Senate Ends Hope for Significant Wage Hike

"So we got the senate doing their senate thing today. Right to vote a rama. There's all these amendments and there was standoff happening in something that happened there today. A seven democrats and one independent who caucuses with democrats joined with republicans to shoot down raising the federal minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour as part of the biden cove. Relief package among those democratic. Novo's joe manchin of west virginia. Chris coons of delaware. The moment that really stood out was when arizona democrat. Kirsten cinema walked up to cast her. Vote miss cinema cinema. No out she represents arizona. Maybe that was a homage to the late. John mccain. Who famously did that to that. Repeal vote but that full thumbs down from arizona helped end hopes for a really big wage hike that the congressional budget office says directly affect seventeen million american workers on a bringing maria. Teresa kumar co founding president and ceo voto latino fetchacure former senior adviser senate democratic leader harry reid and current advisor to bernie sanders. Faz let me start with you. I want people to understand this. Vote before we analyze us. This was a vote that was going to fail either way. It was essentially a symbolic message. Vote because it needed sixty votes filibuster -able so going into this. Everyone knows it's not gonna be talking to pass. No republicans are going to vote for it. So it's a free ride. It's a layup you get up there and say yes. We want to fifteen our minimum wage. So it was very very surprising to me. A lot of people to see democrats eight of them in the caucus vote. No what is your explanation. Of course you've got to go back in history. A little bit where. President obama suggested raising the minimum wage to ten ten. It was hillary clinton during the two thousand sixteen campaign who suggested raising it to twelve. It was bernie sanders. Who's been pushing along with you to raise the wage to fifteen dollars an hour. And as a result of that we have gotten a lot of progress in the democratic caucus and not all the way clearly and painful. Chris you take senator cinema arizona's got a twelve dollar minimum wage. And in fact if you look at raise the wage which gradually raises the minimum wage to fifteen dollars over five years it would be at twelve fifty by year. Three which is where harris zona is so many ways it doesn't really impact arizona and yet you have center for cinema denying many people. Millions of people around the country are arrays of their wages. Maria wha what did you make so. I used to work in congress. A- as a hill staff for a long time ago on preparations and this was fairly unusual. Because what those eight did was say. That they were not going to deliver the biden agenda in the biden administration. Right now is going to figure out how to channel little lbj and demonstrate that there are consequences when there are not voting down for the presence agenda. As you mentioned. chris. This was a layup but i have to say when we when we witnessed this thumbs down by cinema. I think for a lot of folks people felt at at odds because when john mccain did it it was to save healthcare for millions of americans when she when she did today was turned down. This idea that there was going to be some sort of economic closer to economic committee. For millions of americans and fifteen dollars has even fifteen dollars does not keep pace with the with the inflation rate of the nineteen. Seventies the raiders really. I established it was perplexing on many many fronts but this is an opportunity really for joe biden to say. You're going to have to come down to the white house because we're gonna have a talking

How to Keep Computers Happy Using Chemistry

"I'm joined today by dr ugo. Sharma from cas which is a division of the american chemical society. Cas specializes in organizing and analyzing publish scientific data that informs researchers through their search platforms such as science finder and has also being used for customers learning analytics applications. I'm also joined by charles river. Scientists dr david clark. Who's a enthusiast together. We will be discussing the role of machine learning and chemistry how we can train computers to support researchers and how he can keep machines happy with high quality data. Welcome ugo and david exe my. Thanks mary me too. So i wanna start by getting our listeners on the same page. Can we discuss the difference between machine learning and true a i in which is really more valuable for chemists realistically sure. Yeah so we're gonna start by defining ai to a is it's really a broad concept refers to machines with intelligence and for the purposes. Here we can define intelligence is the ability to solve a problem so machine learning is actually a component of i. It's has subset and machine. Learning actually enables a system to learn by itself for chemists specifically a is the ultimate goal so using computers to speed up discovery and innovation and machine. Learning is really. What gets the work done here. And especially within applications like drug discovery so essentially you know leveraging computers to and existing data help reduce the available candidates face potential targets and some used to accelerate and reduce costs for drug discovery. This is really where rubber meets the road. And so you know africanus. There's other applications around things like molecular property. Prediction were trying to predict things like solubility melting points. You know all of these things. Leverage machine learning using known molecules in their properties the sort of predict properties for for new molecules that were unsure of other applications around molecule design. So medicinal chemist a lot of time designing new molecules variety of applications and then another sort of hot area right now. For a and chemistry's retro synthesis says basically when you have a given molecule using ai to predict viable pathways to actually synthesize that molecules becoming a pretty key area so for a drug discovery standpoint. David which part of this process is one of the most valuable for chemists like in terms of being able to analyze giant piles of data and come up with something useful. At which point is that the most useful for you a. A human chemist various levels of usefulness. I mean for many years. Chemists have been taking data and deriving predictive models from it in perhaps long before people were thinking of this as i. But i think one of the really breakthrough applications of i that i've seen in recent years has been the so-called de novo design of compounds where and i has been trained on a very large database of known drug molecules and then asked to invent some new truck molecules or truck candidate molecules that resemble What it's been trained in some way up. Put us still different enough to be innovative and useful. So they'll be props molecules that have same types of collectively and fiscal chemical properties up at an unless novel in terms of their chemical structure. So i think it's really those as we've been mentioning taking very large sets of data and bringing new discoveries are of them that you know you just couldn't do that with a a human person. Is that the. The task is too great it so easy for people to get stuck in their own knowledge space. If you like not be able to think outside that whereas the machine has no preconceptions if you like can come up with something that's truly novel. Yeah so the machine theoretically can know every chemical every drug that has been patented the formula for all of them and it can sift through that and find ones that haven't yet been tried but it can do more than that can at ugo it can also predict what kind of chemicals might actually hit a biological target. Yeah exactly so. I think that's sort of a especially with you. Know things that are going on in the world right now around. The pandemic is understanding mechanisms that can produce a specific kind of biological activity like like antivirals inhibiting well replication finding molecules that can sort of work along those pathways in all of this is based on leveraging existing data so using previous research Training up models we can learn relationships between things like structure and activity and then applying those models to new data. Or you know. Maybe drug already been approved to repurpose them as therapeutic agents. Yeah so bringing it back to your company Can you describe what see as does as kind of an elevator pitch sir. Sorta the short version here. So we're a division of the american chemical society being specialize in designing scientific information solutions that help organizations essentially be more efficient by leveraging the work and learnings of other scientists in our recent focus has gone beyond just our products like science finder which mary mentioned before Providing customized services to drive things like enhanced scientific data management increased scientific workflow efficiency are probably most relevant to the discussion here enabling high-value high high-precision initiatives required customized data sets coupled with scientific expertise

How to Find the Right Guests For Live Streams with Marco Novo

"So we said you know hey. This episode is going to be about finding the right guest for livestreams. I know on episode fifteen. We talked about how to find guest. And here's the. It's not hard to find guests. Jim and i talk about this all the time. What's the key thing jim that we just have to have people do. What do they need to do. Ask exactly absolutely so ask. And chances are you will receive chances. You know maybe if you want a big guest you know maybe it may take a number of tries but don't be afraid to ask now in terms of finding the right guest market wise important to find the right guest for your show. Well i see. I i see three main reasons first of all. Well it's not. It's not my by order randomly. Once they they bring a new ideas new perspective new knowledge to your audience which is good also. Okay the other thing they bring you knowledge. It's also important to to you. Because i learned a lot. Some people say you have a kind of a master degree just because you bring so good guests and also it is very important to give you all used to talk about a authority transmission because if you have important people well-known people recognized people on your show. They will give you some of their authority also and eat good. I can add an extra advantage which is audience because of them will bring their audience to you. So it's good because you will get known by other people that usually couldn't see you so each it's also of course to to you. Yeah that that's really desert. Some great points and i think We don't always think about that fact right and we've talked about that in other episodes as well as you know if you've got a good guest and they bring their audience that's like the in a sense. The perfect storm because a lot of times. That's really how you're going to grow is by bringing other people in you know as opposed to just trying to grow it yourself Which really kind of leads to the next question Does it seem like they're times when the type of guest doesn't matter for me it all his matter. It's it's very important. It's very important. And i think by setting these a brace. It's it's kind of the answer you need to weed is important to search for our guest. Okay and i will add some points. That's the main important is is he or she an authority in his field. Because one thing is when you know a lot about a topic it's good to bring someone who but if you want to to get some authority from from your guests and audience. It's not enough that he knows or she knows a lot of the topic. It's also important that he or she is recognized as someone with authority old. Who he's he's bringing this or that they are good. Okay cates good okay. Because sometimes they are and you know by these days these Social media saying it's it's nobody knows you. You're nobody's kind of the thing that is important. It is also important. And i used to talk about these. See your way to success like crossing a river you know which you will find big rocks and not so big rocks as sometimes the the big rocks are a little bit away far from you but you have in the middle small rocks which are good guests debt. You can find that they are not the big rock. If you know what i mean but in the between you have people were not the top of the field but they are well known they are recognized and they can they can lead you to the next on the bigger one you know so. It's also important something. I i like to advise. People look for a guest which can connect you to another good guest or a bigger one. Because it's important. It's we should be intentional. You know we should be good girls girls and boys but we should also be intention and not. Just bring someone because by the sake of bringing someone you know because forty says you want to bring a seth yougov into your show. Look for people. Who already had seth gordon in their show so you can be connected to them and then one eight forty says if that people had a good time with you can lead you to seth gov.

Algorithm spots 'Covid cough' inaudible to humans

"Mit scientists have published a paper. In the i tripoli journal of engineering and medicine and biology describing an algorithm they developed the can identify whether you have covid nineteen by the sound of your cough. That's true if you're asymmetric. In other words if i mean a coffee is a symptom. But you don't have the classic symptoms of covid nineteen because a cough could be a symptom of anything. Covid changes the sound you produce. Even when you're a symptomatic intesting. The algorithm was ninety eight point five percent accuracy on patients with a positive covid nineteen tests. So they were able to use coughing to detect ninety eight point five percent of people who were definitely positive with covid nineteen and a one hundred percent accurate for those with no other symptoms. The algorithm was trained on a data set of seventy thousand audio samples with multiple coughs. Twenty five hundred of which were from confirmed covid nineteen cases. So that's how the algorithm was able to go. Okay that's somebody who doesn't have it that somebody who does and figure out the patterns that it would listen for the site just hope to get regulatory approval to use it as a way to take quick noninvasive daily screenings and for pool testing to quickly detect outbreaks in groups pulled. Meaning like a group of people a test. A bunch of people once cambridge university carnegie mellon university. Uk health startup called novo. Eric are all working on similar projects. So it's not just mit. But they're the most recent to publish a paper on it.

The Cheapskate is in the house with some killer deals

"Are you on the hunt for a deal? We've got rick brighter the chiefs get himself on to talk about how to get the most bang for your buck. I'm Richard Chang. And this is your daily charge. What me a rick and Dave Johnson who co hosting a new cheapskate. Podcast FOR US fellows. Welcome Hi Roger. Hey how's it going all right? Let's let's get right into it. Tell me about your new show. What can we expect from the new cheapskate? Podcast right well. First of all talk about the name. It has called. Believe it or not that skate show and You Know David I have actually known each other for a lot of years and we tend to disagree about pretty much everything so you can expect a lot of very amusing arguments on the show. Yeah Rick and I wouldn't disagree Mike if he was white out stuff more seriously. This is the time when saving money a super important and we WANNA do a show that about smart ways to save money with packages. Because you don't want to give up technology because you know dollars type thing. That's a fantastic point. I mean that's why I wanted to talk about today to get a little bit of a a preview. Tease his show I wanted to get some sense. Of what the general buying guidelines right now especially with the economy crashing. People losing their jobs folks just being forced to tighten their belts. What are some some good smart tips for getting the most out of the deal right now right so my first step is going to be the same one I always share pandemic or not and that is to always use a cashback service for anything that you are buying online? I've written about these before and I've talked about a lot about them before. But these services are can really save you a lot And I'm talking about rackets in which used to be known as e Bates There's one called top cashback. If you do a lot of shopping on your phone you'll want to check out one called. Dash and just like you use a cash back credit card for the things that you buy these services. Sorta helped you to double dip a bit and can save you an extra two percent. Four percent. Eight percents at varies from store to store. But you just kinda crazy if you if you don't use one there's there's almost no downside and it's just it's little bits of extra savings that add up over time as you shop online and so by the end of ninety days which is when the cashback payoff happens. You can find yourself staring at a nice little chunk extra cash for my part. I'm going to say something that a lot of people probably already find pretty obvious but always always always saying no to the warranty extended warranties almost never a good value except there's one big exception that I have found out the root trial and error over. The years matters is right now especially with the pandemic people are buying more and more home exercise equipment right if you can't go to the gym people aren't going out running as much. Exercise EQUIPMENT BREAKS DOWN. Right here early if you don't buy the extended warranty on that you can really really run into problems. Downstream and I think rick had the same experience I have where we have bought exercise equipment and three months six months nine months later. It's broken and you lose the whole value of it so I found that the extended warranty exercise equipment and actually really work so surprising to no. I mean these are great. Jobs are there. Are there any other kinds of things that we should avoid or things? We shouldn't be doing when looking for deals around the Internet right. So I'll jump in and say that if you're shopping for Amazon gear and by which I mean like actual stuff that's made by Amazon kindles and echoes and things like that. Never ever pay full price for that stuff because Amazon puts these things on sale all the time and I mean like every four to six weeks you know kind of sometimes for no reason. Sometimes it's because we're coming up on a big holiday like a father's day or anything like that so if you're in the market for you know let's just say let's say a new echo speaker. Whatever at UC selling at the regular Amazon price. Just wait a little while because I guarantee you it will be on sale at some point in the near future and likewise I would say that we always kind of get objective. I think about getting something Shiny brand-new in the box that no human being has ever looked at or before but don't discount refurbished year re. I are great because you can get a dramatic discounts on buying something that's referred and if it's factory refurbished often you get the full warranty. The manufacturer would have given you on a new item anyway. So there's no downside shore somebody else has lick it before. But that's been cleaned up and so you're basically getting a new unit in all but name. Dave I never want to buy anything from you ever just. Just that's why I I don't know what the products law these at these. Tips are Super Handy. I think they're they're pretty general. I'm just curious if there are anything. Anything are doing differently now in our current situation that you might not have done you know prior to this. Probably the lockdown Prior to this whole pandemic of are there things now that we should be more aware of? I mean obviously the big thing is we can no longer rely on overnight shipping or even to today shipping for a lot of things. So you do kind of need to plan your purchases a little bit more than you used to. You know. Obviously if you're shopping for a gift for somebody for example you can't just wait until the last minute and expected it's GonNa arrive in a day or two ninety to budget out a week and sometimes even work. Yeah and for my part. I'm finding that you kind of have to look around at plated other than just Amazon. I definitely fall into the trap of. I used to buy everything I owned from one place and that was Amazon and I like the one stop shopping but I think increasingly these days unique could be open to checking. That's by checking target checking you know Walmart and you know smaller retailers as well because there there are deals to be found and there's inventory to be found so that's that's a really good point we're heading into the Memorial Day weekend usually Memorial Day's great time for sales but we obviously cannot go outside to two stores physical stores to find these deals. What are some of the best online deals? You're seeing well. This is a really good time of year or things that are like furniture bedding mattress related and in fact right now. I have a story up on. Cnn that's that's Memorial Day deal so you might wanNA check that out. I'm finding there are so many deals on things like mattresses and bedding that I can't fit them all story so there's hundreds of dollars off on any of that if you've made up your bed or you want a new piece of modular furniture for the living room. Definitely check that stuff out but there are tech fields to for example. The Novo has a of laptops on special right now and there's a lot of kitchen voice. I Love Kitchen Joyce You know whether the air fryers or ice cream makers or you you name it. And there's a lot of that stuff on specialists. Well all that said this is probably not a great time of year for things like game console. So I'm not seeing any deals on xboxes or playstations that might happen but keep in mind. We're in the run up in later this year. We're GONNA see the new consoles coming out and if you WANNA get VR headset. This is probably a terrible time because the oculus quest which is via hottest headset on the market has been out of stock for months. And it's just coming back in but getting one is really just a crap shoot. Actually let me just jump in here and point out how incredibly wrong Dave is because there is one console deal. That's happening right now. That is fantastic. And IT'S THE SEGA GENESIS. Many which is one of those Self-contained all in one retro throwback console things. It's normally eight bucks but it's on sale right now at Amazon and best buy game. Stop for fifty bucks. So that's kind of a great like father's Day gift item if you're looking for something like that and I just wrote about this on the cheapskate. Belonged this morning so you can find that at CNN dot com slash cheapskate. If you WANNA check out that deal nice says as serious or a big Fan. I loved Genesis. I loved all things. Hedgehog I'll have to check that out now the real reason I have you guys on. It's not not because I want to show it's really because I'm purely selfish and been task to look for new laptop. My Wife She's not a Gamer though. I would like a PC that could run steam for again my selfish reasons but where would you recommend I look? Are there any good laptop deals for this weekend? Actually really are. I think I mentioned earlier when we were talking about the Memorial Day sale. The Novo was having deals right now. You can get like a c nine forty for five hundred dollars off. It's under a grand right now and If you WANNA go with like a thinkpad x one the the Yoga you can save a grand on that. It's only like twelve hundred dollars so again. Check out the Latino. Vote deals Article on Fi net. Because we've got a bunch of them there and I would say that is where I would put my dime right now on Memorial Day. Yeah Roger just want to add you probably know this already but for people who are listening and our maybe also shopping for a gaming friendly laptop it is super super important that you choose a machine that has a solid state drive Am even if it means getting a smaller drive for performance sake. It is going to blow a traditional hard drive out of the water and you could always add more stories later if you need to but it is really worth spending a little extra up front to get a system has a solid state drives instead of just a big old high capacity regular grass. Yeah that's that's a really good point but notre increasingly rare it actually getting harder and harder to find the laptop that has an old fashioned thinning drive in it so I kind of consider that table stakes. Absolutely get enough gate. Okay that's a

A Roadtrip Through Bulgaria

"Let's talk about a road trip through Bulgaria. I'd like to welcome to the show. Tom and Patty Burkett. Who are coming to us from Ohio but come to talk to us about Bulgaria? Tom Common Patty welcome to the show. Thank you hi there. And what is your connection Bulgaria. Well I have a cousin who's in the. US Foreign Service listen. He's posted in Bulgaria currently and is married to a Bulgarian woman and we decided to celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary that we would like to do a trip that that was a bit more exotic than we usually do and that since we had a connection there in Bulgaria and had heard on your show that Bulgaria it is a country that is more like your might have been several decades ago that it would be an interesting place to visit and we discovered that that was absolutely true. And I think that feeds into my next question which is why should someone go to Bulgaria. Well interestingly we got that question lot from all of our friends and family I have. I'm not surprised and actually also from many Bulgarians who said why. Why did you come here? I think one of the really exciting exciting things about Bulgaria. It's on the crossroads of history. The Turkish empire the Roman Empire Communism. And so it's an absolutely fascinating location. You're interested in the development of culture. I'd add two things to that. I that we started out the trip by spending a couple of three days in Munich and Budapest and Vienna and we were amazed at the difference in tourist fatigue between those cities and our visit in Bulgaria and Bulgaria. We were the interesting interesting thing that was happening to them. Rather than the other way around some people in small towns would go out of their way to call somebody up and say. Hey they're Americans here. Come look at. Oh that's hilarious. Excellent well kind of I recommend for us. We spent more than three weeks driving around the country and we prefer to avoid for the most part areas that are highly touristed and we recommend starting in Velika turnover which is the old capital of Bulgaria and driving through the country to the Black Sea coast and spending a bit of time. There are and then driving on mush more southerly route and ending up in Plovdiv and taking some day trips from Bo Velika Tore Novo and plugged it. Okay excellent well. Let's start that immortal. You started in. You flew into Sophia and we did about. He has a good story about arriving there. And and the surly alphabet renew knew ahead of time that we might not find people who could speak English. So you're prepared for that and we knew of course that the CYRILLIC alphabet was different and we had done a little. Oh studying before we went pretty hard to get it in your brain so we got there pretty fatigued after flying. Think we had to take two flights to get there anyways as we got in. We had to rent a car. We're getting to our AIRBNB about dusk. And all of a sudden it hit us as we were trying to park our car and we could not read anything on any street signs except every one of them had a tow truck on the bottom so we finally sort award of figured out that thinks said things like well nineteen hundred eight. Am sounds like maybe you can park your overnight and so we punt with some of that and that we did have to say had a moment where we between our fatigue and trying to park this car in the country we were really unfamiliar with. We looked at each other and wondered if we'd bitten off more than we could chew but we actually ended up within an hour of that finding a friendly face at a restaurant and spoken Galician relation. Who helped clarify that? We had actually interpreted the sign correctly and we found US bought park. It was good to park at until later. Eight thirty the following following morning and the following morning we got down about fifteen minutes before the deadline expired to discover that someone had parked behind us and the car even in such a way that we couldn't possibly get it out so we're standing there wondering exactly what we should do about that in a woman got out of a nearby. You're by car that she was parking and pointed at the sign. As if to say you shouldn't park here after eight thirty and we were thinking that boy we would like to be able to get out of there if we could. Fortunately maybe someone was looking from a nearby window and who was not partisan and came back and moved it so he could get out. Welcome to Bulgaria exactly and this was in Sophea and we drove out so-fi later that day and we're not sad to see it in the Rear Review Mirror for at least a few days. Excellent will you start at us then in Velika turnover yes Adele. Novo is the first capital a Bulgarian. And it's a beautiful city. And there's a large fortress there that sits up on a hill and it has a sound and light light show that operates most nights of the year. I occasionally. It's not working but there's music and narration and the city is situated on several hill. Also we were on a hill that faced the castle so from the balcony of our apartment. We were able to watch the light show at night. We couldn't hear the narration but we could the music and we could watch the lights. Change of the fortress walls light up and the castle keep light up and it was very matic and an interesting to seem all in Bulgarian. Rian internal Danny's okay set off by the moon and the stars. It was romantic and fascinating and we were able to stay in a an apartment apartment. That was just along the craftsperson street there in Velika Tore Novo shops. The ones that weren't restaurants or little grocery stores were operated by artisans who were wood carvers and icon painters and potters and they all were all there practicing their craft. We could walk down the street read and visit with them and see the things that they were working on. It was really delightful. The street was over Hong with umbrellas so at night they had those lint it and it was very romantic as well. I'M GONNA guess you're talking about the some of SCA car Shia the Complex well in Velika turnover. I would say that was that was an ideal location. Because it's a very hilly city so you're able to do a lot of up and down hill walking. That was the place for her to be at your central location because we can walk to those vendors and then there are other places in the city we could drive to but we felt that that was a great location to be centered in. And were you finding out through Airbnb or through some local site. Or how does your apartment on AIRBNB. Yep We did use AIRBNB and we did USA local connections for some of the lodgings we stayed and when we were there as well but not that one that was airbnb like we found the AIRBNB. Were we had good luck with them. The the quality of them were described accurately. It was a little bit more rustic of somebody's a high end traveler. These were not that okay. It was what we were looking for. We were in somebody's home. We had our own area of the home with their own patio but was not a luxury but it put us right where we wanted to be

CNET's tech-deals guru reveals his secrets (The Daily Charge, 9/3/2019)

"Today on the daily charge i instagram now facebook may start hiding likes wifi seven already on the developing table and dove tailing off the best labor day tech deals the cheapskate rick reuter is here to break down what still good morning and welcome to seen daily really tired. It's tuesday september third. I'm joanie saltzman alfred. Let's get to the headlines here in the u._s. Were coming back from a labor day holiday holiday weekend which like most holidays here means shopping but there are still deals out there for you to grab rick bre has been spearheading cenex coverage of tech deals for years and he's he's joining us now remotely wreck. Thanks for coming on the show. Thanks for having me guys. So what are some of the best deals still out there for people right now right so as you mentioned the labor day holiday was a great excuse for everybody to have deals because it's american but we do and although a lot of the deals are wrapping up because it's the day after labor day there are few that are still holding on <hes> for example h having a really nice salem one of their <hes> more entry level the laptops. It's like a fifteen inch but actually has a decent processor and it has a two hundred fifty six gigabyte solid state drive and it starts at just like five hundred nineteen bucks ax which is a really good price for that. I recommend anybody who's getting that. Go into the custom convict tool and bump up the screen resolution two full h._d. That's an extra fifty bucks six the <hes>. I have it right here in front of me. I don't forget another novo. Start clock is down to sixty bucks and this is a really nice item for a college student or anybody. He also wants to be able to wake up with with videos or see a live weather reports stuff like that <hes> the air pods deal with the wireless charging case that was was like one of the all time best deals on that is now expired but you know <hes> black friday is coming so deals like that. We'll be back right. Well something. I've always wanted to ask you and so. I'm glad i got to do this. Live in front of an audience is how do you keep on top of identifying these deals all year round. I can't even imagine and like what you cannot ask magician to reveal. I don't care if we're live. We're not no seriously though i i have a number of different ways that i track these deals. A lot of times vendors will reach out to me and say hey we wanna do an exclusive thing for for cheapskate reader's go out different deals sites <hes> like anybody and then of course i have my spies here and there who bring me the good stuff <hes> the one thing i'll mention though is that for anybody who wants to on attract deals on their own if they're hoping to score a deal on something and they wanna find out when it goes on sale. There's a couple of tools that they can use the help them do this. One is it's called camel camel camel and the other is called honey and both of these let you set up water called <hes> basically price alerts so you let them you specify what price ice what threshold you're hoping to get and it will send you an email alert as soon as that particular product gets to that price. That's a great way to keep tabs on individual joel products that you're hoping to score a deal on that's great so we're gonna talk to some more and left. If you guys have any questions for him stick around he'll be there to answer your questions but next up facebook maybe the world's most powerful force addicting us to gobbling up those likes on our posts making them go higher and higher but it's considering hiding like counts. The company already tested a similar move on instagram in august so this is all part of digital health right this idea that it's not healthy for for us to be constantly trolling and feeding these you know this need for likes but facebook is the one that kind of pioneer across the globe yeah they on often cite and when we talk about dark patterns which are ways that you know pages are designed to make you keep coming back to the reason why the notification is an annoying red teijin not a color that that doesn't bother you when it's just lingering on your page so much <hes> you know their studies on people getting kind of like a dopamine rush whenever they do get like like a like or a re tweet or share on their post or something like that and you know a lot of people who have noted that this is a step in the right direction to kind of hide that so you're not like constantly reminded click on the app and keep looking back at it right yeah and also not only just engagement also it feeds into like self worth and self appreciation when you see somebody else's post gang or even just friend counts which they're not talking about. You're talking about a test for counts. Those sort of numbers have led to people self assessing their own self. Yeah i remember i would delete photos if i didn't get more than ten minutes on instagram while so i kinda shifted myself out of that and and i made like another instagram page has no followers and i don't follow anybody on post stuff on it or anything like that but it's very liberating like the break myself out of that chain yeah the next just be not uploading photos come on myspace. He can't do that exactly and finally finally wi fi. Six is just now arriving phones laptops in network equipment but engineers already moving on to wi fi seven. It's the next standard that it promises viewers better streaming video longer range and fewer problems with traffic congestion. Basically the idea is that it would deliver a wired connection over wireless. The guy that are are stephen shanklin. He interviewed um qualcomm <unk> vice president technology he said like blanket your house and every nook and cranny with us like hyper speed internet connectivity. What do you think about this. Do you know why why six is afraid of wifi seven. Why because it's faster is probably going to be the new standard tendered and like wipe out wi fi six more adopted but yeah i mean it's a very strong promise to say. That'll be exactly as fast. This is a wired connection. Just <hes> from a place online games a lot usually when there's lag people say you should be using a wired connection. What are you doing so hopefully that upends is that and it does bring a lot of new possibilities for streaming potential netflix constantly talks about how they wanna like more four k content and eight k is like starting to become a thing now and i keep looking at it. It's like who has the bandwidth to download all that like boy yeah with wi fi seven. I mean that definitely does bring that possibility right well wifi seven though we'll be waiting a while. It's not supposed to be arriving until twenty twenty four so we've got some time to prepare yeah assuming that an internet will still be there. It will be for the daily charge. I'm joanie saltzman. I'm offering. Thanks for joining us.

Europe's Balkan dilemma

Europe's Balkan dilemma

"Today, we're looking at the Balkans, an area that dominated international attention twenty years ago after the wars in Bosnia and Kossovo. But it slipped from the headlines in recent years. Joining me to discuss the region, and at some certain prospects are the T euro penatta, Ben home, an Fokin correspondent, Valerie Hopkins. Ben the F T this morning described the Balkans as the most volatile region in Europe. Why would he say that? Because historically, it has been a region that has been full tired of by competing power blocks. You know, the ultimate empire the Austro-Hungarian empire the Russian empire and that has left kind of overlapping, national, and ethnic and religious divisions. And we are still living with the legacy of that, and sort of overlaid by an incomplete transition to democracy and the rule of law after communism and. Then probably on top of all of that you have corruption. It's deeply rooted. So Ben before we continue. Let's just define the region. How big is it? And how significant so we're talking about the western Balkans region roughly twenty million people about the population of the Netherlands, but with a really tiny economy, about the size of Slovakia's. And we're talking about Serbia Montenegro Bosnia Herzegovina Albania, north Macedonia, and Kosovo, of course. So it's a pretty small number of people with a pretty small combined GDP. It's not significant, but it's always been a source of instability as we've known for the last century. Valerie, Ben referred to this as a kind of incomplete process and some of the countries in the regions, maybe all of them have hurt. The delta Modeste nation will be joining the EU I'm thinking, particularly of north Macedonian Albanian, but they're finding very hard. Yes. Well, that's true. They've been hoping to join but also the e u has been hoping for them to join I mean for the first time this was articulated in two thousand three in there. I e you some. In Thessaloniki, all of the countries of the western Balkans were promised a credible path to accession we're given unequivocal support from the Member States and one year ago after north miss Adonia and underwent quite comprehensive changes north Macedonia, to its name, and two other reforms and L Bainian committing to a very onerous judicial reform were promised that they would get a green light this year. And as we saw yesterday that decision was punted again, for a couple of months, at least until October and from their point of view, how much of a disastrous. Well, it's quite a big disaster. I mean, enormous Adonia which recently changed its name in order to end a decades long conflict with Greece over their name, which Athens believed implied territorial desire over the Greek region of the same name, the whole public support for the agreement and public support for the government is riding on the guarantees towards progress towards the EU that are written into that. So north Macedonia, has moved forward in terms of its NATO membership. Several countries, I think, have already ratified the NATO accession protocol for them. But, you know, the European Union membership is what the public really wants and at a certain point, it may become untenable for the leaders of the country to stay in power if they can't deliver on what was promised them, and that would be a disaster for them. And for Europe. Yeah. Mean Ben you've been pretty critical of the youth decision. What's the argument for saying the eaves being sources that it had a unique? Novo paternity to put these two countries move firmly on the path of judgement. EU rules values and sort of binding them into the EU orbit, we have to remember that sort of enlargement process. If you just put aside the various problems that we've experienced over the is in the grand sweep of history. It's been a remarkable success for the EU it stabilized the region, it's brought prosperity and it's dissolved the division between eastern western Europe and the argument just to recap for those who don't totally recall took the EU from what fifteen countries to now. Twenty eight to twenty eight. Yeah. And so, in argument is probably the most effective European Union foreign policy, and it has helped put countries on the right path, and stabilize democracy and promote reform and promote the rule of law. But perhaps there are now plenty of people in the EU think we've reached the end of that process and the legacy problems from previous enlargements have come back to haunt the EU. Maybe the enlargement the accession process was not rigorous. Enough. And so now there are plenty of people who are having second thoughts about it. Yeah. And I mean just to play devil's advocate, I suppose if you are European politician, you will say, well, sure the future of these countries matters, but as he was saying Elliott's twenty million people in the, you have the rise of populists across Europe and places like France, the Netherlands, Britain's voted for Brexit. And it doesn't appear that accession to countries like, oh, near is popular. So perhaps that wise, not to do it quite possibly. But I mean, I think the calculation has to be how long can you keep these countries on the path to accession without ever actually giving them accession at the end of the day? And that solvency something that the EU has tried with Turkey and it's backfired arguably spectacularly, although you could also blame premise, Erta one, perhaps originally topper one for the kind of backsliding in democracy, and the sort of drift away from the European mainstream, in Turkey, but I mean that is clearly the calculation it would be good for Europe if. If Albany could be put on the path to membership even if it never actually meets the criteria to join fully, and you mentioned Obama. Valerie back from there. Give us a description of where the country is in terms of its economy, and its politics because when I was growing up out, mania was like the most isolated place. It was North Korea Europe. And the idea that it might even be close to joining the paean union in some ways, seems miraculous. Well, indeed, it is. And it's quite far off. But I think, you know, to build on what Ben said many Member States have grown tired of the process and have learned that they need to impose further and further restrictions. We see that many of the countries that have joined in recent decades still have problems with their judicial systems. So we're talking countries like Romania Bulgaria, yes, Hungary. If I may say, so the conditions and the demands that Brussels and the Member States have made on countries, which are hoping to join have actually become much more onerous Albania, my story that I did while I was in Toronto was about the extremely onerous. Writing process that all judges, and prosecutors are being subjected to which has left. The country's supreme court with only two judges. One of them I think is being vetted this week. So it may have only one judge so far, only one judge survived because the two tional court, I believe, has only one judge, which is actually quite stabilizing, on the political. See now as the parliament has moved to impeach the president for calling early elections. And no one in the court can judge on this. I don't wanna get too deep into their politics. But I would like to say to that Albanian has also accepted to host the first FrontEx mission FrontEx being the US Border police agency because during the two thousand fifteen migrant crisis, the EU sort of realized woke up and remembered that actually all of these countries in the Balkan route are inside of Europe that if you have weak states week, police weakens to, to Sion's at that will have consequences for the security and safety of the rest of the block. So there should be more interest in improving those institutions and the best way to do it all. Of the academic work that's been done in the Balkans shows that the carrot of enlargement, and of a real credible accession path is the best way to inspire reforms, but how is the economy doing? And how connected is opening to the rest of Europe, now compared to those days of isolation. I mean silly, anecdote but, you know, I come across our Bainian in London now buildings around the corner. So to some extent, they seem to have been integrated little bit. Well, absolutely. I mean, quite a significant portion of Albanians left the country in the nineties jobs, better opportunities. And I think it's rare to meet now lenient who doesn't speak at least two or three languages. But now, people are coming back business ties between mania and especially Italy, Switzerland UK are very strong and the economy's growing, I think actually in the Balkans. The economies are growing much faster than the EU average about four five percent. They still have a long way to go to catch up, but there's quite a lot of vitality and what about this issue of organized crime, which is thrown at all the countries in the Balkans. But I think particularly. Albania for those sitting in Brussels or elsewhere, saying, do we really want country in that condition inside the EU, how serious is the problem? Well, it is a serious problem. And it you know, it also goes to show that again you can't separate the Balkans. Even with the Albania or north as Donio, anyone not being inside of the EU criminals will always find a way to engage in their activity. It seems to me in some of my discussions with police dodges prosecutors that sometimes this threat is overblown. For instance, the Dutch parliament, several weeks ago passed a Bill asking their government to withdraw visa-free travel for all Baynes, dude organised crime. And then when you go and inject a Dutch officials, they say actually, this is not necessarily for violent crime. A lot of people are trying to get on both. Maybe they're trying to come to the UK but actually they're not necessarily being arrested for trafficking in drugs, or persons Ben turning to the other country. We were talking about north Macedonia that I suppose, makes the point that this is also still an issue. To some extent, war and peace. I mean they had extremely tense relations with Greece for sometime. Yes. They have done over the dispute over the name after the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. And that, of course, has prevented Macedonia, north Macedonia is now 'cause integration into the Atlantic community, the NATO. So I mean, it really was a huge that Ford when Zorn's Iovan Alexis, it press the Greek premier achieve this deal, and it still highly contentious in Greece. And we have a general election next month in Greece, where you are likely to see the return of a center, right? New democracy led government and new democracy has been very, very critical of the naming deal with north Macedonia. It remains to be seen whether they will actually go as far as to block their entry, but I suspect Athens will be a lot less accommodating in the future than it has been over the last couple of years. And if I recall correctly at the time, there was some evidence, which the Cyprus government acted on the Russian espionage Intel. Emergence agencies trying to stoke up opposition to the north Macedonia settlement does that raise. Also, I suppose a subsidiary issue, but crucial one which affects Europe's judgment, which is that to the extent that this area is not integrated with the rest of the EU becomes the sort of floating space. And there is no evidence that not just the Russians but also the Turks and even the Chinese are taking an interest in the western Balkans. Absolutely. I suspect it's possible to maybe overplay, the extent of Russian influence, although it has been substantial an acute in some places such as the authentic your and Montenegro and this attempt to stoke up resistance to the referendum on the name changed Illinois with Macedonia, which the Greeks are pro Russian country, actually expelled him Russian diplomats accusing the spine. The Turks are obviously increasingly involved in Bosnia to governor, and Albanian in Kosova, and the. Please spot an opportunity to extend their influence through commerce and through infrastructure spending. So, yeah, we're replaying centuries of history where this region has been kind of plaything for the great powers. And of course, I suppose it's easier for Europe to ignore to the extent that these above Ling cute problems, but lots of problems as long as it doesn't actually break out into violence. Now I mentioned at the beginning of the program that the broad or can region. We were at war twenty years ago is there danger of the old conference coming bubbling back. Or is it more that we're talking about serious, but subsidiary issues of people flows economic crises organized crime, and so on, is there danger of real all while I think you'd be foolish to rule out the danger of a return to conflict in this area in the sense that forty years ago, you might have done the same thing but history has shown how quickly this place can erupt into. James, and I suspect that remains although I'm sure it has reduced in the last ten twenty years, and there is more at stake for the region's inhabitants. If they have a clear path to e membership, which will bring guarantees of security, and better economic prospects. And the end of the day, I have the firm feeling that it's often corrupt politicians who have their own economic interests at heart, who are perpetuating the kind of ethnic divisions in this region. More than popular convictions. And Valerie euro correspondent on the ground. So how stable or unstable does it seem to you? Well, I do agree with Ben that seemingly innocuous crisis can escalate. And I think that in most of the countries, you really do have this kind of boiling, the frog situation where I is correspondent struggle with sometimes seemingly small jumps in a story, actually could carry larger consequences later. But I think rather than conflict, the major risk is just that the country will empty out with people losing hope. That they will be able to create a better life for their children and grandchildren. For instance, in Bosnia, which is a population of three and a half million in the last three or four years. I think two hundred thousand people left since January some thirty thousand people have already left the country. And that's when I talked to people, it's really a matter of losing hope that they will join the European Union and have a better life. So these countries will suffer catastrophic demographic decline. And western Europe will find if they didn't integrate them, they'll show up on the doorsteps. Well, many of them, actually are getting jobs in western Europe, which are empty, you know, these are educated workers doctors dentists health worker, social workers, so it's not the same as migrant crisis. Most of them are going legally with work permits, but they're leaving their home countries for good. Okay. We'll, we'll have to leave it. Thank you very much indeed, to buttery Hopkins in the studio and to Ben holes. Well that's it for this week until next week. Goodbye.

"We're talking about an alarm clock a bedside alarm clock. That's what we usually show, the, the weekly alarm clock update. Well, actually, it's worth a quick mentioned, this came out back in January, and we are now in June, and it's finally on sale the Novo smart clock, and I'm happy to hear that when people finally got their hands on and actually used it for a while as an alarm clock. It's not really something you could demo very well you know, you just gotta use it in your life that it's actually good. And Dana Bater has one right before he left for vacation fill modern dad has one and Michael Mr. mobile has one as well. And they all just generally think it's a good deal for eighty bucks as a like a Google home device. Exactly. I'm a little jealous Oldham. So I saw it in Vegas. See, yes. For the first time, and I was actually. Moderately excited about something unexpected having come come from using the Lenovo smart, display having something that is smaller has a love the same functionality. But his small of opposable more than impulse buy, I think it was it would be something with a big appeal in sunny. What's everyone reviewing it seems to be site in for me. I don't know if you have much smart home stuff, but I don't really have any smart things on the outside of a couple. This couple things in Google home. Speakers all that this feels like a good by eighty dollars compared to the former home hub now Ness, tub that has this focus on the bigger screen, and, you know, being able to control your smart home things if you don't care about that, and you so you don't want or need the bigger display if for eighty dollars, it kind of makes sense to get this thing. Sure, like the screen is in great. And it's kind of small four inches diagonally but for the. Same prices Google home. You can easily see this being a better purchase for, I would say the, the bedroom or the bathroom as just something to give you little bits of Ambien information. Like you're not gonna sit there and poke around on it. But also you can easily see this going on sale for like fifty dollars a month Llanelli. I would be amazed if it was done a fifty bucks by by the holiday sales. Yeah. Absolutely. And that's one thing that Mr. mobile pointed out, in his great video review, was he would love to receive this as a gift, maybe not go out of his way to go by. And it is it is a highly giftable Isobel agree that in, in a way. That's I think perhaps the small displays what is a little bit out of that sort of price range for a lot of people at, like one hundred eighty bucks or hundred ninety even even the big one, I think of hit. Yeah. That didn't make a whole lot of sense. But for eighty dollars like this would be a nice, standalone thing to give somebody instead of a Google, mini as a first home device, because it's just there's something about having the screen there that feels more like easier to get into and easier to start your interaction with Google assistant rather than this, just like hockey. Puck thing covered in fabrics. I think the presence of the screen makes it more pro-chavez. Also, the small fact of this footprint competitive. He's largest multiplies also makes it more than approachable thing, it's this giant monolith, that's going to dominate one of his you put it on. It is designed to be small is designed to have a screen gets five right dog at night, stubby. It's much less of a intrusive piece of technology field uncle that than than anything comparable. I think you know what is going to be a massively, intrusive, piece of technology like the segway. The galaxy note ten because it is going to be massive, and it may have or not have various things that are already making people mad, even though it's not coming out probably until October. So all right. Alex, give us the rundown, just look at this render that is supposedly the full roughly final design and just tell me that it doesn't look like a Sony phone. It does. I'll agree with you. That it does look a little bit like Sony phone. A little bit of caveat because we always generally the white works before we start to see properly is on the money factor. We'll see these sort of cat renders that cold based on the specs leaked information, the case manufacturers, and the people gets only one of the guys who likes to police together. He's done a good job, sort of approximating the note tenjin look like but still it's not gonna be a one hundred percent. Accurate, pixel perfect represent fools representation of jam. Some gray areas based on dimensions where you have to guess. Yes, those a little bit of guesswork involved. But this does look like a big slab of a phone UN's in already this year where we have the galaxy S ten five G, which is another big slug of on this looks more Angula mass, the comparison with Sony funds comes in, because only of pulses going northwards cook screens now is moving a little bit away from just having a big Cubo, like they've had for the past is, they're dumping Samsung design language. So the same time you have so this convergence that I mean look, the note is always been more boxy, mo- squad. All this big sort of slab of technology. A note you'll every day of every man phone I'm curious to see what direction they go with it. I think the headphone Jack thing supposedly this thing she is shipping without headphone, Jack probably inevitable of this points. That's just the the way transit going end, especially in seeking a. Yeah. I think probably the finals of stroll for them was something get rid of the SPN ESPN takes a ton of space inside the notes. And you have every the phone that is competing with the note doesn't have to this, this thing, take him space inside, the could otherwise goes was battery all space for five G antennas will stuff like that. So I think that's probably finally put pay to headphone Jackson. Samsung phones, the, the other thing which is maybe a little bit more grievous is, we have a very unusual approach to a whole punch display in the form of this big cyclops I right in the center of it. Yeah. In what's weird about it as well. Is that the they just came out with this side, whole punch, or corner whole punch for the galaxy S ten series? And then they're going to switch to this. I don't quite understand that even as much as I agree that. You know the center is from like a user experience standpoint. The center is better. It's for selfish and things that makes more sense to have central from the interface perspective. It makes more sense to have it in this kind of dead zone in the dead middle. But the, the other weird thing to me is that there's only one camera here. So they're just apparently gonna ditch the double camera that you see on the galaxy S ten plus that, that also seems kinda weird to me. Yeah, it does a little bit. I mean, we'll, we'll have to see what the justifications all putting the camera days, I'm sure it has to do with the Lao components, whatever just freeing up as much space as you can for a scream. The ten five g you have not only two three cameras of that looks kind of people wait, when you picked it up for the first time, I think, you know, it's a little bit futile. The second guess everything they can be doing. I imagine they probably don't need the time of flight sense of poultry. He's let's be honest that wasn't a whole son was doing without second camera, anyway, on the very true. Yes. Yeah. So maybe it's just a case of what can we get rid of before, eventually gets these on the display senses. So a little bit of that from Chinese manufacturers this year of this past week, so, right? Yeah. Who knows why it is the way it is. It is a bit of a perplexing decision to put in the middle because around the time to know was coming out with on a view twenty late last year. They did a lot of market research that using LCD. So the technology's been different, but they did a lot of market research about why was the least intrusive place to put this whole punch. The decided it was in the place where if you holding inland, scapegoating gaming, you'll thumb Germany's gonna cover anyway, something side, one of the other options. They were looking at wells, a central hole punch, and they decided that was actually the worst of all of them market research. So I'm not sure the Samsung scientist has a much more smaller hole punch zombies less noticeable all going with some, some other reason that we caught full, see the, the we'll have to wait and see. Maybe in the next couple of months. So the rest of the phone, it looks like it's the typical, you know, Bengals get smaller, especially that bottom vessel. You mentioned it being kind of boxy. It looks flatter on the top and bottom, again, just trying to fit as much screen as possible. I think we're talking about a six point seven five inch screen at the at the highest end and there's also this disconnected. We're not entirely sure where the lines are being drawn between the potential of note ten and a note, ten pro version and within those probably at least one fi separate five G versions, there's going to be like, maybe a six point three inch screen and then upwards of six point eight inch screen which would probably be the pro version. What do you, do you have any idea what we could expect for a pro version when the note is already kind of the pro version of the whatever the galaxy S was earlier in the year. Some my theory is it might have to do with while a couple of things mostly cost. Right. I mean those already expensive. But when adding a whole bunch of extra features like whether it's more cameras, you know, you can always get more will mileage out of out of small camera. Winnie give more vocal focal length options, all, whether it's just a case of you using soon components in the pro the you know, you could be able to source as many of the mainstream version. So, you know, yields higher whatever I can't tell you while space age feature that might be enabling, you know, maybe it's bettering scream fingerprints, maybe it is just more cameras. Maybe is a bigger battery. Maybe they just wanna go. Maybe they again maybe they do their market research. They figured out the old no buys don't necessarily won't that extracts for big phone. And maybe they figured that's in a year that we have five galaxy S ten phones, anyway, that maybe been variety in terms of the note line isn't such a bad thing. Yeah. I mean, it kind of just let them make the SPN be the one differentiator of the note line, especially. When they already said they already segmented out the ten plus so much. And this is kind of in the problem that they faced I would say since the note five where the note line s liner so darn close together, especially when they started making the plus sized galaxy S's so, so similar in size and capable that. You know what can you do? You can't just keep going larger maybe you add, you know, I don't know. Maybe they add some kind of interesting camera features something. But it really seems like they're kind of standardizing on the core platform and man, it's really gonna throw people off if you know, all you gets as they as they like to say is the Aspen, and then you're going to be losing a headphone Jack for it. I feel like they're going to have to have something there. Yeah. One of the rooms going around from ice, universities. Chinese leaker is that we're gonna have not only forty five hundred million. Patchy, which is the room expect that, but also forty five watt. Charging I is faster than the current maximum of the Walworth, supercharging believe it's like tied more or less with while the mates X is supposed to be promising so super super charging, which you needed the big battery Tim's the placement of the note, I would look at the track record of the past year. This is marketplace. Tech demystifying the digital economy, I'm Ali would. We're all being hit constantly with spam, callers online, phishing attacks scams and other fraud attempts. But there's medical evidence that otherwise healthy older, people might become more vulnerable to these attacks. My colleague David Brancaccio, host of the marketplace morning report has been reporting on how our defenses get weaker as our brains age. He said some researchers are figuring out how technology is used to scam people, and how that same tech could be used to protect them and just spoke with a researcher at the university of Florida Natalie eb ner from the department of psychology there. She and her collaborator, Daniele Oliveira, a computer engineering. Professor wanna know who is especially susceptible to scams, and who is not they sign up older. People I study put in a special browser on their stuff and then sneaky, researchers they creep in fake phishing emails to their tests subjects and the track who falls for the fake scams. Here's Dr EDNA. And almost majority of our sample forty three percent fail for those phishing emails, this included young and older diets, but it was, especially the older women who showed a particular vulnerability to those phishing emails, and most importantly, what we thought was that there was very little awareness of the risks that's terrifying. So they turned out to be vulnerable, but did not think that they were vulnerable and then tell me more about this forty-three percent. The people who fell for this, the most is the key. Right. Who might be extra susceptible so that we can help them protect themselves. It's not really their general health. It's not just the older. You get one interesting finding here older people with what researchers called negative affect where extra susceptible to online scam. So what's that mean? Well, they tested to see if people were having a bad day. Those are the people who seem to be prone to falling victim to these online scams. The people saying, oh, what a beautiful morning were more immune to tell. Me more about Dr Abner is research.
