Rie director reporting four nine news. Where incredibly vulnerable as a country to all of this. And i have a sneaking suspicion that if anybody's like under the age of eighteen and considering a like a job that you're going to have job protection in job security in for the next thirty years go into it because we need a lot more people going into it sort of like discovering this because businesses were already finding out are incredibly vulnerable omarosa finding out that government agencies are incredibly vulnerable to this. And it's not going away when we you know it's like this idea when when somebody pays up i know it's like they gotta get back to work. They gotta get back to business when somebody pays up. It provides further incentive for somebody to do it to somebody else. And that's what's happening right now. Crews would and something that's been Very difficult to track on a county by county basis but We just recently figured out how to do that. So we are seeing some good news. "Welcome back friday presented by the comedy ford looking forward to to our interview coming up Later on with christie. Buke louis really. I am really about that. She's regular at comedy. Works in denver teaches comedy classes at rise theater in denver she's been featured on nbc's. I look and laugh on fox Really happy to be having her joining us a little bit later on in the program. So stay tuned for that Let's get into some news for northern colorado shall we As police investigate and attempted sexual assault in greeley this by morgan mackenzie outta the tribunal juvenile victim gave an account of the incident valise telling officers the attempted sexual assault. Happened about one thirty a. M. sunday near the intersection of avenue and seventeenth street. According to the news release posted by the department Information about the incident has been heavily circulated on social media pages. It's that is very true. Very true as you. You see the The comments come down on on the tribune's page and these other pages. There's a lot of. There's a lot of Emotion out there rightfully. So i don't know how you wouldn't get emotional about this and about what's going on you know there's one comment saying that That it definitely wasn't attempted Demaim cronyn clearly stated that it happened And the wondering why that should be has not reported that But i obviously we can only go off of the official reports right now And and from herat what we know and and that's just what the police investigation has put out there so far. According to the release the department is taking the incident very seriously officers immediately opened investigation and spoke with the victim. So it's obviously it's still ongoing Doffs not believe there is an ongoing threat or danger to the greely community. Which i mean i don't know right. I tend to disagree with that. If there's a man who's willing to do this once You know probably going to happen again. And i guess i shouldn't even say man i don't know if it is a man But you just more times than not. That's what it is since the victim is juvenile and they reported incident is sensitive nature. The department is prohibited by law from releasing most of the information according to the release. But they do ask if you've got any information relating to the case the department is asking people to contact -tective leisurely schmidt at nine seven zero three five zero ninety five seventy two nine seven zero three five zero ninety five seventy two. These stories are tough. I mean it's tough especially in a community like we talked so much about how northern colorado's growing we talked so much about how fast grease growing and how it can be losing some of that small town feel were still. It's still relatively tight knit community right and win something like this happens. It's disturbing it's disgusting. And it's worrisome. And you have a lot of emotions come straight to the forefront and you're gonna see this i mean there there's a reason why there's so many comments and there's so many on social media and why the tribune even felt obligated to put it in there. They fell to say. Hey i know there's a lot going on on the social media world here's what we can legally do and the people are mad at the tribune. I don't think you should be in. It's not every day. I go up to bat for the greeley tribune but they've got allow the due process to play out here. They can't just come out and say okay. Here's what family said. That's fact that's that's irresponsible journalism. We scrutinize the media. Ii scrutinize the media. I'm in the damn thing. But i scrutinize the media. I would be more upset with greeley tribute if they came out and said. Here's this here's this. Here's this they have to let this go. And i know it's frustrating especially for especially for you know the family. I know it's difficult. I did like this. I going to share this one comment. That was here. Says you're negative comments. Do nothing to stop this predator at large. Share your information. Not your opinion. I also love the response. I can give my opinion. You certainly can well done. And i don't like look this. This looks like it's the family. That's all over the place. Because i want to. I'd want to have that person custody. Probably wanna do way worse that if it was my kid who had been out there. But now's the time don't be getting on the tribune. Don't be on it because at the end of the day. There's only so much they can do. They have to allow that due process to go Let's move to another story here out of the greeley tribune as well. Visitors get turned away rocky. Mountain national park unaware the reservation system. This was a story that we talked about two months ago. Now i believe And it's it's a strange one. I don't think you should have to have a reservation to go hiking. I just don't like that in my head. That doesn't make any sense to me like okay. First of all. I should say i hate hiking so i don't ever have to worry about this but i don't like the idea that okay. Let's we're trying to get away match to get one with nature. But i gotta get a reservation. I don't like that in my weird right. Are you hiking gay. Do enjoy hiking yes. Is it weird you the to set a reservation now to go outside to go into iraq national park. You have to have the reservation system. Yeah i do think it's a little odd. I don't necessarily always go to like national park for that reason. Like i'll go up to boulder fort collins anywhere in that jar. Yeah it's a little odd. And i think it can be kind of like a deterrent for people to from going. If they wanted to get out. Yeah well and it's people are already frustrated about it. There's a ranger at the guard shack. Like if i had that job and this was announced. I would've quit that day. There's no way i'm gonna sit there. He even said we're gonna get yelled at nonstop all day this summer. Yeah no thanks. I don't think. I don't think i want to Deal with that. But it's already starting as the weather gets nicer this by john mayer and the no out of estes park and there's gonna be blowback right after turning people away who don't have the required timed entry reservations. After they waited an hour in line in a bumper to bumper backup. I e everything that we're talking about. Now i hate so i'm not going to have to worry about it. At least the that's the way it was last friday morning. The reservations policy went into effect for the second season. One guard said we're gonna get yell at nonstop all day this summer. It's going to be a nightmare. I've already seen some pretty hostile interactions. And it's like it's like people aren't nice especially when they don't get what they want. You seen somebody who's traded a waiter or waitress in in.

"The shanin agency. Here's tanner swint. Good thursday morning or the colorado. Welcome in it is thursday right at this point in the four day weeks that it's like why does this week feel longer than other weeks. Even though we've only been you know this is the third day at it right. Math math is hard this early in the morning. Thanks for being with us. I m went. This is the article especially studios rank. Kelly during the production work for us as always happy to be with. You day. the lineup. Today's guests can look a little different Then then what we normally see thursday miles. Boom heart is out on vacation He's down to mexico. Actually so good for miles definitely definitely jealous of that but mayor. John gates greasy of greeley mayor. John gates will step in at nine. Thirty five get an update on what's going on around the city as as things open up What did they sing from. From their side of the city of greeley government buildings and things like that We'll talk with john gates about all of that. Then mike. we'll get fired. Up with. Mike moore is in the second hour. It's going to be going to be a fun show. Obviously we'll get sports. We're all a little bit of a big game tonight. I don't know if you've heard but game six of the round one playoffs for the denver. Nuggets the portland. Trailblazers happens tonight as well. So we've got all of that to get to an much much more. Let's start first with news. Four northern colorado starting first with unc assistant swim coach former greeley west graduate. He's the state champ. He will be competing at the olympic trials. That's right This piece by jaden watson fisher out of the out of the greeley tribune brody lewis hired. This year is headed omaha nebraska to compete for a place on the united states olympic team. He brody says. I'm super excited to finish my swimming career at such a high level. Meet lewis said in a news release. I'm grateful to represent. Unc and the city of greeley at the olympic trials lewis will compete in the one hundred at two hundred breastroke after qualifying events in twenty twenty due to the covid. Nineteen pandemic to. Tokyo were postponed until this summer. Always cool to see those those local stories make that and and who knows you get out there and maybe you have yourself a day and all of a sudden. We've got a local greeley kate in the olympics. He told the tribune in january. This will likely be his final meet before retiring from competition. He said for me. It's kind of that victory lap cherry on top in two thousand sixteen. I missed the cut by seven. Tenths seven tenths of a second. I was a senior in high school at the time. So it's been a goal of mine for a lewis said at the time it's something i can't pass up because a lot of swimmers swimming at that meat is their career highlight so he is going to go and try. It doesn't sound. He sounds like he said either. Way right if you qualify as it might just be the cherry on top. He did go to college at university of utah. He's the nc double a. b..

"More fun world that so that's going on as well. There's several upgrades going on. Throughout the course of the club. A lot of things people are like. Oh you know. I'd like to join but i don't know about money this this or this. You have a wide variety of membership options Whether it's golf or just a social social memberships lower it for sure. So for right now. We are open for membership. Where we've it was a busy april and not gonna lie so i got a lot of new members so that's going to be great. It's be a great summer if you'd like to join a social number. Let's say you're not a golfer or maybe you are thinking about golfing but you're not sure there's no initiation fee so that's a savings of fifteen hundred dollars And you know it was a minimal monthly dues and you can still call up to ten times in one year and maybe just get your feet wet That's an option. And then we also have a preview golf membership Just because it's only this month basically you can join Very minimally And you know it's a one year commitment but it's it's a great way to get to know. The club gets the members with a less Monetary commitment upfront and then at the end of one year you can decide you know what i didn't play that much call so but i love the club so i'll stay social or you could say you know what i i love this. I need to you know. Join full boat and then you just join so you have some options there. That's that's interesting too because People are willing to to do a trial run almost so to speak. So you're you guys are willing to put put your reputation out there and your money where your mouth is. 'cause that i mean a full year membership but that that's pretty cool to offer for and then just give them an opportunity to to say yet or no at the end of it. Was that your decision. It was that was your idea to do this. It was my idea. Okay all right right right. That's the us. I'm just saying that's gutsy but that's just how much confidence you have in the country club radio. I feel like it's been there for a long time. I feel like a lot of people drive by it every day. And they don't realize that it's a great community and it's really fun place. It's not you know it's a place it's a gathering place. It's a home away from home. We're talking with claire. Carter the membership director of the greeley country club. Well and that was something that we talked about Two when we when we met last week is that so many public courses got so overwhelmed last year that you could get ti- time maybe if you're lucky could jump in but then it would take six hours to golf. And that's one of the benefits of of being a member at a club raid. I mean correct. We have an less as a golf tournament. Going on and there's inclement weather you don't have. You don't have a problem making tee times which is really nice and you don't have to spend six or seven hours on a golf course either at the country club you know we. Actually we like to keep the pace of play at four hours if not under So if you're a golfer that likes to kind of get in and get out and just you know do your thing and not want to spend a whole day on the golf course and really country clubs your place. It is awesome. And you you see a lot of people out there. That know what they're doing. And i mean that helps as well Why what set you guys apart. What sets you apart from. Other other country clubs. I brag on yourself a little bit here. I want to hear 'cause we talk even off the radio the passions are. I can tell you really love what you do and believe in what you're doing out there so so what set yourself apart. Well the golf course obviously has been there one hundred years it's beautiful it's challenging but not too challenging It's a lot of fun. The golf course is. I think second-to-none in northern colorado. So i would start with the golf course If you're a non golfer it's it's really a family place. I don't know how to describe it. Except i've got we've got i've got so many families that are third generations there. I've got people i have. You know families that come out for mother's day brunch and there's you know ninety year old grandpa and the kids you know down at the end of the table and you know it's it's really. It's really a family friendly place and it's a great golf course and you know i think it speaks for itself that we've been there for one hundred years and in in a small slash. Big town right. That's pretty interesting. It is it is for sure. Claire carter membership director the greeley country club. Anything else that we may have missed that we we would hit on a pretty cool event coming up on the twenty four that we're going to be out there talking about a little bit later on as well but What else did i miss. Anything anything else that you want to get out of the people. Yeah i other than you. This is the time to join. you know. We're getting rid of the pool at the end of the month which is going to be amazing whenever big pool party Music food everything And the pool is so much fun and amazing. It's a great place to be in the summer And like tanner said. We are getting ready to do some charity. Golf tournaments one of them is coming up on the twenty fourth. And that's no co unify benefit Youth in northern colorado. And we'll be a actually do live show. Then that'll be really fun so i don't know i think i just wanna do a shout out to northern colorado in greeley in particular and say you know if you've never come to the country club if you've never been there if you have any questions come out and see me. Just come out and visit. What's so what's the best way for them to get a hold of you if they've got questions after this interview or they're looking at potentially joining or or walking through the club at least what's the best way for them to get a hold of you. I mean i hate to say it but the best way is probably to go on to our website My information's there. You can always contact me through that way and then we can set up a tour. Were you can stop by. I mean happens every day. People stop in and say well. I really am curious. I've never been here and we really are interested in swim team or were interested in golf this year. Or what have you so. It's really any way that works best for for anyone who's interested in membership in that That website is really c c dot. Org if you wanna look they're really cc. Dot or claire. Thank you so much for your time. I it was great to get you down here on the radio and see wasn't too bad. Was it not not at all. Thank stand all right. Let's.

Let's get into news four northern colorado man after the news about see us his you you and see all these colleges requiring the vaccine right. I know i got a lot of backlash kind of right off. The bad aims community college to offer free summer tuition for some welcoming residents in case. You're wondering if this is just happens to be a coincidence that they announced this just a couple of weeks after the lash back from From the decision on unc nc uncc's it's not This and alenia the greeley tribune angels four campuses in the county greeley fort leptin loveland and windsor announced. The in a news release issued late wednesday morning. Students must register for classes by june first. So you've got a little bit of time but you gotta get in there and get registered The past year has been tough financially for many people and our hope is to relieve some of the financial burden for current and new students As they work through this That was the aims president. There talking this is. I mean it's good timing for community college to strike. you got people right wrong or indifferent. They're a little upset about that. The well this college can't tell me what to do. I'll go spend my money elsewhere and for aims to announce something like this now. And don't get me wrong. I'm sure aims was going to do this anyways. I'm just saying the timing of the release. I mean there's obviously a reason for that. There's obviously a reason that they're just picking right now to announce that a good for them. I said i. We've got people who work here that have gone through aims community college. I've had a close close friends who have gone through their different trade. Schools aims does a pretty good job. They really do. And you factor in the tuition prices. It's crazy the difference. It's crazy the difference especially right now with such a shortage of of of workers in almost every industry. I don't know why why you wouldn't consider going. And grabbing a trait degree at at ames and look their new students and even existing students. If they apply for classes by june. I it could be eligible for a of for free summer semester. Free of tuition and we didn't we just see front range community. College was doing this too so a couple community college. Well they they got a grant right. Did they were able to To give out from each community college did but pretty cool to see these universities These these community colleges stepping up and helping helping these highschoolers that it may be just getting out of high school and try to figure out what to do and you know last year. It was hard on highschoolers. Especially if you're a senior all these plans you're going to do this this this and this and then boom none of it happened so pretty cool For people to get started More news for northern colorado. And you might ask this. Tanner wiry reading the story. Well i'll get there just second. Cherry creeks mark johnson interest. Twenty twenty one season on verge of breaking chances all time win records. Spike al numina. The denver post mark johnson in cherry creek. He's been there since nineteen seventy three in nineteen seventy-three cherry creek. Look a whole hell of a lot different than it does now. But now forty nine years later. Cherry creek Has become just a a as as kind of and puts it in athletic behemoth and johnson has remained the constant a pillar of excellence in greenwood village. So the seventy six year old enters the twenty twenty one season one victory shy of tying the chats all time wins mark which is of course held by jim dally out of eaten The win mark of eight hundred seven. So by eaton's jim danley on the precipice of history. Johnson credits is longevity success and status as a car out of baseball icon to the groundwork laid in his early years on the job long before the bruins won a big school record eight state titles There's no doubt. I mean there's there's no doubt in my mind this this was gonna eventually get broken. Right what danley had set up but still with that being said It took forever. I mean it took a very long time danley. Call johnson's imminent eight hundred. Seven thousand eight hundred eight victories. Which could come in the opener. May six that molin which is today in. It may eight at tom. Mccollum field against the mustangs quote a stunning record. I'm happy for him. Said daily johnson's college classmate at northern colorado records are made to be broken as the old saying goes and it's cool because we took different paths. He was the metropolitan city guy. And i took the small town road in what he's done with his program of cherry creeks ability to stay consistently nothing short of incredible so kind words thereby Daily and when mark johnson is going to break his record this year. And i mean that whole whole situation sucks right. That happened with with jim. Danley over in eaten. Because there's i don't care what side that deal you were on. What he had done in. Eden was remarkable. I just think if things hadn't gone haywire just think if there wasn't some issues that popped up within him and his coaching staff hell just think these signs the damn paperwork did they had in front of him then all of a sudden that eight hundred seven mark for jim danley probably olot. I mean is it reasonable to think you know and four or five six years since it's happened. Is it reasonable to think he could have had close to a thousand wind right..

"We're not getting that data getting a lot of requests for that. And i will continue to sort of ask the car hospital association for more data on who. These people are going to be sort of helpful to know. I suspect that they're going to be a younger age population and they have vaccinate. Yeah And so that would tell us a lot so i don't expect any sort of major changes. What the state is doing right now. The state is moving ahead Really wanted to give them more flexibility to the counties and i think there are plenty of people in those counties who will say. It's time for the state to do that. And i would expect that continue. We're talking with. Chris van director reporting for nine news. All right chris. Let's switch over to the the george floyd trial going on. There was the judge refusing to sequester the jury. Following unrest in minneapolis. This according to the associated press This is already starting to take some twists and turns. Yeah so what happened is yesterday. There was a shooting brooklyn center. I believe that's the name of it. That's a it's basically just very close to minneapolis. Part of minneapolis. Essentially and that there was a twenty year old who was shot after an apparent traffic stop. And so there's there had been unrest in that section of minneapolis overnight and Apparently one of the jurors actually lives in that community so there had been a move to sort of sequester. The jury early. The jury was going to be sequestered. Anyways wants jury deliberations started. That had been the plan for a while. And i haven't been paying attention. I don't know if that's i don't know if the judges ruled on that or not in terms of sequestration unusual these days i think people sometimes people have this old school mindset. That jury gets requested all the time. It doesn't happen here in. Colorado almost never happens Judges are low to moved jury trials away from the community in which they happened. That doesn't happen a whole lot either in colorado profile cases and also. They don't want this to be tremendously disruptive on the jurors lives and so there's not this sort of big push there had been decades ago to sort of sequestered juries and hotel rooms for the period of the trial. That's been the case here And it'll be interesting to see what the judge decides in terms of that request by. I believe the prosecution to Sequester the jury starting now so chris. You've been following along with this. What have been some key takeaways throughout this trial because we we've talked a little bit about it the ramifications and the the effects of this trial in this case are going to be long lasting and widespread. Yeah i i said this late last week and i believe wholeheartedly..

"Patrol. he's sitting there and hears about three gunshots from the thirty six hundred block of thirty fifth avenue. He shows up obviously comes flying over their shows up. He sees a large group of people crouching down near the front entrance of a bar and grill as he was approaching after another four shots in the parking lot northwest of the interest so once he gets there he. Here's another four gough that this point. The officer draws his pistol orders. Everyone to the ground. No injuries luckily came out of this but they finally did find the victim or excuse me not the victim But they also did come out and find the perpetrator They found two vehicles damaged by the gunfire. The suspect was identified as a man with a distinctive face and neck tattoos. An anonymous tip identified him as eric. Buccio twenty seven years old a witness. Identify buccio as the suspect in a photo lineup. Police also reviews surveillance video at the bar. So this is where they see Buccio can kind of flashing a black object in his waistband at another man at signaling for him to step outside according to arrest records but again. No injuries in this No injuries in this arrest. Anything like that but The arrest affidavit. For the suspect indicates the victim wouldn't cooperate with police due to the victims gang affiliation But they did arrest buccio boo. He was booked in a kennedy jail in the early morning hours of february. Six on suspicion of attempted first degree assault felony menacing and reckless endangerment as well as drugs and weapons charges he remains in jail as of yesterday afternoon but that That's a hell of a story for that police officer. I mean that that guy to know exactly like to identify exactly where that comes from his remarkable. Because i'd be driving around here something. Don't don't think anything of it. But he is. Soon as he was an in patrol he was a couple of blocks away and could tell instantly where that was at took off over. There got there and took care of the incident This story again coming. Out of the tribunals well it's not really. This is just one of a bunch of stories that i'm going to get to about this But we're starting to see some of the impacts from that cold weather that we had late last week on piper's flooding that we saw and the university of northern colorado unc. Dorm rooms were. They were no no different than anybody else. They had a waterline. That broke that floods The that flooded a couple of floors from laney out of the tribune by eight residents of the dormitory were displaced after fire. Sprinkler line frozen. Broke leading the less than fifty thousand dollars worth of damage. So i don't think it was that severe but they Ended up. I think there is Six apartments on the first second and third floors were impact by the flooding for the line. Seven students and one faculty member were impacted by the break so they were moved over to different dorm. Everything's good Good to go there but like the dorms or crappy enough to live in on may maybe not unc. Okay but just the dorm experiences. A whole My freshman year. I mean there was a lot of things that i absolutely hated about my dorm. Luckily though i never got it flooded because that would really suck and ruined a lot of my stuff. I would have been outraged at that. And then there's nothing they can do but The these cold temperatures man they just been taken a toll miles bloom harp Great friend of the show how to the colorado and has story up in the colorado on talking about pfa firefighters inundated with calls of frozen sprinkler lines bursting after cold snap so this is just all over the place. They were They were calling the fire. The fire authority Out all week you know. And any bierbauer said firefighters responded to forty one calls a frozen fire suppression sprinkler lines bursting february eleventh through the nineteenth including twenty four on february sixteenth. And fourteen. every fiftieth. So that though of course. Those were the the coldest days that we had the agency fort collins. Timothy had six such calls in the four months before the record setting cold. Snap so i i was wondering about stats like this. About how many people you know. It was a stress on the system to have such a large influx of calls. But we didn't have to call an extra shifts that's always good is unique because of the long stretch of cold and then the warmer temperatures contributed to the problems. This from bierbauer With the Putin fire Authority the one thing on that too. You know tie in a lot of what we talk about here to take agriculture that back and forth between cold. The hot hot to cold. That will get a lot of animals six. Be ready and be watching that as well. We're going to talk about that with rob environment tomorrow. from livestock exchange about the severity of being you know flipping that switch. Because it's it's tough on. Animals is tough on those animals outdoors to be able to do that. The other thing just to keep in mind too and that that work out of the coal to but make sure that water Those animals have water and and it's a broken up and able to be reached as well. That's news four northern colorado. Before we go want to say thanks to practice physical therapy and sports medicine. They've got locations in eaton and angry as well as in brighton They just opened that one up but don't waste that surgery it's expensive. Nobody likes going under the knife and regardless of age regardless of physical stature. A surgery alone won't fix you. You have to be able to bounce back from the surgery. It's not a natural thing right to go underneath the knife to to be put out and then to be cut open is not natural. I no surprise surprise but when that happens you have to get your body trained back and and say hey you can trust this because the body is amazing. You hurt your ankle. It starts putting more of a power And more of a load on a different part of your body right and you have to learn to reuse that stuff prone physical therapy and sports medicine will teach you how to get back and better than you were through a number of different different techniques for your age range for your demographic for your wait for all of that. What event are you looking forward to the most to being able to get back out and go in go to whatever you're most looking forward to attending when the time comes concert sporting event beer festival etc. Which one is it. Got some coming in chad saying all of the above Ryan saying red rocks. Gab f which is the great american beer festival and cigar festival so There's a lot of people looking forward to those things and you know we keep inching closer to this point. We talked about the cova numbers. Hospitalizations are down under four hundred for the first time Since who knows when and we're inching closer and closer to this being a reality. And i feel like people are starting to forget. Maybe maybe not. But i feel like people are starting to forget a little bit about. Just how awesome these events are and how awesome it is to gather with so many strangers. The with something that unites you unites. Everybody right if you go to a concert All of the people there are fans of that concert of that artist. If you go to appear festival there all beer lovers if you go to a sporting event you get half the people cheering for the team. Have them cheering for the other team. That togetherness is awesome. And i m missing that so much and look. My job requires a lot of A lot of running around Definitely i'm definitely of that status. So when i think i took these for granted a little bit going to this because i saw so many people who is this and that it's like i'm not missing much. I'll go home instead like win. Things open back up and we start having these concerts and these events you will catch me at every single one of them for maybe the first month or two but i am missing these so much and i'm so much looking forward to this. So what event are you most looking forward to attending when that time comes as a concert. Sporting event beer festival. What is it. What are you missing right now. What are you looking forward to because the weather like. I know it sounds crazy because we're going to get some some snow later this week but like the weather i'm walking out in the mornings and it's not negative twenty so i even started be like. Oh you know. Spring is right around the corner. even though it's february twenty third were getting closer to that point and it's been almost officially a year since things really started to go haywire with nineteen. I was thinking about that just yesterday about where we're at now and the understanding of some of the things that we think are normal now that a year ago we didn't And it really wasn't until for me wi with covid nineteen. It really wasn't until Some of those big sporting events started getting cancelled. So i believe the first one was was like the first. Nba game was like golden state warriors. Game that they shut down. And i was like that's odd and then later that week the entire nba shutdown like later that afternoon. I guess and that was to me. Like what the hell are we facing. And there hasn't really been a gathering of that many people since then i suppose The last one that i saw Because it was after they shut down all these sporting events and you could start to tell where this was going post malone had a concert in denver and that thing was packed. And that's kinda last time. That i remember seeing you know on people's social media that they were at these different events in these different things now are they starting to to get back to smaller amounts of people instead of the absolutely but. I think that it's starting to be missed. Just how much we loved going to these. Travel to Northwestern Colorado
"I like to welcome the show Sam and Nina. Oppenheim Sam you may remember from being on the show way back you can find Samsa Tiger fee at Sam Oppenheim, dot com Sam and Nina welcome to the show. Thank you for having a Song Chris to care and I say Sam has been on the show in a while we figure it's something like ten years of marriage in two kids later that SAM is back. In the early years talking about Bali and northern India and Laos I believe if I am. Correctly, but you're talking something a little more domestic this time. What are we talking about today? So mostly the national parks in northern Colorado I figured because of Covid we did a little domestic travel and there's some amazing sites at their dinosaur, national? Monument. Doesn't get enough attention and Rocky Mountain National Park among a lot of people's favorites excellent and you did this as part of a larger RV trip this year. Correct. So we did our first ever family RV trip and we all four corners, Arizona Utah Colorado? New Mexico but what we covered has been covered by your show before like the route sixty six stuff in New Mexico and Arizona we did that and you recently had a podcast about the national parks in Arizona. Offer beaten past beyond the Grand Canyon so we don't want to repeat anything It's getting tougher. So we do repeat some things these days. In fact, I'm going to try and repeat the show we did allows Laos coming up here sometime I'm just looking for a guest. So let's focus in on Colorado which I think we decided was about a week long portion of your trip yes and you doing this by RV right excellent and where should we start if you're GONNA? Do it just all on its own as a one week one way road trip you could fly into Salt Lake City and fly out of like older Denver area. But I'm not GonNa Really. WanNa talk about Salt Lake City that much. So I think. Can we just start in Dinosaur National Monument border of Utah and Colorado. So we're up in the north western corner of Colorado when we're in dinosaur national monument correct it's most of the monument is now in Colorado but the part with the dinosaur quarry is in Utah and it's one of those parks that stretches across the border and it's Absolutely. Incredible. It's actually two hundred, ten, thousand acres and includes two river canyons both the green and Yamba River canyons and so some people think Oh, it's a national monument. It's not as big as a national park will actually it's a lot bigger than some national park. So the designation National Park is more Congressional and National Monument is Presidential Right? It doesn't determine the funding or the sides are valued visiting the site right? Exactly. So I have spent some time in Dinosaur National Monument but I've done exactly the opposite of the things that you've done. So tell me a little bit about your experience first of all. Yes. So we did is we stayed in an RV campsite outside of the park, but actually we're going to recommend that anyone doing this trip stays inside the park. It's just going to be a better trip I'm talking this cold tour that we're going to be doing here is more of an outdoorsy type of tourism, and so I think if you word of a reserve, the campground at either Split Mountain or Green River on the Utah side of. Dinosaur. National Monument. You would then be inside the park. It's a beautiful campground right on a quiet stretch of the Green River, and all these campgrounds can be reserved on recreation dot Gov, and you could do it with an RV and could do it with a tent. But if you wanted to stay outside there are places you can stay in Jensen Utah which is kind of the border town for the national. Monument, in Utah more in Dinosaur Colorado, they named the town after the monument. Okay and neither of those are all that large town as I am now I think the largest town in the area's vernal Utah, which a little further west than Johnson and actually we should mention that if you're into dinosaurs hopefully you are. If you're going to dinosaur national monument, there is actually a lovely museum in Vernal Utah Not a large museum, but you can see some velociraptor and things like that. So especially, if you're there with kids and I think you were traveling with two. That's that's someplace that I would recommend. We were on prevent a long drive from Bryce Canyon Up to Dinosaur National Monument, and so we drove to rural and it was we made sure to stop at some of those dinosaur statutes that are in town. We weren't unfortunately stay for the museum. I. Don't know if it was open actually right now a lot of museums here in two, thousand, twenty, nine open. It was great to see those the statues in town. If you like photo ops with giant roadside dinosaurs, you won't be disappointed on this road trip.
Black Gun Ownership Rises Amid Pandemic, Protests For Racial Justice
"A record number of Americans have purchased guns this year including Black Americans from K. N. UNC in northern Colorado Lee. Patterson reports that incidents of violence against people of color have pushed some to purchase guns for the very first time and warning to our listeners. There are sounds of gunfire in this story. What type of gun is? So this is a Smith and Wesson nine millimeter shield cat trailer bought her handgun this past spring these as she practices at an indoor range with her husband like it's no big deal. But talking through her mask trailer describes how she felt the first time she pulled the trigger is beyond terrified shaking. Hands were sweaty. Trailer is a democratic political consultant who lives in Colorado. At first, she was nervous cleaning and shooting her new gun. And she had a bad experience, the first range she went to she says people were staring she felt unwelcome. Still regardless of the anxiety I had around. All those things. I got into this because I feel like it was necessarily trailer I started thinking about buying a gun when she saw empty grocery store shelves at the beginning of the pandemic. Then she watched racial justice protests unfold across the country. She started thinking about pushback from people who disagree with those efforts if it looks like communities, of Color and people that support communities of color are rising up against white supremacy that could be a problem for us is. It's probably time probably time for them to buy guns a thought that many other Americans have also had in. August. Alone people bought one point eight million firearms according to industry estimates a trade group called the National Shooting Sports Foundation reports the gun sales to customers have grown more percentage wise than for any other racial or ethnic group. With. Her New gun trailer wants to feel like she has a chance during a home invasion or an encounter with police. What we as the family had to determine is, how do we WANNA die? Instead of look at it that way. DO WE WANNA die not being prepared or at least trying to protect ourselves. That's how you weigh that as part of becoming a new gun owner trailer joined the National African American Gun Association Philip Smith is the founder nationally across the board from all over every state. We have people joining all times a day night. You know I I thought something was wrong with computer. Smith was watching membership numbers rise after the death of George Floyd may but black people have been using guns for hunting and protection for a long time historian say that Harriet Tubman carried firearms so did the Black Panthers in the nineteen sixties these days according to a Gallup poll released last year nineteen percent of black people own guns. Smith says his members are not monolithic. Some women join because they've been sexually assaulted some women join because they wanNA teach you some men join because they want to just get really good at self defense people are joining now for different. Reasons some want to support the National African American Gun Association Financially Smith says for others it's more spiritual I. Think people were looking for a home a place where you can kind of event you can belong where you felt your mind having a relief of some sort Bruce Tomlin a truck driver who lives in New Mexico describes his decision to buy a gun response to stress. I'll just say amounting society He felt that way after watching cellphone video showing the death of Ahmad arbitrary a black man who was shot while jogging through neighborhood in Georgia earlier this year don't. Go around arm the rest of my life. That's because he's been feeling under attack for years after the two thousand, twelve killings of Trayvon Martin, for example, and after the mass shooting at a black church in Charleston in two thousand, fifteen by a white supremacist goes like I can just be mine them all business. And if somebody who's a racist, just decide to roll up on me gun meet down. As is decided that like if I go out I'M GONNA go out shooting back. But now that he's an actual gun owner, it's not so straightforward day to day of feel like I can defend myself better defend my loved ones. But I usually get comfortable having it sometime he does not want to kill or injure anyone open carry makes them nervous I would never take my gone to the grocery store and carry around inside or anything like that. But on the other hand I could be in a situation where needed still out in the car or whatever I just like knowing that I have it gun ownership is complicated for Tomlin especially because he's black if he was stopped by police says, he probably wouldn't tell them that he had a gun. And catch trailer says the same thing giving the example of philander casteel he was shot during a traffic stop for years ago in Minnesota after telling an officer that he had a firearm, his car casteel did have a permit to carry it. Cat Trailer believes that gun cost him his life we're not given a fair shake when these conversations are happening automatically worsen tensions are assumed just because we're black, we're gun owners for both of these new black gun owners. It's an identity that comes with risks, but does make them feel safer for
Courageous Cultures With Karin Hurt & David Dye
"Employees have ideas, leaders want to hear them, and yet somehow there is a disconnect. So what if instead you can have a courageous colchester where people speak up, they share ideas, the default is to contribute. So today, we're going to start with grounding you in a little bit of the research under grounds, our work, and then from, there are going to give a series of very practical tools to help you tap into the very best ideas and micro innovations that are happening on your team right now. So. To answer these questions about why speaking up with problem solutions with micro innovations advocating for customers is difficult. We partnered with the University of Northern, Colorado and a research project both quantitative and qualitative to figure out what keeps people from being able to speak up and what are some of the best companies doing to overcome those barriers. The first reason we discovered through that research is that no one's asking, in fact, forty, nine percent of our research respondents said, they are not consistently asked for ideas by their leaders. And then many people feel like nothing's going to happen. A full fifty percent of respondents said that if they were to share an idea, it wouldn't be taken seriously by their leadership. So, why bother? And then you ever feel stock. Well quite a few respondents feel the same way just over two thirds. Sixty, seven percent said that their leadership operates under the principle because we've always done it this way if we've always done it this way, that's the way we're always going to do it, and then there's the reluctance that comes from fear or a lack of confidence forty percent. Our research respondents said that they lack the confidence to share an idea. So this concept of sue or fear of speaking up was very interesting as we conducted interview after interview across a variety of industries and countries all over the world. Why are people so afraid to speak up and I? We said if you did speak up what are the ideas that you're holding back and these things are not trivial sound like Khumbu, in a break room kind of ideas. They said my idea that I'm not sharing would be to improve the customer experience, the employee experience or improvement of process. People are scared primarily because they have had a bad experience in the past. So research shows that people tend to hold onto a negative experience longer than a positive experience, which means that even if you are a fantastic leader, encouraging people to speak. Supporting them. If they had a bad experience in the past, they may still be holding onto that and are not sharing their best ideas because of old fear. So, an addition to that psychological aspect of overweight in the past people also tend to discount the future in Dr Amy Edmonson Research. She talks a lot about how when it comes to psychological safety. People don't recognize just how valuable the contribution they could make will be. So as a leader, you want to be aware that these things are happening in your team. Another reason people lacked the competence to share is that they haven't been taught how to share their ideas well, and so we will also be giving you a tool today to help you give to your team to help them vet and think through their ideas. So we'll just take you through a little bit. Bit about the courageous cultures process, and then we were going to go a little bit deeper into a couple of these areas. Today. When you're building courageous culture, it really starts with navigating the narrative that is grounding yourself in your own fear or confidence. So are you letting a bad past experience? Hold you back and so one of the things that we do in our programs is really get people to think about their most courageous sacked at work and build on that confidence. The next is creating clarity, and when we talk about creating clarity, we're really talking about in clarity into areas, I being crystal clear that you really do want people's ideas and reinforcing that. Again and second clarity around what a good idea would accomplish, and we'll talk about how you can get more specific than just. Hey, does anybody have any good ideas? Next is cultivating curiosity, and this is where it will spend most of our time today. How do you go out and deliberately stay curious and draw out people's best
Strong winds fuel raging wildfires across California
"Several areas of active weather across the country today first thing in the west the combination of offshore winds and very dry conditions with those fuels that are causing the brush to ignite will lead to dangerous fire weather conditions for California a number of wildfires are currently burning as for that frontal boundary that's pushing eastward and delivering snow to the northern tier states we'll see a more widespread area today extending from southern Montana into Wyoming and down into northern Colorado there's a separate snow system that's moving across the upper Midwest connected with a frontal boundary now on the front side of that warmer air heading into places like Indianapolis and Columbus Ohio today but behind that front look for icing and snow for eastern Iowa portions of the central Wisconsin and northern Illinois at least through
Coloradans React To 'Red Flag' Law
"A gun loving rocker Ted Nugent is entertaining a crowd talking freedom politics and guns you know why you have too many all don't you I haven't been here in years it was weld county sheriff Steve greens who invited Nugent here the event is a fundraiser for the sheriff we're talking about the red flag well that's what we get all this notoriety for in the state Colorado's red flag bill officially called the extreme risk protection order bill is now law set to take effect in January it'll allow family members or law enforcement to get a court order forcing an individual to temporarily give up their guns if they appear to be a significant risk to themselves or others sheriff dreams believe Colorado's law is unconstitutional the long and short of it is this I'm not gonna confiscate someone's guns reams is talking about all of this partially because it's a political issue he's an elected official unlike police chiefs who are generally appointed well obviously it's my role as the police chief to make sure the department enforces the laws that are on the books this is mark Jones the head of the Greeley police department who says he's planning to enforce the law but also understand concerns around it on one hand Jones supports the second amendment on the other hand I also am a police chief in an error where mental health issues are probably at all time highs all across the country not just in Greeley or just in what county I do believe there are people in our society that have no business having guns many states have passed these laws in the aftermath of mass shootings but in practice they're often used in situations involving domestic violence and self harm fire arms are the mostly the way that people die from suicide and also the most common way that people die from suicide Kimberly Pratt works in suicide prevention in northern Colorado means restriction is important she says but taking away means isn't just gonna stop the feelings it's not gonna stop the reason why they want to die for this reason and others some organizations that work with people impacted by gun violence expressed uncertainty about how effective the new law might be one advocacy group mental health Colorado said in a statement that it believes that everyone should have access to the law and that saving lives should not be a partisan
2019 Big Sky Tournament picks, predictions
"Start with the Big Sky conference is a conference you when I actually like to talk about quite a bit over the course of the year here. Some very interesting things in this conference beginning with the fact that we've got a new venue in Boise, Idaho. Yeah. You know, this is the new you. I don't have any numbers on how it how it would do. But I think it's probably an under arena. You know? I mean, if you look at the images of this shoes for hockey, and boxing, doesn't like the best backdrop to me. I would venture to guess at the under will do pretty well here. I'm pretty sure the under will be steamed in these Big Sky game. So if you do like, the underneath games, I was just you play the earlier rather than later wanna get we talked about this with Tony George on Thursdays show. You know, he talked about how sometimes having a by really isn't an advantage for a team the six through eleven seeds play here in the first round on Wednesday. In fact, the first game of this tournament nine thirty AM Pacific time between northern Arizona and Sacramento state. But those six eleven teams get a chance to play again, she has to go out on play at this arena. I believe Idaho state. I think played at Boise state during the regular season. That was the only team that played in this. Venue? So we look at the rest of this conference tournament here. We've break down some of the odds in the Big Sky. You know, it's it's I don't wanna say it's completely wide open. But at the same time, you do have a favorite here Montana plus one sixty northern Colorado 235 Weaver state, five fifty eastern Washington nine hundred and then on down from there. Yeah. And I see the lines of changing right as we speak here on this Big Sky conference to talk about we've talked about it here quite a bit. Like, you said cap can arg would I think this is an interesting conference, and there's money to be made in games like this as far as standpoint here the way, I would break this down as Montana's the best team here if they're healthy. And I I don't think it's very close if Montana's healthy, but ako going to play tomorrow believe that's like pronounce it wrong. I apologize there. But the big man, they need him, you know, much higher upside with him. I think that Montana his vulnerable without him. You know, they've shown that here down the stretch. The thing is I think we are we states very dangerous team. They're they're far more talented than their record would suggest but a tough path for them. Because if you look at Weeber states drawl here, I mean, we were state plays Portland state in the first game Portland's been playing some really good basketball, Portland states another team. I would consider. Asleep or here in this conference?
