"Go in. Feel confused. Here's the thing, man. I think Brad Kelly is a really good football coach. All right, that's number one. So I'm excited that LSU has the potential to have a really good football coach and win games. I grapple with how he left Notre-Dame though. I grapple with that a lot bro. The more and more I think about it. And I understand it's a business. I understand it. But I also don't take the human side of it away. And knowing that you left that thing kind of crazy, man. You know, if you're gonna take the job or if you know you're gonna take the job pull your guy, pull your team in a room and face them before it get out. Two recruited. Yeah, this is the problem I had with Brian Kelly in that particular situation. He said he didn't mean for it to get out in the media. Before he had a chance to talk to his players, say, bro, what do what? Hold on, my secret and jumped in my show. How did she ever come up? Did I say Siri? No. We have some issues. We have everybody. We do these zones on computers. And I don't know if I said Siri, but Siri just popped up and was like, what can I help you with? You know what the hell you can help me with Siri? You can help me be not confused about Brian Kelly's situation. That's what you can help me with. All right, let me get back to what I was saying. Brian Kelly, the way he left Notre-Dame could be a character flaw. And that's what that's the thing that I'm cautious about. Because what I was saying earlier is he said he didn't mean for it to get out, but the problem is perk, the negotiations didn't start the day to story was leaked. You've been in these, man, you knew what was coming, man. Yeah. Like this ain't catch you off guard. So look, there's two things can be true. I'm happy unless you got a coach that I think is a good football coach and they can win with. I'm also a little concerned about the character in which highly in the way he left Notre-Dame. And that's it. That's how can I feel like that perk? Yeah. You had the right you know what I'm saying? Because ultimately, ultimately, bro, the one thing people will never accuse me and you of on this podcast,.

"notre" Discussed on ESPN Daily

"So Dave Wilson, I have summoned you here today because I want to talk to you about a college football icon. Really, but the icon is not a player, it's not a coach. It's not a stadium. It's not even like a game or anything. It's a sign. So tell me about this sign. Where is it? What is this thing even look like? It's in the hallway, leading from the locker room down to the field at Notre-Dame stadium. It's a gold sign. It was hand painted with blue lettering, about three feet high, four feet wide. And it's this play like a champion today. Yeah, I mean, this is a sign that is not just a thing you sort of look at and venerate if the thing you physically interact with. Yeah, it's a tradition that Notre-Dame for players to hit the sign on their way down the field. It's you've seen it all over the place. They play it before games. I mean, this thing is in movies, right? I mean, it's on television on these NBC broadcasts of Notre-Dame games, but it's also like in cinema also. Yeah, in Rudy, the famously the players on their way to the field are all fired up and go hit the sign. It's just becomes synonymous with Notre-Dame. As the name players now leave their renovated locker room. With their individual gesture on the two sides on the way down the steps as they get set to come out of the north tunnel. Yeah, I mean, this is where I admit Dave that I visited Notre-Dame once. I brought back a pint glass with play like a champion today emblazoned on it in the blue lettering that you were describing. I was watching Ted Lasso and they have a sign that says believe that they slap above their doorway and it's in blue lettering with the yellow background, perhaps not coincidentally. So this thing, which is a famous piece of sports history that's meaningful to generations of players and people at this point. Why did you want to dig into this? Why dig deeper into the story of the play like a champion today sign? I just happened to be in Oklahoma covering the Oklahoma Nebraska game. And that was a Saturday. Just two days previously Notre-Dame had announced a licensing deal with a company for a play like a champion today. And everyone in Oklahoma seemed to really up in arms about it. And so I was really curious why that was. Dave, the story that you've reported here is a real rabbit hole. A mind-blowing one for me 'cause I knew nothing of the alternate hidden history of the sign, but I want to just start here and explain for people how this started at Notre-Dame because in your piece you talked to a player on the team there who arrived in 1989. And this is Rick Meyer, who is a star quarterback was the future number two overall pick in the draft and the NFL. What did he tell you about Notre-Dame football and the religion of it, really? Well, I mean, obviously, he grew up in Indiana, he grew up a big part of this, and he said when he got to know today, he didn't realize the sign hadn't been there already for 50 years. He thought. And he just said, the locker room was psyched, the stairwell was sacred. The tunnel sacred, and that sign was a big part of that. The fact that he thought that the sign was there forever as I did. Also, incidentally, that's not the case. It turns out what did you learn about when the sign was actually put up there? So I talked to Lou holt, who is the coach who got hired in 1985, and he said that over the fall break that year, there were no there was nothing to do. There's no recruiting going on. So he went to the library and just checked out as many noted aim history books as he could find. Amanda motel, which I stay in until my family moved down, and I go through the book and somewhere there's a picture in a book, the entrance way into the stadium down the step and there's a sign play like a champion today. So I started asking around what happened to a sign hooper? Nobody could tell me nobody knew anything about it. And so I said, okay, I'll tell you what. We're going to get this made up. And so he sent an assistant coach to the sign shop on campus and asked them to make one up and it was up for the 1986 season. I mean, this is a scene out of a movie, Dave, Lou holtz like blowing dust off of ancient books in the university library, trying to restore the glory of this program. And I don't want to like credit the sign too much here, I suppose, but Notre-Dame did start winning championships at this point again, right? I mean, it was 1988 when they win a title with Lou holds the team becomes a media darling to put it lightly. I mean, I think of Notre-Dame football now and I still think of touchdown Jesus, the weights on the gold helmets and this sign from 1986. Right. In 1988, they win that national title still actually their last national title. And then 1991, they become the first program to get their own TV deal when NBC gave them that giant one team deal. This sunny and cold Saturday in the South Bend Indiana is a mild stone day, the 300th game in historic. Yeah, I mean that deal day for people aren't familiar with it. Just describe how unique that is, how Notre-Dame has used that to market itself to the planet basically. It's funny because people don't realize now that all these games were on TV, there were two or three games a week. Notre-Dame got a deal where they were they had their own time and place every week on a national network. And that was just unheard of. And NBC, I mean, they were in subtle about them showcasing the sign, right? They were not. They put what's called a lipstick camera, one of the little mounted cameras in the hallway there. And it showed every week they show the players coming down those steps and hitting that sign. Down the steps of the locker room into the tunnel. For the final time this year here comes the Irish. John heisler, who worked at Notre-Dame for 40 years and wrote several wrote ten books, I believe about the Irish said that when people would come to town, that was the first thing they asked him is when could they go see the sign? It was more popular than going to a football game. Heissler told me there were probably he counted more than 40 products in the bookstore featuring the sign. It just became sort of like a synonymous withholds and Notre-Dame in that era. And it just took off. So the person who made the sign for Lou holtz. I mean, this is a real person. Is this in a movie character? Who is she? Her name is Laurie wenger. She worked on campus painting signs, and it was just, you know, she said it was just part of her daily job, someone an assistant coach came over with instructions from holtz on what he wanted and Lou said he was very specific about what he wanted play like on one line, a champion on one line. And today, on the last line, and she painted it to his specifications. You report that all of these fans and former players would then also commission Laurie directly to make them their own version of the sign? Right, so she gets an order. She gets a request to paint the sign. She makes one and her husband delivers it. And it turns out it's Rudy, who had ordered it. So this is the real Rudy. This is Rudy rudiger in real life who is doing it. Where is he putting this thing? What's he doing with it? He's, you know, as our friend Ryan McGee wrote last year about Rudy, he's got basically a whole nother day museum in his house. So he just wanted one more one more piece of memorabilia up there..

Let's not worry about that. One but i will say the most popular story as far as like who. The ghost is is the gipper george. The gipper gipp. Okay so he As you told us the story earlier. Risa when you when you look at this up It's always you know the nineteen twenty story that he got back late. You know had to sleep outside. Got sick and died all of that okay. So that was nineteen twenty during the nineteen twenty five to twenty six school year. A student from brazil named okay. Peo- montenegro was the first to say that he saw a ghost at washington hall. Montenegro said he saw the ghost of george gap on a white horse galloping up the stairs and through the entrance of the hall so the story of gap haunting the hall has stuck ever since But the one one thing They say is. This is the only report of seeing this goes outside of the hall. Every other report has been inside And i will also say there's other reports people..

"The gipper along with his deathbed line that he attributed to give to rally his team to twelve to six upset of the previously undefeated army team in nineteen twenty eight okay so he waited eight years to use that line well and i made. It was true if it was true. Yeah i'm my favorite. Notre dame story was rudy rudy. Grew up in joliet illinois. He was the third of fourteen children. He re- he never really did well at school because He found out later on that he was dyslexic. Which in the nineteen sixties was not diagnosed. It's still a lot of times. it's not. He played football for the joliet catholic highschool which i used to i. I didn't go there. But i i went there several times to do blood drives and stuff so i definitely been on that campus. He didn't have much hope for a stable career so he decided to join the navy after high school and after that he worked at a power plant for two years so he was in the navy for two years he worked on this power plant for two years and then he decided to apply for notre dame you know with the gi bill. Yeah so But his grades were just too low to get into school so he enrolled in a nearby school called holy cross college and he worked his butt off to get his grades better and after two years he was accepted by notre dame and fourth try. He played four times so it had been his dream to go to notre dame but he was also is dream to play football for the fighting irish but he was too short he was five six and he was too small was one hundred and sixty five pounds. He again worked his butt off and was allowed to join their Scout or practice team and it took until his senior year for him to have a chance to actually play november. Eighth nineteen seventy five. He didn't get on the field until the last three plays of the season. And on the third play though. He sacked the quarterback. He was carried off the field by his teammates. Following the game. And he holds the honor of being the first man carried off the field of a notre dame gain and since then only one other player has held that honor and that was mark edwards in nineteen ninety five and they made a movie about rudy story and in that movie They actually filmed at the high school. That i went to high school with and filmed on the field that i played football. That's amazing because i love them movie like that. I totally. that's the when. I think of notre dame football. That's the story that i think of and it's more modern day. Oh definitely i was. Yeah but that's amazing that they filmed where you played football. That's cool in rudy. Went on to become a motivational speaker. And get into some trouble with the law. Which i don't really want to go over this podcast because it kind of brings down my image of room. But yeah it's it's still an inspirational story and that you're not too old to go back to school and that you know if you.

"And then how is notre dame here irish lad irish there. I'm guessing. yeah george. Gipp played football for notre dame from nineteen seventeen to nineteen twenty. He was born in michigan in the upper peninsula. He came to notre dame to play baseball but he was recruited for the football team. Gipp lead the fighting irish in rushing and passing. He actually has some records. That are still on the books today. So there's a story about how Gipp died and it's probably not true at all though. Just tell you well let me something we talk about. But it's definitely worth mentioning and talking about when we talk about notre dame footba so. He was out late one one night and he returned to campus after curfew. He couldn't get into his dorm so he went to the rear door of of the washington hall. Which is The campus theater building and he went there because he knew that the door was often unlocked so when he partied a little too late he would often spend the night there but on that night. The hall was locked tight. He slept outside and by the morning he had contracted pneumonia and eventually died from a related infection now. The more likely story is that he got strep throat while giving punting lessons after his final game which was november twentieth nineteen twenty against northwestern another college around the area here and since there are no antibiotics in one thousand nine hundred ninety s These things were very hard to treat and it became much worse and eventually took him down. But rebecca you probably don't remember him. I football playing do you. Have you ever heard of this man get. This is not sound familiar to me. I mean it does because i've done research both researching this episode. If you had said yeah. Who's the most famous football player. Whatever no i would not have thought of this name. But he's not just famous for the way that he played football. He was on his hospital. Bed said this to a football coach. Name rodney i've got to go rack. It's all right. I'm not afraid sometime rock when the team is up against it when things are wrong and the breaks are beating. The boys asked them to go in there with all they've got and win. Just one for the gipper. I don't know where. I'll be then rock but i'll know about it and i'll be happy. Yeah so he was the gipper that you know. Everyone's talked about when they say when one for the gipper. Okay so i'm just gonna. I'm gonna be vulnerable here and saying that when ever heard the phrase win win for the gipper. My brain has always thought of ronald reagan. You know y why okay. I did not until researching this. Ronald reagan played the gipper gipper in movie. And so like i. I swear. I've heard people refer to ronald. Reagan is the gipper and it never made any sense to me. I didn't understand any of it. But would he was playing this character with ronald reagan. A lot of times Like he took on the personality of the person that he played and People gave gave him credit for the things that those people did. I so anyways all right so the gipper is this guy played. Football got it. So rodney used the story of gipp..

"Under the name of the university of notre dame du lac Which is the university of our lady of the lake so Notre dame is just our lady and notre dame do lock means the lady of the lake university of the lady of the lake. I love it. Yeah because the university was originally a male female only saint. Mary's college was founded by the sisters of the holy cross near notre dame in eighteen forty four so shortly after. Yeah that's amazing in eighteen. Forty nine notre dame awarded. Its first degrees. So that's a long time ago it's been operating that's amazing. Yeah definitely especially for a private college like this. That doesn't get the same government funding. Exactly soren strength was demonstrated on april twenty third eighteen seventy nine when a fire destroyed the main building which housed virtually the entire university and also the library. Oh and their library was was pretty big. At that time. It had like a thousand bucks at that time so sad. Yeah timothy edward howard Which became a chief justice at the indiana supreme court and he was also a professor at notre dame provided a first person account of what soren said inside the sacred heart church. I was then president when father soren after looking over the destruction of his life work stood at the altar steps of the only building left and spoke to the community. What i have always felt to be the most sublime winds ever listened to there was absolute faith confidence resolution in his very look and pose. If it were all gone. I should not give up. His words enclosing. The effect was electric. It was the crowning moment of his life. A sad company had gone into the church that day. They were all simple christian. Heroes came out. There was never more shadow of a doubt as to the future of notre dame. Yeah what's kind of funny too. Is that some people. Recall him saying something like the virgin. Mary thought it wasn't big enough. The building oh so that's why she burned down. Wow so that we will have to build bigger. Okay yeah nation. I'm i don't know if he actually said that. But a lot of people recalled hearing him say they'll time Soren passed away on october thirty first eighteen. Ninety three at the age of seventy-nine he's laid to rest at the holy cross cemetery in notre dame he died of bright's disease which is a historical classification of kidney disease. So during sorin's years at notre dame he saw a lot of new buildings being built including an eighteen eighty eight they opened the basilica of the sacred heart. The first notre dame football team. I played in notre dame on november twenty third. Eighteen eighty seven nearly forty five years to the day after father sworn arrived in northern indiana. The university chose to honor the irish with the name. The fighting irish Which you would think they would have called the fighting french right. Well when you said the six priests sounded like there were more irish than french. I mean obviously soren was french. But i also chicago and this whole area has a lot of irish and i assume a lot of irish catholic parents would have wanted to send their kids there. Yeah but it is interesting that it's not that the name of the university is french. Yeah but the name of the football team is irish. Because i always thought you know. Notre dom is in is in france so it has to be french..

"I watched the clips of brian. Kelly press conference and he looked like he was exact exasperated. And i don't know if you're a notre dame fan. How do you feel about this. Because he's i mean he's a really really good coach. We do these top. Twenty five lists every year and brian. Kelly definitely should be in the top five and they have really good players. But i don't know and he's right alabama's done this to almost everybody. They actually didn't do it. The florida but you know was there were still you know it's like we'll see if ohio state gets closer. So let's let's fill people in on the quotes if they didn't see them after the game not surprisingly. Maybe he was surprised. I don't know he was asked a lot about. How does the here how frustrating the question was how frustrated is. How frustrating is it to get to a playoff again lose by this margin the margin not the issue. Losing his losing. I don't know really. What the inferences. This football team battled and they made more plays they being alabama made a few more. Plays on the perimeter. I'm not sure really what the question is when you lose football games you know. There's a few more plays jeff to make. We had the opportunity. You watch the game. I watched the game <hes>. So everybody needs to continue to carry this narrative that not not good enough. Look at the scores of the games. The albums played all year. And i think when you start changing the narrative little bit then somebody asks as you look at it. You feel like the program has gotten a lot closer. What's the next step. You feel like you guys could take need to take i. I don't really wanna continue to go down this path. We're going to keep getting here okay. And we're gonna keep banging at it and you guys watched the game in you. They had the college football player of the year. Who made some dynamic place. We battled. We were right there. So we're going to keep getting back here. And i'm sorry i don't like it or the national media doesn't like it but we're going to go back to work we're gonna keep recruiting. We're going to put ourselves back in this position again <hes>. I mean i know. He's got to defend the program. And you know what's he going to say like. Oh yeah we're we're we've got a ways to go <hes>. But you're right like if you're ordering fan who who still believes deep down the program. That should win the national championship. How do you feel about your coach. Basically coming on saying he's basically trying to say yeah. We don't have a devante smith. We don't have nausea harris. But we were good enough that like if we caught them on the day we could one maybe is that is that we took from it. Yeah and i'm thinking about it. It's like this notre dame team. And i would say it from the last from the jalen smith <hes>. Ronnie stanley era up. So whatever it is i guess. Maybe it's the last five or six years they've had like some special athletes right. I mean ronnie stanley elite talent offensive lineman jalen field. Jalen fields. Jalen was is home. Ultra talented linebacker. They've had <hes>. Kyle hamilton is as athletic as any any safety. The country i mean they have some of these guys will fuller was as fast and dynamic as any receiver just about. I mean it's not like they haven't kyran williams of big time running back they just don't have quite enough of them right. I mean like they don't have any of them. It's not like you know. The the line from joey galloway said like northwestern's a bunch of reese davis's you know the inference there is like notre dame has has some guys who would play anywhere and they've always had a bunch of good offensive linemen. They have good tight ends. I don't think they're light years away from having like a team that could win a national title. I mean they're they're a top five team. It's just you know. I don't know like like maybe this is a better way to frame it. Like if they were playing ohio state they have somehow gotten by alabama. I mean <hes>. Let's take alabama out of the equation if they were playing ohio state and somehow it was a two three game. Let's say let's say that it was just a playoff game but it wasn't. You know as the i. I could see <unk>. Notre dame beating ohio state. Even after what. I just saw from ohio state alpha. If justin feels plays away did tonight. I couldn't but <hes> like i don't think it's out of the realm of possibility like i think there are. You know i watched their. I think notre dame's better team than georgia. I think not notre dame honesty's a better team than florida now. It's easy to say that after you've seen some of these teams get exposed some but lake and those teams. Those teams have played with alabama on a given night right. So i just don't think they have as much margin for error right

"The red zone was awash. Notre dame was three for six touchdowns in the red zone. Clemson was three for five so both had three touchdowns but we all do know what happens. Now right clemson will beat notre dame and acc championship game with trevor lawrence. Chaos will ensue about notre dame making the cfp and they will have a point or let's look at history. Let's go back seventeen or twenty seven years. Nineteen ninety-three notre dame defeats number one on the final play in south bend. Twenty twenty notre dame to fits defeats number one clemson on the final play in south bend. Nineteen ninety-three notre dame loses to boston college the very next saturday. Twenty twenty notre dame. Plays boston college this saturday. Could it be. Could jeff happily repeat history from twenty seven years ago. Doubt it but could be cool. Go be fun to watch. Maybe the owed the boston college. Eagles will upset the new leader in. Acc what a game that would be but all in all phenomenal football game. I mean just phenomenal mistakes. But not not a ton. Good good offense defense. The line play for notre dame was so impressive ian book. His competitive nature was impressive. Hats off to notre dame. You won a big time game for the first time since i can remember. I don't even know the last big game they won. I mean going all the way. Back to two thousand twelve getting smoked by alabama. They finally won a big game. I know clemson was injury ridden. I know that reality reality. They won this football game in impressive fashion and they are the the ruler in acc anyways. That's forty-three minutes of college. Football content from minnesota sports four free. Thank you for tuning in. i appreciate it. If you wanna hear the buckeye first quarter season update. You have two options. You can check it out..

"Does how does that change. Notre dame's game plan against a dj who anglais played well last saturday. So does the game plan change that much. Or how's the defense gonna play the clemson differently now while i mean i considered trevor lawrence the best college quarterback as a pro prospect since andrew. Lock so. I don't think you have to defend the entire field at all times the way you would with trevor lawrence. I think he is above and beyond a five star. Prospect is the way to describe it right in. La may maybe he will match that eventually. But i rode star You know. I really full week of practice as the starter to right as you find out on thursday the as already in the barn for boston. College I think if you're notre dame you could probably be a little bit more basic than you would have been with trevor lawrence. I don't not that. You're gonna trick trevor lawrence but i think you have to be very conscious of him picking out your tendencies as the game unfolds. Whereas i'm not sure that is going to be the case for the freshman making his first start on the road so maybe load the box a little bit more. Maybe you sort of play the zone. Read to for him to give it. Because i really think that thirty. Rtd ronnie ad against boston college was sort of one of those moments where you're like all right. This is a little bit different than what you see from your typical quarterback. Not that lawrence couldn't do that you just have to So that's that's a little bit interesting. I don't know we. I don't think notre dame is actually gonna try to trick comes on saturday night but i don't think they have to be so hyper aware of Tonioli picking out ten season. Dj being able to capitalize them on them just because he hasn't he hasn't done it as much as as trevor lawrence has yeah in props by the way on the pronunciation there. Have you spent like. I've been working on that. I was gonna ask you. I've put it in a few hours. I think of of mistakes here on the podcast. Mispronouncing his name. So i'm glad you're you're on top of it there. Okay so after notre dame beat georgia tech. You wrote that the all american safety kyle. Hamilton is one of the reasons that notre dame could beat clemson next week for those of us. I must admit that. I haven't seen a ton of notre dame play this year so tell tell us what makes them special and then also can you give us the names of some other players who you think will swing this game and notre dame's favor you know kyle hamilton number fourteen. Sophomore safety was five. Sorry thank on. Twenty four seven sports. You're six four to twenty to twenty five. So he's really uniquely put together And incredibly studious studier of tape. And you're the place. He made a store check. They had a fourth sort. Reverse ron through. Reverse six yard loss to mike in batted away and i would say like the way. He batted away that pass at the end of the game. Reminded me of isaiah simmons batting way that passed the miles boykin in the cotton bowl. Very casual Because he knows where the ball is going to go at all at all times. I do think this is unlike twenty. Eighteen where clemson's offense of skill firepower blew him off. The field at clemson to me is not nearly as good now as it was that With there's no tee higgins no justin. Ross who still vermont. Rogers and i and i would argue that the ring secondary is more athletic now than it was then even though they had some. Nfl guys in that group in kyle. Hamilton's a huge part of that. I think the other potential difference maker as jeremiah Supermo is outside linebacker the lineup over the slot. He's number six There's actually. I believe going to be a feature on game day about him on saturday incredibly violent hitter but also athletic drop into coverage in. Take away a guy in the flat. I think that matchup with travesty if they get going in the flat or they send out wheel route. I would love to see car. Try to run with them and see what happens. I mean now that would be one of those like first-round pick on round pick type of matchups Let the best man win but those are those are two guys. I think in the back. Seven that notre dame didn't have the those athletes two years ago and if clemson was just as good now as they were then. I'm not necessarily sure that it would matter but i. I don't see clemson having that scare you to death. Wide receiver really on. Outside both numbers right higgins andros now. It's just roger. So that's one of the bats. I think notre dame has gotten closer to clubs in the last two years But is that going to be enough on saturday. I don't know but hamilton sukhoi mow. Those are those are league defensive skill guys. That doesn't have a lot of all right. We'll definitely be keeping our eyes on those guys and you notre dame seems to be catching clemson as you mentioned at the right time. Clemson hasn't been able to keep their wide receivers on the field and the guys who they thought. Were going to step up for sure. Have it yet. And so that's one of my big concerns going into this game absolutely. Let's let's talk about notre dame's offense real quick and to me in book is sort of an enigma. I i like. I said i haven't watched a lot a lot of tape. But every time the stat lines don't seem to impress me. Let's put it that way. And i know that's not fair. You shouldn't just look at the stat lines but notre dame oftens have. Let's say this game gets into a shootout. Are they gonna have enough firepower to keep up in a shootout tapa game. No absolutely not. The team built to school or thirty five points. I'm clemson So like how do you manage that. I think in some ways you have to lean into that fact if you're tommy research offensive coordinator who is a former player. Here is i. I would expect play a lot of ball control Take the arrow shorten the game. I didn't notre dame could definitely win a game in the twenties gets into the thirties. I wouldn't feel good about that. Gets into high thirties. That's forget it. I just don't think notre dame has that in its bag right now offensively. It's a you mentioned clinton's receivers there so they have. They have a lot of potential guys that they're sorting through. No-name doesn't really have even potential is it. It's as pedestrian a group of receivers with brian. Kelly has had They have a grad transfer from northwestern who is started giovane mckinney's a fifth year. Seniors had a couple good games this season. But it's not. it's not somebody i think. In in a big moment you're going to be able to rely on a whole lot. So i you know been very much. A twelve personnel team. Too tight ends tight. Ends are really good Michael mayors future pro for sure. He's a freshman. Tommy tremble has been very good this year. Their offense line has been solid to spectacular time. So i would expect him to know that it cannot win in a shootout and play accordingly on offense and defense and i think keeping the score down with your own offense. What sounds weird to say i. It's best shot to sort of get this into the fourth quarter. Then take your chances if you can make a play here there. Get over the top. Will you may have answered my next my next to last question here and that was going to be helped me fill in the blank blank is why notre dame will beat clemson. I ignore names. Run game has to be as good as it's been all year and they they've had a lot of really good game so it's not like they need to be out of character. I think that the aside from turnover stuff. That's obvious but like ian book will have to make a couple of throws said. He has not made this year. I think that's where he would have to step out of character in it. I'm not talking about. He needs to hit a sixty yard post. But there have been some moments where they've had either michael mayor one tight end or tommy trumbull another tight end leak out on a wheel route. And they're wide. Open for a twenty five yard touchdown down by the five ten yard line where they just walk in from. Their book is under a little bit of duress float to the ball Mrs long on both of those that to me. That's that's the throw. He asked to make on saturday night for notre dame to win. I don't you can't beat comes in playing one handed. One hand is really good like they have a great run game but hudson's gail take that away with brian venables. If book cannot hurt them either in the play action game or just finding tight ends down the seems The at to me. That's that's sort of the micro part about books game. That has to be better on saturday night than it really has been all season for him to win. Man is going to be fun. I'm so excited for this. It's going to be a blast all right so last question. I don't know if you predictions or not but what's kind of the what's what's your final headline your postgame headline after this game man. I like clemson to win the game. Not for the sort of like bad mojo notre dame in big spots. I just think that they're more talented You know they've got they've got more options. And i realize it's not a. It's not like the clinton team of twenty eighteen by any stretch right now but. I think that if book had shown me a little bit more over the previous six weeks. I think i would be willing to walk out on the lam and teknor aim to win but i think for for the get this. He's gonna have to do some things that he has not done all season in. It's hard for me to sort of just be like okay. This is the week that suddenly happen. You know in some ways. This will be the least likely week that would happen. Because it's brent venables right so I expect it will be a very good game Similar to clemson in twenty fifteen or the to georgia games But i i. It's hard for me to pick notre dame when you look at the roster's the staff the history of winning these kinds a moment in these moments so a something you know both teams score in the twenty s. You're there. You're blue tv in the fourth quarter. I'm fortunate i'll be there in the press box but it's going to be a great game But it's more likely than that's gonna be a great game that comes in ultimately wins. Sure we'll see though. I mean this is probably the closest you know a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't after the louisville result from notre dame. I thought oh maybe this'll be a joke of a game but now things have really got an interesting so we wash for sure so hey thanks for coming on anna for our listeners out there be sure to check out piecework at the at the athletic. Last week was a little against the script. But here we are. They're both undefeated. And yeah it's going to be a great game so you mentioned the stadium what the atmosphere going to be like. What's it like in south ben. How's it been so far this year. It's been okay. I think in some ways you can. You can sense sort of flow of different opponents It's really students faculty and staff only. There's no outside fans watching the clemson game against boston. College i feel like clubs has way to get a lot more people in there than what notre dame has the crowds have been sort of the around ten thousand Against florida state Against duke in the opener. I thought there was decent atmosphere in there against louisville when it was windy in kind of a little cold there wasn't But i expected to feel count. Allow like if you're watching on tv it won't be one of those games where you're wondering like do they pipe in noise or not. They haven't done that and it won't feel awkward quiet either. I i feel like it. There will be some big game atmosphere on saturday. Even if it's not you know the typical eighty thousand kind of thing. Yeah i expect more fans come out for clemson than say louisville or something like that. I would think the weather's supposed to be nice to on saturday. The one time people in the mid west or like nice weather why. Why did this happen. Open for twenty seven degrees and flurries to add to the southern team. Come into the mid upper midwest. Yeah yeah well. I actually grew up. We didn't talk about this. I grew up in indiana in indianapolis actually not too far away from the south. Bend there a few hours but yet it's kind of unusual you would get a day in the upper sixties in november for sure so clemson should be thanking their lucky stars for that. So you've been covering notre dame for a real long time. Is this like the biggest game that you've covered or were you here for like the the bush push and things like that i did cover the bush game I would say that one was bigger. Because i mean in some ways because like the world we're living in everyone could sort of be there but that you know that the star power of that team You know even if liner was even if lawrence's playing at the lawrence each yen like those are great hall of fame. Todd football players like i don't want to take anything away for those guys but liner bush the rivalry with usc. Sort or the la no-name had been getting really beaten down by you. See the previous four three or three seasons so like that element was part of it that a pep rally in the stadium the night before the game was half filled had thirty five thousand people at a pep rally that that felt like it was not just the center of the college football universe but the center of like the sports universe this one. I don't want to say only but like it only feels like the center of the college football universe which is still also. Don't get me wrong but this is a clear number two. I think that everyone covers. Notre dame would tell you. This is the biggest game since the bush game and if north winds it would be the biggest wins since nineteen ninety-three game against florida state. So that's pretty big pretty big stakes when you look at a little bit more. Historically i think you i heard you on the on the podcast. Say something along lines. Correct me if. I'm wrong. But that if trevor lawrence had been playing the navy this would be right up there with one of the you know. The big games never be played at notre dame stadium. Now that he's gone. It's just simply. It could be the biggest win and brian. Kelly's tenure right. Yeah the seasons is still pretty. Good right yeah. I do think it'd be one of those games lawrence's playing in game had one it would be. You know. maybe it would be right there with like eight. Miami and ninety three florida state or the green jersey game against usc from the seventies or the game of the century is michigan state and sixty six. It's like that you know the gloss comes off a little bit without lawrence. But it's still just a you know it. It's the biggest game. Brian kelly tenure If they win it and it's got a chance to really sort. I think re reshape a little bit of the national perception of notre dame That'd be a pretty powerful thing as well. Yeah so. I wanted to ask you about that. In recent years there have been the stigma around notre dame that maybe they couldn't win the big one or compete with the premier programs in college football right now so what is different about this team as opposed to like in two thousand eighteen when they lost the clemson in the college football playoff good question. I can't sit here and tell you what is different like why that wouldn't happen again. I i would say that. There's alabama game at twenty twelve or they got played off the field. The clemson game was close for minute. Billy love gets her clemson. Just completely exposes notre dame in the secondary gets blown out. also there was the Twenty team which was a great game. the to georgia games both great games The florida state game with jameis winston in two thousand fourteen. Great game Notre dame has lost a final possession in these kinds of games way more than they get blown out. I think they get unfairly. Digging for the blowouts and don't get me wrong. Those were bad. But i think the real criticism for notre dame is less about. Why can't you compete with these teams more as much as why can't you get over the line against these teams. Not every time like notre dame doesn't have as much rahmatullah comes in ohio state alabama. But they they need to have a breakthrough where they win. One of these games once and so. I think that's to me. It's less about how you look the blowouts from the perception of notre dame more about finding the way on. Lock these kinds of games where you play a team with more talent than you more. Coaching ability than you But you got away. How to win it notre dame just. They.

"Let's start today's show remembering the impact of the fire. That damaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris one year ago with thirteen million visitors a year. The medieval masterpiece had attracting more visitors than Saint Peter's Basilica Elaine Sciolino correspondent in Paris since two thousand and two and she describes how the river that surrounds Notre Dom came to the rescue in her book. The Sam the river that made Paris Elaine. Thanks for joining us. Where were you and I know how much you love Paris? What was it like when you heard about the fire at the Notre Dame on April fifteen twenty nineteen? I live in Paris Rick and I happened to have been in New York at the time and I was in an office building and suddenly looked at a TV screen and there was CNN with the Notre. Dom Inflames I mean my city by cathedral and I was so my first questions were did anyone die and was it terrorism and once it was just established that it was a terrible accident and no one died. I was relieved because I was confident. Even at that very moment that it would be rebuilt. Maybe different but it would survive. It had to yeah now you were probably celebrating the fact that you've got this wonderful book. The send the river that made Paris just coming out in actuality in a Lotta ways. It was the send that enabled the firefighters to save the Cathedral. Well I got a phone call from my husband who was watching all of this on French TV in Paris and he said Lane. You're not gonNA believe this but I'm watching television and there is a boat that seems to be pumping water up to the firefighters on the land into the Cathedral. And I knew at that moment I had to write another chapter about the Senate and its role in helping to put out the fire at Notre Dumb. Thank God they had access to all that water when you think of the structure of a Gothic Cathedral. A lot of people don't realize it but there's huge oak beams there's a whole structure between the ceiling and the roof and it's the network of Oak Beams. The roof would be a lead covered roof. Eight hundred years old. I've seen in museums gargoyles with molten lead spewing out their mouth you know cooling and freezing their when you've had a fire like this. I mean it's just a nightmare when I've got the cathedral bursts into flames. I agree one hundred percent with you. It was an absolute nightmare and it affected people in very strange ways being people who had no real religious connection with Notre Dom we're weeping in the streets and people around the world were mourning the fact that this edifice that too many represents the heart and soul of Paris was on the verge of destruction. No I understand that the nineteenth century spire which in your chapter you you say has five hundred tons of Oak. Two hundred and fifty tons of lead fell three hundred feet crashing to the ground. It's amazing that the entire church didn't collapse A lot of people don't realize that stone gets compromised in heat and giant stone. Buildings can fall down because of a fire with the firefighters who belonged to the French military. They're not part of the city of Paris Force went into action as if it was a military operation and the commander of the firefighters sent some of his team into the burning north tower risking their lives to try to cool down that tower. Which we still don't know one year later. Is it completely intact or does it need to be supported in some way? Now that must have been quite a dramatic decision because you can stand back and make sure nobody is endangers way and then the tower would have collapsed or you can send your firefighters in risking a situation like on nine eleven when the trade towers collapsed and all the firefighters inside would perish again. Thank goodness five. Hundred firefighters participated. They took the bold move they rushed in. They called the church and they say the north tower will general galet. Who is the commander of the firefighters spent time in Afghanistan and he had studied also the nine eleven tragedy in the United States? But he had to go to the president of France to get permission to send his firefighters in. Anybody told the president is if we don't do this. We're half an hour away from Notre Dom collapsing. That is amazing. You know we can more in the church. We can love the church but as hard get into the heart in the mind of Parisians. What does it mean to Paris? I mean it just seems like of course. You've got the zero point in front right. Everything is majored in France from the Notre Dame. Its place where they're kings have been coronated through the centuries in so many ways it's the cultural heart of the city even back before the advent of Christianity there was a temple. Can You Peter Right there? Can you talk a little bit about the Notre Dame as that heart and soul of the Great City of Paris? Notre Dame is on the field unless he tae which was where Paris was created. It's the very origin of Paris. Need sits there as not only a beautiful historical monument to museum but it sits there as the absolute essence of Paris So for French Catholics. It's a place of worship but for the rest of the French nation. It's really the origin of their capital city.

"Codified very well rehearsed procedures for rebuilding monuments. And it also has a long history of having public debates about those monuments. I expected those traditions will be conjoined again that it will not necessarily be reclaimed by all French citizens today. Lucia ally is an associate professor of architecture. Princeton also the author of designs of destruction really good to speak with you. Thank you. Thanks for. Having me Notre Dame has of course, impacted people way beyond France. Like, you our listeners why? Well, you told us the artwork your family stories and just as centuries the cathedral has been standing how they built it is just you know, it's odds firing. They didn't have the tools we have so. How how did they do that? My name is Maryland coattail Miller when you go inside any great cathedral, but Notre dumb, you know, the most famous of all there's a sense of off. You look up and see that amazing ceiling and all the artwork. And it's it's very quiet. My grandfather grandfather died in nine hundred eighty three before any of us were born. I'm grace Himes. And I'm in Portland, Oregon. We finally able to go to Paris to kind of connect with him in this spot. We know he'd saddened because this photo was like a big deal. I my grandmother's house it was like on prominent display. We had grown up with it. We're really proud that. Our grandfather was in World War Two. And I think this kind of you know, represents what he was fighting for beauty and art and culture, I'm su- Reynolds. My mother traveled to Paris decades ago. It's just one of those things that you remember as a child something so famous as the Notre Dame cathedral knowing that she went in there and let that candle and then decades later I was following in her footsteps to do the same was especially meaningful to me. So you difficult to say. Say why everyone grieves it? I, you know, I always thought it would stand whenever I visit a place like if I visited kosh Mahal or or or the Notre Tom I think it's gonna you know, it's been there for so long. I think it'll be there for the rest of time. The first time I went in the eighties. I think visiting Paris triggered my interest in architecture in general, and to know that that is sitting there in partial ruins now, it just makes you sad. I saw the film's last night on the news of people standing outside singing him. And I thought I rule shy. Was there? Thank you. Great. Sue and Maryland for sharing your stories and your photos, take a look at Grace's photos of herself. And her grandfather taken decades apart in front of Notre Dom that's at the world dot ORG..

Down you noted on her read trivia, presidential and name that tune and Charles what do you wanna go with Notre Dame? Notre Dom trivia. Yes. Right. Trivia in Victor Hugo's story of The Hunchback of Notre Dom. What was the name of The Hunchback Quasimodo? You got it nailed it causes Emoto. That's for sure. What is he went for that one? He got a pair of tickets to last for the troops presents funniest night in America, June twenty ninth at the stress center, and what is the phrase that pays Charles? All day. There you go Quasimodo says like one of those new phones that just came out have just meant onto it. You know? Motivators? Yeah. The we're The Hunchback of Notre Dame. But it's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Oh, man. Anyway, that was quick. No, I probably wouldn't have I know Quasimodo right away though. I haven't seen that seen it. But you know. "But I am kind of sewer deliciousness of adult beverages. No, you're right. You're right. You're right. So I was you know, I'm always going through looking at things checking things out looking at attendance of stadiums. Average attendance for okay again. Michigan was number one. Wasn't a surprise. But the big kit is well represented in in this. Let's is too. But the big ten is well represented in that in that in that area, the top three many Michigan over one hundred ten thousand. Yep. And of course, just like. Grab a teen says that during the game thank you fans for showing up the exactly strong. Then you got Penn State over beaver stadium hundred five thousand. And then Ohio State over one hundred to one. And then you go down the list in Nebraska wraps up the top ten at eighty nine grand, exactly. Like, you said SEC comes through as well to the Bama one hundred one LSU, oh, just over one hundred thou- AM ninety nine Tennessee and Georgia. I mean, they're the only oddball this one Texas ninety seven thousand but again. These are these are big time house. Would be higher. I would have thought so too makes you wonder stadiums. Not that big. That's what I'm thinking. I think it's just that loud. But they don't have the capacity. Right. But I mean, it does it does shock that that Oklahoma is an on that top ten list. It is a little perplexing. It does make you wonder if they expanded it out where Oklahoma would would fall into, you know, would they be number eleven or number twenty. You're right. I figured that. They're in the top top fifteen. Being the top top fifteen. But it's just it's interesting information that I like to throw out there find out different things like that. And you know, it's always good to see Michigan being number one in the attendance. And everything that we've spent when you're when you're in a list of top ten of anything. That's great to see her you notice how we stick that. Oh, yeah. I'm always doing things trying to figure things out make sure we're identified somewhere along the line. But as far as that list goes nothing nothing really surprises me mean Tennessee's on that list. And of course, I mean, Tennessee, even though the record may not show it there, a well you well renown football school. So it doesn't surprise me there in that top ten I think the other one that kind of surprised me they're not on that list. Notre dame. Notre Dame stadium. How how would the capacity is at Notre Dame? I think it's grown to maybe sixty. But it hasn't really. No. It's not a big. It's not a very big state. Okay. Okay. It's always been quote, unquote, half the size of Michigan. Oh, always think of it in that that scenario, it's always the half the size. So and Notre Dame fans hate this. But they can't wouldn't Notre Dame. Their state McCain and looked at Michigan the way Michigan built their stadium. Okay. And then it was like a replica. This is when everybody was friend friendly and everything like that. Now, they don't like to say that it's a replica of Michigan stadium and different things. Like that makes sense. That makes sense. I mean, if I were our Notre Dame and found out that people said that your your stadiums a replica of one of your biggest rivals. I'd be a little ticked off myself too. I guess I look I won't be friendly. You know, all I'm saying is. It's just something else. He just look at different things, and it just. You don't wanna you don't want to confess that it is. But when people ask why is it Notre Dame there? There's the reason true makes sense. So I mean, I'm not trying to dog come out. They just didn't build their stadium. Huge Notre Dame as a small private school. Really? If you think about it. They are you're right. You're right. So with that being said, it's not like they they they're reaching out. Or, you know, maybe they should involve the community a little bit more different things like that. So it's just it's just there. But I wanna get into. What are we going to get into? Now is a good question. When are we going to get into, Jamie? Hey, you know, me, I always got things above Lynn, you know. Oh, yeah. Mm always talking about different things. So hold on a second. I'll get you. Okay. Well, why are you looking our remind the people that were at four thirteen each year on street the grand opening of the new seven eleven. What what what facility is this again, the Balaji boundary love? Yeah. So that's where we're at. And we've got. They got free stuff here. Sign up to get yourself some free stuff as well. They got gift baskets. They've got you know, the for free. They've got the beer pong table. They got the nice little summer lounge chair handy. This this this the next three days ago? Yeah, totally no. I mean, I'm just saying I mean outside get you get your ten on ten. I mean, get your tan by by tan. I mean, you're you're you're win tan on plus you.
