"In similar circumstances yours wakes up to a video email from her teacher and they're having classes on soon those kind of creative ways to stay connected are really important I was gonna ask you what your daughter that's fine you're listening to live coverage of the mayor's news conference on the corona virus here on WG and Chicago what about it the allow the finish this demo what's the latest on that and help center you over this as we continue to say look we we see what kind of destruction that caused it I've said this before I wouldn't tolerate this in mind neighborhood and neither should the people of little village we are tolerated in the ears I think the developer has taken responsibility and rightfully so it was an honor fail we were out there more recently on this weekend and I had they taken the steps of the truck that I saw which is literally went down the entire property in the foot print and beyond where the smokestack was gonna fall fall we would have seen that now I can't erase the past but I want to make sure that we are moving forward in a way that honors and protects all the little village community what I know is that the building in its current state is dangerous it's not structurally sound and there's a lot of debris that was left from the other parts of the demolition that's dangerous and it's literally a magnet for scavengers despite the fact that they've got a high fence around the entire property I learned over the arc of this all that work they had a hundred and twenty five hundred fifty break ins even though they've got twenty four hour security so we're working with them to figure out how we can mitigate I think it's very dangerous circumstance with the building and and the debris you can take your time so we're working on working on that all right thank you this is a those are yes Sir my question is this is a question from Tamon Bradley from WGN alderman Martin wants people struggling to pay rent do do do for struggling due to the cold nineteen followed a year to pay back rent will you put your weight behind this proposal and encourage other aldermen to go along with it well here's what I know this is a challenge meeting your bills is a challenge for a lot of folks there's no question about it that's why one of the first things that we did was to stand up a two million dollar fine how to help people who are struggling with rent and struggling with a mortgage but this is a complicated problem because it's the renters to be sure or hit but so were the landlords the landlords are struggling to meet their mortgages were ultimately where we need to be is to have the banks that hold these mortgages I'll provide some kind of relief all the way down the line so you can't just solve one part of the problem and ignore the other pieces of it because I know a lot of landlords and maybe have one or two buildings if a rancher doesn't pay rent for a year what happens to those people who have to pay their mortgage they rely upon those rents as part of the revenue stream that they need to pay their mortgages so we are working on how we solve the entirety of this problem but I was also just say this I learned a lot about people through this crisis in my view is if you really want to solve problems you work collaboratively he worked constructively with your colleagues but when I learned about somebody wants to do something because now there's a press release or because I read about it in cranes or trip or sometimes it really tells me a lot about the seriousness of purpose these are serious issues we are working as a city and we have been from day one to address them because people are really feeling the weight and the burden of this but the way to do that is to make sure you understand all the people affected all the stake holders and then you work collaboratively to come up with a solution that solves the entirety of the problem not a piece of it that then has catastrophic consequences for other stakeholders all right and the last question here from another reporter this is from Charlie Meyerson man there what can you tell us what you know so far about the murders in Oak Park of Leslie Ann Jones and Thomas Johnson who is a hearing officer for the Chicago police board presided over so many high profile Chicago police misconduct cases well let me just say when I learned of their deaths I was deeply shaken Tom Tom Johnson was a really good ma'am very smart lawyer very able took on a lot of I think important work over the arc of his career I didn't know his wife as well but everything I've heard about her says she was the same kind of incredible dynamic giving and gifted a lawyer I know I don't know much yet I think the investigation is still very much I'm going and I I don't wanna get ahead of the Oak Park police or all the mayor parkway been in contact with but it was a horrific thing no one deserves to die in the way that they died and I am hopeful that those individual or individuals plural who responsible for taking the lives of these two people as such a violent way are brought to justice as soon as possible by listening to live coverage here of the mayor's news conference talking about the crown of ours the crux of the the briefing in the beginning was to address the racial disparities in the pockets of poverty in the city where health care is not delivered is equitably and they're deford Sir trying to make to solve that also talking about how all the central city workers will be giving mass to wear while they're on the job that's the latest from the newsroom this joint added to lotus now thank you Steve I am here on this Monday afternoon as you just heard two oh six we just heard from the mayor a lot to get to in the shortened show I'm gonna try to finance much as we can because there is a ton to get to one of the big under reported issues with this virus I feel all along has been the number of cases in nursing homes and today starting today I should say that number was not broken down you didn't know which cases came from nursing homes and which ones didn't if you had a loved one in a long term care facility or nursing home you possibly quite possibly probably in fact had no idea if there was one case or five cases are no cases but now starting today it's mandatory to report that data it was voluntary we heard from some of you in fact people called into the show in the past and said we didn't know we had no idea the Tribune had an excellent piece about it today to the family members are today finding out for the first time we had we had no idea at all we were pretty shocked to learn this and we want to get to that because then the other news of the when they release the data the Illinois department of health did when you look at the data listen to this we've learned that twenty three percent of all deaths in the state nearly one in four are people living in Illinois nursing homes or long term care facilities so we're gonna get to that issue in a moment here then I just want to say one other thing that is coming up you want to stay tuned for there is this debate about when to re open the economy the mayors of some small towns in Illinois wrote a letter appealing to governor Pritzker saying please let us open some of our small businesses they write will I respect social distancing will will be as safe as possible we understand that the restrictions and why they're there but we fear we won't have small businesses to reopen if we wait much longer so they want a meeting with the governor they say the big box stores are open but how about smaller stores and main street mayor Greg jury of loves park Illinois is gonna join us coming up at two fifteen you just hear the mayor talk about that issue mayor Lightfoot she doesn't believe it should be opened but this is a conversation that is ongoing this is these are things that are happening let's get back to the nursing home data and Dan Stockdale joins us he is a licensed health care exact thirty years in the industry certified nursing home administrator Dan thanks for being on WGN with us thanks thank you I appreciate the invitation so when you hear that the state is now out I'm not sure if you're really just said but nearly one in four of the deaths in the state come from nursing homes there's a lot of concern among people whose loved ones are there that not all this information was coming out you think it's kind of overdue that we're we're finding out about this kind of thing yeah I didn't overdo I I'll tell you that we were having a hard time getting data on our and so we began as an organization to compile our own data and that's the numbers are very consistent with what we were saying in our data analysis as well so I'm not surprised at the number and I'm just glad that they are finally starting to get the numbers out yeah I am too because we did we did hear from people who said that they didn't no one in particular Nancy her name was she called she I talked her on air and off air and she told me she didn't know she asked if her mother could be tested and there were there were not many tests of the reluctant to test and she said she exhibited the signs and symptoms but then when she was a confirmed case she felt it was important for other people who had loved ones in that home to know about it but that emails never went out and no contact was made isn't it doesn't seem like an important health thing to to do it does and it's it's a very important to maintain that communication between yourself and the family member as well so witty and it's okay to be calling and checking in with the directors of nursing and a lot of folks are not able to come visit but it's okay to make those phone calls talk to the director of nursing pocket social services director talk to the administrator airplanes are very full so don't take up the whole day it's certainly okay to be asking them what's going on you guys have any confirmed cases and things of that nature yeah it does seem as if people are stretch reason in these homes I certainly wouldn't want to put any more onus on on them and I know these are tough things it just feels that there is also a public health interest in letting people know when they're potentially exposed or they're in a center where they they could have that sort of exposure especially since the a number of cases seem to be very high in that population those populations and because there's so many people there in those homes who have underlying conditions isn't that isn't that also into consideration well it is and a you know this is the we had we've been saying for weeks this is the most frail vulnerable population is far less buyers is concerned so you know it's vitally important that we focus on the nursing homes making sure that nursing homes have the right policies procedures screening steps in place and that they're doing everything they can to take care of our elderly I will tell you that the the great thing is that.
