"Back Todd is up next. Hello, Todd. Thank you for letting me get in. I just figured to follow Georgia folks on this day I figured I'd better call this one out of 7 that good it's not good odds, no. I says how many times the last summertime we played, that's how many times they beat us, I think. That is correct. So that all clown real good and also we built two domes over in Georgia at least they ought to come to Birmingham, build us one. Don't you think? Absolutely. Also, I don't know how to respond to highlands called all the things I know to say. I may have kind of like a little troll and he scares my old children, Paul. That's all I know. I don't know how to respond to him. But anyway, I also let all you know we're praying for Francis, his mother in law. Well, that is the view to say, yeah, he called in life. Thank you very much, Todd. Rod, Ron is up next to Virginia. Hello, Ron. Paul, long time caller, buddy. I've been listening to Larry from Shelby Alabama about the Viagra thing, it kind of turned me on a little bit. I'm not down and I man, but the next time you talk to him, Paul, ask I man if he's ever tried Viagra when he's been on your show. And brandy, you know, when you said about Randy, who goes Viagra, is that glaxo? Welcome. If I get a call from one of their people, I mean, we could do a sponsorship. Sure. You know, actually, you could probably do a commercial and going off on that. That was pretty good. Is I want to talk about the Michigan coach Matt west, the offensive quarter to get fired today, Paul. For computer corruption of fraud or whatever. Now, you know, you've been good about this today and yesterday and a day before about Jim Harbaugh. Okay. Okay. He's got his offensive coordinator that is fired. Jim Harbaugh is in the corner for Lion to the NCAA and they're waiting for him to come out and tell the truth which I don't think that's going to happen or Paul. What do you think about this? Do you think it's going to be like a Domino's? Thing that they got their offensive coordinator then they're going to come down and get the risk of Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff and himself. This is not NCAA related. This is something I think criminal is it not or at least borderline criminal. Yeah, I mean, he's accused of pilfering emails from the school system. So I mean, I know it sounds absurd, but I don't think it necessarily relates directly to Harbaugh other than it's another weird story on Harbaugh's clock. Thanks for the call, do appreciate it. AJ is up next. Hello, AJ. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, Paul, for letting me come in here and address Larry. Thank you so much for the call. Again for the night. Larry. If you want to bring, if you want to, if you want to throw me into a turnbuckle or you want to do whatever you want to do, that's fine because I'm pretty sure that I could buy you a 12 pack of Bud Light and a box of popcorn, you'd sit over and stand and shut the living rip up. What I really want to talk more importantly, I want to talk about. I want to make sure did you feel personally threatened by that phone call? Not at all. Not at all because I come from the south tape. Say, hey, down there at oakham up on my like, I'm right up here at pale city, I love you Mark. We're in a better place up here. Say down here and I'll come out later. Stay down there and right next to you, baby. Wait, what are you in the up and up up here? So Larry stay down there and we'll send you a 12 pack every night on the end. Hopefully they have empty. But what I really want to talk about is Paul. I'm an album fan, and as you know, but Georgia is now at this point. All Georgia is is an offspring legend was wrong. They're not Alabama junior yet. They're just an offspring of Clemson. At this point, am I wrong or right? Well, I don't know if we're first of all, I don't think the records matter a whole lot other than where we are in time. I think that's what Georgia has in its favor. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. They're for the moment. For the moment. Listen, I'm an album fan. We've been battling Alabama all my life I'm 46 years old. And I promise you, I respect Nick Saban as a winner, and as a fantastic coach, let me another thing, can I get your take on one thing? Would you say that the landscape of college football has completely changed because of the stronghold or the monopoly over pay their next siphons were recruiting abilities in Alabama or the ACC overall? Because both of them can kind of correlate together and now we have this NIL because you got dumbo Fisher and people like that out there. Ohio State can't stand it. There's so many there's so many West Coast east coast midway. There are so many there's so many college camps that can not I couldn't handle the dominance of the southeastern conference. First of all, and then you've got to, if you don't say SEC, you have to mention next excitement. Well, AJ, Nick Saban has been. The most dominant coach in the modern football era. What he has done is breathtaking and everyone had to adapt. I mean, the SEC had already was already in a position of dominance. I mean, this started with Nick Saban adela shoe. And then it went over to urban Meyer and then less miles had a national championship in the middle of that and auburn's had won and almost had another. So yeah, I mean, this thing has been building, but when you consider that Sabin won 6 national championships in a 14, 15 year period. Right. And I respect Georgia as well as you do. And I respect Alabama heidel, but I respect them. But the thing about it is, I mean, intellectually speaking, I mean,

"And how humble you are in the authenticity and how they want to play for you. What is it about whether it's you as a person or your offensive philosophy that makes you great I don't know You know. I think in the end you said it. I just try to be me. You know I don't i don't try to put on a front. Because i really believe when adversity strikes the real you comes out anyway. She'd rather be authentic and transparent from the beginning I do believe in in in letting those around me know that. I believe in them When they've earned that right And i think that that instils confidence and belief and a lot of that to me that goes back to my time with coach edwards. You know he. He was a leader of men. He was not just a football coach. He was a leader of men. But i never went into a saturday. When i was in college playing games where i didn't really believe that my head coach didn't have the utmost confidence and that he believed in me and i'm always held onto that that You know part of my job is to make sure our players and the right mental state to know my head. Coach has my back. And i might not be perfect. But he's got my back. And i think that that doesn't still confidence in them and where they can go out and cut it loose and play fast and free and It's okay to make mistakes. We just don't wanna make the same mistake twice. Coach you said at the bulls eye is texas. You're always going to have a somewhat of a bullseye on you but even more now for sure and the season opener september force against louisiana. We wish you luck. We thank you so much for the time. All the best already. Thank you guys. Thanks for coming on oakham. You know steve sarkissian again on the goodyear hotline and he didn't want to name the quarterback kind of opening get some news here now he he's been asked like over and over and over again. It's amazing he won't name of the nfl's a similar way. Well the most interesting thing. Though and bart we talked about this yesterday a lotta people believe. That coaches don't name starting quarterbacks because they don't want to give their other opponents or defense is a competitive advantage. That was my belief but soccer was asked about about why he wouldn't want to name it and if that was the reason he said no. That's not the reason it was essentially. I don't care about defenses. that's like i'm good. We're gonna be fine. So i think he's really trying to figure out this battle we talk about in the nfl. How close the battles is the battles are. This is a really close battle of texas and so anyways for me. I hearing a offensive coach. Talk about me. I don't care about it for defense knows or not like that's bold. But he's got the track record to prove. Yeah we'll see how things go and again the transition for them. Eventually to the sec. J. wilson brought.

"In is an interesting time in chicago because it has been a long time since the chicago had a very high caliber quarterback jordan. You like to always poke fun at this. How long has it been every time i listen to the bears. It's a sin lachmann conversation. Did you watch play. I didn't watch lachmann play. But i always hear about sid lachmann. I would love to turn on a bears national broadcast and not hear about sued luchman because the quarterback position has been finally figured out here in twenty twenty one so maybe this is the year that will finally figure that out because the bears did jump ahead. They swapped spots with the giants and they went and took Their quarterback of the future. I believe which is justin feels but they still have qb one. Which is andy dalton. Right now on the roster. We're going to ask the head. coach of the chicago. Bears here momentarily matinee gi. What is going on with that quarterback position. You're listening key. Shot jay will zubin. Who's presented by progressive insurance. Guests will join us on the good your hotline. My name is shake or not. He is jordan cornet. I actually am from chicago so i like to call the bears. My my team. That i cheer for you've kind of jumped on the bandwagon with me a little bit. I'm a big fan of the organization and the people in that organization treat and my wife and how they they become more transparent with things. So yeah i root for the bears. I lived in chicago for fifteen years. Matinee he's always been really good to me very fair to me look forward having a conversation with him and learn more about this team because there are a lot of questions not on a regional local level nationally people that like this league curious of exactly how these bears are gonna look. It's so funny. Because jordan and i you know we obviously watch football together and andy. Dalton obviously played for the bengals for a really long time. My husband's team and now he's playing for my team in the chicago bears. So i feel like we're very familiar with andy dalton although not in a bears uniform yet was with the dallas cowboys last year so we will see how this obviously transpires is. The bears are in training camp right now. we are happy to welcome in head coach of the chicago bears. That would be matt nagy joining us here on the good your hotline. Good morning to you coach. I'm so happy to talk to you. It has been a minute and i know That you know this but just to let everyone know obviously hosts this show with my husband here. And i've been telling them all morning long. You know coach when you say something you mean it and what you've been saying is that andy dalton is does have the edge over justin feels and will likely be the week one starter. Can you please tell my husband here why that is correct. First of all. Good morning chez jordan. Going to be on here. And you know i think for us One of the things that we've done here and then ryan pace. His general managers really create a lotta great competition and Obviously with us going ahead and moving up and drafting just in There's a lot of excitement. And but there's also that plan of the process of how we want to go about with this and you know. All of our coaching coaches on staff myself included. We've had really good. Oakham communication with andy with justin with nick on our. We're going to go about it. And i think the number one thing we've said to them is if you guys just worry about just trying to be the best quarterback that you can be and focused on today on on just doing everything. The right way. great things are gonna happen for all of us. And that's that's where they're at. The beauty is that they all understand that they agree with that. And it's a it's a really healthy room right now. In today's day one they and they had their conditioning tests this morning. And there's gonna be a great competition in all the positions but obviously the focus is going to be a quarterback and andy has played a long time in this league. He's had a lot of success He understands You know where where this city where this organization We're we're all at us coaches with justin berate now in is the starter in the back up and and they they accept that they understand it but they're competing their tails off. It'd be the best be coach. I i don't know if you had a number set for the over under and how many times we'd ask about the quarterback position but like you said it's naturally the focus. It's a quarterback driven league and their question marks at the quarterback position With your group right now. So how can justin fields win the quarterback. Well again you're right. I mean over under is is obviously pretty high territory. We we we. We all understand that Right now we just had our big team meeting last night. And i think what's exciting for our team and for our family here is just knowing that where we sit where we are that. It's very it's going to be the focus of the quarterback position and It's it's for. Justin for indie for nick Those guys that that's not a part of the process for them and trying to figure out or watch every rapper be concerned about every throughout their literally. Just trying to digest this offense and have successful place that we could win. And so i understand the you know the outside and everybody wants to know You know a lot of different questions and get questions answered but for us really. That's not our focus. We're just gonna let everything play out in regard to every position competition-wise and and andy coming in Being the starter taking over this hot oh and coming in here. They want to training camp and show on all these guys. It's like to be a leader and then for justin to be able to learn from from any Again when i say. The room is healthy every day. That we're in these meetings Andy dalton was doing everything he possibly can to help. Justin just as when. Andy was a rookie trying to get help from the guys. You've learned from the same with nick. So our focus right now is is trying to be the best offense. We can be with those quarterbacks and then of course on defense to get that thing back on track and and trying to put a team together while win talking to matt nagy right now. The head coach of the chicago bears listening. Mckay jay z. On espn radio and on espn news are a coach I know last year probably didn't go exactly as you had plan. But i heard something that you said. That was interesting. And the fact that you wanted to hang a janas into koumba quote up on all your kids doors and the essential root of that quotas when you focus on the past. That's your ego. And when i focus on the future that's my pride and i want to focus in on the moment in the present. And why is that quote so special for as you approach this next season in the.

"Going ahead and moving up in drafting johnson. There's a lot of excitement. And but there's also that plan of the process of how we wanna go about with this and you know. All of our coaching coaches on staff myself included. We've had really good oakham with andy with justin with nick on how we're going to go about it and i think the number one thing we've said to them if you guys just worry about just trying to be the best quarterback that you can be focused on today on on just doing everything the right way. Great things are gonna happen for all of us. And that's where they're at. The beauty is that they all understand that they agree with that. And it's a. It's a really healthy room right now. He understands You know where where this city where this organization We're we're all at us coaches with justin on the right now. India's is the starter in john's the backup and they except that they understand it. What they're competing tails off to be the best they can be and so we will see that quarterback competition firsthand again is practice begins for the chicago bears today. It's raining count. Here's why that's interesting to me. And all you can do is re read between the lines and try and gather what you want in terms of how it sounded the the connotation jason what however that works from from what came out of coach. Matt nagy was kind enough to join us into me. He did not get away from this. A competition right and to me when a head coach is very firm in no our star that we drafted is young is not ready to be a pro quarterback is i ready for that pressure. He sitting as long as we keep our veteran healthy. That's what you say if you don't want any speculation and if you don't want any sense of oh maybe we're gonna see justin fields. You stay away from all that you do not hear that from any matt nagy coachman came in here and said it's a healthy competition right now right now are starter. Is andy dalton. Those two things are big to me. Because when you're saying it's a competition you're not shying away from this is anybody spot and when you say andy dalton has learned a lot of years in his thing and he knows how it goes it means andy is probably well aware of. He's the guy today and after that there's a lot of uncertainty because we are open to the idea of justin fields coming out there and being are week one starter. Let me just say this i was. I was beating the drum for andy dalton every day of the week to anyone that would listen including my husband here and after having that conversation with matinee. Gotta say i'm i'm i'm pulling back a little bit on it. Here's what that told me. Yes he pointed to the years that any is played into the league is. How quickly can justin field pick up this playbook and furthermore matt nagy is not afraid to be progressive as a head coach. We saw that when he decided to sit every single one of his starters during the preseason two years ago he was really one of the first coaches him in sean mcvay to come out and say that they were doing that and i think the rest of the league followed suit he was had a very short leash for Mitch trubisky when they switched. Nick foles was the time pulled them. Didn't care to do the traditional wait until the next game or a bi week. Didn't care so when it comes to making decisions he's not afraid to make them in the moment and so we made the point about. You need to play longer in the league. I thought to myself well. This says something to me that perhaps if justin fields really dozen press during training camp and i don't we probably won't see must have justin fields or andy dalton during the preseason. We're probably going to see nick foles. Whoever that number three is come. Preseason football Because he wants to preserve their health but nonetheless if and look justin feels had a very high wunderlich score. He's very smart and pick up things really quickly. Obviously we saw that ohio state if he knows that playbook well which is very intricate one on the offensive side of the ball and he feels like that quarterback gives them the best position to win week. One against the rams in la. Then i'm not gonna say it's for sure andy dalton because that whole conversation steered me a little bit differently which is surprising. Okay we're gonna play a game of over under speaking of all of this. We're gonna bring in evan our producer here and he's basically going to give us an over under on the weeks that these quarterbacks could be starting so we'll be basically rookies verse veterans. If i'm understanding this correctly and i would assume you want to start with chicago. Yes yeah let's start with chicago. Here's over under service. Third of the bears And there's reasons. I choose these weeks so for the bears. Andy dalton justin field over under the quarterback change. If andy dalton is presumed the starter happens week. Four and a half. Now i'm explain. They play the lions at home in week. Four the raiders at home in week five and the packers at home in week six now. Raiders is on the road. Raiders is in vegas at the raiders. Yes over under four and half speaking of vegas over unders go ahead jay. It's really easy for me under. He says start week one and here in some of the words there from coachman nagy kind of further My belief further my belief. That that's what it's gonna be you brought in a guy because you want him to play your system and showcase what you can do as an offense in mind and since matt nagy has arrived. He's never been able to do that why they haven't had a run game. They had a healthy offensive line and he hasn't had his quarterback that can do the things in his style of offense and he's gone out and said that publicly over these last two years. We thought be nick. Foles a clearly. Wasn't he wants a mobile guy. He wants a guy that could go vertical times. That can really open up this thing. Justin fields was second in the f. b. s. in passes completed for twenty plus yards last year. It's college it's fine but it shows that he's a mobile guy it shows. He's got the head for it with wunderlich mentioned and it shows that he can take the big shots all things..

Who seven twenty p who. But i mean you tell me my friend. What are you expecting from. Nintendo or abandoned namco. Tomorrow i read her for nintendo. The come out with a tyke game my okay so so so you have this console. Okay so you pretty much bringing out a updated version of I'm like no no man. go go back to. What brought you to the dance nyc. Bring out the game staff. Attract us to y'all and that that's what nintendo to me has been losing out on night. They have some good since the but they need to have that that That good hit game. That's gonna be able to fight with people like wrestling evil or you know mad and and stuff like this. I'm i'm just waiting for for nintendo to bring something that no because i grew up. It would nintendo win. It was hiding popping. Will you had the the in years and a super aeneas everybody could name off. What was their favorite on in years and what was their favorite on the super nintendo. Like for me. I could be like okay. Nintendo or your. It was mario in duck hunt with super nintendo. It was killed instinct. I can name at all but with the switch. It's an age. I haven't been feeling nintendo for a while and it's not a bad thing but it's just something that they need to approve on andrew. So yes so. I don't know much about switch. The only thing. I don't own a switch and again when reserve i wanna slip oedema. That's the only reason why the by switch noble world pokemon is on the way in that that is the only reason pious way john pokemon guy oakham on Had personal connections to rip watching it. But yeah there's something lacking with the switch. I mean we go back to nintendo way on one of the things about the nintendo we that brought nintendo and when denver was hot and it was the advantage over xbox and ps three at the time was motion sensing and they attracted a whole bunch of people who are not gamers to their system. And you attract the people who were families to it. You attracted old people people who were sourcing. We fit which is really really smart and they created a whole brand new market and intend those missing with the switch. I don't even think unita kane necessarily. That's like a competitive. You need a whole new market. And i think nintendo is missing the ball and you got pokemon spokane will sell twenty.

"To accomplish. What was that. Well in this case we were symbolically trying to And what we felt collectively was up lake on the american music scene. I'd spent several years on the road playing music before i joined the white house and it was very much tongue in cheek. But it literally gave the other side A voice and what we were really trying to do. Is you better than anybody know. We're trying to People in the stands because there's so many nine white sox themselves we're not overly exciting bunch and So when you have a makeup game on. The calendar became a twenty nine double header. I looked out my window told the cops in chicago. We'd be lucky if we have thirty five thousand. But i was betting with thirty five. Well we have thirty five thousand lined up outside the old comiskey park at three o'clock in the afternoon we opened the gates. At four it was a double header. First pitch at five o'clock six o'clock we seal the gates with sixty thousand people inside by seven o'clock there were forty thousand people outside trying to get in so at the end of the night we had one hundred thousand people of course The baseball guys weren't kind. We forfeited the second game after losing the first one to one and the rest is history. That was only the fourth forfeiture in the history of baseball and it made it very difficult for me to find a job. After leaving the white sox. They'll everybody mike about how it came off in what actually happened. That caused the forfeiture and that second game. Well as i'm standing there you know we stick dynamite. The carta lonzo family who'd been very instrumental in helping Dad design and build the exploding scoreboard. We were all friendly so we. Everybody brought a disco album. They got in for ninety eight cents and we collect the disco albums and between games. We put them in a dumpster. Roll it out to center field warning track dynamite and blow up two hundred and fifty feet in the air and it still is. I'm telling you this thirty three years later. The most exciting explosion. I've ever seen at the very top. Two hundred and fifty feet in the air was my career. I'm standing second base. Marveling at this thing thinking boy we're gonna make the cover of rolling stone and all of a sudden we were gonna make it all right but not in the way i had in mind for. People slid down the foul poles. Ten guys jump from the center field bleachers which at oakham issue was a pretty good drop and in four and a half minutes there were ten thousand kids on the field which i attributed to the fact that it was only ten years after woodstock so it was a celebration of sorts and the next day booted kyun fully up to you and i think he was landed. Gentry said no more negative promotions invasive. Dad's reaction to all of this. My only one who was really saying about it. I mean you know jimmy. Pearsall built another year and a half career on yelling from the press box and lease in the old great writer for the sun times Chastise me roundly but the clock in the morning and the old man looked at me and say you know he'll he always called me mcgillicuddy for county. Mac is one hero. He said every once in a while promotion works too well and that was his signal to me that while he was unhappy with the results he understood when you buy the lightning. It happened so rarely. And it's very hard to predict where it's gonna end up and in this case It ended up on my resume. I remember the story. And maybe saw this episode of wjr cincinnati when the station put on this this promotion where they were over a ballgame and they wanted to let people have put let people have money and they tied to the two turkeys and threw them out of a helicopter. While the problem is turkey's don't fly. They all crashed in fact. I've actually i've actually over the years heard something about it. But you know. What's so strange. Ron and and you know it's I don't know how many you know. Some fifteen thousand twelve thousand however many shows you've done and we just just just a real credit to you but over that time one of the things that i remember laughing about About this promotion was the first ten or fifteen years. I was a pariah. I mean. I couldn't get a job except in radio and soccer. Which of course soccer fans love riots. So now it's become kind of warm and fuzzy and part of the you know you were there then and it's really been a strange shift. Almost a hundred and eighty degrees. Yeah i think in this day and age. People are looking for people that think outside the box. I think mike you were just ahead of your time an awful lot before we break here and we've got about two minutes. Tell me a little bit about. What your dad's philosophy was that you then gleamed onto about promotion when it came to sporting events you gotta take a chance you gotta take a chance and you have to do everything that you can to involve the fans and listen to the fans and because he is issue so kindly put an iconic figure people forget that legends death that way because they have lots of failures so when dad buried the nineteen forty eight pennants in cleveland that he won the world championship in nineteen forty nine. They flick a seat him for three days for the tasteless gesture of burying the flag. So you know it depends time place and and tongues how far it's in cheek charlie. Finley was another kind of maverick. Did your dad see himself. As a maverick and i would assume that period period of time that everybody else was not like mr vet. Yeah he you know. The great thing about charlie tailored himself our charles. Oh we we refer to Lovingly he really tailored himself as a maverick not necessarily after after that. I think that sells them short. But they've never really set out. Dad loves to annoy the establishment. And that was really much more his goal. He understood that the fans are the single most important element of any sporting events and so he wanted to entertain them and he knew that they like himself. You know we're mistrustful of palm poverty and and large amounts of money and guys who bought ballclub says toys so that really gave much more motivation than to to create a name for themselves. We only have thirty seconds. Left but mike I i'm sure your dad realized he could do nothing about how many how many ells the team had but the could do something about the experience that the fan ham am i correct in that assumption. Absolutely and you know and he step further and say look. Every game is not going to be the most exciting. You know you're warriors. I always going to perform and so there's nothing wrong with sending people home with the idea that winners lose boy. We had a great time and that doesn't mean he wasn't competitive. It simply means that he was realistic. We're talking with mike. Vecchi is the president owner of the charleston. River dogs a couple of other minor league teams as well and certainly that Name is iconic when it comes to sports and particularly baseball and when we come back on the other side. i'm gonna talk to mike about some of the promotions. He's done at the minor league level about the minor league baseball experience and how it differs from the major league experience and where he thinks up experiences in sports going. We've got you on america's sports talk. Show your outdoor experiences. Could be better clearly better. Cain sunglasses or made exclusively with polarized lenses for optimal clarity. "We have a report from mary. Leakey about a controversial circular formation of stones at the decay site in lower bed one. She suggested that they may have been placed as supports for branches or polls stuck into the ground to form a windbreak or rough shelter. In general appearance she wrote the circle resembles temporary structures often made by present day nomadic peoples who built a low stone wall round their dwellings to serve either as a windbreak or as as a base to support upright branches which are bit over and covered with either skins or grass for illustration. Mary leakey provided. A photograph was such a temporary shelter. Made by the oakham bambi tribe of south west africa now in namibia and not everyone agreed with. He's interpretation of this stone circle but accepting ladies version. The obvious question may be raised if she believed the structure resembled those made by present day. Nomadic peoples like the bombie that why could she not assume that anatomically modern. Humans made the old device. Don't circle one point seven five million years ago. Interestingly enough there is evidence that some of the tools from old of i gorge. Were quite advanced. J desmond clark. Wrote in his forward to the nineteen seventy-one study by mary. Leakey here are artifacts that conventional usage associates type logically with much later times the late paleolithic or even later diminutive scraper forms. All's burns a grooved and pecked kabul we note however that tools of the type found in the late paleolithic and even later are considered by modern scientists to be specifically the work of homo sapiens. Rather than homo erectus or homo habilis. How old were these like all like usually those are made out of bone one point seven five million years so then i wonder if it was like. Probably fossilized defied advance. Stone tools also turned up in the european eel at the sandwiches we might thus entertain the possibility that anatomically modern. Humans were responsible for some if not all of the old one and olympic tool. So this is what i we were just talking about like..
