"Season till he becomes a free agent. So I think they'll manipulate that They may do it without foam tube with Spencer Howard. It's only one start. In all likelihood, you're messing so You're definitely doing it. In that case, it's a question then of what you do with them, and I think you probably put him into the rotation. Whenever it is. You call him up. And then that gives you the flexibility of having or trying to vet of Alaska's whoever you want in the bullpen. And if Spencer Howard cliques at a decent level, I think you have to be realistic this season. But if you get really good seasons for Marinol on Zack Wheeler and something from Jake Area, I don't think your rotation is that that's me. The bullpen is really going to be the question the season before we get to the offense. One more thing on the rotation, bring up area there. What is his status at this point? I mean, he had the bone Spurs last year coming back in the last year. The deal. I guess a shortened season means you could get a little more production out of him because you know him holding up over 1 62 obviously wasn't able to do that last year. What's Jake Marietta status in this pool? Yeah, As far as we know right now, Jake area is perfectly healthy and back from the bone Spurs thing. I think it's less about that and more about does he stay health because he hasn't done that over the course of the last two years. And even if he is healthy, what is he? At this stage? I think what we've seen over the last few years is this is someone that pitched in the Li long enough that he'll have a few starts where he could go seven or eight innings in a season because he's a smart, savvy veteran pitcher. But he's not someone that misses bats like he did when he was in Chicago and that that's really hurt in the last two seasons, so I think you probably need Spencer Howard to be your number three starter this year, and that's probably an unrealistic ass. Yeah, an offensively one of the big changes for every team in the National League. The fact that the designated hitter Now coming to the National League, at least for this season and will see beyond that. What Joe Girardi have to say about his plans with the D H this year. You him and Matt contact. They both mentioned Jay Bruce is the guy that will probably get the first look there, but they also were important to mention they're not really gonna have a d h. They're goingto have Jay Bruce maybe gets the most at that. There. But they both mentioned specifically Andrew McCutchen, Real Muto and Bryce Harper is guys that in a season where to Sprint and there's not a lot off days, especially in the case of real Muto, who wore down a little bit of the end of the season last year, and Andrew McCutchen was coming back from a torn a C l but also your leadoff hitter. I think in both those cases you're going to see them there. Reese Hoskins. I mean, you could certainly see him there. I know GT Real Nero doesn't like th So maybe all days where real Muto plays first base and Reese Hoskins the ages. To me, though, your best th option is out foam. So you figure out what you're gonna do there. Maybe you play him at third. But then you have the Move Gene Cigar to second base in Scott Kingery to Centre field, which probably would be actually be your best configuration. But I do think the Phillies would like to keep Scott Kingery at second base, if at all possible. So if you put Alex Bowman th you're able to do that, and you have a really good line up. I don't know if Alex Boom's gonna stick 1/3 base. My gut is probably not He can have it. Yeah, and is for Israel. Muto. You know, a lot was made of Macklin tax comments the other day about possibly extending in the landscape now changing due to the pandemic, you know, I look at it. I don't I don't think the Phillies have much of a choice, considering what they gave up to get, really Muto. Do you think they're going to find a way to get this done? Be it before this season or after this season? Yeah, I don't know if the audio ever made it out their ballistic. The mad contact didn't sound nearly as bad as reading that quote. And he's right. The Phillies probably do a more leverage now than they did in February or March. That doesn't mean they won't work out a fair five year deal, But it would be silly to bid against yourselves right now and offer six seasons for catcher. That's going to be 30 next season, especially if there's no one else out there that would be willing to do so. And theoretically, this offseason, we saw how billionaire owners of kind of pinch their pennies already. I don't think there's going to be a ton of teams lining up to sign big free agents of soft season so contacts correct in saying that the landscape has changed, but you're also right. I mean, a cz much as we all love Jason. Really Mu No, The village traded someone that could either be a number one starter, or ah, elite closer to a division rival to get him. Well, they don't exactly have the option of saying we'll let him go and find somebody else. Yeah, and one more for year 10 1 of the big stories. When this roster came out the other day, obviously, still guys they can add to it. But Odubel Herrera, not on that initial 60 ma'am roster, Would you say he's played? His last game is a filling. Yes, Macklin that left the door open the other day. I almost feel like he has to, And I mean, there just really isn't a question of whether he's one of the 53 best players on the in the organization as a baseball player. Of course he is, even if you integrate a lot of the fault that he had as a player, there's just This is someone capable of carrying an offense when he gets hot, so clearly to me. The Phillies had made the decision that they're not going to bring them back, but they can't release him because of grievance issues with the MLB, Papa. So essentially, they're going to be stuck paying them this year, paying them next year and then he has to other option years that they're going to have to buy out. So this may just be something we have to talk about once every few months when Matt Klentak Does these availabilities and yes to kind of go out there and do this song and dance about Odubel Herrera. But I would be pretty surprised if he's added to the 60 man pool. And even if he is out of the pool, I don't know that it really means that much. I don't think he's going to play another major league game for the Phillies. Tim, Thanks for hopping home of us. Tim kelly radio dot.

"Look, the fillies over under right now for the 60 game season is 31 a half, 31 a half. And I would argue, And really, I was just a question. The idea that Girardi's impact here is going to be significant because if the Phillies really were held back last year so much by the coaching and managing And you have a better coach and are better manager and better coaches here shouldn't be over under be higher than 31 a half. Something doesn't add up, but their playoff percentages did go up. According Fangraphs went from 18% of 30 right. That's because the short season that's because the variables of a short season. Nope, It's because the manager that's because there's everyone's playing. I don't know. I don't get how you don't see it like how do you not see that he's obviously Been underrated in in people excitement for this team like I think when it eventually got here, and he was signed, and everyone's like happy, But I think people have forgotten that Joe Girardi's imagine this baseball team. And I just think that when you're when you're going from, you know the country club that that that Gabe was running to an actual structured Clubhouse. The back that kind of thing elevates the level of accountability, professionalism in the locker room and just wasn't there less well, it will change the clubhouse will change. I just don't know how like how does that How much does that change the on field problem? Because there's a there's a different level of intensity. I understand, But how much will actually change like if you're more a lot? If you're more locked in in the clubhouse, you're more locked in with your teammates and No yakking laughed with the curve ball machine. And like you, you have a leader of men versus you know, Gabe, you know like that. That just changed the lock in more You can't think I feel it gave never had. The real control of that clubhouse. That won't happen any well, I mean, I did criticize gave the times for because he never seemed to have a sense of urgency. And when you know for that team, and I think the team took on that personally will have more of that. But I don't know of urgency makes Reese Hoskins less slum prone. I don't know. If urgency makes jeans, sugar go become a 3 10 hitter again versed to 80 and and not me. Not the guy they traded for. The corps is not going. I don't think so. George is going to do the stuff that he did last year with with with Gerard and injury is going to get a different level of Gene Secor, not saying is breaking down his swing, but he's going to get him to a lock in more and be more attentive and And hopefully you get the locked in Gene Secor that combat 3 10 again. I will be impressed if he gets that at a secure. You know why? Because Jean singer has been how many teams now five. Yeah. What reason? Yeah, different managers, a lot of different teams, and he still pulls the same shenanigans. If he could get security lock in. I will be impressed on Gene. You're like, 31 like Let's let's grow up. My isn't better shape. You look ripped jeans. Looks like he's ready to play. Well, third base. Let's talk to Jo, who was in Mollica. Hello? Hey, Joe. Hey, John, How are you? Great Shallot been a long couple of months. And this show is really got me through the day today. A couple things. 100% agree with you about your already having not as much impact as people think this year. Ah, 60 game, Steed and I must say I was not a Catholic I at all not nearly died by degrees necessary. I do feel this is more of an extended spring training this year for 60 games. It's not going to be a real season. I think it's more of an organizational Cultural change that we're gonna see this year and maybe see the benefit next year. Look and I don't feel his impact will be very great at all this year. Yeah, It's what you said there, Joe. I'm gonna give you a comparison. And it's one that I typically hate. But I think its applicability here, you know, I I never thought that the chip Kelly Gabe Kapler comparisons made any sense something they were totally different personalities. But I'll compare to this. Doug was a good fit. Doug was obviously a great hire for the Eagles. They didn't win. The Super Bowl is first year they didn't have a winning record his first year, they didn't go to the playoffs his first year. It did establish something, and then obviously the last three years, they've would've been one of the NFL's best teams. I think it could end up like that. I think we could see the Phillies not be great this year or even very good, But maybe Joe has a lot of success. Year 234 I think there's some similarities there. That's that's my stance as well before giving my mom I just wanted a pin is Odubel Herrera. Even in the picture at all this year, he might be your best center fielder. They're going to give him a chance at all. Is there a chance that you think so? I mean, the Phillies have not ruled it out. McClintock didn't rule it out. They didn't put him on this initial roster pool, so right now he's not going to be participating. From what I gather, Joe. My guess is it would take a significant amount of Illness means put it that way. Then they would need a gun and they have nine outfielders on this roster right now they would need A bunch of those guys to get covert. I mean, I think that was is the re away. He gets back here and if they do, and they're just short on outfielders, he's already in the organization. I think I think that would be the way he gets back your injury or or, you know, covert. I think that's the way he'd come back. Probably not, though. And I've been on the phone listening for a while. Thinking about my baseball moment have along this. I'm going to give you the one that I came up with a number one. Well earlier mentioned a hell of a no hitter, which was October 6th 2010. We had a row behind the dugout. It was my 14th birthday. On that day, so that's a pretty special moment in a lot of ways and Besides the actual no hitter, just the fan reaction. We signed a section with a lot of guys who we knew for years and You know how superstitious baseball fans are. There was a lot of things that We did, including no one allowed to go to the bathroom for the last three innings. We worked that well, Joe, it worked. I mean that. There you go. That's that's you know, that's why superstitions exist because once in a while they work you keep doing them. That was my number one. I have met many great moments. Baseball. My son's birthday. That was a big day. Yeah, that's special right there. Joe. We appreciate the phone call to 155 92 94 94 on your side, Your faux calls. Ah. And And look. "You can use the third baseman or doesn't need a hitter without who also come play first base. And you, could you sure hell need need? Ah, starting pitcher, So they're Spencer Howard. And the other point is that you're manipulating service on this extend their frequency. Get to the 2020 that they'd be six. They give six years starting this year if they come up, so that puts on the free agency after 2025 seasons. You manipulated their after 20 points 16 and that means that Clinton has been on the job for more than 10 years. If he if he's benefiting from that, I always haven't had general manager for more than 10 years, all alone. So You know, no matter what happens to Mack contact, he most likely will not be the journal manager anyway in six years. What if he is going to be paternal manner of six years? His best chance to do that? Is the Wynn to manipulate service time. So it's really a Macklin text best interest to put these guys on the roster. Make sure they win, and that's how you know he can protect his own job security. I don't think you should've protected by missing the playoffs this year, just because he's been exploited Service. Yeah, it's a good point at that mat benefits. Obviously Joe Girardi. If he thinks those guys already he's going, he's going to push them to be there because he benefits to it on a map to the Enquirer. Phillies summer camp starts later this week. Are, Matt. What do you think this is gonna look like? And I know we're all just guessing here. But I'm just trying to figure out how they're going to pull this off in terms of a summer camp. We've heard about their going half the players over FDR Park. I read one story. They're gonna have baby weight lifting on the concourse. Have you started to try to picture what This is gonna look like a spring train. They have so many fields. They could get so much done. And now they have to follow all these rules with all these players, basically in one stadium and in the park across the street. Yeah, they're goingto have practices in the morning and in the afternoon like so two at a time on one practice the ballpark, another practice at FDR going on in the morning in the afternoon. A different group comes in that half of that group goes to the ballpark after FDR. In the entire ball park is going to be free, right? Like there's kind of a weight lifting on the concourse. There's going to be guys in the bullpen, but their owner bullpens but separated by a bullpen mound like you know, if I'm on this bullpen, CNN people between us before you're thrown on the other one. It's just everything is going to be specially distance. You'll see non uniformed personnel where masks the players won't have mass on but I'm with everybody else will It's going to be weird. One of the things that you know you're going to need a lot of patients from the players because this is totally different from them. And I think really, everybody down there. Has is going into this with really. The only thing they know is the handbook from Major League Baseball and really, no other instructions. Everyone going in this You know, almost blind and rushed here here we are the first workout Friday and it's just I have no idea what it looks like. Yeah, it's like the blind leading the blind. The only thing they know is that they're going to place in baseball here. Hopefully on July 23rd for opening day, Matt last one for you yesterday. Matt Klentak did not close the door on Odubel Herrera and said he's still under consideration and they didn't take him on the 60. Which means you know he's not under extreme consideration. Always he'd be with the rest of this team right now. I meant I have said for a couple weeks now that this very strange year does open a door where they could. They could bring him back and my guest was before this whole thing that they didn't want to. They want him to just kind of stash away a triple A and eventually they move on. But at some point if he's under consideration, and they have some illness with an outfielder's, I think it would be very hard for them not to call him up. What do you think? On the whole double thing? I think most fans don't want to see him again. But again. We're not gonna have fans this year, so maybe that also would make it easier for them if they had, Teo To give a second chance. What do you think? I know doable. I still don't think so. And they they have a lot of outfielder. So it would take, you know pretty Wicked current virus outbreak if that was the only reason that they ran out of outfield depth. And that's why I had to come up. But There's gonna be no fans in the vault far, but there's going to be fans watching and there's going to be fans paying attention. We know what the last month did for the good will of baseball, so it's not like The Phillies are flying high right now in the city, and they can afford to throw double Herrera out there. You know, it's still a PR move to that point that that extent and then the other thing. What McClintock said yesterday is almost what he has to say, because Everything they do with him have be based on baseball reasons. Every transaction that made they have to go back up by baseball reasons. That's what their you know when they talk. They treat him in conversation as a baseball player, but The reason he's not on the 60 is because he was arrested in Atlantic City last summer. That's why, but they are able tto. Guy guys that as baseball reason, and that's what they comments were yesterday so they can defend that these decisions and stand behind it as baseball reasons. And then there are baseball reasons because The guy was not the all star that he was three years ago. He had totally different. He was a different player last season and the year before that. I mean, they have all the rights in the world and not have him on the roster for baseball. Really Well, yeah, he did. He regressed in a significant way of even before All the issues off the field man. I appreciate happen on good luck covering summer camp over the stadium and FDR Park and I'll be reading multiple chat soon. Thank you, Matt. Thanks a lot. I'm looking forward to their egos. Matt Breen of the inquire. They're talking to us about the Phillies about Realmuto some of that he that bring divisions a scenario where the Phillies allowed J T to walk into free agency. I think every day we get closer to that I've been saying this since March..

"I'm going to miss him on Monday night football Like nothing like, so forget about him. But all they talk about Cam Newton Cam Newton Kim on the Big story's former Gov. Palin gaze. Is it a big store? How much else is going on Howard and that's that's part of it. Well, you know Best was getting ready to play. I mean, it just There's different things that you Khun can't figure out what the problem is. People in this country don't care to talk about baseball that much. You know? Ah, ah, good thing and I had Larry Bo on on the show on Saturday. Talked about, you know, it's different now. Teams who may have been favored may not be favored because of ah, different aspects of the game. But whatever. Just talk about baseball, Okay because of a 60 game season, who is really The team that you think has an advantage with short season, but they don't but nobody cares about that. That's the problem. Nobody cares about baseball so but you you could talk about other things. I'm so tired about Cam Newton. Cam Newton is a team disruption. That's what he well now this is going to be interesting now because he's on the team now who doesn't know that they don't do that? If you disrupt any, they get rid of you. So Cam's going to have to change a little bit to fit in and we'll see what those aren't Howard last thing. I want to ask us. Oh, Cleantech yesterday was asked about Odubel Herrera, who was not put on the roster. They put out but they left spots open and I think all teams we're doing this so they can add players and they have some flexibility. But oh, double Clinton was asked the city if that means that the door shot and he he didn't sound like it was me the way it sounded to me yesterday. Was there still leaving the door open here? Throw double to be under consideration and this is the way I look at it, Howard in a normal year, I don't think that we would have seen him again. But if they have two or three or four outfielders, get sick or get injured. I think it's going to be hard for them not to bring him here because he's already on the roster. He's ready in the organization. All right. I'm going to straighten this out right now. When we see him again, No, no matter what, no matter what, unless you lose the whole team unless everybody has to be put in quarantine because they're all contaminated. Ah, which you know is not. I say that tongue in cheek and I hope that I hope there's not a lot of guys who have to be put in quarantine for any team, and certainly this team, but There is, um there is a pride that the organization has tohave. There is a pride that I know John Middleton does have There is no way that a guy that was found guilty of domestic assault or abuse or whatever that the exact charge was. There's no way you can put him back on the team. You can't Take away your moral fiber. To put a guy like that on the team. You just can't do it now, the thing that they can't say the way the rules are written in the players agreement. Is you can't get rid of a guy because of that. You have to get rid of a player because he's not good enough to make your team. And that's what they have to. They have to find a way to make that the case and I think our I agree with you, and I think that they were going to try to do that by him either not playing well in spring training this year, or if he went to Triple A. If that, you know if this year was normal, and he hit 200 triple A that they'd have it. They'd have their reason to just cut bait, but there's no minor league games. If he's not on this roster, he just hangs out at Lehigh all year in place Catch They're going to have no justification. Teo, get rid of him like they really can't do it. Based on what? We know what the rules are. They're kind of stuck with him right now. Well, you gotta have somebody else in the outfield. It's better. That's all. You have to have somebody else. It's better and you have to find it. And you have to give reasons why they're better. They the moral fiber of this team would be completely destroyed. If you brought that player back. You can not do it. I agree with you and I don't think they want to. It's just interesting to me that klentak kind of leaves the door open and well, he couldn't say anything. Remember, you can't say it. Can't say no. And then the player says it Well, Why not? Are you going to tell me that if the guys you have are going to be better than than he is so, But he was asked, Is he still under consideration? He could have said. We have our best nine AL fielders on the roster and we're excited to go left or open again. I think he's trying to play it just to get guys like you. It's just it's playing the game. He's playing the game. There's no way I would be. It would be a complete disgrace, a disgrace. If he's back on the team, and it just I don't need to see him anymore with, you know, flounder away and not knowing when to run and when not to run, not paying attention. You know all the things that he does. He's such an airhead. Ah, but he had skills, but I think the pitchers have figured him and why he got worse every season. It's on top of the real reason. He's not here as a player. He also eroded the last four years. Can't I don't think I don't think he'll be back. And I don't think you can bring him back. You can't do it. You cannot do it. I agree. I just wonder if they're caught between a rock and a hard place in the middle August and they have a bunch of guys sick and he's just there, Atlee, I if if they change their mind and let him stay under that rock You can hang out there. All right, Howard, I appreciate happen on and ah anymore. Walks tonight. What are we doing the rest tonight? You know what I think? Just actually it. Ah, right up against 12 miles, So I think I'm going to do about 2,503,000 more steps after I get something to eat. Sounds good. How will talk to him? All right. There he goes. Our safe. Everyone stay safe. There he is. Howard ask you to 1559 to 94 94..

"But one thing has changed your guys that that I think we all have taken account. This is not fault. The Phillies refused to pay the luxury captain issues. They didn't do it. Are they going to do that? Moving forward? If they are, then there's no excuse not to re signed J T. But if I'm that contact, and I have my boss saying, you only get 200 year to spend. I have to start thinking about how I'm spending that 200 million and if I'm wrapping up 100 million of that in five players next year between Wheeler and Harper and real move so in Segura, and because Jin It's not going to be very easy to build a World Series team with on Ly You know another 100 million left that that's part of it like if they don't go for the luxury tax Paying him whatever he wants, it becomes ridiculous. Well, it's fine. I'm glad, and you'll be your own tonight at seven. Right? You are six tonight. Yeah. Yeah, This is so it should be interesting. We've got to make sure you tune in tonight. Al Morgana. So, and other fillies matters they all received will receive if they haven't already Code 19 testing at camp. I can get underway as soon as Friday players. If the tests come back negative very soon. They can start workouts as soon as tomorrow. One player who was noticeably absent from the pool roster was Odubel Herrera. McLintock was asked about it yesterday and said he will be considered hey opted not to put him on there at the moment will be considered. Joe, Should we take klentak literally, or is he just being just being nice and saying we're moving on? No, I I would take him literally and I I thought there was a chance they would put him on. Yes or Sunday on the 60 player pool. I don't look, I don't think they want to bring him back. I think And it all is. In okay, world. They're not going to bring him back. But I was living in that kind of world right now. And if they have a series of injuries or unfortunately, outfielders gets sick. He's in the organization. He's had sickly experience. He was in also what? I don't see how they avoid using him. If they need to know. I guess we could all say Well, you just go make a trade. But I mean, if something happened, and they had no choice, and they were down players and down outfielders Yeah, I think he's come back. I mean, they can avoid this discussion for right now, but I don't think it's crazy that we see him this year. As long as he's still part of this organization. Joe Vegas has the Phillies as a 500 team. Are they correct? Now they're wrong, and they're a little bit better than that. I'd say, 31 32 hopefully 33. That's that's kind of the range. I see them. I think they're better than 500. And what would they be without volume? You do? Work. I just But my other question is just about the general manager. I understand the basics. But why would you answer a question like that, when all the fans want to hear is that he's really really want to sign him without bringing up landscape and I mean, it just doesn't sound good. And this is after a general manager that didn't sound good after the manager was Let go. What? Why does he not? Is he toned after Teo what people want to hear? Yes, I mean, I think it's past He doesn't care and half that he just doesn't get how the fans react here. It's amazing how he's been here. Now. What is this? You're sick five. Me? Yeah, And he's not like you knew. I mean, that's been around and he had every time he does stuff like this. I'm with you on this. There's no reason to talk like that, like I mean that there's ways that GM and figure out a way to talk around like you can't say we're gonna get what everyone to stay here forever, and that's a really stupid but what he said yesterday. I understand what people are annoyed and When he gets it from the guy above him. Any McPhail, I'm in this wall wasn't just about a year ago, a little more where if we don't we don't like this is they don't know how to talk. They make fans feel worse. Every time they talk over this final question I have for you, Joe. I'm not sure how often you drive by FDR Park, but sometime next week, there's a good chance. You look past a couple of runners, maybe see somebody walking their dog, and then you're going to see Phillies players using the baseball fields there. How wild is that? It's crazy. I wonder what I don't drive past there often, but now I'm going to just on purpose. But I wonder what players they're going to send, like, you know, there's enough players in the 60 man Ross. They're bringing her 50 whatever man roster. They're pretty anonymous that you know you and I probably wouldn't even recognize who it is from a distance. But then this bright Harper there's Jake area. There's Andrew McCutchen guys that you know, we could recognize it like, Oh, that I know that it is like that would cause the crowd. I wonder if they're gonna put the Star players in FDR parking up. And if they do that, that would just be amazing What his name is Joe Giulio al. He is the evening host here in 94 W If you make sure you tune in tonight at six as he will give an opposite viewpoint as from us on re signing J. T. Rowe Muto, Joe Appreciate it, man. Anytime. Guys see that out? Yeah, he hates sides with management thinks that salary cap is going to be a hard money is an issue. They call it a luxury tax. They can't touch the luxury tax well, but here's my counter argument if you were We looked at the star of the show. I talked about the moves he made this offseason in terms of addressing the pitching staff. He brought in Zach Wheeler, which is a good find, Um outside of that he did nothing. He re signed Tommy Hunter, who was injured and stunk before that, he did. Everything else was on a monitor league level. So if you're going to, you know, play the card of saving money for long term. Why didn't he used such money? To address pitching, which we're now that we know we're going to be 60 games. The bullpen is the most important staff on the team, and this is their biggest weakness. And I made I mean, they were so hammered with people getting hurt last year. I mean not. I don't know. I would bet them over. I actually would bet them over the 30 30.5 is what I get him over that. Just hit the ball enough, Andrew and have our town's on w IFE. Andrew Way lost and you're going to go to Johns on W it, John. Hi, j. T. Rowe! Muto. They've got to re sign him now, right? No, I agree..
