"Hour to purchase as a special offer to NPR listeners. Shipping is included in your online order. Welcome back to blockbuster happy hour. It's time for our favorites segment. What's making us happy this week? Stephen? What's making you happy this week? Well, my family has been looking for new things to binge as we sit together in quarantine, and we found the absolute perfect thing, which is Disney plus we all gathered around the old Disney plus machine, and just started scrolling through this giant cavernous menu, and we've taken to taking turns picking from the menu in so like it was my night recently, and I picked onward the sadly suddenly Forgotten Pixar movie. Movie which I think is great and we watched it as a family Katie picked brave one of of her favorite pixar movies. My daughter picked this corny Disney Musical Teen Beach Movie from Twenty Thirteen and we all sat and watched it and kind of goofed along with it. We're looking ahead to watching Herbie movies together. We're looking ahead to watching pixar movies. We haven't spent as much time with. It has been a really lovely break from the world and an opportunity for us to sit as a family and share our favorite, surprisingly wholesome. Programming together so if you haven't really gotten a chance to dig into Disney plus I highly recommend it. That's just binging and scrolling through Disney plus binging and scrolling the Stephen Thompson Storing. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Glenn Weld and what is making you happy this week? Return of the O'Brien, Din Obiara next word Deanne and it's a game. I played on the switch, but it's available on a lot of different platforms in it. You play an insurance investigator. Thousands of pulses just quickened across the nation. It's eighteen o seven. You are investing trading ship that went missing, and has now returned to England without its crew or passengers or its cargo, and your job is to determine what happened to all sixty members of the crew, and the passengers using only the shapes manifesto, which gives you name rank and country of origin, a handful of photos, and of course it's a game a magic stopwatch that allows you to see to investigate the precise moment that a person on the ship died and you see that moment. Moment frozen in time and the cool thing. is you kind of walk around the ship? While that's frozen and kind of see what else is going on, so you can construct a chronology of events. It's also got a great visual style. It's a black and white almost stipple illustrations, so it's kind of like walking through the Wall Street Journal. That's the return of the Ober, Din, thank you, Glen. That sounds really fun, and it fits perfectly with my side. Cost played career when I wear play an actuary. So every now and then. Along comes. The song we need the song. We can't forget the song that sticks in our minds. As a nation. Here. It is luck neighborhoods over police. So of course they have higher rates of crime and why? Are Under Char. So of course they have lower ranked crime, and all of those stupid stabbed to keep using operating sample size so. Shut up. Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up shut. Both bopping along. To that I know this well, he denies. All. These things I was telling somebody yesterday every time. A silence falls upon me this week. That is what I start singing to myself. So that little ditty about crime rates and crime statistics I I saw via instagram. The singer there goes by Wordy Dot Talk W. O. R., D., Y., dot talk on Instagram and the accompaniment. The three part accompaniment comes from one Alex Dot on dot. Keys, K., e., Y. S. also on instagram. You know it is a difficult moment. Moment to find anything light and entertaining and I don't know You would think the subject matter here is light and entertaining, but this is one of the catchy ditties of two thousand twenty of any kind in my opinion, Alex has also posted the sheep music which makes sense because everyone wants to learn the little harmonies, and obviously this is You could spend six hour long podcast episode on this, but I'm fascinated by the intersection of social media and. And one of the things I think is so interesting is that you put something like this into the world, and it's somehow both really fun and really serious and a lot of the other wordy talk. Videos are about linguistics and words and choices. It's really really good content, and it's also as I said. This is maybe the Catchy Song of twenty twenty. So.

"I did see see today on icy veins that a player register really bad penny stocks was playing classic on their phone using steam link so they sit on their phone like WMD controller thing so they're using the cloud to send it to their phone but they were they. Actually I think they were halfway across the the country playing on a different network and they were using their mobile and they got the little seventeen. Oh Wow that's cool because you can do like <hes> remote control from from a phone to a to a computer <hes> Yeah I've done that work for like fixing computers remotely but dern not <music> how how you'd have to have a good connection on both ends and you'd have to really sort of patient with us most yeah not not don't put up with that anybody. Who's listening thinks that this is good? The only caution I've heard is blizzard does not look fondly on Cloud Games names in cloud servers for their games so like I've heard people having issues with the nvidia shield so this is one of those your ons than ice and with with blizzard by playing it but if it's your own server at your own home do it. I don't know rather the you not because yes. It's not an optimal setup. They don't want you going on the forums and saying Oh my mobile device craft doesn't work and everyone's was just like Oh yeah no crap and it turns out that you'll using some really jenky setup and it's the fact that you've streamed up from a computer through a TV back through a phone and onto onto a laptop that you're using halfway across the country and you're like yeah well sucks. It's so bad it's like it's your setup. That's the problem the game yeah fine and I've had a conspiracy spiracy on my side that I think it could be that activists blizzard. Could your cloud service with their own. I that's a conspiracy on my side but I can see them. Wanting the money well duty on their ones Google. Stadia fails or once Google stadium gets shut down by Google then. I'm sure somebody else is GonNa take the place because yeah it's a long running joke that it's like yeah. Google steadier loss forever like every other Google products that they've ever had yeah like Google reader which I now using using feed Ben now <hes> there's an article that the allesandro brought up from segment next this is an article from June but it was about how PC Games are going to be shifting to Iowa android until the nineteen and we're kind of halfway through nineteen so it might be other big news comes out in one thousand nine or we moved to twenty but like Tinnitus masters and different different games are coming on and we have the elder scrolls the blades pudgy definitely fortnight so there are games on their wizards given us one game that we know about on mobile. I'm surprised playing if I now I kept expecting it to be out by now Diablo Marta or we're going to be are we gonNA turn thirty four. I mean is it going to be. Maybe honestly though I think I think it's going to be at bliss con. I'm a huge announcement Diablo for is a thing and by the way to tide you over between now and then you can download Diablo immortal right now that I think it would be smart and I think that'll make up full. The shit show that happened last year book it was yeah it was a horrible market move. I it was not reading the room at all right and even watching the Diablo immortal presentation. It seemed rush honestly though if I was if I was backstage I'm watching that go out. I would have been like hey someone who's got a got a computer with Photoshop upon it just grabbed the Diablo lager put full lines behind it and slap it off there on the end and say we don't have much to set an out but he's the logo Diablo mortally coming sooner be ready and that would've at least kind of shut down some of the basically the trolls trolls aren't k yeah. I can't remember if it was you on the east coast on August factory streams but other schools six got the crowd wild told by just showing a flyover map yes they did they just said it just said elder scrolls and then a number six and everyone just went mental mental and that's enough that's enough. You just need to literally say hey guys. We've started working on this thing and everybody knows how long it takes a game to be. He developed by the time you actually tell someone hey I'm looking on this. It generally means that the game is between two and three years out and people will wait two or three years as long as you tell them shattered games or no PIA by the way it's out today is never a good thing no and this is that's the is messed up horribly with seventy six so it's not a perfect publisher and they did it better than I didn't. Lil and no one's is perfect in this in this world. No one no no companies perfect. Maybe maybe there's one that's kind of kind of no. They're not perfect and areas there's uh-huh as there's a company that that I think is kind of a darling for a Lotta people and that's Nintendo. We all have fond memories. You're offended Nintendo. Oh I'm one to even if I have not switched it up yet with Nintendo console but can you recap the news that was just announced especially as one of the Games to go over is one blizzard fans should watch for well. If you're a fan of multiplayer games and beating the crap about of your friends and enemies then you'll be glad to know the venture Kazoo he's coming to smash as as of the Fourth of September. I have already played as has the character I've completed the like the main sort of boss rushers story mode. I Love Them. They're exactly what I wanted. All the moves. The UPI is the jump pad the side B is the the golden wings. It's it's just just so much this much. It's so great and in does he go if you dash if you dash dash cash side across the screen. It's the like that one way like your Banjo on his on his back and he's just like okay. I guess we're gone on somewhere the talent that's what was called. Yes Oh that game. Oh I have so many members even if I tried and then the the big speculation behind that is that now that Banjo and Kazoo coming are in smash. There's the possibility of well now the Banjo Kazoo smash and and doom sixty four is coming to smash November twenty second and on top of that the Games are now on the switch online pass that means that what's next is an incentive sixty four that means we get a bunch of Nintendo sixty four games on the switch at some point with the switch online poss- or are they going to remake some of those games. I hope they remake Banjo Kazoo e and then maybe develop interested in make in making a third game for that because don't you dare tell me about that xbox game that has their name on it. It is not it is not bedrick. No maybe if you nuts and bolts of it but it's not them no not at all the main one Ed Blissett fans. Obviously Overwatch is coming to the switch. This was leaked technically a few days early because of Amazon posting being ads for eight hundred switch over watch case like Kerri Kasem stuff which wind out of the sales but it still made the crowd crazy I watch a whole bunch of different reaction videos for the the press conference and so many people would just like hell yes. This is great no idea if it's crossed progression with battle net but we'll have to wait and see it does drop the fifteenth of October. I'm going to guess because ps four and xbox Fox don't have cost overwatch and blizzards not really done a lot of that. Actually that's a good point. There's no cross progressional cross play on the consoles is across progression and Cross play between Xbox and ps four or is it. Every every system is separate. I think every system is separate that like they connected the Belenet but I think okay and even like the other three had a little bit of that and then they dropped that at some point yeah well. It's another platform for people to play play watch on being Tobon. We also have louise mention coming out on the switch account that that's actually GonNa be really fun. They actually shadow dropped another game as well cold Super Koby clash where you can play his Herbie Kirby Curvy Covey yeah that's right. It's a four player Co op where everybody's sort of takes a different role. You can be a sword fighter a hammer us a a magic user Hilo and it's kind of like a free to play game where you have energy as you do the quests that rebuilds over time but it is free as well. It's a bit of a we'd sort of inbetween game game and it has micro transactions in it. I don't know I played like one mission of it myself but it definitely one of those like hey everybody have this installed. Let's just play this because we can't decide on what else to play yeah. The one mission I played was literally just drops you in the level and there's a an enemy on one side and you just have to kill the enemy. I'm assuming that it gets more complicated and there's actually like platforming and stuff but at this point I don't know it's got the free to play model that you buy apples with real money and you use is apples to buy urine stuff but you get them from playing through the game might be good might not be the next one is actually game. That's on PC already and is quite an indie dialing. It's cold return return of the Ober Din. The art style is very weird. It's black and white almost like a sketch sort of a thing. It's hard to explain. You've been looking at this one. Haven't you yeah you you made a note that I should totally play this on steam so I got into the wish list list and definitely I because it looks really different yeah so it's what is the motive mystery game sold sold so what you have to do is the main sort of stick is that the over dinner is a ship that has returned to pull it with no one on it. Everyone's dead so you go through and you have like a little pocket. Watch that lets you see the last I think ten to twenty seconds of alive and you have to figure out the every single body on the ship who they are by name and how they died Oud. It's a massive mystery St has multiple lased. Are there different endings. I don't know what the end game looks like okay but I think it's just hey biz x number of people on the ship find out the name of every single one and how they died so it's funny chat. Al Ahli says it's a good murderer the game 'cause I was about to say it sounds like something that's that's a right of my alley. I was thinking of course the latest latest both. DLC fighter has been announced for Smash Terry from failed fury from the K. Franchise. I've no idea who that is. Yes I have never played any of these games. He looks very much just like rear kind of red hat. A lot of people are saying that he looks like the POKEMON trainer Red Red's father because they have a very similar style..

"Okay. So now, the triple a, well, we got a little bit of the triple out their way. I think there's another triple eight game. I think some people would consider playing now in in in a bid not yet. But first, we must talk about the island itself, the island of twenty eighteen and what's this jeans island will be everybody will know that every year we choose like a place Roma game from this year's releases video games. Nice place that we would want to visit. And I year the inaugural year, we chose the world of I think it's ails from final. Nancy fifty this year. I was thinking about the nice places you could go. And of course, the audio will seem to really nice, you know, the the west, but you have all those beds and animals that kind of. Hurt you snakes and all that kind of stuff. I don't really want to deal with that too much thought about some of the places like the ship from the Ober din, which we will most definitely get to in a little bit. But then I found about like I think that looking at that would give me a headache for a long time. And then we'll many other places I tried to think about one from an upcoming game on this list. But then I fought about the environment and the the animals within that would be too dangerous to go that you'll know what I mean when we get to it. But what I did remember, and this is kind of cheating a little bit because it's not specifically a region that was created this year. It's been around for twenty years. We all know it very very well. But this year it got a facelift it go completely remade in hasty and looks gorgeous. And I loved my time in it. And that is the region of from Pokomo. Let's go Pika chew Pok Mon. Let's go. It's the original poke on world, the awhile Dury original region, which is of course, based on the Kanto region of Japan, which is where Tokyo is. And it's gorgeous. If anyone's played that game and has the nostalgia of the older games. Red blue and yellow, you instantly, recognize a lot of the places but seeing pallet town and seeing like. Veridian city and all these other places in Hades hasty in beautiful vibrant colors for the first time was delightful. I go such a nostalgia hit when I stepped out of my house and mum said goodbye. And we walked into pal Tom for the first time. It was it was amazing. It was really really good. So I would definitely choose the region of canto. In the most recent episode of final games. We we spoke with Greg who created one song? And he also chose the Sinoe region of. Pokemon, and we discussed whether we could have poke him on actually, and we never fully answered whether you know, because I say that one of the rules is that animals wildlife would be that. Pokemon to sentient up. Oh, come on too small to be considered just animals. I don't know. But because this is me because this is my choice. I'm going to say that the Pokomo will be that because I want to see them. So if we're going to go, even though it might be a little dangerous of the polka. What we run into? I would like all the Pokemon to be that. So Greg, I apologize. If you're listening to this. I didn't let you have the Pokomo back then. But now we can have the because I'm going. I'm the dungeon masters of this show. So we're gonna go to canto we're going to see some poke among the eyelid twenty eighteen and his to and the next game. We're gonna take alongside red dead redemption. To to the island of canto is the wonderful beautiful game..

"Right to vote for people of color in this country in for Russia's specifically targeting them with disinformation in Facebook. Basically do nothing about it in. It's really really really gross. But then I mean, you've gotta genocide. Yeah. How do we choose which horrible thing that we do because the company I mean? It's really amazing that Facebook for many years. I kind of thought was going to get away with everything forever. Like, I genuinely never thought that they're like roost were gonna, you know, come home to rule, or whatever the term is. I don't know. I'm Roosters come home to roost something's coming home to raise -actly. Right. So evil deeds that they've done. Well. Yeah. And I remember like even a couple years ago on this show. We maybe not a couple of years because a couple of years is twenty sixteen but we've been mostly Pasi on Facebook until relatively recently. When all of this stuff has been coming out. Yeah. I don't do. But do you guys think that they will see I guess consequences? Aglet legitimate legal consequences within twenty nine thousand nine. Yes. I think they're going to like maybe not in this country because our political systems fundamentally broken. But I do think they're going to see it around the world. They're gonna say regulation. Crackdown on them. And I think they're facing competition like never before like people are eager to go somewhere else. And you know, I think I think you're gonna see the venture capital community really doubling down on funding startups in the space. So yeah, yeah. I do. All right. Okay. We can all agree genocide mine. Mar is the worst thing. What are we going to say is the honorable mention here? It's hard PS targeting PSA voters. I I agree. I can okay. There we go. There's your best worst Facebook scandal of. Away. So okay. So third weren't this is more of a personal award every single year the assassins creeds they're going to be fine. You know, the gods of war. They're going to be fine. They're going to get all the attention. I am always way. More interested in the smaller. Really well done games that kind of sucked you in and got you to play them and not talking about like a personal like a perfect game. Just talking for you. What was your most? Underrated gem that you played in twenty eighteen I have mind, but I'd love to hear from us about. What was your? What was your underway the gem? Yeah. This is tricky because what I would have chosen for this guy number two game of the year at gone dot com. But its return of the Ober din. Okay. Which is still an indie game. But I hesitate to call it..

"If I try to see that's the kind of any asking the really important. That's my main strategy really vehicle. Let it through the way. I think like I said that blackout mode is my favorite battle royale right now. And I think it's like the speed and the kind of frenetic nature that four-night can have without all that building. And I feel like the shooting just a little more precise in this that it is important. I I don't know. Maybe that's people people. Like this. It shoots like all of duty. It shoots what you wanted to shoot. It feels good. Yes. It's a well-polished thing. I think still I wish it was shorter and less boring. I think you're my thing. But I can appreciate why so many people like it where does this game belong. Game. Yeah. I would say. That definitely best game. Probably is the only place that it would make sense. I mean it could be ongoing game. But we don't know enough about like where that game is going, right. And if anything like that's the big questions for that the future of that is like what happens to black out next year. Right. Like is this just a move that? They forget about when the next game comes out or do they or does this next game? Now, have it. I soon it does because this is doing well does have it that what happens to exactly is it just a different map in a different mode. And like you're like, oh, I like the other map so keep playing this one which split it out. Yeah. It seems like they almost need to feel like the battle pass already that. Maybe we should go ahead and put it in ongoing game the stuff that they've done with the battle pass is not good like, I would not call that stuff. Good. Confusing. Trying to do a fortnight thing with the like you keep playing these tears. It's like it's like. Menu say if they less confusing menu system if you looked at Doda or. Pretty much go to fort night. But you've got jeez. Right. Yeah. Pudgy tried to do it. Kuzmic stuff is like God ESL couple of this. A lot of like I just went on one of those paint runs. What I mean, they watched it in October. And there I like themed set was deal. More does for which you know, Halloween should be cool. But no, it just doesn't fit right haircutters. I think it looks not great. Aren't anyway, it's a really good game. It's it is very high on my personal list. I think this is a game. I'm probably gonna play a lot of in twenty nineteen. Yeah. I'm gonna prestige in this game. Probably which. Sometime. Okay. Next up on the list return of the Ober, din me our votes, finally. Yeah. Yes. The Dan a game where you are an insurance claims adjuster. And investigating a basically a ghost ship that has returned to port, and you need to figure out how much the insurance payment needs to be based on what happened on this ship into do that you have a magic pocket. Death memory lets you kind of jump around and see vignettes or static vignettes of scenes of death. So you find a corpse were then able to envision or see the events that led to that in a static diorama walk around here. A little bit of dialogue and see the words you don't say anything acted out and thrusts you into like moment. Sick music, Hugh, and you are able to walk around limited portion of that ship to kind of investigate, and you are then trying to piece together normally three things the person who has died the way in which they have died, and then the thing or person that has caused that death, and as you unlock different chapters in this book, I think it's at least nine or so chapters in this book, you're trying to fill out what happened you put together a very interesting and wild tale of the event. That happened on the over and its subsequent return. And when that is all wrapped up, and you feel like you have done your job as an insurance claims adjuster at don't know if that's actually what the term is word..

"They squats gone. Scott Scott school fall. It's ridiculous. I don't understand. How are you just pressing the down button because that could be an issue? I just don't understand how. This is a this is me being sincere is not a goof turn on the game. Right. And then the the interest green comes on in don't touch anything just went for like a minute and editorial video shows up. It's extremely helpful. That would be great. That'd be that'd be amazing because I can't figure out how to play this game. Anyway, I did get it. Because I thought that it would be cool for my daughter. She's four, and I I knew she wouldn't like get it. But we like one v one and have some fun that way. And when I started the game there are no female characters at all. A it's the eight notice. Nope. It's not the eight. It's the original eight and this that you can play saying, she doesn't know. Sam is a woman I'm going to spoil metro it for my daughter my daughter. Yeah. Yeah. Russ, I guess so, but no I like she likes the prince she likes the Princess from the Mario game. Well, Tell. you tell you tell your ten hours into this like sometimes very punishing. I totally fully get a I remember I was talking to Russ because Russ polygon got a copy of this before I did. And I was very curious. Like is it good? And he was like, I don't know if you're going to actually like the story mode. It's a lot of like grinding and unlocking shit, and like getting stickers that change your stats, and I was like, that's exactly my shit. And I get that people. You know, not not liking that. I think that this game, you know, is going to be controversial for like the MLD community. Not emoji. What the fuck am. I talking about like the evokes. Right. But like, maybe it shouldn't be specifically for that. It's certainly that is not like Nintendo's thinking about I just I got Mario party earlier this year, the new the new Mario party, and we played it twice. I think and it was fun. But it's Mario party. This is like the local multiplayer game that I'm like really stoked to put some more time into. I just wish it was. I wish they had made some nods towards a bit more fewer more accessible like I would have to get get deep into it. I just like couldn't couldn't do it apparently video. That's helpful. There's so many modes it's wild that. There isn't anything that can afford deal. But better, but yeah, that's match. It's not gonna look at. Next up. I can go return the Ober din. This is equal over again. This is the most Justin game. I think I've seen in years. Fucking hole you into this game kicking and screaming. I was playing I had to finish all eighty hours of my vegetables of red. This came out at the same time. And I remember I was playing a little bit Oberdan killing time wild red dead redemption downloaded and then read digital to finish downloading. And I said, nah, I'm gonna finish did. And it was the best ways I've ever made in my fucking life. Yeah. It's okay. Over din is essentially a murder mystery on an incredibly large scale, if you've ever done one of those logic puzzles, there's three people, and they live these different colored houses, and you make the grid that you access through these people don't live next to each other. So I know it can't be the two of them that is very much the central mechanic of return to the overdone. It is you're an insurance adjuster who's brought on board this ship. It sounds like the worst game. Right. But you're interested Esser, Bob or the show. I think pope just can't have like he hadn't has I like anti hero. Literal, anti hero zag. But you brought on board this ship to figure out why. No one is on it anymore. How? A lot of people have died on the ship and the way that you sort of unspoiled the mysteries. Anytime you find a corpse you can use this stop watch that lets you go back in time to the exact moment of this person's death..

"And keep us updated on that Kirk. I know you're playing another game that I am extremely interested. In to tell me about that, tell us about that, man. I'm played a lot of things this week. It's been nice to not have to finish rendered emptions anymore. Be like, oh, I can just gave or actually I can just not play video games and not spend this fourteen hour period of time just sitting in front of a screen. So that's also been nice, but I have been playing things one of the games. I've been playing is a really really good game that I strongly urge that you both and all of our listeners play called return of the Ober din. And it is a game by Lucas pope who is the creator of papers, please it's currently on MAC and PC. I have a feeling it'll be on every other system soon, and it's fantastic. So that's my opening description. So what it is is you it takes place in eighteen seven. I believe you are an insurance adjuster working for a nautical company and this ship called the Oprah din. Returns from this assailing venture around the horn of Africa to England and everybody's dead. And you go on board the ship and your job is physically figure out how everybody died, so I guess before I get into the struck. After the look of the game. You may have seen screen shots of the game are images of it. It looks like an old you actually choose. How it looks the defaults looking like an old MacIntosh game. So really all black and white kind of. I don't know exactly what that's called the type of screen, but it's this various type of graphics, and it's the first person game. So you walk around on the ship and the ship is kind of the only place the only environment in the game. And you're carrying a book that is sort of divided into chapters. Tell the full story of the ship and magical sort of I think it's a watch I guess and like a pocket watch and those are two items in that set. So you walk around the whole game looks really saturated, and it's very striking. Looking. The music is really cool music is this kind of dramatic string music and the whole game is basically your goal is to piece together the entire story of what happened on the ship. So you have this book, but the book is empty. So then there are each each book has. Several chapters and each chapter has a name. But you don't really know what that means. It's kind of empty and at the very beginning. I'll give an example, you you actually get you fill in the closing chapters of the book. I so the first thing you see is a dead body right there on the deck near the top the captain's quarters, and if you point the pocket watch that you're carrying at him. It's sort of warps you into this freeze frame rendition of this guy's final moments of life nine characters final moments. So it looks kind of like, you know, in the movie when when time freezes when professor x freezes time, and then all the characters freezing place, and then there other people walking around it looks kind of like that you made reference for our special guests. I did I figured that. Was that was where I would. Yes, I'm very familiar. I do this. So so that's kind of how it works. And so then you walk around in this frozen moment. And so, you know, the first guy you look at he is being shot by the captain who is looking out the door, and you hear a little. Linux dialogue, the captain they're knocking on the door on the Kevin says, all right? I'm coming in the shoots the guy. And so that opens up your book and starts to fill in the chapter, and it gives you, you know, this guy who you have a couple of pictures of the crew taken various points and your goal is to basically figure out who is everybody you have to figure out their name and how they died, and so you're filling out this book, and you have to piece together. Okay. What was this guy's name? Who was he who shot him? Or was he shot who shot him? And then you kind of keep going..

That's betterment dot com slash quality. Investing involves risk. My guest today is senior reporter Colin Campbell. My name is Charlie hall. And today we're talking about return of the Oberdan. You're listening to polygons quality control. Thank you for joining me this afternoon, Colin how you doing. I'm doing very well. Thank you for inviting me. Thank you for inviting me, no big deal. I played return of the Ober din some time ago way back when it was just like I wanna see the first twenty or thirty minutes a game by Lucas pope, the maker of papers, please he's a he's over now nd indie game designer and developer, but his releases have been a little bit few and far between of late. What exactly is the return of the Oprah din is a first person puzzle gyn in in the sense that you all set on a ship in the early nineteenth century, and you interact with his ship through first person. You kind of go through it's looking for clues in order to solve dozens of motives because everybody on the ship. He was on the ship is dead. And it's the ship has turned up in Haba. You an insurance agent show chips. Find out what happened and it gives you some tricks which allow the gang Houston chips, which allows you so. See-through keyhole so to speak and look for clues they've gone this time base, which allows you to get a glimpse of that. The person's perhaps you find a Cope's our skeleton uses Tom piece to get a sense of that poses lost moment on on earth. And that that when I say moment, I it could be literally two or three seconds. You get to see a still image which you can walk around like a three D image. And you might have some audio some of, you know, the sounds of them screaming for coating for help whatever. So you get a rough idea of what happens to them. But what he doesn't necessarily is who killed them or who they all. And that's what you go to trying to figure out say the second time, you have his book, and the and as you gather clues as you make guesses the book fills itself in and you get a sense of what happens on this fight seed voyage. Now, they closed the bodies do not turn up in Cornwall. So you might come across the body. And and you figure out that the person X kills this. You know, this this person? But later on you, you see you see that the person who died is alive in another situation because you'll you're jumping around on its online. All right. So let's zoom in real quick on this book when you say that it kind of fills in the details, you say it also gives you choices to make her guesses to make how does the book function because that wasn't something. That was part of that early demo that I played in the book the book. It sort of acts as a frame for the whole story, and it has different chapters. So that if you're looking at something happening on the boat, you know, the the boats in a storm and mysterious creature. Appears you know, that's that chapter and you can solve you play. You can see that happens off the the boatswain gets shot, whatever. But at the same time, you use the book to make guesses because you know, early in the game, you come across a woman, who's dying of some sort of an early nineteenth century Ireland in her cats, and she calls out for her brother, and you look at the manifest, which is in the book, and you say that there there's a man or woman with a sign said, I you you guess that. They are they are brother and sister. And so you can identify who she is. And who he is. And that's the sole really the easiest puzzle in the whole game and later on you. So you're using the manifest you're using these images that you interact with through the the. Clock. And you're using a couple of drawings are in the book in order to kind of figure out who these people are know use the analogy of super do. Sorry, Sudoku duress say that right? And doku. Yeah. No percent. And I saw another critic a used the same analysis because it is like that. It's like, wow, I'm going to have to come back to this problem when not have a bit more information. And so you wait for another murder in order to go, ROY. Now, I see what that guy's doing looking on the Al outskirts. I understand that person is that person's really wrong. And so you figure it out that way, you kind of try and you like what the problem is not. And I think that makes it a puzzle guy much more than an adventure gang narrative. Sudoku I love that. But the game also has this this very unique. I think remarkable art style. It's it's monochromatic, but it has a very heavy emphasis on on sources of light. Tell me more about that art style. If you plays Mack games in the early eighties. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember doing then you'll remember that on style of black and white line joining during an hour. Remember when those games I came out. They were the future. They just seemed so magical because you sort of fell in at the toddler games spice invaders and frogger have you or text adventures? But in these games, you kind of fell through the images in some more images, and they they told stories, and they and this this style makes use of of that as well. And and it's it's kind of the all is a big US because he sometimes you can't really see what you're looking at because it's like a laundry slide. The line drawings that you see in Dickensian kind of timeframe novels, and they don't always show you clean. You what you want to say? And this is especially the case of human feces. So you say go I with mutton chops. You think that's the guy remind chops, but his job so resist shadow, and that kind of that adds to the the mystery of what you're trying to figure out because you're looking for clues on it's not as if you will searching around the crime scene for out. Here's a bullet. That was less. It's more that your not saying that this person has got Scottish accent? And that person is a little bit older. And so therefore is more likely to be a first Lieutenant RAV on this other scars person who's younger, and is more likely to be shipped may. So so those are the kind of clues that you put together so but the production value, this is far as Indy games. Go in my opinion, completely over the top. It's it's fully three d it's fully voice acted as. Well. It's just it's a really rich play experience. You're moving around with w AST or a controller, right? Yeah. And and the the production values in terms of the is fantastic. And the fact that you will moving around these incredible moments of deep distress in at the salaries about kills his love is about so ending. You'll seeing this realization in his in his facing in this accuser out style. But also everything else is going on the face of the mud or the face of his best friends, the storm this the the fact that. Some of the riggings is halfway through falling down somebody is running away and all of it adds up to the tiny tiny it will narratives of each individual which you have to track. And there were like fifty sixty characters in the game. So it's law to follow as reviews bit law that can go Schori where the only way to keep track of all the events and all the characters is to is to kind of luck keep notes, so we'll have a really fantastic memory. It's like playing clued Khuda. I quoted you got you call it klew, but just just much more complicated. Ada and just so many more levels, and it makes me think of hounds this something talk about is how a who done. It just seemed so perfectly made for gains light vision. This is a story narrative game it has a linear t to it. But it also has a kind of interactive wits that you have to you have to engage with. And when you look at who done it's wherever they were on the stage in the ninety twenty. S or a novels in the twenties and thirties, Agatha Christie novels. They were interactive you invite your nephew wash them on the BBC. Now, you're invites you to interact in the sense that you're guessing all the time who did it. But you're in the hands of the also she makes you think it's the Butler. But now, he's not the Bollock is about let's just being stabbed. So then she makes you think it's the ex wife, but now she she was in the kitchen and the Mona was in living room or whatever. And so you go through this. And by the end of it, you convince yourself that. Oh, yes on you. It was you know, the on Agatha role whatever, but in this guy, and then you fail as the author is the also kind of tights himself back out of it. And it's up to you to to put the pieces together in your you feel as if you're more in control than in the narrative form, and so I think the so people like whodunit s- who live mode mysteries will enjoy this over guy because it really does test your ability to put facts together to solve. Crimes basically column, I've got plenty of more questions about return of the Oberdan. But first a quick message from this week's sponsor now and paulie control. And I was with my Masan, and we listened to Gand tiger. Which is what I call being because we're very close singing songs, and I realized I can I can sort of hang with the time again when the striped one must drive, bro. So I was learning about what happens when you spill mommy's milk and just singing along just nice moments does happen while you first you say, I'm sorry. That's the first step. Then what can I make it better bed or right? That's good. And so the first person song is like, I spill my milk. I told my mom sorry. And then I asked what I can do to help to me that seems like a weird relationship between the child and mother right because it's like spilled my milk. Sorry. It should be like spent my milk. I'm very sad. You fix it. Yes. Not anymore Griffin. We're trying to raise our young men. A real Dan tiger to be self reliant. Yes. Okay. This is for nobody. But you, and I this is for nobody. But me, and you, but anyway, do you have any small wonders for the week? Gosh, there's so much good stuff on net flicks. There's a lot of good stuff. Yeah. There's a lot of good stuff on Netflix right now. I don't know. This is one of your things in that flexing. It is not we're currently watching the new Sabrina show and loving showing adventures of Sabrina is fantastic. As to like people who shamefully watch Riverdale? It's nice to watch show that is very similar, but I don't feel ashamed to watch. Because it's actually pretty good. It's got some of that big Riverdale energy. But like nothing. Not like as much for sure. Not too much. You got anything else? I wanna talk about videogame cook. 'cause I don't have any alad for this energy fast. Okay. I told you about it a little bit. It's called the return of the Ober din. It's from a guy named Lucas pope who made papers, please. And basically you are on a ship. And it's a wreck ship that has resurfaced had a crew of sixty people all of them are dead. And you are an insurance agent in the early nineteenth century who has a magic pocket watch that they can use to go to the exact moment. Like a freeze frame moment of each crew member's death, and using that you have to identify who each crew member is using those moments, and then you have to figure out how they died and you have to figure out who killed them..
