"Louis got their flowers Cincinnati probably sitting around here and what 40 minutes in saying, where's ours? Dave? One nothing win. Sounders? Some interesting refereeing moments in this one. I'll direct you to instant replay. We won't devote airtime to those unless for whatever reason you feel passionate about them. A little bit of a little choppy. We'll choppy, but two quality teams, what'd you take away from Cincinnati's win? So I think you go from the start to dominate possession, which is not really how they comfortably play and look great at home, but not create the chances and then you get the goal in a pressing moment and then you're able to continue to be a dangerous over the course of the game, but for this team, there are Achilles heel last year was hanging on to leads. And being able to play a full 90 minutes at a high level and not open up the door by trying to push for the next chance. And we saw them drop a ton of points from winning positions last year and they got better, of course, the playoff game to be able to win laid on. This felt like a really big moment against a good opponent coming in, undefeated, and you're able to get ahead, lucho coast, I thought, looked really good in this game, writing tackles being physical, being someone you could play through in tough moments. Brenner's a guy that there was unsure. How's he going to come back? Didn't get to Nottingham Forest wasn't here in pre season. Down in Brazil, what's his mentality? How connected is he? He gets a goal. He had a couple really good looks as well. Brandon Vasquez looked fairly comfortable again being that guy who can be a finisher but it's also happy to be a facilitator for Brenner and lucho as well. Like a 60 yard pass on a dime at one point to lucho Acosta, which was obscene. There was a lot to like in this game and you don't have Santi Arias. You get the red card against you.

Richarlison reacts to criticism by helping Spurs beat Forest

"Tottenham has a firmer grip on the final Champions League spot following a three one win against Nottingham Forest. Harry Kane supplied a pair of first half goals to help spurs move 6 points ahead of 5th place Liverpool, which was a one zero loser to Bournemouth. Sudden hewn men added the second half goal. Richardson had a hand in Kane's second goal. One day after manager Antonio Conte described him as selfish for complaining about playing time. Kane scored in the 19th minute, then converted a penalty in the 35th after Richardson was fouled. I'm Dave ferry.

Bernardo Silva put city ahead in the 41st minute and it remained one zero until Chris Wood scored his first goal for forest in the 84th. In between league goal leader erling Holland missed two excellent chances to widen cities lead. City attempted 23 shots to four for Nottingham Forest, putting 6 on target. "For sprues, the chambers league is not something you would have been prepared for, but just coming in and doing a job, I think for you to force that is more than capable of. As a number two, the mindset is, you aren't going to win spurs any games, but don't lose them in. And I think as long as you do that, freeze the force. It's a bit like it's about glass, I feel again, come on. Let's go to jolly joules. Yeah, terrible day, really terrible day for the world of football, really. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. No, it's sad that Hugo is hoping that he can come back after 6 weeks, maybe more than 8. But yeah, so it's the worst time of the season when they have so many games, the Champions League obviously, including bells with the Africa and the league where they are fighting for that top four finish. So it's the worst time possible. It's a shame because it's also the captain of that team. And I think that leadership is important in those key moments. So yeah, they will miss him for showing us. It's a bit like when it's a different scenario, but if you remember back when Kepler was the number one again. But when he was number one in mind he wasn't there and he was having his problems and wasn't playing well amongst other things and come in. Out of almost out of space, I think it was from Lampard wanted him out. And whilst he made some made the odd good save when he first came in, he just knew, you know, you just know there was a disaster waiting to happen really in the long term because as Shaq said, these guys are number two is the command for the odd 20 minutes or one game in the cup when I keep us getting arrested or these engines. So yeah, it's going to be a big big scenario for them when you mentioned to me earlier Kayla navas got in Nottingham Forest. It's all about timing. You know, you could have got something like that and for loan to the end of this season of had it got himself angel a little bit earlier. That's a different kettle of fish. Getting that quality keeper and it's a big step up again, I think, for freezer forster. Let's give it further joelson cheery news. You're with gab tomorrow on the garage hills. Within the team, the dressing room obviously the crowd as well. Get him the ball. You know, on the fact he's up against Jamie Miller. So the guy is known for being extra pace. And you see what it does for him. We've got the ball. He's positive and it goes after him. So you just go straight away. Get him the ball. Right. Absolutely. Get on the ball. "Meanwhile, that soccer. Is it hard to stay focused while playing in a game you know is very boring? We played it many boring games. Well, the game's boring up your life. Not really, because that's not your thinking at the time. Right. You try to do your best at all change. Okay. So you're not thinking about it. I think it may be preseason friendlies. I know it's like different. The wasp games are the first couple because you play teams that are in a link, for example, we used to go to Sweden and Norway. We just got all of our Scandinavia and play like second division teams. Right. I would even foster visiting. So they're up for it. And they're not for it, and we'll just starting off. We've hardly kicked the ball and you're in the middle of nowhere. And you're getting beat and you're thinking, how are we going to win the title? We can't even beat us more. I mean, you feel as though you're never going to be able to run again. Yeah. Because you can't catch anybody. People are running past you. You can't pass it straight. It's like, oh, I just wasted a final get away. Shaka would have fallen asleep for sure. Anfield today. Well, I mean, you can fall asleep in a bed of Neil. For the players on the field it wasn't boring. Right. You don't have that sense. Well, this is boring. Well, they cut score. We can't score. Ref. We're just stop the game though. Sorry. Now, no, no. Friendly, so what we like. The three seasons definitely the worst friend lose as well. We're a nationals. Oh yeah, you know, both when you got both teams. Yes. When the players don't know interested. Yeah. Oh, it's awful. Cap, if you ever fall asleep covering a game, I have not fallen asleep, actually, at the stadium, I have seen, I have seen colleagues fall asleep. In fact, in fact, I remember this happening in the press box here in London at West Ham, which is, and this is at the belly ground. So this is at the old ground. Which is actually, you know, it's a pretty noisy place, pretty noisy fans. And I don't know if this particular gentleman who I won't name, I don't know if he had a drink before it was or in the afternoon, but yeah, he was very obviously snoring. And eventually somebody woke up because we didn't want to get in trouble with his boss, but I think there were enough people. I think this might have been just before camera phones were ubiquitous, but yeah, he would have been in serious trouble. I fell asleep at a press conference once, waiting for the player to come. Really? Yeah, that was NATO in the cameraman. And that was one of the another journalists that woke me up. But they took a while. You know when you see the House of Commons and all these politicians. How about when you're sat on the bench? Has it ever been? I suppose you guys didn't spend too much time on a bench, but have you known players to have a little do you don't faux bear famously did it around Madrid when he was there? Fell asleep. Yeah, fell asleep on the bed. You're too busy with my cat. I don't know in the bench. Right. And let's just go final or something. But generally, when you're on the bed, you just messing around. You're messing about. I mean, you're watching again, but you're not. You're not particularly you just. And if something good, if somebody does, something gets megged, then you know, you know, obviously a woman. Plus the fact that if somebody gets injured in the first ten minutes, you're like, get up. You're looking at a clock going off. God, I don't want to come on now. What are you getting are you getting bottles and you see you see the gothams out in the lane and you don't sound like us. So it goes to see you. What you brought on was it for now, 5 now. Up with black von, yeah. Female after 20 minutes. Brilliant. Indeed, plate went like that, and we all went out. "Look as if they might be a chance. And I think what one of the things and summed it up for me in an all quite a few of us back for being through the ring and particularly Alexander Arnold was the winner and I know you talked about this yesterday and van bay Van Dyck looked deserve some did nil these two feet to the floor. He didn't even put a block on. He was kind of and then when the goal would end from Somerville, is that throwing his arms up in the air? And that can he summons Liverpool up for me. It's almost late. It's almost for everybody's looking for another facet of the team to blame. Well, the midfielder not doing that. Well, the forwards are not putting the ball in the net. And they'll say, well, the back four are not defended. And all of those things are true. But it looks as if there's a little bit of a blame game going on there. No, they'll say there's no. They'll say there's not. But when Van Dyck's drawing his arms in the air, when he's one of the ones that could be put in a block on, he's been one of the ones set apart that's been per this year. That's a telling story. But as you said it yesterday, it's Nottingham Forest in legion 82 teams in the bottom three and one week. What you're hearing, Joel's. Not things are really bad. I mean, of course, what we see on the page, but also I think players questioning what's going wrong, what's happening wrong. We heard from trying to run and left it again saying this is something that we all have to address individually was so bad was so wrong. And I think once you start as a player, then you're like, okay, why am I doing wrong, but also what is he doing wrong and him and him and him and the manager Andy, then this is where maybe you have to do it, but I think cropper said many times already in season. Oh yeah, we've had a big meeting. Yeah, the players spoke to each other. We got together the training run and we sorted it out. Clearly not because it's maybe as messy to lose against forest and leads back to back than anything that we've seen so far this season. This is a team that not long ago was beating city on film. And now they lose to the team bottom and second or third from bottom. This is just not good enough and you can say as much as you want, we play every three

You will be making those journeys with your club Nottingham Forest for real this season. And we are taping this on the eve of the campaign. How are you feeling personally? And what do you believe is a realistic goal? No, you have to be excited, but you also have to be confident. I think at a young age, if you come in, you think you know everything, people are just going to kick you to the carbon so these kids. But

"We've got to say, promotion is a thing of wonder, but my God, for a CEO, within a day, you certainly looking at like $220 million that you'll receive for the feet. And a giant challenge that lies ahead, playing against enormous clubs whose electrical bills for the club's shopper as big as forest wage bill. And you know, you're going to get 6 points donated by Everton, but you'll have to somehow master the other 34 you need to survive elsewhere. Can you describe how little times you have to pivot from glory to oh crap? We've got to deal with this challenge and start to make forest Premier League ready. It's a way shorter runway than you think. About 12 hours of celebration and then reality hits. When you get that initial email from the Premier League that says you have to do X, Y, and Z the infrastructure of the stadium has to completely change. You have to bring on two X staff in their liabilities out the door are enormous and you think, well, I haven't even picked up a phone to a club to talk about a player that we want to bring in. You have to get the squad in a place where they can compete week in week out. You try to bring back the core of your team and that you had the season previously, there is a mountain of work involved in getting into the Premier League and it's especially difficult. If you're a Norwich and not to throw any dirt on Norwich, but if you're able to bounce back and forth and you know what's coming, that's one thing. But if you haven't been in the Premier League for 23 years and the Premier League as an entity has completely changed, yeah, it's a monumental task. And it's been honestly since 12 hours after we won the final nonstop to get us prepared. A couple of massive arrivals, you spent a club record 22 and a half $1 million on Nigerian striker te we were woni from union Berlin and one enormous arrival. Jesse Lingard, who arrived in July on the wage that gets bigger every time it's reported by the English tabloids, but it's going to be near the top of the forest locker room wage structure and we love Jesse Lingard on this show. And my story is on a stage is courage, but you're a data gentleman. Can you tell us about your decision to go all in on the player who really is not taking the field too much over the past few seasons? Yeah, I think by the time Jesse's rumored wage stops being bandied about an English journalism, he's going to be up there with Bezos. It's fun to watch, but the truth is never there. The Jesse Lingard acquisition was an easy one from a sporting standpoint. He was free, didn't have to pay a transfer fee. He had a desire to come to Nottingham Forest. He's an exceptional player. He has Premier League pedigree. And there were two elements that he wanted to be close to his family and Manchester, which for a young man of his status is extremely important to hear because there's a priority as an athlete. To do your job because to your family, do what is necessary to be successful. And he also wants to be in the World Cup coming up. And when you have those motivations from a kid who's not another pound and has had a very successful career and is beloved by thousands, if not millions of people, to say my motivations are to have a successful season with not in forest, be close to my family and get myself in the World Cup. Okay, three boxes tick. Let's do what it takes to get him here. And it's really pushed the team forward. He's a great individual. A good person, very good player. And I think he's going to help us tremendously. Dane, we're on seasons eve and I do know Americans will be tuning in to watch and revel in your wonder listeners. Please get to a game at Nottingham Forest

"Nottingham Forest from bottom in September went on to lose just once in their next 17 games. We know what that feels like as fans to go on a winning streak, but can you describe the energy inside the front office when things are finally clicking into place and then term? Are you just good vibes? Are you constantly looking at the data looking for things that are about to go wrong before they as the momentum builds and as the positive results came, you get a feeling of, okay, this may be the turning of the tide. And what we had planned on in the summer of putting a team together that was younger, more dynamic, able to run, create more chances, press higher up the field, all of these ideas that we had to build the team out may be coming to fruition, but you can't get ahead of your skis. And that's the one thing that having the ethos around data and the philosophy of making sure your feet are always on the ground and looking at what's the next step. What's the next 5 games in front of us? How do we have to plan and manage ourselves? Manage our team to be successful. It keeps you grounded. That feeling the momentum really drives you on. It's not momentum. That season, those dreams coming real game after game, you forest Slade arsenal and Leicester City en route to the FA Cup quarterfinals. You really found yourselves coming down the stretch with automatic promotion on the line with the English media just swelling with prognostications of the second coming of Nottingham Forest, but a loss to Bournemouth, cruelly in your second to last game of the season, ceded that automatic promotion spot to the cherries, and so it would be for day Murphy, the playoffs again. But I'm curious, that bonds the experience that wounds still fresh in mind. How are you emotionally ahead of the playoffs when there's so much at stake, the money, the status, the dreams, the shattered dreams. I mean, the playoffs are a cruel bloody blood. They're cruel blood sport. What was your mental state in all honesty you're nervous every step of the way? It's not easy to sleep. In the playoff final at Wembley, your face had this field so much at stake. It was a nervy affair. What is your lasting memory of that Wembley date? Who's a beautiful day? It was a horrible game. Horrible match, but most finals are. I had about 30 to 40 friends and family from the states over for it with your family there, your Friends, your board, everyone who believed in you to get to this point. And you're able to share that with the people that the city ground and at the training ground that got us there. One of those moments, again, that you never will forget and a feeling. It can't be replicated. The following day, thousands of knotty and forest fans pat market square in the city center, and you Dane, you normally are gently prefers to stay in the background, but you were cajoled to come out and wave to the fans and take your moment in the spotlight and I'm fascinated for forest fans. They're long agonizing exile from the top flight over. The lives of the entire city changed. The global fan base filled with joy. I know so many American fans of Nottingham Forest. You were in American from reading Connecticut. You would play the key role in giving them a team that had made those dreams come true. When you're on that balcony, waving. A bit like the Pope. What emotions did you experience? What cars on the table I felt terrible for the night before. I was running on about two hours of sleep. And yeah, I was pushed up onto the stage and I really didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to do the queen's wave or just the silly American wave smile and run. 'cause you look down, there's all the people and they recognize it's you and you're kind of like, oh wait, actually they're applauding me. You don't think about that. I play such a small role in things, but the fact that as a young American who came in and helped get this club to a place where it deserved to be with the help of so many people, it was an amazing reaction. So I did a little bow and a wave, didn't really know what had happened until after and some people showed me and I thought, oh man, my Friends are going to give me a hard time, my family's going to make fun of me until the day I die. But yeah, it was pretty special. I loved it. When it happened in that moment, did any part of you think that the crowd thought you were Jack colback? Maybe I still think half the crowd didn't know who the hell I was. They were just cheering whoever stood up. Yeah. Roger, a lot of research goes into the creation of a men in blazers podcast, thank you, Wikipedia. But the wiki is not

"Up the D.C. was. Nottingham Forest. Spoiler alert listeners, this story ends so well. But for our audience, many of whom are about to watch the mighty Nottingham Forest for the first time in the top flight this season. Can you talk about what forest is this sleeping giant of a grand English football club once champions of Europe 1979 and 1980 and the legendary coach the late Brian clef who essentially is akin to British Bobby Knight, yet the club had fallen so hard, still massive support, both in England and across the world. And a lot of times use this as a cliche, but it really is a club where its history and culture and tradition matter to fans. But how would you describe it and how much of that did you even understand when you first came up? As an American when you come in and people use the phrase over here sleeping giant or club's been dormant for a long time. Yeah, you take in stride and you say, okay, that's a big club. It's got a good history. But until you're on the ground and you speak to the people who've been around the club for a long time in the city in the community, don't really understand what it means and how important it is to regain success. Not just again to the people at the club or even just in the community and city close by globally the supporter base of Nottingham Forest when I arrived. The reception I received, I couldn't believe it. I basically wanted to say, you know, thanks, but you know, judge me in a few months. I think this is really nice and everything, but if this doesn't go well, can you stay as nice to me as you are right now? Because the pressure of realizing how big the club is, what it means, what the history of the two stars represents. On the crest. Yeah, on the crest on the logo, best logo in the world, not biased. You don't know what that feeling is like until you feel it. And I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. I still feel it today. You feel it every day. It means so much to so many, but there's also something greater than just the people around it. There's an aura. There's something in the mist off the Trent. I know that sounds ridiculous and a cliche, but it's true. And as an American who had a successful time at a small club, you then come to forest and you realize, okay, this is a bit daunting. You're in the big leagues now. What are you going to do to provide a true north and a progression path that leads to success? You wasted no time introducing your transfer philosophy to the club, getting rid of Deadwood players on large salaries, using data to find talent that fit the way you wanted to play and it was a massive overhaul of that dressing room. I think like Templars brought in up to 18 release the average age of the team dropped down way down. And did you ever get any pushback? And he resistance from those inside the club who loved that status quo like, who does this American guy think he is turning our club in so I don't know, I think what happened at Barnes in success that Barnsley had allowed me to step into force with some belief when I arrived at Barnsley, it was kind of like who is this kid? What is he gonna do? Is he gonna get us relegated straight away? He doesn't know his ass from his elbow. But when I came to forest, I could feel that not only were they so starved for success, something to bring them back to the Premier League and preeminence in the sport. There was a groundswell of will do whatever you ask. If you can lead us back to where we belong, and that feeling really galvanizes you, it helps you to perform in a way that you know people are behind you and backing you to, yes, implement strategies that are quite different than what has been around before, but those people are going to support you because they know there may be a changing of a tide here. You remind me of that English journalist Daniel's story is a huge knotty and forest fan and he wrote something about the couple of seasons since you were there. He said, Forrest fans have been yearning for a team they could like in the same way as they love the club, but it should be said the season did not exactly start out the way you are hoping. It was not to dredge up bad memories. If something the worst start to a season for the club since 1913, it's astonishing. It really is. This ends well listeners, but forests one just one point from their first 7 games were dead last in the table. The team is flailing. They can be honest. What's your thought process like in that run? It is a moment when even you start to panic. No and to be honest, there wasn't a lot of panic at the city ground because one there were so many games coming. We had cup games and league matches. There was a feeling of when is this going to turn? And it wasn't negative. It was more a drive or a bit of an anger behind it. We're trying to do something new here. It's not working in this moment. When is it going to turn? But what was that turning point going to be? We were kind of all waiting for it. In came a managerial change, young Steve Cooper then, a 41 year old, quite coveted tactical genius from Swansea city, a gent with a stellar reputation, especially for getting the most out of young talent, what was about him that made you sure that he would be the light for the fuse that he was human. Right away when we spoke about as a group as a board that there would have to be a change in the managerial status and the staff, Steve was always the first name on the list. And it was, if Steve wants to come. And if we can figure this out with Swansea, because he had left Swansea that didn't have any residual effects from him ending our season the previously at Barnsley. You work for me now, Steve. I had so much respect for him as a coach and an operator from afar that I just thought, okay, we have to get in front of him, meet him, see what he can bring to the table. And if he is, that person to make it turn. And after the first meeting with him in London, it was a no brainer that we have to get this done by any means necessary. Just because of there was no waiver in his approach. He knew exactly what he wanted to achieve. How to achieve it. He was willing to be collaborative and understand that we have a methodology in our recruitment and he realized the way that he wants to play an exciting attacking brand of football would work well with what our philosophy and ethos was as a club. And he was so genuine. It was this genuine feeling that I had that everything he said and everything that we were discussing. He had a passion about and it wasn't smoke and mirrors. He just wasn't trying to get another job and be at a big club and use it as a stepping stone. He saw for us for what it was and what it could be and really, truly believed he was the person to bring it there. And he was right. The turnaround was a media

"With it. And in 2019, you were hired as a technical director at D.C. United. But you end up staying there for just 6 months because and this is incredible. July 2019 bonds Lee came calling. Barnsley, a mainstay, really of the English second tier over the years, but a club with big ambitions, our great joint friend, Billy Beane, of Moneyball fame, one of the number of investors who put money into the club 5 years ago with the goal of using a data driven approach to try and lift it. And here's what I want to know. What are you leap from D.C. United to Barnsley in the English championship? Watching you make this move, a young American who had no experience at all of English football, arriving a CEO of a bloody proud northern Yorkshire club. How did it even happen? A friendly friend of mine, who was an investor in the club and investing in European football. I said, hey Dane, our CEO is leaving and going to a sister club at nice. Would you be interested? And I laughed. I said, what are you talking CEO of an English football club? I barely know what a technical director does. He gave me a word of I said, Dane, anytime someone your age is offered this. It's very hard to turn down. And most CEOs in the world don't know what a CEO is. They're either under qualified or overqualified. And you get in the position, you run with it. So I said, okay, let's take a shot. You know better than I do. This is not an exaggeration within a week. I had 8 phone calls with the board and the last one was Billy dean. And two days after those phone calls, they offered me the position. That is an incredible life less than most CEOs have no idea what being a CEO is about until they start the job. And you told me a fascinating part of the story was that Billy bean conversation because he asked you if you understood data and statistics, and you are facing up to the king of data here. I mean, Billy Beane knows data like flu from progressive news insurance. Tell us what you said. Yeah, I mean, very quickly on the call with Billy. I realized how genuine he was and he just not a bullshit artist. I don't know if that's allowed on, but going with it. We have our general conversation introduction, what we thought about sports, both our backgrounds, got to know each other, as their synergy there, and a friendship that's been kindled since then. But at the end of the call, he basically said, okay, Barnsley is based around data implementation. That's how we first cut and looking at our recruitment. What do you know about data analytics? And I said, Billy, honestly, I don't know the first thing. And he paused, it was about 20 seconds, and he said, just writing this down because I'm going to recommend you. You're the first one. I've talked to three under the candidates who all said, I know everything about data. And I asked them the most basic questions and they didn't know a thing. And you were the only one who was honest, and I was like, yeah, well, I'm honest because I want to learn. And I'm being honest and saying, I don't know the first damn thing. So he was able to take that and say, yeah, okay, this kid, I can maybe mold a little bit, and he'll come help progress what we're trying to do at Barnsley. Listen to this, this is such a bloody important life lesson, always beat yourself authentic, human beings win. But can you describe that learning curve? Because you were rolling up there at Barnsley. For those of you who don't know, is in Yorkshire, the tykes. It's all cool country. It's been compared by some cultural experts roughly to Appalachia, a fantastic part of Britain, but my God, not always one that's welcoming of strangers on first blush, particularly not one with an American accent. Because English football is so bloody different to MLS and you gave a great quote around that time, you said learning how to navigate the European transfer market was like learning a new language day. You in temporary housing. It's cold. It's where culture shock must have been off the charts. How would you lead with authority when you don't really know yourself what you're doing? Yeah, it's a very good question. So it felt like just from the footballing side and getting to know the English slash European market that I was thrown into the deep end with weights on my ankles and floaties on my arms. Didn't know which way was up or down or east or west and I was navigating that, learning that language, as you said, and then also trying to learn the language that's in Yorkshire in particularly Barnsley because you can't understand a thing that they're saying. But over time, it was those people who at first looked at me and said, who the hell is this young American? He doesn't know anything. That actually work the impetus to allow me to grow into where I am now, because they were so helpful, first off the love of their club. They thought, okay, this guy's coming in at CEO. We could down tools. We could go on our corners, but then my town, my city, the club that I love, goes down. So let's try to help this kid out and be a united front and keep Barnsley in the championship. That first season, bit of a baptism of fire. We need to say the club was back in the championship after being in League One. They struggled to adjust. You lost nearly twice as many games as you were. You were hovering around the drop zone or in it for much of the season. I think you escaped relegation on the final day. And you also had to deal with the league shutdown and the challenge of those awful first pandemic months. This is football and its most savage least glamorous and you've said you learn more in that first year than you've learned in your entire life. What were the most important lessons? Yeah, maybe more than I'll ever learn to be honest because it came in the middle of the window. We signed 12 or 13 players in that window to get ready for the championship season. We won our first game at home against Fulham, favorites to go back up. And then we didn't win for 17. And it was like taking up brick to the face every weekend or every weekday. And as another goal would go in at oakwell and the fans would turn around and look at me or say something or I was like, yeah, this is going to be a bumpy road. We had a work stoppage because of the pandemic. And then when we came back, we were flying out of the gates. The last game the last day against Brentford at Brentford with a one, we're going to the Premier League. We scored the 94th minute to stay up, and I don't think I will ever have an emotion again. Like I felt at the end of that, because it was myself. My now wife, and taymor rushdie, who's our head of football administration now at forest, who's been with me at Salt Lake, Barnes, and now forest. Three of us versus, you know, I won't put Brentford in a bad light, but in an illegal amount of people in the stands during the pandemic rooting to go to the Premier League and it was an outpouring of emotion and a feeling that don't think I'll ever have again. I am fascinated by your data analysis because can you talk about what you do following the data? How much is plugging things in according to needs and then waiting for them to bear fruit and how much is reactive making calls based on what you have right in front of you in the moment? The strategy of Barnes is one of the most attractive things when they actually first called this and I didn't have to be sold the position was something I never expected. But one of the selling points was we are going to use data and our recruitment. But also built around how we're trying to play. And that means not just recruiting the players, but the coaching staff as well to implement a system that we feel we can compete in the championship with and over time these players that we're buying at a market value that may be lower than what we actually feel off the data is. As you said, would bear fruit and we would have success with them. To have their return on investment build as the clubs standing built. And we progress forward. And that season between the first campaign and my second season with borrowings, it was so important that we actually stuck to the strategy and the plan that we kept our core group together. We brought in some new pieces based off of data and the style of play that we wanted to implement no matter who the opponent was or what scenario came our way.

"Guest today is one of the most Intrepid Americans in world football a 36 year old gen who's made an incredible leap into the unknown. Embarking on an adventure. It's been like a journey through an enchanted forest for MLS player to the front offices of the English championship CEO and that sleeping giant of English football Nottingham Forest, who in partnership with a bold young coach in a delirious fan base. He was able to resurrect and lead back to the Premier League promised land. After 2020 long years, out at the top flight, Nottingham Forest, the back. And on the eve of their first top flight season, in over two decades, it is a true joy to welcome the greatest Dane since Kierkegaard. Yes, it's not a forest CEO. Live from his office, the one and only mister Dane Murphy. What an intro. How are we doing, roger? It feels like a work of fiction that intro day. Does it to you? It's incredible. That was pretty much stuck on the pond of the enchanted forest. We work hard. We work hard, but Dana why I go back all the way to the beginning, you were raised in Redding Connecticut. Something of an exploding soccer hotbed in the 80s and 90s. You've said that your father fell in love with the sport while working in the oil industry with people from all over the world. I think he was an A.C. Milan supporter, pushed you towards the sport, but growing up in 1990s Connecticut, what was football to you because am I correct? Your first love was actually basketball. That's right, basketball was the first love, and that's what most of my friends and I played. But reading is a very small town in Connecticut, but we had a pretty strong soccer club and the local high school was very good. It wasn't the prettiest thing on earth, but they were very successful. It's my little bit of background. My father played American football, and he was all jacked up, shoulders back, knees, had nothing left. He pushed us all into soccer because he realized, yeah, basketball is great and tracks great, but if you really want to make a wave, maybe soccer is more the profile. Smart move on his part. Plastics is the future. Exactly. My sister is the first one to jump in the sport and then my brother and I was the youngest tagging along and fell in love with it. It may have been your sister who was the pioneer, but the football thing worked out pretty well for you too. You had a solid proof playing career four years at UVA, wahoo. Very full signing with D.C. you know he did stint at osnabruck in Germany and three years with New York cosmos for those who were never blessed to see you play. Aside from the fact that back then, you look like Machine Gun Kelly and cleats. How would you describe Dave Murphy as a player? Was a runner ran around a lot. It was very good at kicking people. I did my job as a 6 filler. I played simply, and when I could hit someone I would. As lalas used to advise a generation of American youths kick hard. You actually retire quite early earlier than you had to, I think the age 28 and you moved into front office work immediately. You've said you always knew you wanted to stay involved in football after your retirement and a lot of people in your position would have gone right into the coaching side, but you told me that you knew you wouldn't have the temperament for that because you play was really built on an anger that had no emotional eye. I came to a point in my life where I realized, okay, the sport is not going to be the end all be all. I'm not going to retire and move to some island. And have made enough money. And I love the game. I still love the game. I always will, but the love to play wasn't there, to travel to Indianapolis, Antonio, and each weekend not seeing family and friends and missing things. I didn't have the temperament. I still don't have the temperament to coach. How would you describe that temperament? Well, as an Irish Catholic and putting it politically correct, I have a short fuse. It really worked on the field for a long time, allowed me to continue to play the game as long as I could and even maybe longer than some might have with my skill set. But I also knew there were some areas of life afterward where. In my temperament, my emotional decision making probably needed to be boxed off and channeled somewhere else. And it was geo saver easy. Now manager of Portland then your head coach of the cosmos who gave you a chance on the technical side, you were head scout for the cosmos before you moved to real Salt Lake in 2017. First as head scout, then as technical director. And I know from talking to you that my God, you hustled as a scout. It's really a traveling salesman of a life on the road. Everyone a football's most thankless tasks and you also realize quickly, however much fun it was as a 20 something you looked at the elder statesman in the role of 50 and 60 year old lifers and you realize that wasn't for you. I'm indebted to the fact that I was able to have that role because I wouldn't be here without it. It taught me a lot. It was very fun at the time in the beginning because I was at an age where you can travel and you can have fun and you watch football and it's really not a bad life. But after a while, you look around and you say, okay, you had two goals, which one was to be a player and the other was to be a GM, a technical director, sporting director. Is being a scout for a long time sustainable in the market that you want to get into probably not. So I tried to make as many inroads as quickly as I could. Network, meet people, show how good my work could be in a way that would allow me to climb. I know some people think, you know, scouting is this glorious role where you get to go watch games. When you're really into it and you're trying to make a mark, think about how many people around the world are watching the same players. It's very difficult. As you said, it can be thankless at times. So if you're able to make an impact and improve the team that you're working for, they're called that you're working for or clubs,

"He was down. And it's almost as if, as he's seen that ball go in, he's seen the World Cup go by. Ouch. Casey, you agree, painful. Unfortunately, yeah, I mean, it's tough because first and foremost, if El Salvador scores a goal where they just slam some ball in the upper corner, nobody's going to look at Ethan horvath for anything. They're going to look at all the other things he did and recognize that that was a potential goal that you have no chance on. But okay, how was your positioning? How was your distribution? How was how are you coming for crosses? How did you kind of handle all those other situations on a difficult pitch? But instead, you get caught cheating on a cross and have no reaction to come back and try to recover, yeah, that's tough. That's a tough one to swallow when your opportunities. I mean, we're assuming that Ethan horvath was not penciled in to play in the two friendlies in September. So either he has to win the starting job at Nottingham Forest and have a lights out start to the season to get himself back into the equation because I think really when you saw the two matches that were given to one first dish on Johnson and then to Ethan horvath, all right, let's see how either of them do in these two matches to try to make that decision on that third spot. And it has to be advantage Sean Johnson..

For you i will always go back to borrow after their thing to happen to you with the borough gave to the other night. Okay so thank. Let's just stay there and keep on a borough positive.
