"I mean, I'm 16. Everyone's turning on the TV. I mean, what the heck is going on? I didn't realize that it wasn't clear that the plane hit the tower. And then within a few moments of being there watching TV, then you realize, Okay, a plane hit the tower. And then we saw the second one. We knew that was it. We knew the war was coming so but that was it was gut wrenching, like, felt like my stomach sucked into my shoes. Why in particular? Did you want to join the Marine Corps? Well, because it was the hardest branch and I wanted to, um so I I was in R J. R. O T. C and I was the captain of the of the PT team where the fitness team. And so I would say the guys are run and so those army soldier who would come and run with us, and he's always make us run into words hired you say now, Now we start running. And so he taught us this lesson. The mental toughness and I was a ha! I really like that that I didn't realize they could run more than I thought I couldn't. So I talked to Marines. The Marines came and they had more of that mental softness, Eat said, like the EMP degree, and they will make you They're really intense. And I figured I was a golf kid. So I was a golf kid in high school. I wasn't particularly like a tough guy or anything. But I knew I had a lot of hearts and that training that we did with the army and the Marines. Um you know, I I really value that mental toughness and I knew that I have the heart and will do this. If someone would just train me and make me strong. I could be that warrior if that was willing to like put myself through the process of becoming a warrior. And so I did that. I did exactly that in the works. They know what they're doing. They're going to training Marines are going to make the Marines. I think you had told me that you had some family members that were also in the service before you. Yes. So I didn't even know that my family had military history. On my mom's side. I'm a first generation American, my dad's side fifth generation Texan. Um, but, yeah, my my grandfather has served during the Korean War era had no idea And so I joined the military and I found that out. And then my uncle Purple Heart Marine, So and I had no idea he was in Vietnam. No idea. We just don't talk about military service. So when I joined after 9 11, my family kind of became more vocal about it, and we knew we were entering a new war and the grandkids are at that age to join. So my brother, my cousin myself all joined, Um we joined right around the same time. Be out. So to answer the first question my grandfather served in the Korean War era and my my Uncle Purple Heart, Marine being on veteran you were 16 when you made the decision that you were going to join the Marines. When did you actually join? So I signed all my 17th birthday signed the contract, but I shipped out a week after my 18th birthday. So I graduated high school in a week and half later as in boot camp, So by this time we're already getting ready for already in the Iraq war. Yes. So Afghanistan already kicked off. My brother was in the invading force in Iraq. Um, my older brother, and so he was ready, Marine. And when he joined, he came back all squared away was I gotta I already knew I was gonna do it. But see my brother come back. I knew like Yep, I'm definitely gonna do it now. I want to be some my brother changed. And I wanted to be that change and be a warrior and to fight the war. I was a combat engineer. So I focused on explosives, disarming, disarming bombs, making explosives or rates and things like that. We're coming up on the 20th anniversary of 9 11 and as we're as we're speaking The situation in in Afghanistan as as completely unraveled. What has it been like watching that for you? Um Heartbreaking. It's been heartbreaking. It's been a is so it's very confusing to have so many intense, complex emotions happen at the same time. Because, and I think all veterans are feeling the same way. It's not just one emotion like when September 11 happened. It was anger. You know, sadness. In this case, it's disappointments. It's It's anger. It's frustration is a sense of betrayal. There's a lot of affiliate is the sense of self doubt like Were we a part of something, you know that it didn't matter. Um, so all these questions, and they always come quickly, So it's like a package of really awful feelings that I think that myself and all the veterans are going through right now. It's just a tough spot to be in. But when I saw it happening I was in disbelieve me. I think we all knew that this was not going to end. Well, I mean, years ago. We were told by military commanders that there is no military solution to Afghanistan. Um and so I guess, in my heart of hearts, I knew it, but the seat happened and to see it. Actually an arrival, which is just heartbreaking. You can't help but ask yourself could could we have done more? Could we have done this in either way, But at this point, those things are those things are passed. So I'm a man of action. When things happen. I take action. I do things and so you know, when Covid happened, we started the veteran neighborhood leadership initiative. Like we said, Okay, veterans, Because this is what happens. Veterans are people of action. Veterans want to do something? We are especially my generation. We are used to getting into the fight, getting your hands dirty and doing something. And so I could sense of those appetite in the veteran community when Covid happened to do something, and obviously you can't Do stuff physically, but what it did is they created program to get all veterans that would participate to check on 10 doors left and right. So go check on. 10 may resist weights and neighbors this week, get them into communication platform. Check on each other. Take care of the elder and those who can't take care of themselves. It was just like away. The vetters could express their leadership or do something..

I don't see anything blocking there, and I haven't heard from D O T. Whether or not there's something there, however, they are still reporting that the crash at one 45th in Midvale is still taking up a couple of lanes and we're still finding ourselves pretty heavy getting into the downtown corridor in South 35 from just after 85 all the way through the convention center. One of which is this wreck on north on a five at 41st is actually getting ready to tweet out a picture on this one. It looks like not only are we taking up the each of feeling, but maybe even a little bit of that Left lane to back up now starts from just as you approach the building freeway and heading out that direction, adding an extra eight minutes under your drive. If you Headed to Everett this afternoon. It's busy on some 35 near to 20th back up on south. And if I began at after 85 heading into the downtown corridor, not the nine mile backup that we had yesterday, but definitely slower for those of you heading up South Centre Hill pretty busy north and in the Valley Freeway reaching that four or five merge. It's in the right lane and an update from Washington State Patrol about our situation on highway 18 and I five, all westbound lanes are open. So that's great news on that sense, however, not so great for drivers on South 25 as we leave just after 2 88 getting up to the highway, 18 interchange and drivers heading north founder finding themselves backed up outside of 54th insight to highway 18 as well. So this has pushed a lot of traffic over onto the Valley Freeway, where both directions are struggling. Between highway 18 and the 4 10 5 12 interchange. Speaking of 5 12, We had an earlier wreck out near canyon that has now cleared, According to D. O T. This will be coming down the hill and be well of approaching Meridian. And we do have a D O T camera there. Now it's brand new, and we're using that for this this morning. It doesn't quite reveal the accident that the congestion seems to be right at the end of the on ramp there, and it looks like we've got probably at least one lane blocked, not confirmed yet. It's hard to see from the camera. At least we have something to work with their the slowdown seems to start around South Hill Mall. That would be probably a good 10 minute loss of time. So far, we'll keep working on that for you to get more information on the Valley Freeway, partly because traffic is trapped back on 5 12. That's eased up a bit as you come up to 24th in same Sumner, But beyond that, it's a little bit slow. "And we got a pig and we got to take certified. We got its little red vest. And we did a segment for CBS called, Of course, when big slide on and Yes, And this went on and on and on the D O. T would not make a rule. It was it was getting crazy up there in the air because the flight attendants were seriously, uh in trouble because of it because they were getting bitten all the time, especially by people's dogs who didn't understand in the world. The flight attendant leaned over to give you the meal or the drink, but they were not attacking the owner. They had no place. They were not required to be in any kind of container. So they were roaming all over the plane and doing other things all over the planet you could imagine, finally, and of course, it was a great distance service to the true service animals. That really should be flying with people who have either a sight hearing or mobility. Disability on they were getting upset about it as well. Finally, the D O T issued a new rule that defines what a service animal is at a service animal. It can only be a specially trained dog. Trained to do nothing but assist that person with that disability. So from now on, and every other airline now is followed because they have to have the ammunition because of the D O T rule. They banned all those emotional support animals and if you want to fly with fluffy or fight, Oh, now it has to be smaller. That's it under the seat in front of you in a container and you pay for that, And sometimes the airfare for the dog is more than yours. Or if it's too big to fit under the seat in front of you. Then it goes into an improved kennel in the in the cargo hold on your flight, So we're back to the old days where nobody could take advantage of this loophole, and that's a good thing. Well, it's a good thing. But the problem is that there are legitimate reasons for people sometimes to want to fly with animals that are too large to fit under the seat in front of them. The other thing that you point out correctly absolutely correctly. People with legitimate service dogs paid a price for all this. They have legitimate animals to help them, But it includes invisible disabilities as well, which are a long list. Diabetic Detecting dogs seizure detecting dogs. Andre, as I say. It's a very long listen. I agree with you about that. And Norbert, you have a comment on this is well. Hi. Hi. How you doing? Uh, in regards to service animals, there is miniature horses there for guiding line visually impaired. I worked with service Dogs of America, which is in California. Are the issue. Bigger issue is that the 88 dozen want to put a central database of these animals as well. There is no such place where their line could go Look. Okay, This this animal is verified that it's a legitimate service animal for a blind person or duck personal. What now? And there's no way to combat it. I've personally myself seen is Thies fake service animals and at airports even till today. That that they just they still pushing through because they just don't want to deal with the headache of that. That customer be yelling screaming. I want now there should be a central database for these animals. In order for to provide help for visually impaired people, because this is a bigger issue, but I can help you with that. I can help you with that. Under the new rules, Every airline has not just done a blanket arming of these animals. What they've done is if you have a disability, and you have a documented animal that has been trained, you just have to show them the documentation and there's not a question asked. So that's the good news. It's a gray area of the so called emotional support animal that's gone and I couldn't be happier. Yeah, And a lot of people also don't know that a guy dog needs to pass 100 different commands in order to even be a guide dog. I mean, there's so many that these animals they're so intelligent and the ones they're legitimate intelligence are you know should not be mistaken for someone's little flushed activity. Norbert, I think I've gone to the Yeah, I've gone to the services that have actually trained these dogs. It's amazing to see what they go through. Norman's actually correct. Yep. Thank you. Norbert. Let me get to some of the text here is it's safer to go by plane. Boat or train. I don't know how you can answer that in one minute, but go for it. I can't the e. I can't because I don't know where you're going. I don't know how long the trip is. And I don't know the name of the ship and I don't know the train that you're taking nor the airline. You're flying. Only way they're gonna be able to survive is the hotels and resorts pivoting to provide those covert 19 tests for free? And also offer guests at some Mexican hotels already doing that. That's an incentive to talk about what people aren't talking about what they're thinking about. I don't want to go somewhere and get stuck and not be able to get home. They want a beating Kansas 77 69. They had four guys in double figures that I may see a Tiki had 13 points. Part of that great performances here on Freddy and Fitz Simmons makes I'm gonna start this basketball team. Ah, lot of people know how good you are for those who don't know. Let people know what is what makes Baylor so good to be undefeated this point in the season. We have about a death on our team. We got guys who come off the bench. But I think we played nine any given night to keep the supplies night on that Meyer he's had 20 point games. I don't fly goes had hot New world coming off the bench. Jonathan Charm, a tactful He has a lot of good games coming off the bench. I mean, you don't know Jeffrey. He gets any produces Ah lot he comes in. So now we're really deep and have a lot of death on the on the team. A lot of people circle of game versus Kansas every year. You're no different, but You had the upper hand from the start. What was it like jumping on a team like that when they made a run. You never let them believe any confidence that he could come back and win this game. We just persevere as a unit. We believe in ourselves at a zoo unit. We would just give all of our glory to God again. Today. We know that it gives us our strength throughout the games throughout our days, and, uh, we're going crazy with all this. What is it about this big 12 conference you got you got Texas? You got cancer. You got Texas Tech. All for you. Teams on the top. 20. It used be. The text was a football state. What is it like making Texas May CEO a basketball state? You know, it's tremendous because there's a lot of good players. Talented players in this conference got even even confident thing that you didn't say They've got a case coming and they got a lot of decisions on their team is about Washington Other day. Texas has a lot of good players. It's just a talented It's just a talented state, and that goes to the recruiting. So all of the coach's decision coaches They're they're They're doing the job and getting us here and in Texas. Well, happy be competing at the highest. And I mean, I passed the covers off into the other one thing that means nothing to shoot the ball. So you know when you know you got a coach and stuff like that. I mean, I just give you confidence to let him go because he knows that he sees me in the gym every single day. So just happened cause you to believe in me the way he goes, That's that's a tremendous amount. "Guber back with you on this New year's show, by the way, Happy New Year again if you're just joining us, and welcome to 2021 couldn't come a minute too soon. And joining me. Roger Dow, the president, CEO of the of the U. S Travel Association, with his wish list, or maybe a target list of what he wants done. And in the year 2021. We were just talking about the ancillary fees that were providing so much revenue for the airlines, in fact, more revenue for the airlines when they were getting his operating airlines. I mean, when you talk about baggage fees and and food fees and excess baggage fees and ticket change fees and all sorts of the re deposit fees, it really added up. Yeah, it was a significant money. We're talking about tens of billions of dollars. And if you trace it back, it inspected tax policy see fees are not attacked. Where your airline ticket is taxed. So there's a 7% difference if you get a feat dollar versus the ticket dollars, So we changed our tax policy. I think the airlines would be much more open to making the money in the right way. Providing great transportation Great service. So that's a hidden secret here. It was all about the actual fact that the fees weren't taxed. So that was found money for the airlines that Right. And if there's a policy like that, I don't blame anyone for taking Vanja with that, But I think we could fix our tax policy in many ways to make travel more attractive. In fact, that's one of things I wish for his attacks. Credit for travel. You want to get the economy going again? President Should every American be allowed a duck $4000 for travel. It will get so many more people traveling, They'll spend money like crazy and the government make money on it. I like that idea. Was that your idea? So far. Yes, and we're pushing it. I'm not getting way We really are. Okay, So here's on my list. Roger. In the interest of transparency, and I've talked about this on so many shows, resort fees at hotels. Why they doing that? I mean, especially city hotels that have nothing to do with resorts are charging. Resort feat that could be size 40 or $50. A night for somebody staying five nights. That's 250 bucks. They didn't plan on. Plus what did it get them a towel? Yes, it Zaveri similar to the bag fees, And I think a lot of the hotel companies are actually looking at that on just saying, Hey, how do we put the value of the equation and I think it was a false positive as far as making money. And then we get down to something called the United States Department of Transportation and their rule making ability. Many, many years ago, they actually were able to do the tarmac delay rule where Congress couldn't get it done. But the U. S Department of Transportation did and it basically said if an airline takes you back from the gate and keeps you on the runway for any more than three hours without returning you on a delay situation the airline could be filed could be fined up to $27,000. Passenger. I mean, on a Boeing 7 37. That's like $2.6 million and the airline said Oh, we'll never be able to do this. It's just It's just draconian. It's terrible. How money three hour delays have there been since they passed that rule. Like to, um, I think that's when we need to look at what the D O. T rules are that are already in place about ticket refunds that the D O. T has not done an enforcement action on Following the pandemic because their billions of dollars that a road passengers under the law that the D O T is not enforcing. Well, I think you make a good point that I'll leave that one up to you. Oh, I knew you were gonna bite on that one. Roger. Okay, but the bottom line is we have an opportunity here, not necessarily make new rules. But just to basically enforce the ones that we already have. There's nothing wrong with that. No, I totally agree with you. And you know you're yes about my holiday wishes. I've got to last ones that I'd like to get in there. One is that the world will embrace what Mark Twain said 150 years ago. Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow minded this We get people traveling again. We can bring this country together again on my last wish is that you and I could go on a holiday shopping trip in China Once again. I remember that very well. Roger. That that that's a story that will be have to be left for the memoirs. But the bottom line is you know when we have the freedom to travel, and this is serious, truly have the freedom of travel. Where we're not just talking about a pandemic. We're not talking about politics or borders were talk about everything where people can make free and open choices to travel when they want, where they want and with due respect to other laws, how they want It's amazing what can happen in the world that politicians and diplomats have been unable to achieve on their own. Well, as you know, I just last month had our first grandchild and my daughter because she knows his business. First thing she's doing next month is getting in the passport. I love stories like that. There's somebody you know what that should be on Everybody's wish list right now, when travel is not high when the numbers aren't high, get if you if you need to renew your passport, do it. Now You need to get a new one. Do it now because of you Wait till April. When things start exploding. You may not, You may lose the summer would be unable to go somewhere because of the backlog. Is the perfect time to get either renewed or a new passport. It's good for 10 years. It's the best investment you will ever buy. It's the most. It's.
