talk out his both sides of my mouth, but just hit me out. Now, let's say hypothetically, you had the saints versus the patriots in the Super Bowl. Now, you got oversold on a coach aside oversold on the you know, what action sale it's the season that's unfair. Call all these guys old but see very season men at the head coach spots very seasoned at the quarterback spots. Where would this story line with the Rams pats different young quarterback young head coach older season quarterback with the pats all older season? Coach what the you know, what the patriots long story long? I think that if on the NFL I'm really really pissed off about how that saints Rams came down. And that you know, now, we know Commissioner Goodell he's going to have a press conference. I think at one thirty or something like that. So he's got to say something, right? So how many days speed while you're looking at what seven eight nine ten ten days to come come up with something? Why? Right. And and he had every opportunity to say something eager done something last week, which I do think if he did do something as we mentioned yesterday Tara's if if Roger Goodell National Football League had a quick pressure from midtown Manhattan to address what happened in the NFC championship game. Take a couple of questions. I think a lot of people probably would have transitioned. They might not have been okay with it. But they probably would have been, oh, they they still would have been upset, but they would have transitioned reluctantly and moved onto the game. I think the head in the sand way that the NFL went about their business here. I think clearly as hurt it. See I grew the I think it's more. So a case of people are bothered by the pats by also people are going to tune in on Sunday to root against England. Of course, I'm doing that. I think people all of a sudden going to be true blue ram fan for four hours. They're going to root for Gough. They're going to root for McVeigh. They don't wanna see Giselle and company celebrating Robert Kraft. Register long are celebrating. They don't wanna do. They don't want to do any of that. So they wanna root against that. They don't want to see any of that. So people can still root against the patch. Right. So they're going to be the arch-enemy outside the greater New England area. But I think what hurts it is everything the way that they handle a NFL handled the NFC championship game. And I also think teams are probably spawned up aside from Robie Coleman. I don't think anyone wants to. I don't think anybody wants to grab headlines. No, no, no. You wanna stay low key Jones here. Right. And you heard that a lot from the patriot players where they were reminded before by a oh by Bella check before they headed to Atlanta. This is about the team this week is not about you. Right. This is about the team. It's about winning. This is why you know. So he made sure those guys. Guys knew going into it outside of what was set at the pep rally for the patriot faithful is that don't make it about yourself this week make it about us as a team and and to circle back you were saying about Roger Goodell like you're right. If he would've just did a quick press conference in New York City or something right after this happened a day the day after or a couple of days after okay, fine, even moose, even if you went on a social meet one of the social media platforms for the NFL or his own whatever Cadel on the NFL, Twitter, or whatever and video. I don't care if it's a selfie designed phone, you know, where he's video Celtics Saint something just anything that we would have ripped them. They did it on his iphone. And I know it's kind of that's a professional for the Commissioner of the NFL. But my point is the bare minimum at least, it's a statement. You know, at least he would have addressed as opposed to waiting until they get down to Atlanta for the Super Bowl. Okay. Yeah. Granted now all eyes and ears are going to be on them. But yeah, you know, as well as me. All eyes and ears. We're going to be on on anybody's NFL making a statement after what happened in that NFC game. So it didn't matter he still going to have the same amount of press. Now back to what we're saying about the patriots and people not wanting them to win. And and I agree. I'm one of those guys. But I'm a I'm a diehard football fan. So I'm gonna watch the game. But I bet you move. So let me pose a question. Do you think that they'll be a good chunk of casual fans that like the NFL, but if they're not a patriots fan? Might say. I've seen that done that. I don't feel like seeing this again, I'm going to go to the movies. Yeah. I don't want to see if you're an NFL Fantasma your watch you're gonna watch. Yeah. I think you are. So I do I mean, I I think I think it's tough to turn away. It's a national holiday on Super Bowl Sunday. Everybody watches the game. Such disdain for now. I know I. But maybe then you're okay, save you're at the movies. You're checking in on the score say if you're go, all let's go out to an early dinner, or let's let's go out for drinks and dinner. Then you're going to you're going to be following the game on on your on your smartphone. You're gonna make sure that you're locked in fans. What does he the conclusion of the season? I anybody that talks tough before the game saying, I'm not gonna watch watch everybody watches the ratings are off the charts. They're going to be good. I mean, it might not be the most highly rated game of all time by the majority of NFL fans are going to be watching. I think it's difficult to turn away from the city. A lot of people about the halftime show, a not happy about the maroon five it's kind of like, you know, I guess from five, but I mean out of all the artists that are out there Becky younger Hepworth, Donald Landon as a zillion artists down there. There's some great hip hop artist down there, you know. And it's like, I just say maroon five, well, I breathe. For what Gruber he's to make everyone happy. What group? I think you've got to have a mixture of John Lewis when people are not gonna complain right? Save. I was like it's going to be Bon Jovi, young farmers. Yeah. You got big BOI from Outkast part of it. Right. So what about if it was outcast from Atlanta? Well, you know, something we we we talked about mentioned, you know, about six eight months ago as a possibility with down the Super Bowl big boy people be complaining say why outcasts was like ten fifteen years ago is that why that's true. What about future? How about in the news a lot? Now. He's doing good stuff. Meek mill please affiliate guy. I know that meek mill one of these guys I get it. But I also think they want ASEP rocky. You know him. I don't know. He's he's over like Rover rocky. I'm not kidding. He's big short. No. I'm not familiar with as sap Rocky's work. Oh, no. He's really be. I mean, I don't listen to him. And I'm wondering what is the best way? The winter is it. Okay. Now, a fountain. You don't want to how how deep is your water garden? How how deep is it? What's the debt not freestanding fountain? So it's up in the air. Oh, okay. Maybe. Okay. No. You're gonna wanna drain that because that's not gonna work during the winter months. So you're gonna wanna drain. It is an automatic fill fountain or one you actually add water to as you need it. Wanna add water to good? I would just drain it. And and then unplug it and leave it be till spring and make sure your drain. Well, that's what I would do. That's what we do with with any of ours. We just unplug them and we drain him. So it doesn't freeze and crack. Now in the past. I've been trying to cover them up of water out of the basin that doesn't hurt that helps to. Yes, that'll help freezing below. No reason why you can't continue that. Okay. All right. I was trying to make sure that I was taking care of it properly. And and he gives me something that would work. "Donald Trump ever did anything dishonest, and I'm not accusing Oiseaux Wiesel. Berg was the financial executed of that. And so when I read that yesterday, I was like, whoa, you know, Rome is really burning and to say that Donald Trump is not happy about that. I think to him, this is even scarier the microphone you hear over and over again. And I hear this to from my sources. There are a lot of people who are described as knowing where the bodies are buried. The bodies. Very, very personal journey in your personal slash business CFO or the two people that that is those are the two people by yourself, certain kind of operate. Yeah. So if there are any body bearer barrier whispers those the two people. So fill the president's financial ties that his relationships in business terms with Russia and other places have always been. The background of this investigation have always been in the background of people's suspicions about how he dealt with Russia over the course of the campaign how his campaign did. So this guy might be the key to answering some of those questions. That's right. And it's also suspicious because the president has sought to keep this information secret for so many years from that from the public, despite the protocols and practices of presidential campaigns in the past. And so that's why there's been intense public interest in its finances. In the tax return. We simply don't don't know what the investigators have at this point. But why Hilbert could be very key piece. In their investigation. Michael Schmidt has always your reporting spree. The other being story you had in the times yesterday on special counsel, Robert Muller reportedly examining President Trump's tweets as part of his probe into the obstruction of Justice or the potential obstruction of Justice is this surprising that Muller would look at these public information? I would assume he would look at all the tweets. I think the way to look at the tweets is what if we found out he said these things in private would our reactions have been, and I think that we would say, wow, I can't believe the president was doing this. I can't believe the president was trying to influence these folks in this way and because the president has done it publicly, we kind of lose sight it. So if you're looking at trying to understand the presence intent, why did he do these things? Why did he take all of these different actions with sessions with Komi with his own lawyers at the White House, then you have to look at the things that he said self. You know, these statements that give you an insight into his thoughts and. Most lawyers would tell you if you're under investigation, don't talk about it, especially if you're under investigation for obstruction, you really shouldn't talk about it, but he has continued to do that. And if you look at the forty, nine questions at Muller wants to ask Trump about several of them are just about as public statements, right? He's saying, you know, we talk about this case. It's funny somebody said on our set several months ago at Watergate, we had to comb through and find the tapes with President Trump. The tape was a nightly news interview with Lester Holt that was broadcast at ten million people, right? And that makes it makes the potential for the private tapes to be that much more salacious because if he's willing to say all these things in public, imagine what's being said I'm driving, I'll just say not with any do any of these specific tweets. But in the context of the presidential campaign on the basis of all of the reporting that I did at that time, every single Donald Trump tweet was repeated was preceded by him saying the same thing to people around him a hundred times. Fifty times twelve times sixteen dollars. These are the things that he would be obsessing over it saying to hope, Hicks, campaign staffers. He'd say them over and over again, and then they would pop out of the tweet or the tweet was the first thing on his mind between it and then repeated to everybody around him with more profanity with more emphasis. These are never isolated things that Trump comes up with tweets. Once these are the things they're the, they're the things that are on his mind at that moment..
