An aerialist on listening to your body's signals

"Over my career as an aerialist. I've learned to listen to signs from my body. He's most important job is to keep me alive this visceral sensation. Fear can be part of the fun. Why do you think we go on. Roller coasters watch are movies. Or in my case. Fly through the air but it will only be funding. We have choice in those moments. Those who enjoy horror movies do so when they know they can look away. When i swing through the edge to take the hands of a pot and a high up in a circus tent ultimately i have a choice of releasing if i trust that person to catch me listening to these signs is an incredibly important life skill and not just for renton junkies like me. If we don't know how to listen and respond to are warning signs of fear. We risk being overwhelmed by a fight flight or freeze stress response when teaching circus. I say my students feel the sensations every day and when they do there's a unique opportunity to talk about them to acknowledge and trust those feelings including how to say no and something doesn't feel right. This is a great foundation for communication about bodies elsewhere. The isn't scary awkward. It's normal unexpected. Because the truth is i'm not just teaching circus skills and teaching consent alongside teaching circus. I have the privilege of working with hundreds of young people each year in my role as a sexual harm prevention educator. I hear their stories firsthand annoy from statistics and experience that the majority of survivors no therapies and teenagers experience high rates of intimate partner violence. That is from someone that dating young people want to know how to talk to each other about intimacy. The more i helped teenagers undestand sexual consent. The more i realize learning aerial can help us navigate life on the ground. So let me explain what. I mean by teaching consent through circus. Let's imagine it's your first time on a trapeze. Usual instruction might go something like okay. You're going to hook your legs over the box climbing up the ropes. Pull yourself to sit. And don't like god. This approach is driving. Something forward without fully checking in with the person and is focused on what i want from them. I'm telling them how to move their body and win. Regardless of the comfort or fia this often results in terrified beginners. Who never come back. Meanwhile the way now talk to my students gives a lot more kids. The person ensuring fully informed ready and parts of the conversation. How do you feel about it. Yeah i feel. I could probably do it. Do you want to have a guy that's it. Yes yeah but the inside of your foot. It yes not. How's that feel perfect. Good and i'm going to put your hand on your back there. You go. I'm going to hold onto your like then i'm gonna put my hand here now. Do you feel safe to put your hand on the ball. How's that for you okay. Going forwards and backwards. We got you this type of language like how you feeling. Are you okay with my hand. Here help circus performers succeed. I believe it also reduces the risk of accidents as a result of my students trusting and being able to act on what they feeling at any given moment. This specificity is required later in life. If and when someone wants sexual intimacy but because it's not a normal part of our interactions it can feel so oakwood and people might think it's easier to say less but saying less can lead to ambiguity problems and potentially abuse there is of course no specific script for the language of consent. The tone and words will be unique to you. It's just a slight reframing of our lexicon to inject choice anytime we're interacting with others bodies intimately or otherwise for example using i when i'm talking about what unfeeling and questions more than statements when it involves the other person

It's a fermented in stainless steel. That brings out the bright lively fruit and it's a two thousand eighteen of vintage, which means you know. It's it's a drink wine, but it's got a little bit of aging and that aging isn't cement tanks. They're lying tanks you're not getting reaching out whatever's in the some met. And that is something will actually getting more popular like central coast to California and then the. Valley in a place in France. And why that's good for ages. especially. Like this Mullebeck has got. Really rich flavors has got tannin's. Need any more edge to it that Oakwood rain. And the cement tanks. Thick. Enough. Insulate the wind and the need. From variations in temperature outside. He'll stainless steel that serve fairly. Thin stainless steel. Barrels earlier you know are are. Not Thick, they don't get a lot of temperature art. And when you look at. Wine that is being young age. They've put it in sellers where. It's protected from variations and temperatures and humidity. Now, this doesn't feel the steel tank doesn't go seller. Control but it's pretty good. So it actually helps to wine age. It helps deal recover. Without any outside interference with cement this. Sounds Weird maybe at first. But or just start taste, and it's fine and this is a really rich. That's Mullebeck. It's got great flavor you sometimes, we get chocolate stuff going to get that because Joplin the no are going to be here. There's no hope. But you don't Miss It. There's Tana's dusted. "Hello everyone welcome to the addicted mind. Podcast might guess today is Carter. Stout and he is the author of an awesome book called lost in Ghost town harder. You introduce yourself. Are you doing so good to be here? My name is Carter Style and I'm on the addicted mind best. That's right. Welcome is so. Tell me a little bit. I as we're talking a little bit earlier. I just finished your book lost in Ghost town and it is a great read and I got it on audible and actually listen to it and it's so well read as well I. I feel really afford to the person who read it was just fantastic so It really gets the tone right and the beach right and I'm very grateful. Yeah it is it was. It was great to listen to so. Let's just jump in and talk a little bit about your book in your story shore so I grew up down in Washington. Dc Georgetown and She had a privileged background currents were business folks and lived in a big house and pretty much everything that a child would ever need besides the love and attention. Of course we all hope for as children and so I felt really felt guy was someone who was had a lot of value on my father was working all the time and my mother was alcoholic and pretty much on my own and that led to a lot of feelings of is delusion mints Blue self-esteem and from a very early age I had an older brother introduced me to alcohol and cigarettes and then to other substances when my parents got divorced. I think I was about eleven and there was. It was so chaotic in my house was so unhappy in my house and it was such a sense of disintegration of his family. That was a part of that. I began to experiment with eating disorders and I can't anorexic. I also game blame. It would for a young boy. Ornate less at that time was very rare and of course nobody knew what to do about it and that was really the way that I dealt with the pain of what was happening in my life and to learn to read that was my first real springs with addiction because it was a food addiction. Those addictions led me to in my teen years experimenting with Drugs and Alcohol and but my twenties when I was living in New York is when I started cocaine starting doing cocaine. And that was something that was prevalent. It was around a lot of friends that were in entertainment downtown and it just seems to be everywhere and of course my appetites or it grew and I began to really isolate myself from the group and started doing it by myself and I realized that I had a problem and I thought I moved to Los Angeles. I am really gonNA be able to take this on and and get myself back on track because La has each's and people go on hikes. Edgy do yoga. The macrobiotic food at least that was a mess and I told myself and so I ended up coming out here and of course the addiction got worse and eventually when I was really at my lowest point and I almost lost everything I ended up in Venice California and this is really the what the book focuses on is my time in the present tense of the book. Boston goes down and that time I had lost all of my friends. My family wasn't speaking to me being evicted from the small efficiency. I had it couldn't afford. I didn't have a bank. I didn't have a computer. I didn't Abbas phone but the one thing that I did have was a car and it was an old Ford Taurus sedan and because of that car I got introduced to a drug dealer in a part of Venice called the Oakwood neighborhood which was largely African American. And I didn't realize when I moods Venezuela this Oh good neighbor. Heart neighborhood was the epicenter of crack cocaine on the Westside of Los Angeles recept center of drug activity and wandered in and I met as Stra dealer need flynn who needed a drier and we quickly became friends and began driving around as he did his deliveries and he introduced me to this. World Service Underbelly of drugs and gangs and I was a white guy in a very precarious neighborhood and Flynn became a close friend. He was really not like it's a drug dealer. He was smart. He was self educated. He was ritual. It was kind and generous. Moral and So the two of us from very different backgrounds. Different races different socioeconomic status is forged his unlikely friendship and that's really what the book talks about a lot and focuses on. Is this friend that we had. And as we're delivering drugs to all sorts of different. He will on the west side and ultimately what happens is that he and his grandmother Beatrice who becomes a mother figure to me. Invite me to stay in their home and really for the first time in my life showed me the love and acceptance and care that. I've been missing for my own family and it was really bisque. Care that they gave to me for help me to WANNA take care of myself getting guests

"Machines to areas in need and puts local women in the business of making and selling the pads. The goal is to empower women and give girls a path to complete their education to raise awareness for the project, the oakwood students decided to film, a pad machine project in India, and the result is an Oscar nominated documentary short called period and of sentence, I visited Melissa Burton who serves us executive producer on the film on the oakwood school campus. And she introduced me to two of her ninth grade students who are involved with the pad project Naomi Lopez and Maggie Brown Maggie who was also an associate producer on the film talked about when she learned how girls her own age or having to drop out of school. I was really shocked because when I first became a part of the pad project. I couldn't even like say the word period. But I knew what it was. And I knew how to handle it. But I was so shocked that once someone gets their period, which is totally normal and healthy bodily function. I was shocked that women and girls dropped out of school because they fall so behinds because they have to leave for an hour to go. Hide the rag that's not safe to be using or because they become like a target for rape or sexual assault. And I was so surprised that I never even knew that or that. It wasn't talked about on ask you about how you came to learn about this part of the world what these girls were going through, and how it evolved from something that you're aware of to something that you wanted to focus on and then something you wanted to make a movie about so students approached me to be the faculty sponsor for an organization called girls. Learn international. So as part of that, they send students sixteen years old to the United Nations at the. On the status of women to advocate for girls. And I was there with a few of my students, and we learned about this issue of girl's dropping out of school when they begin to menstruate, and we also learned about Morgan anthem who made a machine and maybe because we're Angelinos and from Los Angeles. I think we thought right away that we needed to make a documentary film to raise awareness about this. We had no idea how hard that would be along that would take. So that was seven years ago. And now here we are. So so exciting it takes a lot to make any film even a documentary short. I want to ask you about what things you did to help raise money help produce this film. What were the things that you personally contributed to the making of this film? So I joined when I was in seventh grade they were fundraising for the pad machine, and the initial film budget, and I. Wanted to get involved to went to an event at oakwood. And I was like sitting there listening to what these girls who were maybe a year or two years older than me. They were talking about how they were working with girls across the globe to create an affordable solution. And I was like I have to get involved in that, that's amazing. And so we are working on fundraising. We're working on planning events publicity. And we're also working on getting a crew in India that would help translate and also like guide us around are hard to know that your mom is a movie producer at what point where other students using friends relatives parents who had some expertise in the movie business to help move this along. So this really all started with the kids and Melissa who really wanted to make this happen..

One is you and I used to go I would pick you up and the oakwood apartments and people on here heard us talk about the oakwood apartments because there's this great documentary the complex Hollywood com Hollywood if you watched that documentary. Yes, you has kind of feelings that it give you you know, it it's weird because oakwood has such a double like memory in my mind, one of which is was some of the greatest years of my life because I was like a young kid from a small town in Kentucky came out here. And all of a sudden, I fit in like there was group of young kids between the ages of eight to sixteen that all were here because they were from Florida, Texas, Michigan Kentucky, and they were all come. Out here because they didn't fit in and they had this other dream, and all of a sudden, I was I found like a like a tribe tribe. Yes. So to speak, and I wasn't thinking about competition. I wasn't thinking about like, oh that guy over there. He's like going to beat now. I was a kid. I was just enjoying the experience. You're also rushing. Let's just say that you would very good as the dark side of it. Because what happened was even at Oakland like when I started getting call backs, and when I started getting like directors meetings for whatever it was I felt like a total shift in how I was you'd and all of a sudden, you became like oakwood famous you became like known and the competition with the parents is the crazy thing at a time when I was like maybe ten years old, and I had just gotten the polar express was a movie that I just done or or small dishes or something.
