"Or stop to aid a driver and an accident. It's not happening. It's not going to happen. What about the move over law? All right. So what is the move over law? The move over law. I think it's a it's a couple of years old. If you're let's say you're in the right lane. And there's somebody stopped on the side of the road. You are to move over to the middle lane. You're supposed to move over one full lane. If you can and if you cannot you are supposed to slow down not slam on the brakes, but assuming you're paying attention. You should slow down. Let's see you're going seventy maybe you slow down to thirty or forty. No, no, no. I think that's dangerous. I wouldn't slow down to thirty on the highway not not in seconds. But I would slow way down way down Winslow to thirty. I just you know, you can slow down. But you still got you still got to go at least at least fifty five. I would I would slow way down. If you can if you have the space and the time I would slow way down. I don't think the move over law would have saved either officer Clayton. Townsend was killed by a man who swerved over two lanes because he wasn't paying attention. Texting was distracted in the officer Rutherford's case. That wouldn't that wouldn't have saved him either. That wouldn't have saved a meter trying to cross the road. Right, right. And I will tell you. I like the move over law a lot of other states have it. I try and do it as much as I can if I see a car on the side of the road. I will move over. Sometimes I have not been able to and I don't sweat that. I don't try and get over if I can't if I can't get over. I'm staying in that right lane. But if I move to the middle, I gotta tell you. I don't see a lot of people use the move over law. I don't see. I don't see anybody. Not anybody. I mean, that's kind of a blanket statement. But I would say most people that I that. I when I'm driving. They don't move over people drive, very selfishly. And that's not just a valley problem. Well, I don't even know if some people know about this law. No. But I I don't I don't even just mean the move over law. I mean driving in general doesn't everybody drives selfishly? Yeah. It's a countrywide problem where people are buried in their phone or they're talking on the phone or they're just kind of half paying attention. They want to get from point a to point b but they don't really pay attention to what they're doing. And if there's an accident, they look for any reason that it's not their fault. It's sad. It's fatal the only way it's going to get better is if these self driving cars take over the world, and then we can do whatever we want in the in the car on her phone taken nap, look at Facebook, do whatever and have the car drive itself. But.

"By Schwartz laser eye center. Honestly, I struggled a little bit to come up with the proper topic for a sharper point commentary today to talk more about Salt River police officer Clayton Townsend who's being laid to rest today about how he was killed in the most senseless way possible not by someone who was committing a violent felony. But instead someone who wasn't paying attention to the road. Do I talk more about the hacienda healthcare story? Everybody seems to have weighed in at this point, including former county attorney Rick Romley who's been hired by hacienda to investigate itself, and how on essentially comatose woman became pregnant while under their care. Yeah. Both of those are terrible stories that affect us emotionally. But and national story that may start affecting all of us financially is what I've decided to talk about the gosh darn shutdown. A New York Times opinion piece by political activist and a former labor organizer at me. Unbelievably shaking, my head up and down like well, do you? Remember, those toy Chihuahua? They used to have in the back window of the car. I'm shaking my head. Yes. Like, one of those the crazy part is this editorial. Says the TSA workers should go on strike. I've never really been sympathetic to federal workers striking and I don't think I ever been sympathetic to TSA worker. So what gives well visit a to'real invoked the thirteenth amendment to the US constitution, which says that involuntary servitude. Essentially being forced to work for free is against the law. If it's against the law for federal workers to go on strike yet. They're expected to show up without being paid. Well, that's that's a conflict of law. And I think the constitution wins out over any federal statute. Besides if the TSA goes on strike and grinds are commercial airliner service to a complete stop. It just might get the two sides over this border wall debate to move a little closer to each other. I mean, honestly the longer the government is shut down the closer. We get to a security crisis as well. So would it be in the interests of the president to give in a little bit? Maybe only get four billion for a border wall as opposed to five and wouldn't it be in the best interests of the Democrats to omit? Yeah. They voted for a border wall a few years ago and are now being. L hypocritical about it because well, it's that guy Donald Trump who wants it. Now. It's time to compromise people. It's what Americans want, and it's what will keep Americans safe. And if it takes TSA workers going on strike to get them there. Guess I'm okay with it. KTAR news time has made eleven. Becky Phoenix police for the first time telling us they are still looking for a suspect in the sexual assault case, they have not yet dented anyone, but they do confirm. They have served warrants for records of the facility and have done buccal swaps for DNA samples. She was not in a position to give consent to any of this. He says the woman was assaulted at least ones is this at this point. They are looking for the public to help with any lead that they can to identify the suspect. They're not ruling out anyone outside of the facility either. Or any family members? We have learned police were alerted to the December twenty ninth incident for a call of a baby. "General those Stein had been overseeing special counsel Robert Muller's investigation into Russian meddling in the two thousand sixteen campaign. You're never more than fifteen minutes away. From today's top stories on the result is news station. KTAR news. Bruce St James and Pamela Hughes. So. Late last night. The one on one the loop one one near McDowell road, a Salt River police officer had a car pulled over on the side of the freeway when a forty year old man who admit to texting while driving crossed a two lanes of traffic to the right and struck the officer and the car he stopped his well killing killing the Salt River police officer last night. Officer Clayton towns and leaves behind both wife and a ten month old child all because somebody was on their phone. We have distracted driving laws in Arizona. There are in the state of Arizona. We do not have no texting while driving law cities. But Phoenix Tucson's the big cities do individual cities may, but we don't have one in the state of Arizona. Obviously brings up the discussion if we had a no texting while driving law. Does it fundamentally change behavior though? Pick up your phone when it vibrates if they pass a lot of Morrow saying you can't text while driving. Because look at your phone. And this is one of the questions that I've been asking myself the last month like right now, it's considered normal to pick up your phone while you're behind the wheel. I'm not saying good. No. I'm not saying healthy. I'm not saying safe. I'm seeing normal because everybody has done it. I mean, come on. I try to cut back as much as I do not do it. When my daughter's in the car. You have you have a boundary still? I mean that doesn't matter to the person in front of me when I'm by myself, if I were to back into them, you know, what I mean or Aram into them. It's just what am I teaching my daughter, and I have made a concerted effort to put it down more often. But it's still there. I admit it. It's still there it only, and let's just say this this man, the forty year old man who struck and killed officer towns last night. Maybe it's the first time he picked us up on up of these forty and I'm not a kid millennial. Taking a selfie while driving digital natives can't live without at four knows better. So my point is it only takes once you don't have to be doing it, man. I get you. I totally do do we need a texting while driving law in this state. We're one of only like two in the country, then doesn't at earlier in the program. We had Colonel Frank mill set on the director of DPS we talked to him a little bit about this. Because his troopers see this time, and here's karnal Franken to say so as a legislature comes into session, and they look at that. I'm sure that that will come up again. And we'll see if that law gets passed, but the distracted driving in the car, no matter Potanin, Lena device, or it's doing other things in the car is a huge problem on our highways. Huge pregnancy argument about it. John makes the the argument on the Twitter machine that Jim Sharpe. Made this morning was talking to him about it. A law that specifically texting while driving doesn't take into account all the other things that can distract you while you're behind the wheel. I mean, what.

"News. Officer Clayton was one of my most dedicated loyal and committed officers. Yeah. Is eight forty four and coming up at nine o'clock here on Arizona's on KTAR news. It's Bruce St James panel using you're going to talk about this officer who was killed. And now this guy was arrested for texting while driving hit the officer the suspect in this case, I don't know if that's the proper terminology. We know he's the one that was involving accident is alleged to have been texting while driving. Not impaired even heard any argument of impairment, but distracted. Yeah. And I said he was arrested for texting while driving, which is not a crime. He was not it's not a crime in the state of Arizona. It is in the city of Phoenix Tucson city of individual cities, do but we do not have a statewide law. But I come back to and and I'm not opposed to the idea. I get the sense of of a law against it. I just don't think it changes behavior. Jamie. You you the mention you know, who's going to be the first. Person that that that she tweeted is going to introduce a law, and this officer seem to ban texting. Speeding's against the law to. Yeah. But could this get it done? I mean, I I mean speaks against the law, and and nobody drives fifty five on the on the officers are able to enforce that law. If it's not a second. David Scott a secondary which the first primary offense secondary offense. Here's the problem. There is I am aware of this. I it drives me nuts. I see it. And you know, what when my phone vibrates or something and I'm driving down the road. We can look at it. It's pavlovian. Yeah. I wish I didn't. I I'm technically distracted while I grab it. Yup. I I think I'm in the vast majority people, and whether it's illegal or not is not going to stop me from reaching for the phone. Well, one of my arguments against anti texting and driving law is, you know, there are so many things that being a parent. I know this. There's so many things that can distract you behind the wheel. I mean, what are you gonna you gonna make a law for everything like, you know, no turning around and looking at the kids know eating the wheel, no shaving. Yeah. But this is not to but distract with it. I was driving down the fifty one I live right over here south on the fifty one a couple of weeks ago. And there is I won't say what department a law enforcement officer. And you know, the traffic block, you know, what I'm saying? They're the only one doing the the speed limit everybody. But I as I pulled up next to him. I I saw the officer looking down to his phone while he was driving. Yeah. Okay. I mean, there's no not angry at it. We all do it. Will they law fundamentally changed people from looking at their phone? Maybe it won't. But maybe it doesn't hurt. I know there's a there's the Salt River police department a law enforcement community and family screaming today because somebody could not look at their phone, right? And ended up killing a police off which is distracted driving which is against the law. Already. Understood in Arizona. Yeah. I dunno. I dunno. None of it solves anything. But maybe it might make some people feel a little bit better. If if this log it's finally pass. And like I said before I'm one of these people it's argued against it because there's so many distractions. But right distracted is you know, why you're distracted may not be the most important. All right. Bruce, St.
