"Bird. Talk on seven ten cain. Us nine ninety k. Or cast brought to you by wild birds unlimited stores in denver and arvada and we had a few facebook live questions. One barbara says is it bad to feed squirrels. Some neighbors don't like them much. Well that's true. In a lot of it was squirrels his attitude. We'd have people coming into the stores. All the way from the ones that want to figure out what the best recipe for squirrel stew might be and also people that want. That'll say how do i keep the jays out of my squirrel feeder. I like to feed birds and squirrels. But i like to say. Don't bother each other so i use squirrel proof feeders and then i use a squirrel feeder yard and i can watch. The antics of the squirrels. And i can also watch the birds that can feed without being bothered by squirrels. I've had neighbors complain about squirrels and even bird feeding and Usually what i do. Is i tell them you know what. I don't like the color of your car. If you don't mind getting that painted for me and i'll pick the color then we can all get along and i'll stop bird feeding if you want. I really liked polka dots. But i think we gotta live and let live. It's fortunate that that neighbors have to not be good neighbors. Understand if they have like a soft at that they haven't taken care of and it's broken down and they get squirrels in the ad that do some damage. You can understand. But i find if you take care of your squirrels. You feed them. They're less likely to do some damage as other than maybe tearing up your lawn furniture because of trying to make an aso you nest material now another question. Bonnie says this week i observed to grapples wait patiently for colored To finish at the platform fear as soon as dove was done. The greco's took over. Everyone was getting along nice. That's good why can't we all just get along crackles. Yeah and nikki. Fuller's up she says crackles to and i think they are beautiful in my yard. They get along as well with. That's good now sometimes. Greco's can cause some problems and we do have solutions at wild birds unlimited. So i even did my ogden nash. Crack poem last week. So you don't have to do that for another it's an oil ethological tobacco it is. That's the thing we we. We tend to subjectively determine whether birds are good or bad. And i i like all of them. I mean i'm really not a bird biggest in any way. I like the birds. I like the squirrels. But i do set up my yard so that that they feed where i want him defeat. So don't take over my little bird. Feeders they have their feet nectar feeders. My fruit feeders. My sewage feeders. And i can get quite a good variety of birds in the yard at one time because we have thoughtfully set up our backyard feeding habitat. And it's easy to do. And that's what wild birds unlimited certified bird feeding specialists are here to do. They're here to help you set it up just the way you want it so if you don't like crackles and starlings we can help you get them off your feeders and but if you like all the birds we can even help you feed them where you want them to eat so we can overcome any challenge. So that's what we're here for. Another thing are certified bird. Feeding specialists are good at is helping you pick out a father state president. You haven't done that yet. Or maybe you really love dead and you want to add an extra president. Yeah exactly and there's a lot. I think i think you know you. I hope i don't get more than i deserve. But i usually do Kathy asked me if i would stop by my father's day present on the way home because she knows what she wants to get another very very small sports car. No no. I just hope when i stop and buy it. I don't buy myself more than i deserve on the way home. I i could. They'll so you're getting a single. I fiscus well. that's nice but i'm looking at whimsical t-shirts here. Yeah we got funny. T. shirts we have beautiful a native american hand-carved flutes which are easy to play play. So that's kind of nice but we have a binoculars and spotting scopes new tripod and well we of course have tripods for spotting scopes and some are more sophisticated than others but we have Nature related art and gift items. Gosh we've got mugs and jewellery if your dad likes jewellery. Hot and sunny now got caps and hats things to keep the sun off exactly. Yeah yeah lots of fun. Things bird feeders. Yes yeah bird. And bird feeders. Your dad's kind of been stuck in the past and he's been gone out there and he's white shorts and sandals bermudas and hawaii sadder and going out there and and putting in the king super mix macking supers necessarily big box store mix that doesn't attract so many birds and you might turn onto the real world of birds in colorado by putting out a blend that's going to attract a wonderful variety of birds and he's not going to have to clean up after they eat everything that's in the feeder. No shells. nothing like that so you can bring him into the of the future pretty soon. he'll be tattooed and have his doing all that stuff. No y'all breaking into the twenty first century sakes and now acts. Let's so twentieth century. Well it is mid to his Bermuda's but anyway We've got If you'd like to join us three zero three six nine six thousand nine hundred seventy one. We have another question on facebook. Live and if you wanna join us on facebook like you can go to bird talk guys dot com and right there you can link into facebook live at the stores and be able to watch us or you can even watch it after the show. There's also the link to the podcasts. We've got podcast going back ten years. I think that's pretty cool. Yeah but Lind is asking online. How do i clean my tube feeders. Good question the best way to do it. I think is as you get up five. Gallon bucket fill it with hot soapy water coach. Empty out all the junk in the to feeder. And then you just drop it in there and let it sit in there for ten minutes or so and that's just going to get everything nicely loosened up than we do. Have bird feeder brushes. That are as long as thirty six inches. That can just go right down that tube. They're kind of like a bottle brush but they're just a lot longer and they can get in there and scrub the inside really well. You can even put a little bleach in there. If you think it needs a little disinfecting and then make sure that when you're done you rinse it. Well let everything dry out really well and then put some seed in it and put it back out there. But that's a great question and bird..

"They left the role of santa in good hands however they chose a man who devoted his entire life to giving in nineteen twelve author. Sarah addington published a book about him called. The boy lived in pudding lane. You can see in his story that he was born to be santa. Starting in bucks male in the parish of wolford is worthy on the coast of devon in england with the baker and his wife nellie and their five sons they were the most popular bakery in town primarily because their eldest son gave away all the best pastries and treats kicked oh puppies or gingerbread to the kids in the neighborhood despite that the baker it always said business was good. Incidentally they would regularly praise richard cole their parliamentarian for making sure the parish was run. Well that same. Richard cole would one day become enshrined in the poem. Old king cole. One day their oldest son overheard his dad. The baker say business would be great if the sun giving away all the treats to the neighborhood kids. There was the first time he understood that his giving came with a price so that night he had an idea in the back yard near the shed was a pile of old sticks and kindling an extra wide pieces. He didn't think using them would hurt anyone and cleaning up the area would be great so he spent the next few weeks wiling away his time in the woodshed using the wood scraps to make toys for his brothers since his brothers were overly curious. He decided to hide his toys in a box on the roof the night before christmas. No one could find their eldest son. They looked everywhere with all the neighbors helping up and down the streets of town but being so cold out. They reconvened at the baker's house in hopes of starting a fire in the fireplace before going back out just then they heard a rustle in the chimney and lo and behold they began to see the boots of their eldest son. Slide down into the fireplace. He was dressed all in red and his box of toys after he gave his brothers the toys and saw the looks on their faces. He knew he would forever be making toys for them and when the neighbors added their praise for such wonderful presence and wishes that their kids would have had some like it. He vowed to spend all year making toys for all the kids in town. It was a dream come true. When as an adult klaus showed up to talk to him about becoming santa christmas had been banned where he lived and he feared he and his wife would not be able to give toys to kids anymore. Classes arrival meant. He didn't have to face the heartbreak of a band christmas. He could continue making toys and gifts for all the other children of the world and for the next forty years. The new santa and mrs claus did their best to make children smile wherever they could england. America and scotland had all band. Christmas was tough years for the spirit of saint nicholas pulitzer prize winning author. Phyllis mcginley documented one of the events during that tough period in santa story in her book the year without a santa claus. She noted that one year santa had caught a cold just before. Christmas and his doctor told him that he should probably rest this year with a few more places. Banning christmas santa was in a miserly mood pondering. Who cares anymore. Anyway author ogden. Nash famously wrote another poem about his crankiness that year. In the boy who laughed at santa claus he reporting that santa turned snotty young job as dawes into a jack in the box and dropped him off at the island of misfit toys. But you can't believe everything you read. Of course mrs claus in the elves took exception at santa's miserliness. They knew he'd be letting down most of the kids of the world if he missed christmas. So mrs claus in the elves jingle and jangle devised a plan jingle jangle we're going to take vixen and find proof that the world was still excited about santa coming. They were going to bring it back. To sent to reinvigorate his spirit. Bad weather caused three to land in a place called south town place. So far south it streets were lined with palm trees walking around town. They started to realize that. No one in town believed in santa or the christmas spirit. Were still when a policeman saw vixen. Off its leash. He took him to the pound. He didn't believe jinguan jangle that vixen was one of santa's reindeer but told them they were welcome to plead their case directly to the mayor. The mayor was indignant. He hadn't ever been visited by santa claus and didn't believe jingle jangle story but he did have the spirit of saint nicholas in his heart instead of asking for money or something to spring vixen. The only thing the mayor wanted was for it to snow on christmas day in south it never snowed and he wanted his town to experience the christmas they only heard about. He said if they could make that happen he'd release vixen. When jingle jangle reported that to mrs claus she smiled. She wanted that for the people of south town as well with help of a little magic santa. Mrs claus were delighted to help the mayor to deliver a wonderful snowy christmas. Their santa was extremely proud of the three and thankful for their help and saving christmas. One of the joys jingle and jangle received from their time in south town was learning about cocoa or hot chocolate it was quite prevalent in south town and the elves opinion should have kept them. Happy all year. Santa was intrigued by the south town. Experience palm trees no snow and cocoa. He really wanted to understand different cultures. Better as e hoffman mentioned in his nutcracker story. Cinta ask them to start by gathering chocolates from spain and brussels chestnuts from france web kucan from germany coffee from arabia. Tea from china and sugar plums from italy. While gathering kucan germany. The elves came across another great treat in cologne in sixteen seventy their church. The tolls church in the world with its double spires was preparing for the upcoming christmas eve. Service the choirmaster was thinking of ways to help. Keep the children entertained. During the long service he had an idea. Candy sticks but candy was frowned upon during church so he had the candy store owner bend a little hook at the top a crook to make them look like the staff's shepherds carry and the kids service was a success. The kids loved these candy. Canes and soon after so did the world and then in sixteen eighty one. Christmas was reinstated in england. Santa and mrs claus were so excited that lit the fire in them that one day they could go back. Forty more years of being santa and mrs claus. They decided to retire back to bucks mill and hand over the spirit of saint nicholas to another after that the seventeen hundreds were all about the world getting reintroduced to the season of giving jonas hanway. The second unmarried center had taken over the role he had been a prominent philanthropist in london before being called to the north pole santa thought he'd be perfect for the role not only had. He founded two hospitals in an organization to help raise funds for young men in the navy. The also fought for the rights of orphans and for the rights of real wages for chimney sweeps after he took on the robo santa the oath told him he was obviously born to be santa because he spent his life fighting.

"Joe the patriot mobile poet of the week is he is every week last week. I chided him that he needed to be happier and more big. Tarzana Joe are you happier and more upbeat? I'm still serious. But hopefully. Yes. The first debates over who will make the second round the air is full of outrage. There are gauntlets on the ground. They made a score of promises and lift them up in neon. Minor are there differences. But one thing they agree on the man. They hate daily in the nation's houses resident he made them. See what they did not win. Your Barack was president as a leader as he was as woke as we were in the country, wasn't great at, also can't be great, again, the triumph of ObamaCare with all this hype and buzz. They now can see how adequate it was. And when he said he'd slow the growth of college costs by half limited ambition, my Lord, it is to laugh, remember when he gave a speech in some guy, shouted liar, he thought the tax rates then were fine. But these guys want them higher. And as the race moves forward and these things get debated. It's clear that this group is so. Okay. They're super caffeinated politicians. Or you can call them hacks, but judge them by their work. The message that they're sending isn't what they think at all. Trump is not diminished. It's Obama who looks small that promises promises by Tarzana Joe did, I? Me up and I'm now woke and I'm wondering what in the world are you gonna do for a woke encore? I'm sure the game will you know the gang's all here, but it won't be the next time. So we'd be able to focus a little more tightly though. I like the woke stuff very well done Joe. Keep calling we still have a few seconds left of our challenge grant. It just takes a couple of minutes. And we'd love to hear from you this morning. What we'd also love to hear about well kind of. There's a report of a crash in the left lane and another crash might be down the road. In Berkeley on eighty westbound at Ashby. Eastbound at eighth street in sonoma's, because of a big re crash. Joe McConnell for kqed. And that report brought to you by peninsula del Rey senior living Michael Ellis. He has the background on a bird with distinctive method of feeding itself that is making its annual visit here on its way north. Here's this perspective. A wonderful bird is the pelican his mouth can hold more than his belly. Can he can hold in his beak food for a week? I'm Dan to know how the hell he can. And by the way, this point is by Dixon. Lanier Merritt, not Ogden Nash as usually assumed Brown. Pelicans are just now beginning to show up along the coast flying north from the breeding grounds and Baja. So food for. A week. Can they the pelicans pouch more properly, the Guler sack has many different functions? The first and most.

"With joe get a little bit heavier highway four westbound bay point is our newest and one of the few crashes we have and it's just a the drivers are out there exchanging information south eight eighty at mission the might be some debris in the right lane and southbound to thirty eight at eighty dollars to working on a down there and possible medical emergency joe mcconnell for kqed thank you joe that report brought to you by compassion international michael ellis has the background on a bird today with a distinctive method of feeding itself that is making its annual visit here on its way north here's his perspective a wonderful bird is the pelican his mouth can hold more than his belly can he can hold him his beacon food for a week i'm dan defy know how the hell can and by the way this point is by dixon lanier merritt not ogden nash as usually assumed brown pelicans are just now beginning to show up along the coast flying north from the breeding grounds Baja so food for a week can they the pelicans pouch more properly, the Guler sack has many different functions? The first and most obvious is to procure food, the Brown, pelican, hunts by plunging into a school of fish from a few dozen feet in the air. The greatly distended -able sack opens upon impact, and about two and a half gallons of water and any fish nearby are immediately sucked in the bird closes its beak hanging its head down and letting the water drain out the sides, and then flips the beak up and swallows the fish and apparently the birds be can hold three times as much as it stomach. But I doubt if that one gulp will ask that for a week nesting, pelicans, also carry partially digested fish in their pouch to feed their young and finally pelicans like all birds can't sweat. But dissipate, heat by rapidly vibrating their throat sacs, this is called Guler fluttering the other species pelicans, we regularly see in the bay area's the American white pelican. But unlike the Br. brown these fish by floating along the surface often in formation and scooping small fish out of the water with their beaks and into their large guler sacks the brown pelican used to nest abundantly in california but due to eggshell thinning d._t. and the collapse of sardine populations they now mostly breed in baja california though small breeding colonies have appeared in the channel islands the federal government removed the brown pelican from the endangered species act so it looks like we'll get to watch those wonderful burge with their.
