Seattle Children’s Knew for Years Security Was Called Disproportionately on Black Patients

"Seattle Children's Hospital are more than twice as likely. Have security called to their rooms. If they're black, it's a racial divide in the use of what Children's calls Code purple more from comas. Corwin take Seattle Children. Staff members invoke Code purple if they need a security guard to report to a patient's room in response to unsafe or threatening behavior, either by the patient or often by a parent. A Seattle Times investigation finds Code purple is invoked more than twice as often for black patients than for white patients. It's a form of institutional racism. That in part, led to the resignation of Dr Ben Danielson as medical director of the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic, part of the Seattle Children's System, Danielson tells KCTS Seattle Children's own assessment revealed the disparity a decade ago, finding that security was just proportionately called on families based on the color of their skin. 10 years ago and then sitting on that there's a tacit acceptance and since there's a complicity of like, Yeah, we know this and we're not gonna do anything about it. A Seattle Children's spokesperson acknowledges the issue. Telling the Times systemic and institutional racism exists across our healthcare system and Children's is not immune. The spokesperson ads The hospital's goal is to eliminate the code purple disparity altogether.

"The reserve supply of covert vaccines the government promised don't exist. I come before you extremely disappointed that we were lied to with plans of the administration to release reserve doses that were to be the second doses. Of the vaccine, Colorado's governor among those frustrated state leaders, who was banking on additional vials. ABC is Dave Packard, joining us on the co Moh news line. And Dave Talk about a big flip flop from the government. We'd heard at the start of the week from the health and Human Services secretary. That was a big don't hold back. Second doses announcement earlier. Yeah, like Cesar made it sound as though there were a significant number of doses that were on their way, he said. We're releasing the entire supply, which We have for you rather than holding second doses, of course, making that seem like there was a big second. Those supply as it turns out that apparently the bucket is empty. The these doses started going out in December as part of the regular amount of doses that were being sent out to the states. So leading the impression that they were going to be more doses going to the states. The states started saying, OK, we're gonna open up some restrictions on giving out these vaccinations. We're going to allow people who are seeing You're 65 older to get the vaccine. And now all of a sudden those vaccine doses just aren't there. How did they find out? What? What was the breakdown? Well, the breakdown was earlier this week on Tuesday. Alex Cesar makes it sound like these doses are. There's a great huge stockpile of doses that were being held for second doses for people after they got in their first dose, And they said, Okay, we're just gonna release them as first doses, And the idea was that they had a supply chain that was going to continue to produce doses at the pace that they would need them as As it turned out, that supply chain is not up to speed. So it's not even clear that Alex Cesar was aware that the supply was depleted when he made that promise. And then operation Warp speed had to come in today and kind of clarify and say no, those those doses started going out the end of December. There were people who legitimately were getting their second doses at that point, and that reserve was being used for that. And so as it is, right now, states are have ramped up their vaccine distribution efforts. And now they don't have the vaccine to back that up. And meanwhile, the number of covert cases in the U s Today is where we've gone over over 400,000 cases. It is just unprecedented. Obviously, you know, every day we break these records and We're almost getting numb to it. It's the worst crisis has been and with so much else going on on the news. It's something that sometimes we forget. We are in the depths of what is the worst pandemic this country has seen in 100 years and that covered 19 vary it that was first detected in the United Kingdom, Dave that's now in at least 10, U. S States. So what does this indicate for the pandemic? It certainly will change the trajectory of the pandemic because With this more contagious variant of the Corona virus. Even if you're putting out vaccinations at the pace, we're doing it. It's not going to keep up with how this new variant will will change the number of cases. It's not deadlier in any way. It doesn't change the results of an infection, but it's certainly more contagious. And one of the projections the CDC has today. Is that with this new variant now in 10, different U. S States that very Will overtake the current covert 19 virus in this country in terms of infections by March. So does that mean this thing just keeps on going and going? What it means is that it becomes more contagious. And it's evermore important for us to be using medication tactics like mask wearing and hand washing and social distance thing as much as it was before. Now, with a virus that's even more efficient at spreading itself. That becomes even more important. He sees Dave Packer. Thank you, Dave. Absolutely. "Me with this. Russell Wilson is a seven time pro bowler. He also has a Super Bowl champ. He has led the league and passer rating passing TDs. For all that he's accomplished. Not only has he never been a league MVP, he's never even received an MVP vote. What is your reaction to that? And how in the world you explain the fact that he's never even received a single MVP vote? It's unreal, man. I think I think it's unfair to write because I think a lot of people still think of Russell wasn't ah of early. You know, early in his career where I guess he wasn't the focal point of the of the team, right. You know he had. Fortunately for him, you know, he got he grew. He grew up around a bunch of guys that Lead the team for it, right. You know, you look at the defense from our Richard Sherman myself might be. I mean, the list is long and he didn't necessarily have to be that guy. So I think people are still kind of thinking about that. But if you look at his set Every single years. This man has gotten better. You know, every single year you've gotten better and he's he's waiting after he's only had 11 season where he's going. He's lost nine games. Everything else has been in place games, right? So I think people are kind of being biased little bit from from early on in his career, but he deserves to be in those talks. He's consistent. He's getting better. Even a year. Eight year nine. Usually people, you know they're just great. And and and they kind of, you know, Plateau a little bit. He's consistently getting better. That's another trick that a lot of I guess fans people don't don't put in tow consideration is consistency. This man's been consistent his whole career, you know, so on, and that's extremely hard thing to do in the NFL, and not only that, but in terms of approach that that's like the most important thing anyway, Right? That's the most important thing to say about anybody. Are they consistent in the way they go about their business the way they carry themselves? What about Chandler Jones? What do you think when you watch him on how he goes about his job? So underrated so so underrated, And I don't know if it's because of the team or what, but he's had double digit sex almost every single year for like the last six or seven years. You know patriots let him go and And you know it didn't make any sense, either. But, um, you know, I just think he's an amazing player. He's unorthodox. You know, I talked about von Miller's Get off. You know Chandler Jones. He did off is actually terrible, but he's so great with his hands. He's so great understanding what Officer Lyman they're going to do. He's so great at being ableto not hands down and been the corner. And you know he's he's so I think he's vastly underrated as Faras for the recognition that he deserved. You know, I hate both. My parents are Haitian. They both come from Haiti. They both are immigrants to the United States and One thing I've learned is no matter how bad you might feel your circumstances are you still have enough to be able to give back and I watched my mom and I watch my dad do the same thing and threw this pandemic through co bit, I think For me. It's so important for us to be able to give back to those. There's a lot of people hurting right now is a lot of people with no jobs. Lot of people don't have any income coming in, and I think if you have it and you can help, you should definitely do so and I think it's important. You know Chandler Jones. He get off is actually terrible, but he's so great with his hands. He's so great understanding what office in line they're going to do. He's so great at being ableto not hands down and been the corner. And you know he's he's so I think he's vastly underrated as Faras for the recognition that he deserved. It compares them to be on a pass rush in the league. Cliff April. My guest I mentioned I want to talk about your foundation before he left part of your transition from football to life After football has been the building on the community service that you always did is a player. This year, you partnered with safe way to help the Odessa Brown Children's clinic to address food insecurity and other issues brought on by Cove it. What has that experience been like for you? You know, I hate both. My parents are Haitian. They both come from Haiti. They both are immigrants to the United States and One thing I've learned is no matter how bad you might feel your circumstances are you still have enough to be able to give back and I watched my mom and I watch my dad do the same thing and threw this pandemic through coded. I think for me, it's so important for us to be able to give back to those. There's a lot of people hurting right now. A lot of people with no jobs. People don't have any income coming in, and I think if you have it and you can help, you should definitely do so. And I think it's important, especially for these kids. You know, That's one of the main reasons I partnered up with Safeway and doing some Kobe released up. Bloody kids offended on meals a school, You know a lot of kids. They weren't getting their meals because they weren't in school. And I think that's unfair. So the partners have only made sense to give back to the community and gave so much to me as well. That's 1%. True. That is some of the best parts of their day to be at school to get that meal. He's a Super Bowl champion. He's a Pro bowl or a 10 year. NFL vet. Obviously a great broadcaster and the founder of the Cliff Areal Family Foundation, My man so good to get caught up. I appreciate you, Cliff in the energy. Great to have you on the show.
