"All people have access to renewable energy, clean air and water and healthy food. On the Web at the Schmidt dot This's NPR. You're listening to bulls eye. I'm Jesse Thorn. If you're just joining us, our guest is the musician Laura Jane Grace. Laura fronts the punk band against me, but she also just released a solo record. It's called Stay alive. It's out. Now she's being interviewed by my pal Jordan Morris. Let's get back into it. The first time somebody played against me for for me. There was kind of Ah ah, a legend surrounding the album like I think the spiel I got was like you have to hear this band. It's just one person and they only play in laundromats on I just wanted to ask is, is that is that true? Was there a tie when you were just playing laundromats? And if not, if that's just a weird urban legend, Do you remember your first shows with against me? I will. We played one laundromat that started that that legend. Maybe we did play subsequent laundromats. But it was really this one legendary Laundromat show that that was all born from But you know, we really like we didn't fit in anywhere as a band, and so starting out in southwest Florida, As I said, we're at first there was no place to play. You know, we would busk on street corners or we would like You know, we got really into the activist scene and really into being part of food, not bombs. And what was called Fran, the Florida radical activist networks where a bunch of people who did for not moms and their different towns We've moved up once a month and talk about what we were doing, and then we'd organize things like youth liberation, confident conferences or made a gatherings. And so we'd like, go in camp in the middle of the Ocala National Forest for a week. And you know me and Kevin, who was the original drummer, and against me, he would bring his pickle buckets and I would bring my acoustic guitar. And I saw that is like the advantage to then of the acoustic guitars like we don't need amplifiers. If we if we can't have a venue to play it, let's just take that a step further and, like, disown it and be like, Well, we're not only are we not gonna want to play on a stage we're not even going to use amps and that'll like give us in a pen and independence and an ability to adapt where all these other bands that are existing in South Florida. Bemoaning the fact that they don't have a venue to play like we'll have an edge over them in this way. But there was AH record store in South Florida called higher learning. That was probably like our first place that we played the most shows that but it was all very just like the local friends. And then when we moved against will We really weren't accepted by the scene there at first at all, and the place that we played. That was the Civic Media Center, which was ah local nonprofit, volunteer run anti corporate press library and activist space. And so I started volunteering there and eventually, like they let me start booking shows they're even. But that was where against me would play all the time and we weren't accepted in the bar scene. We weren't even accepted in the House show scene in Gainesville, and it wasn't until a number of years later, when we put out a record with no idea records with which was like the local label of lore. That that that happened. But our first our first tours were all you know, self booked, specifically leaning on a resource called book Your Own Life, Which was this scene that just had like A list of phone numbers and a list of addresses for houses or basements or show spaces across America, and I would call them up or write them a letter and send them a tape and be like, can we play? And so we did two tours like that, where it was, like months long tours. That, you know, starting out Go on the road, and there's 30 shows booked, but at the end of it, we've maybe played a dozen each time and you know, we played anywhere anywhere. I would have us You Your first few albums you mentioned came out on indie labels. You mentioned no idea records and you made a few for fat records. But then you made a couple of albums with Butch Vig who produced Nirvana's Nevermind. What does someone with that kind of experience bring to the table and did and did making records with him Feel More big time in a way that the other records didn't We got really, really, really lucky with working with Butch for a number of reasons, and you know, we the record we made prior to new wave, which was our first record with which we made with J. Robbins, who is a great producer in his own right, And that was our first experience with a producer. But the kind of classic way it works when you're in a punk band, and you start working with producers is that you'll be like I want to work with the producer and then you'll get in the studio with a producer and you will do nothing but battle that producer and refused to cooperate or to anything they say, you know, because you're a punk and you want your dependents. You know you don't want anyone messing with your sound. So, like Butch immediately just had this ability to kind of disarm all that and it really like, um, just spoke to him being genuine. You know, Like when the conversation came up after, Okay. We signed to a major label and our person brings up, you know, like, okay, What producer do you want to work with, And there's the immediate list of these The biggest names in music that you've ever heard of that. You're thinking like, Yeah, right. None of these people want to work with us. And then you you get one That doesn't want to work with you. Like what could have happened Was that one who did want to work with? You could've just totally phoned it in and could have put you through their usual mold of what they do with every band and not really paid that much tension and had A dozen other projects going on at the same time, But Butch wasn't like that at all. He was all in there every day at the studio every day during preproduction and really, you know, devoted himself to understanding what the band was about to understanding where limitations were where we could be pushed to grow. And to doing it in a way where we were able to hold onto our identity and successfully placed himself as a buffer between us and the record label to protect us, which I'll be forever grateful for. And at the same time also really giving us a chance to learn in the studio like this is what this gear does, like. Hey, you. You all signed a major label, Dear deal, and you're making a million dollar record in a studio right now, and you're going to spend three months here. You should get. You should really get something out of this beyond your record. You should get some experience that you could use for the rest of your life. And that wasn't necessarily something that was spoken. It wasn't until afterwards that was realized, but I'm so thankful for it. It's Bull's eye. I'm Jesse Thorne. Our guest. Laura Jane Grace is a singer and songwriter. She fronts the punk band against Me. Her latest project is a solo recording. It's called Stay Alive. It's available now. She's speaking with our man, Jordan Morris. Your album, Transgender Dysphoria.

How was the guys in the big Cyprus National Preserve Yeah you looking at it right in most major population of Florida? Black bears live in Ocala national forest. Big Cypress I national preserve. Even I think you told me it was like four pieces of wood because they have would at each campsite because they have have designated fire pits and I guess the Park Rangers will bring out would on like Polaris you know and I think that's all I guess. Maybe it was chain of big pieces. Yeah you know. Let me ask you something in careful analysis. Okay did you bring a fire starter. Yes the twisted fire-starter Darsur the torchy's bitch do you listen to the prodigy you brought the torch passed out. Sorry that's wild children. And it was a crab is the album cover was a little fucking crab prodigy. That's the only thing I'm a little disappointed and something we would change. If we can't be with you guys because in naked and afraid you can only bring a machete and a fire starter. Yeah firestone lighter toward afire to Geico and we had a second no I know and you know what after two hours of getting there. You don't i. I'm not going to sit there and yeah been together now. Twenty twenty and I don't know half the first night you might not get a fire. Tom had probably forty forty four pounds on his bag. I had probably thirty. Yeah he is like actual legit hiking pack. Did you bring an actual saw cutoff. Hatchet Brahma Hatchet. I'll Yup and did you get to cut some down now. There's we didn't need to yeah. It was good bob was already. There was actually quite dry so we were able to. Just keep it. Yeah because now you have to create a shelter and bring someone your would inside. Yeah Yeah have you thought of maybe making your own shelter next time. Yeah yeah I'm not bringing nuts. I'm actually not bringing a backpack. Next time I'm just going out. Therefore naked will. Yeah because if you want jobs food truth no shirt no pants job moods you and I can go but as naked and Max goes behind us with a camera pretending he's filming and we will not get in trouble because if anybody else we we show a fake badge this naked afraid. Yeah we're doing naked and afraid Florida episode. Did you see that one I watched so basically where are we were and it was fucking terrible. I gotTa Watch because I watched the swampy Florida one. Yeah and it was like all wet everglades like those it. Ah Yes the I like the Bahamas one. Yeah because I like island right like I feel like that's where I would want to be because of the predators live on that type of place. I don't WANNA be around. Snakes Santon lease the delicious to eat. A camping is fun man. You know like we set up the camp had the a fire going. It was pitch black. We saw some satellites which was really cool. Nice what did you guys bring food. Canned goods abroad can of beans and Kansas Soup. Yeah you with a super gun you sick fuck nine now. What happened last time? You Shit your pants we basically we spent nine dollars the public's right I mean you know our public subs. Yeah that was nine dollars too. Many monique and afraid that they eat their food. I'm not naked and I'm not scared. Scared Afraid I was definitely did I did. I say it was scary. I heard you say you were afraid allowed to Tom. As it was getting dark. It was like well. I'm just so you know I'm afraid of the dark. You know like I ain't realized he added afraid about the dark. I had the headlamp on twenty all all the time. That was awesome. My little flashlight well. It is a little scary knowing that you are how many hours the way to peace right and make so imagine if right panther does come in a tablet of that. I'm afraid of the crazies. No one's there. Yeah redneck rolling. Yeah like we saw you know what I mean. We mentioned that we're GonNa go focal Ma Ma and we're gonNA take their guns and we're gonNA take their food. Yeah and we're going to be very very easy to vanish issue out there. Yeah Yeah Chop you up kill you real quick. There's not going to be no blood. You know burn whatever leftover it's GonNa be by the time they find you the whatever your clothes whatever and then they chop bring you back to the little league world are I was trying to just do like reverse psychology to myself and just saying like human man. Nobody's coming out here only idiot. That wanted to be out here tonight. You know and yeah we had had you know we were. I felt all right in that regard. I felt pretty good. Like you're not gonNA plead with like wildlife. If they do enter the camp you either have have to sack up and like what are they shoot. Even if you just shoot off a stray round to scare scare the I would feel like very very very very very very comfortable if when we go you know I bring my handgun. Maybe to just for fun to. What are you going to run around? I used to cartoon legal so well back on. I got holster seem other different sizes but I would like I would feel really comfortable with a grenade no if I could just holster like around my my my shotgun. Oh yeah to have allowed. I don't know but to have a rifle out. There would be awesome right. I would have zero zero zero zero zero chances of being afraid. No one I have a fucking slug full Vuk in all the Games Josh on though the shotgun is a good grizzly right and a good like reading deterrent. Yeah people that there's no one there though strapped draft being there. There's nobody but they want you to think no man. After being there I would feel confident going there without a gun without a gun especially after midnight. There's nobody on alligator alley. Look you barely heard any trucks. That was passed nine. Yeah it was quiet. I woke up pretty regularly and it was quite a hot one. I think it was kind of Nice. Wasn't it was. It was a good it could have been cooler. It got a little sweaty inside the tents and we had like you know these tents are supposed supposed to be pretty well ventilated and you know. It's it's called. The you know high volume high vent fucking ten. Did you great like okay. Okay you brought your new stuff. But here's a tent or did you bring any solar stuff not too big now and no need. We had like one battery pack. Twelve above twelve hours water so that we definitely did not bring enough water at least for me you know. I had three liters of water jam. I had waited two and a half or two hundred. Which is insane I would bring? There's no water source out there. Now now I would bring two gallons with me. I think there's this other camp that's like you know in the other direction is called Nobles Camp but still off the same trails I think they have running water there because you can't really then camp there for very long. If a surprised they don't have water heavy water spokane heavy each one of those thirty two ounces two and a half pounds yet and you know I think at this point ahead. You're bringing a car. You know those offroad cart things. I'm not again now you want to do is I would only do two nights one pants. Everyone at nobles then hike back in yeah true and the hike from goes back to the car. Is that mostly that road. Oh it is along the lake or along the river. I'm pretty sure because we cut in right east but I getting nobles is straight up there okay you know in the in the rivers here. How about Motorcycles can we. Can we roll up their. Moore's funny because you had mentioned that you were like. Oh what about a bike you know. And then we saw some mountain bike tracks. And I'm thinking like who's walking their mountain bike through here because that area where we saw the tracks. You're not riding through through that shit now's muddy. It's and there's like Cyprus route coming up we were tripping over roots fucking trip and yeah. It's just not that kind of trail it's not like Markham Park or some shit no So yeah definitely bring more water we. We didn't play any music these I wasn't there. Yeah you were fired it up. I was just enjoying the sounds of nature and had a wobbly scared as hell just sitting there but the first time that I'd like did any real back country free camping for majority of most all my life of just unlike campsites and it may be like super out there. But at least there's like a water hookup or You know did you bring the stove or I haven't no I did not bring it. You have it. Yeah that and you were out of his own this little but then you have to bring a pot. No the the whole thing is big. Oh you did have that kit kit. That's all you need the oil. Yeah Yeah Yeah. That's the thing I forgot. Publix was getting instant coffee. There's nothing like a camp coffee. Yes but Evan we realizes says with mark the next time the instant coffee was very terrible. You know it wasn't I like offer God drink. I'll remember where like motorists dude. We were very disappointed pointing in it. I remember 'cause all it takes just bring a little bag of coffee and boy spoil it you know what water put basically a teabag right and then and then you bring your own You can make filter out of it with with the paper filter. Yeah that's true. That's a good idea little Coffee grenades yeah exactly. It's like a shuttlecock of coffee shuttlecock. Yeah Yeah Man I'm pumped hope. Oh Yeah I would like to do another Backcountry trip for sure you know like just you gotta have the right gear though like backpack. If we're going to do more of these definitely gotta get real backpack like the one Thomas as Thomas to. Yeah then you have to back. Yeah I offered him to one but yeah I wanted to try the one I have you know. Would you buy your Amazon. No it's like from work. It's not it's like for fucking transporting we'd but it's like a rolltop. Yeah it's not very good though the Shaima shoulders knees a frame. You know that when you have an internal frame you can take a lot of the load off your right. Of course it distributes in a lot better. It's fucking great. You have an all of your back and my shoulder when I have the hip belt on like I can almost relieve my shoulder. I kinda like stick my ass out out a little bit and I can for you know not the whole little catwalk twenty feet or something. I'm just like adjusting. The wait for a while. Yeah.

"And I constantly made an effort to pare that down sixty great job. All right. So, you know, I really like hosting quiz. And I do that every week get MAC's tavern in Philly. But it just, you know for the money it was worth. It was worth more to me, personally to be home and to be with her, and with, with AC and same thing we've writing writing the blog like as much as I love to do it. Then finally starting to get paid for it, and I released a book based off of it. And there was just that trade off. You know it was worth it. For me more to spend that half hour a day that was using at the end of the night to just be presently, Sarah. And so for me it, it had sort of the opposite effect. I think what's interesting is, I think it became more focused. I I wouldn't spend more time. It also it helped me if that was found re's. So actually went the opposite route where for me, if my wife says, you know, I made plans and so, and so's coming over at five thirty I'm going to log off. Computer from work. But if in the past where she said, oh, you know what? Let's, let's get something to eat at five thirty. And Zach wouldn't duck wasn't around yet. I might vote through that stop sign and I might have just continued working throughout the night. So for me, there was a bit of a difference in, I just became more focused a little bit more sharper, pare down what I was doing and yeah, really. I pick my battles, you know, at work, and I started doing things that, that I wanted to do rather than things that I ex salt. I had to do and you make a great point. Because when stuff like that happens, the mindset is hey, now we have another mouth to feed. We need more money. So sometimes, like you like Travis said, when the female maybe stays at, at work, or maybe stays at home than the more pressure is on the father more to come up with different things. Get a second job. Get a third job come up with a side hustle to get some money. You know that's an excellent point in that study was. There's all kinds of different options that could have been done in your case. Like you said it kind of went the opposite where it was, like, okay, I'll do all these. But I need to figure out where that family time comes in, but a lot of people might miss that piece of it does that make sense. And I think that makes sense. And maybe I was a little bit in a different mindset or mind frame than the two of you when my first child came, and I probably was, you know, I think that you said that you and your wife had been married for four years. How long have you guys been married? Now then about six years, then a year where we'll be seven. Yeah. Seven this October. We'll congratulations. Yeah. How long have you guys been together with your first child? Well, we've been married for eighteen years, which which is strange because I'm younger than Travis Air old. And, and as we waited, we waited five years, you would have five years, okay? So, so I have a little bit of a different perspective than you. And Ian, I want to I'm going to circle back to a couple of things that you said, just in a minute, but I want to offer some different perspective. Maybe for some of our everyday American dads out there that are a little bit different of a situation because the reality of it is that many dads today aren't as established in their relationship with the female partner. Yeah. With the female partner started to think was there, another partner there can be partners. But in this particular birth six. Yeah. Absolutely. So we weren't married. You know, honestly, I think if I remember correctly, I might have even been living with her. I was the dads worst nightmare. I was living with her and her parents at her house. House just temporarily, but I say just temporarily I probably would've they let me. But I was every dad's worst nightmare. And when I found out that sue is pregnant low, that's not the plans at all. You know what I mean? But we immediately moved out like I was immediately like at first I was comfortable there. It's like whatever. You know, I'm a slacker lazy. It's fine. I'm in my early twenties. Let's do whatever we're going to do. That's fine. The moment the baby, you know, becomes an issue. Oh my God. We can't be here. We need our own nest. We need our onus somewhere else. All of a sudden, this is not acceptable anymore. And when the baby came didn't know what to do with that, dude. I still don't know what to do with Isaiah. But I mean at the time, you know, the only thing that I knew I could do was work, and I go work, hard work, long hours. I didn't really and I don't know if I was running away from the situation or if I was just focusing, my time, you know, and I don't know if there's a data out there, maybe this working you tell off because you don't know what else to do. You know that your contribution to the situation right? Hey, at least we're going to have everything that he needs or they need. Yeah, absolutely. As I got older. And we had more kids, I think Ian, I kind of relate to you a little bit. I've looked for ways to step back in my responsibilities at work, or at least in the time spent at work in Paul. I think that you're the same way, but I wanted to circle back to you, buddy. You have four jobs right now. Is that right? That's correct. One of them, obviously is forty to fifty hours a week. The other is one to two weekends among the others once a month and the others every Monday for, for four months year. So when I say four jobs, there's very rarely, if you put the humane event, diagram very rarely point when they all come to a head, but they did last week and it. It was very difficult. When you when you're trying to do all four at the same time, but yeah, it's I try and pick things that I've always wanted to do things that are disturbing and things that I can kind of incorporate my family, and especially if it's not the one paying the bills, and, and, you know, wrestling has been something I've always loved, and always wanted to do and commentator. I get the travel world with that, and they're so welcoming family. And you know, I guess it takes back Nora. You know, when I'm able to, you know if it's close or I'll take them, you know, I've flown them places based on some of the miles have accumulated flying over the years, taking minister Chicago to New Orleans Nashville. So it's a it's a cool opportunity, and, and it's funny how they all fit together like pieces of the puzzle. And if there were any of the situation, I don't think it would work if he gets just to do, I, I hope to accomplish, but personally and. And a little bit financially. I it they kind of all have to line up the way it does. So I'm not sure how it happened. But I'm glad to do. So how do you maintain that? Like I mean you obviously have to have buying from your wife. What is what does she think about your craziness, like, you know? Yeah, she's, she's my biggest inspiration. She. She was the reason. So I, I got to a motor scooter accident in the summer of two thousand six and I was a freshman, I was a freshman and then returning sophomore at NYU and I was down with my parents in the summer, and in Florida and they have a house down there in Ocala. It's and the Ocala national forest, it's a little tiny swamp shack, and they had my mom's motorized scooter down there like best buy, and I took it out, and I was doing fifty which probably shouldn't do fifty on invest, but my tired of slated Nash my face. And listen you know lost my teeth and I. Yeah, and it got pretty backing Russian. And I was so self conscious when I came back to my came back to school. And that was two months later. So. Oh, I think that he'll, I think a lot of physical things that, he'll my face my mouth, you know, things like that were all starting to look better. But, you know, I was so afraid that I kinda I either changed or a change me of scared to do certain things. I've ridden a motorcycle since so there are things that definitely change about me, but Sarah was one of the first people I met when I got back to school. And so there's always been this weird kind of bond that she always loved me for who I am. And that's something kind of right away that I felt and I know she saw me at my physical worst. And then I've known, you know, I know that she, we've gone through maybe the emotional worst, and so to have somebody that, that loves you unconditional is incredible. And so with her she's, she's four. Whatever makes me happy and she's known the wrestling things always been a dream of mine. You know, when we were when we were in college, she's somebody trying to chase down TV gigs. So you Trump me trying to chase that music gigs. And she saw the highs where I was cast on MTV you commercials, and then TV and she saw the lows when, when the well went dry for three years. And, you know, I got to the accident and I know confidence and there was, you know, guitar player without any gigs. And so it, it was one of the things where, you know, she's, she's always been super super supportive of it. And I think that's what becomes difficult for me is because she hasn't identified that thing that, that drives our, you know, work is fun for me. I like I like working from home. I like the little bit of travel that I do. But for her, you know, she loves education, she she writes, grants things like that. I don't know that she's found the sweet spot of what she wants to do yet. And if we're up to me, honest to God, I, I'd wanna run a Dunkin donuts and be wrestling broadcaster. That's my dream job. But, you know, financial commitments, you know, everybody, you know everybody gets a job. And a lot of people go to college and Macao's loans and student loans. And then you start to, to buy things based on your current income, whether that's cars or house, or an apartment or a condo, and you start to get used to living in financial bubble and then it just becomes we're hamster race so maybe won't will maybe won't be the manager that donkey noted the, there's still some financial means in terms of that the house, we've chosen to live in, you know, the key, the KEA souls, that we choose drive, but it's it, it's cool though, she's been incredible. And I've kind of known since I met her that I gave her the she saw the very worst at me. And, and I know that she'll be. They're so anything that anything that she says I take that one hundred percent face value. I know she's honest. And, you know when she told me, you know, she said I could do it. I said, hey, you ring of honor's interested in having me, come fulltime. It'd be the announcer. And essentially, she said, that's awesome. That's always what you wanted to do. You can do it as long as you promise me to bring a magnet home from every city you go. And so that's where we ended up and yeah, it's been a good place ever since. So you said that as I just picked up on a little something. Maybe when elaborate maybe you don't. But you said that it's kind of difficult for you that you've noticed that she hasn't really found that sweet spot. Like if you were to put that into it a word to describe that emotion. What, what would you say that do you feel guilty? I don't want to say that you do. But, you know, is there something that, you know, yeah, there's a little bit of that, for sure. And it's she's. Very introverted, and I think he'd down I am too, and, you know, I we'll to, to kind of turn red light on when I do when I do the ring of honor, TV stuff, and, you know, if it's a business meeting, it's like a quarterly business meeting. I'm able to turn a red light on. But at the end of those days at the end of the TV tapings at the end of the quarter of the business meetings, I want to quickly eat dinner go back to my hotel room and Phlippe..
