"Moment to wash over you. I also love the idea of wisdom coming from elders and keeping a good counsel around you. And even young people, I love the energy and the innovation that they bring. And it helps to settle my spirit and my mind. Out of the troubled time, the troubled water and into something that's hopeful that's joyful and positive. And lastly, but definitely not the least. I absolutely rely and recommend you rely on community to get through the adversity. Having a tribe of people with whom you can express yourself, share ideas, but not only sharing ideas, you can also share the burden. A lot of times is entrepreneurs, you see things coming down the horizon or over the horizon and maybe you're not able to fully communicate that with all of your team members or even your family members. But another entrepreneur, oh, they get it. They definitely get it. And so having this tribe, this community that you're able to lean into is so important. One of the things that I loved watching in 2020 was the way that runway helped companies come together inside of a tribe. And shout out to some beautiful companies. One story that comes to mind is essence of flowers. It is a company that's based in Oakland. And they were pivoting their business. And doing some really interesting ideas and things, but they struggled like a lot of companies with having enough workforce or people to come and help them to fulfill the orders that they had and so what I saw was they were able to tap into this community of other entrepreneurs who completely understood and completely wanted essence of flowers to succeed. And they came together and they served as the employees, the workforce, if you will, to help make that possible. It was magical, so beautiful to watch. So here it is again. After a tremendously heartbreaking year in 2020 we walk away with some deep understanding about what it means to pivot. What it means to allow a new thing to be born. That's the opportunity in pivoting your company to let something manifest that maybe you wouldn't have always tried. To practice gratitude to remember that no matter what it is that you're going through, this was once a prayer, this was once a hope or a dream. And to allow for that to comfort you because you're prepared, you envision this and you're prepared to go through this. The third thing let the wisdom shape you. Let it wash over you. Let it change you. Let it turn you into who you've always wanted to be. And the fourth and my favorite. If you're going through something lean in on your community. A community of entrepreneurs, a community of people who are like minded of values. Folks who get you and get what you're about, lean on them, trust in them. Because they're the people who are going to say, you know what? You're not crazy. I'm feeling it too, and you will get through this. Remember trouble don't last always. One of the strategies she shared today was gratitude was the idea of just recognizing the fact that you have overcome challenges before. One of the traits that entrepreneurs often have is that they are always looking forward. They're always looking at what's the next thing. What you have to do, what they should accomplish by next week by next month by next year. And we often do not look backwards. Meaning we don't look back at all the accomplishments we have accomplished or have achieved, you know? We don't look at all the things that we've done, all the things that we've conquered. We kind of just forget about all the work we've done to get to this point, and it's really important as entrepreneurs, especially when you're in a tough situation to remind yourself, you've been through tough times, you've overcome them. You've done amazing things you've built an incredible business. You have customers that are spending money at your business. They love what you do, you have great reviews, you have great compliments from friends and family. You're doing what you set out to do. You are capable of great things, reminding yourself of these things is really important because their facts are undeniable and it's great evidence to give yourself to say, hey, you got this. But in my opinion, it's actually one of the perks of being a business owner. Why? How could that be a perk? Well, when you go through a challenge, it makes you a better person. It makes you a better entrepreneur. It makes you more valuable to the marketplace. You're able to navigate, you're able to adapt you're able to solve problems and pivot. These challenges, these adversities make you stronger and because entrepreneurship will give you these things constantly, you're constantly getting stronger and stronger every day. And like a friend of mine once said, the thing about businesses, it's never boring. It's always exciting. It's always something new to tackle. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take.

Because listen, as we know entrepreneurship is a roller coaster up and down. This lesson will help you be prepared for those down moments. So I'm going to pass it on to Jessica Norwood now, but I'll be back to wrap up today's episode. But for now, take it away, Jessica. Hi, everybody. I'm Jessica noor wood, and thank you for joining me today. Today I will be teaching you about the lessons from 2020 on overcoming adversity as an entrepreneur. All right. So let's get to it. Now when I think about 2020, I think about the adversity we faced as a nation and the world. And because I focus on black entrepreneurship, my heart and mind immediately goes back to the summer of 2020 and the death of George Floyd. The part of that that's really important to me as a financial innovator is the way that the national conversation on racism and biased move from policing to black businesses. Overnight, there were these pledges of support for black companies. And there was this interesting combination of stories about how black businesses have been boxed out of economic opportunities and exploited by brands. And this real desire, I think, at least, to invest in black companies as a way of signaling their support for the community. But what actually happened was there was a huge amount of overwhelm and stress on those companies. As the pandemic raged and remember, we're talking about a pandemic that disproportionately impacted communities of color. There was not a lot of support to begin with for black companies to get the capital they needed. And so that meant that as these opportunities came by, the ability to take advantage of these big offers from major corporations just wasn't there. The pandemic also made it incredibly terrible. Terribly difficult to hire people and to retain them. And if that wasn't enough, there were significant supply chain delays for products and goods that were back order for months. This put a level of adversity for entrepreneurs, particularly black entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of color. In a level of peril that I've never seen before. The idea behind the resources was meant to be transformative. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually really get a different positioning for these companies. Instead, there was a lot more adversity than I think we even acknowledge. Here are the four things that I noticed that helped companies overcome the adversities that they faced. All right, so these are the four things that I learned that I really became more familiar with and got a chance to appreciate. And what it takes to overcome adversity, particularly in 2020. Four things. I'm going to tell you what they are right now to pivot. Gratitude, wisdom. And community. Pivot, gratitude, wisdom, and community. All right. So let's unpack it. Pivoting. If there was ever a moment in time for you to pivot that business, now is the time. I love a good pivot because it can re energize you and it gives you permission to let go of what's not working. So long as you keep constant with this question about what new revenue streams can we introduce that provides more value to our customers. I had a lot of the companies that we worked with move from a traditional brick and mortar into a relationship with their customers through a digital space. And in order to do that they had to deepen their understanding of what that customer needed in that new moment and in that new relationship and also how to reach them. So we saw a lot of increase in expenditures around marketing and these kinds of movements I think made all of the difference and particularly those companies that were able to do it early on. It was a game changer. So pivoting your business is important, particularly, I would say, you know, a lot of times it's a piece of advice that folks don't really want to give you because it makes you think that you failed in your company if you made a if you made a pivot or that your staving off the inevitable that the company is in danger in some way, but I think not making the movement is the danger. And there is some risk in doing this, but a calculated thoughtful risk where you go into an exploration period around this could be generously helpful for your company. The second thing I would recommend and that I've seen a lot, I personally do this is I practice gratitude. Gratitude, oh, my goodness is so important. There's a saying that trouble don't last always. And I love it because it's helpful to keep things in perspective. Every morning I get up and I do my gratitude practice and I sit quietly and I think about how far I've come. How this even in the midst of the adversity was a prayer was something that I hoped for that where I am in my business and what I'm doing was once something that I dreamt of being able to do. And so I keep calm and I practice gratitude, thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for the lessons. Thank you for the experience. Thank you for the exposure. Thank you for the opportunity to become the human being and the business owner I've always wanted to be. The third thing that I see is the way that wisdom grows. This is an opportunity to let this mold you. To let this turn you into the thoughtful, steadfast, measured boss, employer, that you've always wanted to be. There is wisdom inside of the adversity. There's experience inside of surviving a thing, and being able to come out on the other side with your testimony, with your story of how you did it. It gives you an advantage, a strategic advantage where other folks might fall into that pit of despair or unknowing you've got the information. You know how to move. And you can offer that to other folks into your team members. You become infinitely more valuable having allowed the wisdom.

It's Ole Gone Wrong: Manchester United lose to Sheffield United
"United losing at home missing the chance to go top of the table defeated by bottom of the table. Sheffield united registering. Just second win of the season craig. I wanted to this happen. Possession but but really never trouble chef united gold out many times. Keep with enough to make that. Many saves chef united defended brilliantly. I mean phil. Jackie ohka failty. I think as robot the years bedtime and recent games is gone back to the tried and trusted in midfield which was from flake and norwood. Those guys have been up to save for parts of the season and that was the fulcrum of of their team last year. And in fact. I said i go back to basics here. This was the chef united. We saw last year scrapping and fighting and defend in trying to feed off scraps the other side and united was sloppy. I mean you look at the second goal it was. I think was go on ahead. So wasn't wasn't buck. I thank you boys was bought. Another joke guzman is so much time in the bulks on two occasions was bar and it was on the players within five yards new-look to and there were sloppy so when nine days doesn't have a sparkling game or russia doesn't have a sparkling game. This united say just lacks the guy that we saw from manchester city yesterday. How do you explain that. Defending the second goal. Steve is really weird. Well you just think in some ways when you play against a team league sheffield united. Who bottom of the league. You've pegged them back and you kind of you kind of think it's just going to happen. You're just going to go on and get the one up and so you drop certainly level of intensity because as far as quality it wasn't really there for united but the intensity was there to get equalizer and i think once they did that just a little drop. And that's what happens you know. Nobody takes the initiative. Nobody you know certainly usually when somebody has the ball at the feet in the box. You'd expect to not just one but two defenders could be gone in either thrown overboard in the line or just making a good solid challenge of get close enough. That didn't happen and that to me is just took a little bit easier after the equalizer thinking the all that to do is just see to score and we see today. Why manchester united win. The title. Worldwide tipped to win the league but craig was talking about. They had fantastic possession but mashes united. Can't handle possession and that's the probably you go. From beating liverpool liverpool keane had initiative. They went up and then scored. But i will also a respect scheffler united for their performance. I mean you could say. They deserve the window game because in the second half would it should be a pressure from manchester united at putting cavan on. There should make all kinds of efforts to get at least equalize. It didn't happen. I can't remember the chef. United goalkeeper had to make any big saves any big interceptions. Sometimes it came for crosses. So i think that that was mentioned uniting loosing on dreadful day of manchester united in the like marcial his buddy which is not even european europa league. Ins- it's down in the go. We don't championship. I can't believe how sometimes goes along on the pitch

Michael, What do you guys hearing from your friends that work in the restaurant industry or Pity their sole owner. Restaurant talk. I'm gonna go to you on this one. Well, I mean, what do you ask me what you hear from? What are they telling you about their business in private? I mean, business is definitely ticked back up, especially if you have an outdoor patio or anything like that. But there have been challenges. You know more So for indoor seating, whether you have to put a plexiglass or get jugs of hand sanitizer and make yourself Cove it except accessible. I guess All I've done is eat outside. But you can go inside a restaurant now you can, Yes, not the bars. But inside a restaurant's Yes, and they're limited to what About 50%? You know, there's no limit. It's justa Sze long as people are six feet apart. Okay, so no limit, hypothetically, But, yeah, I mean, if you're a small restaurant in the north end, you've got some severe capacity limits on. Yeah. I mean, I've just been seeing. I mean, I'm sure you guys have well, you're driving around. You just seem tense upon tents. Outside. Of all these places right in their parking lots was great till probably the second or third week in October. Sure, Yeah. I mean that. It's a different story. Well, see, we're at then. But, I mean, you know, there are different heaters you could put outside. But, yeah, I mean, not too attractive to sit outside at that time of year. Now, I think You know, I'm not optimistic for restaurants right now. But as long as As long as they know what their capacity limits you're going to look like a cz long as I can forecast that, Okay, This is how many people I'm going to have in my restaurant on this day for the next three months. Then I would think that they can at least exist. I think what is a very big concern is those states that are on the verge of re closing restaurants or reinforcing new restrictions on them. Or even if they don't get new restrictions just forced on them, just, you know. You've got family in Arizona. I've got family in Arizona. People I know don't want to go out to restaurants right now because they're nervous about you know the amount of infection out there and so I think that act of reopening and then having to re close again. That's the killer. That is. You have to read it. If you have to close again and throw out inventory again, right, right. That's fast, those that fixed one time costs of closing and re opening and closing again. Because our takes detrimental. It takes like 10 days to get everything in order without your staff. Your inventory. It's not like you can just close and then opened the very next day. It takes time. What do you think happens to things like buffets and salad bars? So they gone forever? I think that had never been to a golden corral before. I don't intend that you won After that. I think that if you're going to the world famous salad bar of whole foods I think those days are over. Gone for good. I think they're gone for good. That might but that actually Tucker when you look at the amount of infection like if you've ever read an analysis of like that's pretty gross when you think about it, But I mean, I don't know what I love Salad bar. Somebody just sneezed on it. You know, I mean, they got this new scars, but like and then just like, Oh, you gotta think of the utensils. Maybe, um, I mean, you know the person I talked to had a feeling that they were done at whole foods all together, but We'll see. I mean, for some restaurants like Reitman's there pull prepared food section with the buffets. That's a big I would say. That's a pretty big part of that thing about Sunday Buffet Sunday brunch was not like that was a big deal. You get out all the I don't think I mean, I don't think it's gone. Don't you think that'll come back? That'll combat. You could just move the prepared foods behind the counter and then the employees just handle everything. And then you kind of order like a chipotle, If you only just behind the glass. I was never a fan of a buffet anyway. Like I would rather have somebody Prepare my food for monkeys. There tend to be better at it. I love the face. Now who doesn't love a buffet? Come on, hich, Michael. Like it all you can eat like a salad Buffet just does nothing for me, Tucker Buffet. That's not going to do anything for me. You know, folks, as the Corona virus pandemic has continued to create uncertainty across the country. Interview With Mayor John Gates On Partial Reopening
"Com by really mayor John Gates Mayor Gates welcome back to the show. Good to be with you good morning to you. I certainly appreciate your taking the time and there's a lot going on. As Greeley of course, as other cities across the state, indeed across the nation, enjoying a return to some semblance of normalcy. Tell us what that looks like. Well you're right. There is some sense normalcy the fact that where we get the restaurants back open. At least to an extent, you know pretty pretty well, said all along that the two entities that have really suffered from the Kobe closures are restaurants and churches. And the church is still are suffering, unfortunately, due to the fifty person rule, but My wife and I've been out several times since we've been able to sit down and Dine I. Guess It's the small things you appreciate because that surely has been nice. It's kind of fascinating when you think about it because we were talking about this just last week, the fact that going out to a restaurant is like. Taking a world cruise or taking a trip to the moon. Again it is a return to the small things that makes such a difference in in our lives. If there's any good, take away from all this. Maybe that's that. Makes, you appreciate the small things never did. I think I would miss. so much being able to go, sit down, have a cup of coffee with somebody or better yet a meal and while we certainly a lot of carry out. It's not the same as going to sit in a restaurant and catching up on the day and getting warm food versus the. Wolf lukewarm food when the carry out outcome, so that's where they've been great and. I were phone boxes here. Exactly, the Styrofoam box and we're starting to get things open back up the city to the degree that we can which is good. There's a slow rollout occurring today with our fixed up transit buses We're opening municipal court backup today. we've got some Other departments opening drive through or by appointment only so slowly, but surely not quite yet on the cool. The REC centers part of the problem with the pool. and. Even the REC centers is that we've got that fifty person maximum. And we talked a great wink at our city council meeting last night about specifically centennial pool and the to dilemmas. We have one is that we saw that is that at the beginning of this laid off all her stuff seasonal swig. We can obviously get some of them back. To run the pool, but our parks and REC. Director colors that we get. During Summer Day especially these that have been so warm three to four hundred kids centennial pool every day, so if we can only it fifty. That's problematic so while I understand the reason for that in an area that says large as as much square footage of centennial pool. I hope the governor loosens that fairly soon to allow us to adapt at number to a more appropriate number which folks we might be having using them so. Now. We're looking forward to. If I'm not mistaken here under this amended safer at home order, a swimming pools again allowed to reopen. Once those draft guidelines are improved. Final draft of those guidelines will be available on Thursday. Is that what you're hearing is absolutely what I'm hearing. Yeah, so. we're. We're kind of sitting at the ready waiting for some of those. Things to happen I've been A number of local pastors have reached out to me and we feel for them from the standpoint that I spoke to a pastor yesterday. WHO said you know I have eight hundred people in my congregation and I can easily socially distance and keep everybody safe by allowing four hundred in, but the current rules only allow fifty, so they're looking at some things like outside and. And they're really getting the short end right now at a time when people may be more than ever need to services of their church and their pastor, so we're. We're getting there. probably not as quite as quickly as I'd like. We are starting to make some open or Kobe. Numbers really leveled out that we're really happy about that. And what about Jay BS? Swift the meat processing plant in Greeley. What are you hearing about that up? Not very much they're not, they're not yet at full capacity of I'm hearing they've not had any deaths and knock on wood in a couple of weeks. I don't know to what degree they have employs out sick, but. It was certainly tragic. Losing the workers they did and I hope everybody's. Certainly getting better and have not heard anything to the contrary. Now back to restaurants, and again we've talked about this to a great extent, because our return to daily life and living space to lot upon our confidence level, so I'm curious as you've been eating out at restaurants. Are you seen? folks coming to restaurants and being comfortable enjoying the opportunity to just get out and dine again. I I absolutely have The restaurants that that I've been to certainly the restaurants who are following the rules doing everything right there, socially distancing their staffs. Geared up with the appropriate PP HE I. Know People personally and I've seen some commentary from others that said. There's just no way we're ready to go out right now and that that's totally fine. It's the person ought to be able to make some personal choices in life, and for those that aren't comfortable going out that's certainly a decision that they or their families should make I my family is comfortable, going out while adhering to. safety guidelines, but they've not been packed. Of course. The law would know rats that the restaurants that I've been to have certainly had decent amount of people and The restaurant tours is really doing a great job complying with. What they've been asked to comply with so very pleased at this point. What about expansion not only patio dining. Using additional space around restaurants if it indeed is available that seems to be a point of some conversation and debate. It does end up. Council fully supports. A business whether they're downtown or another parts of Greeley the opportunity to expand their turning footprint. It's a what easier for them to do. Downtown because the city owns the real estate Some of the restaurants that aren't downtown are going to have to seek permission from whoever owns the property to expand out, but that doesn't fact gives them the opportunity. To seat more, we've been working closely with the downtown restaurant tours to expand their footprint which would involve alcohol service and be able to get more customers. Be Able to make Starts get back on our feet again financially. And there's. An ordinance pending that would allow the areas on the ninth street plazas to be open container areas. Temporary so. Something I think the council doesn't WANNA do year round Norwood, the restaurant tours in the middle of winter want people to be sitting outside, but it is perhaps not an opportunity for the period from about now until Labor.

C. fatter in self awful what's his name was and I forget the guy's name Ron some rather he was the head coach your city so he's tabs and says Anthony one out moon you always is throwing a ball in the mid nineties the first two pages are over the top of the batter's head and no one charge the mound no one went out there smart play smart play not are the balls to harder today than when you played think thereafter the tide and they're going to the park but record breaking numbers and you know one guy's again jam down around the hands and still force the ball out so I think they're a little rough to a tight other batters and have a broken bat they still had a home run right I mean that that's impossible in it good afternoon got a got a strong and no Jackson could do it yeah you do anything so I give me some sports and make it fast then we got Rachel here about some issues on my blog well the the astute reporters approach service every local temp star heating and air conditioning dealers ten star quality you can feel in northern Kentucky in Cincinnati call peak heating and cooling at eight five nine.

"Mikey in Norwood has been waiting for ever Mike one of these nights I got to get back to Kwantlen KFA Mike are you there yeah I'm here ma'am all right man thanks so much for holding she he's a man who live in grey where love on the red but you know that the game is not that much board to go pick shoulder four year old we went last night two of the top to watch the glad to celebrate something tonight but you know how my boys with me couldn't help but notice up week lack of effort on and off the field you know lackadaisical not my picture look that make of that what what the only the last one off the building on the field so you know my question is at what point does the you know somebody Bato rebel or somebody you know Hey we know what you can give us physically we know you know you're all we know what you can what you can give us you know with your athletic talent but my horse I'm concerned he can walk off the field and you can walk on it because between the lines the duties busting his tail absolutely playing a gold glove right field it is the high on this team right now I don't care about body language Coleman on or off the field I don't care about him sitting down during a of pitching change in the Reds bullpen the Judas posting his tail and diaper rash and I appreciate the call tonight integrate is also in Norwood high grade yeah you know Jack outstanding yes wondering you know how we have been in Medicare by play all the different positions I wonder why they don't do making a starter are they tried that once there you go yeah and he is much better in this role that he sent a little set up save situations the dude is an absolute against lefties he's an absolute stud yeah you know he made a guy like that no he could be dark Jeff did closer for this club if they would ever decide to move right celebrates yes well okay that'll work now we also see him come out for a second inning you don't struggle a little bit so he gets he he's awesome period and he just keeps getting better and better every year I like to watch him I do too I live for the matchup between him Amir Garrett and Anthony Rizzo Chicago jobs yeah yeah well when we have two beautiful man it appreciate the call thank you and brand is in Indianapolis Brandon how we doing tonight you gotta be love in life and live in large after this victory absolutely check certain that you know what you said about India we love our basketball and stuff yeah after that loss last night man I just want to drink a lot of beer but of course I didn't man that when I was little yeah you can't you can't do that it just brought back all these bad memories of the San Francisco game eight enough then on may third another Friday night but that was kind of gradual Sonny gray was on the mound at night gave up four runs it was eight to four the red headed a little he added and then saying that San Francisco just kept coming back twelve to eleven well last night was just such a shock because of the ten runs in the sixth inning just such a snowball rolling down hill that they could not stop that they should have stopped with just sound most fundamental defensive baseball and I think if you didn't get to the playoffs for the wild card you know you have to look back at it now I was gonna say I'd rather see the grass grows in the Chicago Cubs play because I just can't stand that team but I know they're good I can send the women patriots either but I know that they're good and stuff like that you know but I mean is forced people talking about bottle and stuff like that yeah I understand I understand what the comments are coming from you're not producing if you're making all this money I think that's what the service people but it would be hard to trading as far as we can concern lance said that there was something in his contract or something that you could you could you could have him agree to stay for one year is that right well it it's offering him eight making him a qualifying offer for eighteen million dollars okay and then Hey if he takes it you got in for another year if he leaves then you've you get draft picks so that's an option right there I would love to have him around I would love to have him around and I think you're right so I mean that's why I mean I understand there's a lot of you know but I just wouldn't trade production prospects aspects of me I understand you have a lot of people you probably can't afford all of them but yeah gosh we gonna try to sign some of these guys could be he tricks really done some good he's produced a general are you know on the Amir gear your clothes are so if someone wants so lazy assuming you're maybe that makes sense I don't know what they're gonna do but all that so it's a more wait we're waiting on here by the end of this month it's going to yeah yeah also I don't think the playoffs Sir I have a question I mean I know that that loss last night in thank god you lose not because you have a double digits under five hundred but just ahead like I mentioned from August fifth through the twenty first they play thirteen out of sixteen games at great American ball park in if there okay look with what little rock you get a couple of years ago they did win the division but they they come they come from like fourteen games out or something like that made it somehow Hey we see it we still got all of August in all of September so right in another week to get ready for a miracle brother yet as it happened right so I just try to be optimistic and positive and I know you have other callers god bless them that Hey I hope we that they'll get the air conditioning fixed good luck with your partner I love you check in all right planted appreciate the call brother have a great rest of the weekend and stay cool thank you so much gosh what anybody coming home from the ball park did job you know we're there misting stations in cooling rooms at G. A. B. P. if you took advantage of those man let me know what how it went and then where is Jose repose water gun when you need it man remember to water gun in the dog out that was just awesome on windows Cincinnati Midwest hot Saturday Sunday.
