"Passion for grassroots racing. There's a lot of talk in the nascar world about thin us in places that people romanticize where they want to go back to lately iowa has been chatted about a lot. of course. we're talking about the richmond's fairgrounds raceway that hosted one of the s rx races back there in the summer and sold it out. It was a tremendous showing and over. It feels like the last decade. There has been a great movement of people that want to somehow see north wilkes burke back into the pitch that seemed like a lost cause for the longest time but now my boss mark smith has been kicking around the idea. That may be north wilkes. Borough in some way can be resurrected. Jeff hammond i know you were up there this past weekend. Tell us what was going on. Well you already tests on the points. There's been a lot of talk but this past weekend Was the first time. I have been to the speedway in forever and you run. Run up down the road. Going past the speedway going to boone every now and then and things have grown up so bad folks on alpha four twenty one. You can no longer see the speedway at one time. He just kind of jumped out at you. There's no way to miss it. Because he's sitting right on the edge of four twenty one That's the way. It was the other morning when i grow up. I called. terry. Parsons you know wife of benny parsons and she's very involved. Nia sensitivity. which why don't you come into back gateway or front. She said come up front. 'cause i want to hear what you think when you go by the racetrack. I'm talking about folks trees. You know six eight ten inches around kudzu everything briars. I mean all kinds of stuff had grown up on top of this race track as well as a lot of the buildings that were there for the vip sweets or anything like that. They totally collapsed. When i got there everything was getting cleaned up and this massive throng of of yellow and red suits. That were volunteers to my firefighters. From all over the county and that's combat from wilkes county came in and put together a concerted effort to where they clean this mess up and folks they had piles of brush and debris four or five As tall as as a two or three story building so and a matter of about six hours they transform wilkspur from basically a grown over kudzu place to doug. I mean it looked so much like the real deal back in the day. It made you get goosebumps and excited about what the potentially leather still a chance. That the state of north carolina's could support north wilkspur speedway the now defunct rockingham raceway and charlotte motor. Speedway would benefit. There's a big bill that's got some money attached to it. That's going to have a lot of sway. Alexis and brad out last both of you. This start off with alexis. Why the romance here. I mean we hear about this brad. Host countless shows on sirius. Don't go by somebody doesn't mention north wilkspur. I went there a lot as a spectator reporter. Wasn't that great then. But people sure love. It seems like you know. I think When you talk about something that has a long storied tradition in any sport You know or any facet of life for that matter. Once you've been removed from it for a long time there does become a romance. That builds for You know what you perceive that it was when it was at its height and obviously not run a lot of races. There had had some great finishes there. And i think that you know it. It's all about tradition inherited. Think that's those are words that are brought up a lot in our sport We're moving forward in a lot of ways. And i think that that's and i think that you know creating new venues and going to race tracks and all of these things are are helping our sport but when we can put in that little Drop of tradition like we do when we go to darlington for the throwback race and and all of those small things. I think that that that has a romance to it. That is very very attractive to to our fan base. I- lights going to north wilkspur. Because it was one of the places that i could go that i legitimately thought late in his career that richard petty had a shot to win it and he won a lot at north wilkspur. Also remember watching. Ricky rudd actually dumped dale earnhardt. There one time. Not a lot of people did that. Ricky rudd wasn't afraid to folks. Brad kelly what do you think happens here insist. Is this going to come to life. It sounds like it. I mean in some way shape or form. The big question is how does it come to Is it something that hosts points paying races on the schedule is it's something that host a specialty event like an all star race. Is it a venue that becomes you know like weekly racing dealer. We see concerts and festivals in a lot of other things. But i think there's a lot of effort going into it. And i don't think that effort is going to be offered. Not so i do think. North wilkspur is going to be part of some conversation How indepth that conversation is and how far that conversation goes that remains to be seen but obviously a lot of people are looking forward to just when it does happen for all the people who want it back when it comes back. Go be better by the tickets. That's that's what they're that's what they're saying. If you live in this part of the world you need to go up to north wilkes-barre anyway because it's a cool area. It's very very nice. Tucked away in the north carolina mountains. There are billboards as you go into wilkes county. And they all have the old logo for the north wilkes barre speedway and it says save. The speedway seems like over the last couple years it has really picked up. Some momentum of was interesting to hear that one hundred fifty firefighters showed up to clear the brush and clean the place up. And we'll see what the next phase is is that comes about so when we come back we will Do a little thing. We like to call green flag and black flag here on fast. Talk if your loved. One has passed away due to kovic.

"Probably a dictionary size stack of papers. We could come up with all the first or unique things. You've been a part of. And i just touched on some of them and another one is you're the guy that guided brett bodine to his only cup win. And that would have been at expo. Borough so let me toss it to you. What stands out what sparks. Maybe as a story or something from that day. We don't have enough time to talk about that they trust the But yeah that was a a watershed day because it was First cup we in and as we know today is only but what made it special to me. Kelly was it was our first win on an oval track. We won walking's a road. Course with ricky rudd felt like we should win it. We once anoma nineteen eighty nine. Another road course. Ricky rudd felt like we should win it but wilkes barre was one of those unexpected winds. But when i do remember about the weekend is in happy hour on saturday which are happy. Hour filed practice back then was always late in the afternoon on saturday after whatever else ray and i think maybe the modified cars ran our late model racing. The trucks did exist. The end inexpensive the of extended he ever went to north wiltshire. Borough but i remember brett going on racetrack in start net practice in we just ran lap after lap after lap. I think we may be made a thirty or forty lap. Run in the times. Just didn't fall off and i stood down there in terms one into we're the garage. Air was kinda located in that thing. Turn so good. It just had good drive off the corner. Normally that was the two challenges north wilkes for getting the thing to turn and then trying to get the rear wheel so about the corn. Sometimes you'd spend the rear tyres halfway down the straightaway. But that they would almost turn before we even get to the center of the core and just go straight off the core and i was giving him his laptops and he came in and i let the window down and he was grinning from ear to ear..

"That leads us into more conversations about wins with quaker state when ricky rudd drove for the team brett bill. Dine at north wilkes borough just so much i mean larry was incredible because i just tossed out a question and he brought up so many details about those races. So it's just a great review going into atlanta and we're both really excited that this weekend is a four hundred mile rates. You're going to hear him talk about that as well. So bonus episode this week. I appreciate quaker state being on board for the last three episodes. And i appreciate them connecting me with larry to do this because larry is always incredible to talk to. He's been on the podcasts. Before i've said that now a few times with guests you can go back in the archives and find that but do it after you hear conversation because here we go. We're going to preview atlanta and go down memory lane with. Larry mcreynolds here on the racing. Writers podcasts will.

"And he was on these rhythms and he made several other during the caution. And from the way. That i read gary mccreevy's column was able to stay on the lead lap at that point and to top everything off. They had changed engines in daryl's car the morning of the race and despite all that he was able to finish fifth four laps down to harry. Dwi said it was just a routine day. No problems at all. Which is the motor lou tires and spun out once chew. It was just a normal day. But since i had such bad luck. I'm glad harry won the race. And there is a photo of. Bobby allison's plane in flight in the photo spread and the caption says that bobby did a barrel roll over the race track on saturday before during or after the modified race. Now if i'm rod with bobby and he does a barrel roll. I ain't flying with bobby g. And i can tell you that i would never get on a plane with bobby allison because we show boating. I'll tell you what He was known to do bad at least two or three times a year. When you had the opportunity one various tricks was the buzzer speedway. Just come down as low as you possibly could and buzz that track the sound of his plane coming overhead at such a low altitude jerks rock blows and look forward to doing that. We'll speak in bobby allison. He had ruffled some feathers. The wait before north wilkes borough where he had finished eighth two laps. Down to darrell waltrip. Morgan shepherd finished one spot. Better than bobby three laps down but they got together a couple of times and buddy parrott. It was morgan's crew chief. Hey headed down pit road. And he confronted gary nelson. Who is bobby's crew chief. And they had to be separated by nascar officials. Now who do you have in that tussle. Do you have your money on buddy or do you have your money on gear. Are you kidding buddy in a first round knockout bar. I reckon maybe we touched a little bit out there but then one time he just turns left on me. He drove like an idiot. It seemed like he was trying to hold me up all day when i finally did get by. He just kept on turning left. I don't know what's going wrong with that boy. I don't know what's going on with that boy but the anterior labonte was running second with three laps to go when he gets together with. Bobby they both spin out and the yellow flag comes out and the rice ends under caution. The rod sada. Terry's car is a heck and the right front tire is blown. And he stays on the track limping around on the ram and he is passed by dale earnhardt. And benny parsons because they feel that he's not up to speed. He's initially scored in fourth place but he protests and after a check of the timing on the scorecards. It's determined that he was up to an acceptable speed. And he's put back into second place but terry is still not happy with bobby. Allison he said in the sidebar waltrip went by alison without any problems. Just before i came up on him i got alongside him down the backstretch and then i was under him as we went through the third. Turn when we got there he just turned into me is not the first time he's done something like that to me. It has happened at richmond. And martinsville. And i'm getting fed up with it. Who does he think he is. God allison is just alison. He thinks he can do anything. Bobby talked about all the controversy during a luncheon at charlotte motor speedway the week between north wilkspur martinsville. And when he was told about terry's who does he think he is. God comment. bobby said really. That's the case. They ought to get underneath and start. Genuflecting we're not worthy. I heard him say that. And then later on at another race a crewman from another team up with that story and he says to me. What does he knew that. What the new fanatic me. What does that mean. I said at means neo the nickname. You bobby you got a new york guy. Adad stopped off all about the incident with morgan. Bobby said i told morgan's mechanic made buddy parrott that. When morgan and i had our encounter his car had already been severely damaged. While mine didn't have a scratch on it. He could write this down. I would never hit a guy. I and he could never six times. I don't mind a little bumping but when a guy runs into me and mashes the gas turning me sideways. That is something different. Bobby next turned his attention to the incident with terry. They said i could have given him more room. And maybe i should have. But when terry labonte is running in second place bit. He shouldn't run into anybody in a fit of temper. I know he's being coached. The radio by crew chief jake elder but he out not to let that affect him. I think he's an excellent young man with a lot of opportunity but that does not give him the right to treat people the way he treats them on. He's behind. I think quote from mobbing are indicative of the kind of driver he was now. I was not the aggressive over the top type of driver. It was very strategic very spot. Though i think they really is some truth in the words he saying you notice that he did not really put down either driver back insults the game or anything else a sorta complimented both them and explain what they had done wrong or what they had greeted no situations that we very even tempered about the whole thing or it. Listen my an. I thank you so much for your time. I know that. I love giving you a hard time. I know for a fact you love giving me a hard time. Listen i truly do appreciate your friendship and relationship over the years. You're one of the gas. And i appreciate it here on the show. "Glenn style method Glenn being old English for medicine so when you think about agent meads they were considered medicine medicine they were taking herbs and spices fermenting with honey also read that Jane austen made the so. There's this historical aspect. That's really nice and floral medicinal method. Glenn is another area of extreme interest for me but back to the size irs so incisors it's made of North Carolina fresh pressed Apple CIDER. Originally we got from Hendersonville North Carolina but the and we were working with was transitioning to celdor Jews to a natural juice maker so they didn't have any extra side or available for us so I called our friends at Bob. Oh City cider works who let me know that one of their local sources is Perry low or Jersey in North Wilkes borough so they are fantastic and I go and get my two of three hundred gallons of their fresh pressed apple cider different every year different bland for west growing. I tend to like the late season because they're a little bit speeder. Some of the pink ladies there often beautiful varietal that they grow but anyway different apples will be in that cider so that spider comes back to the military and pump it into a tank and that's that's the base for for the meat. I had honey to that and yeast so most of the building blocks of time of need our honey water and yeast but in this case of siser. There's no water. It's just the apple cider so you have this really strong apple back. In those needs we make our apple siser which is a dry Chris Apple cider. I consider that my lawnmower mead because it's so thirst quenching on a hot day like super chill that down for the summer and then we also make a slightly sweeter version of it are spiced apple cider more like apple pie very popular mead styled Alameda East do because it's delicious so I guess a technical question that on the size or so like with standard means you're you're adding water to the Hunting Takata salute it to the right sugar level that you want to make sure that it ferments to the right alcohol so when you're adding in just citre then do you find yourself adding less honey or do you find yourself the ratio being different great question and yes I do. There's when I have the CIDER literally brings in almost half of my fermentable sugar while it's a measure that cider and then see but it's about a hundred and ten dominate says slightly more honey than the CIDER are traditionalist it might have about a three pound of honey per gallon of me ratio with the size of my tile back to a couple of towns funny but what you get from that is we have a lot of fermentable in there a lot of poundage our premiums have a couple of pounds of fruit and a couple pounds of honey in every gallon uh of need so talk a little bit more about those local ingredients should process for our sourcing those ingredients and and that's fantastic we are at the Durham farmers market. We joined the farmers market in two thousand fifteen in our second year of operations because because we work with local flowers and herbs so it seemed like a really great fit for us and at that time I had a few relationships with farmers immerse and through my experience at the farmer's market had met several more I source some of our ingredients directly from the market are ginger comes from the markets cricket and this gives Rosales are coming from their the lemon time and I just got some carrots from a local farmer as well to work a test batch something coming up on very interested in savory avery side as well something to play with that I haven't played with before but our normal process for say strawberries are current strawberry farmer when we were at the Holly Springs Farmers Market one-season they were my neighbor vendor and I knew upon setting up once they got out there strawberries of smells delicious. What kind of strawberries do you grow and he grew the style called Chandler's here in North Carolina that are so automatic and they're very delicate and sweet they just melt in a mead and so through that meeting they now supply S. with our local strawberries. We bring in a couple of hundred pounds of strawberries at a time. We process them by hand here. Rinse them just like you would at known cut off the green top says we don't want that then we freeze them up on. Trae then we put that tray of frozen strawberries into a container and that's how we can build up our couple few hundred pounds of berries the batch of meat we'll keep those in the freezer just help intensify the sugar's a little bit and the strawberry great flavor plus. I want to release it. You know at the next strawberry season so each year. We're gathering the strawberries at the same time we're releasing the batch made from the prior year her kind of been that way we have been to just just like the wine role does kind of how I think about the needs to talk about capturing the field and you're capturing that different vary variables of sunlight how much rain all of that affects the needs so. I really love working with fruit from the local. Farmers definitely means a commitment of time and energy and space. It's a labor of love I'd have to say especially when I'm taking and several hundred pounds of things off site to roast them to bring them back to make the need we've just lovingly caressed all of that flew through its journey ready to become a me and it's all part of that drinking the field taking that experience of local fruit or flowers and and capturing capturing it in a bottle very cool so you had mentioned vintages and I know that's a great concept to make sure that you're really understanding the growing season of that year and really capturing after everything that happened. How would you say does meat age over time. Select your maybe making me ten years ago showed up a bottle today absolutely and and I have done that and they are delightful mead ages really beautifully and I quit that to all of those nectar sources that have have been fermented and are in their need can mellow and deepen. It's it's weird to say that sounds sounds like one is fading and one is deepening but that is what happens the flavors mellow and they also intensify so all those different floral oral. B. B. visits change over time with aging the traditional needs to me. Just beautifully age for years and years are our fruit needs. Also we have done some verticals since we now have almost five years of existence but we've tasted are twenty fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen eighteen meats and they're different throughout the years some of that is just are growing her to in learning curve on the meads. I feel were there just getting better better but there's also the differences from year to year in the field the field differences so let's talk cocktails cocktails doing a lot of creative things. Other folks talk a little bit about that. How did it get started. Would you like to see it. Go sure absolutely need such a versatile beverage that just WANNA start playing around with it. When you think about edit space ingredients think this is part of the reason. It's so fun with cocktail. Since it's made from honey and free what would you do to make a cocktail often include a simple simple syrup and freely aspects so me just is a natural playing brown for cocktails. We got into it by meeting. Someone one at the farmer's market meeting actually meeting someone came into our tastes you and they started talking with their friend about I would make this with that. I would do this with that. Oh this would be fantastic gin. This would be so good with vodka and they just started riffing on them and we started talking to them and and developed a relationship where we invited them back said did you ever come play with us mix cocktails for us so they were a couple of cocktail aficionados autos came to play with us at the meeting and the we contacted a local bar to have an event where we could present as we. I don't have a liquor license here. We're winery so we we joined up with the local bar had an event there where we took these five recipes developed with the cocktail tale Aficionados and a little contest there and people came out to the bar voted on those and are winning need ended up being featured in a a book on the call the art of me tasting and caring fight Chrissy Ninian's airpor- fantastic book most meter. He's he's have it. You can come in reference it here at the meeting or via copy to take home and it's got that cocktail recipe as also. It's on our website but that's how it got started noted. We had that event at the local bar. People really loved it. A winning cocktails called all you need is love of the name and handed made with my all time favorite this time me so and it's pink so happy about he outcome of that experiment from there. It's been along with food and meat pairing kind of a growing hobby of mine. As I mentioned engine I love to cook hours have putting flavors together so intellectually weekend make pairings just by thinking about the four ingredients whether whether that's going for a cocktail whether it's going to be some sort of food pairing thinking about the ingredients that are there also since alley came on board as map rations nations manager. She's very good. She's a very skilled cook and she's very good at making terrorists piece so now I credit her with taking the evolution is not this forward. She's developed a ton of recipes that are on our website for different cocktails. She test batches them at home and she's also really good at tutoring. We had a lot of fun with that. Even get to kitchen cooks together flavors to cook and you're going to get some great results so I'm going to encourage people to play around not only cocktails with me but also with meat and preparing really fun event for someone to do at home you could start started simple as a meat and cheese pairing to says you might design a wine and cheese. Pairing meat is going to play in that round really well. I think as you mentioned maybe appearing for US earlier today putting Humboldt Faw cheese with our lavender grass absolutely I could totally see see that we are in our tasting notes food pairing suggestions. Were always looking to play with that. Whether it's a like with like pairing or whether it's a nice opposites contrasting pairing is awesome so I mean somebody places. We can go with this so let's stay on the food pairing for another couple of moments here. What's what's your favorite meat and food pairing.

"Hey. Time. Even Chris lane to come back on talent Tuesday. And he said it was it hasn't worked out. Yeah. Bigness. I see your little Kosal saw that on our stay here studio. It's fun though. You know, to know people who, like when, when he is in town, and I know it's like you, we were just talking about this, like, you know, people's lives, even though you, you haven't talked to them, and they probably wouldn't know you, if you stumbled upon them, but, you know their whole life. Yes, I saw the very first time that Chris lame brought his girlfriend, Lauren home, because all of his Kernersville friends. I'm friends with them to in real life, and all of his Kernersville friends were posting about Christly and bringing his girlfriend home for the first time. So I was like I'm following their relationship, right? Absolutely. They don't know me and I don't know them. So anyway, the good thing is, is nice to see a good person. Make it like a nice person. His wife under images. God. I just wanna see partly said peep, local, people are listening know him. We want him to visit the his family's gonna know that you have bikini pictures of her on your phone. Keeney yet. Chris fiance. Up to date. Good looking couple. It's unfair very unfair. It is. All right. Another Hollywood news. Zach galifianakis one time stole Justin bieber's, underwear he would was wearing Justin bieber's underwear seems like something the world to see right? Well, it's true that it did happen. But there is no photographic evidence. Makes me sad. It all happened back in two thousand thirteen. Gosh, it seems so long ago local person he's from, Wilkes borough, lent to the school, the arts, right? Golfing, Arcus on Wilkes borough north, Wilkes borough, and then went to NC state in the night will school, the arts and NC state, Justin Bieber was on Zack's interview show called between two firms, remember that show funny at the end of the episode Zack got slime de needed some new clothes, so he went into Justin bieber's trailer got the slime off of him. And he didn't have any underwear, but he did see a pair of underwear in the corner. I don't know if it had been worth. Nakas said I needed a pair of underwear. I put a pair of underwear on it started thinking about it. He was like that's all that's all weird levels of wrong. Yes. That is wearing just to be resolved where it was like. Well, I can't return them. That's. Underwear do that years later. Zach galifianakis tried to give Justin Bieber underwear back this, same underwear and be like thanks. I'm good. No. Thank you. And then finally robbing Hollywood news Simon cowl is still Simon cowl still rude rude. Simon Cal was transparent. He is he you know what you're getting. But Simon cowl did stop a twelve year old girl in the middle of her performance because he was not feeling it wasn't as mean as you might think. Okay..

"Quality audio file we'll share some of your stories tomorrow on one A. Back now to our conversation with David Brooks about his latest book, the second mountain, let me get to a few of your stories and comments now Christopher rights. Our son was killed in an accident, eighteen months ago instantly, my work as a litigator and a partner in a national law firm became meaningless, I resigned from partnership to take on a role in teaching and wellness, my wife, and I now focus on our older son who has been claiming his second mountain before his first, Judith writes. I think David is very articulate but coming from a unique perspective moms who are working twelve hours a day to make ends meet for the children. They love and are raising themself Leslie are trying to have their own second mountain moment during first mountain realities that do not end, David. That's fair. Do find a, you know, this is some people think is this just a male problem. This sense of isolation. At the sense of isolation is is not only a male problem. It's a female problem too. We're all sort of caught in the individuals to culture, motherhood points toward joy. And that's one of the things. I try to make a distinction in this book between those who are aiming toward happiness, which is about soups, personal self enlargement. You get a promotion you get a victory. Your team wins the SuperBowl. That's good. But joy is better. Enjoy is seeing the getting seeing the light and others is when you transcend the self Charles just mentioned meeting the person in the grocery store, and that's joy. That's when you're forgetting about yourself when mothers appearing to their eyes of their babies. They experienced joy one of my favorite quotations from Dorothy day. She wrote an account of giving birth to a child and at the end of the account. She rates I'm gonna paraphrase if I had composed the greatest novel written the greatest symphony or sculpted, the greatest sculpture cannot affect the more exalted creator than I did when they placed my child in my arms, no person could receive such fast flood of love and joys. I felt at that moment and with that came in to work. Ship into a door. And that's the joy parents feel when they're not thinking about themselves they've disappeared. They see the glow in in their kids. Is you talk in your book about the way that this journey has affected your view on many of the beliefs and worldviews that you've written extensively about about. You know, conservatism about the Republican party about meritocracy about capitalism. And I can just hear my progressive friends in the back of my head saying, well, duh, we've been trying to tell conservatives like you for thirty years that this kind of meritocratic capitalistic Reaganesque economic view of the world is wrong, and it will suck your soul. And you finally figure this out the hard way, welcome to humanity. Glad she finally caught up. Yeah. What would you say? I would say I this is deeper than politics. This is the level of trusting relationships, and there's a left wing version of community communitarianism where you have community. There's also conservative version which goes back to when shirt, Edmond Burke, which goes back to Catholic social teaching. And so I would say it's not simply moving from right to left. It's moving down into level of relationship. And this has changed me in some ways that are conservative really see the distress in the family every every week I run into kids who who their their dad's left them in their life has been decimated by that. And so the family a little more on the other hand, I decided I some ways of swung too. Left. I always opposed reparations until I took this journey and seeing the just seeing that where to racial makeup break moment in the society and seeing how the sin of of slavery and racism has ripples out to this day seeing the rage, it's racial injustice as sort of radicalized man that subject so few months ago. I wrote a column about about supporting reparations some ways it's moving me left in some ways. It's moving right mostly. It's just made me softer. And I I didn't want to put myself in this book, but it's a book about relationship relationship starts with Wilner ability. And if you're not vulnerable, you're not really sincere about it. And my political opponents have used to hurt me. And then this has been a bad month that they've hurt me. But you still gotta lead with owner. Melanie, do you still describe yourself as conservative as a Republican? Now, I never did as a Republican. I did as a conservative, Edmund Burke. But now, I'm a moderate, I believe that most political arguments are are are competitions between. Partial truths that in most arguments each side has piece of the truth and life is about finding balance. So I guess it's most accurate Osama moderate, you know, softening yourself can be hard when you're a newspaper columnist now supposed to have sharp elbows in hard views. Yeah. And if you read the comments section people go after you, and we live in a tough time, but you can either, you know, turn hard and tribal or you can turn soft and open. I'll try to do the ladder. Well, let's talk to one more of the folks who's been involved in this program and who's doing this kind of work. Joining us now is Laura Beth prevent she's the community engagement director for forward Wilkes. She also goes by LB, the group gives young people in Wilkes Barre North Carolina a place together, especially those in the LGBT community. LB welcome to the program. Thank you for having me. Tell me a bit about Wilkes borough described. The town the people what's it like? Yeah. Wooksbury is a town of about thirty five hundred residents here in the hills of the Blue Ridge mountains. So we're painting Asli balancing beautiful landscape in the country and an area. That's also full of -ympia warehouses and manufacturing jobs that have left out, but we're trying to find their path forward that attaining economy, you're from Wilkes boroughs at right? Yes, sir. I was more race here in Wilkes county at some time out west and undergrad. And then I came back home at twenty two told me about your experience growing up there. I I'm guessing that you're experienced growing up in Wilkes borough had a lot to do with your decision to do four wheels. I will say I growing up and books. I grew up in part of a favourable form community. My family was that too proud to paint proud to whitewash Puerta paint demographic. And I spent my whole life working on and hearing from my father what they will call my starts. Now, you need to go to school. We need to get your education. I don't want you and your brother working like this and being in the farm and growing up in wolf county as a gay person was Russ in general. I don't think that's gotten better for kids here in Appalachia, and I really left my community after an attack when I was seventeen and for my sexuality and was done and ready to leave. And I did and as life would have it knife father one that passing away when I was nineteen and I came back home to work on the farm and did it until I could get back out west and get a star way wilkspur. Notes county as I could. And when I came back home. I I had went away. I had saw the world, but I still had to emptiness that gnawed inside of me. And I started looking around and kind of had dissipation because if you're thinking about memory, it's easier to remember something if you're physically in the place where you learned it, and I had forgotten what it was like to care about my neighbor and be part of a community, and I found myself physically back, and I remembered it I remember my father who while he said, they're telling me he didn't want me to work as hard as he did. He would go help every neighbor every chance and take care of them. And I realized that it needed to stop doing what my father had told me to do and start doing what he had done his whole life and try to follow that model. Let me back up to that. First mountain phase of your life going out and being successful in working as hard as you could. I don't know if this was your experience, but I'm gay and one of the things. That I've noticed about me and other LGBT people is that when we climb our first mountain we climbed like our hair is on fire. It's like we climb harder. Because something about the experience of being LGBT almost can make you make you put more pressure on you to be successful almost like compensating for what the world might think about your say about your how the world might might denigrate. You did did you experience that too? Oh, I don't. I don't think it's a reality. But I think that idea that is gay person. Either in the closet or success is absolutely field. I was I will say I guess lucky took some weird curves with me. And I was pretty young. When I realized I was in my valley Anka change, my climb, and I will say when you start climbing. It's something you do on the second down individually, I was very lucky to find Megan Barnett, she had this vision in plan as the founder four will. And when we partnered together, she's our workforce, and she focuses on how we can get more people that table, and I can focus on how do we get the community there? And when you have a balance like that, I think he's really make change described to me some of the things that forward Wilkes does what are some of the services you provide? And right now, we're still very new been an interesting life when she started being authentic how fast things fall into place, but we create a teams only green night that caters to our underserved minority giving them a free event once a month here in town. We also have an T he'd hang out, which we're very blessed to be able to do in partnership with a faith based organization here in the community to give Crear kids area place to come talk to adults who've been through it or here. Living on the other side. We do class on the grass, which is a using public space. We already had offer donations base community classes. So he's done yoga, Tai Chi, and you're trying to give people a place to be in fellowship again because we don't have this social organizations thriving like we did in the seventies era of prosperity as a country. I think it's up on us to get that idea the social group back going so that people can get in conversation with each other. Again, I'm Joshua Johnson. You're listening to one A. David Brooks, both LB and Charles and their second mountains have been defined by giving back to a specific community either where they were born or or near where they were born some place that they had tied to is there something about that sense of place about this idea of home that is resonant in terms of the second mountain face. A lot of people are very geographically located one of the questions I asked when I go around the country is what level of society. Are you most attached as it your block your neighborhood? Your town, your state your country or the world and most people I meet it's their town. They really care about the town. And I met a guy in Youngstown Ohio started his activism by standing of town square with assigned said defend Youngstown, and what's interesting about Luke's in north Wilkes Peiro is this was a town where Lowe's hardware was headquartered. A lotta great tradition as makers of things, and then a lot of those places left and set, but the pride was still there in the instinct was still there. And that story that town story that we can bounce back. From this has really been motivating. It'll be correct me. But it's really seemed like it's been a resource that we have a common story were we've been down the valley, but we could come back, and then a common project community is a group of people who build something together and in in Wilkes a lot of people are building places 'cause they're for young people, especially there were very few places to gather to now somebody's building health club. Somebody's got a coffee shop places where people can go and build relationships, and it'll be part of that. And I just wanna make sure for those of you who may have kind of half heard the introduction. We're talking about Wilkes borough North Carolina, not Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. That's another part of the Justin case you halfway heard me at the beginning L P. What about the second mountain notion for you is this something is working with Ford will something that taught you about joy about that connectedness between people? I think it's something that I had always found a way to connect with people. I think being able to share kind of your shame and being vulnerable with people and connected informed, Oceania positive channel for that energy. And you just find us joy great. Joining your survey something bigger than yourself or you're no longer a disposable individual person. My life belongs to our community. I mean every day I thin exhausted..

Now, he's got a couple of big games left. I think trying to remember LA shoe remains Auburn remains. I think a road game at South Carolina. So I mean there are opportunities. But I I see no evidence right now that this season is salvageable. Do you? Well, I keep hoping today is, but I really don't see that as as a realistic possibility who do you think might do a better job in the future. Well, Scott, I I'm not really sure I'm qualified to to offer a suggestion while while Obama has a sitting coach I like Avery. He's a he's a very personable coach. But in in being objective about what he's done this year, pretty bad. He hasn't won NCWA prince last year. And I think a lot of eyes are on him in terms of how he finishes this season. Let's let's say that how about Johnny Tennessee, Johnny go right ahead. Hi, paul. I think last week or whenever it was the John was talking about going to Daytona. Yeah. John went to five hundred. But here was mound extending that was his first NASCAR race. I've been to Charlotte a bunch of times I've seen a bunch of stunts and some great races. I saw the stunt there that don't be telling stumps gone wrong now, and I sell stop for a movie there. And I was just curious if John has ever been to a race at Nash, I mean, Charlotte because they're they're really great racist and your these right there, John, and I went to the Coca Cola six hundred a couple years ago. A good time date is great rights thing. I mean stunts and things like that. Why? Oh, yeah. Yeah. There's a fly over before the race. There was a it was an epic flyover before the five hundred on Sunday. Yeah. We had one. When I was there. It was a b one bomber come over. Right. When not doing the the national anthem, and you kind of really didn't those come in that low and everything, and it was really great. I just wanted to see if you've been there. I've seen some great races there in the world of great stuff there. Well, Johnny I I used to cover NASCAR. And then in the pantheon of famous tracks. I mean, you have the Daytona Charlotte, but Rockingham one of the old old guard. Those are those are among the the Bristol. Those those are the mainstays of yesteryear. I heard you say that you covered racist. I figured you'd been there about John had been there. Not with y'all live in. We just John's leaving the show after this weekend. I don't think we saw John till Wednesday. It took them that long recover from Daytona. Into charlotte. Where else have you been on the circuit Johnny anywhere else? I went to north Wilkes book for they show Cam. But I had to start a father in law lived in Charlotte. You know, every race who calls they got you tickets. So I'll tell you. What thing when I first started in the business. I used to cover the I lived in Birmingham, and the they sent me out to Birmingham international raceway..

So in my opinion NASCAR has no choice, but to do something because you're not gonna just say, well, we're not going to Chicago anymore. You know, that would be no more fair to them to do that. And it was we're not going to know Wilkes for all the people that get mad because we don't go to north Wilkes. Murrow. I get it. I get it was probably a mistake. But that mistake happened. Are you going to repeat it? So you have to fix the mile and a half program you have to fix it. So what's? Wrong with it. The only thing is wrong with the mount a half his damn sure not facility a great. Great grand stand's. Great concession stands. Great parking more. People can go all that's good. There's nothing. There's nothing bad about that. They've invested in lights even vested. I mean, the facilities are also it's the modern they're nice. They're the series a good. It's the racing. So if you can fix the racing does that fix the problem? Yes. It fixes the problem. Now, how do you do that? You know what I mean? That's that's where it gets really really difficult. So we have a series that most people seem to like, you know, most people like to truck series. No one ever complains that much slower all in a Cup car. I don't hear that complaint. I don't hear people say truck series. No good because they don't go fast. I've never heard anybody that. I don't think people realize how much slower truck isn't a Cup car. I don't think they realize that. Well, let me tell you something. It's a lot. Back when we used to go to Kentucky to test. I was there. Michael Walter Brayson. I was tested for them during the winter. And there was Trump those like fifteen cars testing those two days I came off turn to off pit road. And there was a truck going into turn one and one and a half laps. I called him a Cup car is way faster than a truck and no one ever complains. So the speed of the race car to a degree isn't the issue here. The issue is a quality racing. If you can give collar arson Marsha ex all the.

And apparently now they began to move a little bit and they will be going onto the racetrack three laps the indication. That's correct Gobi giving them three laps to the cars. Get them shelves set to go again. It's not cold telling it's right around seventy degrees. But nevertheless, three laps will be taken.
