"This week is Steve fratkin He is the president of Northern Trust wealth management They run about $355 billion in assets Previously he was CFO of all of Northern Trust and has been with the company since 1985 Let's talk a little bit about what you call goals driven wealth management Start out with what exactly is that Sure Goals driven wealth management at Northern Trust is the framework that we've devised to build personalized wealth plans for clients And it focuses on helping them achieve their individual goals with confidence It provides a big picture of their wealth and transparent steps on how to manage and optimize wealth over time So Barry one way to think about it is and then being a little bit facetious but just to make the point it used to be in this industry that the starting point for how money might be managed was a function of your outlook on the markets You think equities are going to go up et cetera so you allocate more to equities Goals driven wealth management comes at investing through a different lens The starting point is not so much our call on the markets though that will be important at some point Our starting point in goals driven is what are you and your family trying to accomplish Once we understand what you're trying to accomplish and the assets you need to accomplish it we can in effect back into how to deploy those assets in stocks bonds other asset classes to give you the best probability of achieving your life goals over time So it's really just a different starting point For how to think about creating an asset allocation that is most effective for you and your family So let's talk about that framework And again the question comes back How different is it for the ultra high net worth than for the merely wealthy or is there a lot of overlapping between the two different types of planning The process is really the same no matter where you are on the wealth spectrum You and your family have goals and whether you have a $1 million a 100 million 1 1 billion 10 billion or whatever the number is you have something you want to achieve over time You plan to live to age 90 or a hundred This is what you need to live in the style to which you want to be accustomed And we do a variety of work to figure out first of all are you asset sufficient meaning under reasonable scenarios Do I have enough if I steward it effectively to live my life the way I want to live it over time And that happens whether you have again whatever the number is $500,000 or 10 million The difference Barry comes in with the flexibility and options that you have as you create more wealth So the starting point is the same Understand your goals understand your needs and let's figure out an asset allocation to give you the best chance to get there What becomes different for people in the ultra high net worth space relative to the rest of us is that they can take advantage of more planning techniques They can take advantage of more techniques to optimize philanthropy They can take advantage of gifting to future generations and so forth And so the process is the same but as you accumulate more money in general you have more flexibility on some other things you can do One of the things that I kind of knew but I didn't realize it was this intense was the number of clients you see relocating to new states It's been a record volume Some of that's pandemic related Some of it predates the pandemic How does that challenge the planning process How different is it from state to state when it comes to things like tax planning You mentioned trust you mentioned philanthropic issues What happens when somebody picks up from one state and relocates to another state Clients relocating has always been with us If you look at Northern Trust history So one phenomenon we've always seen is migration from state to state That phenomenon is also impacted by state tax rates by a state tax considerations And so both because of the pandemic and for tax reasons and lifestyle reasons were continuing to see movement across state lines And so I think the message to urban planners is taxes do matter to people It's not necessarily the only factor but even affluent people will think through where do they want to be where do they want to live What environment do they want to be in And what's the tax impact for their.

"northern trust" Discussed on Bloomberg Radio New York

"Bloomberg radio My special guest today is Steve fratkin is the president of Northern Trust wealth management They run about $355 billion in client assets So we talked a little bit about alternatives earlier Let's address that a bit There seems to be a growing appetite for all manner of alternative investments given that stocks and bonds are all a little bit pricey Let's start with private equity What sort of demand is there from your clients for private equity And how do you guys respond to the question of potentially better returns in exchange for far less liquidity Sure Look investment has become much more granular over the decades And again just to be facetious large cap stocks versus high quality bonds 40 years ago Today clients think in terms of small cap mid cap large cap value international emerging markets private equity and thousands of flavors of private equity hedge funds same thing So in the quest for optimizing returns clients and their professional money managers in Northern Trust included have searched for different asset classes to combine together to give people the best chance to achieve their objectives Private equity clearly has been in the aggregate there are winners and losers in private equity but has been a asset class that has done well for many There are tradeoffs with private equity particularly in terms of liquidity But I would say amongst our clientele the appetite for private equity and private equity as a more normalized asset class continues to grow It's not the right asset class for every client But for clients who have the capacity the risk tolerance and so forth it definitely can play an important role in a client's portfolio And increasingly we're seeing more use of private equity today than we did say ten years ago What about venture capital or hedge funds to totally different entities from both each other in private equity What's the demand like for those products Demand exists for venture capital and for hedge funds as well Again the devil is in the detail not all hedge funds are created equally The fees that they charge the performance that they've delivered can differ substantially But there is again the same notion of I want to diversify my portfolio I want a range of options and so called alternative investments whether you call it private equity venture capital hedge funds seem to continue to be growing in appeal to our clientele What about crypto and things like blockchain and Ethereum There seems to be a lot of real interest in the space are you finding your client base is crypto curious I would say the demand for crypto is more muted amongst our clientele than some of what you read in the public press And that doesn't mean we have examples of clients who have invested in crypto and done exceptionally well right time But I would say in general if I had to caricature it I would say that crypto is still an evolving asset class that is misunderstood by many And I think most are treating it carefully And the ones that are making crypto investments are viewing it more as a More as a role of the dice than a rational Analytical view of what crypto is trading at today and what it's going to trade at tomorrow They view it as a bit of a role to dice They may jump in a little bit but they understand that what goes up can also go down So I would say amongst our clientele overall crypto is still not widely in use So we mentioned briefly market is a certainly price you than it was 5 or ten years ago How do you manage around stocks and bonds neither of which are inexpensive Yeah look I think for many of our clients the market does go up the market does go down And one of the great features of our the goals driven methodology that we use for clients is that we build a portfolio such that after a lot of analytical work to evaluate their goals and so forth That enables them to endure and not have to sell in a down market We create something that's called a portfolio reserve I would liken it to the moat around your castle Some people like a wide deep moat Some people need a narrower and less deep moat But think of that as high quality fixed income if the stock market goes down your bonds are still fine You can still pay your mortgage life is good You can wait until the market goes up or returns to normal So the one thing we know on behalf of our clients is markets go up and down And so you have to plan and prepare for that And so it's very difficult to know again using the COVID-19 example I think there are a lot of people who might have argued the markets are going to crash Everyone's working from home and we can't get essentials and people don't want to go to the grocery store and yet the market went up dramatically So we try and take a long stewarded view and help our clients plan and prepare themselves so that when the market does go down they can get through and not have to take adverse steps and sell in dire circumstance And that's been very helpful for our clients So in terms of forward return expectations does that and historically low bond yields high equity prices tend to suggest low returns going forward Does that work its way into the planning process or is that really more of an academic theory No it absolutely works its way into the planning process because our starting point is what needs does a client have over the near term for financial resources We have to make sure they can buy their groceries and pay their mortgage and we have to deploy assets against those goals But once in working with a client we figured out the right mix of assets to enable them to afford those goals over a reasonable period of time We then have to deploy the rest of the portfolio towards so called risk assets equities private equity hedge funds venture capital whatever the asset class And in so doing we have to bring our judgment about risk and return expectations for each of those asset classes So our view of asset classes and what they're likely to bring over the relatively short term is still an important part of the process So what do you tell investors who say you know I'm really not happy with my muni bond portfolio It's barely thrown off two or two and a half percent Investors are always seem to be looking for more yield how do you respond to that group of clients Yeah I think my response is really you have to remember what you're trying to do with that muni bond portfolio No one is saying it's a great high returning asset class But that's not its role Its role is to making this up Barry but generally the role of that muni bond portfolio is to provide you with certainty security confidence and not have to worry about the other part of your portfolio Let's just call that equities gyrating up and down So of course people want their muni bonds or their high quality fixed income to return as much as it can And it's our job to try and help people achieve that But I think you always have to come back to what role is this trying to play And for most clients it's trying to play a role of stability and reliability and consistency and that's the Paramount feature and in providing that consistency and stability and predictability They give up a little bit of return on that asset class But they're trying to get that elsewhere with their equities private equity and so forth Thank you Steve for being so generous with your time We've been speaking with Steve fratkin He's the president of Northern Trust wealth management If you enjoy this conversation well be sure and check out any of the other 388 prior "Sure the tour would like them to cover more. No not really. It was put on a plate of. Hey you know keith. Mitchell just birdied to inroad to get inside and all that but missed. It was actually three hundred. Sorry about that. I mean it just kinda goes to show you like oh. This should so overloaded already that like we. We just can't effectively tell that story too. Yeah yes seller shy good. Were a fan you know. And now it's it's time for whom we're gonna get into some to see stuff when it comes to edgy women's open but it and they're going to cover a lot of the events going into the fall so it's not a hard reset for them right now but it's time for them to seriously seriously reconsider how they present their television product because they took they took steps backwards when everyone else during ex challenging covert time periods took step forwards some drones. Today were awesome the no fans out there. They can do a lot more with the drones to so Yeah good stuff cleaning up on the men's side before we get to the women's open which we were planning to lead with today but It just turns out that Big tone had other plans in store for true black swan about i know. Yeah i just had change course a quick ryder cup checking. We've done a lot of ryder cup. Talk already of course presented by our friends at bmw global partner the ryder cup and a partner of ours. randy i believe. You saved your fill case. I don't i hope that wasn't your entire case That you're going to that. You're going to rest on but i'll i'll let that slide. Is anyone good ride for kids. Every time i tweet about it. People like seemed. Do i have a foregone conclusion. He's going to be on this team. And i'm just wondering if we even need entertainment conversation. You seeing his his data guy. Like like i you know. I just want to watch the best players. Like legitimately. just don't like he said it himself. You can't compete on like seventy percent of course is on tour. This is one of those courses. I think right. Yeah absolutely and like just don't my whole thing is just been like. I don't know why you pick it you cherry pick one weeks event as the that is what's going to tell the story for what's gonna happen on a completely different style golf course i. Didn't you know this week should not decide whether or not he should whether he should or shouldn't be on the team and the same way that last week should not have in that. His numbers don't even like really come close to entering the conversation and it's bad course fit everything i said last week i will triple down on a good. Just doesn't make sense in this time period. Where american gulf talent is prized deep. As it has been and there's a whole lot of other guys that fit the profile. I know he's saying all the right things and interviews and talking about how he talks about the team should approach the play and all that stuff but like it just doesn't add up and i'm sorry and do i think that there was a time when he would've made sense like two thousand eighteen on thai golf course ashore golf course that our guys had trouble finding the fairways on the playing style his players fit. Yes that's a good conversation to have somebody that changes up the team atmosphere. Yes that's good conversation to have. But i think we're also forgetting how easy. Us steamrolled everyone in two thousand sixteen at hazeltine when they set it up probably pretty similar to what they're gonna do it whistling straights when they had a huge talent gap and they made it. You know long. Put the pens and easy spots in the. Us routed them and they're going to try to do the same thing this time around. And i just don't think fits in that plan. So i mean i think if you're gonna kiss you got to pick like webb simpson right. Just because you're a abolishing distance up simpson's still better pick than yeah. That's okay instead of taking kids. You say you pick west. Oh yeah like. I don't dislike. I think he's i think he'd be a great locker guy and all that but i don't know i'm not going to get we're not yet up about it. We're not talking about to do is like a savant with. I heard people like oh. Yes speeds just a total bomber. I guess you should put him on. The team to like speech is one of the best players in the world like his is just like very average at hitting the ball. That's just a fact i know. For by by world-class yes. Yes yes yes of course like by professional golf standards but what he does have going for him as he's you know he's better than average phil but anyways we can we can. He's a dog at match play. I don't wanna take that away from him and you can't quantify that stuff but also like sometimes the stack the deck is stacked against you on certain courses. Yes so bryson's entering the long the long drive contests the day after the ryder cup. Which begins on the monday after the ryder cup. And we have to talk about bryson. It just puts me in such a bad mood at least addressing. The also didn't address the media this week. Continuing don't know. I can't get myself to irked up over that you know. I'm sure he's being paid. Or you know. Some sponsor relationship has gone to the world long drive. Do they drug test world long drive. I can't imagine that they do and they should. The ship also shown the pga tour. And i don't really think it's gonna take away from anything. He does it the ryder cup to you. I think it's either goes two ways. He there goes and shows up at this event and hits that equipment for the you know a different equipment of forty eight inch driver in whatever they use like one degree drivers and stuff on that with you know playing. He has built his swing to hit the ball really far. But how that fits into pga tour golf courses and professional. Golf is how he's built it and so he's either gonna show up and totally kind of winging at that event or he's gonna be training somewhat for that this month leading up to the ryder cup or the week of the ryder cup. I mean you know you you try to. I can't imagine you take an entire week off from that and then tries to show at the long drive..

"We went out to go to the specific. That's necessarily but that's a very reasonable like to make guy should have one last week. I don't think you look like you're fifty five by the way maybe a hat on the show intentionally. So say maybe like forty two. I kinda love. I got a gray side hair coming. It's just like a disaster. "But when we're in this playoff situation in you looking for a dark horse i go straight straight to the fedex cup rankings and see who has to finish where in order to play next week because only the top seventy standings Are are are moving on. And who i found was mackenzie. Who's who's who's who's sitting sixty seven on the fedex cup rankings and i'm gonna roll with him as my dark horse to finish top twenty ac plus five hundred Like i said if he wants to advance into next week and give himself any sort of look at being in the top twenty five. Come eastlake in two weeks. He's gonna need a great finish this week. And he's he's proven he can do just that finishing top twenty and three of his last five starts so he's gonna have to finish it off kind of by getting that t. ball together this week. He's lost jokes with his driver in five last six events but if there's Situational darkhorse. i liked this week. It's it's mackenzie hughes Top twenty at plus five hundred yen for my dark horse. I did not like him earlier in the year. But i'm i'm getting on this this week. Matthew wolf at one hundred eighty two one. I thought it was a misprint. When i first saw so this guy was a favorite earlier in the year even when he was withdrawn missing cuts w dean couldn't break eighty. You know he would. He was going into the tournaments. Like whether it be a three emma rocket mortgage at thirty five to one forty five to one fifty to one and it just really seems like with this number vegas is just completely given up on them but in terms of you know he's fifty nine in the face. Cup is not having terrible year as People with thinks he's one of the best amateurs like we've ever seen right. He's one of the most talented golfers out there. You know absolutely just bombs it off. The geez always top five top ten driving distance and the one thing i talked about is like i will not pick matt wolf not pick. I see a little bit of form right. You can't Matt wolf would be forty five to one when he's wd the week before taking a month. You know going up like you can't do a candle. Press conference dr bob. Yeah exactly but in terms of he's made the cut in his last four starts. I just feel like when we get a guy jumped out awareness completely win at one hundred eighty one throw a couple of bucks on them. You know that could really be to be something nice so if anyone is able is able to come out of nowhere it's a guy like matthew wolf talk just absolutely bombs it can get on a roll. Santa run away with it so my dark horse is matthew wolf at one hundred. Eighty two one so moving onto our northern trust. Draftkings lineup Tied it up last week. so so fiber's five now between Me and lead. So i'll start off here with my lineup. I'm going Brooks kept good started off them. Going scotty shuffler I'm wearing sam. Berns billy horseshoe bubba watson and seamus power in with remaining salary of five hundred dollars so You know looking at game just a little bit of value. I kind of haven't either left anything over the past couple of weeks in can't can't rely on these these heavy favorites so kind of that. That goes a little bit behind the scenes. Power and billy horsham pics then for my for my team going with them going super top heavy but jesse johnson more kala. Russell started a lot of form lately. Then we're going a little bit off. The deep end gear with maverick mcnealy mattie wolf and carlos ortiz. I'm capped out. Like the los angeles lakers and finally onto our northern trust. Best bet of the week. I'll start off here. Kevin stroman top twenty at plus three hundred and the reason that stranded my best bet. This week is because you know it's a value. Pick for what you're getting. He's finished top. Twenty six of his last eight events. Most recently coming last week at the wyndham with seven points finish and the motivation is is high for showman in the big picture You know he's had a fantastic stretch of golf here to close out two thousand twenty one yet. He's fifty third in the fedex. Cup standings so you think you know a guy likes shulamit. He has finished top twenty in in in every major that he's played in this year didn't play the masters but eighth the pga fifteen. The us open nineteen at the open. So definitely someone who's going to have a lot of Incentive to finish high the next two weeks getting that top twenty five going into eastlake so more than enough data to tell us that stream is more than capable of contending in these elite fields with this high finishes at the majors in so My best bet for the week is kevin strom in top twenty plus three hundred it hopefully stop by the gas station grasping glasses before the round. And and academy. For some wilson clubs. But i gotta. I gotta put that aside this week lead exactly and for my best bet on more Us to ten is leading the fedex cup you know obviously wants to keep that lead going into going into the east lake obviously winning the fedex cup but can obviously go for it. He does you know you can finish. Dfl this weekend. It's not the end of the world but just in terms of his is recently top fours. Informed last five starts top ten. Six of his last nine starts..

"He's actually hasn't been driving the ball that well. The only reason he's that i up is iron. Play has been incredible but what it really comes down to. Is you know not release irons. As i always show up his kennedy. Put the ball in the fairway. So that's something to look for this week doesn't sound like there's crazy rough out there. I know there's some Is knee-high rough. If you really get off but for the most part you can. You can't play from there but finished tied twelfth In twenty nine thousand nine so a little bit of course history there and then one other thing to look at is just that. Jd you turned it. On for the fedex cup playoffs. He's finished in the top seven. In the facts cup's final standings. The last four years going back to when you won the whole thing in two thousand seventeen so for me. He's a pass this week. I'd like to see a little more. Recent going to this like we talked about hasn't really shown too much since the players but will move right into the next guy. Yep yeah over to daniel berger at twenty one and he's been one of my favorite guys to bet on here in the last four weeks simply put together an unbelievable season. We talked about it a lot before. A saint jude. A couple of weeks ago We had that burger over decian ticket that cash on his way to a t five finished in your now. He's finished top ten and three of his last four events so as we look in specific how he's gone around liberty national in the past and going back to that presents come two thousand seventeen. He was another guy Well actually the only guy we've talked about so far. The last one was was was dj. Who went four zero one. One burger actually went undefeated That week at the two thousand seventeen presidents cup so this is gonna lead me right into my first head to head. Pick of the week with daniel. Berger over justin thomas at minus one oh five You know just thomas's reminded me kind of a lot of roy here over the past eight events. He has putted at times horrendous. Almost losing He's lost two shots to total shots field In to his last five events so odd still in his favor as far as putting goes. But i just think we talked about it with jt. In the favorites just a little too inconsistent So my i had the head is going to be daniel. Berger over just thomas minus one. Oh five onto my second Northern trust head to head of the week. i'm taking books kapka over pricey shambo at minus one. Oh five you know regardless that. These haven't played well enough in the same event to have a true notch. Plastic dual down the stretch of golf tournament. We get the opportunity here at the northern trust this week to take sides. I'm going with team brooks A lot of you will glance at some of the overall statistics between the two this year and see the bryson seventh in the fedex. Cup standings brooks's fifteen while no big deal The fact of the matter is in brooks's last six events he has four top ten finishes in three of which in majors So did have a terrible week at the fedex. St jude a couple of weeks ago actually lost me a ticket there. But you have to think that brooks checks his matchup every week just takes a quick quick glance at the books you know. We know. He loves his. Nfl nfl. picks his practice round gambling. Action with phil so seeing that he's up against bryson you know. I think the give should meet turns up for brooks and he brings it this week. As far as you know going against bryson finished outside the top twenty five in years last five events. So you know brooks was at the two thousand. Seventeen presidents cup went to in one Bryson doesn't have that experienced fall back on. And you know. I think brooks are gonna win us. This ticket this week in the disappoint us with some cheesy instagram video. Dissing bryson while he drinks a godawful. Nick global tra. Yeah i'm also going team brooks's while i'm doing brooks kept over zander. Shaath fleet in my head. That's plus one twenty five and you know not now Get too complicated to see these two players really at the same level so the fact that i'm getting lost one. Twenty five is a little bit of value even if they were going to a play off. Eight the tide in this tournament. they're going into sudden death playoff. I feel like brooks would be would be favored. The only reason. I feel like brooks is. We're getting that positive number. At plus twenty five is brooks's kind of a up and down year. It's like either finishes top five. Or mrs tutt so in terms of this head to head. It's kinda nice knowing Use really kind of in control of this thing. And i think we'll know pretty early brooks brooks each has a first round. He's normally in it till the end. So that's my first one brooks over zander. Plus one twenty five and then for my second one. I'm doing destined johnson over. Jon rahm plus one sixty. I just feel like they are completely disrespecting. Dj with this line. He's defending champion. Yes it's a different golf course. But i'm sure they got the same t markers in your walk into this. It was pretty good vibes. Obviously after winning by eleven last year and in terms of you know he's really playing wellness. Part of the country doesn't have a ton of wins of in the northeast of of the us year. At honestly i don't think dj should really be much of a dog to anyone but plus a plus one sixty like we're talking about ton of value there and like you talked about you know with the course history went for on one back in twenty seventeen always gotta beat his john rama. I think he can do it. Yes so onto. Our northern trust trust picks to place This week i'll start off.

"I was greedy. I with top five on rob at two oil. Yeah usually the riskier better than i am. Usually but pamela. I agree with you. The top ten. I mean like. I mean since the cj cup last year he's playing seventeen terms finish top ten and twelve of them only outside the top ten and five of them and one of those. Was that memorial one where he was lean by six heading into the final round. So you ask some that too. I agree with you anytime you can give me. Plus money on rom or a guy as well as he is on. A golf course played well at twenty nine. He plays well at these similar types of golf course delivery national. I'm taking that all day. A couple of other toxins. I kind of like we'll j. burgers a really popular outright this week. I don't know if i want to go that far with him. But he's getting three to one for top ten. I'm gonna start there and then maybe see like you know if i can catch them outright. If i'm feeling like you know maybe showing will like winning form. But i think plus three hundred fifteen over top ten you know the irons are really good. Plus while i'm i'm bankrupt services Come there I mean that got matsuyama earlier. I really like him a lot. You can get plus three fifty for a ton and paul casey to like a. He's he's playing really good golf. I mean he's got a bunch of top ten coming into this term. I think todd sends it three four. Iron play is on point. If this is gonna be a week of just you know you gotta have your really ball. Striking gabby really consistent tita green. I mean i'll take a guy like casey all day. Plus.

"How if like a group of five players more than likely brings a lifetime in their head to head matchup. Unless it's like here like dozen dogs and will elsa like brezler. While i'm not gonna take destiny advice head-to-head the typically further down. The board is where you can find some of those values the players like just and bracelets jambo dusted those players. Their books is just like our is just looking for fall. You're gonna pay attention to the chiefs. They're going to pay attention to the cowboys for. Maybe look over here at the jags. Were nobody's really. I knew the mets pump print is golf has had up if you pay attention to some of these other players. That maybe aren't expected to do very well. There's value. Yeah absolutely. And i use that. I use that all the time like books paying attention to the georgia southern matchup on college football on saturday so we can definitely get some sleep. Because how much is the big handle on a golf tournament right. I mean how many hardcore degenerates are really out the grinding matchups. They don't give a shit. They'll the hanging one twenty whatever who cares again a thousand dollars on this ten dollars whatever. Whatever it's going to be so so you definitely rely heavily on statistics. "Us here on the shell. James welcome back to you better. You bet. Nick and ken bet q. L. tuesday thanks for the winners last week. How you doing good guys. What's going on cabinet be here. We got a wonderful event. This week fulfilled. This is a major like field. Actually the first week of the fedex cup playoff so you have your hundred twenty-five while twenty four decided not three hundred twenty four of the top fedex cup points centers for the year. So this is the star of the playoff. Got three more events in the season and james for people who watch the open and then maybe took a couple of weeks i know you and i were like hammer and the barbasol championship and all this stuff. Never these guys either. Took time off and miss some of the tournament's or played in the olympics and then took last week. I mean really. We haven't seen a lot of these guys rahm bryson and a lot of these guys like. Maybe we see him once in the last month but but not really like does any of that whether it's like rust or fatigue on the opposite way or whatever like the amount of time a guy has off. I could see somebody making a case like what we haven't seen. John robson like black tournament or justin thomas. Whenever we haven't seen these guys in a long time is that ever like a case for you in terms of number like does it matter how long these guys have been off. It doesn't really affect me too much. And i don't think it affects them. Working at all. I mean wrong is is anywhere from six to ten to one to pinpoint upon what you're looking at so they don't care obviously for him you know especially like we haven't seen inches of british. He's got at least one star whether it'd be that. Wdc a couple of weeks ago software. These guys at the olympics but they really do gear their their turn their season towards this kind of run. So they're doing what they can to be ready. And this is a goal of all of this is to finish on top of the first cup. Standings basically won the season and you also get fifteen million dollars finishing up there. So that's incentive even though these guys make millions and they're obviously riches head they are do. Have you'll plenty of incentive to have their games. Sharpen ready for the next three weeks. I'm it is. It's a showcase for the tour as well. So i think that these guys know that regardless time off what they have. I expect most of these guys are peaked into trying to peek for for these next weeks lesson. It's like. I always say the only thing in life better than money is more money. But what did you think. I'm actually a fan of the wyndham now. it's one. I i really liked out. Sedgefield play this week like those greens. They got firm and crispy and any time that you had a putt behind the whole. Oh yeah good luck pasta slippery this week so that was fun and you know there were a couple. It was actually good to see guys. Jackie one twenty five and then this transitions to my next project. If if i'm moral checking you it's a that's true. How fitting was that chessen. Then fucking justin rose who has all the money in the world who doesn't even like he's gonna get exempt status into the pg were forever so it doesn't matter and like it. god you want to talk about choke artists. He must've shorty on eighteen yesterday to bogey the whole mr five-footer that would have put them in the house and that actually sent chessington halley to the playoffs at exactly one twenty five so And that kind of transitions us over the ryder cup team europe because nothing really changed so far it actually kind of look at the standings. The top nine is set like i. I don't so so you got rahm. Rory hobbling paul. Casey had fitzpatrick lee west with tommy fleetwood stock by the way he didn't deserve to be in the facts. Cup playoffs shocker. But by he's probably gonna make it on points. Because i don't see anybody else behind catching shane. Lowry and behind shane. Lowry victor perez mistake. Six straight cuts like he's. He's not doing anything. i mean. robert mcintyre is not playing fantasy playoff. So he's going to have to do something over in europe with the next month. I think he's gonna cap spot anyways. So there's a matter room because he's so young. I i just think he's your when you get down to like your lab. The twelve options on europe. He's the best player to play. He's gonna make talent and merit. It's not just you know groom your best player. He deserves beyond their impulse. Her who needs it makes noise of the facts got plants in order to get the amish. He's getting put on capitol choice. Okay all right fine so then you got the new one spot left then. One between poltergeist. Non bigshot bob ghanaian. Sergio ain't sergio. Justin rose is not gonna play offs. Fuck is is going to go over to europe and play. I'll these cabins about so. It's i think team. Europe is preset now so so that's nice so the dramas over on us. So i mean. I think the only thing that could possibly move based on the facts play zander and speed. Silly and Misleading Retirement Calculators

"I think the main reason people seem amazed at the idea of retiring at age. Thirty forty or even fifty is the lack of real information on early retirement. In general if you type retirement calculator into a search engine these days and enter some stats about yourself. You will find some very strange assumptions. That are guiding you to think you need an absolute load of money to retire for example. I was once working through such a guide in a magazine from northern. Trust a bank that caters to the wealthy. It went something like this. Consider your goals for retirement. What life events do you need to be prepared for. The following table lists average cost children's and grandchildren's university education. A hundred thousand dollars per child children's and grandchildren's weddings twenty five thousand dollars. Assisted care facilities a hundred thousand dollars per year. Medical costs funeral arrangements. Twenty five thousand dollars trust funds for loved ones esteem and legacy planning and charitable foundations. 'wow looks like you're well into the millions before you even get to buy yourself some groceries. Another retirement calculator on cnn. Dot com has various parts to fill out dropdown boxes pre filled with hand values like retiring at age sixty five and needing seventy percent of your maximum pre retirement income constantly for the rest of your life. The drop down box with seventy percent in it did not even offer a value lower than forty percent. This percentage of income concept is one of the most anti mustache ones out there if you make two hundred thousand dollars per year just before retiring this experience. Corrupt you so much that you need a hundred and forty thousand dollars per year for the rest of your life or is it possible to maintain the same luxury standards of a person who has a merely comfortable income like forty thousand dollars per year. This goes back to the ideas of the get what you need posting. I made recently and that is why not go for maximum happiness rather than maximum consumption. I propose that maximum happiness is achieved at a spending level where you live in a comfortable space. Eat healthy foods and get to do lots of active and stimulating things with friends. That doesn't have to cost a hundred and forty thousand dollars per year or even fifty thousand dollars per year for most of us the other assumption they push on people is a very low rate of savings they assume you will less than the annual limit on 401k contributions. And don't say much about what to do if you save more than that which the high income person mentioned a few paragraphs ago could certainly do so these banks and mutual fund companies will continue to tell you that you need millions of dollars to retire because it benefits them for you to invest your money with them. Luckily it's a harmless bit of tom foolery since the saving benefits you as well but the disservice they do is in scaring people out of dreaming to save faster or to think about much shorter time horizons like tenures instead of just plain old age. Sixty five so. I'll give you a quick retirement calculator of my own adult couple with no kids or whose children are. Grown can live very comfortably on forty thousand dollars per year and retirement. My own family lives very comfortably with one child on somewhere. In the twenty seven thousand dollar range you can shoot higher or lower depending on what level of luxury water pursue twenty. Two eighty thousand dollars is a good absolute maximum sane range. But if you don't want to calculate everything out just go for forty thousand dollars and figure out how to make your savings produce that for you for a single person. It might be difficult to slice in half because you lose some benefits from sharing a house in car but you can come close to quick early retirement budgets number one in early retiree couple lives on thirty thousand dollars per year. Earning five thousand of that combined in part time luxurious post retirement careers. The remaining twenty five thousand dollars per year is generated by their savings. Six hundred and twenty five thousand dollars of total savings are required to generate this amount of passive income using the four percent rule number two an early retirees single person leaves on twenty five thousand dollars. Earning ten thousand dollars on his or her many career. Fifteen thousand dollars per year is required from savings which calls for a nest egg of about three hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. I'm working on some much more detailed and exciting sample budgets using real numbers for my own spending experiences before and after retirement

Where does the economy go from here?

"We are going to dispense with the president's remarks last night about changes he wants made to the virus relief. Bill that congress finally passed on monday. After months of negotiations. We are going to dispense with it with this observation. It's all fun and games and political intrigue until somebody gets hurt and people are getting hurt all over the place in this economy as we have been telling you for months and we got more evidence of that this morning courtesy of the commerce department will learn consumer spending fell nearly half a percent last month the first time. It has fallen since april thing. How long ago. That was and it same time. Personal income fell by a little bit more than a full percent. The third decline in four months. It's no mystery. Y right government aid has been keeping people afloat and that aid is running out so to get us going. Marketplace's samantha fields looks at what that is going to mean for this economy. This time of year is normally when people spend more money. Carl tannenbaum chief economist. At northern trust says the fact that personal income and consumer spending dropped in november is a bad omen. It does give a pretty good sense that households are not going into the new year in very strong answer to the urgency around. The negotiations in washington consumer spending crashed in march and april but then bounced most of the way back largely thanks to government aid back in april after the cares act. There was a huge pop in personal income. Ted rosman is an industry analyst at credit cards dot com and a lot of that did trickle down to other sectors of the economy. He says over the summer a lot of people felt like things were getting better but now maybe those unemployment checks have dried up. They've long since spent their first stimulus check. Maybe they're not able to go back to work. And people are nervous. After months of uncertainty over whether the federal government would provide more relief says tim quinlan senior economist at wells. Fargo six a long time to build up consumer confidence and not so long to disrupt it or to shake it and when people have less confidence and income there are less likely to spend their money. Carl tannenbaum northern trust says that is a bad combination spreading done by households accounts for almost seventy percent of our annual gross domestic product. Our national income. And if it's not recovering he says neither will the economy.

S. businesses have announced layoffs or furloughs as their cash flows dry up Carl Tannenbaum chief economist at northern trust told the Wall Street journal that if half the workers in hard hit industries such as restaurants retail and personal services are laid off the unemployment rate could rise ten percentage points to more than thirteen

Tiger battling stiffness ahead of playoff opener

"Tell you you might remember his last start in the playoffs was last year and his epic win at the twenty tour championship that sort of set the stage for his win at the masters this year that win moved him into a tie with rory mcilroy dustin johnson for the most wins during the playoff since they debuted which was in two thousand seven. The three repairs are combined for a twenty five percent of the playoff events contested today and we're going to show you live pictures right now. Tiger woods as he is on the course and we will bring michael collins into the conversation because michael as you saw there has been following tiger around liberty national this morning good morning michael collins. What have you seen. How is tiger looking this morning. You see tiger walking off right now but he told me before he said <hes> oh here. We would have been around this morning what i said. What should i tell everybody he goes. Tell him i'm on the t. but he was supposed to be on t. at seven and there was a delay so he didn't get out on the t. till seven thirty so he was lying about seeing on the t. Here's what i've seen for tigers so far today. It's as simple as this. <hes> it is a pro-am there are three guys playing with it from the northern trust and and it's been just like this when it comes down to it. He's been hitting the ball pretty good. Yesterday he played a practice round with brooks kapka dustin johnson and <unk> harold varner the third and they had a lot of fun out there. Those guys play ten holes tiger hit a pretty good. The funny story was sarah varna. The third started the day and said i'm just gonna hit it by tiger. So you're like a iron pipe and tiger said i'm a hammer and hammer beats pipe. Every time and varner never hit a pass them. He thought he did want and said. I got you on that one. I got you on now and i've been working out and harrow garner that there's caddy do him under the bus and said man. You worked out two days. Which of course it does. The johnson brooks let a couple ago and when they let their drives go even how varner that there was a. I think they got both of tiger. I think they gotta pass this so far tigers. There's just hit it okay. He hasn't hit spectacular to be honest with you because there was a delay. The range was opened late. So tiger looks a little bit stiff like he hasn't gone through his full warmup warmup routine. He said a couple balls left. Enwright came up short with an iron shot from the middle of the fairway so it looks like he's just slowly but surely trying to get warmed up but that's what pro-am i am days four right yeah super-quick michael. You've been white on with us when we had you on before the british open and we drowned before the p._j. Both times you said don't expect much from him. Give me a rundown here. What do we expect from him in these playoffs this well let me start. Let's just start with this week. It's real easy for this week my prediction for tiger this week he's gonna fall fall outside the top ten but i think he can be inside the top twenty five and the reason that i say that is because the forecast for this week is for temperatures to be in the mid eighties every single day which means tiger won't have trouble warming his back up and it also means. You don't have to worry about getting stiff during the rounds. Hopefully this'll be a good week for tiger. We'll be watching and we get these playoffs underway earlier than in years past as they have a new schedule on the p._g._a. Tour so well done michael enjoyed out there. Stay safe tigers coming at you and we will see you a little but later in the program his pen back adam. Thank you michael collins. We'll see in a little

The question is not whether the Fed will cut rates but why

"The marketplace word of the day today is expectations expectations used in a sentence. It might sound like this, the Federal Reserve yesterday acted in accordance with expectations and signaled its willingness to cut interest rates the Fed's turned, although not unexpected was a big one from where the central Bank was just six months ago you might remember when it was raising rates. No, we're not talking about a huge cut here. Maybe a quarter of a percentage point. But as marketplace's Tracey Samuelson reports when you are trying to game out what a rate cut is gonna mean in this economy, it is all about expectations. Let's say the fed does shave a quarter of a percent off interest rates at its next meeting. Well, the biggest impact typically on lower rates would be on kind of interest sensitive sectors of the. Enemy housing autos. For example, thing is Tony Rodriguez. Head of fixed income strategy. For new Wien says that the market is already expecting lower rates from the fed, so some rates consumers and businesses pay already reflect that that positive impact is already in the market. So, you know, mortgage rates have come down. Financing rates have come down for you. Know durable equipment, autos, etc. So that cut on its own wouldn't make a huge difference for the economy. What makes a big difference for the economy is does that change expectations about where rates are going into Holland horse? Chief economist for Citi group says, if the fed is cutting rates in the relative near-term, the question is they cut more over the next few months, or next few years in cutting rates, the fed would be sending markets. And I got your back kind of a message that is ready to act if say the trade war starts really slowing economic growth, Carl Tannenbaum is chief economist at Northern Trust, but it's making the statement that the central Bank stands ready to support. Port the continuation of the expansion, and that symbolic message may actually be more powerful than the short room symbolism might be more powerful economically than the cut itself. AT&T faces challenge of paying off debt while investing in expanded services

"If you owe the Bank one hundred dollars jay-paul getting one said, it's your problem. You're the Bank one hundred million dollars. It's the bank's problem yo a hundred and sixty nine billion dollars could be everybody's prompt from American public media. This is marketplace. In Los Angeles. On car result is Wednesday today. The twenty fourth of April good as always to have you along everybody we begin in corporate America today. We're quarterly earnings reports have been the barometer the past couple of weeks AT and T had. It's turn this morning. Did find not quite as good as everybody had been guessing. But fine, the real story of AT and T though, an increasing number of businesses in this economy is it's giant pile of debt company promised last year. It was going to do something about how much it owed, and it is trying to make good. It has lost hundreds of thousands of TV and wireless subscribers as it's moved money away from promotions into paying down that debt, but for dealing with debt free TNT and others could be a problem down the road. Marketplace's Benesch or has the story. A so AT and T owes a hundred sixty nine billion dollars debt levels are really really high. I mean, they haven't been most. Debt of any public US company right now Keat Snyder is an industry analyst with CF RA AT and T has a lot of stuff in needs to do like get more content for HBO develop a streaming service. Roll out five G networks. This is all expensive bad debt load is acting is kind of financial handcuffs to them. Why did it take on all this debt in the first place own part because it could interest rates have been super low for a decade? You're a company, and you can borrow at these very low rates, and you have something to do with the money, you'd be kind of crazy not to do it. Kenneth Rogoff is a professor of economics at Harvard corporate debt in general nearly doubled in the past twelve years from less than five trillion dollars to more than nine trillion dollars. The problem is that some of the people borrowing our borrowing with vary. You restrictions. They're going down into much chunkier kinds of debt. He says there could be one or even two trillion dollars worth of this kind of debt out there. And it's mostly not companies like AT and T whose debt is. Investment grade. It's small and medium sized companies. It presents a risk certainly if and when we head into our next recession Carl tanenbaum is chief economist at Northern Trust, the when you have lower rated corporate debt, what that means is that the distance between performance and default is that much shorter depending on how intertwined in the broader financial system. All this debt is defaults could be distabilise for the economy. Unfortunately, the best way to find out is further to be another recession for now a recession in the next year or seems unlikely so debt-laden companies may have a little longer to clean up their books, but not forever in New York. I'm Sabrina sure for marketplace.

Patience may be a virtue for the Fed, but a rate cut would be a salvation for the market

"Conversation with router Sturkenboom. He's chief investment strategist at Northern Trust asset management and throw in the studio router would the global bond rallies picking up bits heating up and treasury yields are going lower across the curve and across sovereigns around the world is the market getting a bit too negative on economic growth this year and beyond. We think from an international perspective. The answer's yes. I think looking at Europe looking at Japan looking at the trade negotiations going on between China, and the USA we think that growth is more likely to not to pick up a little bit in the second half of the year and therefore Kern bomb pricing in terms of growth expectations is a little too negative. However, if you look at the US in particular, we do want to make one caveat to that statement, which is the fed has made a mistake probably in September definitely in December. And the question now is will defend own up to that mistake. And will they start cutting rates like the market is basically pricing them to do forcing them to do. And that's what that's the real question that we're currently trying to answer is willing to get off the pause and get on with a rate cut to get back in charge of monetary policy to get back in front of the curve futures are pricing in about thirty bits of easing by the end of nineteen which suggests at least a quarter of a point reduction. What do you think they'll deliver this year? You think they're going to move into cuts? Well, the question to us is really what they should do what they will do are two different things. What we think they should do is cut and they should cut basically right now they've been behind occur for a while. Now, they have made a mistake in December. And they need to start owning up to it and an posture. Simply isn't good enough. The market is telling them, it's not good enough. So we think they should cut right now. But we'll day well for now, we're we're worried that they won't we think that they are trying to wait this out. And they hoping that the pass will do it. So for now, we don't think they will follow the market, even though we think they should. I mean, this dovish capitulation that we've seen from the fed is really spurred a wave of sector rotations. How are you approaching the trading strategies approaching investing in the current climate? So we've we've made to two choices one is to in January to add risk in general, and in particular to interest rate sensitive sector, so in that regard, the current fallen interest rates has been a positive for us. And Secondly, we've chosen to take quite a bit of risk in high yield exposure at the start of the year because we felt that a deterioration aspect would help them be devaluation technical and default rate outlook was actually all pretty pretty solid. So that's those are the things that we have done to manage this

U.S. trade deficit hits 10-year high in 2018 on record imports

"Is an observation to be made here as we get going with the big picture economic news of the day. Which is of course, this morning's report from the good people at the Commerce Department that our trade deficit, President Trump's favorite economic indicator. You might remember. Anyway, it grew last year to a record six hundred twenty one billion dollars. That is we imported six hundred twenty one billion dollars more stuff goods and services than we sold abroad. Here. Then is the observation that for all of those hard earned American dollars. We send overseas we get stuff in return their goods and services other countries make that we want so we buy them global trade, the often overlooked point, though, is that the trade deficit isn't some kind of profit and loss statement for the American economy report card, and it's not in and of itself a cause for concern. In fact, the trade gap last year was largely. Driven by a strong domestic economy. Marketplace's Tracey Samuelson gets us going. President Trump talks about the trade deficit kind of a lot. We have a trade deficit with almost every country in the we have a massive trade deficit with everybody. But which aging we racked up trillions of dollars in trade deficits, also known as loss we are going to start whittling that down and as fast as possible. So the fact that the trade deficit grew nearly thirteen percent just last year by his own standard. The higher deficit means he's failing. And that we're losing that other countries are taking advantage of us, but Doug Irwin economists. And trade historian at Dartmouth College doesn't actually see it that way, he says it's natural expected even at the trade deficit increased last year in general what we've seen US history is that when we have a booming economy or a growing economy trade deficit tends to either stay the same or grow. Oh, and they tend to strengthen recessions from two thousand eight to two thousand nine the trade deficit fell by nearly half counterintuitive as it may seem the growing trade deficit last year was driven by how strong the US economy was especially relative to big trading partners, like the European Union and China, Catherine man is the global chief economist at Citi group consumers are buying more because they are have higher income because they're strong labor markets, and because they got a little bit of a tax cut that makes them able to consume more. And some of it falls on imports seem thing with business businesses producing because labor markets are tight they got a little bit of a tax cut. So they import intermediate product so that they can produce goods to meet the demand in the domestic economy, and for a communist, this is all very very predictable. They saw this coming a mile away. If the US really wants to reduce the trade deficit it should. Save more says Carl Tannenbaum chief economist at Northern Trust. One of the reasons we have a trade deficit is that on average our consumers spend a lot more of their income than foreigners to saving not as fun as spending. But ten imams says it make households more stable in the long run and reduce the trade deficit. I'm Tracey Samuelson for marketplace. Well, let's put a context on this morning's trade gap. Number reminder that it's the total value of goods and services that we buy and sell overseas, Tracy was talking about goods that has actual tangible stuff that blew out our trade deficit. Well, here's the deal. The interesting part is that we've got a trade surplus in services have for decades now actually of which we sell a bunch overseas

NBA Board Of Governors to vote on three potential rule changes

"NBA board of governors expected to pass rule changes for. Next season changes include resetting the shot clock after an offensive rebound to fourteen Seconds instead of resetting the shot clock to twenty four seconds ESPN NBA analyst Chris herring and Frank is Sola discuss the changes on the jump with amino acid Chris, I like it personally because I think like like just said. There it speeds up stuff a little bit I honestly. Think one of the most exciting games a lot of times are. The ones where you get a, kick out, three or someone, tips the ball out and it just changes, the momentum of. The game so much anyway I really liked the idea of actually doing that as long as they're not losing if you get, an early shot up in the clock that you're, not losing time from having the clock resets said that instantly two shots giving him. On mine reality heat Tim Thomas against the Lakers and then Robert Yeah come out instantly and there's more big shots hit, on, those scramble plays off, of long threes I like the rule from this standpoint let's say on. Down, by one the other team gets the rebound they offensive rebound with twenty seconds left now automatically So now Free throws and it makes it more. Strategy, fending now, you know you have six seconds if you can get them on. A stop I think it's a smart rule by the league and it moves things along and then eliminates free throws which. Nobody likes Ward will vote on the. Changes at a meeting. In September
