James Spencer Unpacks the Inspiring Legacy of DL Moody

"Were talking about DL moody with the head of the president of the DL moody center doctor James Spencer, so you were just talking about on his deathbed in Northfield, Massachusetts, he is divvying out response to so he knows he's dying. He knows he's dying and he has this great quote and he said, I've always been an ambitious man. Non ambitious to leave you with great wealth, but with a lot of work to do. And so he's passing on to his kids and his nephews and nieces, the different ministries that he wants them to do, these things that he's built. He's leaving that legacy to them and asking them to shepherd it after his death. And did they? To some degree, yeah. I think we see some departure with the Northfield seminary in Northfield mount hermon. They became rather secularized, fairly quickly. But early on, there was a movement amongst moody's friends to give to build a $3 million endowment so that the kids wouldn't have to do all the fundraising and they could just administrate the school. And so there was a good time there after moody's death where these institutions continued to do exactly what DL moody intended them to do. As I said, moody church and the moody Bible institute obviously kind of carried on that legacy far far more effectively across a number of different years.

James Spencer Tells Us About the D.L. Moody Center

"I'm privileged right now to speak with doctor James Spencer. He's the president of the DL moody center. Did you know there was a deal in moody center? I want to talk about that. I want to talk about DL moody. And I want to talk at some point about doctor James Spencer's new book called Christian resistance, learning to defy the world and follow Christ. James Spencer, welcome. Thanks. Yeah, thanks for having me. I was excited about the idea. I've been up to the moody center, which is in Massachusetts. Where exactly in Massachusetts? So we're western Massachusetts right on the border of Vermont and New Hampshire. And most people don't know this is there. This is an amazing historical site. When I was there, I was blown away actually. Yeah, most people if they know DL moody, they know him for his Chicago work, and the moody church in Chicago and the moody Bible Institute of Chicago or more enduring institutions to sort of bear his name. But he actually lived most of his life in Northfield, did a great deal of ministry there from Northfield. And so yeah, our role is to preserve those historic buildings there on the property, as well as running a digital archives project. So we're preserving his letters and papers or letters and papers that talk about deal movie.

"From OPC online a ministry of old pez baptist church in Northfield, Minnesota, and I'm here today with brother Andrew besse. And we are going to talk about some plans that we have upcoming plans, actually, that we have for a European evangelism tour. And there's a lot of things that go into that. So we're going to try to explain that why in the world is pastor Cooley and brother. Why are they headed over to Europe and what are the objectives that they have to go to Europe? You know why are you going to Europe? Some of you might ask that. What are you looking for a vacation or something? Is that why you're going? Well, actually, we're going for work. Number one, we're going to preach the gospel and we're going to be a blessing to others. Number one, I want to go to Europe and I want to preach the gospel. I believe government have us to do that. And there's plenty of places that we can go over there that we already have set up to go over there. So number one, if you were to ask me pastor Lee, why do you want to go to Europe? I want to go there to preach the gospel. There's many places over there Scotland, for instance, is a place that we have already lined up to preach with some brothers on the street over there.

"Gas expansion project. What were some of the highlights? Yeah, show getting a 9.375% piece of what's called Northfield south. This is the second phase and a massive gas LNG production capacity expansion plan that Qatar has been undergoing. And this comes just three months after Shell signed a deal for a piece of Northfield east. That was the first phase of this project underscoring the close relationship between Shell and Qatar energy seemingly ongoing. Two things that really stood out to me I was there at the press conference yesterday. One sad cherry dog hobby, the CEO of country energy and also the energy minister saying that somebody buyers had already finalized supply agreements with Qatar energy before that gas supply NFS is expected to come online in 2027. The first sage expected to come online in 2026, we hadn't seen a lot of agreements there. Number two, Ben van burden, the outgoing CEO of Shell. Saying he has actually positive expectations optimistic expectations about what may happen with the gas plan for Europe that it might be both positive for markets, as well as consumers, obviously this is a hot story and I think we're going to hear a lot more about this in the coming weeks. So thank you for that. That's what Fox found in the kind of financial center in Doha. I want to stay with the region and get to earnings because they continue to come through in the gulf with one of the region's largest lenders, Sally national bank, missing estimates on third quarter profit golf stock exchanges have offered refuge in a broadly negative global equity backdrop with positive single digit returns for the year so far. Let's bring in R three and the director of investments that show asset management. Audrey welcome back to the program just to start off then with the Saudi national bank, a bellwether really for the sector, the bank itself is quite positive. But the reality is that the numbers miss estimates, how do you reconcile the two? The estimate miss was not huge, which it was 4%, three to 4% on the market for us. It was about 2%. But the big takeaway to me, Yusuf is margin contraction, right? We've been talking about margin stories. And it does look like the pace at which the interest rates have gone up this year has been detrimental to banks margin. It's possible there's a shift in the consumer's behavior in the depositors behavior. People depositors are moving from sticky time deposits, sticky demand deposits, which is not interest bearing to interest bearing time deposits. So the bank has to pay a bit more for these deposits, which is possibly what is showing up in the margins as well. But already, where are we in terms of rate rises? We're now in this debate about whether the fed pauses. We look at cyborg ever, ever increasing levels on cyborg. So you're going to have this conflict between the margin story that you talk about because of inflation versus nims. How does that stack up for you? We have to be very mindful going into next year manners because it is very important to know the shift in the consumer's behavior. It's also very important in recent times, most of the Saudi banks, the asset side of the majority provides a B 15 to 20 years given the mortgage that they have been like accumulating. While on the depot on the liabilities, I did get short dated as depositors moved to time deposit, which is typically less than one year. So banks have to be super mindful about this asset liability mismatch. They have to manage this risk. They have to go out and issue new bonds, which will come at a higher cost, which means there could be a possible margin squeeze going into next year as well. We're counting down to the World Cup. I know you're going to go and watch some of the games, at least that's what I'm hearing. Just in terms of investors looking to get into the Qatari stock game, how should they be positioning on the field? It's kind of losing up it shine, I use it. We have seen it. A lot of foreign investors that actually taking their profits. Numbers so far, banking numbers have not been very good in my, in my view. Q and B was exceptional, but cbq CBO was we saw not so great numbers. And my key takeaway for banks numbers in Qatar was weakening of lending growth, which is not pacing well, PMI is also if you look at the ground PMI is actually normalizing to 50 from 65 levels. So over overall, I think a lot of people would be taking profits from whatever positions they've taken before. I'm in shock, arty. You've committed, you've committed an act of treason on Dubai. UAE real estate has a lot of headwinds. RT, this is a big call. He called in the top of the property market. Why are you making a statement like that? Because that's monster. No, actually I think all of us know about this market knows about it. Interest rates are going up and there's a strong dollar is a high inflation. I think all of us as a portfolio manager and a fund manager, I have to really position myself in real estate because it's a great sector to be. It is everything is stopping. But having said that, we have to be mindful of the fact that rates are going up, inflation is also higher. But having said that, the good thing about Dubai market is the predominantly cash dominated market. And a lot of regulation, the Visa regulation that has actually emerged in recent times, especially the golden Visa rule. Kind of outweighs the risk of a strong dollar. So a lot of people would still want to be invested in real estate as a first time property buyer as a second time invest in investment buyer. Irrespective of where dollar is. But having said that, you can not take totally out the headlines headwinds that are real estate sector has going into 2023. I mean, the thing is, it's all good until the cash starts to evaporate. And a lot of these high net worth investors get commander calls from other parts of the portfolio around the world. Just in terms of where there is still an opportunity because I just want to get to the IPO announcement as well from empower the last or one of the last in a series of government efforts to list these companies from sort of the government portfolio, good or bad, positive negative. Empire is really a great company. It's one of the Dubai's largest distinct cooler, 80% market share in Dubai. It is about 50% operational. So obviously you have a huge upside as far as operational leverage is concerned. It's a very stable cash company, very stable business. I think the key would be the valuation use of

"In alabama my wife and i have two sides to our business one is catering in the other is full service restaurant. We started these businesses three years ago and they are debt-free with cova still prevalent. We have taken a significant hit with low. Sales supply chain issues and staffing problems. My wife ties her identity. And self worth to the success of this business. But i would be glad to close it down. She wants to take a loan to keep us. Afloat and i'm not in agreement with this plan should hold on and struggle and even go into debt. I know the is no. But how can i do my spouses against me and afraid of the future. Well there's a lot going on here a lot. I mean the obvious. Is you and your spouse needed. Golden state page regardless of what you do and you know adam that we're we're never going to tell you to take out a loan But even if you don't take out a loan and even regardless of what path you take with a business you still need to get on the same page with your spouse you and your wife page vision. Get to the root of what her fears are what she's struggling with and so on the other thing is just from a business standpoint. I can't help but want to dig into that and go okay. What's the real problem. Yeah you may be having some struggles in yes some of it is covert but is there a way to say okay. We're going to maybe shut down the restaurant go all in on catering or maybe we're going to downsize a little bit scaled back to where because we staffing issues we're gonna do. Just the pieces of we can do ourselves or yeah i i just i like to problem solve but sometimes when you're just sad or scared or overwhelmed It it feels bigger than it is. It feels more impossible than it is actually put that on instagram today. You know sometimes when you're overwhelmed. Things just feel bigger scarier and more impossible than they actually are. I wonder if some of these are not very fixable problems. Adam that if you could fix these problems the business could do better. The sales would improve. You don't have to take out a loan. Obviously which we're not gonna tell you to do and you and your spouse can on same page for the vision You know and obviously she didn't he doesn't need to be attached to it but as a business owner you know this day like you can't totally emotionally separate yourself from the success of the business because it is your baby. There's an aspect of it. That's that's healthy and then you don't want it to be will my sole source of identities. Here we know that. So it's a lot. It's a lot going on. I feel like in this question. You know it's unhealthy to not tie some of your identity and some of your Self worth to your business. Because you're putting yourself into it into completely detached from that. Make you a psychopath. You care and so you actually care about it. And it's it's my thing it's like something. I poured a lot into so it'd be unhealthy to do that. What i don't like hearing is she ties her identity and so forth to the success of the business. So what you have to do. Is you have to back yourself up and say okay. There are some things in this that i can control for those things. I'm going to time my some of my self worth and some of my identity to it. And i'm gonna get my budding gear and i'm gonna push stuff around and make it happen because i care right Then there's things you can't control you can't make people come to work in the restaurant business right now when they're being paid to sit at home by the stupid federal government everywhere you go high end low end restaurants and anything that service industry is struggling with labor shortage because they're sitting at home until the federal government stops that i mean that's just. That's not something you'd caused. So i'm not gonna if i'm you i'm not gonna go. Oh i did something wrong. I feel bad about me. I can't get labor and so we have to scale this back to the labor that i can get which is me and the right and and whatever else i mean. How many kids. we had. Whatever we're we're all going to be in here working. But i can't make anybody else work And i can't make a supply chain stuff. Be right right. i can't make. I mean we're we're fighting scratching these paper people. There's a paper shortage. Now get these books out. Your books are in coleman's book and we've got book scheduled for january. I'm buying paper form now. Because i know that we got a supply chain problem so but i can't say oh there's a paper shortage and so i feel bad about me. Northfield there paper shortage right now. I don't need to feel bad. nothing had do. My identity is not tired of that so the it gets real cliche but sometimes pieces of something after die for something to grow or even the whole thing dies for something to grow back where this much manure. There's plenty opportunity to grow. That's for sure. And we've had the same thing around here kiddo. I mean we've been pivoting so much. I feel like i'm just chasing a dog chasing its tail Changing stuff and moving things around how we deliver products and you know what a book tour used to look like what it looks like today. There's not one now we do it. All virtual Because the people in new york of lost their ever loving minds in the media world What they want us to like put our first born in a vault or something just to go see them and it's just like you. People are nuts. Forget it in so no. You're not going to extract my dna for me to come into your studio lost dadgum months so we have to. We have to adjust and pivot the whole thing and so I think that this is god whispering to your wife to get this business in. It's proper perspective within her psyche. Because it's gonna kill her if it succeeds and it owns her. It'll ride her into the grave if it fails and owns her. It'll rot her into the grave so she's got to get back on top of it and start owning it. There's nothing wrong. We're we're confirming that you should care deeply we're confirming that it should hurt your feelings that you that your business that you build his failing to do to nothing that you did wrong. I mean you got government. Interference you've got economic interference labor shortages and supply chain shortages. You did nothing wrong. It hurts your feelings and you agree that as bologna would say yeah and you know all of that is is normal but i think this is the opportunity to not take out a loan but instead to decide who owns what does the business on her she owned it and if she owns it she close part of it. I own this. I don't wanna close any out. It's hard open. But i will close it and then i'll still be here. I'll still be here..

I was trying out a system. I was reading about online. That did not work out then. I used my own system. And i am. I got most of my money back but not all of your own system. Yeah which is what. Modifications the west coast. I'm west coast. I modified the system. I was using that. I read about online. I feel like roulette systems totally kochta. Evidently they are like blackjack systems. I can understand that but roulette. It's an individual spin every single time z. For kochta system modified for people who are scared to bet a large amounts of money is the system. Where when you lose you double your bet and then if you lose again you double that that. If you lose again you double at six thousand dollars i mean. Have you not learned anything since working here. I did i did. I did hear craig on the air prior to me going there him saying. Don't chase your losses. And i was down like four hundred dollars in roulette. Offer me like i'd never. I don't like the bet and i was like I really could just grab another four hundred break even here but i did not try that so he learned but there was a debate over. You know what is down big. What isn't big. If i said i was down big in atlantic city. What amount of money would that need to be a thousand dollars. If rouse was forty dollars. I thought four hundred dollars on. Consider down big just. Because i don't like to lose money. Yeah i mean it's it's significant but if you if you went out of your way to tell you were down big i would think a thousand dollars but four hundred not good. I'd be pissed down four hundred dollars. That's four hundred bucks. That's a great. Dinner is what that is in then. New down four hundred and then you go to dinner those normally down six hundred basis that porterhouse that you gina lake not cheap. Yeah right well. He's a piece of big swing. There's some fun. This is never done in that place. Like i saved the leftovers from the room service pizza and put it in the fridge and then had it like for lunch thing which i don't think ever happens. I just couldn't not do that surprise. You didn't sleep on the pizza box outside that that you could put an entire football team in that suite that we have. Yeah it was unbelievable ridiculous sitting down first thing watching fox news. Few it's awesome. That's why he was uncomfortable. When the car bombs came he was of course right. Where about ten percent of the country's gonna get miami new england okay and then for fox late me see fox late fox. Late has two games as well. They have green bed world liens and they have denver at the giants denver and the giants you know. Obviously in the mid. It's kinda like the midwestern states shower where the bronco fans all right so it looks like it's about an eighty twenty split that green bay new orleans will be seen in about eighty percent of the country and denver new york giants about twenty. Of course. I mean that. Green bay new orleans games are going to be a very popular game. Rogers all the drama in the off season and everything else can wait. Let's go to vinnie cliff clinton. What's going on vinnie radio so out there. Thanks man. what do you got today. I real quick giants stuff. That bill fan calls up and says he doesn't have you know a fire Competitive fire is jones. "Here is the host of in the garden author of year round indoor salad garden published by chelsea green. How's that for a promo peter. Peter burke well thank you joel as very you remind people every now and then well. The day is coming up when i will go through that. Just send everybody off into the gardening winter world and but right now i wanna talk about well a list of say twelve things to get ready for fall but before i start that we have about six weeks left to maybe forty two days A frost free days and so as the season winding down. We approached the harvest season. Well actually it's not the harvest season. Actually because for gardeners harvest ending season implanting season really start in april. Go right through to november unlike a farm. Where you you know you plan to crop. In the in the spring and you harvested in the fall. We are planting and harvesting all year. Round just to Well i mean all season long from about april to about november so let me restart by giving a list of end of the summer and fall checklist and number one on the list and i think i've mentioned it before. Do you have a call. She wanted to take that guy. Golly yes indeed well okay. We have a question about potato. O greenwich bob enorthfield. Who's on the line. Let's see please this button joel. And he definitely is on the line. Hey bob in northfield tower you today. Excellent what's going on oil so Years back i was told to shave your lease maple leaves. And that's why they've been using for my potato catch up and when they pop up through the years with two more light lease around. I ran out of the lease so my question is i got a farmer that has some okay and just put mulch around and then let the little tops. Keep your own and i. I know that sounds like a good idea. But my experience with multi as that is even if it's slightly decomposed as it is absolutely loaded lee weeds and grass seeds. You so if you put multi on you're bound to get a lot. I would prefer that you use something like that straw. He can get a bail straw at one of our sponsors here. i know egg-laying and guys both have them and and some of the other sponsors have a bail is cautiously about. I don't know twelve fourteen bucks somewhere in that range. But it'll go a long way so i would recommend using straw number one number two If if you have access to shredded Newspaper that's another good one for mulch and Number three you could just use plain old every day peat moss if you if you have to have that so the the The mall ceva. I would stay away from but if you really careful with it and you pull it up after you harvest your potatoes and put it in the compost bin. Then you'd be okay but you'll see right away. The digital starts sprouting our grass and probably other other other weeds right away. Everything from dandelions to japanese. Not not we'd there and Just everything you can imagine so i. That's the only thing that i would hesitate But if you really careful and you pull it up when you do your potatoes and don't leave it in your garden bed then than you probably could use it.

"Know when i have you remember at the beginning of the year i said i was going to plant nestor. Cham's on the corners. I would cover up the and they've been really really pretty It does take little effort to train them to go up They wanna just sort of go out and around and wherever they wanna go but if you train them they go up very nicely so that worked out good in the miracles have been beautiful and the other day when i was picking the the college and the kale getting these wonderful whiffs of this the beautiful fragrance of the marigold was very very nice. Well my my biggest regret with regard to what mother nature does to attack my garden is that i just. Oh i miss pole beans. I have the. I love them. I always thought well of the edible varieties of course. I always thought the poll varieties of the beans. We're we're we're sweeter and and and better overall than the bush varieties whenever there was a chance but unfortunately the deer would eat at plant level. You know at that. There had level the the bush beans the the roma style bush means those are the flat pods on and those are the real tender ones They do have bush varieties of those non and they. They're they're really jewish. I love the bush variety of the purple beads. Ask kids like because once you steam them they turn green and miss villain that. When i make my dilly beans i i had the purple and yellow and all the rest of that but even so the purple ones turn green. They see you don't know but the yellow one station yellow. So when i was doing i was putting the yellow and green all the way around outside so they look kinda pretty what beans great waterbury farmers market. She said not one jar made it home. That's life that happens. That happens with just about anything i buy. Ask why i'd buy a big pizza for dinner. Little one for the car you know rather than open up the pizza box and tell my family. My god stole two-piece this box thing joel. We've got over but we've had a good time. I think so. Well we'll be having more garden discussion and checking in with you our listeners. With regard to what's happening in your garden. And of course peter here to answer your gardening question so i guess the bottom line is a peter that we will see everybody next week. Yup in the garden garden robot. Role gonna make this garden. "A little role playing here. All right, I'll be LaRussa you be You're mean. Okay. Come on up here. Take a seat. Sir. I just want to tell you I appreciate everything you've brought to this team so far. Thanks. We wouldn't be where we are today. Without you. I feel the same way especially if the injury to my good friend, a lawyer and my other good friend Louise Robert. And now with my other good friend, Jose Bre you out, and that being said there are ways we do things up here that you may not be accustomed to. And just like when you were late the other day. I'm sorry about that. Yeah, no way. Had a good conversation that there too. You don't have to like it. I'm sent my ways on three off. I know things are different today. But the way we do things here when I give you the take sign, I'd really appreciate if you would just take the pitch. And I'm here to help you okay? And to back our team, So we have the big picture in mind. I get it. Skip. It was my mistake but not listening to you. Look, this has been a rough ride for May. I've spent the last nine years toiling at the minor league system. I thought I was gonna get my shot a couple of years ago and never materialized. Maybe was something that I did, but, you know, maybe I just don't have a position. But I've worked really hard And sometimes when I get this opportunity, I'm so gung ho about producing for this team. Sometimes I just I just want to hit the ball out of the park and I just got it. Got the resonator germinate. Er I don't want you to lose that. Never lose that train of thought or I don't want to neuter you. I just want you to me. It means I do not want to put any sort of a limit here on you. I want you to continue to do what you're doing a restrictor plate. But there are times when I'm going to put it up for the good of the team. And you do your thing. And when it's time for me to tell you, Ah, couple of things just just go buy it. We're on great. Keep doing your thing, kid. Thank you, Smith. And then you know you want to call Rocco Baldelli and say Look, I just had a conversation with with him way set it down. All right. Whether you appreciate or not, I set him straight. No no press conference. Known clueless No. Oh, the twins through him. No big deal. It's all it is. Is that right? Yeah. That's all it could have been. I'm with you. But I do like in the process of that exchange. I think you acknowledged it, and I acknowledged it. That the manager is going to ask certain things and the player needs to buy. Buy There don't have to like it yet. You don't have to totally change and I'm not going to show you up. Skip and I would appreciate as a professional. You don't show me and I'm in your corner. Who call you clued in a press conference trying to my good buddy Lucas Giolito didn't say anything about you when you didn't go get him. That's right. And That was pastor when Foster was left hanging out there like you. He didn't say anything bad about you. And your mean. I was the guy who didn't know the rule about the runner at second base and I filling this sent out Hendricks to run for himself, and we didn't Bus TA shoes. So do you remember the time when I put Nick Williams in batting fifth and benched you for that game, even though you were recalled Scamp, it's your call, But then we d f a Nick Williams two days later, that's Rick's call. Let's not mine. I don't want to be involved in any. Remember when we send Billy Hamilton to the plate when we were down chasing three run, I gotta you know, we were looking for a single. Okay if I go to the bathroom now. Yeah, you could go urinate er Time in Northfield. You're on ESPN 1000. What's up time, eh? Why? Well, I don't go anywhere here. Wait. Trey, you're on ESPN 1000. What's up? Hey, I like the role play. But you remember LaRussa speak Spanish. So I like the Noto Spanish word for neutered, huh? I think he would. Tommy. Tommy, you wanna has? What if the little Spanish work that's true? Yeah, You're right. I struggled. English Drake. Hey, castrato, castrato castrato. No local drama mean today E o same thing. Yeah, I think so. I thought wave also had something to do with that. But anyway, um, one of the real quick I was busy. I do have a life so I can't listen to what? I'll serve you all the time, but a man chooses. No, no, wait, wait, wait, wait. Just pick a single is everything. I came in late, but what I did was went to the APP and started from the F The first show that was already up on that happened and I caught up to you by four o'clock, huh? That's a good thing. But you have a commercial that what do you fast mourning for your past morning? Throughout the good? No. No commercials. No commercials on the app so I can catch up to the live show, Okay? If I was, you know, just just give you a heads up anyway. I love listening to this conversation, and I was kind of, you know, worry about when Jose went out and then how they responded that night. And then I was really pissed off last night about their loss, but then how they responded today when I start seeing things show up on the field. That's what I'm I get concerned. I think I think I think when you guys sit down half when you come across the roofs and ask you about this, I'm gonna think I'm thinking that he had to say one thing. Toe. Where outward appearance but I think you said one thing to the team, but I'm I am concerned about that. It wasn't my choice or higher and I do have concerns and I think he's finally learning his team. But I'm I'm more concerned. I'm not happy. I'm so happy about how this team respond that anything even withdrew his blunders, Members blunders and how they responded the next day, the other day Circle Every game that we just talked about from after the Hendrix came after the foster game after the Nick Williams think every time there's something.

And prime minister's questions from London. We've hear first from House Speaker Lindsay Oil. I need to speak of this morning I had meetings, his ministerial Connie's and others, in addition to my duties in this house, I have further such meetings later today. Very Sandra. Thank you, Mr Speaker. Over the last week, thousands of people across frankly, great Park concert Northfield have done what's been asked of them to go and get the test because of a small number of South African barren cases in the constituency. Would the prime minister join me in thanking Dr. Just invite Money and cancel the Simon morale and burning of City Council for everything they've done to be able to scale up mass testing across frankly, great Park on encourage anyone who hasn't had a test so far to get one at one of the designated sites. Yes, indeed. Mr Speaker. I thank my honorable friend for raising if I indeed I joined him in thanking the NHS staff who are scaling up testing's the search testing in the way that he describes on. I'll encourage everybody in the area and indeed throughout the country to get it together that Scene where you're asked to do so. Let's go bleed of the opposition. Here. Stop! Mr Speaker. Can I begin by thanking everybody involved in the vaccine rollout with now vaccinate. I think 12.6 million people were on course to vaccinate the first four priority groups by the end of this week. That's a truly amazing achievement. The prime minister confirmed today that the government will extend business rate relief beyond March. 31st. I'm afraid dresses began and daddy him Johnny in praise of the vaccine rollout, which is indeed, I think, attribute Toe the NHS staff and Thea Army volunteers, many, many others on gone his point about the extension of visit rate business relief here. Knows that this governor's committed to supporting businesses and people are lively hoods, a threat the pandemic that is what we will continue to do so, But he should wait until the budget for the chancellor to explain exactly what we're gonna do. Mr. Speaker, I think found answer was that the promised can't give an answer yet, But hundreds of thousands of businesses are affected by this. And the trouble is Mr Speaker, that businesses don't work A slowly is the prime minister. They need an answer now. The British Chamber of Commerce is business is simply can't wait until the march budget. Let me try another vitally important question for businesses and for millions of working people can the prime mister confirmed today that the furloughs scheme will be extended beyond April? Mr Speaker, I think most people in this country are well that we're going through a very serious pandemic in which rates of infection have Bean certainly brought down thanks to the efforts of the rich people, I think also Members of this house of familiar with the notion that in just a few days, we will be setting out a road map for the way out of this pandemic road map that I hope the right honorable gentleman. His colleagues will support their their supporters. We know these tend to be a transit everything Mr Speaker, one we had in the next week. We don't but he won't have to contain himself for very long kissed on Mr Pickle. Eddie let the promised drinks were secret. He can take decisions for himself. He doesn't need to leave everything to the 11 minutes. If I don't promote prime minister, I'd say two businesses will support you now will protect jobs now because the C B I the Federation small businesses. The institute of directors on this chamber of commerce have all said the same thing they all say promised that they can't wait until the budget The promise to make disagree with me, But he's actually disagreeing with businesses. Why does the prime mister think he knows better? The British business? Mr Speaker. I think that most business people that I've talked. I've talked to a great many in the last 12 months would agree that there is no government around the world that has done more to support business, wrapping our arms around business. And actually, I'm delighted to hear this enthusiasm for business from the from the Labor Party when they stood on a manifesto to destroy capitalism, the last.

"When you own a dive shop people routinely either stop by or call us to see if we're interested in buying their old scuba gear or they have equipment that they used many years ago and went to try to get back into diving and wonder if we can service it. Well that's a whole different discussion than where i wanna go today. Many times the gear that they bring in is from decor one of the original five. Us manufacturers scuba diving equipment in the united states. We've already covered two of those five here on scuba shack radio voice and health ways and i'll get to the other to swim. Master stivers down the road today. We're going to talk about decor. The davidson corporation was founded in nineteen fifty three by samuel davidson junior. Sam took the da from davidson and decio are from corporation and put them together to form decor i read somewhere online at sam patented the name and even gave the patent number three dot one two eight four eight one. Why tried to find that specific patent and couldn't find that where he patented the name but that number came up with something called a safety float that was submitted by samuel davidson junior filed in nineteen sixty. One so interesting. So how did sam davidson get interested in scuba diving. Well sam richard klein who started health ways was also in the united states marine corps during world war two he was stationed on guam and it said that he had gotten hold of some japanese goggles and started to explore underwater after the war. His interest in exploring underwater continued back then. Getting reliable. scuba equipment wasn't easy. So sam hooked up with an old neighborhood friend named bob olsen and they decided to build their own double hose regulator well somewhere along the way a buyer from montgomery ward department store chain found out about the regulator and purchase ten later. They update to three hundred. Sam had a business. He borrowed ten thousand dollars from his mother and got rolling by nineteen fifty five decor was producing what they called their dial breath. Double hose regulator sam along with another engineer while he mitchell continue to work on regulator development along with other scuba diving equipment from my review of the old decor catalogs. It looks like they didn't introduce their first. Single hose regulator the decor dart until one thousand nine hundred sixty two although they had developed earlier some say four years before sports ways introduced. There's but as a as we've seen with health ways and dick anderson's work a lot of folks who are innovating at this time. One of the ways. I like to research. these early. Manufacturers is look at their old catalogues. The cg forty-five website has a lot of reference material. Along with these old catalogs the earliest decor catalog that i was able to review from thousand nine hundred sixty one. That was the same year that see honda ended. The catalog was a whopping four pages. Long it had there are three double hose. Dial breath regulator for eighty two dollars. They complete single tanks system for one hundred and forty four dollars and a double host set up for doubles. Set up for two hundred and twenty nine. You could pay an extra five dollars to get yellow tanks. The cadillac had one mask one snorkel and one set of things by nineteen sixty two their line expanded with the d one day corridor. Single hose regulator and a new are four dial breath double hose. Remember that patented safety float. Well it was in thousand nine hundred sixty two catalog over the next couple of years. They continue to innovate with the dart d. Two and a dart with ajay valve for three hundred psi reserve on the first stage they also had the clipper series double hose regulators c two and c three by nineteen seventy decor came out with yet another new regulator line the olympic series with the one hundred two hundred four hundred and eight hundred. The last catalog. I went through was from one thousand nine hundred eighty and decor was touting twenty-six years of diving innovation with a doubling of their space at northfield manufacturing headquarters and the installation of a hyperbaric chamber for regulator testing. Looks like nineteen eighty was the year. They introduced what they touted. As a revolutionary regulator their decor pacer regulators pacer is short for positive air controlled equalizing regulator claiming to have totally balanced first and second stages with a remarkable point zero five inches of water. Cracking pressure wow. That's pretty low. They say they harnessed venturi with something called. Ventura matic something really innovation at this. Time was there microsoft Circuit dive computer. It looks like it took up. Most of your forearm with indicators for deco cent rate depth time readouts and more. It was quite a marvel for the time. Sam davidson passed away in nineteen eighty seven and sam's wife. Joan became ceo by nine thousand nine hundred ninety eight. Joan sold decor tomorrow's an overtime the decor named faded into our diving history. I did see a short article in two thousand five edition of sport diver and it was from nari and they indicated that they could no longer get replacement parts for decor regulators because the parts suppliers had destroyed their mold before they can move all of that to the marez a facility in palo italy. So that's a little bit of the history of sam davison junior the davidson corporation and decor one of the five original scuba equipment manufacturers in the united states.

Dr. Elaine Ingham, Soil Scientist

"This week. Cultivating places women's history month interviews gets to the very basics of horticultural work with soil. The soil world is integral foundational to the plant world. Since the nineteen eighty s mainstream academic soil science has been transformed into a search for biological discovery. It is a fundamental shift from a science that seemed blinded by the theories of the Green Revolution from the nineteen twenty s through the nineteen seventies. The Term Green Revolution refers to innovations intended to increase food supply around the world specifically through introductions of new often dwarfed sometimes genetically modified varieties of cereal grain crops developed for high yield along with introductions of synthetic fertilizers herbicides and pesticides often derived from the chemical byproducts of World War Two the Green Revolution asserted increased production of and reduced pest and disease damage to crops. Managed by these men made inputs over traditional agricultural methods. Beginning in the late nineteen seventies however more voices started questioning the long term results and benefits versus serious disadvantages of these methods. Many of the voices raised in opposition. Women's voices among them was Dr Elaine. Ingham Elaine's work in microbiology. At the Colorado State University for Collins in the nineteen seventy s through the nineteen eighties began illuminating. The incredibly complex living systems at work in healthy soil. Her work is strongly associated with the concept of a soil food web and in the beginning of this century. She is the founder of Soil Food Web Inc and she's here to share more about her work. Welcome Elaine thank you very much. I'm very honored to be here. So you have had a really long interesting career in which you have accomplished and articulated some really interesting. And seminal things for our field of interest Plant life here and how it relates to so much else. Can you describe for listeners? What does your work consist of right? Now especially as it relates to soil and plant life lane right now where. I'm still continuing to work on. What is the soil food web? How is it different in different? Parts of the planet given climate season changing weather patterns. Things like that. How do these organisms interact with each other to help? Plants grow or what are the conditions that results in the disease causing or not beneficial organisms winning out over the beneficial's all those stages of succession and so many people doesn't don't understand that it's the biology that pushes succession along at. What's really altering things so that next stage of plant life will succeed into that system and then of course. Those new plants communion alter the biology in the soil which sets the stage for the next stage of succession. So lots were of information yet to go and only really begun to scratch a surface soil. The MORE QUESTIONS. We answered the more questions. Come up I think is is so often the case so before we get into the technicalities of this big interesting wide world that you are studying take us back a little bit and set the scene for us of of where you grew up and the kind of journey of your work of the people in places in plants that grew into a person. For whom this would be your. Life's Focus Elaine. I grew up in Minnesota so the frigid northlands and I thought every place in the world had twenty five feet of snow in the wintertime. That was just how everybody else lived. It was a kind of a shock when I learned it was different than that so my father was a veterinarian At the University of Minnesota and he would take me into his laboratory. He took me because I was the only one of his offspring who was interested in laboratory work and I remember at the age of six years old. My father sat me down at a microscope. Wasn't quite sure what to do with me. I couldn't be running around the halls getting into trouble. So what is he going to do plops down in front of a microscope and says county coli so he showed me how to make the microscope slides and start counting and he wanted me to do twenty five fields and he figured that it would take me a long time to get twenty five fields. If he coli counted he was right. So a my first introduction to the microscope my father and I worked on all my science projects through the course of middle school and high school and I went off to college at Saint Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota Various Scandinavian Norwegian school. One at the top Pre Med schools in the United States. But I decided I did not want to go to medical school. I had met some of the people I worked as a In the heart hospital as a lab dishwasher during my senior year and discovered. I really didn't like those people. They were too con- focused on the wrong things. I wanted to stand how the world works. Not How you get the patient to spend the most money on the most expensive drugs and you know all of that. medical It was just an anthem. It to me so I decided to go to graduate. School went to Texas am where I worked in Marine Microbiology on the digest organisms in the digestive systems of oysters and freshwater mussels on started understand that you know science purports many ways the academic world reports that it knows everything we found all the answers. And so just ask me. I can answer all your questions and began to discover that that is absolutely not a case There's so much we don't know that it's overwhelming and the methodologies that people often use to try to collect the data and then the misinterpretations that they perform in explaining the world if if you take the material inside the digestive system of an oyster in played it out on a petri dish you're only going to find two or three species because we are so changing the the habitat think about the inside of an oyster versus In a medium in a plastic petri dish that you spread a point one meal of choice tres digestive system and and how many microorganisms well? I looked through the microscope at those organisms and I noted that there were literally a hundred different species of bacteria that I could see a couldn't identify them to genus and species. But I could see there. Were one hundred different things that were totally different. Egmore Doing very different things and so I figured I should be seen that many little colonies coming up on my petri dishes and I was seen one or two. And so how can you use that method? Petri plate methods. Do not allow you to get an inkling of what the diversity is out there in the real world and yet that was the standard of microbiology. That's what you had to do to start the organisms in now. Fill in the blank. Whatever you want to write so there'd been a lot of work done on the ecology of different ecosystems that were just completely inappropriate. When it comes to understanding any of these
