" The oilers have nodded their second round series at a game apiece with a 5 three comeback win over the flames. Zach Hyman snapped a three three tie with a shorthanded goal of ten 14 of the third period. We did a good job and just battling her down two goals there early in the second. Off of too many men penalty and then we just worked. Leon draisaitl and Duncan Keith each had a goal and two assists to support Mike Smith, who was sharp in stopping 37 shots after getting pulled early in the opener. Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist for the oilers, giving him 20 points already in this postseason. Tyler to foley's power play goal early in the second period gave Calgary at three one lead. The oilers will host game three on Sunday. I'm Dave ferry.

"All right, we just talked a little bit about the battle of Alberta and how wild that was from the sketchy goaltending and defense to the four point losing effort by Connor McDavid. So as we record, we're looking at game two, but let's just look at the series moving forward, right? We can't expect that we're going to see ten plus goals every night in this series. So what do you expect now moving forward in this series between these two better rivals? I find it impossible that Jacob markstrom will play this series like he played game one. So on the Calgary end, I'm thinking defensively they will be better. The oilers need to have Mike Smith get back on the beam. And for all the people that say, oh, see, Mike Smith can't play well, he could play last series. And it's three days later and the oilers, they give up the two goals in the first minute and it should have been an indication that it was going to be a little bit of a wild night. What I am interested in, if Chris tan of can't play or can't play through Chris panos capabilities, McDavid's going to run roughshod. Right. Like Calgary needs pan of in the game. To help combat that. Not for all of the minutes, but for a chunk of those minutes. I do think Calgary's a terrific team. I really do. I think they're better than Edmonton. And I had them winning this series. But I mean, I don't think it's going to turn into a bunch of two one games. But I do think it's going to be a lot more scoring. Lower scoring than 9 6. Yeah. I mean, there was a physical element to that, which I think lends to. Calgary wants to play the series. You know, Edmonton isn't going to out physical. The gallery flames, right? But do you need more in that? You know, or does dregs, they played that way. Like Edmonton has been for about two and a half months. They've been pretty playoff prime. They've been physical. They've gotten good goaltending. They defended much better. I think that's what they hope to achieve. Certainly the first game it was like everybody's hair was on fire 51 seconds into the game and it was ran around without any thought at all of a sudden they're down 5 one. Yeah. And yet, there was still a game. It was still a game, right? So I just think it'll be close. I just think Calgary's got a bit too much in this series. Okay. Over the east, man, it feels like the Tampa lightning earned three people mode. And there's a lot of ground to cover before they get there..

"Co you must be nineteen and remember stay cool and always play responsibly so we literally can talk about whatever we want and lock. The nfl is big right now. I lost her survival pool a couple of weeks ago. Pick tennessee Wasn't such a good pick. So now i have limited interest in the the Survivor pools. But i am dialing in more to the super bowl odds. I don't think anybody is shocked by the tampa. Bay buccaneers plus five hundred. The buffalo bills buffalo was a little shaky early on in the regular season. Those really good aren't they. They look to be really good. We'll see anyone in that group that catches your eye like the green bay packers and plus eleven hundred. I feel like marley. Green bay should be a little bit better odds than little higher. I think they're a better team. Anyone catch your eye well. I didn't know the rams were as good as they are. And so. so there's there that's who i'm going to say you know like arizona's off to this amazing start but i don't know i just like the rams i i think there's a better chance detroit doesn't win a game. How long have they saw long time. Like the lions terrible since forever. Yeah usually get hammered. Every time he admitted your browns fan right. And now i mean it's it's fashionable be browns fan. I i like the look. I'm a bit surprised the kansas city. She's not a bit a lot surprised ebbing. They struggled pretty early in the regular season. I thought they'd find their way and they just don't seem to be finding their way. But have you seen the odds speaking of the detroit. Lions to go winless who the regular season like. Do you think there's a chance they go. Winless of there is a chance. But how good of a chance do you think you gotta think they're gonna win somewhere. No right yeah. I think so but the odds right now according to kubeck dot. Co and and you can put money on this. They will go winless plus nine hundred minus three three three three that they do not go. When in the case of drags my one of my favorite movies boulder. Yeah and you remember the scene where the manager gets them in the shower. And he's yelling adam and he turns around to his coach and he says coach losses. How many losses. We got goes. We got a lot of losses. Say so that's what i think of what i think of the lions masses. Well you can check it all out online.

"A fan of the edmonton weiner's sacher. Just a fan of the sport. In general it doesn't appear that you've had much of the way of growing pains in making the jump from the toronto maple leafs from the east to the west to the edmonton honors. Has the transition for you to this point. Really been a smooth as it appears been It's been pretty smooth and it's been it's been really fun but obviously when you when you move cities and windows moving you're picking up moving your family. There's there's some growing pains there with getting a house and getting a new car and getting situated but from a hockey and point and from a teammate standpoint. it's been unbelievable. and and the city's been incredible breezy point here. So everything's been really good. And i think the auto credit for the guys for being so welcoming because we do have a bunch of guys who amend and that's exceptionally when you're kicking around all this stuff at the end of last year that you know you're in discussions with the leafs. Is there a way to make it fit. You probably had a feeling one way or the other. But what's that decision like for someone who's at home plan for the leafs and you can see kind of where this is heading like. What's that last couple of weeks like a lot of sleep. The it's It's a hard time just because there's so many moving parts and and it's not just the hockey decision the vision the family decision to i need ten months. But i'm timing. I dunno seven months summertime and thinking about you know. where is your son. Grow up your wife's moving ways. She's from toronto. Atlanta's and i always kind of having a family here have. Both of our families are in charles. So it's not just a hockey situation. It's it's a ally situation but we're really happy with with the decision obviously and tamaki implant. It was so easy. We've definitely like. I said that i thought would would work really well and then instead of four but one of the most important parts fat precision was actually born outside and and the city and seeing where. We haven't seen where theo or summer grow up and alanna never been then so when she got there and was able to see all those things that we've been easier decision process and we're really happy. So you're you're playing with austin matthews. Who's probably the best shooter in the game or next to oversee the best shooter in the game and chances are you're going to go to edmonton and now you're gonna. You're you got to play with mcdavid or dry seidel. It's not like it's not like you're getting short thriftier. Like what have you noticed among these great players you've got to.

"I don't know how you fix it. I mean like people. Can you know all they've got to make changes while you've got the same players you're not trading those players. You're not changing those players. How can those players be better more consistently even their own team. Says the same thing. Jake muslim who. I a feel or sense of moslem that. There's there's not a lot of bullshit jake. Muhsin agreed and so he said at the beginning of the year we we've learned a to be a little more mature in our game. Yeah well right now. They need to stick their noses in. They need to get their hands dirty because they may think they are. They're not san. Jose deserved the win. The other night they played the night before and montreal. Toronto had four days off five days off. They should toronto. Should've skated those guys into the ice. And it didn't happen and not much is happening throughout that lineup. With the exception. I mean michael hutchinson and his game wasn't very good right now. They've got the injury maroshek. Sounds like he's getting healthy. Jack campbell for the most part is has been fine if not better than fine but then you look at the defense. You mentioned muhsin david camp. Who's a real good defensive forward. His numbers aren't good defensively. Their power play isn't like you're the coach your sheldon keefe. You're looking at it. Gone aside from juggling that lineup. Where do you start. Just start with the power play and say okay. It's been it's been five games but really it's been two games. Yeah i've been six games. It's been two games because matthew knives visas about but everybody's hung up on the setup whether mourner belongs in the middle or on the wing against san. Jose couldn't get in the zone right no matter what your setup is. They couldn't get in the zone so they're not sharp. They're not right. Some of it can be cured with with a little bit more as we used to. Call a little as my dad. You say a little more elbow grease right like you get you get to work here. All all throw allies patterson from the connection. That's too there are times when a player thinks they're working hard enough and they're not like pederson says. Yeah my game's not right yet and you know what think back to his first year. How many times did you see him. Just tenaciously winning pocket. Back as an always on the puck like pavel data. Klay there right now. He may think he's doing it. he's not in. Toronto is not committed enough to get themselves over the hump to let their talent takeover. They're not yet and they better get there quick. Yeah agreed likewise with the chicago. Blackhawks this imprint. They're they're not but that's the way it appears. And i didn't think that they were going to make great strides. But i did feel that they were going to be better. And maybe that was putting too much stock. And bringing in seth jones and marc andre fleury and of course jon tapes being back on the ice leadership role and being healthy again. That's just a great. Nhl story but it just it. It feels like they're coming apart at the seams with that organization. Like on and off the ice while i was there for was there tuesday. I guess now and it was their home opener. They were playing the islanders. They played a good thirty minutes really good thirty minutes and then they just fell apart in their start. One in five their minus fifteen in goals like that is a debacle. Mine is so..

"Sergei rabovsky who's been booted in the shins for the last few years for pretty average play spencer night as well. They've got aeronautic bled back joel quenneville of course behind the bench. He said he sees a little bit of you. Know the the blackhawk copiers in this panther team. Yeah terrific start for them. Edmonton is connor. Mcdavid on pace for like two hundred twelve points again. It's crazy start for him. Their power play is unreal. I think two things that are going to be key for the oilers have been terrific so far one is the play. Duncan keith now. He's not duncan keith. From twenty ten but he has been really good yeah. He's been very good for them. That helps certainly on their defense. The others are goaltending has been more than adequate. Mike smith i and then when he got banged up a bit and he'll be back later this week. Apparently mika skin it's it's been been more than adequate if they can do that in goal man at mcdavid and dry seidel there now. They got hyman. And and pull yari. As and ryan nugent hopkins. That's that's a good team carolina. I'm surprised that they got like ten or eleven new guys. I thought they were going to have a little bit of a feeling out process. Freddie anderson's been awesome and goal for them. You know so. They're they're often running in the team. That i think they're one of the better teams but it surprised me how much they've scored early as saint. Louis a write in david perron had a hat trick. The he seems to be getting better. You like saint. Louis is where he thrives right. You're right. he went away. Played elsewhere back to saint louis. It's just the place for. Yeah all right. So we go through the undefeated. Which probably won't be undefeated when you're listening to the podcast. That's fine some great stories out of the gate so now let's kick over to the not so great and we'll start with the toronto maple. Leafs who again are playing the undefeated carolina hurricanes this monday night. So perhaps that takes the maple leafs in in a different direction. The morning skate children keefe essentially changed everything. He defended nick ritchie and rightfully. So i felt in talking about okay. Everybody in the media. Want to gravitate to nick. Ritchie isn't a fit with matthew matthews minor. Finally said okay. Well you could ask the same questions..

"He's he's going to be one of the greatest players ever play the game in my opinion You know he's he's just a he's a he's a these. These ahead is another level above everybody else and he obviously got the hockey sense in the hands. And it's it's it's the speed that goes with the hockey sense of mahan and the drive and the passion and the commitment of the determination e. He's you know when he starts but he gets that those wheels going come through the neutral zone. He sees defensemen backpedaling like crazy. Because if you get this flat-footed a little bit he can blow right around you and he does it every day. He does it every shift. He's driven doesn't all summer long. You know he's in the gym. He's driven to be the very best that he can be. So when you when you when you pair that up with with the skill set that he's got the determination along with the skating and hockey cents in the hands. He's he's an incredibly special special player. He's going to be one of the greatest players in the history of the game in my opinion when he's when he's when he's finished but certainly here year and right now he's he's in my opinion. Get to watch as the slam dunk. Mvp of a national likely. he's he's. he's an incredible player to watch on an everyday basis. I don't think too many people arguing of all those points kenny. When you look back at this north division amine again. It was assembled because of the pandemic and because of geography and the fact that the borders are closed and the restrictions and all of that is. Is there a part of canadian division. That is worth considering moving forward or are you in the camp that look as soon as we can get back to the way it was. Let's get back to the way it was well first off. I would say you know. I think this was a a fabulous year for canadian hockey fans. And i you know if you're a fan of a canadian played everybody nine and ten times. You know a over metron. We're gonna play ten times over five years or we played nine times this year. So it's going to take four and a half years to play them an nyheim so i thought it was a fabulous year it all. I'm of the mind that we go back to the to the divisions that That we had. I think it's a sport is a the kennedy. Us league and certainly would be unique and different to have an all canadian division. But i think it's important that were part of of the of the entire league and We get back to the divisions were in that would be my perspective. But i certainly can understand if somebody else got a different perspective because it I've watched a lotta division games here in it's been exciting I'm sure the fans have really enjoyed it. Do you find that. It's hard to keep track. Everybody else i mean you watch keep stumbling over the same teams and somebody asked me about tampa's lineup. When i had to take a track and go back where the back. When are they coming by. It seems like two different lease. Yeah no i'm with the i. I've talked to some other managers. You know you just played in your own division. So it's like you're in your own little seven teams or three team division south of the border. But you know. You're so focused. First off the schedules compaq. Did you know we're playing. It seemed like you're playing every second day. And if you're not playing you're you're you're you're traveling somewhere so And then when you got a night off you're you know you're watching games and you seem to be watching your own division because you're you're either playing one of those teams tomorrow. You're playing them. You know two nights. From now syria you're trying to keep a top tier division Watch games other division..

"This but he was what donald trump wanted talk. He it'll be dropping after the election so but anyway go ahead He he was very good at bringing people together and making deals and he said i can't make this happen. It just won't work. People aren't going to get behind a huge bond issue while all this money is still on the astrodome. So that was that was the that was when it became clear to me that this thing was going nowhere and yesterday they were going to lead on of course now. We had all prophets of doom saying. Well it'll be forever before houston gets another. Nfl years Many years was at i. Five four five. Something like i think. That's right yeah but And at that point The the the jig was up. That was all that was That that was all that could be done. That was going to be done. And so now we start getting these visuals bud shutting off to nashville and and putting his deal there in place so they They did their deal. The oilers were supposed to play in houston three more years while the stadium was being built in nashville and that turned out in the first year to be every bit the disaster you might have predicted welcoming. It's become a lame duck thing right. My understanding is that with the end of the ninety five seen as we ninety five seasons when it was announced but when was it in the air was it was a before then or was it really a surprise in at when the announcement came in and of the ninety five six. I think it came into focus for people and ninety five. Yeah and so. They're supposed to play three more years and ninety six They had crowds not every game but some games of fewer than thirty thousand fans. I mean you know. This is football country. That was unheard of good team and gm whatever People were just a past the anger stage. It was. we don't care anymore. They've decided to go so we're sort of writing them out his spree at least out of our current context and so the league stepped in and got everybody together and they decided that. Go to memphis because there is a suitable stadium there and play for two years there until the stadium was ready for. That's what happens in the fans in memphis didn't like that either because they knew they were the a situation there too they were just a temporary waystation right and that too i just so how about jeff fisher the coach at the time right he. I think it's lost on all of us in this. Is this fisher. Obviously a big a character in where the The now titans sort of came into being but fisher was the coach of this thing. Ninety five and ninety six. I mean he must have and frankly brought them back to a little bit of respectability but how does he and his staff and the players have handled all this. Because we're talking about a very Traumatic kind of period of time. The last year's in houston the the couple of years in memphis while the nashville things sort of plays out and then ultimately trying to domicile in nashville. That could not have been helpful or or easy in in this process. Either no fisher. Fisher was a good man. He'd he handled it professionally and even stoically. He just kept his mouth shut. He took his lumps. They did the best he could with what he had. And i think it's fortunate he was rewarded by getting to stay on. He had been on staff. He'd been secondary coach before he was promoted to head coach. So he he been around. He knew where the bodies were buried. He knew the personalities involved and he just Just bit his. His lip is on in and and kept his head down and handled it. All is well as anyone could have. Thanks so it was good that he got to have a taste of success. After i finally got smash so as the team is overstaying. It's welcome i guess. Ninety five ninety six and the team sort of Fumbles its way into tennessee. And then ultimately to to nashville by ninety nine so give me a sense of was there any feeling of abandonment by the fans and or the sports media there and houston or was it kind of good riddance and i guess. The the the kicker of that question is what were the houston fans and maybe even the sports media feeling once the titans in their first year in nashville when all the super bowl. Was there. Sort of indignation where those with certain closet rooting for the team or was it. Was it pretty much a clean break. Because you know you had your chance and you you left us. And we don't really care how you're doing going forward like i guess. The lingering fandom is there was there is there still any During that process of leaving and then ultimately where they've been living for years since well a there's always gonna be some nostalgia. I mean i the years. I still occasionally get an email now then from somebody who said i just reread your book. It's always going to be a few. But i would say houston process the oilers leaving and ninety five well really and ninety five. There was there was anger that there was righteous indignation and there was some and it wasn't all directed but out. There were the diehard fans. Love the thought that the city and the mayor should have done whatever was necessary to keep the team and used so all that was processed by ninety six. The deal was done. He signed his contract in nashville. And so it's it was. Let's move on and that's what you said he did it. Was you know whatever whatever thought there was put into crowfoot all in houston back then was what are we gonna do to get an intake. And i don't remember just when but you know. Discussion started about a new stadium You could do a new stadium even with money owed on the astrodome. If bud wasn't going to get the benefit because he had been the guy who Who did the shake now. So by the time the tennessee titans went to the super bowl. I know that houston really noticed. It was it was though the The seattle seahawks non to the super bowl. I that's that's my recollection going back. Close.

"In terms of their stadium deal for but now i wondered. Now that i'm thinking about it The dark years. I guess of the early Most most of the early through mid eighties. I'm wondering what kind of effect the be. Usfl's houston gamblers. Had during that time because that was a pretty exciting team in a very interesting league obviously in the spring. All that kind of stuff but Did the gamblers relative success or at least interest or difference. I guess from what the oilers were at the time did that have any Competitive or lasting or any resonating effects on the stability or the interest of the fans of of the orleans franchise in the nfl not a lot. the gamblers did have success. Jim kelly corson's was you know. I mean he went on to be an excellent. Nfl quarterback But they were still the newcomers of the oilers worthy establish brand. I don't know if anyone was ever absolutely convinced that the Usfl was going to endure so it was an issue. But i wouldn't call it a real big issue before we get into the demon amount of the of the team and ultimately and sort of oddly Getting into tennessee and ultimately to nashville from your recollections. Like what was it about this team. I mean in covering it. You you mentioned you weren't the beat reporter by suspect you spend more than your fair share of going to games and and being part of the coverage of the team. Both in their halcyon days as well as in their lean years in between Any particular memories aside from ones you shared already that sort of popped to mind that either are indicative of of what the team was just stuck out in in terms of people and personalities and and frankly maybe along the lines of where your book goes that kind of maybe evidence kind of the. I don't know the the i want to call it lamentable. Because they certainly had their their playoff years of of success but they never to your point earlier. Never really kind of one at all. Right in i i. There's a point which i guess oilers fans sort of almost became. You know resigned to the fact that this was just a a team that was never going to get there. You know it's it's it's the same old syndrome. I'm just very briefly. We saw it at the university of houston their basketball program. You may recall fi. Slamma jamma the Child louis teams. That went to the final four. Three straight years lost and so guy. Lewis was was a bomb because never won the national championship while years after after they did get rid of him or after he did leave they they they pined for forgot lupus. So there was there was some of that effects with with the oilers. I suppose what defines the era. I don't i. When i when i think of defining moments i think actor the bum phillips sears I get a number of from matter from the eighties was wanted. You do at practice where we stood around for two hours on. That was hugh campbell. Then when they got better under glanville it was Glanville passing out. He had if i remember. It was an army helmets. The sort of thing soldiers were in the trenches that he handed out to after a game a special teams player who exhibited the most kamikazes zeal. Took out a player on the other team. That sort of thing Glanville sputtered it around wearing this silver belt buckle about half as big as he was and i think i said the column one time. He pushed it into the stadium in a wheelbarrow in front of it He was a. I think everybody knows him. He did some tv commentary later on He was a bit of napoleon tight and the he had a certain had a certain cadre players ought into his act and went for his inducements and a probably bigger group. That thought it was all pretty ridiculous and Again they had good talent because mike holler back drafted the came in as i executive vice president or something like that and then eventually became general manager. He was in charge of the graph the whole time so he had a number of years there and and they had a names. I mean if you follow pro football you know these guys. You know the name. A bruce matthews and mike munch shack can dean steinkuehler had some injuries. Arrays good as those guys but he was talent as well so there were so there were wineman. I always suspected they drafted wineman in the first round because they were cheaper to sign but in any case they They they played at a high level. But i'll tell you one memory that that that comes flying back a playoff game in denver mile high stadium Glanville decided backed up down inside his own ten yard line to run a gadget play. That he called stagger lee and he had a pass go out to a receiver. The flying but it wasn't passed. It was a awkward past was allowable. Well it was recovered for a touchdown by the broncos who went Went on to win rather handily and so there was an illustration of how all trying to demonstrate how clever he was put his team in a big bang. That's that's that's well. it's perhaps emblematic. No around this franchise. I mean i put that in context because the you know the the ending of the story houston just seemed to be. I don't know. I mean maybe in hindsight you could sort of say you could have seen this coming but i wonder at the time when adams was you. Know trying to rustle up The stadium issue in this this case just just a number of years after not even ten years after shaken down the the The county and the city for renovations to the dome he was back with proverbial ten gallon hat in hand Clamoring for a brand new stadium altogether. Right which wasn't gonna happen right. I mean when how did you see this from your lens from what you remember this story kind of playing out. Was this sort of a. They're out of here in slow motion or or was it not that clear in your mind. What was going to happen at this franchise in the nineties. Well it became clear To me personally the day. I have that conversation with bob near the mayor. When he said i can't lanier was a was an old fashioned deal maker. He was a real estate developer by trade. Very successful one. It became a very successful politician because he knew how to make deals. They was probably shouldn't say.

"An army to get him to get him on the ground but for sure and and all the the video shows it right. I mean and it's also even more interesting. I did to clarify. He was Earl was the mvp of the league and seventy nine but he was offensive player of the year. For seventy eight seventy nine and eighty and he was. He was also the offensive rookie of the year. At seventy people. Sort of forget that Earl made this splash coming right out of college right which is certainly possible. But it's not always the easiest thing making that transition from the collegiate game to the pro game right. Yeah he was that good He didn't he didn't miss a beat. He was as dominant force in in the pros as he had been in college. Yes that is. That's very rare. Well so tell me about the love. Love your blue thing right. Because i'm i'm just really curious about how the fans sort of took to this right i. It's interesting in my research. And i knew enough. I mean i certainly remember the that original houston oilers number one song which i think by the way we'll will have embedded in our episode. Once we drop this. But i think on a per capita basis the houston oilers may have had more official and unofficial theme songs in their career than just about any team that we've explored. This far would.

"Both college and pro and used well. So what i'm guessing so if you're at ut around nineteen sixty five or so that. I'm by my estimation then means that you were and this is a theme in in a lot of investigations of various teams and people remembering them and stuff. Your formative years right. We're probably around those first years of not only the original houston oilers but the afl and particularly specifically right overall and. oh by the way the houston oilers. Were the first champions of this new. Afl in six. Yeah sure absolutely. Yeah they had it was it was very much a minor league back then and we understood that it wasn't the nfl until the merger but still it was It was football professional football. It was our team and Yeah we were very much at all. Well so when does. When does the the story and this book for you and the the the i guess the chronicling of no pond maybe pawn Of the of the team and other of their doings when is it one is cross. I guess time wise for you from being a childhood fan and maybe even an adult fan into this is the gig. You're covering them in your now part of Telling the story maybe on a daily basis or even more so Of the oilers. Well i had gravitated from austin ba- city to chicago and then back to houston and became the lead. Powell missed On the houston chronicle nineteen eighty. So i was you know while i wasn't reporter. I was around team a lot. I've made virtually every road trip. I thank again. This was a different era in the newspaper business. I mean we would send six rioters in two photographers on the road with the oilers and so I was. I was present for all that i was at Usually during the season i was out of. While i wasn't football writer i was still at practice On average once a week. And i wrote a lot about the oilers. The book came about when the publisher came to me and said. Hey we want this We want you to do this. We will like your work We think there's a place for this book and here's an advanced and we want you to right. Well it's interesting that that around nineteen eighty or so is when you're kind of i sort of Spilling some ink on the oilers team because this was probably about the first time in their nfl existence i e after the The merger in sixty nine and seventy Or arguably the merger was underway before that. But because this is sort of the first real taste i guess of the oilers actually being competitive with bum phillips at the at the at the Know behind the scenes. You pulling strings and earl campbell. Of course Blazing away I i. I'm just curious to as you become sort of more shall we say professionally responsible for at least some level of covering and commenting on this team What was sort of the oilers experience around that time. Because i think that's when a lot of people really maybe for the first time generation. Only certainly i can remember growing up in the new york metro area. You know the oilers were actually one of the teams. You'd hope for would be on monday night football because they were actually exciting and fun to watch. But that wasn't always the case certainly in the first decade in the nfl and certainly a longtime away from their early success back in the beginnings of the afl. Yeah well the one constant In oilers history was the owner ks budd adults. It was an oil man the son of an oklahoma oilman. He grew up in bartlesville in northern oklahoma and made his way to houston in the oil business became involved in watson other businesses as well and he was a shower say quixotic figure so they had the earliest success as you mentioned one the afl championship the first two years but he made some interesting and unfortunate personnel choice in so long way and then a wandered in the desert for quite a long time in the early nfl and yeah I moved back to houston in nineteen seventy five. I started writing sports in houston in nineteen seventy eight and then became a columnist in nineteen eighty so i was present there for the the bum. Phillips are what's called the love you blew era. Shown it you know it's pretty hard. It's pretty hard thinking back through all those years to describe it in a way that stat tile to people. Who weren't there. It was probably i still think the greatest love affair between a city and a team certainly a team that number one the big prize in in the history of american sports. I mean houston was just enraptured with the oilers and we had you know fight songs and all kinds colleges sort of atmosphere and they went to pittsburgh lost the first afc championship jayme lead played in and they came back and the word had gotten out that there was going to be a sort of a pep rally to welcome the team back home. I mean they got hammered and pittsburgh. I think it was thirty. Four or five as and nineteen seventy eight season. Yeah yeah and in and they asked for bone was bursting at the scenes. It was overflow. It was giant party For a team. That had just gotten clobbered in pittsburg pittsburg was immeasurably more talented team. I mean that was swann. Stallworth and bradshaw. Ham and lambert franko harris and mean. Joe greene. i mean you know this was a whole team hall of famers and the oilers had campbell and was pretty much it for. I mean real superstar level towns and yet bum phillips had these guys playing so far over their heads that the city just became infatuated women than they went back to the afc championship game in pittsburgh the following here and lost again much more competitive game. That might have gone differently if not for a real controversy or call catching the ends. And so you know. The cowboys had pretty much own taxes. Up until the bum phillips days but during philip's tenure there. I mean there were radio stations. All over the state. I mean even in west texas clearing the oilers games that had had no interest for and i it the whole state not to say the cowboys were forgotten or lost their following. They didn't but they certainly gave up a big chunk of it to the oilers..

"Houston and frankly people in texas in the afc The afc or the the current of see whatever and the old afl for that matter What a what a story this was. And frankly in many respects kind of continues to be the legacy of very much lives on the the colors and the The the logo the name and of course the history. And we're going to get into the story of the houston oilers this week. With our special. Guest ed fowler. The reverend ed fowler retired but still actually a real honest to goodness anglican church minister slash. Reverend ed fowler is an interesting part of the story here to We'll sort of get into that Interesting career change. And what was ed. Prior to his higher calling shall we say he was a longtime sportswriter. Yeah lies largely in the the houston metropolitan area with the houston chronicle but before that Places like the austin american statesman the kansas city star the chicago daily news here closer to us or what used to be closer to us back in the day when new newspapers were thing and sports writing in those newspapers were more than the thing they were probably frankly The sort of unwritten reason. Why a lot of people actually subscribe because the sports section was Not only journalism but also Diversion from The The distractions of of crazier world in the earlier. Sections produce paper but ed fowler as an interesting story himself but also the topic at hand that we're going to get into. We're going to use him and his Book that came out in the late seventies late nineties. Yeah i go. There was nineteen ninety-seven in particular And this is how we sort of discovered in an and got in contact with ed. The book is called. Loser takes all but adams key part part of the story for sure but adams bad football and big business. It's really the story of the houston oilers and sort of how it came and a mesli went and and our conversation this week with fowler gets into the story of the book the story of the oilers and as you can imagine we we try to tackle the attended. Yes pun intended All of those issues relating to The ops and certainly there were a number of them But largely downs especially on the way out of the The houston oilers. Now of course Represented in reconstituted form as the tennessee. Titans and yes. We talk about the tennessee oilers for a couple years again that messy departure from houston and at last check. Not a whole lot of oil in anywhere in the state of tennessee. But now that didn't stop the team for still being called the tennessee oilers for a couple of years before they Firmly and Officially domiciled themselves in nashville Two years many forget were a prior to that in tennessee in memphis at the liberty bowl. That's where they were known as the tennessee oilers. In before becoming the titans are all part of the the lower and the legacy and the very interesting stories. A related to that and The clip at the beginning kind of gives a sort of a hand. It certainly is debatable. As to win the era in the late seventies kind of started It is known without Conjecture however as the let's call it the love ya blue era. This is around the time. The nineteen seventy eight seventy nine eighty or so when the houston oilers were probably amongst The hottest if not in cer- certain areas of nfl football the hottest team going with an amazing array of stars including one Hot rookie by the name of earl campbell. Phenomenon really is an understatement. I guess not only in houston but in the nfl itself and it took a little while to kinda of geel into what actually became a trademark phenomenon. Literally called love your blue. but most scholars Would kinda circle around november twentieth nineteen seventy eight and the monday night football game that you just heard a little clip from the intro to frank gifford and howard cosell dan where the The oilers were hosting a nationally. Televised game against the miami dolphins and Was sort of a sort of a burst of of energy and color and noise That absolutely came across on the on the broadcast the poms waving everywhere and a hell of a game and actually many people think that is perhaps one of the best monday night. Football games of all time that game when the oilers One a very entertaining game. It's it's all there on youtube behind earl campbell. Almost two hundred rushing yards. I want to say he had one hundred ninety nine actually four touchdowns he ran for and the oilers one out and a thirty five to thirty Victory certainly others might look at some later games. But this was a national sort of shot across the bow so to speak and there's a lot of of of energy and end up going on there i some would also Frankly suggests that the next year December i think december tenth to Nineteen seventy nine to ninety seven about a year. Later was when sort of the love. You blew sort of trademark era. I guess sort of occurred but regardless of when you think it was also another monday night. Football game by the way. I regardless of how you sort of circle around it if you were there at the time and or you were just an nfl fan at the time. Paying attention is probably Burn in your memory. What this love. Your blue phenomenon was and it was absolutely ahead of time. Arguably the apex of the of the excitement that was this is franchise. Plenty of of of nadir's of course Along the way. But you have to remember that the afl when it was started the houston. Oilers were one of the franchises that helped launch that leak and we get into one of the chief protagonists. maybe actually antagonists as we get into Into the guy but adams for sure Was there at the beginning. And they're through the entirety of this team as well as how it went to to To tennessee ultimately He is The good guy certainly in the beginning years for sure Winning to afl championships early on And kind of making a mark for pro football in houston when there was none prior Certainly got got gets all the accolades. I guess around. I love you. Blue air for sure. But look he was also very enmeshed and hands-on shall we say to a fault for the majority of the years otherwise and I would argue that. Essentially not unlike the title of fowler's book The experience of being an oilers fan was largely. I wouldn't say necessarily lamentable but certainly heartbreaking and disappointing especially when They were tantalisingly close to simplisafe. Gloria that Frankly sort of alluded them not only in the love blue era but certainly thereafter as. Well we get into all of that. The houston oilers our first tackling of the topic with our guest this week. The reverend ed fowler and we look forward to presenting it to you in mere moments before we get there. "The Oilers put up a five spot in the fourth five in the third period to go away running away with an eight to three victory everyone's defective batteries are going to need to be charge that person a team that can just fly up and down here with the best of them and they got even faster three deadlines to the weight of the games played no you don't it's nice to have listen I'm the first guy that wants to have the size of the line up but if you look at both Chris and who is playing with your fifty second keep maybe the test for the NHL it's taking away time and space he is got a one two step that gets to the opposition he's got a great staff you don't see don't you keep running all around the ice hitting people when he competes hard really competes hard and he could be nasties got an edge to his game but you don't see him delivering huge hits all the time both crews could take a page for those who keep the competitiveness as far as what he needs to do the fans he doesn't need to be a guy that runs over people which elected to be a little bit bigger a little bit stronger yes because he just doesn't get moved off quite as easily but you have to be today since you have to be in a position to take time and space away from the opposition players have that could stick and that's what he's gonna learn moving forward especially playing with Duncan Keith and it's going to be a good challenge for him is a nineteen year old up against the Edmonton Oilers I don't know where the assignments are going to draw whether Germany's actually wants to switch some of the defensive pairing to give some more experience up against the house of the top offense of players but with Connor McDavid and Draisaitl separated now and they've done that since the beginning of the new year this team is taken off it's just figure out who you wanted to defend they thought that maybe the production would fall off from those guys not playing together both it's kind of been elevated to another level here they've got some really nice piece of the puzzle to fit around those two guys on their top two lines so it's going to be a real good challenge to seal the Blackhawks defend against this team that can really bring an offense of a five a little deeper into that splits fill with withdraw his style and make David you're drinking Jula the essence of a two game goal streak he played for two and a half seasons with that one two punch it admitted it there were times could you even skated with both of them being together as they were earlier in the season or separate as they have been lately is Troy mentioned coach Dave Tippett deciding it early January that was the way to go before he actually lost the David for six games last month including that fox five three loss in Edmonton despite being broken up their production certainly has not dropped one bit especially after a couple of deadline deals in Drake thinks that becomes an even bigger problem for opposing teams I think we have two players that that that are capable of carrying their own lines you may as well separate them and spread kind of spread the wealth I guess an X. if you know if you have them both on one line is maybe we have two superstars allies not really easy to check them but to do is worry about one minute than two or three or whatever I think if you have no cousin separate lines at that near night warning okay the signs come out of some of the signs come as these keep coming in waves and it makes it a lot more difficult than the going gets tough you need to go you can always put them together and you know that they're gonna create some magic can make something happen yeah there could be two games this season including Monday's wet dry settle and make David have combined for double digit points and now the James Neal is healthy he's now joining McDavid on his line and after a brief three game injury absence try no you really impressed with Tyler Yamamoto up in Edmonton he has looked very good against the hawks that last game up there last month packing that second line with dry subtle and a rejuvenated Ryan Nugent Hopkins so as far as top six it goes you know I don't know if you could find a better one rolling right now via in the NHL if you look at who Connor McDavid is playing with the kind of goal while they're still looking for somebody to to fit for a win position with him what do ever placed her better half the speed of the game and they picked up after the seal from the Detroit Red Wings he started off with that line of Connor McDavid moved down a little bit of gold this is the first and only the last four but if you look at the Ryan Nugent Hopkins the former first overall fifty there was a lot of pressure on him and what he the guy to take me to the next level no it's not his fault but now he's he's slotted into a nice position twenty six years of age nobody's talking about Ryan Nugent Hopkins anymore what tunes from the pills are talking about now Dr Seidel and ponder McDavid so now he's kind of gone under the radar here and he's been flooded in a much better position he's a very skilled player very talented player at the one B. type of level we've got a couple one days and it's really helped him a lot and I think that has Drake was talking about we see that happen multiple times over the careers of Joe today's attacks retainer sometimes they play together but sometimes they split it up because it's just harder to defend against the key that he was talking about two individuals that can drive alive and that's what you're getting with McDavid and Draisaitl offensively the way that they played and that's what you get from John contagion factor K. they can take care of their own lives individually for you get a real nice mixture no for the orders in the top six where I think it falls off a little bit is after that in the black box I think you're we're in a position that is the match of works that way you focus on shutting down the top two lines the focus on winning the game in the third quarter and while the hawks you know they haven't put together of the consistency that they have like the Oilers they've done that at this crucial time of the year eight three into over the last thirteen if they gave an estimate they've taken care of business on the first two stops on this road trip against the central division the Monday night let's USAAC city then going to Dallas the next night and winning in overtime by a two to one score different ways same results as they face what should be a desperate hockey team here tonight two games of solution in the natural pretty smart phones against also they really took it to us all game long S. Middleton I don't want so we need the points there yeah you heard Connor.

"Who was politely a defensive liability and so you have essentially this double boost of your EA stats if you on right like your defense has gotten better amongst your forward lines and your defensive pairings and I think that plays a huge role in all all of a sudden winning five in a row at home? Chew on this nugget Chompers Ready Slava Voinov. What number did he were? Sean Walker the number. Does he want coincidence. And Jack Johnson s numbered three and two six linus to. Yeah there's something in there We'll leave it at that. Yeah so so. You're going through doubt if you're you're out. He played the game. I'm going with Jack. I'm going with Jonathan Quick because at the end of the day this after all that. Yeah okay because this season is about. We said this season about answering questions nations and learning lessons and teaching the kids and the reality is you can't learn getler nothing if the puck in the back of your net. Every time he turned around and there were about a good coach. Show me a good goalie. L. Show you good coach And I think the strong play of Jonathan Quick over the last five games again we reference. Yeah okay it's Chicago. Yeah okay as Minnesota Yeah Case Troy but Vegas. It's a close game. They win it. You know the the goal the game winning goal late and Jonathan Quick holds on and in this game never really questioned Donovan. Quick I mean I mean okay. He didn't shut them out but he's basically shut them down. I mean and it's not like this was a night that edmunds and took off like they were writing. They were trying right but it was never in doubt. I don't think he's ever. I mean there was two zero one one of those three one. No Jackley Josh. One hundred percent right. He said he leaned back and he said look. Yeah Yeah two goal lead is the worst. How you know Blah Blah but when you've got rice idle and mcdavid on the other teams seven goal lead to nothing is essentially zero all because I can minutes shifts to show uh-huh yeah? I think we are going to wrap it up on that. Unless there's any parting words you WANNA leave King signs with. Thanks for having me. I'm show thanks for flying all the way from Chicago just to celebrate Elleray Jeff Carter thousands game arms because they're still doing yoga and we've all got to go backwards spider or whatever who's coming up regularly it is I have my I have my singlet on underneath my suit so I gotta get hot yoga frozen Rozen Yoga Yoga's it would run counter to the but anyway and that's going to do it for US kings fans will be back Saturday afternoon. "I told him to shoot the bus when he doesn't but in no point has had a lying pug waiting for him just delay into his team. Team goes. I've said it before. This team goes his Co. Tacos. Yeah so copay big night. This team is probably going to be successful. And if he doesn't if he doesn't score it's going to be tough sledding. Yeah to get a win. So he shows up on the scoresheet again tonight which seemingly does Su Times? They have they have. That line had a big night. Jeff Carter sign had a big night. Yup I mean your top. Two lines are going to carry right for most of the time and they did tonight. It's good to see that I'm not gonNa try and take away from his skills as a distributor but again I don't understand why for the bulk of his career on the power play when you see him. Whatever twelve years into his career? A first opportunity to wind up always pocketing wires. It like an incredible shot we've still got him shackled to the right half boards trying to distribute the puck for a power play. That just doesn't were talk about the powerful H.. Just I bought a power play goal tonight but it boggles my mind like you just saw tonight. You saw this is a guy who can undo something that nobody outlook name me. One Guy on this team that can shoot the puck like that from that from that far out. Kyle Clifford on this team like on the roster. Well there's one guy in the press box that can I'm honestly like maybe ten years ago I don't know like now he's still. He was a perfect shot though. I mean absolutely Louis. Oh and I've said it before I'll say it again. There may be players who are just as dangerous as co Petar from that far out in that part of the ice. But I don't think there's anybody. More dangerous than Andrzej coping. What was her with that shot at? Sarah why doesn't he shoot more. He doesn't you're not yelling loud and that's exactly right. Shoot Yell at him to shoot on that play not on that play but he was taken aback. I did duck down during the second period and watch a little bit of the of the game from the lower bowl and I did. y'All shoot. I think we all were yelling. You've got the this that she there tyler. Toffoli with two goals and an assist direct correct. Yes Jeff Carter with goal and two assists lost to Andre Qatar. One Goal Michael Amancio goal all in assists ago. Give any idea why they called for a challenge yet because I think Kyle Clifford was in the crease. And he may have made contact contact inadvertent contact with the goaltender and it and it may have prevented the goalie from getting to the place where he could get to stop the puck. But I didn't look on. The reply. Said saw nothing nothing wrong. Yeah Yeah I mean He. I mean it looked like Clifford had a little bit of contact with host the the oilers guy but they both pulled hold up before they could hit Coskun and I said it wrong on twitter and immediately had like fourteen guys being like Mike Smith is not in red anymore. Sorry Lick maybe. It's Mike Smith and AMIGA COSKUN JERSEY. I don't know but you know they definitely pulled up and so watching the replay. You're like They didn't actually there wasn't significant enough contact to to call that one back at the referee's when they came over for the challenge it was very you know it's it's fairly quick is probably GonNa stand what struck me. It was how quickly edmunds and called for the challenge. I don't remember it being that I mean I almost thought it was called down from the league because soup before the Horn had even started blowing. You were on the PA.. Saying that's and actually I didn't know that it was challenged at that point. I just asked came over to look at the the review and when I said the planner of you and he said Yeah nobody said at any point plays being challenged here. Here's my would have announced that potential theoretical reasoning. I I also. I don't think that they had any concern of dealing with the king's power play. They got it wrong and to have got it to three one. At the time I I think it was potentially like a well might as well take the chance. Yeah why not well especially given the Dreidel mcdavid or good for two points a game I'm on a good night. You're no on tonight. At that point it was three to one. And so yeah you can. I'm begging come back at three two one now. It's a little tougher. Yeah I mean you'd really that's a good point. The power play is not ten percent of dating they they got a little little bit momentum. I think they just had to take the chance. oilers power play is very intimidated. Stork good I in the league. I talked about it in the pre game. Show what did I say. It was third on thirty thirty two percent number one if as I think. They're fourth on the road but I overall yes. Oh Yeah it's pretty incredible. What what talent like that? What do you expect well Andrew Another Ah arena in in which the Kings excelled tonight right the penalty kill? The kings. Gal is just as bad as the power power took another another penalty tonight right my friend Adrian Kempe he is my friend. You always complaining EXP- penalties. I mean I don't feel like I'm alone. I don't know that that's something I complain about. So much that something collectively the world just saying about just throwing it out but no a great night for the penalty killers a great night for the defenders that clip. That's going around on twitter of Sean Walker Stripping Leandra Seidl of the Puck Dave. I had a chance to talk to Sean Tierney from charting hockey. I Know Jack and Sarah This because I asked him during the game so ask you seven. Yeah it is you know. So he's talking to Sean and he said that He was telling me. All the different statistical categories that Sean Walker leads the team in but he said he's second in war. Apparently hockey has a wins above replacement stat. And I said well well pump pump the brakes I need to know. WHO's I if Sean Walker Second Zaken so who do you think is I I guess? Kyle Clifford House wrong. Wait in wins above replacement. Yeah Oh boy uh-huh Your spoiler you're not gonNA get it do. I'll be incredibly abreast. Michael Amodio no Alec Martinez Really. Yeah not this arbitrary. I would guess that Algorithm apparently Alex rotter. They've got like Dumbo Rail Cortina's but like it's not not Andrzej copay tar right not doughty Jon. Quick is Alec were Tina's but again an excellent penalty kill tonight. Sarah was earning you saw on the penalty. Kill that impressed you or did you feel like this is just an overall. I think it's yeah I mean I think commitment team defense. They helped by the fact that I don't I I never really felt like Edmonton was in control of any of their power plays. I didn't watch them feeling terrified of what was going to happen next And I you know I think that they just they were aggressive. They weren't just sitting back waiting for something to happen. which is You know when I was watching being the Arizona game those two power-play goals that they got scored on The guy the guys who are just watching the puck and we'll do something and this time they actually. We seem to commit to being aggressive on the penalty. Kill and not just waiting for something to happen to them. There was that shot Jack I think in the second period where mcdavid curled out to to the top of the slot. And you said something like Oh brother Oh no. It was any wired shot maybe like what a foot wide one in a million. Dave did that we. Did you see that I did see I play. I had the exact same reaction. Whenever he gets the PUCK on his stick? Yeah forget it. He starts circling and because he's so fast and has so many different angles that he can turn he just eventually gets one step ahead of the guy chasing him and at that point. You're just like oh on. Yeah and he he got the slot after you circled about half the zone and shows he's fun to watch I tell you really I mean even though he only had the one goal tonight or whatever only the the one goal we love watching him as he in town love watching him in La. I don't know if he's as he wa- is he won. I think he's won one game in his career. I think the kings have won like fourteen. The last fifteen going to take a guess an estimated guess that he's won one game in. La Yeah I mean that's pretty impressive. Leads the All Star game to like didn't the Pacific Division with him on it off to she'd never want to La and then he came and he lost both. Yeah so I mean I think the lesson here is the Connor mcdavid is overrated bump. Of course I think one of the bigger things about this game was that of the five game home winning streak. WE HAD CHICAGO MINNESOTA IN DETROIT. And it's real easy. Look at those games and say you should win the WHO cares ask you know that. What did we learn right? I mean as Jack and I said in the pre game show Minnesota in L. A. The only teams that are basically out of the running in the in the. Yeah allthough at November after this game. Oh but We did this. How many times well not seriously streaming Kirch wealth turn into the near Guy at home over Vegas and Edmonson and not a struggling Vegas but a vegas is now starting to put together a future Stanley Cup winning winning while Saturday in Arizona? I mean they lose on Monday night to Arizona now Arizona comes back here it's a one. PM game they're are undefeated on Saturdays. This season it.

"I did it again. Thanks there's three parts of that sentence I never get him in. This started over. Do Three two one. We are here in the Bob Miller press box high above the ice at Staples Center feels better joining tonight announcer. Dave Joseph doing tonight. Delo Jesse Jackson Lonski origin. Tonight Jack No title. USC Alum Jackson blocks almost all right well. USC student injectable Lonski. How're you doing? Great honor making her pockets. Debut editor in chief of jewels from the crown. Sarah of PAT. How are you doing pretty good? So kings win all right. We'll have a great night. Yeah Dave Yeah before I get into a real stat fake stats. It's this was a shutout again Jessica. Because come on what are you like. That was not his fault. It doesn't matter it. Mad went in beautiful. Fasten matters to me. And I'm calling this a win streak. I'm calling this part of the win streak. Four in a row at home game in Phoenix done. Oh at home but four wins in a row. The game in Arizona doesn't count so that was the stat that the real estate is five in a row at home. Gotcha Sarah did they win this game just because you flew flew out from Fu Chicago. I want to know what Sara thinks the game sandwich and I mean we see it every night. So what did you. I mean they won. They looked good. Connor mcdavid. David mcdavid only did one thing like. That's a huge huge point. David and that's it gets three-game minus three in the first period. What was weird is that he did it in a shutout? Shut up strange very strange. Now just throwing this out here for daily Fantasy I had Ryan nugent Hopkins Condom in. I don't know you pronounce his name. Leandra Seidel cleft guy. Ha Ira that's so you're welcome change. I went ahead. And chinks the oilers by loading up on them in Van Penalty. Count for anything to get it. But I feel like I contributed but three stars of the game plus Plus Three for Jesse three game. Doughty Jesse Martino not numbered Quick and quick now I hope it's our and Jeff Carter thank you. That's I wanted to say Jack. Yeah no half gardener. What year are you seven right now? Now Dave you and I just spoke yesterday. We did for people when they're listening. That's about Tyler Toffoli. And the fact that he just wasn't scoring enough and even in the back of my mind is we're having that conversation was the the idea that if he scores two or three goals and a little spurt. He'll be right back where we want him to be tools tonight. Is that enough to back you off of him. I'm a little bit. No okay because I WANNA see the next game fair and I want to see the next game. It doesn't always have to be two goals in the store but a goal here goal there couple of assists every night. Yeah that's what I WANNA see from Charlotte. That's that's tyler. Toffoli that kings were banking. Yeah that's the seventy three. That came up in what twelve during the first cup run. Yeah no fourteen fourteen thirteen fourteen right right. That's that's Tyler Toffoli. They've all been banking and that Tyler Toffoli hasn't really shown up until now right if if he keeps in a one game span. Yeah right but I agree with you. This is like after after the game where he scored a couple of games ago at home use. Oh what a move by to fully and I said great move. I just WanNa see it more often. Let's see him do it again right. So that's what I want to see from to fully on a regular basis but a great game by tonight. Yeah Sarah you happy be with season's over I mean he. He bounced back from the whole getting scratched thing and he had a good performance. But you know like you said I'd like to see him do it more consistently and put together more than just one game of looking good and then two games being invisible. There appears to be a slow skate happening. No you don't want to know what's happening. I'll pull back the curtain here. There is this is a true story. I'm not making this up. It's not a joke. Comedy's sake there is a yoga session going on at Staples Center right. Now they're really yoga center ice and they're going to be doing yoga momentarily. Is this yoga. Music Story yes down right all right so tired. Foley has himself a good night. I mean it was really hard to identify anybody that had a quote unquote bad night Johnny quick the office continues. His strong looks good. Looks Great I mean. It wasn't a shutout. Connor David scored. But I thought you said it was but other than that well it was. I mean. Shut up Ben Hutton. could have been stronger on that part but at the same time. It's connery David and I'm certainly not going to blame quick. It's five one game. You think todd McLellan that money on the board for this one for something on the board. I should say money I mean getting out of that Elevator Brown toured. I mean I think he wanted to win investment I'm GONNA reverse myself that Wagner Cambay lozad line. I mean they look great tonight. They didn't score though there are at least I don't know half a dozen chances again though but it goes back to the tyler. Toffoli thing is yeah. They can look great rate but he's got to keep doing that. And and for the sake of this argument they have to keep doing that but it doesn't matter if they don't score I agree with you. The reason I'm changing courses that it occurred to me that Kemp as been on wing for what three four games now. Your sat out Saturday's scratch straight into way in Thursday's in Saturday's today's loss on Monday. And then tonight so it's been four games and I. I have a tendency to forget this kemp as only what twenty two twenty three and I get it there guys younger than him. Putting up you know eighty ninety one hundred diseases I got it. But but Wagner is the second year Lozada Rookie in campaign is what third or fourth season. I mean I'm willing to give it. I put this out on twitter. I'm willing to give it fifteen games. Just because that's what you give the team at the beginning getting the season you say okay we have to evaluate then after fifteen games will reevaluate so this is a new line. It looks great. You know I it does need. Just it's like if after ten games of this and we're halfway there. They haven't scored a single goal. Then then yes everything I've been saying for the last two or three games. I'm back on that bandwagon. It's like okay. It looks great but who cares Sarah did you I mean where do you come down. And we know where Dave and Jack Fall on the spectrum. Where do you come down? The notion of the team has to be faster quicker younger etcetera. Yeah I mean I think that that's that's where they need to go in the also need to when when we talk about speed. It's not just how fast you physically move your body. It's how fast are you playing the game. How fast you getting your position? It's not just you know Asta Wagner going zero to sixty And it's about thinking it's about where you're stickers positioned and I think that's kind of the level of finish of the detail that is still kind of lacking in some of that is just inexperience of young guys still learning to to take their game to this level. But you know they'll get their. Hopefully I hope so. I mean in Wagner's defense. I see him trying more side to side movement at the end of the breakaway. Yes yeah and I was. I was at I went to morning skate. This morning to watch the kings and at the end of practice Wagner stayed out with Bill Bill Ranford and they were working on They spent a whole ton of time working on his approach to the nets and driving. Hard to the net and evading a defender her and talking a lot about shoot cutting down shooting angles and really helping Wagner learned to pick his pick his spot and it seems like you know watching that maybe they're I think the problem is not that he has bad aim but the problem is he's not he's just taking uh shot and he's not taking the best shot and so that was really interesting to kind of get a glimpse into that out of them spending a lot of dedicated time with him you know and they were talking about breaking down goals. He scored in the past. And like. Here's how you did it do that again. And so you know. I think he'll get there but you know you'd like it happen sooner rather than later. We'll hear me out on this. There's a lot of similarity there's there are quite a few similarities between the way mcdavid plays and the way that Wagner place fast. Yes but that's exactly what he should be taking into consideration is okay so you know. I mean granted. He is probably watching a guy who's younger than do what he wants to do. But we didn't see a great showing mcdavid today but at the same in time. I think there's a lot that he can learn from the way mcdavid plays on how those angles are. 'cause mcdavid is better than anyone in the NHL. Shell of cutting down angles and making himself able to get the puck on his stick but in an area where he can produce. And that's where we've Seen Austin Wagner. You're not so that not necessarily fail. But he hasn't been able to bring it to the exact position that he wants or the best opportunity on his stick. Yeah so I think I it's. It's it's interesting because you know we saw team with the Kings win who had wagner and we saw team losing David but with what mcdavid his goal scoring which is something that very few you players in the NFL can but at the same time. Same time is it. What he did do was he brought it to his forehand and still went short side which is something that we we haven't seen wagner do in any of the opportunities that he has had that look a lot like what connor mcdavid does when he does score? Let's talk about a line that did score. And that is the Andrzej culprits are line. Big blast from Andrzej culprits. Are Dave I mean for good that co Petar is I mean. He's obviously the best around. The team is challenging his own record From a few seasons ago for points but I mean how long have we been saying and and I don't mean you and I mean everybody involved with the Kings has been saying he's gotTa shoot more. Have you ever seen him. Blast a shot like that was great. I'm not sure I've ever seen loved it just wasn't living one timer. The puck Lang ripped it. I don't think he's had that opportunity though up like that for them. They built point of. I've been like you. You know. Obviously many many times up in the press box..

"Offs that some of the teams around them. Jeff is don't have few things conspiring against the Edmonton Oilers. One of them is the Pacific all of a sudden is getting real good at the top. Right. So we're looking at best case, of course, wild card for the Oilers, but all of Calgary's been hot Vegas might be the hottest team in the NHL the best team playing right now, San Jose Sharks. Have been dismantling teams on the regular. We'll talk with Erik Carlsson logo later on the podcast. So that's all conspiring against Edmonton. And again, I mentioned off the top of was conspiring about them compounding all of this. I would imagine weighing heavy on the psyche of the Oilers an oil fans Calgary's, really good. Calgary's a really really good team. And it's tough to watch your provincial rival thrive like this. When you have the best player in the NHL. And you can't get it in the right gear. I would say that is a factor. But to me the frustration build up has been coming along time for that. I mean, that's just probably for their fans and added kick in the teeth. But I don't know if that's as big a factor, maybe internally or even on social media than than some of the other things like I said earlier, Jeff you think they were fifty points out of the playoffs. And they're they're right. Their social media. I think is I always am careful about how much weight to put into it. What percentage of the public has a Twitter account? It's like twenty twenty percent of the people have a Twitter account. And I think Twitter has certain leanings. Both politically in terms of who uses it. But if you thought that everybody had a Twitter account, you would think that there would be riots in the streets of and right now. And there is there's no question that there's a lack of consumer confidence in what the orders are doing. Right and Kenya. Scott got in there, and you breathe a little bit of life into the team. He got them going. He's still has them in the race. Even though it sure looks like a Mirage. I just see a fan base that has no belief in what the organization is going to do. What's the saying? If you start listening to your fans who never them. Yeah. So I do understand that felt bad for last night. Even though he finally scored Lucia I just hope that he's not on social media. And if he has a hope he wasn't reading it last night. It's supposed to be going on out there finally scores in North America. Scored the goal in the preseason overseas. Finding scores our goal, and it is just that's the excuse to get this thick out for the pinata. And it was have a go at Milan Luchik. And if you can religious, you know, exactly what he said Africa scored the goal and getting back to the bench and all the afterwards was him getting starched on Twitter. That's this team. That's been false started outside of the stretch. When Hitchcock I took over so many different times this year when you have a team that gets false started like that. Maybe you shouldn't be surprised at that reaction. It is the paper anniversary so read the piece of paper up to GMC terrain, by the way, you mentioned I hope cheese on social media. Yeah. I hope is family. Im- isn't telling him what is said on social media because that's the worst. I always tell relatives and friends don't tell people what set about the Monte or social media because you always make it worse..

"And the thing is I started to figure out is there other ways I could do it says start using the team names. I do it as a jumble. Remember the old guy? I I had the jumbles my dad loved those skit there's lots to play. It's a blank canvas blank. Campbell's Habla Raza. I believe is how they refer to it. So good for you committed to its right off the bat before we get into the into the podcast. We have a lot of really good ask through, by the way. Like, she's pretty smart. I don't know her at all by she's got a pretty bright future. Like, I say don't know or at all I'm a little bit familiar with her work. But people tell me, she's she's very bright future. You know, you're good. When you vanish. Yes. She's an expert person that might show for the eagles vanish from hockey Twitter. I'm a big believer in the right? People are always watching. And I think they've been watching her who's been watching the Edmonton Oilers everybody a lot of our ask thirty ones and can't get to all of them. But a lot of them evolve around the Edmonton Oilers and what to do with the team. What's happening with the general manager? How you feeling if you're Connor mcdavid what's happening with Edmonson right now as record this podcast. They just got stomped seven to by the San Jose Sharks after walking into Anaheim and winning four nothing after getting curbs not the night before against the Los Angeles Kings. California's been an interesting trip again for Edmonton. And they'd beat Arizona to which was a game. They have to have this is their year. Jeff there's six of the next seven or at home and the only road game. I believe is Vancouver. And of the seven teams, they're playing the only ones that currently stand a playoff position or buffalo and Calgary they have to make their move here. You think they were fifty points out the way people are talking about them. They're two points out. But what's going on? Edmonton says to me that this is an organization saying for lots of different reasons missing the playoffs are not an option. Sometimes you see. Team lurching the way they are an organization will say this is not our year, and we're not going to waste assets or warrior but assets to try just get get in. That's not what's going. I Admiral tin, and I think there's two reasons number one. They've got luxury suites and stuff that are up. Some of them were on a three year term this is year three. So I think there's that that organization understood what a playoff run could do for them financially when they were there two years ago, and they went seven games with Anaheim in the second round. I think you get a bit seduced by that. But between that and the sweets. I think there's that and number two jobs are on the line. And anytime jobs are on the line people do things that they wouldn't normally do so between those two forces. There is an added level of importance to make the play..
