China may be the greatest radio football play by play. call ever certainly the most famous and We celebrate the fiftieth year anniversary of the game of the century. this coming saturday of course nebraska oklahoma or honored to be joined again by husker head coach former head coach. Tom osborne who was the offensive coordinator for bob vani that time. Good morning. Good back. Gary and i hope you getting along okay this morning and it's tough. It's tough this morning know. His habits is habits. Tom or really really hard to overcome. After twenty years and more this. I can take you know. I don't know that i. I don't know that i've ever heard you address this specifically Coach i'm curious. What was your day like that day. i mean we know about the game certainly But here you are. And there's more hype than they're probably ever been for a single game as number one versus number two and you're the offensive coordinator. Can you kind of take us through That morning and leading up to the game well. Obviously there was a certain amount of tension involved but in those days The bowl games were decided Earlier in the season and marry bear bryant usually had his pink lined up for a bowl by the fifth or sixth year. So you knew that That game With us one and two in the rankings. was probably going to be very instrumental in the national championship. If we were indeed the best teams and Until There was a lot of a lot of emphasis on maybe more so than would be today with the playoffs. And all that type thing which comes really at the very end of the season and conference championship games so I know it was kind of a cold day. for oklahoma and Leading real pleasant out there but it wasn't it was playable and And so i think we started a game Trying to throw the ball a little bit and having a lot of success. And so you'd think we would have been the better throwing team taghi and rogers and and Pretty pretty good passing game on the other hand you spec oklahoma to have better day running and it was kind of the reverse we We ended up running the ball really well that day. Jeff kinney at about five terribly jerseys torn off of him and it was a big load and milton to the ball. Really well against said any john henderson was fine receiver and we were smart enough to change our secondary around moving our safety to corner in our our best corner to safety which we thought we had to do to stop the the option the quarterback in the pitch and that didn't work for well so it was a little bit of topsy turvy game but Kind of back and forth and we eventually established the running game. Well and i've got to let you know the other guy down the hall that that day up in the press box. Tom was berry switzer. He was the offensive coordinator for the sooners. And he he concocted that game plan to which you refer the only regret he's ever voiced was that he didn't get the ball to greg pruitt more pruitt. They're all american only karrada ten times But you've got to be impressed with what oklahoma was doing from an offensive standpoint in that game all right who's making the who's making the decisions over there for them Well yeah i guess Coordinators are part of it but Eventually the players have to execute and the difficult thing for us. I was really the first time we felt. I guess maybe the second time and saw the wishbone but the hard thing about playing oklahoma was had really full days to get ready for an entirely. Different animal and the wishbone in terms of defense and My kissing celebrates pretty creative and always felt that you had to do something entirely different. They hadn't seen before eventually We sell them to saying. Hey we're going to play our base defense and just play it better. And i think the last time we played the wishbone. They only had maybe a hundred and fifty yards of offense three points but at that time early on it was it was always a big threat. And and they did have they put was was the best player. And of course. On that punt returner johnny's crew had johnny data right into didn't make the tackle two guys there and you'd say well johnny sort of fair caught. Johnny never fair and never did and. That's an amazing when you look at what happens today. i'd say fifty sixty percent of the punts fair caught. You know. I speaking of the defense Against that wishbone. Two things are indelible to me a lot more than to actually but one amazing the amazing performance of rich glover in that game and willie harper williams talked about the amazing discipline that he showed he said it was tough for him to stay home on that assignment because the temptation was to go out and nail this guy but he knew if he did they could get through there. I mean it was just magnificent day time. Are you going to be going down to this game. You know. I had planned to. But i've had some issues come up a little bit with With nancy health wise. So i'm stay home and watch it here. we'll give our best. I hope everything's okay. I'll do that. he bet. Yeah well i'm sure you have with your your right rich risk lover. Unbelievable remarkable twenty twenty tackles and the thing they were trying to do is which one guy tom. Brian the center and It was an all american by the way. Yeah you couldn't block recover one guy. It was impossible and and he and jacobson played well. And and a lot of guys. That lilly harper was great. But you had to be defensor disciplined rewrite because somebody had to be on the fullback. Somebody had quarterback had fish and want somebody started chasing somebody. They thought had the ball sin. You're in trouble and so it was. it was a unique style of offense wonderful memories And i've let you know what. I'm glad we're playing. I know that the teams are in different places now and nebraska's a big underdog. But i still think this'll be special tom. Thanks so much for being with us this morning. Okay thank you guys bet. Have a good one. Tom osborne here on. Kabc morning news at twenty two tackles nose guard. I've never seen anything like that. And you know the funny thing about it is about that game which spawned few a few things that maybe we didn't notice at the time. The first one was oklahoma. Started mimicking nebraska's defense. After that game they started playing a very similar style of defense. They just got a lot better defensive lineman when the sellman rather showed up and we started and of course. Tom adjusted his offense to Accommodate what oklahoma was able to do and we started mimicking what they were doing on offense. I can't believe they stopped us. I can't i should give him the ball one more time..

Texas, OU Not Renewing Big 12 Media Rights

"Today. The Oklahoma Sooners in Texas Longhorns. Appear to take the first step and leaving the big 12. Amid rumors of the school's shocking departure from the conference, the universities released a joint statement today announcing that they would not Be renewing their media rights grants following the expiration in 2025. What do you think all this means? You know, I've been just diving deep into this. Given that Baylor. Where I went to school is I have a feeling going to be left out in the cold. And all I can get to is that I'm more frustrated with Baylor for not being more proactive. Or maybe they just past 10 years. I understand that. But if you know that you're dependent upon somebody else, Yeah, you need to start changing that right? Like if your job is dependent on somebody else to success. You should try to change that. But how do you? How do you

Answering Mail From Our Listeners

"To any us i to answer questions from listeners. To editors many of you are familiar with tina jordan. Who is the deputy editor of the book. Review and elizabeth egan and editor at the book. Review our group text columnist and the author of a novel of her own called a window opens. Listen tina thanks so much for being here. Hi pal hi pamela. Thanks for having us all right. Let's take our very first question. It comes from ingeborg moran and she asks i'd like to know everyone's thoughts on the kindle. Has anyone become a kindle convert during kovic. She writes to us from pittsburgh pennsylvania. Alright tina ou. I will say this is a tough one for me because one thing the pandemic has meant for all of us on the books desk is that we're reading everything. Digitally and i have zero problem with an e reader. I actually use an ipad and not a candle. If say. I'm going on vacation but for constant everyday reading i will admit it has been a real drag i liz. I don't know if you feel the same way. But i cannot wait until the day when i'm only holding real books in my hands again. Tina i agree. I was actually a very early adopter of the kindle when it was first invented and i feel that it serves a purpose and has a place in my reading life but i feel like it is way more clinical than holding a physical book. You're missing the pge feel and the smell of the book. I have two very simple tips for anyone who is looking to weed into the world of e-readers one is to experiment with the font and find one. That feels most appealing to you. There are a few fonts on my kindle that makes me feel. They remind me that. I'm reading on screen and i have a couple that are more palatable than others. Here's my other tip. When i'm reading a book. I am an underlying her and appeared full folder and interactor which is a hard thing to replicate on the kindle. Even though you can highlight. So i put a post it on the back of my kindle and take notes that way. It's not quite as rewarding as doggy ring and taking notes in the margins but it does allow you to have the same vibe. All you actually raise an important point. Which is that on e-readers. You can increase the font size and for anyone who has trouble seeing tiny print for example. No one is in that age category around here tonight thinking of in my mother. I hope she's not listening. Shoot uses an ipad down loves it. You know because she can make the print big enough so that when she's reading in bed at night she doesn't have to have her glasses. You know i'm surprised. Neither of you is brought up for me. The controversial element of the raider experience. Which is the percentages rather than pages. I i feel like for me. That that's like the fitbit it's sort of both too much information and also not the right information. You know i feel like it would. It would take me down a very bad path. If i were to rely on things like percentages because i am finisher and a complete list in general and and i i do like to check things off and somehow that percentage thing i feel like i'd just become very focused on the numbers rather than what you should be focused on when you're reading which is in the words. Does that bother other view. Know it definitely bothers me and sometimes mind will say location instead of percent and it'll say location and then a number and that is baffling to me. I don't understand it. But i have learned how to use the go-to feature on mine which allows me to skip around a book and read the end before the beginning which i will admit i m prone to do. Oh i know. Don't ask but the other thing that i find problematic about an e reader as a as a reviewer who's who's reading a ton of books and kind of waiting a ton of books at once when i look at something on an easy reader reduces my recall like i can't remember the name of the author when i have a book in my hand i have almost a savant like ability to connect the title and the author and even the color of the spine forever in my in my memory i read. It is that that have shown this to be true. This it's a disadvantage for me. Because i can't remember what i've read and i can't place it in the same way which is also can be a good thing because it gives all book sort of an equal beginning in my mind.

Micro Wave: Why Some Fruits Ripen Faster In A Paper Bag

"Hey nerds. So today we've got eight special guest short waves, very own producer Brett Hansen Hey Brit. Hello. Hello. This is your first on air shortwave appearance and I am aggressively excited about this I. Know You are yes, it is. Your. And today we've got our latest microwave installment, you know these snappy episodes with a couple of quick signs tidbits, some listener mail, which I very much enjoy reading every morning except for mean. I picture you with Your Cup of coffee and cats just going through the mail. So you've your investigative reporting skills to work on from what I can tell is your favorite topic of all time peaches US yeah I really really love peaches Yeah. I. Don't know if you know this but I do eat one standing over my kitchen sink pretty much every day I. do know that you've told me that Multiple Times Brit actually can't stop talking about it. They're the best part of summer. But now that summer's over, I've been using that paper bag trick to get them ripe. Do you know what I'm talking about you put them unripe and peaches and a paper bag for a couple of days. Take them out will oh yeah. They're ripe I'm doing that trick all the time I'm doing that trick right now actually knew or not I have peaches from the farmers market in a bag trust me. Okay. Well, that's actually what we're going to talk about today I've been using this trick for years, but I had no idea why it works. So I wanted to find out. So today on the show, we talked to a fruit expert about why some fruits like peaches ripen faster in paperback and why others don't. And? This is shortwave. From NPR. Okay Britt. We are talking about why some fruit like peaches ripen faster in a paper bag. So who did you talk to? Yeah so I called Juan Carlos Melgar he's a professor and pathologist at Clemson University some people say what's Pamala geology the science that study for three? Yes. So matty, full disclosure I didn't know what a pathologist was before I talked to one Carlos somebody who studied fruit trees shame another thing I didn't know is just how many varieties of peaches there are many take a guess how many do you think there are? A eleven. Okay. Well, eleven is a great number. Tell, it's not right. I could tell. But it is not the right number. Juan Carlos told me that he works with almost three hundred different varieties. There's no three hundred and he says compare that to apples. For instance, a lot of people know dame's varieties apples. Gala. Readily shows or whatever. However, nobody knows varieties features. And that's because they're legal Ten days two weeks bad variety is gone. Wow. You're already in my mind but Hansen. Okay. Each facts are facts I feel like I've been disrespecting peaches up until this point and I, need to change. Okay. So what did you find out about the paper bag trick? Yes. So one Carlo says that there are two key factors to understanding why some fruit including peaches ripen faster in a paper bag. So let's start with factor number one beaches produce a gaseous horrible. It's called Italy so. That gashes hormone ethylene is a ripening hormone. So as peaches ripen, they produce a burst of ethylene. So ethylene ripening go hand-in-hand exactly. But it's not just that a ripening peach produces ethylene it also responds to it. So say, for example, you create an environment where a peaches not only producing ethylene, but it's also surrounded by it that right there is the trick to making the peach ripen faster finding away to surround a peach in the gase hormone. I. I'm sorry expect gas or boat. I. Okay. Okay. This is where the paper bag comes in right? Yeah. So you put a peach in a paper bag close it up, and then all of the ethylene it's naturally producing gets captured and starts to accumulate inside the bag which means peach surrounded by ethylene Michael Peach steam room. A. Virtuous. Cycle exactly. That's exactly it's like. Okay. There's another part of this that I thought was pretty cool to arrived impeach. Using lot of athletes could help ripening a piece that is driving yet or not the same banana. Classic example Ou Yeah. So basically, the more ethylene accumulating in the bag, the faster the fruit ripens. So Super Ripe Peach is going to help a really hard peach ripen even faster. If that makes sense personally, I like to call this fruit teamwork. Mattie I think that that's a scientific term. So Okay Br does it matter whether or not you use a paper bag or could you just put the peach in like some other kind of container I actually wondered about this too. So basically, is there something special about the paper bag and this brings us to factor number two respiration? The other characteristics of these fruits is that they have not on the peaking saving. Peaking risk creation there we spiring. Yeah fresh fruit continue to fire or breathe if you will after being harvested so. Even producing carbon dioxide those peaches need that Oxygen Hanson. If. That seal two accumulating, they're they're useless oxygen. refire this. It's going to slow down there. Got It in writing if you wanted to writing to let that go on. Okay. So something that allows like a bit of airflow or just oxygen to be coming in and out. So a plastic bag won't work neither will a tupperware container or anything else that essentially prevents oxygen from getting inside Sudas the paper bag trick work for other fruits too. So it works for some but not all peaches, bananas, tomatoes basically fruits that ripen off the plant after they've been picked. Those are the ones that you can pop into a paper bag. Got It wow Brett Hansen. I. Have Learned so much

Is This The Best Thing to Ever Happen to Siege?

"UBI soft decided to shove in the reveal panel for seizures newest operation. Shadow legacy hailed as being one of the most significant quality of life updates. The game has ever seen shadow legacy is quite frankly the breath of fresh air that siege not only needed but deserved the headliner of course was the games newest operator. The difference is that for the first time ever ubisoft decided to round out sieges roster with a brooding bass from an already existing franchise. Now, his call sign is zero, but if you're a fan of splinter cell he Sam Fisher. You should know better than me off. Next they drew the curtains back on something that the siege community has been waiting forces might was knee high to an exothermic charge a shelly. Things we wanted to improve was the objective making it a bit more fair and attack, and on defense making it a bit more interesting. The way you take the math now is completely different than before long has shelly distinction of being arguably the most dog shit map and ranks. It wasn't so much that it was actually the worst as it was that it's somehow made it through years of scathing criticism. Unscathed from tower and Favila to skyscraper fortress and both iterations of Hertford base. Nearly every one of the truly awful maps in the ranked pool has at some point been crushed by the communities incessant and altogether warranted winding. But not chalet at least until now honestly, it makes me kind of emotional Dec-, Chalet finally get clapped. It feels like the end of an era. What are we going to complain about now? Right. Outback putty outs might that said ou did finally bring map bands into ranks. Now, I may not be able to decide exactly what I WANNA play which to be clear is crucial to preserving the competitive integrity of ranked but at least I can have some say in the matter since for a while there, it felt as if queuing into ranked was just online gambling, we would like to keep the agency to the players to to influence what maps they are fleeing or maps they don't want to play. This will reduce the frustration of the player who doesn't find a play desert map and And also can even lead to sometimes. Toxic behaviors of fridge quitting next is not only one of the most exciting changes but perhaps the most unexpected, a literal overhaul of the weapon sight system. First of all worked introducing two new sites, a new red dot. In holographic site. We are also bringing to new scopes. Now, if you're a non e cog user like me who slaps the holographic everything simply because you hate it marginally less than the red dot and the reflex, you're going to be one happy camper not only have they added four new sites, but they've made them super customizable like seriously I'm still trying to figure out how to convert my sensitivity with those new sights and scopes. We're also bringing in more cassation. You will be able to customize the sensitivity of each of those level. We are introducing the accessibility tab in option news. So this will be the last out that you see when you open this, you will have plenty of choice colors of your radicals. Now, for a ton of people, this is a massive deal not only have ubisoft made weapons sites more personalized at a whole bunch of accessibility options, colorblind mode probably being the most significant. There's still a ton of balancing to be done around this of course, but that's the great. Thing about virtually all of the changes that Ubisoft as implementing, they're taking loads of feedback. So seriously get on the test server see what you like and don't like and make yourself heard

"Hey. What's up and welcome to craft. Hang out I'm. ELISA CAPITAIN I'm Jesse Cats Greenberg. And I'm Lou Thatcher and let's hang up. Loop Lee. Now we're not gonNA, she's on mute. She wasn't. Here. Stupid. I. Wish I had a cow bell or something fun like a slide whistle. Lou. We've got to. Invest. tweets we. GotTa we gotTa have old school sound sound makers in the attic. We have from my own, Omega the nineteen in the nineteen fifties. They had these like New Year's Eve noisemakers. Those would have been great. was. Groggy. From there like the sound makers that. Yeah. Fun fact all right. Everybody. Last year, as you may remember, Jesse and I attended the makers conference craft -cation in California. And we met so many new friends. So one night, there was a bit of an east coaster meet up. and. I met a really cool crafter and fellow podcast with a show called studio seventy eight podcast, and she is fabulous and finally hanging with us right now. So please everyone. Let's give a warm craft hanging out. Welcome to New Shea Snow Welcome. So excited to be on your pie gas. You guys. Interviewed so many amazing guests on like I feel like honored. Show big time. Stop. So, let's just start off with the basics. Can you tell our craft? Reno's a little bit about who you are and what you do? Absolutely, my name's initiates now been a crafter for life since elementary school. My mom is a crafter to end up going to school for graphic design and my nine to five is billy me dealing with you know designers and web designers and all of that good stuff. Stuff. But on nights and weekends I, just loved to podcasts. Do My side hustles and I've had many many side hustles through the years. But I like making stuff just creating stuff and I'm just like you guys. I just love talking to people in sharing their stories and inspiring women to like pursue their passions be at full time or part time or all the time. So yeah, that's me in a nutshell. So. That podcast, you get to have lots of conversations with creatives and how does that inspire you? Oh. My goodness I mean, you know sometimes I feel like when I get off of an interview with him, like I need to step it up. Just. Wait a minute like, but it inspires me because you can throw around ideas because a lot of times you know people tell me like what marketing tips worked for them or how they ended up making connections in in order to get their Khumbu show line off, you know just started or maybe how they weren't. Initially, artists didn't go to school for design. But now they're like selling design in the narrow inspiring people to like just do what you love. Love in. So for me, I, feel like with each guest. I just pick up like a little tip a little trick, and it just inspires me to want to do more. You know some, that's super rats. I feel the same way with some of our guests. But okay, who's your favorite guest and Y ou? That's that's a hard one. That's a heroin. So if if any gas listened to listening to this and I don't name, you don't get offended. But I actually had her on for a second time. Her name is Nicole crowder. and. She's in the DC area with knee to, and recently she's actually just blown up but the pillow one. Yes. Mention Pillow, right? Yeah. Because she she does the meditation pillows and you know she first started out where she was, you know doing upholstery and teaching people how to upholster their old furniture in an her story. You know she talks about like working a nine to five. Then trying to do her love full-time, it didn't work out, went back to a nine to five, and then she started again when I first interviewed her and man she like learned from all the failures and then took what she learned and she's just being going going going and. And even when I interview her few months ago is wow. So just talking to her, I was so inspired, I love seeing her Kinda like blow up the last couple of months, and even how she did the meditation pillow, she initially was just giving them out for free because of cove nineteen everybody was going through a hard time and she was like, Hey, pay what you can, you can't pay anything. I'll I'll give these to you right analysis set, and this has become like heart of her business. So yes, she's like amazing.

And I have to spell that website because I want to be sure that people understand the the joke in the. Idea of what it is, but it's. Guay as in Uruguay and you are somebody who has written guidebooks about it right a website about it and you've lived in Uruguay for twenty years so I feel that Guru. Guay seems like an appropriate. Definition of what you do. And it also means that people stop confusing Uruguay Paraguay. Okay excellent. which is the bane of Uruguayans lives sure we actually do not have a show on Paraguay, and it's not for lack of trying, and I'm trying to line up for next week, so so hopefully we may have won back to back and then talk about the difference, but we're not talking about Paraguay today. We're talking about Uruguay which is not how the Uruguayans Sat, but we'll get into that. Karen, why should someone go to Uruguay? Never two types of people that come to Uruguay. They're all the type of people that have been everywhere. And, so they looking for the last off the radar destinations to go to and when they arrive, they'll love to say after I am the only person that I know. That's team to Uruguay so that on one hand and then on the other hand. People who do their research? They are interested in going to Latin America. They do their research. They looking for a safe country, especially as so female travelers for example than King. South America they all googling, and then they've like. Hey, there's this small country that's that between Argentina and between Brazil, that just seems to have all of these amazing statistics of development, how is this and then they look at it more closely and they discover that not only. Only, is it a progressive country and it's been a progressive country for hundred and fifty years with complete separation of church and state written into the Constitution the kind of country where women were given the vote well before places in Europe's of where the eight hour day has been in place for over hundred years, and then the look annul say hey, and it's also got amazing beaches and from what I can see. Nobody goes those beaches and it's got. Wine and how come I've never tried one of those wines? And then you know when they start, and they'll really looking into the find my website, et Cetera. Then they'll go. Oh, my God. It's got all this amazing world class live music, and I go to these shows and be up next to an amazing musician, and it won't even cost me ten dollars, and then somebody will say the beef is just amazing. Then somebody's like, but I'm a Vegan, and it's like, but now you could even get good vegan food in Montevideo, so yeah I mean basically. Laid back small by South American standards. It's very large compared to a European country, but it's small enough to be able to get around, and it's developed, and so it's kind of like a good start. A country when Latin America is consumed. It's not in your face. Excellent and we did mention that I'm pronouncing this Uruguay and we talked about this ahead of time, because that tends to be the English pronunciation. If I was from there, I would say it how. Do. So without ooh guy. So when you can't people on the football terraces, football's huge in Uruguay and you'll hear people saying ou y Ou do which sounds totally tribal, and you think about it. Which is Kinda funny?

If we can mobilise around a pandemic, what next? Meet two revolutionaries already flouting the rules

"You've said at one point that you think. Weist is beautiful. This zero philosophy is in a sense in practice for you. Isn't it one thing really like my life is just one big experiment you know. We had all sorts of experience. Guy On knock Ou- out offcuts of Broccoli with given to a Guy. Campbell had crickets growing. And he's and he's building and and there was a transaction. We paid him for the crickets. And what did the cricket stay ate the Broccoli yes. I'm quite obsessed with a nutrient density as well so fat soluble vitamins. How do you get all your vitamins? And crickets are a great source of that. And then you know. There's a lot of food that can be composted what about intercepting it. Before it gets composted and getting the most out of out of them and yeah we had them on the menu and we roast them and look like really a little bit like prawns in a sense. It's whatever you garnish them with. So we had salt Bush dehydrated and then mixed with salt and pepper and then some kelp dehydrated. People loved it. Okay so almost no waste zero. Yeah I can honestly say that we had zero waste and even the table was made from reconstituted plastic that came from Adelaide which company that makes bump recycled bumper bars. And we Lebron's I love the fact that out rubbish bins because there wasn't a rubbish bin in the place that's right. Yeah was any of these economically viable. I mean when I think about the restaurant and food industry. It's all about cost cutting isn't it? Food costs a very low but me because very hard. Because you're making butter from scratch making your grinding your own flour to make bread. You were making money yet. We were and then headed the council respond to you. How did regulate is and the Health Department released on? Ta The interesting thing we saw was counseled loved it and support it but it was relying on an invisible imposter. A Korean investment compost machine which took one hundred kilos plus of waste a day and would through bacteria and hate. Turn that into ten percent of volume pretty much overnight so this is like a loop yes. I would take it back and put it on my phone and grow more food. That was that was the idea. Originally four really beans and my goal was to get all the surrounding cafes to supply as well. I wanted to get that whole line way. Basically organic waste free and at just over one hundred twenty miles. It went on for years and Indian I just had a full and then it just got to a point where the threaten the V. Cat and my lease was up and decided enough's enough is enough. I it needs to be on wheels because it's crown land so wheels on it but then you've got it on wheels but it's plugged into the wall so it's technically building just went on and on and on and people at the city will argue that. It's not the case but I went to so many meetings own it went on for so long the Iraqis at the best year yet so it was just a wonder two. We've got a very different men now. I wonder if I would open it today. I think sally would be very different. And make sure that the people down and it wasn't their fault. Either this is like a law. That's one hundred years old. You go at bureaucrats but food safety is a wonderful thing. I'm mighty glad that I don't risk my life. Well I probably do. But you know the bugs extensively. Don't get me and don't kill me thank penicillin for that or thank medicine for that. All thank food safety laws and regulations that so these things are set up to Cape as well and healthy as well. The for the right reasons. I mean the reason why faces in European killed people in the during the gold rush. The contaminated water was killed people. There's a reason why these laws exist. Yes if you want to go carbon and look out of your lovely hotel room that you're staying in at at the river flowing underneath and the kids playing in it and then guide hospital. You'll find out that about half the hospital. Bids are filled with children. Who have drunk the water and the system doesn't work what we call the great centralized system of taking water from well outside the city using it and getting the pathogens as far away from the people as possible has worked for a very long time. So it's a good system but it. It's not a sustainable system anymore. It was a great system when it was invented. It's no longer a great system. The laws about keeping the pathogens and the chemicals away from the people still great laws. Yeah we just have to reinvent here we do it so you want a radical rethink of how we think about waste about how we think about water. How we think about sewerage. What would you like to see done differently? And why I believe we could have enough water in the city for twenty five million people currently when we get to eight million. We're going to have to build a new diesel nation plant. We have taking salt water and making it. Fresh is very expensive way to do it and it. It perpetuates the model that we will go and find new water rather than fix up the water that we pollute every day and throw away. The problem is that we would need to exploit that. We would need to move to a distributed model. Not Unlike a an energy model an engine model would say we'll generate half my electricity in my house and it might not be the most efficient thing to do might do it at a precinct scale and dealing with wastewater is not something I would recommend the public does however at a precinct scale. We could create a new suburb was sustainable. In terms of its water us so we have a wastewater treatment plant and WOULDA treatment plant. That are the same thing so it would just be a water treatment plant. It would take at polluted. Water would take watering from sources. That may or may not be polluted and in Australia. We spent a lot of time protecting those sources but around the world on average we still use that model in the sources on predicted working Sarabhai or any new Asia with river that supplies the water for the city is twenty times more concentrated in wastewater than what we dispose of this wastewater. Wow here and yet die. Beehive as though it's a clean water source in terms of the purification process if they just accepted that distributed model it said it is polluted wastewater with clean it up as though it was wastewater. Let's do it properly. Let's produce gripe water in in actual fact. That city could change very radically if they try it as the centralized piece. It's very difficult. You've got to build huge sewage. You've got to build reservoirs you've got to build a whole range of things if you do it. As a distributed system you could actually stop tomorrow and so this model in a Harvard sense for a Melbourne. Where new suburbs could be like that but for other CDs with his saying. We're GONNA put in sewage system. I say why would we do that? I mean th th thinking about that Indonesian example. You climb that we can process. We produce water that is cleaner more pure in a sense than tap water if I look at the waters of the world and we do that for a living and I look at what we can produce out of recycled plant currently in Antarctica by any test chemical biological any taste. You WanNa do. We are far cleaner than any tap water in the world

"Mechanization of textile production as you know what really kind of signal the beginning of the end. For many of these handcrafted industries like lace knitting and simple sewing because these things increasingly transitioned to being made by machine and the latter two are the means by which the majority of people socks were saying sewing and knitting That's how most people socks and hosiery were made for centuries upon centuries and we just want to say that we've received numerous requests to do an episode on knitting. But I think you and I kind of intimidated by this topic. I know it's a huge. I mean it's just a giant giant topic. Yeah knitting and there's actually entire podcast just about knitting. Yeah it's very true and and just diving into this topic as you know just for this past week or two. It's very clear that this could be an entire. The history of knitting could be its entire podcast because its existing cultures around the world for hundreds if not over a thousand years ancient Egyptians appear to have been some of its earliest practitioners. I guess there's a there are extent I don't guess I know. They're extent knitted socks dating to the third or fourth century. Ad So well they also at the Vienna have really helpful instinct quote unquote history of knitting essay. I think we'll probably post a link of that somewhere. And they tell us in this essay that there is evidence of knitting goods being produced and circulated in Europe from the fourteenth century on so knitting was used in the production of men and women's hose at the time and we have to remember. We're not talking pantyhose. They were not fully fashioned. They did not have a crotch. These are two separate garments one for each leg and foot and as we can imagine and I'm sure many of our listeners who knit can relate. Haning hose was a labor and time intensive process. So you would think that people might have been a bit relieved when the English clergyman William Lee invented the first mechanical knitting machine or stocking frame as it was known the sixteenth century when he created it but alas they were not they are actually quite pissed well and like with many modern technical innovations. This is all had to do with the fact that many people's livelihoods were depending on the old way of doing things right so in this case the hand niggers the knitting industry exactly and so when lease machine that had stockings were presented to none other than Queen Elizabeth. The first herself she rejected them for this very reason. She reportedly told him quote. I have too much love for my poor people who obtain their bread by the employment of knitting to give my money to Ford invention that will tend to their ruin by depriving them of employment and thus making them bakers and from this moment on lease stocking frame and its subsequent evolutions. Were incredibly controversial. You just have to look at the protection of stocking frames act. Seventeen Eighty eight which rabbit hole people go. It's fine and the destruction of stocking frames act of eighteen twelve to realize that people wanted these machines. Gone that go away. They would not lease machine might represent one of the first examples of mechanization of textile production. But it would absolutely not be the very last you know. His invention was first major stage. In what would become the textile industries wide revolution that transformed the ways at textiles and dress reproduced. To this very day and these some of these other inventions include devices such as the cotton gin the card loom and ultimately the sewing machine so these machines like so many textile innovations of the industrial revolution. They would transform the industry but they would also displaced thousands of workers in the process and by the end of the Eighteenth Century. Lease stocking frame was being adapted to produce lace. But it would be John Heathcote. Bob Monette machine that is credited with perfecting it. Heath Coats machine produced plane net lace which we might refer to as tool today. April this is where stocking production and technology begins to go way over my head. I can guess because we have a ton of like textile trade industry publications in the collection at fit and they have like all the machines and diagrams and scientific information mean that this is like hardcore science. We're talking about. Yeah and there's a lot a lot of innovation happening in the knitted hose industry in the eighteenth late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries so it was a bit overwhelming and you know this because textile and specifically stocking production was incredibly integral to the British economy economies of the world over so there are these highly detailed reports about its development throughout the nineteenth century about the development of knitting technologies and netting technologies and there are a lot a lot of developments as April mentioned in the eighteen forties. Commissioner was appointed by Queen Victoria to report on the State of framework knitting industry and he produces a densely packed. Sixty five page report. Sixty pages complete no with not only the history of the knitting industry but in the country but also a quote list of the various kinds of machinery made use of in manufacturer of hosiery and lace with the names of Inventors From Fifteen Eighty Nine Aka. William Lee. We just spoke about two eighteen forty to eighteen forty three the present day so needless to say by the beginning of the nineteenth century the list which spans hundreds of years at this point was quite extensive and includes everything from lease stocking frame and Heathcote Bob an ATM machine to numerous others including casts quote machines for Lang. Hair and Jose remade wigs. I think I I think I need to know more about this and even eighteen. Oh three a fishing net machine but apparently it's failed being made by fishermen cheaper than by machine at this point so I guess the point would really trying to drive home as that lace and lace net where being machine made in the early nineteenth century and by eighteen forty five. There's a journal. Being produced by Pennsylvania's Franklin Institute and they reported on the modes quote of Work Fabricating Lace and Framework Knitted Manufacturers introduced from foreign states and this included machines for round fingered gloves from Madrid in Spain. Figured Work Shawls and quote unquote nodded hose without seems from. Leone and Barcelona and a quote cylinder particular machine for making fancy net hose and that came from a sound sturdy little bit. I think I'd take layers a needle. Okay okay but still just say but these these were not fishnet nets right. They're not for catching fish or fish. Net Hose No. They're not and I'm at but I am actually happy to finally share things to these evolutions and laze technology and eighteen eighty nine. We find the very first use of the term. The actual term fishnet in Harper's bazaar in relation to women's dress and they write the fashionable diesel returned from Paris bringing down with many new features gowns of India soaks Chinese crepe a fish nets and leases. But I did not find the use a fish net in relation to hose or stockings until over twenty years later in their nineteen twelve fall fashion number the trade publication dry goods reporter reported on a quote. Black Vallejo's of pure silk in a fish net pattern but they assure the readers at the hose were not intended to wear next to the skin but to produce novel effects when worn over white or colored hopes so from the very first introduction of fish net hose into women's fashion. We are already seeing these associations with eroticism. Yes you know. And they're kind of scared of that association right because they assured their readers again that quote. The new fishnet hose that we illustrate in this article has been shown to newspaper representatives. And some of them have used it as a subject of humorous articles. Conveying the impression that it was to be worn next to the skin. You know so this erotic potential of this garment is literally illustrated in this article. There's kind of the irony of it because they have this woman modeling this novel. Hosiery and April. We see her ankles. No what are we GONNA do. Candle shock and awe article continues on quote. The hose may never become a big seller on the market but the effect produced by them. Is Novel any store? Having at least a single pair of them for exhibition purposes could attract unusual attention to their hosiery department. So that's hilarious. There were basically like saying Ou. Come look at these scandalous stockings. You don't have to buy them. We're not really selling them right right. And I mean. It remained a novelty throughout the teens. Basically until nineteen twenty and this is where we see a more widespread acknowledgement of what the dry goods reporter calls the quote Unquote fishnet effect. In

Tough Management Decisions In Times Of Crisis

"Just to be clear. It's locked down here in Malaysia. As in people sort of encouraged to stay at home but of course the lockdown also means the shutdown and that means a lot of businesses shut down as well and certainly a lot of Ou- partner hotels have already closed. I think all of them here. In Malaysia of certain shutdown the spouse at least a number of other countries around the world have been doing the same of course and a lot of people lockdown globally. Now the interesting thing for me I guess is dealing with with all of the staff issues. That happen around that because we've go people across seventeen countries we operate in. We've got staff working away from home stuck on remote islands in the Maldives and these kind of places They're on lockdown. They can't necessarily get home some want to get time. Some can't get home and we're now being told by a number of our resorts that only some resorts that they potentially going to close for a couple of months now not just for the two weeks or for even the month they closing for maybe two or three months whether that's because the businesses low because they've decided to now do a major innovation and so we've got situations facing now in multiple countries where we've got a bunch of stuff over the that don't need to be there anymore. But they can't necessarily get home and honestly all all day. Today is pretty much being spent on those conversations and those discussions and the one thing I've realized is that whereas we always like to make a decision that is universal as a company as much as possible so that we have a consistent decision across our company. It's kind of impossible at a time like these and even today just now I was talking with with the folks about how we're GONNA handle in boulder operation and the situations in each island. Actually a little bit different. Each resort is a little bit different and so whilst we can try and have a regular consistent themed policy across the Board. There's no guarantee that's applied. Everybody so I think the one listen. That is really coming to me today. Out of this crisis in terms of dealing with it from a management point of view and a staffing employment point of view is that you've got to make one decision at time and you've got to make it based I think on the individual circumstances that present you know. We always liked to obviously try plan months in advance. We can't do that right now. We're talking about. Can we send people on unpaid leave? We don't want to do that. I know some companies. A lot of companies have to do that. There's no choice at some point way. Probably going to be faced with that too if this goes on much longer but right now what assigned to people. Just use up your annual leaving your vacation. Time those kind of things at least you kind of getting paid for the next couple of weeks at least and then hopefully in a couple of weeks time. We have more clarity about what to do. Because the problem we're facing now is trying to make a decision about what we do today. And then what the knock on impact event is going to be in two weeks three weeks three months and of course it's impossible so I think the one message for those of you at the company and business decisions my advice would be. It's each individual. Circumstance has to be assessed so if you've got multiple businesses across multiple regions then you make each one an individual case and you know if you've got multiple countries involved like I have again. I think you've just got to treat each country as its unique set of circumstances and decisions and make the decision that you need to make today for what you can see ahead. So you know. You're on lockdown for two weeks. Make a decision based on those two weeks only. Don't worry about what happens. When the hotel opens in two weeks because it might not have been into wait it might open to eighty percent occupancy. Probably not it's going to open to twenty thirty percent occupancy so make the decisions today that you can clearly for which you have as much reasonable information you can. You'RE NOT GONNA get all the information to make a decision right now. You've got to make the best decision. Can you also gotta be prepared to change that decision tomorrow? Potentially which is the tough beat because we made decisions today that I've gotten novel of confidence that they're going to be in place in at least two weeks and then they might hold out for the next couple of days but then in a couple of weeks time they might change and that's not even talking about the financial reality yet. I mean at some point like old companies. We run out of money right. I mean at some point if the money's not coming in and we keep spending it. Something's going to have to give so right now. We're making decisions the best that we can do based on what we know is happening today and what we know is going to happen over the next week or two weeks. If we know we're not gonNA assume and we certainly not going to try and make decisions based on a two three month. We we have to make decision based on what we know today so that would be my advice for you. They're trying to make business decisions now. Easy decisions to make right decisions to be made right now. You can just make the best decision you can or that is today. I do thank you for your time and we'll be back again tomorrow.

The Greedy Dog

"Greedy dog once upon a time there was a greedy old dog named Bailey. Every bite of food every scrap of snack every bit of bone. He got he guarded jealously he'd bark if they looked growl if they came near and bite if the barking and growling didn't work he lived in a busy town and his owner was a butcher so he never lacked for good chunky bones to chew every morning he got a fresh one and he'd spend his day eating the meat and marrow until the sun set behind the trees. You'd think with such easy access to bones. Bailey would be generous but unfortunately it was actually exactly the opposite. The greedy old dog never shared not even once he would take days bone from his master along with a few heads scratches and then go into the alley behind the shop and Choo Choo Choo. It was a fat and lazy life which suited the old dog just fine until it didn't. It was a day like any other. Bailey had gotten his beef bone from the butcher and brought it out back to eat however he only got a few Thompson before. A stray cat happened by. She was tatty and orange with wild whiskers and zigzagging white stripes. She had a ball of yarn in one PA that she was carelessly batting back and forth. Bailey immediately started to bark but the cat jumped up on top of a chain link fence where she was well out of the dog's reach and knew it. Hello dog she purred easy with all that barking. Mister Tough Guy. She prowled closer one shaggy paw at a time. Yarn Ball stringing behind her. Tell me what is it that you have there? You'll better keep on walking sister. Bailey growled cradling. The meaty bone protectively between his paws. This is my bone. I don't share. The cat crept closer walking gracefully along the Metal Tube. That topped the fence. She sniffed the beefy bone on the air and her wild whiskers twitched and bounced suppose instead it was hours. She said licking her lips. Her tail swayed and curled behind her. Like a Fuzzy Orange Pendulum. Keeping a hungry time. I've seen you out here with bones before surely you could share a little. No never not ever. Bailey growled Max my bone and I need it all. Go Chew Your Yarn. Oh surely you could spare just a bit. She said it's been a few days since I've had a good meal. She arched her back and sure enough under all that tatty orange for she did look rather skinny. That didn't overly worry Bailey. Though as far as he was concerned that was her problem. His problem was finding a place to enjoy his treat without being bothered with a final withering. Bark Bailey picked up the bone and marched out of the alley. He marched down the street and he marched through a parking lot and finally found a quiet place in a vacant lot. Surrounded by plywood fencing. The grass was long and soft and full of bugs. But that suited Bailey just fine. Finally I can eat my bone in peace. He said and began to GNAW. There were a few minutes of gnawing just some real good quality gnaws but before too long the greedy old dog found himself interrupted again. Why am I stars and Garters? Is that an old bowl. I smell my fine sir. Came a voice from a nearby garbage. Can Bailey started barking until tubby raccoon hopped out of the can and scampered up onto a nearby dumpster? His body was all heavy roles and bright. Eager is now now now. My good man he said no need for all the commotion high was merely enquiring. As to whether you'd be interested in sharing that big media bone with a fellow enthusiast merits my boat and I don't share Bailey growled. Now you keep on moving you shonky. Trash Panda. The raccoon put a finally fingered hand to his chest. Trash panda good sir. I'm sure you know that is a mortal insult Mike Kind. Surely you must have misspoken. Surely you our garbage in your ears. The greedy dog wolfed by said what I said. And you're lucky. I can't climb up that dumpster or I give you what trump. Bailey stood taking the bone in his mouth and stocking away. Why would no one leave him alone? All he wanted to do was chew is beef bone in peace. Apparently that was too much to ask for. Though he marched out of the vacant lot and marched through a pleasant park. He marched right up to a quiet little pond where he finally found a peaceful spot by the Water. No more interruptions. He said it's time to eat. He began to chew happily gnawing the bone with abandoned but before too long the greedy old dog found himself interrupted once again. Wow what a treat tame a plucky voice usually we only get stale bread around here to exasperated to even Bark Bailey. Turn to look at his latest interruption. It was a Chubby duck floating on the water nearby. She had a playful smile on her beak and feather that stood straight up at the back of her head making her look just a little silly. This isn't a treat for you. Bailey growled it's my bone man. I don't share. Are you sure? The Duck said her feathers fluffing. I could trade you some stale bread. Who or some stale bread. And if I look around I bet I could even find some stale Brad. Bailey just looked at her eyes narrowed not into stale bread. The Duck said. Let's okay Let me think I have something else. Oh Oh what about some Stale Bread Bailey side? This place wasn't going to work either. He thought briefly about splashing into the water to chase the duck but he'd never been much of a swimmer and it just didn't seem worth the effort instead. He picked up his bone and marched away further into the Little Park. He didn't make it far this time as he was crossing a footbridge over the pond. He caught sight of another dog. It came out of nowhere. Big and shaggy. It was all of a sudden right in front of him. Of course it must be after his bone enough was enough so then the greedy old dog did what he did. Best he barked. Unfortunately the other dog wasn't a dog at all but Bailey's own reflection in the water and when Bailey barked. He forgot he was holding his bone. Raw No no no. No he cried but it was too late. The bone fell bounced off the edge of the footbridge and splashed into the water. Bailey fell to his belly and pod the pond but it was no good. The water was too deep. He couldn't reach not even when he stretched as far as he could. Oh have a little accident. I've had accidents before one time when I was just a duckling I wet the pond. Ou don't tell anyone though. Bailey groaned that annoying duck was back the duck. Your secret is safe with me. He said watching her float across the peaceful pond. Say Do you think you could dive down and grab that bone for me? I die for still bread all the time. Here I go. Oh wait a minute I asked you to share and you said no and now you want my help. I'm just I'm confused. Yes that is what happened now. Go get my bone and will you share. If I do know love course not. Bailey said offended. She would even ask well. Then why should I help you? Matt Question Took Bailey. By surprise he thought about it for a minute. And then a minute more finally. He decided the duck wasn't really all that big and he could probably share a little more. Okay fine he said if you help me get the bone file. Share it with you. The Duck flapped happily. Oh Great. That sounds even better than stale bread. Here I go. She dove under the water and then came up again. A minute later without the bone. Where is it oh it's too heavy. She said I can't lift it with my beak. If only I had clever hands like the humans. Oh Bailey wind and laid his head on his paws. He thought for a moment and then realized he knew someone with Clever Hans. Wait here he said I'll be right back. Okay I'll wait here. I'll be right back. I'm a dog whistle. The Duck said happily belly wasn't sure that she got it but he didn't want to waste any time. He ran back to the vacant lot and found the raccoon digging through the dumpster. Pay Their Raccoon. Bailey called. I don't suppose you'd come and help me with those clever pause. The raccoon popped out of the dumpster. A banana peel stuck to his forehead. Oh No it's raccoon. He said what happened to trash and the old dog blushed. He had been hoping the raccoon had forgotten about that. Why had he been so rude? What was he thinking? But he knew what he'd been thinking he hadn't wanted to share not a bit not a bite and now he was getting what he deserved. He just hoped it wasn't too late to make amends. I'm I'm sorry Bailey. Said my shouldn't have called you Dach- I was greedy and I was rude. The truth is I lost my bone in the pond and I need help getting it out. Oh so you come crawling back to me said the Raccoon. Lacing his clever hands over his tubby belly well old. I don't see why should bother myself with your affairs. Now if you helped me all share the bone daily said you can split it with me and the duck. He quickly told the story of the duck and the water and the beak. That couldn't quite lift the bone as he told it he found himself laughing little. The duck had a certain charm and he thought maybe he wouldn't mind sharing quite so much as he thought. Oh a morose tail indeed. My good man said the raccoon. I'd love to help but I'm not much of a swimmer. Self Bailey felt his heart sink but then the raccoons stood tall holding up a finger. But but what? I think I could still help with clever Paul as I can tie a loop and the duck and dive down and wrap it around the bone and then you can pull it out of the water. That's actually brilliant. Bailey said impressed. Oh but I don't have any string do you? No I'm afraid not my good sir. The Raccoon said sadly I guess the bone is lost to us forever? Well said the dog. Maybe not meet me at the pond. I think I know where to get some string. The raccoon pat it off to the pond and the dog went back to the alley behind the butcher shop. Hello he called when he arrived cat. Are you still here? Silent as a shadow the tatty orange cat appeared on top of a nearby awning. She watched him suspiciously batting the ball of yarn back and forth between her paws. What is it? Are you trying to tease me with your bone? More she purred listen. Bailey said finding that apologizing wasn't so hard once you got into it. I'm sorry for how I acted earlier. I was greedy. I was so so greedy. The truth is I've had a tough afternoon. I lost my bone in the pond but then I made friends with a duck who loves stale bread and I think with a raccoon to even though I called him a trash. Panda Okay we have a plan but we need your help. He explained about the duck in the raccoon and the pond and the string. And why should I help you? The cat asked flexing her claws. Joss because you apologized because you can share the bone with US Bailey said and then he went on inspired by notch us this bone by a newborn every day. And I'M GONNA start sharing with all my friends. You you WANNA be my friend. I was greedy and it cost me. He said my idol. Learn the hard way that driving. Everyone away means you don't have to share but it also means you're all alone by a one that I I'm sorry if you can forgive me. I'd like to be your friend even if I don't let you use my string Bailey. Thought for a moment. Did he just want to be friends for the string? With a surprise he realized that no he wanted to be friends for more than that running around making a plan and talking to these other animals weird as they might be was the most fun he'd had in years. Why don't deserve the strings? So I understand if you don't WANNA share it either way. I'd still like to be your friend and I'll have a newborn to share tomorrow. Well in that case said the cat leaping off the awning with the ball of yarn. Let's go get that bone. Bailey barked again but this time in excitement they ran back to the pond and found the raccoon and the duck waiting for them. Oh it's our friend the dog and the cat. I

Introducing the Movie Director Game with Sam Esmail

"We have a special sort of conversation. Here we're joined by Mister Robot. Creator the Creator of the film comet The director of Amazon's homecoming. Yes Sam. Esmail saying what's up. Hello how are you? I'm so excited to be here. I'm such a fan. Oh that's very sam. You wanted to play a game with us. I did now. I want to know why you wanted to play that game with us and I also want you to explain the game. Well explaining it okay. I'll let me start by saying I'm a huge film. Learn as I think anybody who listens to the watch probably already gust. And I've always played this game with all my film nerd fans and so I figured one when I started listening to your podcasts. Which obsessed with a huge fan of I figured especially with Amanda Sort of counterpoint? To talk to your thinking Shawn's like I just thought this'll be a fun game to play the game. Basically and again. This is sorry for listeners. Who are not going to be in on this because it's so inside. It's not even that insight. It's but it's it's really not OK okay. I won't apologize here. We go is a good game in and you deserve it. It's the best director per decade and the best director who die who had their debut. That decade does that make sense. Did I explain this? Should we use an example to help people understand it? What's an example that we won't? Won't you trample on the choices that we've made here? Well we look at this decade. We had we had like a number of actually great film. Directors made their debut Jordan. Peele with get ou- Greta Gerwig with Lady Bird Vince Gilligan Man. This favorite with El Camino until nineteen many wonderful. Thanks well actually. Gertler made no thanks. But it's it's it's it's it's. It's good to bring up Vince. As an example because he actually that was his feature directing debut which is all coming up. Now the thing is it's not necessarily not saying what's the best directorial debut? Just the director that we appreciate. The most made that debut made their debut in that decade so I think that there's a couple of semantic complications around now and you know as well as I do that there are student films. Their short film features so. Let's lay the groundwork. Because Vince directed episodes of Britain. He directed the pilot breaking bug which I think was in the prior decade but we're talking feature directorial debut so that seems easy to Parse. It's not as easy to Parse as it seems. Now tell me why well. Are you talking about dual are GonNa be Spielberg is is a particularly complex example? Because of nine or you're talking about nine gallery 'cause that's TV while he made a movie when he was seventeen called firelight for five hundred bucks and is that a film. Is that a feature film even his parents saw. I wouldn't say a featured like a debut meaning. It was released in movie theaters got it. Okay commercially available. Commercially available attack. Those are good ground rules. I'm glad that we established that play into my less later on. I do consider to be because it didn't get released in theaters. Well it is a feature film but it was not this little guy but that is considering his feature debut his first full length movie right what. What's the movie after that? Then Land Express okay all right so yes we'll stick to that okay before we play the game now. The people understand the game I want but just add one other thing the interesting thing about this game and I think will when we go through. We'll see it's where the decades are hard because there's just so many amazing options and where the decades are not A. There's not a lot of options. I just find the conversation around that to be interesting because lanes a little bit about where movies are and where they're doing exactly specifically the nineties which I thought was just a burst of like creative inspirational film makers and then the very decade after the ONS which I struggled I struggled to find. I have some counterpoint to that point but I I wanna use this as an opportunity to pick a bone with you. Oh Wow okay I resent you. I resent your your appearance on this podcast because what I what we need. What this podcast needs is people like you making movies and television shows will but you love movies and you film in a very discreet way. Yes but and I mean I guess we're going to get into it right now. It's gotTa think about think about indie filmmakers. What happened let's say Ryan Kugler? Who Loved Fruitvale? Right mazing what happened to him. After he made fruitvale he went into the machine he went into the machine. And that's what's happening with a lot of these other directors and that. That's the difference between the nineties and now so I think. Pta came out with holiday today. Is he making you know Batman in two years and by the way no not dissing on Batman? I'm excited for When Matt Raises Version of it? Because I'm a fan of his but I think it's just the industry is dictating a lot of what directors are doing now and you know and not to 'em this point that's the machine that we're in right now so and that's more reflective of the decade so t to to get to my TV point. Tv's where you get to make the interesting shit. I don't know if I could have made mister robot as a feature in fact I tried well. That was my fault. Got a little long winded. With how long was that? That forty five. Our film now That feature from I wrote ninety pages of wasn't even into act tune. That's when I realized I was in trouble. Was there a divergent path for you where after comet you could have just doubled down and said I'll stay. I'll continue to stay kind of broke but I'll keep making movies will. Yeah I mean that was the plan I was going to make Mr Buzzing indie feature and got stuck with it and Steve Golan Who You know owns anonymous content who Read the pages of Missouri Button at the time detective had just come out and he just He had just produced. That and I thought women that will this is fucking coal. And I don't need to do anything with this. I don't need to refashion the script that I had in mind and fitted into this to our box and honestly I was just really more. I remember thinking I was way more excited about true detective than I was about anything. Elsa came out there. Trust them into. What are your thoughts on true detective because I have no idea? I don't love thank you. Yeah I think I think I see yes. The first season I think true detective on its face is like a accomplished piece of television filmmaking and also I'm a huge fan of cary Fukunaga always and forever Perhaps not for the same reasons. Assess it to me actually wrap. It was such a turning point. Anything his best thing that he's done. I'm not even going to say Jane Eyre Okay. I haven't I haven't seen that I haven't seen the new Bond movie I but I'm really looking forward to it because I'm also a bond person and also I just you know I think true true detective as this carries best thing. I think that's probably true but my issue with detective is not actually true detective itself. It is the dialogue around your detective. And also I think that's a pivot point in terms of when and how we started evaluating TV in terms of tracking shots and the actual just the athletic like filmmaking as a way to bring the an experience. What is this athletic yet? Flex now and then on twitter people are now saying slaps what what is all? I don't understand that you want to explain the Internet. Let's start with the athletic because Amanda I. I've heard you use a lot and I've I've been on a lot of sets of never heard anyone say the words. I think the first person he was at my friend on the TV critic Philip asking and I think it puts its finger on this idea of money that you bring her up because she wrote this she wrote. It was a harsh. I mean whatever I respect her reviews she dissed my one episode of Mister Robot whereas all one tracking shot. I assume yes is what you mean by athletic because I do think that Filmmaking and TV and everything is more than cameras and more than where the camera is and there is such a absolutely station online. The damore as more aspect of filmmaking and I think that the tracking shot is caption of that and just like. Oh Wow. Did you see what he did. That was so cool. Oh my God. The camera is moving. You know don't you think it but don't you think has a to me every every sort of choice that you make with the camera has an effect and yes to some extent it it takes you out of it and draws attention to itself but to some extent. I really I mean what do you think of the Copacabana Sean? And I and I and I do. Actually I think even tracking protective is effective. But you know we're doing a podcast right now. That isn't essentially about how we talk about. Film and like establishing a Canon of source. And the cannon is so reliant on where do we put the camera and what did they itch on showing us an either. Don't respond to that artistically at some point. I'm just like Yay like fancy camera. Shots you got it. Congratulations to you but I do also think it distracts from the other equally important. I feel making that. Don't get enough credit. I think code is also a specifically athletic is code for Masculinity. You know it's code for this sort of The might of the male filmmaker. Now that's not always true if you watch like strange days for example. Kathryn bigelow is doing a lot with the camera yet. It is unorthodox and cool and might have what would otherwise be deemed kind of masculine energy. But I do think that true detective and largely the dialogue like you're saying was about a lot of dudes being like Yo. This is sick now. Personally I thought it was sick. Oh okay but I I would. I was not a fan of those scripts and I don't think that story is very strong but I thought that was really well
