"Track will run for Northwood university cross country and track that's pretty cool keep the shuttle's coming I mentioned in my conversation with mark you about a month ago when the winter championships are canceled in the spring sports are canceled that I wanted to reach out to coaches across the state all sports boys girls winners a championship teams that were still alive spring sports and kind of get their feel about the coronavirus its impact on their team their school district families their own personal journey through this and it's been fantastic conversation with Scott Sello baseball coaches superintendent from Homer high school near battle creek in our one brought Delaney varsity swim coach at the west high school in the Lansing area last hour and we welcome in one of the best high school basketball coaches in the state Tom Vander clay he is the head boys basketball coach at Wyoming hi and I had a chance to see them towards the end of the regular season mea they were loaded with seniors they were playin a good basketball in Tom joins us now here on the huge show across Michigan welcoming coach well thanks for letting me go yeah hi I have a chance of sitting there with teddy Holleran watching you you're playing were the school district my kids go to grant of torsos eastern and yeah I looked at that team and I said well I told teddy a said you know they got dept they got good guard play I got a good leadership they have one of the best three point shooters high school basketball's overseen in the state and I thought this team could make a run and then a couple weeks later we get word that the winter sports championships were put on hold A. N. here we are today so coach that first text that call that zoom conversation with your team telling them that their season was over what was that like for Wyoming high basketball well that was you know I was rough it was really kind of came in segments we practice that serves day before the district championship game would've been played and that thinking that we're gonna have a limited crowd of just parents and before we knew it the whole game was canceled I was actually at a faculty meeting and a pencil Canaday better let's see teddy seriously how could it be worse than than what it was and sure enough they cancel or thing so that's the last we were together as a team was that Thursday before the district championships so so we we didn't lose hope that we were thinking Hey welcome back at thirteen eighteen hole start school again and maybe have April madness or something like that and of course and it is it is it got drawn out drawn out eventually of course market to cancel it and that was that was a tough one that was a tough one to swallow it was actually really done and not just but forecast to be done so I really appreciated mark we appreciate marking it as long as he could to see if we could schedule it in for you as a coach man urinating to Wyoming Park graduate and then Wyoming park in Miami Rogers merged into while in high school today the wells in the basketball program you run and you've been around a lot of great athletes you look at all your teams and when you get a group of seniors and the team no matter their freshman sophomore junior and senior the day work most of their high school careers even going back to middle school days to get to this point where everything was Jelling where they had a shot whether a champion and they were even thinking of getting to the Breslin that's hard for the kids not to experience and finish out that senior year in hopes yeah you just don't know do you know this is always going to be that wonder you just don't know and really they played together since they've been in elementary school well so we said these kids note that you have some pictures of them in the little elementary jerseys but it's it's a long time preparing and it took three things about it is it really stinks to me in that situation where they it got canceled but number two is a lot of people there's a lot worse things a lot worse things can happen having your your cheese and cancel at that point the number three is a still stinks it's it's hard to deal with all that work and preparation as individuals on the team we we had to take the precautions we still are and I get it man that we didn't know if those kids are going to get infected and there be children dying and all across the state of Michigan all across America we just didn't know and even marking his team they waited it out and the longer we had to to extend executive orders it was obvious that the the spring sports would be gone in the winter championships I would be canceled and we we not aired I won't say that is that we had to and we still are live in by the side of caution or on the side of caution you understand what I'm saying yeah there's there's there's bigger things right and it it it doesn't necessarily make it easy but it certainly is something to be recognizable and and the reality of it is that it's all about education athletics at this point anyway but that's that's a tough lesson that was a tough lesson to learn yeah and then then the lessons learned and of talk to coaches I've talked to pro athletes I've talked to you know my insiders my friends on their office in what I've seen through this is the appreciation for what we don't have been maybe things we used to do when we stop doing because life got so fast more that's for sure yeah yeah it is it brings were flying in your thinking but that's normal and now for the last month or two months or whatever it's been here now we have a new normal and hopefully we'll get back to that other normal or at least closer to it as soon as possible but for sure people are in the cabin one hundred miles an hour going to class or doing the study so we're going to work on the practice of getting the bus schedule and damn instantaneously they go from a hundred miles an hour zero not even school the next day we cancel that Friday as a matter of fact we don't have school at Friday so it was it was correct yeah my daughter a she was going to be a freshman which is cool to play varsity soccer at Forest Hills eastern Himalaya I don't think I could see it about two weeks after the fact when the games are gonna start right around that April thirteenth you're talking about after spring break when the spring sports really kick in well yeah I I could see a mood change with her I really could it was really easy that week of spring break knowing that you're coming back in you're not going to play yeah and and one good thing though I did see that in the grand rapids area they're shooting for July August of all the high school soccer teams are going to play a summer leagues not sanctioned by the MHSAA but they're gonna give the girls including the seniors twelve games in a little any tournament and they're going to do that this summer that would be best case scenario that medically everything is in a good place by the time you get to the end of June so that's pretty already great yeah be great yeah it's almost like you would yeah you know my first thought was and I was just in on my daughters coach coach Rosenberg said that to the parents of the kids with I started the thank you know what we need to we need a basketball we need to but not a sanction Michigan high school athletic association tournament if it gets in again this is best case scenario not been living on the positive side of this I have to otherwise would drive me insane absolutely that it would be cool in July with in game with some kids are gone off to school work or whatever you can't get everybody but if you could take the remaining like you look at the Wyoming and the remaining teams that were left in the just the area this is area schools to they're not doing any traveling there you know keep it all combine to grand rapids done this a little soccer schedule but if you took the grand rapids basketball teams and he did the same thing and he did a double elimination tournament like you know of an end of it you know it after for the July weekend weather talked it up in and you didn't do fans and in you did it in a way where it could be social distancing their it's just and it's not done by a school it's not done by Michigan has got a lot of association so the legalities of things involved are taken away their games are played at schools it would probably have to be through you know court house or MBA or one of those situations where you can pull it off that would be awesome for teams like yourself I'll be running yeah that would be great right tops cross started to you know let that the way to get the kids to have some clothes some clothes from crozier memory letter in the course we like a lot of things about that would've ended up nicely but at least at least now well when it comes down to sports to code red clay into Vander clay runs a Wyoming high basketball program joining us here on the huge show across Michigan it's really it it what you're looking at baseball in there talk about coming back into June for the July week they're spread out the players there's not too much contact outside of you know you slide in the second or third home or maybe a collision at first outfielders are spread out right dugouts they might extend it and keep guys spread out early but the sports that don't have a lot of contact and I'm talking from youth sports may have the best chance of coming back earlier than others yeah yeah I can see that first of all does that we we clean up quick and we we actually still have you know we have a summer schedule souls at this time we haven't cancelled anything yet for our basketball program so we'll have to see but like I said we were we were looking forward to start practice on April thirteenth the world is looking at the at the best case scenario you have to have to overrule drive you crazy code yeah it will it will wear on you if you if you watch the debates on Twitter and Facebook AD in the nine thousand cable and satellite channels it will drive you insane yeah you know I listen the doctor a granola for metro health university of Michigan health first day we had a case of Michigan he was in my studio here and end of his our with us I said okay for everybody listening.

"Favorite people admit Michigan but at the top of the, list or a couple of doctors at Northwood University the president of northwood Dr Keith pretty on the other end. Of our, line. Duct, pretty good morning to you good morning Dr Frank we sure. Appreciate, the opportunity. To be. With you this morning well thank you appreciate that and senior vice president director of the McNair center for. The advancement of free enterprise and entrepreneurship at northwood you've. Heard, him on our show many, times before. Dr Tim. Nash back with us again Dr Nash good morning My honor sir. Log, ashes to you my friend, long ashes. To you Ingredients to you thank you very. Much I appreciate that it's good to have you both. On the show, you've got a big weekend. Coming up at bay harbor this Saturday is is your annual economic symposium let's start with Dr pretty. On, on this and we'll be gathered there and the purpose of it, well the purpose of it is to share the philosophy. Of Northwood University our belief in free markets and free enterprise and entrepreneurship this is the twelfth year that. We've put this symposium on at at bay harbor in north west Michigan it's obviously a time of the year when when a lot of, our friends of the university, are up in that corner of the state enjoying our great natural resources and it's. An opportunity, for them to hear from from esteems professionals throughout the years last year we had former congressman Dave camp, talking, on his thoughts on. What tax, reform might look like And it was amazing to. Me how everything being said. At that event came. True later that. Fall and so this year we we have our. Attorney general the state of Michigan Bill Schutte and Bill. Is is is going to talk about the. Economic of Michigan something that he obviously has a great interest in I would say so as if. He, is elected governor that that'll be number one on his list economic, future of Michigan but it sort of dovetails into something. Else that the doctor Nashes involved in and and that's the economic outlook for the state in the chamber. Study the Michigan chamber study which will be coming out officially at the end of September but you have your monthly economic outlook that has, been released and it's I, gotta tell you I read through it Dr nationally it's looking pretty good yeah I. Have to tell you the the US and the Michigan economy are literally firing on all cylinders the USC Economy has a very strong GDP growth if you look at the last four. Quarters it's over three percent, we're getting back to the. Strong average growth that we have, in the post World, War Two era in the US in Michigan Michigan, was in the top twenty in terms of GDP, growth last year in the top six in per capita GDP growth west you're a across the country, state by state and, so when you're looking at the Michigan economy there are a lot of very bright to go along with the US economy as we see these numbers those of us who, don't do this for a living like Docker nationally we hear. About economic growth over four percent and GDP growth being that high and, the second half of, two thousand seventeen seeing it grow. At three percent put. These, numbers in perspective for me well when we hear these numbers what do they actually mean in layman's. Terms well If you if you look at it Frank for Michigan is you and I've talked before the first decade of. The twenty first century many referred to as the lost decade and if you if you look at GDP growth, from two thousand, and two to two thousand ten Michigan average. Negative one percent growth we had literally lawn net, fifty thousand people and the the economy of the state of Michigan turned around. And is moving in a, dramatically improved position if you look at the national economy from the end. Of World War Two to the late two thousand nine the US economy average three point two five percent GDP growth from two thousand nine to two thousand. And sixteen we have just over one. Point, nine percent growth so we're, moving in the right direction both statewide and? Nationally And when you think about that four point one percent the last quarter over three percent for the. Last year and you compare that to an average of one point nine percent for the previous eight years what, we're saying is we are creating dramatically, more jobs better jobs companies are much more profitable and that's good not. Just for wages and bonuses certainly, over the long. Term but it's a lot of people, forget about this Frank It's so important for pension funds an. IRA when you think about how well the stock market, has done, the Dow Jones industrial average, was up almost, twenty four percent last year I, a little slower this year, but it's an annual page right now over five percent And Dr pretty these are. Things, that. Are discussed quite regularly in the classrooms at northwood as well and and they vote well for those who are studying at your various campuses, for for the future and, and the creation of new businesses and go out in the. Market and seek jobs right well. Absolutely Franken mean we have a a. Small percentage of our students that are studying true economics under Dr Nash and are going to become economists. And they're very excellent students but all of our students are going to be business leaders they're going to be running businesses they're going to create their own businesses they need to know and understand the macro trends drive the economy and win invest how to invest effectively and and this kind of information is regularly shared in our classroom that actually the purpose of the. McNair center. Is share economic data with our, students and to have them see the direct relationship between Economic growth and entrepreneurship all right a quick break here in our symposium on economics on the Frank Beckmann show with doctors Keith pretty Tim Nash from northwood and then we'll continue in a moment Message and data rates may apply earning your degree from one of the top business schools in the country? Might sound impossible to fit into your workload but what if there were, a business, degree,.

"The button in the game is that did it sappi wherever it all the button now did just the of the game itself no court i just want to check nobody the little knob on the top of the game gave had on board and was a little knob on top and you could increase the speed of the player right and the intensity of the jiggling of the board would if him could still by those i'm sure they're avila bob that i'm went to amazon you could he and rappleye yeah just put it in electric football they were a ball but i hated that you couldn't throw until they got to new quarterback where you just you can afflict the they had like a plastic arm and it was always cocked and then they had the football with wealth so so the runpass option was in ah now when ob shen and the have a lotta rump sessions as our you know businesses place a real high premium on people who can approach their work with that cata mindset though uh entrepreneurial who can think around corners outside the box no one to take calculated risks on opportunity within all the ambiguity out there in the business world he didn't do all of that you're much more likely to succeed whether you got your own company that you're running or you're working for somebody else but what are you get that cata foundation let me suggest northwood university that's where north woods all business curriculum is talked by faculty who have real world experience their successes in the business world the environment it northwood it feels a lot less like a classroom more like a dynamic workplace and northwood graduates just thrive in that she had northwood you are encouraged to follow your true north defined success on your terms follow that in ternal compass that we all have it'll guide you and feel your success down the road and best of all northwood produces results because nearly all of their graduates are employed upon graduation and one third a third of the graduates guanda own all or part of a business where will your true north lead you why not struck by visiting north would dock eu.

"That dmc and northwood university once again from the chevrolet display here's guy while this procedure will not satisfy everyone on both sides it's a way forward i'm confident that we can get the sixty votes in the senate for a dhaka bill and now there is a real pathway to get a bill on the floor and through the senate it is a good solution and i will vote for it but that way four would have been impossible had there not been a group of twenty lawmakers from both sides of the aisle moderates who cobbled together this path forward to february eight and part and parcel of that was trusting uh senate majority leader mitch mcconnell to do what he said he was going to do which is to have a vote on daca one of those congressmen on the democratic i should say senators on the democratic side who was essential in this with the group of twenty with senator gary peters who joins us this afternoon senator i think a lot of folks w i'd like to see some bipartisan progress so congratulations on this well thank you and i and you're right they're renewed to come together in of i apart choir i was happy to be part of that group are when it looked as a hoax simple you are talking to each other would you simply unacceptable and we've got together grip pillows roughly half republicans half democrats and i will fail is great to be part of that group because everybody checked all the political rhetoric at the door on uh came down roll up their sleeves and set okay how do we uh fix this impasse that we are asked we have to open up the government simply irresponsible not uh have a functioning government thud we have some issues that we have to address let's do a practical common sense way but what really change because books in a number of publicans were already saying look you have our commitment that we need to fix daca you know that we know so what really change the discussion in the.
