Rachael Clark of Northern Kentucky University on Hope in Poverty

"And twenty thirteen northern kentucky university began a partnership with the west side neighborhood in newport a community across the ohio river from cincinnati and a few miles from our campus. The west side would receive help with parks community gardens public art and even a bicycle maintenance class. That was a way to teach science and math while having fun in k. U. students in turn would have experiential education opportunities early on in. Ku's community engagement team asked. If one of my psychology classes could measure hope in the residents of the west side. We agreed and also measured meaning in life. Hope is important because over the last two decades it has emerged at the moderately strong predictor of wellbeing on the west side. Most families live at or below the poverty line you might reasonably expect residents to have lower hope and meaning in life. They didn't my students surveyed west side residents and for the sake of comparison in k. U. students our findings published earlier. This year showed no major difference between the two groups. Indeed the newport residents generally scored higher for hope and meaning in life especially among newer residents. Who share a vision of what the west side might become as residents take greater ownership of the old neighborhoods future rather than seeing it to absentee landlords because of these surprising findings we decide to explore a results with a focus group with learned. That residents while hopeful. Personally were less optimistic about external forces shaping their neighborhood. They felt for example that municipal services were more readily provided to wealthier residents neighborhood and socio political factors impacted their levels of hope more so than individual factors still that didn't diminish their personal faith in their future or their commitment to a better westside.

Linda Dynan, Northern Kentucky University Hospital Safety and Quality

"Most of us think of hospitals as places. We go in order to get well when we are too ill to recover from illness or injury at home. Researchers many disciplines and healthcare providers are striving to make sure that is true. I'm economist studies how to improve healthcare. Which means either we can improve access to in the quality of healthcare at the same cost or maintain access and quality but produce these at lower cost in two thousand report documented. The alarming incidents and cost preventable adverse events or patient safety events in america's hospitals reporting that as many as ninety eight thousand people die in hospitals every year as a result of preventable medical errors since then government agencies and hospitals have worked to measure medical error and provide incentives for hospitals to minimize these events. This is where my research comes in. What types of policies are effective in reducing medical error but types of investments hospitals lead to improvements in patient safety information technology nurse. Training empowering frontline caretakers to signal problems. Once we know what works. How do we get hospitals to adopt these systems and processes. How do we make these changes. Sustainable what have we learned where we can do better. We've seen improvement in many measures of hospital. Quality preliminary results indicate increased expenditure on the education and training of nursing staff. Non data processing produce improvements in patient. Safety context matters. that is each hospital's different in quality. Improvement efforts needs to be tailored to each environment. Incentives also matter government policies related to value based care and non payment encourage hospitals to change behaviors to improve outcomes. Healthcare workers are motivated to do the right thing but doing the right things often costly and we have much more to learn.

Bourbon, Banter, and the Best of 2020!! - burst 02

"Welcome back everyone to the broken court. Podcast episode to who. I'm dan aaron jake and right. Now i'm gonna throw it over to my man aaron for our toast since it's real close to valentine's day. I thought i would give a valentine's toast one of those cheesy almost greeting card. Esque toast hallmark. Here's here's to you. So roses are red violets are blue. Don't get me flowers bourbon. Will do cheers. cheers everyone. Damn let's get stuff so right now. World bourbon news. Going around out of new rift still company out of newport kentucky. Something that's kind of Near and dear to my heart. Since i do work in the world fast food. They're doing something really cool for all of us New riff is putting out a fifteen year. Straight bourbon whiskey. they're calling. i believe it's called. Relief is bottled in bond. Just like all of their other products. Distilled in indiana. By what what we can only think is mvp. Because they're the only ones. I think are going to have the stocks that are up there in fifteen years and i think it is. Gp wouldn't surprise me. The barrels were purchased out of mvp and again that's all speculative but they were stored at their warehouse with the remainder of their time and this run is limited to just nine hundred if not less only to be distributed out of their distillery for the price of two hundred dollars. I think i tweeted about that. Too on the burkan broken corker twitter page to if you wanna if you wanna get in more in depth about it. I believe he did. But that two hundred dollars is going to go to benefit Restaurant workers around the ohio and kentucky area. I believe that release is going to benefit. Both the ohio restaurant employee relief fund and the northern kentucky chamber of commerce who's in charge of distributing the funds to people who need it the most for more on that you can check us out on facebook at the broken court crew is our facebook group or you can follow new riff on all of their social media for more information on that release. And i'm sure it's going to be amazing man. I think you know what a great especially this time of year. What a great a cinnamon for them to do. I mean cove is really hit. That service industry pretty hard. It's ruined a lot of people and you don't see a lot of people talking about i. Understand nurses and doctors are at the forefront of all of this kovin but they don't talk a lot about like like your fast food workers who have been working throughout the entire thing. I mean i've been fast food. I have not stopped working since covert started. Yeah and i mean. God bless all the frontline workers as far as medical is concerned because they are. They're in close contact. All that like i said are the forefront of all of this but you rarely hear about anyone else you know. Keeping america fed keeping america clothed. Everything like that. So big shout out to all our healthcare workers and big shoutout to all our fast food workers. Anyone who's working retail right now and all of our truckers keeping everyone delivered to and everyone stocked up so we can get through this together. Definitely a big shout to the truckers. So we have a new segment on the show. And i want mr jake over there to take it over. Oh yeah this is our new segment. It's called what's cracking so basically what it is. We give a shoutout to whatever we've had since last podcast. Something's good something you drink and right now something you wanna tell everybody about to me. It was new roof winter whiskey. I tried that a good friend at a bar. Bought that around for actually me and dan and you talk about unbelievable. That's one of the best new products i've had. It really really is. I haven't had very many and of what i've had it. It's up there. I really so good. It opened my eyes to new roof and made me wanna do a little bit more research into their products. And then i mean on top of all of that. We found out about this thing that you just talked about the fifteen year. Oh yeah what's cracking for you. So what's cracking for me. I've had a couple of new bottles. I'm gonna give a couple of honorable. Mentions i never had seventeen ninety. Two bottle in bonn. I know very very strange. But i had that and it's delicious. If you can get your hands on bottle relatively cheap. I paid forty five ninety nine for man. I think that's right around retail so also from french. Lick indiana lead w sinclair four grain. It's called the iconoclast It's a four product from them. What happened long story short. They had three barrels. That were of the league w sinclair that. We're just a little off. They didn't say whether it was a good offer a bad off. They just said it was often. So they mix those three bottles together and made the iconoclasts. But the one. I really really wanna talk about is the o. H ingram whiskey It is from brown water. Bourbon company out of nashville. Where the whisky comes from. What happens with it. It's really cool. They on the mississippi river in an o o h ingram. Born and so really. Yeah so they have Redone this barge completely rick house out of it and so what

"Welcome back to the northern kentucky spotlight. I'm here at c. J. of course the sponsor of the northern kentucky spotlight and today. We're talking holiday travel if you have to travel in the next several weeks. We're going to let you know what maybe different this time around so here. Of course it's fly healthy and cvt and we're gonna talk to the vice president of customer experience. Adam chrysler is here to tell us all about adam. Thank you for. Joining us other podcast. Thanks okay so many of us have not settled on a plane in maybe a year maybe longer so tell us what's different this time around the same that there are a few key differences when you come here to the airport. The first is The parking has been consolidated into the parking garage so little can more convenient for the folks that are the parking out in the value park lot. But that's ten dollars a day the amok right into the terminal when you get into terminal. Keep that mask on social distance Those are the two key changes that we want everyone to keep in mind other than that. It's really you know business as usual. you know. we have a Our restaurants some of them are closed. But we have quite a few open. So we encourage folks out to the airport eric. Airport website And the flight healthy page and see what's open and what's What's happening out here so once you walk in you're going to see plexiglass barriers and those sorts of things when we get to the security line. Let's talk about timing and that sort of thing. Do we still need to hear two hours ahead. We still encourage folks to come out two hours early that we didn't get through ticketing and and get through the check. Point with the social distancing. The lines are a little bit slower than they typically are. But that just gives you that added Added confidence that. You're not going to miss that flight. And he gets to your destination and the tsa has as allowing more hand sanitizer to i know that's a big concern for that that is correct yep so in addition to the normal Three one one you can bring in an additional twelve. Ounces of hand sanitizer the deal when we talk about cleanliness and i know that's the question no matter where we go right now in the world of cove it What are the steps that c is taking to make sure that things are adequately cleaned so we've always maintained a very clean facility but a few key things that we've changed as we've really increased our our Our high touch cleanliness on the high touch areas. And then we've also brought in a new process where we are actually treating the surfaces for in the product we use as on the surface for thirty days gives us protection against virus and other viruses from your customers perspective. Those that you've talked to. What do they say about how. Things are a little bit different. This time around. The you know we do here. That's a little bit Permits lower and folks. You tend to get excited at the airport. And they forget the social distance but you know they They come back around when they realize their standard right on. Someone's mattia but for the most part you know just slightly Slightly to the flights are on time. I mean let's be honest of that. That's been one of the. Big benefits is the industry's very much on time reduction in activity But you know most folks aren't seeing much much difference you know. There's a few to changes. We have to make in terms of how we handle ourselves. Where in the mass. But for the most part it's a it's a very similar. We hear the announcement happening right now and this is your announcements throughout the reminding us too busy from those sorts of things at. It's also interesting. The boarding process in some cases a little bit different moving back to front not up on top of people. And that's all. The airlines have changed their boarding process and it is from the back to the front no more zone by zone by zone really encouraging folks just to limit those interactions and the amount of time of passing each other. We were just talking a little bit. I flew last weekend. And what i notice was even on more crowded planes The process of getting off the plane was much quicker because people we're not trying to like Jump in front of someone else. They wanted to really maintain that distance. And it's an interesting thing that A more crowded plane can get out quicker if we follow the rules. I think that's kind of the point isn't it. is you know it's interesting Before i was here at the airport. I worked for an airline and we spent a lot of time talking about that planning process. And you're exactly correct it If you just let it work and let it flow it works really well honestly. I don't think i've ever gotten out of a plane quicker and even even in a somewhat crowded plane so interesting there What about i know. Some airlines are selling the middle seat. Some are not. How does that process work. Its airline by airline. That's the way they're choosing to sell their to sell their their fleet You know that. I believe delta's the one that has announced that they're extending their no middle for a longer period of time. There's interesting reports out from some of our trade street news speaking about the cleanliness of the air on the aircraft. The air filtration is is hospital grade. And if if you recall the last time here in the plane the is coming down from above you and actually has pulled out by your feet. So that air is not blowing sideways. It's coming straight down and pass your body out the floor. All good news adam. Thank you so much we appreciate it. Thanks for coming out you to and of course we appreciate. Cg support here on the northern kentucky spotlight. Well happy travels to you but don't go anywhere just yet. We've got more coming up on the northern kentucky spotlight when we return the northern kentucky chamber helps expand your number. It's what we do building your network means growing your business. It's what we do and welcome back to the northern kentucky. Spotlight one other thing. I wanted to mention in talking. With adam chrysler. Cg whom you just heard from also mentioned that it There some airlines that nut gators and masked with bench. They're not allowed. I mean they literally will not let you on the plane. They typically have mass. They are that they they'll give you a but just keep in mind as you prepare to head wherever you're headed. Each airline has its own specific roles. You always want to check out their websites and and make sure that your yep all right protocols because you don't get stuck at the airport do not so you mentioned earlier catching up on your christmas. We've he's what. What christmas movies are you catching up on. What's your all time favorite. I really have you caught any new ones. Okay now yes and yes all of these things. Yes we decided during cova de you getting too much but we can watch movies christmas vacation and charlie brown christmas or my two favorites of the time no doubt and l. so there's three I do like a new of gotta catch christmas chronicles. Al is always a really really a love that movie home alone. I mean you name it and watch what we have seen the christmas chronicles. "Welcome back to the northern kentucky spotlight and right now. Christopher scott joins us he is a first net solution consultant. And we're gonna be talking about. I in exactly what it is but first of all. Thank you so much for joining us today for making me here. We are here. We are in the middle of a pandemic and i nat began in the midst of a completely different tragedy. So let's talk about how i met began in. We're has moved from there to now. Yeah so Brief history I met grew out of the devastating losses from the terrorist attacks of nine eleven The attacks exposed glaring weaknesses in the communication systems. self-service spotty Countless emergency response teams couldn't communicate even using their their trusted Radios hand held radios And any first responders lost their lives so congress established the first responder network authority and charged with building. A nationwide purpose built broadband network. Just for first responders so the first responder network authority put out an rfp and contract at at and t. to build and deliver this Innovative ecosystem called. I met so first. Night is the nationwide wireless communications ecosystem designed with and for first responders and those who support their vital efforts. Meaning that could be Healthcare workers utilities Continuity of government key faculty and in at a k. Through twelve or a higher. Ed school building. So it's it's the network first responders have been asking for with priority and preemption unprecedented security A commitment to expand rural coverage This means first responders connect i. It's priority access on the network. So let's talk about how. I actually works in an emergency situation so First night is designed to keep first responders and their partners connected with the voice text and data video services that they need so they can focus on what's important so A couple of examples with first night you get access to a dedicated deployable for a crisis situation or a plan to vent meaning if a structure if a cell tower was taken out of service i e customer can can request a fat cl or a sell on on my truck a satellite truck We have a fourteen hour response to operation commitment. So from the time that that request comes in we have fourteen hours to be onsite and end up and running I know especially with all the hurricanes coming up through the gulf This year our response operation group has been extremely busy and so while there aren't a lot of hurricanes in northern kentucky and we are dealing with a lot of what if situations I is committed to that emergency. Emergency response Even when unforeseen events affect the the network infrastructure so this is obviously nationwide how the scope how many agencies organizations are we talking of involved with this. We have seventy two colt strategically located throughout the country. We have three drone tethered drones. That can be put in the air to provide coverage and we have we have one blimp which is called. I met one of course because asked to have a name. So even an example there was a train derailment in eastern kentucky earlier this year and there was Spillage of chemical into the river and this is on the back side of a mountain in eastern kentucky so there wasn't any coverage there so State police and the environmental emergency response team requested a to provide coverage for those that. Were going down to the crash site and and helping helping still and helping clean up the the railcars so that was a local example of a call that was made for a cold here in kentucky. Let's talk about that a local aspect. Obviously this is nationwide. I met is you are here in Ignore the kentucky area. What's the importance of being here. And also being a member for this big company to be a member of the northern kentucky chamber. Well i know that You know you're right. I is built for all public safety. That means every first responder in the in the country career or volunteer federal tribal state or local urban suburban rural And again that includes those that support first responders. Emergency response situation Triaging the crash site Communications with police during an active shooter situation at a at a school Road crews and utility workers on the scene of disaster so also reaching rural and remote parts of america is one of our top priority. So you think all lt eighteenth. At and t. l. t. bands and be fourteen spectrum which is awarded to us as part of the first night contract. I met currently covers more than two point. Six one two point six one million square miles in two thousand nineteen alone. We added more than one hundred and twenty thousand square miles of ltd coverage. And i was told that that's roughly the size of new mexico. Wow to to put it simply been. We've been busy giving more first responders in the community communities. They served to access the critical communication capabilities They need so we aren't stopping there. Were actively extending the nationwide reach of. I met to give agencies large and small reliable unsettled. I should mention that can activity and the modern to well. We're glad you're part of the northern kentucky area so much for taking time with us today to explain such an important thing. Garner the mini. This new was happening when a wonderful thing. Thank you so much thank you. I appreciate being here and everyone else. Stick.

"So that for for us Northern Kentucky is is across that Ohio ocean as we like to call it tell me why it was important issue or an Ohio company National company, but with an office in Ohio to join the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. Well, I'll tell you this, you know, I'm going to sales role so so dead. You know large part of my job is networking and you know, typically since we are National we we have certain organizations that we join but you know to not look in our in our markets. Typically those are more professional organizations that are that are in there specific roles, you know facility management office building owners and so forth. So we don't traditionally Network in in Chambers simply because there are so many in regions but this is an exception here in a reason is as as a new business development person in this market. I had so many people mentioned Northern Kentucky chamber and you really should look into it and and what I found and really why they you know, why there was was so much positive energy out there about it was all of the events that are offered wage. Um, you know, there's just such a wide range, you know, I'm involved in a referral Network. We we do that. I'm I'm a member of the ambassador's a group and you know, just so all the different events that that can you know, there's different times of day. You have your morning meetings. Your after hours are just really something for everyone in the content is just took a meaningful too. There's just so much to be gained from a membership. So yeah, I I actually pushed that up through our our executive team and and let them know that this was an exception here and it's it's certainly paid off. Well, we appreciate that and it's great to know that all those events and resources which by the way during covid-19 and creased especially much more frequently online a specially so we appreciate that as well. And this podcast is one of those ways that we Outreach and and share and make sure all those events are happening. Well one last question for you Amy. What time? Is the you know, if people want to get in touch with you, where do they need to go? Who do they need to call and and and I say this to chamber members, you know, we we've learned a lot, you know in the past few months in the classroom filled sweet. Please reach out to me. I will treat you just like any customer. I mean, we're chamber members together. So feel free to pick up the phone and give me a call if you just have some questions about real tree or one of Bounce bouncing thoughts out. My number is 513-254-4650. That's my cell phone. "Such a cute little area with shops and restaurants and bars and coffee shops you name and yeah, this is going to be a great way to get people down there. So good news. They're speaking of of outdoor drinking Jeremy, you know, I love that segues before I forget tonight. I'm actually going to an extent. They are starting their igloos there. You're going to start with them. So I'm going to I'm going to test those out tonight. Maybe I'll report back to you next week. I'll tell you what's really cool about this is that you reserve them and then the money it costs to reserve and they apply toward your drinks. Yeah, which so it's essentially it's free and in many places it costs like I mean, I'm not exaggerating hundreds of dollars in some of these drop in sales and such in Cincinnati to reserve igloos, not Celebrex. And so again, listen, I'm I'm on your side. I am going to take you know, I'm going to do this for you. This is I have no interest and and going off. Making delicious beer Jeremy. This is all for the for for Northern Kentucky, you know, and some people were worried about um, when they first these things cuz it's like, you know, you're taking the the outdoors indoor but if you've actually truly follow the guidelines and go with your party that you're quarantining with anyways, right? I think it's safer because you can actually be in a little bubble inside of a barn and safe and they're you know, they're sanitized and that's what so you have to reserve time and in between they will sanitize everything and look at the very least. It's a good way to get us out there and and help out local businesses to speaking of Covington. Of course a dump. The Eagles are going to be the Rooftop at the Braxton on in Covington coming in is just banned natural hair discrimination. This has got National publicity. It's called The Crown action means creating a respectful and open world for natural hair specifically for black women being able to wear their natural hair..

Okay, let's start first and foremost for people who have let's say absentee ballots. Yes, they put this off until the last minute, you know, we all do it off. What do they do with those ballots as of tomorrow? So if you have an absentee ballot, you need to return it to a drop box. You can do one of two things to drop box location which again you can find on our vote in KY job. Website to figure out where those locations are throughout your counties, or you can put it in the mail the thing you cannot do. Let stress is one. You cannot show up to a polling location tomorrow and hand it into a co-worker. They are not able to accept it..

"This for six months. Now, I'm probably should do it and you can make that happen again by using our website go vote in KY so you can get that information. No problem. But yeah, you definitely would encourage you to make sure that you have made a plan well in advance and Tuesday and let's talk about Saturdays cuz I know this is a great option for people as well cuz they can vote if they have to work all week if they still want to home. They can do that this Saturday. Yeah for a loan or working parents Saturdays are good option to get out and go vote in person. So that's a unique thing to kentuckians this year. You've never had the option to do that one. So we know people are are busy voting receiving you're working during the week. So that Saturday afternoon is a good new options for a buddy. Hope they take advantage of it. And I know we talked about this before Jeremy you voted early as well or did you mail in your absentee ballot? Which one did you say too early in person in the in Kenton County and at the senior center or senior page or whatever it's called and I know you had the same experience at my husband did which was you know, flying smooth very quickly and person that seems to be the across-the-board kind of story that things are moving along quickly, correct, even when you do experience a line, it does appear to be moving very quickly. I know my husband waited about 45 minutes or so last week. I need to go vote this week in Boone County. So hopefully experienced that but a lot of my fellow bootcampers to tell me the line is very very quickly. They've been very pleased with them and Brent Brent even said that he went on Saturday down in the County Center down in Covington and said it only took him about five minutes. Excellent. Well, why don't you do it early absentee or election day, we encourage you to vote and it sounds like kentuckians are taken up that charge a million already and we got a week to go A Plus 8 days till like Kristen. Thank you so much. We appreciate you joining us today. Great. Thanks guys. Have a good one. All right, and you know the as that is dominated a lot of the headlines certainly wage, but there's a lot going on in Northern Kentucky there always is and I know I think I drove Dixie Highway maybe six seven times a day. I feel like I'm on a line and I just noticed a sign came the other day and just found out the story as well..

"I'm to the Northern Kentucky Spotlight. Thank you. Once again for joining us here as we approached really big big news about the election. We're going to talk about that all coming your way ahead in California Road. Thank you so much for joining us and as always or the last couple of weeks. We're joined by of course, Jeremy Schram the brains behind the operation over there the director of marketing over there at the Northern Kentucky chamber and Kristoff Baldwin vice president of public affairs and Communications from the chamber. We appreciate you joining us today Kristen. Thanks for having me. All right, so we are going to start things off by talking about what the top of everyone's mind right now and it is a big day tomorrow early voting starts in Northern Kentucky. It's right Catherine early voting starts tomorrow and millions hockey that's right away from election day, but kind of lets backstop a little bit about where we've come and the last couple of years about absentee voting and drop boxes. So the absentee deadline state of Kentucky to request an absentee ballot ended on Friday and Friday at 5:00 and Or six hundred and fifty seven thousand kentuckians requested there about that's about 8% of all registered voters pretty impressive. What does that mean though? As far as I know a lot of people are very concerned about like, how does this do? We want to mail it in do we want to bring it actually to a Dropbox or to where it needs to be counted what tell us about that process? Yep. So the state of Kentucky we took off or drop box locations will be numerous Drop Box locations across each County. You can check out where they're located at vote in KY, we have a broken down by County to where that Drop Box location is summer. Summer outside so you can access those 24/7 but that definitely is an option for seeing this year. So now like so we got the drop boxes and and all these like mailing ballots and we said early voting starts tomorrow how to how.

"Well, you would not believe the number of patients that I see that are looking to this is kind of a beacon there. They want to be part of this they feel part of life. So, you know when I speak about this, I always talk about all the cancer Fighters everyone in this building is so pumped to be able to deliver this to the people who need it and and you know, I think about myself as a cancer survivor the stress of the diagnosis the stress of that first couple of weeks uncertainty and the discomfort emotionally that comes with that. I know now that we can walk a patient downstairs after a tough talk and immediately walk into a cancer Family Care office for a private counselor who can help give the patient tools to do with that. And so when I look at the people who are going to enter the system and to the center for first time probably just going to hang out in the lobby for first week so I can watch people walk into that Atrium and see what we've now got in our community for all of us that need this kind of care. And you know, obviously we want fewer people to get that cancer diagnosis and to have as few people as possible in this brand-new cancer center. But but Kerry from the community's perspective and the The Business Leaders that you speak with when you know looking at this and knowing what a difference a Cancer Center like this is going to make what is their reaction when they hear about this again this world-class send-off opening. Well, what what Doug and I've been doing, you know through covet since oh probably the last four or five months is every Wednesday. We've been allowed to take a few people through to tour package and as it's as it's come together, you know, it's just been amazing to see it. Aesthetically. It's beautiful it truly it is beautiful. But what is going to happen? I mean, it's just it's it's obvious, you know the efficiency of care and the way it was all put together. It's just I mean, it's really it's just it's so it's it's it's a warm bath Writing space and it just just it's there's so much care in every detail. So that's been really exciting to show our major donors. But what's what's not going to be even more exciting is you know, now that their patients coming through the doors is to show that impact, you know, they've made that initial investment that you know took a bit but Doug and I just shared us as part of a vision but now the exciting part for us is this vision becoming a reality and to be able to share that impact with them and you know, the patient testimonials. I know Christy Nelson. I don't know if you know Christy but she is she's the co-chair of the cancer center campaign and she was one of the one people that we came we toured through and thought she was emotional. I mean to see it all put together and just to know that this level of care was now available in her own Community if it truly made her emotional so it obvious off. We're thrilled that it's here in Northern Kentucky. But doctor Florida, they're Kentucky in general with cancer rates. It is at a point that among the nation's worst..

"Away everyone according clear here and I'm joined today by mayor any schauble mayor of the city of Alexandria. Some people may not know that it's the home to one of the county's two courthouses and I believe is one of the oldest cities in the county maybe northern, Kentucky not sure on the the ear, but it's also happens to my hometown. So the special place in my heart. So thank you to marry shovel for brain to chat today and tell us a little bit what's going on in the. EXCITED TO HER Well great while we'll start off with Kevin. Easy question. So what do you think are northern Kentucky's greatest assets. What might you say to someone who's thinking about relocating to Northern Kentucky but specifically Alexandria? A donkey and especially Alexandra is just a big community. You know that from growing up here everybody kind of knows everybody's related to somebody in it's just such a home town small town feel but you're also close to the major you know since the Cincinnati fifteen minutes to the south the you're in the middle of basically God's country with rolling hills, cows, fifteen minutes, North Year, downtown, Cincinnati. So city of Alexandria motto is where the city meets the country. That's that's truly how it is, and so it's it really is the best of both worlds with the cows and major sports teams as far as reds and Bengals, and such like that. Nine that's very well put. It. Didn't I didn't know this city's motto for Awhile. But growing up I would always when I tried to tell people about where I came from especially from other parts a state I always said I'm kind of on the suburban fringe they didn't live in a subdivision, but it's like five Manson, your deep division five minutes deep in the country. So it's really really is kind of straddling the two worlds in Well, I have to say so. So I've been seen a lot of development happening in Alexander's specifically with residential development in I know there's more to be planned as well. How do you anticipate this impacting transportation in the city education workforce all those important things right. We are growing leaps and bounds. We have arcadia subdivision. So over eleven hundred housing units just in that one subdivision by itself that's the size of some some of our cities in Campbell county basically We also have a three other active subdivisions going on, and so we're getting some traffic for sure on that, we're working with the Kentucky State of. Kentucky and sometimes we try and fix one issue. It just creates something else that we didn't anticipate but that we're figuring that out and trying to work hard on that as far as education goes I've been in contact with Dr Rust who's the Superintendent Campbell County schools he assures me they have plenty of space.

Should States Be Allowed To Declare Bankruptcy?

"Many states are facing severe financial shortfalls because of the corona virus outbreak several Republican leaders in Congress including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have suggested those states declare bankruptcy but federal law prevents states from doing that Kentucky public radio's Ryland Barton reports that McConnell's cash strapped home state is especially vulnerable Kentucky was struggling before the corona virus it's entered years of escalating budget cuts that go back to the two thousand eight financial collapse and now almost a third of the state's workforce has filed for unemployment this is led to a massive drop in income and sales tax collections which make up more than three quarters of the money Kentucky brings in every year democratic governor Andy Beshear is one of many governors who say they need more financial help from the federal government during the pandemic if the next Kerr sacked package does not include budget assistant for states and counties we will be hit with a rough for recession it will last longer and it will be harder to dig out of Kentucky senior senator Mitch McConnell doesn't support adding more money to prop up state budgets at least not without changes changes like letting states filed for bankruptcy here's McConnell on the Hugh Hewitt show recently I would sort of imply rollout that is the is the bankruptcy route if you save some settings and there's no good reason for it not to be available but cities counties even school districts are allowed to file for bankruptcy just not states that has always been the case for the entire history of the United States that's northern Kentucky university law professor ten captain he says Congress could pass a law allowing states to file for bankruptcy but then states would have to pass their own laws allowing it and then it would likely be challenged for violating the constitution's contract clause the main reason is that because there is so that states shouldn't be able to pass laws to relieve themselves of their own death orderlies the deaths of private debtors bankruptcy will allow a court to restructure a state's finances the biggest example of a city declaring bankruptcy was Detroit in two thousand thirteen as part of that process the court required city retirees to take a four and a half percent benefits cut and give up cost of living adjustments university of Pennsylvania law professor David Skeel says states should be allowed to declare bankruptcy he says it would allow sacrifices to be distributed more evenly absent bankruptcy who is the ticket yeah yep there's financial distrust of the state yes beneficiaries of state services president trump has weighed in on Twitter asking why should taxpayers bail out quote poorly run states like Illinois the couple has since softened his suggestion that states be allowed to declare bankruptcy saying it would have been optional and most wouldn't have done it anyway but with so many states struggling it's still an issue capturing attention from state houses to Capitol

How Will Food Banks Meet Demand Related to COVID-19?

"With children at home and countless adults out of work food pantries and food banks are more important than ever for many. Americans. They've been the difference between eating and not eating for years with the novel. Corona virus pandemic that demand for food could soar higher than we've seen in our lifetimes. And so what do we do to ensure these essential local food pantries? Stay afloat honestly. It won't be easy. We took for example our local Atlanta Community Food Bank which as one of the ten largest food banks in the world distributes more than sixty million meals to more than seven hundred fifty five thousand people the Metro Atlanta area and north Georgia. But maintaining. Those numbers isn't only concern. The Food Bank is usually staffed by hundreds of volunteers. Now it has zero it discontinued its volunteer programs to help curb. The spread of the virus and the staff is brainstorming. New Approaches to tackle covered nineteen had on we spoke with Kyle Wade President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. He said we have to adopt distribution methods and minimize the number of workers coming in and out and instead of asking people to come into pantries to shop as they wouldn't a grocery store. We're asking Pantries prepackaged food into bags and boxes for drive-thru distributions where the client never leaves the car other food banks across the country are similarly adapting in Ohio. One of the earliest states to impose restaurant closures and self-isolation rules foodbanks stopped serving hot food and began distributing brown bag grabbing go meals according to thirteen. Abc In Toledo staff members at local food pantry. Helping hands of Saint. Louis are wearing gloves and in some case masks and they're using tape on the sidewalk show clients where to stand for proper social distancing while waiting for food their team had to stop accepting donations entirely after curbing its volunteer program for safety and harvest. Hope Food Bank in South Carolina shifted its distribution model to drive through only to limit person to person contact with covert nineteen shuttering businesses across the country. The Need to feed the hungry grows rapidly at the same time. Grocery stores are overrun with scared. Shoppers though rest assured supply chain experts. Say That toilet. Paper supplies will be restocked and general food supplies should become more normal as panic buying subsides. So how food banks access. The bulk of supplies they need for one. Wade says the Atlanta Community Food Bank will lean heavily on partner. Farmers he said farms have access produce. And that's a big part of our supply chain right now so we'll rely on that even more because of pre existing grocery store partnerships food pantries can source bulk products quickly and with better margins than consumers. That's why food banks around. The country are asking community members to donate funds instead of food. Wade said you can give me a canned food costs you a dollar or you can give me a dollar and I can get nine cans of food. This is the same. Even outside disaster times for the Atlanta Community Food Bank funds are also more essential than ever because they like many other nonprofits had to cancel fundraising events in March of two thousand nineteen. Their hunger walk run. Generated eighty thousand dollars with ten thousand participants. But this year it's been canceled. School closures across the country could leave up to thirty million kids without meals according to CNBC. That's because the national school lunch program feeds up to thirty million children per day. The correlated breakfast programme beads fourteen point seven million children daily in the child and Adult Care Food Program serves more than six point. One million children schools closed national and local groups are doing their best to keep children fed in North Carolina for example no kid hungry and see is continuously updating list of free school meal locations in Northern Kentucky restaurants like Poseidon's Pizza Company are supplementing local school cafeteria efforts by offering free small pizzas to K. Through twelve kids. According to Fox nineteen celebrity chef Jose Andres turned his New York City and Washington. Dc Michelin Star restaurants into takeaway kitchens to help those in need. Employees are asking for seven dollars per meal. Although those who can't afford to pay don't have to under his also working with other restaurants to serve as community kitchens to cook for world central kitchen and he's calling on Moore to do the same. Where possible end food? Pantries can help with this. To the Atlanta Community Food Bank is bringing supplemental food to five local school districts adding to the resources local cafeterias have in place for daily meals for children and their families. Wade said providing about ten thousand pounds. That's forty five hundred kilos of food per week per site right now. That's about a quarter of a million pounds of food. We expect to provide these schools altogether. The feeding American network which the Atlanta Community Food Bank partner member of is taking unprecedented steps to ensure its members are able to feed people in their local neighborhoods. Feeding America launched a covert Nineteen Response Fund a National Food and fundraising effort to support people facing hunger. They're working with government leaders to ensure its response include support and flexibility for Federal Nutrition programs ensuring that twenty two million children who rely on school meals have access to food outside of the classroom building an inventory of emergency food boxes to distribute food banks as need increases and providing emergency grants to food banks

The Attempted Murder of 'Selena'

"The mid two thousand I was a bartender at a pretty sleazy Gentlemen's Club in Northern Kentucky. Hell Yeah you are. Can you smell well. It can help menthol cigarettes in the air right across from the river right across the river from Cincinnati. Money was great. I was in my twenty s and I've many crazy stories to share. Here's one Elia. Most of the dancers used cabs to get to and from work. This was in the ages before Uber. At the end of the night some cabs would be lined up out front waiting leading for the ladies to get off work a young lady in her mid twenties. We'll call her SELENA. I don't know her real name. got into one of the cabs to head home for the night just like she did every the other night. This night was extremely cold even for Midwest Standards Snow and ice on the ground negative temps freezing during the ride. The driver pulled off the road to quote go a different way to avoid bad roads. He then pulled over and attacked her. He'd beat her sexually assaulted her slit her throat with a screwdriver and dumped her on the side of a rural Rome guy. This bad ass woke up in a ditch and crawled to a house about half a mile away I want to get home. Holy Shit thankfully at four. Am some kind person answered the door and called nine one one. The doctor said the bitter cold saved her life because she was lying being knocked out in that snowy ditch the blood and the wound froze saving her from bleeding to death. Oh my God. They did catch the driver and he went to prison for rape and attempted murder her it turns out he was a convicted rapist. WHO had only been out of prison for a year? Holy like wherever you are Selena. I hope you're living your best life. Wow Aw no-name chill is not
