"Leapy sports. I'm sure freedom coaches on the move in college basketball, Rick Pitino has headed back to the Big Apple, patina will leave his coaching job at iona to take over at St. John's getting his 6 year deal. Former Notre-Dame coach Mike bray, who recently resigned, takes over at South Florida. In the NBA, Philadelphia celebrated its 40th anniversary of the 1983 NBA title, but it was all Chicago Bulls in the second overtime. The bulls went at one O 9 one O 5 or the sixers. Bull centered Nikola vucevic says the team showed a lot of fight for a big win. This year, no matter what was going on, we always kept coming back and fighting back. We had light up and downs, let it tough bosses, a lot of things were we could have just kind of quit and gave up. But we keep battling, obviously, there's still a lot to play. Memphis rallied late to beat Dallas one 12 to one O 8. It was the New York Knicks getting 57 points from Julius Randle, not enough, though, has Minnesota topped the Knicks one 40 to one 34. We gave him confidence in a team like that that can really score the ball. He gave them confidence early. They're going to stick around. Utah beats Sacramento, Memphis over Dallas as the gris rallied late. Charlotte over Indiana and Golden State snapped an 11 game road losing streak in downing Houston. NHL, Florida defeated Detroit 5 to two Alexander barkov set the Florida franchise record for most career points. Dylan Ferguson had himself a game in the nets for the sins as Ottawa defeated Pittsburgh two to one Ferguson had 48 saves. It's still sinking in to be honest. My big focus tonight was just go out there and be me. Don't try to be anyone I'm not. And just stay in the moment. Colorado shout out to Chicago 5 nothing. It was Los Angeles blowing out Calgary and it was Edmonton defeating San Jose in overtime. Women's NCAA tournament another number one drops as Indiana got beat by 19 Miami. On this week's AP Religion Roundup, Paris' iconic cathedral prepares to re-open, and ancient runes reveal the Norse god Odin's deep history.

"On this week's AP religion roundup, Paris's iconic cathedral prepares to reopen, and ancient runes revealed a Norse God Odin's deep history. French officials say the reconstruction of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris is going fast enough to allow its reopening to visitors and faithful at the end of 2024. That's less than 6 years after a fire ravaged its roof. France's culture minister rima Abdul Malik says that they still have work to do after the visitors return. Reopening to the public in December 2024, it doesn't mean that all the renovation will be over. There will still be some renovation works going on in 2020 5, but the cathedral will be open to the public. Authorities have made the choice to rebuild the 12th century masterpiece of gothic architecture, the way it was before. That includes recreating a more recent 315 foot spire. The army general in charge of the colossal reconstruction said the iconic spire will gradually start reappearing above the monument this year. He also says that the reopening means that Notre-Dame's archbishop will restart services at the cathedral. Every day, about a thousand workers endeavored to restore everything from the stonework to the stained glass to bring back Notre-Dame. Scientists have identified the oldest known reference to the Norse God Odin on a gold disk unearthed in western Denmark in 2020, a pendant with the inscription reading he is Odin's man, was in one of the largest troves of gold treasure ever found in Denmark. It's one of the best executed runen descriptions led I have ever seen. Lisbeth Emer is a runologist with the national museum in Copenhagen. She says the runes are evidence that Odin was worshiped as early as the 5th century. At least 150 years earlier than previously thought. We have had some indications that he might have been in the conscience of people earlier, but this is the first solid evidence. Experts think the cash was buried 15th centuries ago to either hide it from enemies, or as a tribute to appease the gods. I'm Walter ratliff

"There's a Catholic university I just read during the break, saint Mary's university and Notre-Dame. Which has denied TPUSA a chapter on campus, turning point USA. Because they have said that there were only two sexes. So that is now considered un Catholic by a Catholic university. When I read that something as Christian Jewish or Catholic, I have no idea what it stands for anymore. Does it actually stand for Christianity Catholicism? Judaism, like the National Council of Jewish women, the only thing Jewish about them is that it's composed of Jews. But in terms of values, it might as well be the ACLU. Buckner had a banner day throwing for 210 to four yards in three scores. Paul Kengor Discusses Communist Antonio Gramsci

"I want to talk about before we get to your latest book. Will you explain why and it's the person even most educated conservatives have never heard of, which is shocking. Why is Antonio Graham street this crippled Italian communist, perhaps the most important thinker when it comes to modernizing Karl Marx's thinking? Yeah, in fact, my friend Sam Greg, who I quoted earlier calls gramsci the most influential socialist ever. And he was an Italian Marxist. So he was prior to the Frankfurt school. In fact, he wasn't part of the Frankfurt school. He was thrown in jail by Mussolini and Graham's prison notebooks are really kind of the seminal work on Marxism applied to culture. And by the way, Seb, the editor of the American of the Columbia University press published prison notebooks of gramsci, was a fellow by the name of Joseph Buttigieg. Joseph Buttigieg, who is the father of Pete and in fact, in fact Pete is acknowledged and thanked in the book by his father. Pete's father, Joe, who's a Notre-Dame. Did this at Notre-Dame was the founder of the Internet and president of the international Graham chief society. And when he died for more than a year, there was a eulogy in memoriam page on the opening URL of American socialists. So Pete Buttigieg's father is worshiped by the communists of America.

Pastor Robert Jeffress: Christmas Isn't Just for Christians

"A pastor Jeffers I was reading the beautiful op-ed you wrote for Fox News, Christmas isn't just for Christians. Why is that? You know, I had a high school student in Orlando who watches our TV program, email me and said, what should I say to my classmates who keep disparaging Christianity and talking about all the evil that's been done in the name of Christianity? And I wrote back to her and this is the basis for the op-ed. I said, you know, you ought to go ahead and mate. You have some horrible things that have been done in the name of Christ, but many more good things have been throughout history, done in the name of Christ. I mean, think about it. Great works of art like the Sistine Chapel, great works of architecture like Notre-Dame, the founding of great colleges like Harvard and Yale, the printing press, all of these things. Benevolent organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation army, all of these things were created by followers of that baby born 2000 years ago in a feeding trial. And I think that's one reason Todd. The angels said that the shepherds becoming a Christ is good news of great joy for all the people. The whole world has benefited from the coming of Christ 2000 years ago. And of course, the main reason he came was to give us what we needed most to forgiveness of sins and that gift is available to everybody, bad does Catholics, Muslims, atheists, Jews. It's not just for some people, it's a gift for all people to receive. You know,

Football Coach Chan Gailey and Doug Discuss NIL and Transfer Portal

"An interesting parallel. You know, the preseason issue with the NFL. And now you have and you brought this up, the parody issue that you're looking at a little bit in college, whether it be a Kent State in Georgia, whether it be an Appalachian state, you know, basically beating most FBS teams that it played, you have the others that Georgia, Georgia, state Jordan southern. When Nebraska, I mean, you have all these games. Has the, I'm going to make a hypothesis here. I think this is a one of the iterations of NIL and transfer portal. Yeah. I agree totally. I mean, you take Marshall Marshall had 40 something new players on their roster this year counting freshmen and transfer players. And they go to Notre-Dame and beaten out of dying. They were able to gather some people, Notre-Dame had no idea what that other team had. They'd seen one game on tight. So they have some pretty good football players that they've been able to mass and other teams have that too. You don't know what anybody has early in the season and then you figure you don't even know what you have sometimes. And you're trying to figure it out. So, and there's a lot of, you know, the motivation factor is huge in college. Motivation and because going to play Texas a and M for Appalachian state, they want to prove that they could have played a Texas a and M, those kids do. Right. So they're going to apply lights out. Texas a and M is saying, you know, we got Mississippi next week. We got to worry about, well, yeah, we got to think about them a little bit, not worry about this little Appalachian state. And they've got good football players. There's a bunch of good football players out there.

"notre" Discussed on Bet The Board

"The last word to you on this game knowing that to pain's point, you live and breathe Notre-Dame football know this program as well as anybody. Amid the two and two star for Marcus Freeman. You look at Notre-Dame's schedule coming up after this, they'll play host to Stanford and UNLV before they have a rotate against Syracuse in a home game against Clemson. How important is this game for Notre-Dame and Marcus Freeman's first season to put the loss to Marshall in the rearview mirror and to begin to believe that, hey, look, this program is making strides. There's reason to be optimistic going forward. And we still have the potential for a 9 win ceiling if things break the right way. It's incredibly important. Besides the obvious games, playoff games, national championship game against Alabama. It's an important game for Notre-Dame as a program in quite some time. I mean, a lost puts you back right into Marcus Freeman's in over his head. A wind mainly puts that Marshall. Now it looks like more of a blip than anything because they did exceed expectations against Ohio State in the opener and that would be the only one that was really head scratching performance so far this season. So I'll put it this way. I put my fan hat on and I hopefully have done a great service to Notre-Dame nation this week. Whenever I show up in person with the game being here in Las Vegas, Notre-Dame flat out stinks. I went back through the records, Notre-Dame's two and 13 against the spread the last 15 times I was in attendance. Failing to cover by 7 points per game. I had tickets to this game. This game is so important that I decided to give away my tickets. I will not be attending just because Notre-Dame typically does not perform well when I am there. I don't even know Brad if I don't even know Brad if I've been to 15 college football games in my entire life, let alone 15 games involving one particular program. So hat tip to you for that and I'm sure Notre-Dame nation will appreciate the monumental sacrifice you've made if they can emerge victorious. Come Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium. I want to encourage all of you our loyal listeners to follow Brad on Twitter app rad power 7. You can follow pain there as well at pain insider. I'm Todd fuhrman follow me on Twitter, most importantly follow the podcast the board pot. Brad, one major storyline this week in college football that I did want to get your take on pain and I briefly touched on it at the top of the show. Wisconsin parts ways with Paul Chris, and while Payne and I have been overly critical of the way that the badgers have operated offensively for years. I never got the feeling that this was a fan base that would grow so tired so quickly of a head coach that has really led this team to a level of dominance in the Big Ten west, even if they're not a playoff contender that their brand of football has at least paid dividends. Were you surprised Wisconsin acted that quickly? And what direction do you think they quite possibly decide to go in if they don't decide to name Jim Leonard the full time head coach after an interim stint to close out this year? I was surprised, even though obviously the last two plus seasons have been a struggle for Wisconsin. Not the MO of a program like that. But with that being said, I don't think all interim gigs are created equal. This is not necessarily this is a legitimate audition for Jim Leonard, who they probably wanted a name head coach kind of in waiting. If that's still a thing, like it was 5, ten years ago. But they're trying to hold off keeping them. And now he has a legitimate 7 games left on the schedule, where I could see if he goes 5 and two or better. Then he can get the job. I think he's going to struggle to get the 5 and two or better just because the Big Ten west has significantly improved. And I think when you dive deeper into it, maybe we shouldn't be so surprised. I think the general shock of Bret biela coming in there in a second year and limiting Wisconsin to two yards rushing. I think that that probably had as much to do with it than any game in the last three years for Paul Chris. The fact that Bela on the former Wisconsin coach put that one on you on your home field, I think probably sped up the process. Let's just put it there. I think I saw a note on social media and I didn't have a chance to fully verify it that Paul Chris getting fired in the wake of that loss against Illinois means he's now one career victory shy of Brett B Lama on the Wisconsin wins list. So maybe it was Brett balham his family the ponied up the $11 million settlement to try and put the final nail in the coffin there. And maintain a little bit of respect for that particular program. Did want to just get your take. Any other games or nuggets that you felt were worth sharing that we didn't have a chance to get to over the course of the show? Nope, just keep an eye on Oklahoma quarterback general booty for the upcoming week. We'll do what we can there. As always, Brad, can't thank you enough for your time and generous contributions to the show, breaking games down to play devil's advocate to paint it and keep him honest with everything going on there. So best of luck this weekend, my friend and I'll look forward to having you right back here, same time, same place next week. I'm honestly disappointed pain, you know, Brad starts that talking about his dating life and we didn't really take shots there one way or another. But I figured with all your cache, your connections to Hollywood, the hobnobbing you do down there at 2 a.m. in South Florida that you could have made Brad going out with Kim Kardashian a reality and it doesn't feel like we're anything closer. He's already moved on that he wants to date gisele instead once that divorce goes official. That was crazy. I mean, he was trying to upgrade in classiness. That is for sure there aren't videos of gisele all over the Internet. So I could understand that. Brad's Notre-Dame fan and so it's holy war week with BYU. You don't necessarily want to entangle yourself with the likes of Kim Kardashian on this kind of week. I can fully understand. Either way, a hat tip to Brad. I mean, he's looked at the data. He studied the numbers. He knows Notre-Dame doesn't win when he's in the house and he's willing to take one for the team. That's why we love him and Brad will have a much bigger workload next Wednesday to highlight some of the marquee college football matchups. Before we get into all of that though, there is still one final order of business to attempt to transact. And it's identifying where we see the best investment to make for college football week 6. This is going to be short and sweet. I'm going to give you a little bit of our reasoning and then Todd, you can break it down for the folks. But we're going to go with rotation number three 7 four UL Monroe plus the 14 our number makes this 13 and a half on a neutral. Obviously Monroe's home. It's homecoming weekend. You're looking at some things that are showing signs that coastal Carolina isn't overly buttoned up as well as they've been in past iterations. You own Monroe is certainly ticking up a little bit. So you have kind of two ships in the night passing in terms of our power numbers. So I think there's value just in the number and Todd, I think you have a little bit more to divulge here on the game. Yeah, I think when you look at this Monroe team, obviously you have to parse out some of the data points. So far this season through 5 games, two of them have come against teams that I have inside my top ten in Alabama and Texas. So you kind of want to eliminate those from the equation. You look at how they performed in class against an in state rival at home against Louisiana Lafayette. When the game outright 21 17 as a 9 and a half point underdog, and what was most impressive there is that Louisiana Monroe was able to sell out and stop the run. It's something that I thought was a little bit of an anomaly, but they followed it up last weekend, even in a 45, 28 loss where they did not cover against Arkansas state, that they were able to stop the run again. It's back to back games where they've held their opponent to less than two and a half yards per carry.

"Need to ask my wife and we just moved, and he was like, no, apologize to Joanna, who's my wife, and tell I'm sorry to try to do this to you guys and make you move again and so from that point I had to go into the recruit's home and all these things are going through my head as I'm sitting here with this group. Like, what is going on right now? And then by that time, as I'm driving home, you know, my phone starts to ring. You know, from I talk to people from the AD to our players to people that are involved with the hiring and it's just, you know, the 80s and first things, are you interested in being the next head coach here? And I said, absolutely, who's not? You know? And that was just an initial conversation and it just started happening and you saw the people were calling it you had to talk to you had to do the interviews and the last thing was obviously to interview with the president father Jenkins and he was over in Rome and it was just all a blur. It was. It was just no sleep. You can't sleep. You're just on a adrenaline rush and, you know, I'll never forget when Jack sorber called me and said, I found my next head coach and it was a moment I'll never forget. But man, it's now look at it, you know? And now look at you. And you're the head coach Notre-Dame. And how cool is that, man? And what an opportunity is to serve these guys into help these guys reach their goals. And I won't take it for granted. So Marcus, hey, we can hear the passion for the players, especially and for the people coming through. I'm curious as to the football side is one thing, but the Notre-Dame job I've always heard is different because there is so much additional on your plate. You have all these guys who have chosen to be with you. They could have gone, Tommy Reese. You know, Mike Nelson, a bunch of other guys, could have left Lance could have left. They wanted to stay and be part of that program with you. Who else do you lean on maybe who is not on your staff? Maybe not necessarily your family, who is like, okay, these are people it's like, until you're the head coach, you probably don't know what you don't know, right? So who are the people who kind of started? Because even as gym trouser was obviously a wildly successful head coach in FCS and then Ohio State, but even as big as Ohio State was, it's probably not the same thing as being a head coach at Notre-Dame. So who are the guys who have been good resources and you think will be good resources for you to kind of help you on this journey? Yeah, you know a lot of people have reached out. A lot of people are willing to help. But you got to be careful who the advice you seek and for me it's the two people that are closest to me is obviously Luke fickle being one and he's extremely busy right now with getting ready for Alabama in the playoffs. And so, you know, I've talked to coach pick a few times, but really the other guy is Jim trusts in, you know, it's funny because Koch stress has been in the same my entire life that I've known him in that he always has this great answer, but never gives you an answer. Coach, what do you do here? I remember the first day they asked me, hey, what do you want to do about media? How do you want to open up the media? And I'm like, what? These are things I've never thought about. How do you control the media coming to practice? So what I call coast press HRS, how did you decide when you let the media in? What are you doing with the media? And he gave me this elaborate answer and it ended up being no answer. It ended up being trust your instincts. That's what it was like covering him all those years. We always joked that he'll tell you all the different ways to screw a lightbulb in, but we'll never just give you a lightbulb, right? And so he was the same way. But you know what? His greatest advice is lean on your captain's lean on no seniors because this is their program. And that's what I've done, man. I lean on these captains. And the guys that have bled for Notre-Dame and because you said it early, they talked about Tommy and Lance and Coachella and all these guys assigned to come back and it happens for me, I believe that it happens to be about Notre-Dame more than it does Marcus Freeman. And I'm glad these guys want to work with me and trust me, but Notre-Dame is special. Notre-Dame, the community Notre-Dame, the university, is a place that you want to be affiliated with affiliated with and you don't know what may be until you get here. This is a place that will change your life if you truly commit to it. And it's exciting the future of this place. It's exciting for me to be the leader here, but it's also exciting man to see where this place is going to take us all. So sell us on why, as you know that if there's a knock still on nerd aim, I mean, these guys have won a lot of games. They've been to the playoff. But then when they face Alabama or when they face Clemson in the playoff, you know, it's not close. But you guys clearly feel you're going to win a national championship. So for the public that says, oh, we don't think it's ever going to happen. Why is that possible at our name? Well, I don't think it's going to happen this year. And we don't deserve it this year, right? And you had an opportunity to be 12 and you lost one unbelievable sentence and that he team and we finished 5th in the country in the regular season and that's where we deserve to be. And but I think it's a process to getting to that point. And I believe that you can do it here. I believe that with the right talent with continuing to enhance the culture. And as I tell these guys, it's a culture right now that we're 11 and one. We've been a playoff sort of past three years, but it's really little things that we can show them and that we can do that are very intentional that I think that will take us to that point where we can you know what we can break through. We can beat the Alabama's or beat the climates or beat the teams that right now are at the mountaintop. And so it's going to be a process and it's going to be very intentional. It's going to be trial and error, right? And it's not, I wish I just said this is the formula we're going to do it and we're going to be national championships in a year two years. But no, it's going to be about working hard. It's going to be about getting that talent to get the best players in the country. It takes work. It doesn't take a BS sales pitch. It takes work hard work. And we as a staff happen to understand it, we have to work. And we have to develop these relationships. We have to convince these kids that have so many different options that you know what Notre-Dame is the best place for you. And that takes a lot of work and I think our staff is up for the challenge. You know, I know I'm up for the challenge and I want to lead this charge at getting those best players in the country, but also understanding that with the guys we have now with the guys we're bringing in, it's continuing to develop that team that environment, that culture that's going to get us to the top. Hey, Marcus, we know you got to run. I got one last question for you, though. You coached against Cincinnati to help develop those players. I mean, I talked to bunch NFL scouts who think there's a bunch of real dudes there, not just cornerbacks, not receiver here at edge rushers. Make the case why this team you would not shock you that they could win a national title win at all based on the talent that they have. Well, I think a lot of people, when you get ready to play in Alabama, you haven't mentality of oh shoot, man. We're gonna be outmatched before we even walk on the field. The one thing about Cincinnati's football team is that they will believe that they can compete with anybody in the country. And that's what they'll do when they play out of them..

"And so that was like the flip side of it. But, you know, this is I've got northwestern friends who when Gary Barnett left for Colorado, they never forgave him, and it's like, guys, he took them to the rose bowl like the greatest season in school history is you owe it to him and it's like, ah, he left in the middle of the night, sent an email, blah, blah, blah. People just, you know, and I get it. I don't want to be sound like I'm being snarky about this. It's our school. I understand. I love your school. And I think people feel to betrayed because they think the coach should have that same level of loyalty. That you do as a fan. But they don't. It's a job to them. Who has more disdain, some of your friends do for Gary Barnett leaving or you do for the call for staying. They've got bigger problems than Mick McCall now. They may have two coordinators they need to replace. Let's not go down that road. So look, we spent 45 minutes just talking about two coaching changes, but I think they are that we go years covering the sport and not have two coaching changes as dramatic as those. And this carousel is not done spinning by any means. As of this recording, we still have openings at Virginia tech. At obviously Notre-Dame. At Oklahoma at Oklahoma. I mean, think about all the, if you go back to last year, right? You're going to have new coaches in a two year span at Notre-Dame, Oklahoma, USC, LSU, Texas change coaches last year. Florida change coaches. Mort is changing coaches. Washington has changed coaches. Who's that Washington has changed coaches? I don't really put them in the same levels, those others, but yes. Just the amount of blue Bloods they're turning over coaches. Coaches. Tennessee change coaches, I don't know if you consider them if you put them in the Washington category, but that's those are all sizable sizable entities. As always, you can send your emails to the auto pod at Gmail dot com. We're still coming back with our emails episode later this week. We're burning the midnight oil for you guys to give you extra.

"To, and he did it. And, you know, I think there's been some honorable way that are now no longer rules. On this very podcast, I want to say last week right before Thanksgiving, we did a kind of a setting up the coaching carousel, and we talked about Luke fickle, and we both agreed well, if his team makes the playoff, he's not gonna be able to go anywhere. He's off limits. Well, Brian Kelly just said that's not a rule. You know? I think what's a little different to me stew is Luke circles in the top four or top 5 and maybe I think if Notre-Dame was one spot higher. And we don't know where they're going to come out tomorrow. What are they going to be? They may be 5th, right? Because Ohio still won't, yeah. If they were fourth, would it be that much more egregious? Oh, if they were like, we control our destiny. We're going to the playoff and he's still left. Maybe Brian Kelly just doesn't think they're gonna make it. I don't know. But let me ask you this. Go ahead. So Georgia beats Alabama, hardly far fetched at this point. Then Alabama's out of the top four. It doesn't necessarily mean they'd stay at that they'd fall behind Notre-Dame doesn't automatically mean. Remember, node doesn't have a chance to play its way in this weekend. So they just really need to that you don't have Oklahoma wears Oklahoma state for in this case. I think we're gonna find out Tuesday night as Oklahoma Oklahoma state would pass Notre-Dame for sure if they win this week and win the big 12. But will they be ahead of them in the poll that comes out Tuesday? I don't know. So what we see like thinking is they need Georgia to win, which is probably need them to win probably need. I don't know about that, but maybe. But they need Georgia to win, and they need one of these two things to happen. Michigan to lose to Iowa or Baylor to beat or Houston to beat Cincinnati. Yeah, or Houston movies, yes, thank you. Any one of those things happens, they are they could be in. And so playing this out. So I mean, we all think that Notre-Dame might turn to might want Luke fickle as the coach now, right? We know Luke fickle. That's a job that we think he would want. And how can you lead my next question? If Notre-Dame, the fickle is their guy. And let's say they wait till after this, they at least wait till after this weekend. And he makes the playoff and no name says, hey, Luke fickle, here we're willing to offer you here's your ten year a $100 million contract to come to our aim. The catch is you can't stay for the we need you now. It's early signing day. You can't stay at since any for another month. As all this is solely because of the early signing. Yeah. Well, I think one thing I would say is, you know, we said, I don't know how you put the Genie back in the bottle. They may have to scrap early signing day at this point. It was well intentioned. There was a good reason to do it, which was, you know, these coaches were spending December and January. Criss-cross to visit their committed recruits to make sure they didn't flip. So just let them sign. That was the reasoning for it. But look at the effect it's having on the coaching world. Or they push it back into after the playoff. Push it, well that goes back to having your basically your one designing day. But that's what's driving all this. I mean, this is all back in the day. Do you remember when Charlie Weiss got the Notre-Dame job and stayed with the Patriots through the Super Bowl? He was introduced as no James head coach in probably December, I want to say, or maybe early January after they fired Tyrone willingham. And then he went back and was with the Patriots for the next month. I remember actually he held he held his signing day press conference from the Super Bowl. So think about that and now think about where we are now where it's not only can you not do that, you have to quit on your team before the season's over because we need you signing days in two weeks and we need you know, Lincoln Riley was an introduced at a press conference Monday. Was that a recruit's home Monday night? Two nights ago, he was coaching in the for the big 12 title game. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. Just feel like we're an uncharted waters. Well, so what is your read on what we're aim goes next? I would guess it's one of three people. I guess it's Matt Campbell, Luke fickle or there's a chance they could promote from within with Marcus Freeman. I think they question is going to be. This will be an interesting little audition for Marcus Freeman because and look, this is a possibility they could name Brian polling in the interim because he's actually had head coaching experience. But let's say I think it's really those are the three main candidates. And what's ironic, I think ironic is maybe not the best way to put it. But the way things played out, Matt Campbell, I think had a real good shot to be the USC head coach. Lincoln Riley ends up jumping on their chance, Matt Campbell's stuff gets canceled. Then you get the second curve ball of two big curveballs. You know, going from Riley and then Brian Kelly leaving, Matt Campbell sitting out there were timing might behoove him, where he's gonna be coaching on to Lincoln Riley for the job that he, you know, didn't get. And from the timing aspect, I don't know how Luke fickle unless they lose. I don't know how he could he could bail out of that. If I'm Notre-Dame, I feel like they have basically four choices. That are apparent. Those three coaches and one of them is like wait. I mean, you just wait till the playoff and that means you're going for Luke fickle. So it's really to me it's Campbell. Free men wait, and if it's weight, that means you're probably going after going after him, not unless you're a Notre-Dame and you think you're gonna. What about, do you think it's crazy? What are you talking about this, but you know, it's not unusual for a school to hire somebody's coordinator and he comes and he holds the earth thinking that I don't press conference and he goes. You're thinking that Notre-Dame if they make the playoff is gonna hire interim head coach Edo Georgia to come back totally. No, I'm saying, would it be kosher for Notre-Dame to the playoff rankings get unveiled? Cincinnati undefeated synthase going to the playoff. No dame's going to the Fiesta bull or whatever. And then two days later, another day announces that Luke fickle is going to be their next head coach, but he's staying with the bear cats through the playoff. No, because here's the problem with that. I think you can have him, you can announce him. I think the issue is you're leaving us. Yeah, but what I'm saying is, that happens with coordinators all the time, you know? Kirby smart coordinator. I'm forgetting some obvious ones off the top of my head. That happens, you know, I can remember actually lane kiffin. This yelling kip and although he screwed that up, I can actually remember going all the way back to when Dan Mullen was urban Meyer's OC and got the Mississippi state job. I remember at the media day before the national title game him showing off to us how he had two cell phones now. His Florida phone is Mississippi state phone. You wouldn't be able to do that with.

"Don't know for sure. Like you said, it's not an unrealistic scenario. I mean, I don't think Alabama's gonna get it in as a two lost team at this point. So all you need is bailer to beat Oklahoma state or Cincinnati loses to Houston or Michigan loses to Iowa. Any of those three? No names in the playoff probably with an interim coach. That's insane. Could you imagine if Notre-Dame, which has gotten blown out on big stages close to the playoff? And somehow they get in and they leave and win one game in the playoff much less win two. That might be, you know, it's weird and I don't know if Notre-Dame typically as a school that obviously has a huge fan base, but also has a lot of people just are inclined to root against them. I suspect there'd be a lot of people rooting for Notre-Dame because they're wrong. Because, well, I don't know, just because I think, you know, this is, you know, this is the players really get jerked around here more than anything else. You know? And so I think there's going to be a lot of people who probably will be rooting for them. This may be a mood point. They may not get into the playoff anyway. But I just think the aspect of like, I remember thinking that this came up actually today at the USC. It didn't come out the press conference, but it came up with a conversation I had to somebody where, you know, that bedlam game was really close and back and forth. If Lincoln Riley's team, Oklahoma, it won. Lincoln Riley's probably not the head coach at USC, or he's definitely not the head coach right now. Matt Campbell might be the head coach at UFC right now. So it's kind of crazy how it plays this plays out like this, but man, Notre-Dame and Brian Kelly, it's just like, and then, you know, like I think our colleagues both Pete Sampson and Matt fortuna had the text message that Brian Kelly basically sent them and at one point I got a text from a head coach I know who basically was like, did he really break up with them over text? And I wrote back, you know, I kind of included the tweet from, I think it was fortuna. And he was like, man, this is smacks of Todd Graham. And I was like, those are four words, no coach ever wants to be associated. We did that coaching carousel series a couple months ago. We could have done a whole one just on messy exits. "So Dave Wilson, I have summoned you here today because I want to talk to you about a college football icon. Really, but the icon is not a player, it's not a coach. It's not a stadium. It's not even like a game or anything. It's a sign. So tell me about this sign. Where is it? What is this thing even look like? It's in the hallway, leading from the locker room down to the field at Notre-Dame stadium. It's a gold sign. It was hand painted with blue lettering, about three feet high, four feet wide. And it's this play like a champion today. Yeah, I mean, this is a sign that is not just a thing you sort of look at and venerate if the thing you physically interact with. Yeah, it's a tradition that Notre-Dame for players to hit the sign on their way down the field. It's you've seen it all over the place. They play it before games. I mean, this thing is in movies, right? I mean, it's on television on these NBC broadcasts of Notre-Dame games, but it's also like in cinema also. Yeah, in Rudy, the famously the players on their way to the field are all fired up and go hit the sign. It's just becomes synonymous with Notre-Dame. As the name players now leave their renovated locker room. With their individual gesture on the two sides on the way down the steps as they get set to come out of the north tunnel. Yeah, I mean, this is where I admit Dave that I visited Notre-Dame once. I brought back a pint glass with play like a champion today emblazoned on it in the blue lettering that you were describing. I was watching Ted Lasso and they have a sign that says believe that they slap above their doorway and it's in blue lettering with the yellow background, perhaps not coincidentally. So this thing, which is a famous piece of sports history that's meaningful to generations of players and people at this point. Why did you want to dig into this? Why dig deeper into the story of the play like a champion today sign? I just happened to be in Oklahoma covering the Oklahoma Nebraska game. And that was a Saturday. Just two days previously Notre-Dame had announced a licensing deal with a company for a play like a champion today. And everyone in Oklahoma seemed to really up in arms about it. And so I was really curious why that was. Dave, the story that you've reported here is a real rabbit hole. A mind-blowing one for me 'cause I knew nothing of the alternate hidden history of the sign, but I want to just start here and explain for people how this started at Notre-Dame because in your piece you talked to a player on the team there who arrived in 1989. And this is Rick Meyer, who is a star quarterback was the future number two overall pick in the draft and the NFL. What did he tell you about Notre-Dame football and the religion of it, really? Well, I mean, obviously, he grew up in Indiana, he grew up a big part of this, and he said when he got to know today, he didn't realize the sign hadn't been there already for 50 years. He thought. And he just said, the locker room was psyched, the stairwell was sacred. The tunnel sacred, and that sign was a big part of that. The fact that he thought that the sign was there forever as I did. Also, incidentally, that's not the case. It turns out what did you learn about when the sign was actually put up there? So I talked to Lou holt, who is the coach who got hired in 1985, and he said that over the fall break that year, there were no there was nothing to do. There's no recruiting going on. So he went to the library and just checked out as many noted aim history books as he could find. Amanda motel, which I stay in until my family moved down, and I go through the book and somewhere there's a picture in a book, the entrance way into the stadium down the step and there's a sign play like a champion today. So I started asking around what happened to a sign hooper? Nobody could tell me nobody knew anything about it. And so I said, okay, I'll tell you what. We're going to get this made up. And so he sent an assistant coach to the sign shop on campus and asked them to make one up and it was up for the 1986 season. I mean, this is a scene out of a movie, Dave, Lou holtz like blowing dust off of ancient books in the university library, trying to restore the glory of this program. And I don't want to like credit the sign too much here, I suppose, but Notre-Dame did start winning championships at this point again, right? I mean, it was 1988 when they win a title with Lou holds the team becomes a media darling to put it lightly. I mean, I think of Notre-Dame football now and I still think of touchdown Jesus, the weights on the gold helmets and this sign from 1986. Right. In 1988, they win that national title still actually their last national title. And then 1991, they become the first program to get their own TV deal when NBC gave them that giant one team deal. This sunny and cold Saturday in the South Bend Indiana is a mild stone day, the 300th game in historic. Yeah, I mean that deal day for people aren't familiar with it. Just describe how unique that is, how Notre-Dame has used that to market itself to the planet basically. It's funny because people don't realize now that all these games were on TV, there were two or three games a week. Notre-Dame got a deal where they were they had their own time and place every week on a national network. And that was just unheard of. And NBC, I mean, they were in subtle about them showcasing the sign, right? They were not. They put what's called a lipstick camera, one of the little mounted cameras in the hallway there. And it showed every week they show the players coming down those steps and hitting that sign. Down the steps of the locker room into the tunnel. For the final time this year here comes the Irish. John heisler, who worked at Notre-Dame for 40 years and wrote several wrote ten books, I believe about the Irish said that when people would come to town, that was the first thing they asked him is when could they go see the sign? It was more popular than going to a football game. Heissler told me there were probably he counted more than 40 products in the bookstore featuring the sign. It just became sort of like a synonymous withholds and Notre-Dame in that era. And it just took off. So the person who made the sign for Lou holtz. I mean, this is a real person. Is this in a movie character? Who is she? Her name is Laurie wenger. She worked on campus painting signs, and it was just, you know, she said it was just part of her daily job, someone an assistant coach came over with instructions from holtz on what he wanted and Lou said he was very specific about what he wanted play like on one line, a champion on one line. And today, on the last line, and she painted it to his specifications. You report that all of these fans and former players would then also commission Laurie directly to make them their own version of the sign? Right, so she gets an order. She gets a request to paint the sign. She makes one and her husband delivers it. And it turns out it's Rudy, who had ordered it. So this is the real Rudy. This is Rudy rudiger in real life who is doing it. Where is he putting this thing? What's he doing with it? He's, you know, as our friend Ryan McGee wrote last year about Rudy, he's got basically a whole nother day museum in his house. So he just wanted one more one more piece of memorabilia up there..

"Of is what it is. The one thing that marcus freeman has done exceptionally well. This season is that by week could be negated a little bit. Because what are you scheming for. If you're cincinnati. What is what is. The schematic thing that you've seen on tape like. Oh i'm going to attack that. We can do one thing to kind of emphasize our attack on that specific area of stevens freeman really hasn't ran the same defense. In any of these games. He went three rush. Drop eight against fsu. Because last year the offense all they could do is hit the explosive and then all of a sudden floor state kind of gash them on the ground. He made some slight tweaks in the toledo game. Couple more tweaks against purdue and then last week against wisconsin. We're like he's got a completely adapt and adjusted to this wisconsin office. And i think he did that pretty well. The badgers never ran into a box. With less than six dame defenders right. There was some four by four stack being played. And so i think. When i look at this i would expect a defense that cincinnati hasn't seen yet this year but i i think the key here is cincinnati has to be able to run and force freemen to dedicate more to the box. And then you'll see desmond ritter off play action be able to strike some of those crossers some of the deep posts and if they can't run then things get a little bit. Tricky if you look at some of the metrics on paper cincinnati should be able to run their third and epa porush. Notre dame's fifty four th and epa. Porush obviously remove the f. Issue game when guys are getting acclimated to a new scheme and freemen's figuring out what is guys actually do best to put them in position to succeed. Things probably look a little bit. Different there Since the opener. I don't think freemans going to send a ton of bullets here. I'd expect the front seven to do decently against cincinnati's ground game even though again on paper you can make the case. Cincinnati shows out here. I think he's actually gonna use hamilton to play in the middle of the field. Maybe a little bit more of that linebacker role so he can spy on ritter. What's difficult for me is is notre dame's played about two good quarters of football. But i'm also not as impressed with cincinnati. I thought it would be. And so you're sitting here in a game at a virtual pick. Notre dame's won twenty six games at home straight. I believe our core number made notre dame minus one current line cincinnati about one and a half. There isn't a ton of here in the number. I think there could be a little bit of a battle going on the side as well. But i can certainly see why the fifty two did not last on the. It's so interesting when you look at this bearcats team and you talk about the leadership that desmond ritter brings. his body. language wasn't exactly the best in the win against indiana very demonstrative on the sidelines. We'll see if he can maintain a bit more of a level. Even keel in this and you talk about the bearcats weapons or lack thereof on a major level. Jerome ford is running the ball out of the backfield and clearly. They're belco but you look at their receiver group. I mean nobody on. This team has more than nine catches on the early season. And it's not as though cincinnati needed to show a ton in a dominant win against miami of ohio. They did after race early deficit against murray state. But you figure you were going to get the ball to your playmakers by hooker by crook in the win against indiana. They were able to separate themselves. Mainly because the defense force a couple of turnovers and held indiana short on downs but should be one hell of a game. And i know pain. So many people talking about cincinnati This is the biggest game in school history. 'cause if they win they would control their own destiny into the college football playoff before we get to that point. Let's pump the brakes and see if they can go into hostile territory and knock off an irish team that i think a lot of people discounted before the season and a win here. Suddenly we're talking about notre dame exceeding early season expectations roaming. This is the biggest game for them though. I mean for the irish you kind of note for cincinnati. Oh for sure. I mean you go down the list of who they've played in some of the meaningful games and i don't think there's a combination of program that they've faced in the upper echelon where it means so much to the potential future and there is some interesting elements here. We kind of talked about that. Familiarity brian kelly was at cincinnati yet in the late. Two thousand eight two thousand nine. I think was his last year there. Any obviously plucks defensive coordinator. Marcus freeman from the bearcats. This past off season and then freeman took. Mike mickens the db coach with them. And you can't fault freeman for going to a larger program. That's probably paying him a three acts but there is some bad blood here and i know you do as much reading as i do. But some of the bearcats players have come out and ben. Oh it personally opened this week. Yeah i mean to sean pace flat out said this week. I don't think it'll be weird going coach freeman. I just think you shouldn't have left. So now we gotta go out there and show them. Why shouldn't have left so there is some bad blood here. It wasn't all pots of golden rainbows on the way out for marcus freeman. You like a little bit of that side story going into a game. That's going to have Meaningful ramifications for both these programs when you look at the upcoming schedules that both of these teams will face should be one hell of a game. Two thirty eastern coming to you from south bend. Paint a pair of undefeated teams in the big twelve will do battle under the lights in stillwater. Where oklahoma state plays host to the baylor bears oklahoma state a three and a half point favorite fan duel sportsbook total in this game forty seven and a half down a shade from where it opened. When you look at oklahoma state they won the meeting between these two teams forty two to three a season ago. State hasn't started five. Since two thousand fifteen back then will. They actually started the campaign teno. Meanwhile you look at what baylor has been able to do. I think one of the bigger surprises. So far this season upsetting iowa state last week. But anyone who digs into the box score there sees the bears were relatively fortunate and opportunistic for a lack of a better term but one of the bigger surprises and questions you had about coming into the year was what this offense was going to look like. Bohannon has been a pleasant surprise against the slate of inferior opponents up until the win against iowa state but now going into hostile territory against the defense. That's been downright nasty allowing a grand total of seven points in the second. Half of wins against boise state. Two weeks ago on the road and last week against kansas state in their own building. That's the key..

"They've won twenty two twenty five games. Two of those three losses came back to back weeks against memphis last year. Sugar bowl game against georgia would be the other one. And when you look at notre dame. Hey brian kelly knocking new rodney from the purchase. The winningest head coach irish football history speaks a lot and a big part of that is because notre dame is one twenty five straight in south bend since a loss to number fifteen georgia back in september of two thousand seventeen fifty three and eight and their past sixty one home games. But this a little bit of uncharted territory with the bearcats. A modest road favourite knowing the high level of familiarity between fickle and his former defensive coordinator. We got a newt. Rock knee trent early on a wednesday morning new. Hey he was one of the greatest that there was. I had no idea. Honestly until i was watching the game against wisconsin and this is probably on me that brian kelly was going to become the winning his head. Coach and notre dame football history. You can make the case honestly that he might be the most underappreciated head coach and all of college football these days. I completely agree. Just hasn't gotten over the hump of like beating alabama clemson which nobody has has yeah correct. Yeah now in this matchup. It's always difficult trying to find the edge when there's a ton of familiarity. It's really difficult to assess that. And sometimes you know. I think it's the inverse of what others believe and for me in this game. That familiarity might mean marcus freeman noses former defense inside now right. He knows where the holes in the blind spots are. And that's what the bearcats defense right with players. That marcus freeman recruited. He knows those guys. Tendencies inside now. And so i think he might actually help the irish offense. The question i think is is notre. Dame's offense good enough to even attack. Some of the spots where. Marcus freeman tells them that his former defense is vulnerable. And we're still uncertain with who starts at quarterback for the irish jack cohn if he's healthy but for how long based on production if cones not healthy is pine. Is it a more mobile tyler. Buckner or mix of both so rather than try to figure that out here at six. Am on a wednesday morning. Let's go to the other side of the ball for for the key factor and it's it's mortgage freeman against his former offense and quarterback in desmond. Ridder cincinnati's offense. When i watched them. They kind of are what they are you know. They want to run the ball. The weapons outsider improved so they are throwing a little bit more crossers. They're taking bigshots downfield. It's clear i think. Desmond raiders ben at cincinnati for about eight years now. But there has timmy. Chang plan yes. Yeah i just feel like he's been there forever but he has made you know whether it's you the fifth year the six year of the ninth year. He had improvements in his passing game and albeit. It's small sample this season. He's really improved under pressure. He'd been a disaster under pressure. The last few years so yeah. He's excelled in that area. I would expect in a game of this magnitude that you see him. Run a little bit more. There's been some rumors that pickles ben town like. Hey you know we need you. You're vital to this playoff push. Let's kind of sit back a little bit more used the arm. Don't take off as much but in game this large when you look at the preceding schedule. It's like you know balls to the wall here. Anything you can pick up a first down or score some points. So i would expect desmond. Ridder's legs to be a little bit more in play for this game where it gets interesting. Is we know. Cincinnati coming off a bye. I would assume that we're gonna see a wrinkle here but You know again cincinnati's offense kind of is what it is. The one thing that marcus freeman has done exceptionally well. This season is that by week could be negated a little bit..

Every friday at noon eastern during the course of the college football and nfl season. Brad talked about upgrading michigan state. I mean they've been one of the bigger surprises there. You talked a little bit about where this number open before. The season pain. Suffice to say that we've been talking about this game right around and pick them even with accounting for homefield advantage given night situation east lansing. Yes that would have been roughly the number before the start of the season so we have seen that adjustment in you know to start the season. Obviously you lose as a seven point road favorite and michigan. State's come out like gangbusters winning on the road at northwestern as dog even otherwise sharp money there. We've had to make some adjustments and you know for three straight weeks. Michigan state has has seen in uptick in our power numbers now. Nebraska has also seen an uptick in the last few weeks. I believe we bump them off top my head about one and a half points for the performance when or two points for the performance at oklahoma but ultimately if you have a situation here where michigan state is half as good as you've bump them or seventy five percent as good as you bump them. There's going to be value in this number and obviously from the off season there's been a pretty large adjustment when you open three and a half is pretty telling tomato. That line said nebraska's decide here. Obviously were now out to five. Let's see if this is a little bit of maneuvering in the market and we ultimately see nebraska touch better number. Come in here. Closer to mysterious. Is anyone because when you look at it. And i think it's always important to kind of assess this early in the season. A big win that you thought at least thought week. One can oftentimes change and michigan state absolutely embarrassing northwest in their season opener at the time. Hey great i'm not going to discount that at all. But after watching northwestern plague duke and watching northwestern against indiana state. suddenly that wind doesn't carry as much luster. And we've been. We haven't been shy about sharing our disdain for miami michigan state of course was in seventeen. Seventeen game they use a three touchdown explosion in the third quarter a fourth quarter. Excuse me and ended up winning the turnover battle their plus four so in my opinion this is michigan state's biggest test to date. Let's see how they go out and if they take care of their business. Those are the four games where we tried to highlight. Excuse me a single factor. That'll be integral in trying to define the outcome more importantly who will be the victor where the point spread matters. Great time to remind you as well to follow pain on twitter at paine insider todd firm and you can follow me there. Most importantly follow the podcasts. At the board pod but i think paint a lot of our listeners. Going man what the hell you guys glossed over the two biggest games of the weekend contrary. We wanted to save the best for last and we'll go to soldier. Field where wisconsin and notre dame will do battle for the first time since one thousand nine hundred sixty four pain schools mind you that are separated by a grand total of two hundred and forty one miles and we know about notre dame's longstanding rivalry with a number of big ten programs. "In the third quarter. Notre Dame 23, Florida State's 20 bread, Me basket, and that was the same throw. The Jack Cohen had to Kevin Austin to end the second quarter for the offense on Notre Dame. He threw it a little inside this time in just two series now puts it on the outside to where only Kevin Austin can catch it, and the result is six points. Cone to Austin from 37. Yards out door waits for the snap. Snap is there hold is good. The kick is up. And the kick is also good. What a response by Notre Dame offensively route to do it by the air as well. Incredible job by Jack Cone showing leadership and giving confidence for the entire team through his play. Jack Cone. Ryan has five incompletions at this point of the game. He has three touchdown passes. And no picks. His official line reads 17 out of 22. 2 30 to 3 touchdowns and no pics, and he has spread the wealth pretty well. The touchdown passes going to tight end Michael Mayer going to wide receiver Joe Wilkins and the one moment to go to wide out Kevin Austin. Underplays 75 yards only took 1 44. 37 yards. The seesaw of a game. It's for the states of Notre Dame's of Florida State to train Stop. Let's go. Let's finish this game out. But what an exciting way to kick off your game season. Both of the touchdown passes have something in common here. One from Cohen. We just saw the one from Jordan Travis, both of these taking place in the third quarter. They were go routes down the sideline where the quarterback just put the perfect amount of touch and loft on it. Hitting their receivers in stride. Have in Austin and Jack own. Take a seat. "At north carolina umass at clemson. Nc state. miami was college at florida so my only point. The only reason i bring that up is that last year's team would have gone one in six against that sleet assuming they run the table after the notre dame game. If florida wants to get to a bowl they have to win. At least two or three of those seven games that i just listed they have to so who are the wieners in there. Maybe boston college maybe. Nc state maybe miami. I don't know but that's enough spell right in the middle there. They're going to have to contend with those last seven games. Yeah okay so. I would point to wake. So you're three games and now notre dame jacksonville state so you have a good idea of what you are and what you aren't by them. Sure exactly. I would point to to wake on the road. They beat north carolina behind a huge. First half and second second-half last year. So i would say competitive against north carolina. Even though they're going to be on the road and chapel hill and then probably nc state where they are as a program. Because that's what a letdown. Look ahead situation after clemson before miami. So what they look like at home against. Nc state so really. It's the north carolina schools which is very vague. Considering there are many north carolina schools in the acc but nc state and unc. To me are okay. So we're halfway through the season. What do they look like are they. Are they losing thirty. Four to seven or they you know at least giving north carolina's defense which isn't lights out a good amount to handle. Are they losing that game. Thirty five twenty seven you know what. What are we talking about with florida state. By the time they play north carolina. And what do they look like a letdown. Look ahead sandwich situation against the pack that to me. Yeah those those will be like the bookmarks of the twenty twenty one st season vegas for what it's worth has florida state at five and a half and five and a half wins as the over under. Most people were betting the under you get even money odds if you go over which is actually a pretty good number if you take the most possible optimistic view. The florida state. If you assume that mackenzie milton goes out there. And his incredible can find seven. I can find seven or eight. So i would go over that five and a half. I think wins over jacksonville state syracuse umass and then three of wake louisville. Nc state. miami. Maybe even notre dame and week one. I don't know well. We'll talk about her name. But i think there's a path they're for florida state. It's a really tough schedule. Brutal schedule fourteenth most difficult in the country this year. It's because it's book ended by notre dame and florida and then they've got games against clemson and miami some of these other. Acc powers between so. It's it's going to be a bumpy road. Altogether i think florida states in a much better spot. I feel like they finally got this thing turned around and going in good direction but Quarterback will be very instrumental in houthem. Horace goes ahead. What does that room look. Like behind. Mackenzie milton all it takes. Is you know and average hit and he might be a little bit more vulnerable. So yup they. Where are we going next Let's go. I'm going to save notre dame for last okay. Yeah you're only a half. acc team so. I don't know you tell me what what's go to. Nc state nc states really appealing to me remember about your father started going you. You're playing the sounds for everything now. i'm not i'm not. I'm just okay as the spirit moves. Sprinkle didn't for florida state. I wanted to get serious but nc state nc state was eight and four last year. They lost virginia tech north carolina and miami during acc play and they lost close to kentucky in the bowl game the best quarterback on the roster devon leary only three and a half games that was impart due to contact tracing early and breaking his leg late right so is move forward now. The appeal You want me to play. i'll play it. What the hell all sit down diesel tones. I think we're guaranteed to get some improvement in twenty twenty one. Because there's nineteen starters back devon leary is recovered. Bailey hawkins gone. He transferred to middle tennessee. State everybody is back on offense with the exception of their tight end and right guard. We've got bam night. We've got ricky person junior in the backfield for the wolfpack. Really good running back unit We've got every starter back on defense with the exception of lean mcneil who went pro. Probably the second best front seven in the sea. Behind clemson anchored by willis isaiah more at linebacker. Good secondary miami Interfet niba generate more turnovers. But it's a good team. It's a team and one of the recurring themes that kept coming up and going through all the preview content. That's out there is that this is. This is a crazy experience team. And dave doran has done a good job. He's now been extended four times. I believe why his tenure at nc state because they believe in the job he's doing it hasn't always been sexy most of the time it hasn't but this represents a very unique opportunity for nc state a very unique opportunity in that they bring back a lot of their talent pretty much all their talent from a year ago. And if they can get devon lear to be healthy devin leary's of very interesting player. I think it was clear in the limited action that we saw last year when he was in there. Him versus bailey. Hawk and like bailey. Hochman was fine but devin leary was a different a different cat. All that is what they were missing so if you throw him in the mix if you can keep him healthy if you can combine him with the bam nights and ricky persons and a.

"And then how is notre dame here irish lad irish there. I'm guessing. yeah george. Gipp played football for notre dame from nineteen seventeen to nineteen twenty. He was born in michigan in the upper peninsula. He came to notre dame to play baseball but he was recruited for the football team. Gipp lead the fighting irish in rushing and passing. He actually has some records. That are still on the books today. So there's a story about how Gipp died and it's probably not true at all though. Just tell you well let me something we talk about. But it's definitely worth mentioning and talking about when we talk about notre dame footba so. He was out late one one night and he returned to campus after curfew. He couldn't get into his dorm so he went to the rear door of of the washington hall. Which is The campus theater building and he went there because he knew that the door was often unlocked so when he partied a little too late he would often spend the night there but on that night. The hall was locked tight. He slept outside and by the morning he had contracted pneumonia and eventually died from a related infection now. The more likely story is that he got strep throat while giving punting lessons after his final game which was november twentieth nineteen twenty against northwestern another college around the area here and since there are no antibiotics in one thousand nine hundred ninety s These things were very hard to treat and it became much worse and eventually took him down. But rebecca you probably don't remember him. I football playing do you. Have you ever heard of this man get. This is not sound familiar to me. I mean it does because i've done research both researching this episode. If you had said yeah. Who's the most famous football player. Whatever no i would not have thought of this name. But he's not just famous for the way that he played football. He was on his hospital. Bed said this to a football coach. Name rodney i've got to go rack. It's all right. I'm not afraid sometime rock when the team is up against it when things are wrong and the breaks are beating. The boys asked them to go in there with all they've got and win. Just one for the gipper. I don't know where. I'll be then rock but i'll know about it and i'll be happy. Yeah so he was the gipper that you know. Everyone's talked about when they say when one for the gipper. Okay so i'm just gonna. I'm gonna be vulnerable here and saying that when ever heard the phrase win win for the gipper. My brain has always thought of ronald reagan. You know y why okay. I did not until researching this. Ronald reagan played the gipper gipper in movie. And so like i. I swear. I've heard people refer to ronald. Reagan is the gipper and it never made any sense to me. I didn't understand any of it. But would he was playing this character with ronald reagan. A lot of times Like he took on the personality of the person that he played and People gave gave him credit for the things that those people did. I so anyways all right so the gipper is this guy played. Football got it. So rodney used the story of gipp..

"Under the name of the university of notre dame du lac Which is the university of our lady of the lake so Notre dame is just our lady and notre dame do lock means the lady of the lake university of the lady of the lake. I love it. Yeah because the university was originally a male female only saint. Mary's college was founded by the sisters of the holy cross near notre dame in eighteen forty four so shortly after. Yeah that's amazing in eighteen. Forty nine notre dame awarded. Its first degrees. So that's a long time ago it's been operating that's amazing. Yeah definitely especially for a private college like this. That doesn't get the same government funding. Exactly soren strength was demonstrated on april twenty third eighteen seventy nine when a fire destroyed the main building which housed virtually the entire university and also the library. Oh and their library was was pretty big. At that time. It had like a thousand bucks at that time so sad. Yeah timothy edward howard Which became a chief justice at the indiana supreme court and he was also a professor at notre dame provided a first person account of what soren said inside the sacred heart church. I was then president when father soren after looking over the destruction of his life work stood at the altar steps of the only building left and spoke to the community. What i have always felt to be the most sublime winds ever listened to there was absolute faith confidence resolution in his very look and pose. If it were all gone. I should not give up. His words enclosing. The effect was electric. It was the crowning moment of his life. A sad company had gone into the church that day. They were all simple christian. Heroes came out. There was never more shadow of a doubt as to the future of notre dame. Yeah what's kind of funny too. Is that some people. Recall him saying something like the virgin. Mary thought it wasn't big enough. The building oh so that's why she burned down. Wow so that we will have to build bigger. Okay yeah nation. I'm i don't know if he actually said that. But a lot of people recalled hearing him say they'll time Soren passed away on october thirty first eighteen. Ninety three at the age of seventy-nine he's laid to rest at the holy cross cemetery in notre dame he died of bright's disease which is a historical classification of kidney disease. So during sorin's years at notre dame he saw a lot of new buildings being built including an eighteen eighty eight they opened the basilica of the sacred heart. The first notre dame football team. I played in notre dame on november twenty third. Eighteen eighty seven nearly forty five years to the day after father sworn arrived in northern indiana. The university chose to honor the irish with the name. The fighting irish Which you would think they would have called the fighting french right. Well when you said the six priests sounded like there were more irish than french. I mean obviously soren was french. But i also chicago and this whole area has a lot of irish and i assume a lot of irish catholic parents would have wanted to send their kids there. Yeah but it is interesting that it's not that the name of the university is french. Yeah but the name of the football team is irish. Because i always thought you know. "notre" Discussed on The Audible with Feldman And Mandel

"I watched the clips of brian. Kelly press conference and he looked like he was exact exasperated. And i don't know if you're a notre dame fan. How do you feel about this. Because he's i mean he's a really really good coach. We do these top. Twenty five lists every year and brian. Kelly definitely should be in the top five and they have really good players. But i don't know and he's right alabama's done this to almost everybody. They actually didn't do it. The florida but you know was there were still you know it's like we'll see if ohio state gets closer. So let's let's fill people in on the quotes if they didn't see them after the game not surprisingly. Maybe he was surprised. I don't know he was asked a lot about. How does the here how frustrating the question was how frustrated is. How frustrating is it to get to a playoff again lose by this margin the margin not the issue. Losing his losing. I don't know really. What the inferences. This football team battled and they made more plays they being alabama made a few more. Plays on the perimeter. I'm not sure really what the question is when you lose football games you know. There's a few more plays jeff to make. We had the opportunity. You watch the game. I watched the game <hes>. So everybody needs to continue to carry this narrative that not not good enough. Look at the scores of the games. The albums played all year. And i think when you start changing the narrative little bit then somebody asks as you look at it. You feel like the program has gotten a lot closer. What's the next step. You feel like you guys could take need to take i. I don't really wanna continue to go down this path. We're going to keep getting here okay. And we're gonna keep banging at it and you guys watched the game in you. They had the college football player of the year. Who made some dynamic place. We battled. We were right there. So we're going to keep getting back here. And i'm sorry i don't like it or the national media doesn't like it but we're going to go back to work we're gonna keep recruiting. We're going to put ourselves back in this position again <hes>. I mean i know. He's got to defend the program. And you know what's he going to say like. Oh yeah we're we're we've got a ways to go <hes>. But you're right like if you're ordering fan who who still believes deep down the program. That should win the national championship. How do you feel about your coach. Basically coming on saying he's basically trying to say yeah. We don't have a devante smith. We don't have nausea harris. But we were good enough that like if we caught them on the day we could one maybe is that is that we took from it. Yeah and i'm thinking about it. It's like this notre dame team. And i would say it from the last from the jalen smith <hes>. Ronnie stanley era up. So whatever it is i guess. Maybe it's the last five or six years they've had like some special athletes right. I mean ronnie stanley elite talent offensive lineman jalen field. Jalen fields. Jalen was is home. Ultra talented linebacker. They've had <hes>. Kyle hamilton is as athletic as any any safety. The country i mean they have some of these guys will fuller was as fast and dynamic as any receiver just about. I mean it's not like they haven't kyran williams of big time running back they just don't have quite enough of them right. I mean like they don't have any of them. It's not like you know. The the line from joey galloway said like northwestern's a bunch of reese davis's you know the inference there is like notre dame has has some guys who would play anywhere and they've always had a bunch of good offensive linemen. They have good tight ends. I don't think they're light years away from having like a team that could win a national title. I mean they're they're a top five team. It's just you know. I don't know like like maybe this is a better way to frame it. Like if they were playing ohio state they have somehow gotten by alabama. I mean <hes>. Let's take alabama out of the equation if they were playing ohio state and somehow it was a two three game. Let's say let's say that it was just a playoff game but it wasn't. You know as the i. I could see <unk>. Notre dame beating ohio state. Even after what. I just saw from ohio state alpha. If justin feels plays away did tonight. I couldn't but <hes> like i don't think it's out of the realm of possibility like i think there are. You know i watched their. I think notre dame's better team than georgia. I think not notre dame honesty's a better team than florida now. It's easy to say that after you've seen some of these teams get exposed some but lake and those teams. Those teams have played with alabama on a given night right. So i just don't think they have as much margin for error right
