"Honestly, people don't use the term dandy enough. I really am. Well, that's look at your brain out there. You got one. Banjo. Yeah. I'm sorry. You say that. I play a fourth ring banjo. I play a tenor band. Okay. And how long have you been doing that? You know, I grew up not to damn defy myself too much. I've read one group thousand historical romance novels, and so anytime a word comes out from one of those books, I feel real excited. Yeah, I'm a bit of a dandy, so I grew up playing the cello. You just get cooler as the conversation rolls a lot. As a former, I was in band from fourth grade, up into high school. So we are in what is now a good clarinet, but tenth chair clarinet, so you know, but I was in it, and I wore a cobbler bun and I was both orchestra and marching band. Good clarinet is like, Woody Allen level, right? I don't, you know, there was always. I think that's always got worse. Really worked on it. And I was not that what chair clarinet are you? What's your name? Were you? Tenth? Oh my gosh. You were. You're looking at 11 cello number 11. No, you're not. They didn't have they didn't have a worse seat on the 11th seat cello player for my junior high school. And how long did you do that? How long did you roll? Long enough that you think I would have been better. I should have been better. Why did you why did you stay in why did you say playing music as a kid? They just made me. It was inside. I was sitting down. I switched from violin to cello so I could sit down. That's how lazy I was. Wait, you're violinists had to stand? During practice, if you practiced violin, they used to make us, they would make you stand. So I did that one time, yeah, to show you how lazy I am, the next week I was like, can I do the one where you should go? Sit down. I support that for you. The only people who stood in our musical programs played the drums, which by the way, was the move. To be the drummer, those were the coolest kids in the music program, which wasn't saying much but still. Like if I could go back. You're on break. Those big symbols are the big kettledrum. You're on break most of the song. Barely have to work. You're also on break. But when you gotta go, you better hit your one note. If you, if someone handed you a clarinet right now, they're like, look, do it. Could you do it? I could do something. It would maybe sound like I was killing a clarinet, but I could make sound come out of it. I like to think I could just pick up where I left off, but it's been a long time. Our orchestra teacher was used to be allowed to, I don't know if she was allowed to. It wasn't allowed to, but she would throw her baton at her face. That feels those are sharp at one end. That feels like you're gonna shoot someone for sure. They definitely could have lost a 9 ball, but in the olden days, no one cared. If you're at school, no one cared what you thought. Free child care. Your kid at school. That's what was happening. Yeah. No one cared and no one checked on like, hey, are they being nice to you at school? No one cared. Care they're getting nice to us in school. I had a high school history teacher who literally every single day of class every single day. We just watched movies. That's it. He didn't even try. He was not a hangover. Yeah, he was the volleyball coach. He was there for volleyball, but you had to teach a class. He did not care, and he just picked movies that were historical in nature. And so we watched a lot of Charlton Heston, and that was our program. Swear. The weird stuff we used to have to do in high school. Everybody would, everyone would be sent off to jail these days. They used to, we used to have to put up, so we had swimming in the morning. Did you guys have swimming? No. We were not apparently at a rich kid school. You had water in the ground. I went to a place called Oak Park river forest. Oak Park, that sounds fun. Okay, it does sound fancy, but so here's what we would do. Here is the morning plan at oak park river. Give us the morning routine. It's outside Chicago, so in the winter, it's like -10°. But you get there, it's like 8 15 in the morning. You would take off all of your clothes. Go to the gym area where the pool was. And you would have to get completely naked and then go collect a speedo from a bin. Like a fresh speedos that they had washed, I'm doing air quotes. For you the next day. And you would do this every day, but you had to basically do sort of like a weird promenade. Just like nude. What age are you? We're all we're high school. Oh, wow. It's like, couldn't be weirder. Yes. And then there's also like four guys who just were back from the Korean War would kind of watch you put on your speedo. And then also you had to turn your speedo in at the end. And for some reason, you didn't get to just turn it in where your towel was. You had to turn it in and then do two corners around a pool to where the towel guy was, it was called Tom the towel guy. Shady AF. Like have you ever been like, was that really the rule or? It can't have been. It can not have been. Like, if anyone said like, what are you guys doing with the fellows down by the pool every morning? It's like, great. Here's what they do. They do a quarter mile, just boners out. So then we let them and then they got to work their way back around. It was

We're getting your questions. Charlie, I live in Oak Park, Illinois, and I heard you talk on the radio show about a church that I drive by every day on my way to work. First united of Oak Park. I'd noticed their signage a proclaiming their lenten fasting of whiteness, and I was ecstatic to hear you mentioned on air. I noticed this morning, though, the sign was gone. Do you have any idea what happened? Did your show do that? If so well done. So yes, we broke the story at turning point USA. Somebody sent this to us anonymously. And it's the first united church of Oak Park, a lot of good folks in Oak Park, but my goodness. They've lost their mind at this church. And so they put up this sign where they said we are going to be abstaining from white people performing hymns that were written by white people or music written by white musicians. That four lent they're giving up whiteness. They're fasting from whiteness. Reverend John edgerton, senior pastors had the whole practice has been about love. The love of God and neighbor is not only giving something up, but taking something on said reverend edgerton, otherwise known as a left wing community activist, posing as a reverend. Just this must be loved into existence. It is the only way white people absolutely have a place in the redemption story. White people were even at the foot of the cross, they were the Roman guards. As white people, we must love our redeemer enough to put down our spears. What? That we white people are walking around with spears. He's comparing us reverend John edgerton from first united church of Oak Park is comparing white people to those that killed Jesus. As white people, we must love our redeemer enough to put down our spears. We must love our redeemer more than we love our whiteness. Trust me. I don't love my whiteness. It's a really weird bizarre thing to say. And kneel before our redeemer, who's a dark skinned man from the poor parts of town. The church also placed a fasting from whiteness sign on its front lawn proclaiming, quote, this lent, we lift up the voices of black people indigenous people and people of color. And so the next part of the statement is great because so we put this out at turning point USA and this just goes to show the power of our show and the power of turning point USA and the power of exposing evil deeds. And yes, it is evil of fast from whiteness. It's evil to care about skin color. We on this program and a turning point USA, we continue the American tradition to care about things that are invisible more than things that are visible. We care about things that can change more than things that you can not change. First united church revoked park cares more about things that can not be changed and things that are visible. The first united church of Oak Park, they care about immutable characteristics we do not. It's a big divide happening right now in the American church. So the church responds to the news story. I love this. In this case, taking something on became living into the reality of white supremacist backlash in this country. Hateful messages started after an online peace by turning point USA, that's us. And other right-wing outlets criticizing this practice. Other conservative media picked it up. The church received well over a thousand hateful messages in under a day. Now their definition of hateful, I mean, seriously, their definition is probably like take down the sign. Give me a break. This is where we actually are walking the walk of love can take you in this country today. Oh, so it's an act of love. To hate white people. Jesus knew it and blessed are those who stood up for righteousness stake..

"About this differently. We're working on various tools. Within dust passed to help employees nowhere. Their colleagues are working. But i also think there's this other really interesting new paradigm which is because we all just went to the office everyday actually didn't know where my coworkers weren't and now the the world has changed that notion of knowing well. I live in oak park. Are there any other colleagues near oak park. That i didn't realize live near me and maybe we can find a place to coalesce near oak park for our little contingency of people than all of us having to go to the city and schlepping work every day. So to your point. I mean this is all about collaboration. And it's all about connecting people. I i've always loved this sort of notion that a co working spaces like a analyzed social network and when i ran a space one day we had someone quipped to people quit the next to each other. One person quit because the space was too loud and the other person next to them. Quit because this too quiet at right. And i think it's just a testament to what people want and what people are looking for is very different but one of the things i really enjoyed about these flexible work spaces and co working spaces and the reason i got into it in the beginning. Is you work with the same people every day for the same job. Even if they're the best people and you love them deeply you build these patterns and these sort of systems in place that i think inform your thoughts and how you approach the world being in a new environment with other people. You don't really know who do things that you've never heard of and are having conversations that are totally new to you is like one of my very favorite parts of co working. "Come with us as we show you. Why Geneva should be your hometown and with a sad 6 49 is the mayor. Of Geneva. Kevin Burns. Good morning. How you doing, Mr. Mayor? Let's send. Well, how are you? I'm I'm fascinated by your political track record here. You You won. You won the election With 72% of the vote in 2005. You won reelection on opposed and again in 2009 you You ran unopposed. Sworn in for a third term as mayor. How do you get rid of all your opponents? Mr Mayor? How does that work? Well, you know your pictures in the primarily my family members, So I have dirt on them. Okay. Well, that's how it works. Works way out here in the western suburbs. Ah, little little side fact for you, Bob. If you don't mind my daughters Great great grandfather. Was the mayor of Chicago. You're kidding. No. Do it. Clinton, Craig Year 18 89 18 91. I'm not familiar with that name in Chicago history. Well, I'll tell you what you ever had up north to the water tower. He was actually the water commissioner during the great fire. 18 71. His name is on the water towers over there down here on Michigan Avenue. That's interesting. Yeah, pretty wild s O for people who aren't familiar with Geneva. How far from downtown Chicago. Are you You were 40 Miles due west. You could actually hop on the Metro West light if you like, or just cruise out one of the freeways and 40 miles from there. You're right in the heart of beautiful downtown Geneva. So you're far enough away from the lake to be maybe seeing a little peek of sunshine right now. Yeah. You know what? It's a slight peak. Exactly. Yeah, and what? Overcast. But what? What's your favorite spot for breakfast out there? Well, I'll tell you what, Amy and I are. We went. We went vegan. The whole plant based whole food about five years ago. So we are favorite place for breakfast. The cook something vegan up here at home. Then we go out and explore. But I mean, there's dozens of places for everyone. Even vegan options are available, of course, but I can name probably two dozen lovely places for for for breakfast here in Geneva. I read something about Geneva being home to more than 100 restaurants. Wow, that's true. Yeah, You got a lot a lot of choices there. And, uh, let's see you're off the Metro West Line and the Fox River Now it's really beautiful along the Fox River for people who haven't experienced that. What do you like to do? Uh, spare time wise in your area. I think the most enjoyable thing quite frankly, is to just walk. Enjoy the environment we have. We have so much open space in Geneva, not just the Fox River but also west. We have open space everywhere throughout the community Join nature. What you may or may not be aware of. Back in the day Bob Geneva San Charles became who's the vacation spot for Chicagoans? That makes sense in a second vacation? Who out this way? That's why you You have such care for the Fox River. It's trailed its natural environment. Now I know there are many festivals and special events that you have in Geneva. What about what about this summer? With the pandemic? What's gonna happen? Well, they're gonna be, uh, we're gonna be a amended as a word. They're probably not gonna be as large as they have been historically, but we are still gonna have some celebration. Has some welcome about back to normalcy as it were, but certainly not on the scale. Never used you and we attract 500,000 visitors a year. It's unlikely that will do so this year, but we're still gonna have an opportunity to Have a good time to celebrate and hopefully get together safely. Did you grow up out there? Well, I've been here 48 years, So it's pretty damn close. I moved here when I was nine. So now I just told you my age when you know where you from originally. Boarded Oak Park Really? S so so you've always been always been west of the city. Absolutely. My dad was Chicago kid went to Fenwick High School. My grandmother worked for Mayor Daley. My grandfather worked for the Tribune and They got out here because the witness relocation programs work well and as far as businesses and in the pandemic have most of your local independent mom pop places survived. I hope You know they have. It's certainly been a struggle, and it continues to be a struggle. There's no question about it. I think perhaps the greatest mistake we can make is to assume that quote. It's all over and obviously it's not. But our independent businesses, the men and women who owned them, the employees who worked there have done exemplary work. And I think perhaps the most celebratory feature is their extraordinary patience and endurance. Which continues to this day. So when we talk about shopping local I mean, now, more than ever, that mantra really makes sense. Amen to that before we let you go. I know you can't mention everybody, but you want to give a shout out to Ah! Restaurant or two or business or two. Oh, yeah. You know, I want to thank those who have not only practice You say throughout the pandemic, but also understand getting back to the community. Certainly my friend buying Galloway, who owns Libya, and G M e, a our friends over at nosh. Our friends at State Street Diner. Um they have all been extraordinarily kind to others. They're their own employees and supported those who are in the second fight as aware whether it be our healthcare providers. Another so Anyone and everyone who wants to visit Geneva and experience hospitality that we I believe we've mastered for 186 years. You're all welcome to do so. And of course, we'll have our friends from Chicago paid the bill. Spoken like a true politician of out in the sticks..

"Joining me. Virtually cameron and eric toungate from oak park. Welcome to daily detroit. Both of you thank you for letting us be here. Oak park is a community that i like to spend some time in. Keep an eye on it. Because you know it's it's a place that's just getting a lot of momentum and one of the projects that caught my eye. Recently is one called reimagine nine mile road. Can you kind of walk me through. What the ideas behind. This linear park which is just seems like a cool idea project on dining out row to redesigned nine mile and did a road diet to take planes down to three and include bike lanes and streets tapes and we also close to streets in created packet parks more percy's than the uni reimagined nine. Our road is laying off of that and adding more features. We have two blocks of linear face. The city owns in. We decided that that s use for it to enhance the street. Diet was to add many your park senior public art where people can just sit in the area and green. It's yeah you know. This project implementation began back a few years ago. I think twenty fifteen. What have you learned so far in kind of what has been the impact. Well i would say what we've learned so far is on the sears that allow the public had doing the road diet that there'd be traffic jams. All the time did not reality happen. So the traffic studies conducted fire. Were accurate we've noticed a lot. More economic development interest in the core war with a few new businesses opening code of courses. Slow that down a little bet We still see slaps hippie there and what's kind of the goal of doing a project like this 'cause oak park some other communities in the area really starting to focus more on walkability and things. I know that. I actually because of family member have actually walked dog through oak park when i was staying there for a few days with a relative of mine. And it's just beautiful and like the trees and all those other things you know what's kind of the idea behind just embracing that kind of walkability and community field. Walkability and bankability are extremely important in a community. I think more people are for that type of environment and getting more into what we're traditional downtowns and moving away from office amtrak of communities they want vibrant places at their families can enjoy and helps you bring sense of pride to our cutie and encourage new people wanna live there as well. Locate there So let's talk about the second phase. What's ahead for the stretch of nine mile between scotia and rosewood and just so people know if you're not familiar this is a west of woodward kind of drive through ferndale nine mile. You hit oak park. And you'll kind of see this kind of stuff going on what's behind the second phase. The biggest thing there is creating these additional park spaces are south bend. The community doesn't have her so that is one goal of this project is to aunts. Medicinal park space. Also just enhance the corridor over all. And i think the biggest thing bat. We're looking forward to here is currently. The city has no public art and this is an opportunity for us at that public art into the community. Whether that not with murals cultures were going to bid out to the public in review the proposals in the carpet. We're gonna place there so we hope to be a very community engaged process that our residents the love. Yeah this seems to be on the heels of a few different things. Remember eric last time you were on the show We talked about sunflowers. And the sign edge over the freeway how that played out in the intervening time. Well it's all adding to the sense of place in the quality of life in our community and also just say this that even during the pandemic people who are working from home are still looking for the kinds of community amenities that were talking about in this nine mile project having public are having things to do in and around your home is nothing new especially for a community like ours. Serving were bedroom community our objective. Is that when you come home from work in the evenings. Or if you're working from home. As i mentioned during the pandemic or beyond that You have things to do and not only do you have things to do. But they're very unique in a active things to do. And that's the mode that the thinking that we've taken on are now putting into implementation. How has it been working with the physical space there. Because i think about nine mile and i think about the places i've walked. You've got some great boulevard. Some things like that does that. Open up some design ideas for you as opposed to some parts of town that maybe are kind of restricted and packed in. I think it has opened up some in some ways. It's also been more challenging a couple of things. We did along nine mile wheat. We close to arterial streets coming into nine mile and we put pocket parks where those streets meet and that was a little bit more difficult in the sense that obviously took a lot of community input to vision that out but it actually has made it a little bit more difficult in terms of it being a linear park versus a more traditional park. There aren't very many linear park. Some very many true linear parks throughout the state of michigan. I think the most Known of all of them is probably the detroit river walk in so that adds some some complexities to it. Of course it also adds some other advantages and of course if you're a biker or who's a walker or whatever it may be of course. Those are just commonplace. Amenities that you look for. You know one linear park. I really enjoy our noth. Anyone's been over to windsor. I know obviously with the pandemic but what they've done along their riverfront. I mean what detroit's doing is absolutely great. I was actually just over at volonte park over the weekend. But on the windsor side. It's a little bit more low key and strikes me as much more for a bedroom community. And if you think about what's over in windsor there's all those apartment blocks all those other things. But what they've done on. The riverfront and windsor is absolutely gorgeous. And both of those sides kind of show what you can really do with linear park doubt about it. And there's there's a linear park travers city for another great example where people are doing unique things with the spaces they have in apart. We obviously don't have a riverfront international border-crossing to focus on but with what we have. We think this is the best use of this space in terms of activating it. Well and so. Many people travel nine mile right absolutely. So what's the timeline on this and i am looking at your patroness city page. How can people get involved with the campaign. Beds april thirtieth. Anybody who wants to participate to that age we links on our website for media and you can contribute any dollar amount from five dollars up to anything. We've had a very nice donations and we are almost half wage or goal of fifty thousand. Wow as a we have twenty one thousand. Six hundred five dollars raised so. We're looking pretty good at raising the full fifty thousand need the objective and get that grant mitch. Mdc on every dollar counts in these kinds of public improvement projects. What is the timeline. Assuming all goes well. What is the timeline for making stuff happen. The timeline for that is to hope. We begin the project this summer and before the action the snow flies. So hopefully he'll the weather will offering with us. We can get this done syria and if people wanna know more follow things though parker are doing what can people do. You can always refer to our website but we also reacted on our social media sites and our website is parked duck. And i'll be sure to grab all those links and put them in the show notes. "Today's feature. Conversation is centered in oak park. The city in southern oakland county is working to complete a linear park along nine mile road in recent years. The suburb of about thirty thousand people. It's been making a ton of improvements. I'll dive in with kim maroney and eric toungate but first a few things to know around metro detroit. Here's a quick briefing on cova cases as they continue to rise in metro-detroit now at forty two cases per one hundred thousand people per day were basically back where we were in november of twenty twenty as of this recording. there's been no rumbling. But for context about five days from the same point in the november spike there was a pause and more restrictions imposed. They closed indoor dining casinos movie theaters. And more if you didn't know there are a number of european countries that are on lockdown now too now back to hear the transmission rate or rt level in metro. Detroit is one point three meaning. That cases are rapidly. Increasing hospitalizations continued to rise as well with the thirty to forty nine year old group being an important part of that number now are positive. Test rate in metro. Detroit is nine point six percent according to kovac now that is perilously close to that ten percent threshold kida. Curbing the spread is of course vaccinations and depending where you're at different story. The state's data dashboard shows that more than thirty percent of eligible. Oakland county residents have had at least one shot however just over sixteen percent of detroiters have gotten. There's that's the second worst place in the state ahead of cass county in michigan which is often considered part of the south bend indiana metro area. The reasons are complex. What we do know is that throughout the nation. It's been harder to get the vaccine into three places communities of color those that are poor with less access to healthcare and those who simply for whatever reason do not want it important to note that although it's progress neither vaccination number. I'm talking about is close to herd immunity statewide. We had four thousand four hundred fifty. Four new corona virus cases reported wednesday with sixteen deaths that brings are pandemic totals to more than six hundred thirty seven thousand cases and fifteen thousand. Nine hundred and thirty five fatalities. A company founded in eighteen eighty three is embarking on a major expansion in eastern market. Edw growl sons they do corned beef meat and produce will invest about thirty three million dollars in two new facilities that will have a cooler freezer loading docks offices and more officials say there will be three hundred new jobs tied to the project. Incentives grants from the state and city of detroit will total ten point six million dollars. Some of those dollars are for brownfield redevelopment. The project will be located in what's called the eastern market innovations on that is an area that the market is using to expand room for more companies to build larger processing facilities. Grell was eyeing a move to georgia.

Ted McClelland from Chicago magazine and that check out Chicago mag dot com and is an interesting piece that he wrote about the geographic growth of Chicago stopping and You know if you've been to Los Angeles or if you've been a Houston I mean, those two places are sprawling. I guess. New York is, too. But New York I always kind of think of like in a different way. He mentioned the boroughs of New York. Um, but those cities of Los Angeles and Houston there's a ton of space of time of space ton of land where you could be on in both of those cities. So Chicago Doesn't necessarily have that problem, but to his point he was saying that well, look, if you're in some of these suburbs, it kind of feels like Chicago. And, um I don't know. I get that. I think to a point. Certainly. He mentioned Park Ridge. He mentioned Niles. Of course, right there. Uh, you know if you go even areas of Oak Park You kind of feel like some parts are very Chicago ish, but it's not quite. It's not quite Chicago. I think he kind of no I don't know. Your Brain on Facts
It's The End Of The World! (Again
"In the village of Giddy Shem Devon England in the eighteenth century lived a woman named Joanna. South caught southpaw became convinced that she had supernatural powers and began selling seals of the Lord essentially tickets to get into heaven which people bought. She declared that she was the woman of the apocalypse as foretold in the Bible and that she would give birth to the new Messiah on October nineteenth eighteen forty one despite the fact that she was sixty four years old. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. We are living through a more uncertain than usual time right now. I wouldn't say it's the end of the world but others might and half history is rife with people who claim to have been told or to worked out when the end of days is coming. The list on Wikipedia is twenty four page downs. And that's really only focusing on Judeo Christian. Prophecies everyone from peasant girls two months to the mathematician who popularized the use of the decimal point. How Theory Cotton Mather? The influential Puritan Minister who played a decisive role in the Salem witch trials proclaimed in sixteen ninety one that Doomsday would occur in sixteen ninety seven basing the date on events that were current to him that he interpreted as fulfillment of Biblical prophecy when sixteen. Ninety-seven passed uneventfully. Mother changed his forecast. First to seventeen o six than seventeen sixteen and finally seventeen seventeen. Mother didn't make any more between seventeen seventeen and his death in seventeen twenty eight but he was still certain that the end was near Jonas Wendell along with other adventist preachers predicted. The Second Coming of Christ would occur between eighteen. Seventy three and eighteen seventy four after the prediction didn't bear out Nelson Bar. You're of follower of Wendell reinterpreted prediction to mean that. Jesus had returned in eighteen. Seventy four but he was invisible that does make it harder to disprove all grant you then. There was mother. Shipton the witch of York a fascinating blend of historical figure and embellished character. Born Ursula South the older and a thunderstorm in a cave in fourteen eighty eight to a teenage mother who refused to name. The father mother Shipton looked every bit like the iconic which would he skin hunched posture. Hooked nose the works. She made a number of predictions all of them in verse like Shakespeare's Weird Sisters in Macbeth. She said to have predicted Henry. The eighths disillusion of the monasteries the great fire of London the reign of Elizabeth I and even possibly the invention of airplanes on the telephone but the first written version of her predictions didn't come out until eighty years after her death and some of the authors have admitted to adding to what she supposedly said. So we're not one hundred percent certain if mother Shipton really said the world to an end shall come in eighteen hundred and eighty one but we can be fairly certain that it didn't the cave in which she was born is now a tourist attraction along with the nearby petrifying well items placed in the well are said to turn to stone. And that's more of a loose interpretation than an outright fable. The water in the well has a very high mineral content and those minerals will attach themselves to anything in the water making. It look like the object is turning to stone. Bona snacked the witches in Macbeth referred to usually as the weird sisters but were originally called the wayward sisters meaning. Good women who lost their way and been seduced by the allure of Magic Doomsday Predictions. Could come from the highest offices in the land. But that didn't make them anymore. True Pope Sylvester the second game pope in nine ninety nine seat with the auspicious-sounding date of the year one thousand looming so Vesta in a number of other Christian leaders foretold the coming of Jesus at the turn of the Millennium and many people believed it like really believed there were riots in the streets. Thousands of Christians fled to the holy city of Jerusalem and many attended what was expected to be particularly interesting midnight. Mass at Saint Peter's Basilica on New Year's Eve when the morning of January first on and it was clear the world had not ended semester and the other Christian leaders revised their predictions. Have you picked up on that trend yet? If Judgment Day hadn't kicked off on the anniversary of Jesus's Birth. It must do on the anniversary of his death. So so Lester. The second declared the world would end in ten thirty three but he was already fifty four years old and sure enough. Didn't have to hear any gainsaying when the apocalypse didn't come the second time because he'd been dead for thirty years a century later pope innocent. The third had a less obvious and markedly less nice reason for his end. Time Prophecy innocent blamed the Muslims Christians and Muslims have had kind of assorted past and innocent viewed Muslims as agents of Satan to his mind. The apocalypse would occur six hundred and sixty six years after the founding of Islam. Which would put it in the year. Twelve eighty four. He too died well before he could see how wrong he was predicting. The end of the world requires perseverance. If at first you don't succeed try try again. You've got to stick with it. Like the founder of the Worldwide Church of God Herbert Armstrong along with his sons Richard and Garner Armstrong picked up quite a following even before claiming that the world would end in nineteen thirty. Six and only members of his church would be saved the Great Depression and the dust bowl probably made it easy for people to believe that our collective ticket was about to get punched Armstrong then turned his sights to nineteen forty-three where the second war to end all wars lent credence to his doomsday claims when life settled into the post war normal Armstrong amended his prediction to Nineteen seventy-two a significant margin of error. People sold all of their possessions to pay for travel to Petra in Jordan. Which most of us know as the Resting Place of the holy grail from the third and Final Indiana Jones. Movie where they would be safe from Roy Moore three which Armstrong said would be all of Europe led by Germany against the US and the UK. World War three did not in fact begin. Nineteen seventy-two or the next mandate of Nineteen seventy-five in December nineteen fifty four Chicago Tribune headline read Dr Warrens of disasters in World Tuesday worst to come in one thousand nine fifty five. He declares the doctor was just passing along the predictions made by Dorothy Martin a fifty four year old housewife from Oak Park Illinois. Martin believed that aliens from the Planet Clarion had beamed messages into her brain informing her that a. Masoud flood would soon destroy the planet. Her prophecies attracted a small group of followers including the doctor who called themselves seekers. Many of the seekers quit. Their jobs. Sold their belongings and removed any medal from their bodies which Martin said would be essential for boarding the alien ship. That would take them away. They gathered at Martin's home on Christmas. Eve Nineteen fifty five sing carols while they waited to be beamed to safety. This wasn't the first time the group had gathered for their exodus. The aliens were supposed to come on December seventeenth but didn't then the eighteenth twenty first and finally the twenty fourth. As the night of Christmas Eve wore on Martin's followers became understandably inpatient finally at four forty five in the morning on Christmas Day Martin announced that God had been so impressed by their actions. He was no longer going to destroy the earth. Nice recovery. Though Martin had few followers their experience has left a lasting legacy. The group had been infiltrated if you will by a small group of psychologists and students from the University of Minnesota led by social psychologist. Leon festinger festinger wrote about the whole experience in when prophecies fail a social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destruction of the world. Kind of a lengthy title. But we'll go with it. It was in this book that he began to explore something. You've probably heard of cognitive dissonance. That's when two disparate ideas exist in your head at the same time and you feel uncomfortable until you can find a way to make them fit somehow. Festinger observed cognitive dissonance in the seekers. Who had to repeatedly convince themselves that Martin was right even after seeing with their own is that she wasn't
