"He put me in touch with a guy named Troy bloom, who did an awesome job and we went back and forth a few times. He was great to work with. I gave him a little plug at the end of every podcast. And it was great. And it meant a lot to me that someone here locally in a former chief was able to write that music for us. Absolutely. And there's so many cool examples of stuff like that that are out there. Yeah, and George is a great guy and I remember him well from his time at Florida state and there's so many so many talented folks like that. I wanted to ask you this. Have you ever missed any games? Did anyone has anyone ever had to fill in for you? I mean, in 42 years, I imagine there had to be at least one time. I'm going to pretend you didn't ask me this question. And we're just going to go right to the next. No, I have not. I have not missed. You've never missed. I have been so close to actually missing a performance, and I'll tell you the story real quickly. We were in Notre-Dame. The iconic Notre-Dame stadium. The chiefs are typically, well, they were sitting on the field as a lot of the Big Ten style schools did and Notre-Dame at the time. The visiting band was down kind of on the sideline area. And it was a pretty good hike from where they were, where I was sitting with them up to the press box for halftime performance. And being the dummy that I am. I waited a little bit too long to get around to get up to the press box and I was literally sprinting up stadium stairs in the stairwell to try to get into the press box area and find the PA booth before the chiefs went on. So I kind of got to the PA box and kind of went ladies and gentlemen. So it was close. But no, no. Conflicts, nothing. No sickness, no conflicts. I have back in a thousand after 41 years and hopefully hopefully the good lord blesses me to where I am not jinxed now. Thankfully, for your question. Do you ever make anybody mad for having to choose that over something else? No, actually, you know, it's like family and friends and relatives and everybody else knows. Don't schedule weddings in the fall. Don't do it. Just don't do it. People get what they deserve when they schedule a wedding on a football Saturday. I'm sorry I can't make it. I just can't do it. But yeah, I haven't had to deal with it. So this was the last year that gene deckerhoff called FSU football games. We're going to obviously miss him a lot. Did you have a lot of interaction with gene up in the booth? What's your relationship with Jean? I do, Jean and I are very cordial with each other and we have a little tradition of when he comes into the press box area on game days to set up and do his pre game schedules and stuff. He has some downtime and he would typically come in and stick his head in the booth where big woody Hayes and I would he does the PA obviously internally for Florida state and the stadium at do Campbell as well as basketball and other events. But I would be sitting in there with woody because in addition to my responsibilities as the voice of the Martin chiefs, I also spot for woody during the game. So I'm up there in the press box. So for people who don't know what that is, tell us what that means to spot for the announcer. Okay, basically I am sitting at his elbow with the roster and a pair of binoculars and I'm watching the game and pointing and referencing to who's carrying the ball who's making tackles who's recovering when there's a penalty pointing things out to him on the field. So he can relay that to the stadium through his announcing. And woody has been a close friend and a great partner in doing that. We have more fun than we should during the games. You know, everybody talks about the press box has to be a pretty neutral spot, but I won't tell you that we don't share a little bit of some high 5s of high 5s every now and then as our Knowles make their way through the season. But grey got to work with. So and that gives me something to do during the game, so I am there at his I was so in halftime comes. I'm ready just to slide it being useful the whole game. Right, so I can slide over one chair and do that. And I've had the privilege of doing that both for woody and his predecessor Nick Minnick that I thought very highly of a great guy who did the stadium announcing their Florida state for so long as well. Okay, so when I think of spotting in numbers, I think of that first game with the new Nike uniforms and you couldn't see the numbers. Did you have a yeah, that had to be a rough game? It's a mess. And people don't realize I'm the complainer in there when a visiting team shows up and it's something as simple as there's no shoulder pad numbers. Players with shoulder pads. You realize how hard it is when somebody's laying on the ground. You can't see their Jersey number and they have their numbers on their shoulder pads. And some teams with the new designs have updated not to do that. And I'm like, come on, people. Come on. It's all about me. You have to get this right. Waters are people too. That's right. All right, so let's zoom back to your career path now. So you had already gotten your foot in the door with the office of the auditor general in college and you decided that's where you were going to go and you ended up being there, but for like 24 years? Yeah, I spent 22 years with the auditor general's office and just a great experience. We were doing financial audits, operational compliance audits, I had a chance to work with a number of different state agencies as a state auditor you kind of get to go out and and deal with them and work with different agencies. So you get a little bit of different perspective on the agency operations and help them be better as well, as well as ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. So it's not just financial auditing. Not just financial, right? A lot of it is compliance driven if there are certain administrative rules, policies, procedures, even Florida statutes that they have to comply with and stuff you would go in and help ensure that. And it's a role that the auditor general plays very much kind of under the radar for a lot of folks, but the reports are then given to a legislative auditing committee for their review and stuff. They're a matter of public record, but again, not a lot of folks know a lot about it, but had that opportunity loved it every bit of it worked through that. Promoted through as a supervisor as an audit manager. Had responsibility for audits of certain state agencies, one of which was the department of highway safety and motor vehicles. Which then eventually I was approached by the executive director out there to take a position with the department as the deputy executive director, and I went out there and spent my last 13 years of my state career working with the department of highway safety and motor vehicles. That was 2002 that you made that change. Correct. So that's a pretty big change, right? Yeah. Obviously you go from the operational side of the shot. I mean, from the auditing side, the post audit side kind of thing, looking at things in arrears, so to speak. To living it real time. And yeah, it's a different animal. But a great experience, some wonderful folks out there. And of course, the department of highway safety covers a lot of things. Driver's licensing motor vehicle laws and licenses. Registrations, titles, and of course the Florida highway patrol, which is probably the most visible part of the department. Which was a totally different set of operational things for me to take on, but a great experience. And thoroughly enjoyed it. There are some stellar folks out there at the department do a yeoman's job of keeping Florida safe and working through it. And had a great time for those 13 years before I retired. And you also served as a communications director while you were there. I did. I wore a couple of different hats through the change of executive directors. I changed my rolls around a little bit. I worked as a comms director for a couple of years, and then when I retired, I was actually serving as what they called the chief performance officer, which was to do in strategic planning and performance management, building dashboards for monitoring how we were doing meeting goals objectives and things like that. And that was kind of fun too. And that was back to kind of wearing a little bit of a different hat as well. But the perspective of looking across the spectrum.

"Former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi may withdraw from the race to become president within days Bloomberg's told Berlusconi has been trying to secure the backing he'd need to win the ballot that starts on Monday but he's realizing he'd fall short of the votes needed and is now preparing to pull out That would boost prime minister Mario Draghi's chances of being elected In the UK a mental health crisis made worse by the pandemic is driving labor shortages at a causing severe recruitment difficulties for employers between February 2020 and November last year 209,000 people dropped out of the workforce due to being long-term sick and data suggests that almost the entire increase in long-term sickness during the pandemic has been among people with depression anxiety and other mental health issues Well UK companies are piloting a four day week without a pay cut about 30 firms have signed up to a trial that will begin in June The 6 monthlong program will see firms allowing staff to work 32 hours per week while leaving their compensation and benefits unchanged Global news 24 hours a day on air and Don Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists in Alice in more than a 120 countries I'm Hannah George This is Bloomberg Anna Hannah thanks very much Now back to one of our top stories and certainly the big political story of the moment Boris Johnson will today mount another attempt to fight off challenges to his job as prime minister A group of new Tory MPs is reportedly plotting to oust him over the lockdown party allegations Bloomberg's James Walcott joins us now in our London studio with all the details James good morning So what do we know about this 2019 intake of MPs and what they plan So it's worth saying some of them are very clear on Twitter this morning of the 2018 intake there are a 107 MPs 20 of them reportedly met yesterday in what's been called the pork pie push because it was in the Melton mowbray constituency They are unhappy They are unhappy because they a lot of them are from formerly labor seats which means they're quite vulnerable to any sort of change They are seeing constituency emails pile up about Johnson's of upset in the polls And so for these scandals and I'm happy because they've been in government for two years and some of them want jobs they're very ambitious people They have their own interests as well and they think that if things don't sort out the Johnson soon they might lose their next election So they 20 of them not the whole intake are saying that this is the time now to strike And so 20 out of that 107 but more of them meeting in this so called pork pie push That's a guess a great one That's quite meeting at Melton Mobius That's quite far south Some of them representing of course quite northern constituencies But assembling there So how bad is the situation for Johnson Because of course he's not just about those 20 it's about 54 That's the magic number Exactly That's the magic number And if we're going to do some sort of ambiguous number player we have 7 MPs were publicly Tory MPs were publicly put in letters You have the 20 yeses who reportedly meeting and then sourcing in the press today said there may be another 20 around That takes years of 47 but the problem with these letters is no one knows barth the Graham Brady the chair of the 1922 committee they've actually put in those letters or not And what we can say rather than sort of the ambiguity about numbers is there are clearly splits in the Tory party Some back Johnson some clearly don't in our publicly saying so that is new And some aren't sure about the timing Some Sean aren't sure about who you can take over as leaders I'm sure aren't sure if this is going to hurt them in the short term or if their own party activists went back in But the fact that those who are willing who don't back Johnson are willing to take a public stand is a new low for this piano Yeah and as we've seen in elections in leadership elections leadership votes that we've known and loved in the past the James If you go too early if you want somebody out and if you go too early you can undermine your position can't you Because you then give them protection from attack for another year or so So is it just the parties that he's causing the anger amongst these MPs or or is it a wider set of policies I mean it certainly is a large part of the party but there's so much else going on What is fascinating to me is that Johnson as well as doing p.m. Houston today which is a pretty roaring affair may also be set to start of announcing the end of COVID restrictions something that would have been a lap of glory for him making a right call in December This could have been a very different month if not the party gate However when we come back to the 29 intake which you rightly honed in on as the new thing today they've been unhappy for a while If you look back to the OM Paterson scandal last year this big lobbying a fair wear sort of MPs felt they were backing the wrong horse and sort of got walked up to defend John's position that then fell apart A lot of these MPs have felt unloved ignored by Johnson left on the back benches for a long time already and the as much as part of it is the final straw and a big big explosion to be the final straw This kind of problem has been building in Johnson's administration for a while Okay so can operation save big dog out do the pork pie push we will look at keep addressing that story Sometimes in full English Thanks James Thanks for joining us We've been backstage World Cup with the look at the fortunes all lack thereof of prime minister Boris Johnson right now Let me tell you what is coming up on the program Straight ahead on Bloomberg day break Europe I was speaking to Robert Joyce institute for fiscal studies deputy director a lot of focus right now on the cost of living And.

Yeah I don't know there's a couple of mon here This is this. One is one of my favorites. A falling baby was saved twice by the same man. Oh where'd you in detroit from the sky in detroit in the nineteen thirties. Young a young mother obviously very careless. I know there's there. There was a guy named joseph fig lock and he was walking down the street. The mother's baby fell out the window onto this guy fig lock and the fall. The baby's fall was broken because he fell onto the guy so both the men and the baby were unharmed. So you know stroke of luck but a year later the very very same window kid was playing again and joseph fig lock walking by the same window again. The baby falls out the window a year later on to the same guy no. I'm not a trampoline down. They're not joseph. Free arrow whatever's names mysteries of the unexplained. This is from some of these really weird coincidences. That's one of them. what's another one another. Give you something a little more recent Let's see. I wasn't prepared. I thought it was out the code and he ran into somebody from hawaii. It's amazing so confused. Well here's one. Twin brothers were killed on the same road. Two hours apart in two thousand and two seventy year old twin brothers died within hours of one. Another on separate.

"Interesting because that was a question. We we got a question. The other day. The commissioner i in a meeting we did and it was putting covert aside. What is your biggest challenge and funny thing about where we are is. You can't put covert aside right. Cova defines everything we do and everything we're going to do for the course of this year. Unfortunately so you know. We are very pleased and happy. We've been able to do as well as we've done Both completing in nineteen twenty season and completing the truncated twenty twenty one season. We're looking forward to more progress this year. And as you said completing eighty two game season in full stanley cup playoffs and getting back to a more normal calendar than we've had in the last two years. Those are all important objectives. We are pleased with the growth of the sport. Growth of the league. And the league's fan base in and revenues We hope to get back on that cycle right so you know. The last two years have been strange years This year we were hoping that most if not all of our teams will have full buildings Fans in the stands passion around the game and we can get right back on the the cycle. We were on which is growth just out of that a couple of questions. First of all specific to canada. What are you expecting in terms of building. Capacities so Currently we understand. They'll be reduced capacity in vancouver. They'll be reduced capacity in quebec and to start off the season We don't know where we are going to be in ontario yet in. Ottawa and toronto both hoping For more guidance on that in the coming days and weeks and in alberta there won't be any capacity restrictions and manitoba no capacity restrictions so Pretty much full buildings certainly different than where we were last year in our canadian cities so hopefully very soon will have full capacity in our seven canadian cities. The other thing. I think people are curious about is just the cap you know you talked about the the business impact of cova. How long are you expecting either. A flat cap or just a million dollar raise per year. So i think we move at least our current projections on revenue Move us into kind of a million dollar raise a year starting next year So i do expect That will kick in. We do have flexibility under our formula under agreement players association to revisit that to the extent. There's a need to revisit that and perhaps make The increase greater but Certainly in short term. We've been telling our clubs to kind of plan on one million dollar increases to the cap olympics. That's a huge one. obviously As i look around the landscape am i characterizing this correctly i get the sense that. Nhl owners or the nhl or donald fear. The pa are thrilled about any of this but the players are would it be safe to characterize at the players are the only ones that are enthused about the idea. I think once you clarify that news enthused. That's probably true. I do think look. The bottom line is when we negotiated this with the players association. In the summer of twenty twenty. We knew it was important to the players and That's impart why we agreed to it. You know at the end of the day as we played out the negotiation the summer with the w. h. f. One of the huge issues was who's assuming the risk of kobe and the fact that the players kind of stepped to the plate and really assumed a large portion of that risk themselves tells you how much and how important it is to them. So i totally respect that. They love competing for their countries and winning medals for the countries and so i totally respect the importance. that this is for the players it's been demonstrated by what we're dealing with. So we support it. I mean it's You know best on best competition on the olympic stage You know you gotta look at the positives. The positives are they'll be more people watching our game than typically watch our game and and maybe that translates to the growth. I was talking about so we're trying to focus on the positives of olympic participation. And not as much on the negatives is there a deadline for when the nhl would have to say in the players have to say we can't go because their commitment to this so the commitment that the wf made us going way back way back to The meeting we had with rene fizzle At the stanley cup final. Is they understand that. We have to be flexible. We we have to have the ability to pull out if circumstances warrant us pulling out and so you know our discussions in our agreement with them. Contemplates our ability to pull out at any time There are different financial consequences associated with pulling out late as opposed to sometime this fall. And so that that's recognized in the agreement where where there's an assumption of costs associated with a a late withdrawal. I certainly hope that we're not in a position where we're making that decision in january or february if a decision to be made hopefully that comes sooner than unvaccinated players. The numbers you expect revolve around so we get projections From the clubs on a frequent basis One of the kind of the last gating Factors was what there are protocols. we're gonna look like Think we got the final protocols out. In early september to our clubs. I think that was a a motivating factor for a number players who are now in the process of getting accented. We do expect by the start of the regular season. The opening day of the regular season that the number of of nhl players who aren't fully vaccinated will be a very low number. Know less than fifteen maybe even less than ten so You know we're a very high subscription rate on vaccination in the nhl community think. We're about ninety eight ninety nine percent which We're we're pleased about so. In the code protocol agreement. There was something that said that there could be a choice to pursue a travel exemption with the canadian government. I think it's by friday. If a player is unvaccinated will there be a chance to get a travel exemption. Or are they going to be on their own so I think the commitment we made the protocol was to sit down with the players association by friday And talk about whether there's a need to go to the canadian government to seek an exemption that would be a process It's not as simple as picking up the phone Making a call and trying to get a travel exemption that are prior experience in the exemptions The national interest exemptions. We got from the canadian authorities. Were it's a you know. It's a multi week. Maybe sometimes multi-month process to get those types of approvals. So that's one of the things..

nhl Cova manitoba quebec Ottawa alberta vancouver ontario toronto olympics donald canada canadian government rene olympic

"Was there perfect situation in some of the people that at the time was running mike. The afternoon director mike bone wasn't there was totally different administration. They were old administration. So you hire somebody from within because guess what it does for you. It becomes self preservation. Now all of a said. We don't have to worry about cleaning house if we bring somebody about some stability you got some stability. We're okay. let's just. He can get us to where we need to in all fairness you want a lot of games. He didn't win the right games but he won a lot of games. And when you don't beat the ohio state buckeyes and you don't beat alabama's when you have the same type of recruiting classes in numbers players. This is what happens to brought stability at first then overtime. The results were trending in the wrong direction. This is life. It's the most people you don't have a job forever through the job for some time and then you have the next job you know and we've anyway we've talked about week. Two starting with the teams. I said earlier. It's the giants in the washington football team tomorrow night. Now let me start this. I'm most worried about the giants. And the reason most worried about the giants is because i'm a giants fan and it's been a year in and year out disappointment after disappointment but if i'm being honest about what which team is more significant right now like what this game is going to tell you. It's washington key. You brought it up before with quarterback. This washington team is very live right. Is taylor heineke quarterback who has more concerns right now. The giants or the wash did okay against the chargers. When he came in and relief for ryan fitzpatrick right. He did okay. they're in the game. They were in a game so if he gets four week as with. The starters is the number one guy and is he going to be better. He should be so. I don't know what i'll know tomorrow. Night when i see the giants play at home against the giants who not look good. They got to win that game. Don't they the giants need to win the game. It's it's a situation where there's a lot riding on the giants for number reasons. General manager quarterback fan boys both the u. s. You guys fan men men men whatever you didn't do they use fan man they say it all that your sanity of the new york giant fan base so when you look at it. There's a lot riding on him in. You got to win this game. Washington in my opinion can drop this. Be okay wow think they can drop it and build fundamentally team. They think they're better team. Because of the defense james makes up there is offensive even with teller. Heineke there taylor hynick. He's is gonna have a lot of time to throw the ball. You watch how much time denver had to what we we don't have an address. J. there's no pass rush. I mean it. Convert over fifty percent third downs. And that's that's the problem. The defense couldn't get off the field in one of the reasons. I say i think they could be okay if they drop this one in the giants can't because of everything just mentioned right. The players the coaches the fans. All of those things. Also the quarterback the quarterback has been in the system. He's been there. he's each played. Enough games tyler. Heineke really played since journal. Giants jones playing. But he's facing a pass rush has not. he's still playing. He still played so if he goes out here. In all y'all in trouble because that's what she go see every single year in every single game moving forward but if washington lazing there it's okay because this is his first start. Yeah this is what bothers me so much. Jay starting from gettleman shows up with a boston accent in new york. Right like you don't have a lot of activity..

"Always had great defenses. And here's the thing and even as throughout the one in seven record as far making the playoffs without brady route of most of the great colleges most of them have had their stretches where they didn't win. I know who's fantastic. Four super bowls in with the steelers his last seven years. He made the playoffs one time. How don shula with the dolphin yup minute and he wanted a super bowl right and only undefeated team in history. Yup and he went looking to last twelve years of his had dan marino and never won a super bowl with marina. So tom landry gets fired. Fired in dallas. David part of boston are you from. I'm actually. I just moved up here for school. I'm in the fenway district. Right now be you know. Terriers you live hurting well. Yeah oh yeah for. Sure the beautiful. I'm a new yorker but the city is nice for no arguments for me. David i tell you to take the jets. Plus wasn't picky money line against the panthers next week at wong. What about the donald revenge gay. Yeah sam darnold. Plague a bunch of threes in pittsburgh and almost threw a pick. Meanwhile zach wilson had six drives zero three now to scores looking good right now. I just think the lines too. Nice not to take sam darnold. Always do for one. Just boneheaded interceptions especially in the new system. So i think bob salah's goalie boys though i make. They're one sixty two good enough. You don't root for the jets do i do. I've seen the album gays experience. Okay well star. I was just talking about the home. Rangel true We worry about their identical disagree with a lot that he said no the panthers minus it's four and a half at home versus the new york jets has a lot. it is a lot still just. Don't all about the jets o. line. I'm waiting to see how that pans out that you know they were potentially the worst team in the league last year. Yeah for sure they were potentially in the jaguars. Obviously we're but did they is. I'll say this i think. Zack wilson is better than sam. Darnold i i definitely would much rather have wilson like he brings much more to the table in just from panthers. Got some nice offensive pieces though they do. Dj more probably. That's probably a game. That i'm just gonna watch and see what hap- yeah instead of ben and i think i'm going to put together a new number player touchdown score parlay okay in..

"Is parker. Brenton he tweets. You said this could be dangerous. A couple snaps later. bishops sycamore. best athlete goes down. The coach doesn't approve running clock sad he needs to answer. I agree that's That's heartless if i ever heard of anything and oh by the way going back to play friday night and sunday night. It's not the first time this happened. Johnson even downplayed the number players in the game from the columbus dispatch saying that was about fifteen players who have played in both games when it was in fact more than that shocked. I know so. This is from jokin. Z. e. x. p. on twitter the bishops. Sycamore coach. roy. Johnson just said on twitter chat that twelve to fifteen has guys played in both friday in sunday's game against img and playing center in two games over three days. Roy johnson had this assay well. I justified that decision as he is eighteen years old. We assume that. Hey are you good to play. We having a good thing. Wait let me read that justified. That decision as in he's eighteen years old we asked him Like hey are you good to play. Are we having a good thing. We asked him. That's not me stuttering What it says we we asked him and the number two will be number two where we ask them is like. Hey when you coming in to make this play we're going against this competition for us. That game Yeah excuse me a minute while readjust my brain. I have no idea what that said. So i imagine paragon marketing scheduled the event for espn raw. She ghazi the president of paragon marketing. Said they would have canceled. They know about bishops sycamore playing in multiple games that weekend although apparently there was already video evidence showing this is the case. this is ben coup b. k. O on twitter put aside. That's a very bad team from shady. School the light to get on tv. You absolutely cannot play two games in three days in sang. Also he spoke to the president said he would have canceled the game if he knew team played on friday. We reviewed fridays film. Seemed like players. Play both games update coming soon so elise paragon did the right thing. After that saying they'll never work with. Bishop sycamore game so pretty much. In a few years this is probably by pop up as another company and coach has different name and everything. So yeah.

"Like kind of what the hell are they gonna do. They already had a ton of guaranteed contracts on their books that just added three of they did take off money for the twenty two twenty three season and and also had this crazy overstuffed guard rotation because they added beverly and rondo to a point guard rotation that already had job miranda's the centerpiece and to have ties jones. Still on a one one more year in his contract that partially resolved a couple of days later when the grizz traded beverly to minnesota for jerk culver and juancho hernan gomez and so what that does theoretically if culver and hernan gomez stick in memphis which my expectations that they will is that. Okay you move off of. Beverly you get to kind of potential players and it also gives that climate in the front office a an a all evaluation window uncover because covert top. Pick very recently was. He has a a team option and for rookie scale contracts. That team option has to be decided a full year ahead apptime so basically at the start of the the current season. They'll have to decide whether they want. Page eric culver. A fully guaranteed eight point one million for the following season and then once johanna gomez has a fully guaranteed year this year but then non-guaranteed for twenty two twenty three while while it actually at important distinction there you. Can you still get to decide on the rookie options at the end of october. So they will have a you know. A few days to see culver may playing in games. The other thing too is that culture is slated to make if that option were to be picked up. It's eight point one million. Yeah so that might give them enough headroom to resign him anyway of a true on the decline decline. It and then pay him. Yeah yes so. I if you i mean so. I think that they will probably decline. And that's what i have in my projections And i also have them. Declining hernan gomez is. What would i was talking about them. The as might have a little bit earlier. That i that they will decline culver. They could resigned but he's got a he's got to the new justice window for them. Now right yeah. I think that's a reasonable way to to interpret it and culver you. And i were both low on him as a draft pick Just kind of wondered what his what his goto skill was going to be. But a totally worthy lottery ticket for the grizzlies. I mean they're they've now have seemingly infinite number players on the roster but culver is talented and be you know maybe he can find a little bit on volver. There naked defend multiple positions. And then watch like. It's always been a question of whether his jump shot would come round. I think he's a smart player. He's better on the glass than Than some guys to size but it it's kind of like the whole. The whole picture doesn't make sense unless he can make shots and spread out the defense a little bit and he really didn't do that in minnesota last year to the to thirty three percent on actually the highest three point volume of his career so memphis also has an overstuffed frequent rotation. You think about kyle. Anderson jared and now stephen adams and brennan cork and all these other guys. So they'll get a chance to see it and with juancho. Maybe i don't even think they would stretch it. I think they would just keep around and maybe kind of they have to. But i think. I think he's one of the fifteen best players on the roster have to see if that's enough to get them in the sure did not have an impressive season a year ago but he does potentially a fill a need for them and you know his rebounding. You mentioned that that stretch for position could may an okay fit with jeremy. At one point he had some switch ability. But yeah i mean. It's been years now since he flashed that potential early in denver for minnesota standpoint. Beverly i think helps them. He makes up for the loss of ricky rubio. He gives them more of a defensive identity. You like fit reasonably wall next to de ngelo. Russell and anthony edwards. You'd think he is a probably gonna start. He also now we thought. Oh maybe they're going to just have leandra. Tomorrow be the backup point guard and beverly may kind of more of a to ostensibly at this point. Anyway you know maliki beasley could have as playing time squeeze we one of beasley or bull. Morrow is to play last josh akagi. Probably gonna play the as well also for a team. That so focused on the regular season. A guy who doesn't have the greatest track record of staying healthy over the course of a regular season. You worry about that as well but the bigger thing is man. I mean this was what a terrible draft pick for. The wools jerk. Culver turned out to be when we talk about the worst draft. Picks of the last. Five years You know we've done. We've done that pod before for the previous five years i that's going to be really bad. Some said that they made that trade before the draft move up and try to get jury garland thinking that the cavs would never take another point guard after they already at sexier than they lost garland girl would have been an interesting. Fit there If they get garland maybe they never trade for de ngelo russell. A lot of things could have been different about the wolves but the culvert to me was by far the worst of that group guys now. It wasn't an amazing list behind him necessarily a guy's got drafted. But you having to basically be given up on it after two years and he's mostly injured last year as well and this shows you how loan opinion they have of him to trade him for a holds. Beverly three two on the last year of his contract yet for a rental of guy who i don't think is even going to start with. I think they're going to start russell edwards and beasley but at beverly will play plenty. I think he's in many ways. The primary backup for all three gentlemen. So like i don't know how finch wants to run the rotation about beverly's thirty three now ed so to trade him at a at a position where they still don't have anyone by the way they still don't have three on this roster..

hernan gomez culver jerk culver juancho hernan gomez eric culver johanna gomez minnesota memphis grizz Beverly beverly rondo Anderson jared stephen adams brennan cork juancho miranda jones grizzlies

"Nobody's beat them. In fifteen years is the best in the country. Just know that. Aj you can just give up now in pay. We'll just do a thousand a month. Payment might have to be what i did. Just caught a couple of turnovers and that fourth quarter. Cover the teaser. Funnier you know. I told him. I go pay me a word picture. What would have had to happen to cover that. My point is houston might be the best preseason team if there was a second half preseason super bowl houston would win it because they spent a whole off season improving third number player thirty five right and you know they're going to be motivated and he goes with aaron rodgers team california cool in the first preseason game the market. I tell you. I got scared. The line were so good. No 'cause mckenzie you tax. The line moved right. It was really fascinating. Moved not just one place everywhere to three and a half for about fifteen minutes and then they went back to three when that happened. I really sour feeling in my stomach like somebody with a lot of money just ate up three and a half for breakfast. You went after nar. J. may even have phonied-up exactly. I'll just lay three and a couple of choice. Her age as handicapper national radio. Listen this game is prime to phone any final takeaways. I'm neutral because i'm worried about the josh allen regression but i do think the bills are really good. I and i think they do a lot of things that are being so advanced. Theoretically really helps them. 'cause they're playing a different game they really are so i'm neutral. I had to go somewhere. i'd go over. 'cause i think the odds of josh allen beam was is is like one in five but i still think that twenty percent should meant something to the bills but i don't think it affects me when i'm trying to be right fifty five percent of the time here so i would lean over. Do we all assume that. Even if josh allen regresses he doesn't regress back to well no no i. Don't i think it's i think would he's been a majority of his life as possible. Okay right how could it be. Like if we. If i said he was gonna regress. What's the what's the bottom you could see him regressing to. I would says over under being the seven and a half best quarterback this say fifty fifty but yeah saying is but it's our volatile give you thirty to one or let's say confidence that one ninety percent. I'll give you twenty two one. How bad would i have to like. If i said josh allen will be the twenty sixth qbr twenty six or worse. And i gave him twenty. Two one i would. I would bet that he'd be twenty six to twenty so the ninety five confidence lab ninety seven percent confidence level. A the very bottom of the league. I think because. Now i wouldn't say that about mahomes. You're not going to say that about russell. wilson. Probably close in the second half. I hear you so. I think there's hey. Listen it's one freakin year. And it's a year in which we sat. It could every quarterbacks numbers last year be inflated 'cause no road crowd and so. How many years is josh allen. Have in the elite category or even above average when he's played against roy teams. That has i think. He's an aberration possibly last year. Either burn this or we have this table least. We can't finding the archive. I saw something. Bob dylan nobel laureate. I was watching on youtube. They had a case western. They had a big seminar and dylan dylan mice. Two hundred caches for for the pod pod. Odds went up from last week. Hey he's one of the seminal influences in my life but apparently they went back after he won the nobel prize for literature and they try to get his school records. Someone was doing expose. They were missing. Bob dylan was so forward thinking that when he became famous he paid someone off. That's the only way it could have. Every other record was there to actually like remembering the wire where they they went down. They couldn't get Omar barksdale remember. They couldn't get a picture of this season because they went down. He was getting a check family and they didn't have even his baby or he's a little pictures he didn't want anyone dylan went in gangster style. Got his records out there that maybe what we need to do okay. A little time shift. We went on about a thirty minute. Arts discussion no. We're popping that to the end of the pod. It's the only get to the end of the pod. I mean i guess. There's a portrait on one hundred dollar bill. And that's at the end of you. Want it dylan talk. Dave chapelle continue though as the new england patriots tied for second favourite in the afc east plus three fifty to win the division thirty to one to win the super bowl. Nine point four. The current win total. They opened it plus four eighty down. Two plus three fifty. What are your thoughts. On the pats as sham very bullish on the patriots cova date guys opting out and that defense just was not the same and now you look at the guys coming back in. Hightower returns bringing jude on. Vaughn god's can't pronounce these names. God chalks vanoy comes back from miami. Football outsiders ranks the addition the net addition in defenders for new england to be the greatest addition to a defense that they've ever seen before and let's face it. If anything the free agency was spent on offense yeah and we we the free agent money the exactly right. The big signings were the two tight ends johnny smith and hunter henry and the two wide receivers aguilar etc new injured born. Thank you and you both. These guys aren't ones but twos or threes. Compared to what they had last year they might as well be one exactly. How much are you gonna move. The ball with jacoby myers. So now i've got a team that's gonna have a much better. They won seven games last year. I got a team. That's got even with those increases in the defense. I expect that that would be worth the winning after two wins. And i got a quarterback cam. I dunno camps going to be the quarterback. He had cova week three came in june. It was just a disaster at quarterback. Isn't it means that matt jones battle exactly. So i got to below average quarterbacks one of probably going to be closer to average this year and frankly as long as he's a core back that's a top twenty four quarterback. I think they can win ten games. I like the over. So here's what i think. I think it's going to be difficult for cam to be worse than he was last year. So if we say that's the floor. He's going to be better i think. There's there's reason for optimism If mack jones is better there's reason for optimism. These guys they added a lot of weapons for those guys. The offense last year was just it was just. It was an empty cupboard. I mean it. Was julian edleman and really nothing else. So now edmonds gone and has heard all year. Presumably jacoby myers takes over that slot role in. That's in the twelve personnel. Which that's why. They're going back to john smith and hunter henry so they can run more twelve personnel. You need that slot guides key. That's what new england's run on forever and ever and ever. I assume jacoby myers is going to be that guy but with these tighter and hunter henry. That's signing is underrated. Hunter henry was. He was the best target for just herbert last year. I mean that he was a big reason. Why justin herbert was the the breakout guy last year. So you add those wide receivers in. It's really totally revamped offense. And based on last year's offense it needed it so. I think there is reason for optimism. They've got a lot of running backs they don't have like a you know they they don't have a a a slam dunk number. One guy.

"Remember in. You've got to know a lot of these guys very proud of it. You know you think about rewards in sports. And i've had a chance to call three super bowl. Wins for super bowls in all for the patriots. But you know the feeling of pride also sadness at times. When i see you know what happened to to to some of the players that i that i either broadcast as football players or other athletes that i interviewed during my time. Maybe someone like a wrestler travis manion who was killed in combat who was interviewed as a halftime guest or lacrosse player. Like brendan looney Just to name a couple that were football players who who were killed as well I remember sitting next to a young lineman named ron winchester was from long island. Ron's dream was to be a marine like his grandfather. Ron was an offensive lineman. He again quintessentially. He was the quintessential navy. Midshipmen and quintessential offensive line. Just heart and soul salt of earth. Good guy unselfish. Now the kinda guy that you want your son to be and iran wanted to be murimi. You've always dreamed of being a marine like his grandfather. I believe his grandfather's name was dominic. Coty ron was later killed in the marine corps. And then you know on the flip side of that is the pride you feel and how may a good you feel when you hear from other players who might have been listening to the air force navy game because they woke up in the middle the night in in iraq afghanistan and they pulled in the broadcast on their computers to listen on the internet. Who is the that and the connection to for for me with the players didn't really start until they graduate because when they're at the academy they have no idea who you are. Just you're just running so regimented. They're not like under iphones all day. Like a lot of kids edna in your interaction with them is pretty limited and they just know. You're one of the media. Maybe they know you're the football announcer. He travels but they could care less. They just wanna get they get on the road away from the caddy. They just want to get some sleep and then play the game you know. They got enjoy their freedom. A little bit you know in the hotel the night before a game with their families but after they graduate. You're the connection when they go abroad because the games aren't brought maybe broadcast on the armed forces network on television or they can't get them if they're stationed overseas. But i can listen on the internet. And i found that a lot of players who i really didn't have a relationship with in annapolis eventually connected with me years later others a wide receiver that just recently was given his first ship. Command tyree barnes and he'd actually come to the patriots for short time after graduated For for training camp work. I get a chance to to work out with the patriots and spend a little bit of time in in a cap a number of years ago and went to the cfl for refile to audition. They're they're trying to argonauts didn't work out but he stayed in the navy and he is now in command of a ship. A minesweeper and i just felt even promoted. So that's awesome so do you try to When you're calling again try to you know bring back plays or memories from the past because you know that that you know midshipmen are listening to this all over the place you related to you lot of your own experiences on the recent experiences in a game which is what you do. I think typically with with any team you call. Yeah but there are times where you know we we did reminiscence or recall things that were not football related per se more related to what you and i are talking about but i think the big thing for me that i found to is urine escape for for for people there you know they they appreciate the fact that you treat the academy in its tradition in and the mission that all those midshipment have taken on with reverence and respect. That's very important. But at the same time they want they want to hear you say touchdown navy want you to get excited. When there's a touchdown and they don't mind if you criticise when the teams playing poorly or coach makes a a a bad decision. Like i said there was a stretch where they lost. Thirty games in in in in the span of l. Three seasons and there was no sugar coating any of those losses and for the place. They don't want to hear the the players in particular. Some of the fans appreciated the talk about how they tried and have dedicated. They are the players. Will here that you know. They don't want to be seen as overachievers i. I found that out from talking to a number players and coaches. When they're playing. Those games are the most important things in their lives in the moment they they don't they don't love footballer. Are competing any less than you know. A player at florida state or clemson or alabama. You know in any of the traditional football powers michigan notre dame there at the naval academy in a lot of ways because in a lot of cases because it's their chance to compete against the notre dame's of the world said is true. Yeah that that offense is probably a lot of fun to call to because how many times if you watch that offense you're calling the game and you have no idea who has the ball. I learned gusts very very early to keep the binoculars on. I'm the quarterback fullback the the whole play. Because you at times you get confused. It's easy to go with fullback. In the next thing you know the quarterback's running on the outside and he's pitching it to the call slot back in it's funny. I went from broadcasting navy games with the the midst even attempt to single pass to calling the patriots were they would go up tempo. Hurry up and tom brady be try. The ball forty.

"Charged with a crime checked all those boxes in this case. The player doesn't want to be here. The team under the right circumstances in value wants to trade him and he's in limbo legally the other issue in the seals back ray rice with punishments and being kind of rushing to judgment. They thought they were good. They said hey. We have part of the video. We have him admitting to criminal action. He got pretrial diversion. He got a two game suspension. They under punish him. That's what led to all this expansion of the personal comment policy and their investigative arm with lisa frail the former manhattan sex crimes prosecutor. That's investigating the deshaun watson case. And now that you have her and she was also ezekiel with domestic violence allegation. That got him six games with no criminal charges just him being investigated more than once and the nfl in that case they felt. Like we've got evidence in this one you have not unlike. The robert kraft situation where it's a different kind of massage parlor. We're talking about You know where he's on video. He's basically john better word down in florida. And they've got that and he was able to extricate himself because they were able to you know with some pretty heck pretty awesome lawyering to get him out of that but now you have a different situation and there are really very firm on that. Because they don't they say want to impede any investigation and i don't think commissioner's exempt should be this big deal like it's me. It's perfect remedy but just to give people a chance to get things done right. It's almost like a holding pattern right. We'll because what you can do. Then because honestly the texans you know. It doesn't benefit them that much because they have the pay salary for him doing nothing but now because he hasn't skipped camp he's not subject to the foreign so they get no discount on that number player. That's ninety nine point nine nine. Never gonna play for you again so if you are the nfl. Whose whose interests are you thinking about. Most of your thinking about public relations in the shield. But the texans are your next concern down watson would rank below that and what he wants and what the players think is fair all that and the fans even further down so you it's like is much as it looks like inaction they feel like they're following their policies and their standard procedures from what they've done before to me. Though watson is a special situation and requires you know special kind of wisdom if king. Solomon you have to really think about this and say what's best for all involved and while also not. Judging the case and assuming guilt victories grains he hasn't been charged with a crime. That's very important. Say yes there. Ten complaints filed against him but there is no charge. There's no indictment from a grand jury so that would change a completely. That's when it goes to defcon four. And you say okay. Well there's no way can play football this year. There's no path to it. I think that closes the door slams it shut until that's resolved and then the nfl can review everything about the evidence. And all that. I think it complicates a lot of. There's chew it's that are not part of the civil litigation so normally what happens. People dropped their complaints as a result of if they accept a settlement. But the hp depending on what evidence. They've gathered they can go forward and operate how they want to sean. Yeah i think commissioner's exempt. It'd be a lot simpler if hp d. had a ruling and said yeah. We're not charging at this time. And we've thoroughly reviewed and they can't look like they didn't do a thorough investigation. They're still looking into it. They're still actively this isn't like they've made a conclusion that could still go either way sportstalk. Seven ninety yeah man just think we're one of the biggest stars in a league and he's not gonna play quarterback form this year for a lot of reasons. Sportstalk seven ninety. Sean sows reshow. More with aaron wilson mice macos junior of houston astros. You're listening to sean salisbury. On sports talk seven nine lance mccullers out the performance. Your home for houston astros. Baseball rolling on shahnawaz. Not feeling his best. So it is going to be you and me and tyler and aaron wilson for the rest of this hour and keep you for the rest of the show until saying you could join us this morning instead of one. Three two one two five seven ninety plenty to get into. We'll get into some more of the rockets reaction trade deadline today. Major league baseball aaron. You'll be hit back out cam. you'll join us again with the sean update. Once you're out there in the nine o'clock hour about nine thirty we'll get you back on. Obviously we were talking about the distraction. I'm not one thing. I wanted to go back to mention the if there's if if if if there's any change of heart on the texan side that you do wanna play him. And that's that's my thing. I'm sitting here watching the situation. Play out i would be operating. This is just me if you're all about winning you're going to go out there with number. Four is your quarterback and you say that it will have a chance to happens if callum mcnair would have sit down with why hasn't county are even approached that at this point what happened in the lead up to the trade request. They had their breakdown. In communication to sean became upset. My understanding is that they then once cow apologized privately texted him to shine essentially ghosted. He didn't wanna talk anymore. It was over then my understanding if he had gone and met with him but he didn't know that that if he had met with him maybe there would have been some small chance of it and essentially the owner not know that because the communication isn't it's not an open line. It's a he doesn't have somebody telling him. Hey you need to talk to this player. He just sit down with doesn't wind up happening. Some of this my opinion some. That's what i've heard. They don't get to a point where there's like that in between where they have that conversation they didn't make this decision lightly like like it wasn't a spur of the moment. It was months of frustration pleading going all the way. Back to the hopkins steel. He almost didn't sign his contract extension. He had reservations but he did sign it. Which is a really important point. You made a commitment. He signed it four months later. He wants out whereas reservations the time he had concerns about the direction of the organization he wanted to be consulted with but he hey concerns about will. Is that a good football move. Why would we do that. The hopkins thing is really watershed moment in this going back to also it bothered him to find out on social just like everybody else and he wanted to be treated like part of the inner circle. He's also a very young guy. It's like we're not talking about like aaron rogers who's almost forty years old and wanting to be involved in finally now at the end the packers say hey. Yeah we'll give you a few things you you'd think cobbs a good idea. Texans okay. we'll give you a six. You pay three million eight point two five. These things are weighty. It's hard to get any power control. It's not the nba. Where lebron james is making calls on the lakers from what they should be doing and has so much juice. It's not a players league. It's an owners league and gm's league and coaches league and that's the difference here. Nfl you can talk about player empowerment. The shot had a chance to do something pretty unique but then it got complicated by his own cases. Whatever he did you in you know to catch those cases to have them you know civil lawsuits levy as an cases. But you look at the situation and squashing it it would just take. I think he'd have to come to. The texans almost hadn't hand like hey you know i've changed my mind but everything i've been told is it's even less likely because they haven't excused him. They're not having that kind of conversations are keeping loud conversations private. It's just nothing that they've done that they're working on because they've already set a course of action and changing their mind would take a dramatic change of thinking and one eighty that if the players not even open to it. What's the point of even going through all the pain and frustration of that kind of exercise. But you know what's the payoff. You know maybe you get your pro quarterback back in the fold and there's some in organization that would love to have that happen but i think a lot's going on and it's been A lot happened. And if anything when you make that trade request and you make it clear it's about ownership it's about these executives. It's about the team. You essentially have embarrassed the owner and that's a big thing is like you know the owners have cloud. They have the power she got a player essentially saying. Hey i don't wanna be part. I don't have anything to do with you. Then the player having these legal problems and then to think that and maybe stranger things have happened to say. Hey you know what. I'm good never mind all that. And i'll work on my cases playing for the texans doesn't make the civil things go away obviously doesn't make the criminal investigation any less likely or more likely to culminating anything. It's something that they could certainly sell from a public standpoint every like. Hey it's awesome. Yeah he stub your quarterback sure but what would make him change his mind like what's in it for him there other than if he was to believe and he does not believe and they don't believe because teams are interested in doing this and they know that because ever relationships they know general managers and coaches. He's with athletes i. It's a mega firm. They have all that information. They know that they don't know their privy to everything but that said they know enough to know that there's interest and he wants a fresh start to me this thing screams fresh start necessary both sides and we're just not there yet. It should happened. It hasn't and it is It's strange anything i've covered. I've covered. no ray rice. I've covered It was the year. After ray lewis gotten out of no the the murder charges and wasn't convicted and in the super bowl. Mvp and all that stuff so a year later just kind of seeing ray back on top after all that. Those are some of the things that i've been up close and personal with covering but you know you think about member. How big a deal. Ben roethlisberger was or michael vick and dogfighting. Michael vick with an leavenworth was convicted for killing dogs and the eagles were still able to sell it. Guess what you can sell this to and yes. We're in a different era and there's been a correction has been a reckoning about you. Know everything about women all those things and rightfully so. I would still say this. There are ways to once. You complete the everything you need to complete to reenter him out there and you know some people. They'll always think they think but just to be able to function and have him as your quarterback and be front facing with it. There's going to be a day where that can happen today. It might not be this season. He might be next year but eventually that day will happen. Shots will be throwing passes in the nfl in real game and be a fully-fledged franchise quarterback again. I believe that we're just never nowhere close to that at this point. That's exactly right. That's the voice of aaron wilson with us for the segment. Join us Here i have another question about calvin narrow. We'll get to that next here. On the sean salisbury. And he's got a lot to say about. Sean salisbury continues on seven hundred so good the morning genetic john salzburg show rolls on shaw. Taking the arrest of the morning off feels better not feeling great. So you got me heavy tyler. Sotos here and wills within this another segment. We're talking obviously the biggest sideshow of the campus. Been the sharon watts situation. But we're talking about the you know the ownership level has how involved is cal mcnair and everything. He's very involved. He when you say very involved is he meddling into football the at any point not at all what he when i say involved. He's kept in the loop he there's not like are they gonna tell him. Hey we're cutting dante krief. I don't think they have to do that. But if it's something involving to shawn watson how we handle this situation even you know okay. We're gonna have this kind of stance organizationally. Let's all have a meeting about it. They have a lot of communication. They have good communication untold. And you know. He's has total trust in nicotera to quarterback this thing along with david. Kelly jack easterby all the people that work there so he's not a hands off owner. no he hasn't been at practice. So far I expect him to be there at some point. But you know cows not the kinda guy. He's not jerry jones. he's not right season. He's not gonna be there trophy for city and saying this is braxton me hold up the lombardi the super bowl no way i mean cows more low key guy to say the least and at some point you know he'll be out there and you know shaking hands with reporters and things like that but he's not the kinda guy that's just gonna hold court where i see this happening. You know in terms of communication and what happens going forward. Something billy big pictures happening. Hey you know we've got some real offers on the table and let's discuss this and of course and he'll say what do you think. And if he you know if he has an objection to something yeah he would have no hesitation voicing it but he's an owner that he's been the owner for few years now since his dad. Bob mcnair passing. He's been involved since the beginning so he's been allowed. Proxies been a lot borer meetings. He's been to a lot of owners meetings he's got experienced to be in this seat and it's a really unenviable situation to be in to because it's hard to get a quarterback and then now because of the relationships he has with the organization because of things that have happened you know it's very strange l. and sub guys would say you know what a lot of this him. As one of the biggest mistakes i believe was having bill. Brian general manager and coach if they had not done that if they had not fired brian gain or if they'd hired another general manager. Let's say i think they're probably not in this situation. And all you know they would not have gotten to this point because in the personnel stakes trades mismatched value. The overpays on contracts. Like randall. cobb. You don't have that on. It'd be very unlikely that general manager would botch things and you impulsive that way. So they are where they are and you can't go back but i think the path out is how good people he did that. Nicosia ball counts a very capable executive. Very smart guy really hard working very disciplined person. You kind of saw some of that on display. In his press conference he controlled his press conference. He wasn't going to get off of his message and talking points and what he was going to say and what. He's an answer what he was not going to say. And you know from everyone. I've talked to about him guys in the scouting industry guys in coaching. The great things to say about nick his character how hard work and and being good evaluator and a good administrator and i know these are good negotiator. If you think about all the restructures they've done being able to get changed the roster this heavily what we don't know yet is. Are these moves going to be a lot of them. Good moves or some of them gonna fall flat. That's like anything. Somethings well some of the things. I you know some moves. I think are going to be good. Justin barrett philip lindsay maliki collins. So i think some of these things trading for shack lawson can have been ordered kennedy a misfit for the forty three. So you get an defensive end that can get after the quarterback. I'm really curious to see what does mccain is. we like. He made a lot of plays on the football yesterday. And he's you know their new nickelback so that's an upgrade. Certainly from how bad nickle was last year offense of line. You're seeing a lot of titus howard moving around not just playing right. Tackle the plant some guard flipping around trying to create some flexibility. It would have been good. If they could have gotten dennis. Kelly but i can understand him when the play for green bay instead of houston tim. Kelly's presence and he's going to a contender. He's walking into a starting job possibly wasn't going to be walking into one here yet. I think about it. We haven't seen the team hit. That's coming. I want to see what they look like him. Pads and then green bay. That won't tell you much we'll tell you a little bit and at some point will know. How competitive is this team going to be after jacksonville. If they can't be jacksonville we're going to know a lot about kind of seasons. May i think they can be jacksonville. And if they do then it's a ton of a different perception of them because yet and they're taking it personally saw the guy's yesterday i don't understand the felt me. I know that you get mad about stuff. I don't i think if you pay attention to media coverage of the texans. If you're a player you would know that. It's not about the players. Yeah i have no issue with the players the players. I hope that they have success. And we get. I deal with people on twitter twitter. You deal with people all the time. I think you just bag back back. It's it's it's about the ownership. It's about the the front office about what they've done as a franchise that's why people are pissed off. People say the things they do. It's not about the players right. Don't see a guy who's been here for two minutes. Be going to say like dude. Calm down what they in talking to players. I talked to a lot of them over the summer. Whether it's like a jacob. Martin or whitney mercilus philip. It's a similar theme of using it as motivational fuel because people are saying the akron win a game like shack loss and i talked to him over the summer. He saw something say we the worst roster who in he's like what is it computer nerds same. We've got a bad roster so they take it personally it just like if anybody said hey aaron your hack mayor bad writer or you know you guys are bad radio. You need to take personal. You could say you know what. I'll show you that you're wrong and you. You've made incorrect assessment of me. That's not fair that's not true. And everybody's different but it's certainly when a team this kinda going back the whole disrespect angle. It's kind of put out predictable response. If somebody says you're terrible you're gonna you're gonna feel some kind of way about it. And he was kind of funny. Amis lonnie says everything's like we're the scum bucket of the. Nfl is interesting. I mean it's just it's just an opinion. It's just somebody's opinion. It's nothing against the player. i. I don't think that the roster very good. I think it's a bunch of replacement level players that they've put on the roster. I could be completely wrong. Because i'm not in football and i watch this stuff everybody else but you replaced a bunch of guys that run a bad team with a bunch of one year deal type guys which some of them will play out and some of them all right. And there's injuries happen. That are going to change the season so and then also had to look at the quarterback situation. You want four games with an elite level quarterback tyrod. Taylor's there's nothing against him. He's not the shawn watson. It's hard to imagine a scenario where they're a good football team. It's interesting because i start with the nfl head coach over the summer about the texans real long conversation things when we were talking about. Houston he says. Hey they're going to be in a lot of close games. Because taylor will turn the ball over. They have good special teams. They'll have good field position and questions. Can they stop. Anybody at defense wasn't very good last year. How good is their overhaul on defense. It can score enough points. I just don't know. Are they winning. These close games is claiming ferber and kicking a field goal. Are they really going to be that much better. On defense they have A needed corner. Still i believe could exist. Howard ever make sense for them if they could do business the miami. I think it's unlikely once traded to miami howard wants a lot of money. Get make sure that he still playing at that. Top five level and what's the longterm about his knee. All that stuff is factors. But yeah i mean everything you're saying that's fair point about you know. Wire people skeptical because there are reasons you listed. We're gonna find out if they're a team. That is better than last year's win. Total worse sir. Better i tend to think they matched last year or they do a few games better than that if everything falls right and normally life things don't always fall right right. They need a lot of things to work out. And i think they have a chance to have a better running game. I know they're gonna make it more of an emphasis simply running the ball. More would help them last year. They got way off. Track that was too unbalanced. And you had to. Sean led the nfl passing ours but they went four games and was it. A great passing game knows him running around and in finding the open guy having having to ad-lib his off to get people into an open passing lane. Tyrod has some of that. It's different though. And just you know what i would expect from him. Steady numbers and you always worry about injury. Because he's had injuries before see. Then you've got you know. You gotta three davis mills out. There davis throwing the ball pretty well at camp so far. I'm impressed by him but he's not ready yet and i think he'll show them enough that he can be the backup and then school likely practice squad. If he's you know essentially your third quarterback.

"Was watching the north carolina game and told everybody go. Fight this guy. go look at this guy. I think it was more probably like hey europe players to look at. He looks at them determines. That player is interesting to him and then they go from from there so i suspect it's a lot of that. Too right scotty. Department is the one looking at these players all year long and more than more one year in in most in some cases they call their list down to number players and then they pushed that forward to the coaching staff and others and then it of goes from there so obviously being in charge of a lot of that certainly get credit. I i don't know if i can specifically say he's the one that said. Hey antonio gibson got turn before we fall in love with him. Go look at this guy. And it's got turner falls in love with him and now he's on the team so You know it's a combination of things office highly respected. I think he's i think he's you know he's do well. Hope he'll eventually be a league. I would imagine Atlanta obviously likes them. They signed himself get credit. But it's a weird dynamic of who exactly gets credit for what wendy's ideas start to germinate weeks months years in advance of wendy ashville picnics. And a lotta times. We don't hear about how it came about until years. After i mean j- you you mentioned jay gruden mad i in itis was his you know. scott mclean has set it jay. Gruden his senate mad. I night as he fell in love with ionitsis tape. You know i. I'm reminded is were sitting here talking that scott mcclellan said I know he told me this on a podcast That jay gruden at of all the coaches he's ever worked with head. Coaches was by far and away the best evaluator of college talent and jay gruden when he was on my podcast and i know he was on yours as well Over the last six months. I told him that and i said do you think that's know a strength of yours and he said it's these strength and i remember saying something like well. Why don't you just want it. You go into that. Why don't you become a gm But he always felt like he was really good. You know and i think back to like the brandon. Sheriff comment remember. We got we got. We had a receiver. We've got a guard in the first two years. But yet but i also know that he was in love with trae quinn and wanted them to draft trey quinn in the fourth round and they were essentially saying you know. Slow it down. We're gonna be able to get him. We're going to be able to get him. And you know trae quinn's head injuries and i don't even know if he's still in the league anymore Who do we know anything about how the acquisition of players works now like mayhew herni stokes polian grabble run. It's cetera. do we have any sense. says to. Who's handling what. I know her knees on the road. More than mayhew But how how. what's your sense of. You know the front office hierarchy responsibilities. Yeah i mean. I think it's kind of what you Hernias out there adam on the road. "One lebron james junior or brawny your coach cal and you you had your pick. You can take either player. That's they're still and they're still ranked about the same which one and they would either question. Who do you want. You want brawny or do you want read shepherd. Let's say they're equally is good. Just for sake of argument. I hate to say it but i think you have to take bronze kid. Just that perspective lebron coming to your games and other recruits nationwide are gonna know that other may not know jeff sheppard and stacey read. But you're gonna know. Lebron james lebron james being there could pay off for recruiting and like you said for years to come get the chance to bring the and one of the greatest players of all time. It's not even close. You're taking brian. Yeah i mean no offense to read you shake his hand but that would be the best scenario for just having stuff to talk about. Lebron's comes to kentucky read. Shepherd goes to little help by good or even vice versa. Even if we don't want that we don't want lebron ski that little. That's what i'm saying. It'd be crazy either way. But that would be i the storylines better if lebrons kids at kentucky cow picked cow. That's like the epitome of cow. He picked the nba over kentucky. Yes he would. That would be everything everybody thinks. That thinks that would be in a nutshell and ryan. It would be the right decision to do. It would be and we talked about it when shack son was considering kentucky. Where like we don't care if he can play or not. You want shacks on on your roster. You beat the most popular program in the country year. Yeah that's really that's really interesting. You've heard me talk about kentucky comeback on this show the initiative from kentucky chamber bit making improvements to the state's approach to addiction. You can learn even more on tuesday. Final statements more the blue lights across the bluegrass county by county tour presented by the kentucky office of highway safety after this to talk to matt jones and the crew called the clark's pump and shop phone line at five zero. Two five seven wanted eighty or one eight seven seven nine four two navy blue and kentucky. Sports radio talk radio format sports radio so something happened in miami. What happened in mind. Is that the The building that fell down. So i i don't the condo building fell. This collapsed fell down. Yeah think that well this morning. When i saw the story they were still looking. They're still searching to see if anybody was trapped to. That's awful yeah. A building just fell down the twelve storey condo store. Yes there might. You think there'd be a lot of people in there wouldn't it. Yeah it did. In the morning it was in the middle of the night. Wow even worse. Yeah that's awful sorry to hear that five. Five seven one eighty six machine seven seven to seven seven four five two five four new poll found that kentucky is the kindest state in the union fifty states they ask people have been treated in these states. Kentucky was the kindest state in the entire country. the top ten were kentucky. New mexico was second then. Oklahoma georgia and north dakota right with the least friendly. The least friendly take a guess. Go for new york. New york was surprisingly thirty. Six somewhere in the northeast. I'm going gonna guess. That's what i would have thought none of none of the well. One of them's kind of in the northeast. The least well first of all fifth least kind oregon then florida. I think that's good. Florida yeah then arizona. Kansas was forty nine. Who knew kansas such jerks and the least friendly state in the country is maryland. That's northeast kinda. it's like right. There on the maryland is delete so first of all right. Do you agree. That kentucky is the kindest state that does not surprise me. People in the state are wonderful. No matter where you go western kentucky eastern kentucky in the big city it doesn't matter great. Bright people in this state. I think that's the thing. I love about kentucky is i would just say this ricky jones jones is be like i'd be like i need to take you to eastern kentucky. You'd be like oh no. I don't think they'd like me. I'd say you know what they wouldn't like what you said that they'd still be nice to you ryan. They feel like one. I want you to eat dinner with them. Like that's the thing people don't realize is that you know the folks here have strong views on things and etc but you know what at its core. Everyone is nice. that's why i love this state. I mean the fact that they embrace aas is an example of that. So i am not surprised. I spent some time in maryland. I i didn't say. I didn't think it was particularly friendly. I wouldn't have necessarily thought it was the least i would have put new jersey number one. Yeah i thought new york new jersey if he wanted to new york gets a battle bad rap. I think new york is free. I mean it's not like friendly like they don't just stop to talk to you on the street but if you get in conversations with people in new york. I've always found them to be pretty. I mean they're jerks everywhere. But like especially if you go into the outer boroughs you spend a lotta time there shannon. No you agree. I don't think it's the unfriendly. Yeah it's hit and miss. But i mean i'm sure it's like that in a lot of states but there have been some very friendly people that i've met in new york. I would have said california last. Because i don't think i feel like they're all laid back there you know but that doesn't mean they're friendly. They're kind of like too cool for school. Okay eating their avocados. And yeah everybody's like so like you know. Yeah look at me bro. That show on netflix. Where they're selling real estate in la. We've talked about it before it's called like sunset strip. It's the girl from kentucky on it ryan. You know what i'm talking about. Yeah you talking about what's the name of it can't think of any way i've watched every season. I can't remember remember. But like those people awful except girl from kentucky and it makes me think that's kind of what california could be what's up with my man man man. Your blinkers off. You got your blaker man. He's trying to stick it. Don't do stick. We like will as will you know what i mean. He's now trying to do stick. Yeah just be will try. Get when you're not gonna do stick bar go ahead bar for someone who so. I just move down to florida. I disagree with Saying they're not a friendly state. i'd say on internally state is ohio. But reason i called. I think how could be unfriendly. Not everywhere but there but yeah i think yeah. I think that's a bad call. Some of its can be friendly. But i agree some of. It's not. yeah so. I was calling because there's four teams left in the nhl and nba. We've had a lot of close games. I was wondering who you out gonna win for all right. I still think ryan in the nhl. You got islanders and tampa bay game seven. I'm for the islanders. I've been to islanders playoff game. So i enjoy it. I still will probably say tampa bay wins. I'll put the canadians in the other one. So i'm gonna say tampa bay montreal and in the nba. I think it's i think the bucks are gonna win. I was gonna pick the clippers. But now i think i'm going back to the sun so i'll say bucks sons. What about you. Yes sons are up now too. But i think what the clippers also down to their last series. They've been down in every series to. I'll have they really man. I don't know something about the suns team hundred sons for sure. What's the what's the bucks hawks series right now. No going bucks one game. Yeah go hawks. I go hawk sons that would be. Can you imagine if you bet on that before. The things started sons that from the most random series ever. Who would you take. I'd go buck sons in the nba. Nhl vegas and tampa. Yeah definitely tampa. I picked him last year. Just because my parents live down there. No nothing about him. I just know. They're all over the newspaper when i go down there tampa bay. Yeah let's go to jay. what's up. Jay hey guys take quick story about the sprint football that you mentioned and then just a couple quick comments as well Ron and get a kick out of this so my brother graduated quarterback in the late eighties and its head. Coach at the time was actually tony. Franklin he went on to west point and played sprint football then Serve his time and now he's a head coach for the army sprint football team and they play eleven on eleven. It's basically regular football. It's eleven eleven so the linemen or even one hundred and eighty pounds. Yes and matter of fact there is a cool clip that. Espn did on sportscenter. But i'll find. I'll try to copy ron on to do. They have to weigh in before the game starts like somebody like steps on the skill day of the game. They're overweight healthy. You know that with like the high school sports that they to have some sort of procedure. Alto ian wright. Yes so like i. I would say light boxing. There is a way in. it's not the day of the game so there are situations where They are watched carefully of taking care of but they do have to meet a weight class. But i think There might be twenty four to forty eight hours between that way in. And i got real quick one point real quick one point real quick with the shares ruling. What about during this was done. Probably ryan impart to recruit jalen. Durham and. i'm being number player. In america. there are reports came out. Come out yesterday from jack. Pilgrim and travis graph that he now maybe leaning college. And it's going to be kentucky or memphis man. You get the number one player in america. I mean everything. Changes for kentucky. We're gonna spend some time tomorrow talking about that. Because i knew this was coming and i wanna see what that kid says. Now after this. But ryan i mean the number one player in america may be about to come here and i don't think people even totally realized that his visit is this weekend. Yeah and ironically. This announcement comes out now. They can sell that to him as well when he's campus. So that's a big big thing ryan ks bar. I will be there tomorrow so you can go out there lunch or dinner tonight or meet with us. We'll there tomorrow round. i'll sit outside. doing show. drew will be there as well tomorrow. You got oh vw tonight. Fifteen and under free. I'm also giving away five hundred dollars of cash to sell saw that. Yeah just handed out somebody there. I'm gonna generous. Moved in plus be. Yes and then saturday night. We already have one sort of celebrity coming here like say they're not coming to perform. They just wanna watch. They're bringing their kids. Oh they're going to sit there and see chained carnage off. See shannon get hurt. I tried to give sheriff hundred dollars but he took it in all of the ring dot picked it up. And that's why. I'm giving away this weekend. So hey thank you folks very much for listening. The press conference data will change college. Sports in kentucky will be in thirty minutes. I'm not sure where you can watch it. Watch somewhere. I'm sure there's been k. As.

"But a a a legend left behind. So there's absolutely quality play going on Both in the league between the two teams certainly the stars themselves. But i gotta think too. I must have been a hell of a lot of fun being in and around the organization. Because i got to think there was some spillover into movies and television terms of filming of stuff cameo appearances both either of stars and or players In each other's endeavors. Was there a true hollywood connection so to speak a slightly. I can't tell you but there definitely was. Which ones can't you tell me. We'll talk later. I look for example at the cover of of the nineteen fifty. Seven album by andre previn president in yes the double play album with the The beautiful We believe topless though Tastefully done A model wearing hollywood fashionably fashionably wearing hollywood stars Cap but you know. I'm sure most of these people are not around anymore. We're we're certainly interested in any sort of interesting little tidbits. Well a couple of share things with are still around and they made me. I'll say there was some. There was some teasing going on during games Between players and female fans who were as a one player in particular told me where the biggest female actresses in hollywood and they would or would not wear certain things in order to tease the players. But i'll leave it at that without getting into too much additional detail. There were on the diamond. How 'bout that there you go there. You go There were players who dated some actresses. There were there were great friendships. Chuck stevens shared that Jimmy stewart sat near first base in and stuart and his wife often had Chuck and his wife to their home for dinner Gail patrick who bob cops. First wife later She was married to the literary. Agent cornwall jackson and they lived on a huge estate and on mondays. They would bid barbecues and pool parties for the players and their families Players would golf with bing crosby and yes this did this did Evolve into motion picture opportunities and bill. Frawley who was fred mertz on. I love lucy as you alluded to earlier Films that he was in kill the umpire being one. He would If they needed Extras y you know he would arrange for hollywood players to come in and be the extras the the stratton story. There's a lot of hollywood players that were the extras in pride of the yankees The lou gehrig biopic that the long distance hitting sheen's were done by babe. Herman because gary cooper just couldn't pull it off. He was not left handed. He was not tremendously atlantic and they actually pulled a babe. Herman hollywood stars in there and they they had to make them long shots so that people would not quickly recognized it was herman but yeah they in a number of movies and then there were movies like seven eleven ocean boulevard. A great crime film. That was actually shot in gilmore field during a hollywood stars game. The jackie robinson story. That was shot. Partly and gilmore field. So yeah there were a number of stars players who Got parts in in motion pictures or norin told me a fun story that they figured out a little bit about how things worked and what they could get away with and there was a particular game seem that was going to be. Shot to wrapped up filming. It was going to be the last day the players were needed and this particular scene called for a ball to hit to centerfield and for him to make a throw to third base and nor and intentionally airmailed the throw way over the head of the third baseman so that they would have to be brought back the next day to shoot the scene again and all the players get an additional days. Pay but Yeah it was a number players got a great opportunities. And and then his television evolved and they were game shows and whatnot. They got opportunities there in the mid to late fifties as well i gotta think being a a player for the stars and maybe the angels as well Short of being in the major leagues. This is probably the best kind of situation you could be in. Given all the ancillary benefits that come along with it there were the there's stories abound players. Bilko was one in particular that was making so much with the angels that he didn't want to go to the big leagues there. There were guys that were very very content and very happy To to be in the pacific coast league in particular being in southern california at that time. George genevieve's when he was taken in the rule five draft by the washington senators. He shared with me that when he went into negotiate his contract. They offered him five thousand. Which at that time was the major league minimum in nineteen fifty and he argued that playing for hollywood he had made bit over six thousand the year before and the senators wouldn't budge but Yeah those guys did well financially and of course there were a lot of different opportunities. Many of the guys worked in the community and had jobs in the off. Season there And i it just enhanced the popularity the clubs guys would work in sporting goods stores or would sell cars and and people would come to buy from them specifically so it was. It was quite a unique environment in any unique unique time in baseball history. Well sadly though as the fifties rolled on it all comes to a somewhat crashing halt. Maybe you can sign a kinda give a little bit of i think most fans kinda know sort of I guess the the rest of the story so to speak. But what's it like in those years. Just prior to the dodgers and the giants Dramatically making their move. I was there a sense amongst the stars and the organization that This wasn't going to last much longer that that. Mlb would at some point. Just adjunct at some and make This team and the pacific coast league kind of second tier and were banished. It if you will away from you know as the big leagues. How much notice do you think people kind of knew and felt. Did they knew they were on a short Leash so to speak or what. What was sort of the dynamic. A prior to this move of the big leaguers to to the west coast. well And i don't think that the people running clubs in the coastal ever felt that they were not going to get. I think they remain confident. They could get that major league status that they had a lot of confidence. I wasn't shared around them. But cobb in particular really felt strongly that that was going to happen and they. They knew that you know i mean. He was hedging his bets and bought a piece of class. C or d club in phoenix and rebranded at the phoenix stars. And part of his motivation was to be able to own the territory. So if they had to relocate the hollywood stars they were gonna take him to phoenix But at the same time in nineteen fifty two. He had been invited by the chief of police to come up into the hills North of downtown los angeles to the police academy and when cobb met with him up there he looked around and he was he was really taken and he felt that this area chavez ravine was the ideal place for a ballpark and and he brought a close friend up the next day who agreed. They talked about the area. Would one day be served by three. Freeways and cobb was just convinced he had found the ideal site for a ballpark for the hollywood stars and he hired a renowned architect stiles clements and they developed a plan for stadium Stadium had It was decades ahead of anything in baseball. It had restaurant it had cocktail lounge childcare. It had They call them cabannes. Which today we call sweets..

Chuck Bilko five thousand Jimmy stewart fred mertz Gail patrick today southern california two teams gary cooper Chuck stevens Frawley three cobb mondays mid to late fifties seven eleven ocean boulevard one player both cornwall jackson

"Hello again this time from the sports byline update. That's where i'm always keeping score tonight on the court and the nba the raptors drop a six straight following a one sixteen to one twelve loss to the pistons. James harden hattie forty ten fifteen a triple double and the nats of one twenty four to one fifteen win over the pacers. The bucks beat the seventy sixers one nine to one zero five washington fell to sacramento one. Twenty one to one. Nineteen the bulls allowed the spurs to come back from twenty three down to win one zero six to ninety nine. No luck for boston tonight. As the celtics fall one seventeen to one ten to the cavaliers huston hits straight loss number eighteen fall into golden state one away into ninety four denver tops charlotte one twenty nine to one zero four and the heat fell to the grizzlies eighty nine to eighty five. Dallas beat the la clippers one five to eighty nine over the ice in the nhl. The nuxie neither shootout to beat the senators three too but in doing so have now won six of their last seven. The rangers beat the flyers up. Nine thousand nothing. Nikola scored a fifty five seconds into time to give the jets reportedly win over the canadians. Darryl sutter got his first losses coach of the flames they fall seven to three oilers. Saint louis loss to the kings Out los angeles kings for two one and vegas edge out san jose five four. And that's all. I have back over jeff all right. Thanks for that jen. Welcome back to foul territory at sports overnight. America everyone we are going to introduce or keep it going with the by the numbers segment here on the program and i figured we'd start at a local place and that would be the logical starting number number one and what we're looking at folks is players that wore the number players that He wore the number probably hopefully We're talk about our favorite teams. And i am not just speaking french here. Got shane scenic. Joining me this segment and We'll talk about I let's play it out there. Shane i am from cleveland. Ohio i have an interest in the local teams here in the phoenix market of been here about twenty years You're kind of from everywhere But you have family in the area. So it's chiefs and royals but You currently reside in denver. Which is a Kind of a weird place to be giving. You're giving your rooting interest You don't have that thing going on with the buffaloes and the missouri tigers anymore but The chiefs and broncos make up for plenty there. When when i graduated the tigers were visiting see you and i was when i was in the prime of utah fandom was malone and stockton and i was hated hated in this town and the in the broncos always hit each other and missouri was descending colorado's decent saving like each other so it was a tough time for all of my rooting interests like you said so Missouri being in the sec alleviates a little bit of that. The jazz and nuggets So competing at the top of the division. But the blazers are there as well and it's not they don't have quite the polarizing characters of of stockton and malone so it's been a little bit calmer and the broncos And the chiefs rivalry is still pretty strong. All right. let's start with your favorite teams not necessarily the local teams to you but The ones football are kind of few and far between You know you've you had warren moon for years You had cam newton more recently and then you've got the lakes murray and i don't know for how long but to tugela wearing the number one. It die if it doesn't go to a quarterback because of nfl rules It's typically going to either be on assigned or assigned to a kicker or punter until they enable the other skilled positions other than quarterback To wear single digit numbers. When when you told me about the idea here you like you said we started looking at all of the players that had been on my favorite teams in the chiefs. Have number one kickers lockdown and pro bowlers. Like we talked about not being pro bowl is not necessarily being The biggest Metrics for greatness but a lot of kickers in the in history Wore number one and then like you said warren moon played for the chiefs for a little while but yeah especially in the nfl. There's you know so many players that on so many so many numbers can go to certain sections of players that you're not gonna see a lot of variations of. It's not like a quarterback or kicker. You're pretty much stuck in not having a great number one refresh my memory. Warren moon's era with the chiefs falls between which two quarterbacks or a circle this year's ninety nine to two thousand which i believe was montana and then it was bono and then i think it was gurbachan. Then moon okay. Okay okay gary back. I gotta think through the san francisco cycle to get me to the ninety s chiefs. 'cause always where they went. Yeah all right. Don't you even went to california people. That didn't even play in college with castle. So any type of california quarterback just ended up going to the chiefs. That's hilarious all right. I have listed on this super nonscientific site noland. Supernet smith led the afl in kick return yards in nineteen sixty seven. So you gotta go all the way back pre merger which obviously predates the both of us lawrence tines. I think that. You said nick lowery. They ever have a skop layer. Come through town there. i don't think so. It's really funny. That the number one. I mean nick. Lowery probably is a borderline. He's i think he's a ring of famer. But he's he's a very good kicker johnston route one of the. i think. Still the only kicker in the hall of fame and he wasn't even number one and then he played for the cheese. So i don't. It's just so hard when you have a limited type of player personnel that can take the number one And most of those. I mean bornstein's of two thousand four to two thousand six and i don't think there's been anybody that's really warned that with pride since then. That's that's absolutely well. How how'd you weren't moon. Do for the chiefs. He played for one season and he was forty one at the time. I think he was somewhere in his late thirties early forties so i think they were trying to resurrect. I think he was right before that. He was with the vikings. I think he had a pretty good season and they brought him in to try to be the stopgaps of all stopgaps like they did when they talked about. You know bono durbach until they got the tread green. They had not much success with everybody that came in through there so he was He was on par with those before him. And after him. Otherwise known as mediocre. It's a lot of kickers. In the single digit luis aguilar potter from the ninety s. Johnston ordered wore number. Three aguilar. argue are worn over five ryan soukup or number six year incumbent kicker harrison but kicker dot com. He has he's been number seven since the two twenty seventeen season. Nick lowery were eight. Then you finally get to position players between steve fuller and bill..

steve fuller Shane ryan soukup Twenty cleveland Nikola Nick lowery forty Dallas moon eight nick lowery Ohio forty one five twenty three malone california ninety four seventeen

Isis returns to its insurgent roots

"ISIS is returning to its insurgent roots having been driven out of almost all the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria four years after ISIS controlled as much as a third of Iraq declared a caliphate. It is retrenched, but it's still the power to carry out kidnappings killings and bombings. Khloe? Cornish took to Andrew England about the continuing threat posed by the group to stability in the region. In two thousand fourteen ISIS notes the blitz across Iraq and Syria. And at one point I think they control about third of Iraq and major cities in both countries. What's been happening in the last couple of years since the caliphate will the self declared caliphate has been defeated all the situation being in terms of how they've been pushed back from their strongholds. Rockford. It'd be Iraqi government declared a military victory over I his about this time. I should having won back control of major urban areas. Which I is it invaded include the northern city of Mosul Iraq's second largest city. So that was a fight that nasty three and number players involved. That's the fighters from the Iraqi army which had initially kinda crumbled in two thousand fourteen faced with the ISIS insurgency, you have Kurdish vices mcken fun region. You also had low of shin initial groups who had formed pretty much in response to the ISIS threats that was facing Europe. It was big big movement to mobilize additional fighters to protect the country. And a lot of those groups actually have a radian bucking. So all of these people working not always very well together. There was also west and involvement as well. Intensive ashtrays on ISIS targets in Iraq. So that's how that fight with paying out. And then in Syria, the situation is actually more complicated because the fight against ISIS is just one really the much larger civil war. So in Syria, ISIS territory was concentrated in the north east of the country on the big cities rocker and data which probably will be familiar to people. Now, you will probably see the social glasses destination of those cities under the weight of US leda strikes. So in Syria, ISIS is in fighting on the one hand Russian-backed pro regime Syrian forces with Iranian involvement and on the other hand US backed Syrian rebels. So it's actually been facing kind of both sides of the civil war and Russia and their Resor fell from ISIS control this year amid much lodge. Hush by the feeling of as well, so retake areas in the south the country. So there was basically a big effort by local and international forces to push them back in both countries. What do we know about what remains in terms of the ISIS fighters? Isis supporters across these two companies. At one point in August, the US apartment defense was saying there about three thousand ISIS fighters in this pocket in Syria, the this territory they control, but it's very important to be cautious about them. The I think it's very hard for us to know, exactly. How many fighters they're all lest and how many schools is they have across Iraq and Syria. But we do know where I this is holed up in Iraq. They've got we think they is in the hammering mountains, which a very very Thakin offense mountains kinda the middle of a rock, and they don't say tax from that. And then they will they will have more bases a more positions in northerner as well. And there's continuing worry about sleeper cells of ISIS, fighters and other parts of the country as well. You mentioned the being pushed out of the major cities they controlled in the major church they controlled house they adopted the way the carrying out attacks. Because they do continue to pose a threat as we've mentioned. Yeah. Absolutely. I just thought it at a terrorist insurgency and then gained these huge swathes of territory. Very frightening. Modern two thousand fourteen and what they've done is returned to the insurgent route that they came from much smaller terror attacks people just disappeared into the desert rose and trying to hold her Trie. So that seems to be the strategy now is to continue to destabilize these areas with smaller hit and run attacks, but still deadly unfortunately for civilians and officials who have against targeted in Iraq. What impact is that heaven? I mean, obviously in Iraq this chiefs ways the county Sedikh control, which has to be rebuilt about reconstruction. The need to get people who were forced out of the homes back and these areas which always felt very marginalized slightly by bike dad and was a new government in Baghdad. What impact is it having? Terms of Iraq and Iraq's ability to build on the security gains. And then in Syria where we're seeing the civil war is winding down as prison. Bouchara sats voices have reclaimed control of most of the country and get mentioning just how much progress hasn't Nate unsecurity interactions on his was holding touchy. Yes, they all these kinds of attacks. But the Iraqi security forces constellation is vice is happening execution type outweigh. However, you know, is people continue to feel threatened by ISIS attacks that really undermines any kind of official assets to restore stability in the sense of security as well in these places. I think it called me stress. Just how dangerous life can still feel. I think in face it might be better than before. But if I this is coming to your village and killed the most important tests and in that village issue the local chief, which is confident analyst of seen them doing. That contributes to a sense of instability in Syria. This is the of most active fighting still in Syria to try and expel ISIS from the last pockets territory, and so you have continual battle casualties that. But of the overall civil War, I suppose, the American involvement there is the most important thing because America's said it's in Syria in order to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS, and so obviously the longer that they have to fight. I enjoy the longer they're gonna be there they north. They started to link that crisis in Syria to Iranian presence as well. And they want to be honest to see Iranian forces in Iranian proxy forces also being expelled from Syria. But the continuing bustle against I means America continues to have military presence into it as well. At one point when they controlled large areas in Syrian Iraqi Lee had oil resources that smuggling results the customs, they had taxes, etc. How they survive today. Does this indicate that perhaps they still have certain areas where they still have support. What do we know about what sustaining them? I guess it's important to stress how wealthy ISIS was at one point. It had opened up by volts that had huge oil revenues, and they invested some of that money into companies anything for money exchanges car dealership, and I think it's pretty hard for the authorities actually pinpoint which companies they beat in order to to function or stop them from operating. So what we understand believe that they get revenues from these companies, they also can stop and extort trucks on roads, and that kind of thing, so certainly they've knees are much much diminished. They are much much week before the nab were, but they do still have revenue. Streams coming in one of the notable things about twenty fourteen was her the Iraqi security forces, which the Americans have spent billions of dollars rebuilding of the invasion in two thousand and free melted away when they were faced with the fruit of ISIS, how it quits to the Iraqi forces. Forces to continue maintaining the offensive against ISIS and prevent a resurgence. I mean that would seem to be one of the critical things going forward. I think we'd have to say that the Iraqi forces are stronger than they were full. However, the US department defense expect to general recall, I said, I've how the fight against ISIS going. Deep highlight socks. They didn't think Americans would be able to leave Iraq anytime soon intensive needing to keep providing support to the Iraqi security forces one of the things that diplomats stress here as well, which they sometimes feel like they're not being heard back in their home capitals. Is that I it is not done thing. He's quite far off didn't thing in the and in that regard is going to need to be continuing the just ical and probably material support full voltage contracting. Is it not an easy thing to do counterinsurgency is in some ways. Much harder execute than ground offensive in love wage. You know, you don't know coming from. It's a difficult thing to do. And certainly the Americans in fact that the Iraqis are going to need help with it for the foreseeable featuring ever since the US invasion in two thousand and free ousted Saddam Hussein the have been sectarian shoes and publicity extremism in a country, which is now run by the Shia majority, people would say that's helped fuel the extremism that ISIS has been able to tap into. Do you think that those issues have been tackled have been dealt with? And how important will that be going forward when the new government in Baghdad looks to rebuild and reconstruct areas that came under ISIS control? I mean, exactly as you say they'd been real continuity in fans is a long-standing trending towards extreme in amongst some communities in Iraq sent doesn't three hundred before is well and the government now needs to do. It can to restore service days and its authority in some of these areas happen just so badly damaged by war. But we're also neglected before the ISIS insurgency and before people decided to join you can see. So, you know, it was just politics and conflicts, very localized in Iraq. But you can see there was a broader trend towards any extremes. And I think actually that has been a swing by though. I mean, I was just so brutal. That polling suggested the obscene. He's actually will let in favor of more hardline version of is not not the people. So I did. So in some senses, they lost support that says to me in a country where there have been real kind of weaponization and sectarian identity. This is not a problem. That's going to go away without tackling some of the courses.
