"Five fifty Tom Lippi and Meghan gold speier editing this afternoon time now to check back with KCBS and chronicle insider, Phil matere joining us per usual live on the KCBS ring central Newsline. Bart's board of directors has approved a new contract for the agencies police. Officers giving them a sixteen percent raise over the next four years. Phil we have talked an awful lot during this time about the crime problems on Bart BART's said for years, it's chronically understaffed is this pay package going to be in office is going to do it to to get more people to come to work for Bart police. Well, it's it might help do it, Patty. But there's a big gap there. So look first of all let's take a look at the contract, basically when you take the wages benefits in the retirement contributions and erupted altogether barred from being in the bottom third of bay area law enforcement agencies to the top. Okay. So that's a step up. So it's a more attractive place to work now. But it's still tough to hire cops where everyone hundred applicants you might get one passes all the background checks that makes it through the academy that makes it through the training process and actually winds up patrolling station. But in the meantime, you know, Bart is still under staffed they have managed to hire. Twenty four new cops this year. But they're still twenty one day can see because people are retiring, and they still if they're going to make the goals of this study that they took a look at they need ninety four more cops over the next five years and getting that number is going to be tough because people are gonna continue to retire. This is a consistent moon for BART's police chief Carlos Rojo's, he has made staffing up his top priority. Well, with good reason, we've had problems ongoing problems with Bart problems, both petty and serious crimes petty being a person sprawled out next to you on a seat when you're heading home and being a neighboring or just, you know, it's like this or or running around panhandling, although that's not necessarily against the raw on Bart. But just the question of safety and serious things. Like, this lashings, we have a nice lashes. We had last year, but, you know, Jeff, another problem here is just staffing gentle even with these new hires. Are they still is an average of one copper ever to stations? We actually get out on patrol. They've got about one hundred and fifty five pounds to patrol the system three hundred sixty five days a year. You put it in a vacation and stuff and that equation still seeing the same. You don't have a crop at every station. You don't have a crop on every train? And so whether it's real a perceived, the public says L, not seeing the cops say, and so, you know, you've got problems with writers as well. So this is probably the try to make it better. But it's not the full answer by any means is is the full answer even more money. I mean, what is that? Okay. If you got more money. Raising benefits you make it competitive, then you're going to need more money for higher more pops. And then you're going to have to act and extend the contract out to try to make the hiring faster, Patty. It's it's it's I I don't see a quick solutions. For example, the board the Rawson police chief he went to North Texas university and has to do a study to see how many clubs they need. They came up with the ninety four number over the next five years that was presented to the Bart board a couple of months back or show back. We haven't seen any action. Are they going to do anything with it? Or is it the cycle of other staff. Here's a report. Here's what we need. Here's where we have the next time. Something big happens. We're going to be saying the same thing. That's the question. Are they gonna do anything is it gonna make it are they gonna deal considered that? Or we're going to be reportedly stats in another couple of months or something. Fill material are KCBS and critical insider filled returns tomorrow morning with STAN and Susan.

"They really really wanted it using sports figures all the strengths of Dallas Fort Worth. And are what are those the strength? The Dallas strip malls. American Airlines other corporate partners there Emmett Smith Jerry Jones, Emmitt Smith, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Jones, your friend, Emmett Smith. Yeah. But you get Monterey. If they really wanted it building up talking about North Texas university of Texas SMU TCU. Well. Now. Now, I gotta do it. Yeah. Sorry, North Texas a whole tried to do it. They didn't get it. Either. Man. You mean Denton didn't sell them debts and did not sell. This falls didn't push them over the top the little far from Dallas. But no, Wichita falls did not put them over the top. All right. So yesterday on day one among the two hundred bills proposed by your statewide, political heroes, your moral, compass for everything taxes. Of course, there was a proposal made HP sixty three that would change an ounce of marijuana possession to two hundred and fifty dollar fine rather than two thousand no jail time rather than six months, which of course, is one of the greatest banks for the buck. Anyone would ever know by putting someone in jail for six months for an ounce of marijuana? What a great return that is. So then attention-getting reading now since taking office as governor at the beginning of two thousand fifteen Greg Abbott has been seen as impediment to cannabis reform in Texas. Now. Previously, Richard Perry was no deal. No dice, no way. No way because he knew the meaning of the primaries. And so I mean, again think of the small spectrum we're talking about here. We're not talking about legalization. We're barely even talking about medical marijuana state. I mean, that's that's how far we are way. When you're talking about a Bill proposed, and it will not pass because he has a d next to his name would simply take away. A ridiculous punishment for an ounce of marijuana. That's it don't want saying you're going to be running around the bog in your mouth. It'd be doing that. So it's a pretty small. I mean, this is a really small step, right? And it's not going to happen. No. I believe I saw list of things that that Danny said was dead on arrival. Dan, Patrick said dead on arrival. Yeah. Maybe we should jail people longer for an ounce of marijuana. That's a great use of your money. So Abbott says that he did not support an expansion of the state's restrictive medical marijuana program. Quote. I'm still not convinced yet that that's medical marijuana shows you how far behind we are on the Kirk medical marijuana to me should be a given. If you have someone suffering from a heinous disease, you should allow them any way possible to get relief and medical marijuana. To me, it is it is less less of a threat than going getting some of these opioids pharmacy. It's absolutely less of a threat. I think it's immoral for anyone to care enough to tell you and your doctor not how to deal with your horrific pain. But that's you know, here we are having this discussion if there's a spectrum of completely no we'd to legalizing were barely the needle is barely passed. No. We'd. Oh, yeah. Herself far from swing. The other way. He said that he's not convinced yet about medical marijuana Grand Canyon away from that. Yeah. So not only is this guy's Bill, which is again still waiting for someone to make a reasonable argument against a tax payer based reasonable argument against not jailing people for six months for an ounce. I haven't heard one yet. No, not one not one argument that it's a good investment on your behalf. That said Greg Abbott, quote, I'm still not convinced yet. Governor while you're not convinced he's not convinced because he wants to win reelection. That's all he cares. Like everybody else. Governor you you. You are. He's a whore are more popular than Richard Perry. You could win till the cows come home governor, right? What's wise answering this way? Why should he say anything? Otherwise, he's got it made why take a risk taker which is amazing that this is risky. But apparently, politically this is risky mean. To say, I'm still not convinced about medical marijuana in this day and age back is how do you know? Yeah. What what medical school? Did you go to? That's the response. I don't know. I hope you and your doctor can figure it out done. What's the problem? So. We're getting a one one day. We got a reminder of how it's not going to happen. It's not we're not even you're not even close to talking about legalization. You're talking about one instance, two thousand dollar fine versus a two hundred fifty dollar fund. That's all we're talking about the guy who propose again with a D next Tuesday. Which means you will not pass. He didn't say I can't believe we don't just legalize all he did was take one zero off of the penalty. It's still a penalty, which I think some of us think is absurd by itself. So we are. We are light years away. And I I don't know. I mean the change. I assume is coming as John Carter said you better wake up. Yeah. Bribe's better wake up obviously in the. The legislature. They've got the power, right? Democrats made some games from not enough to change anything measurably, right? And I don't know win. Well, I mean, I guess it's changed some were sitting there talking about Williamson county is blue. So. But even then I mean, Democrats didn't push this. I mean this. This guy is is viewed as an outlier for a very simple reasonable Bill. It's rare that those ever exist. How about we not put people in jail. Okay. Is that really that crazy? I would probably agree on on small small measurements less there in small towns. And then law enforcement wants to lock you up and take that money as fast as possible. More laws or cottage industry, I guess can someone again, this is the fault of Democrats. I fall Beto for this to get someone not be making the pitch to small town, Texas. You know, what is better than jailing people and taking their money you growing crops and making money yourself. He that money spread around to all of you. It's not spread to law enforcement. That's the better argument. And that has been completely screwed up by anybody running for office was not making a pitch to some Baptist church in east, Texas. Hey, small town, Texas things aren't so great. When a chance to make them better. Here's how on different levels. And I know you're gonna say, well, they would they would Bumi out of town. They might a few of them might not though. Okay. Stay where you are. Go ahead. Stay right there. And by the way, check on Morgantown West Virginia sometime and see how I think we need to ask people like chief Manley ARTAS bad on her police say, you know, what they would say. But they're they're not the legislature. They're not rural Texas. They're just the opposite. They have stuff to do. They've real crime have real issues. Not locking up some kid coming back from Brekenridge pronounce a weed. Yeah. I mean, they would laugh at you. Steve Bannon laugh he's chasing bombers he doesn't need to worry about small amounts of members with announce a wheat. I tell you what you get out there and podunk, Texas, and they'll shake you down. They'll gladly pull you over literature card. Absolutely. They'll take that two thousand. There you go. So even Greg Abbott sounds like now. No. Not happening. Not talking about it. The governor in the wheelchair with his disability act. Like a man who doesn't have a disability. You think there's some and that's like the stem cell thing. I don't know why people are so afraid of stem cell research because that is there at the cutting up that cutting doing so many wonderful things, of course, and male medical marijuana. Look somebody in the eye who suffering what whatever whatever malady and say now, I think opioids it'd be better for you. Yeah. Yeah. That's a great outlet. But we're discounting what matters most not health, not the law, not productivity. Get reelected. Elected. Yes. Pander pander panda. You're listening to the best of Jeff and Ed. Dot com. You're listening to the best of Jeff. Ed..

"Maryland is a slow start when they came back in the second half. They started putting up points and then last week, install, sir. They had a real fast start in that second half could not have been more stale. So h they're just it's it remains to be seen. How Texas can play the game. But we shall see in a few. We should see time for our first scoreboard report brought to you by Dr Kelly Cunningham, Austin, Ortho, biologic stack of Cunningham can fix you up. If you've had a sports injury, that's Dr Kelley Cunningham and Austin, Ortho biologics big twelve football action this afternoon, Oklahoma over Iowa State thirty seven twenty-seven, but it was a struggle for the Sooners is is state would not go away. But oh, you wins by ten another good game for the sooner state looked really. I was impressed at how good they look. Their offense is deadly say, Texas cannot overlook state disease. Now, they they cannot they cannot do that. Also Kansas over Rutgers today. Guess I said Kansas, Kansas, Kansas. You know, let's let's are they for real well, they defeated central Michigan last week. And then they got a home win over. Rutgers who will be at the bottom of the big ten but still a big win for Kansas two in a row. Fifty five fourteen. Also, a great going going on in Lubbock right now, Houston and Texas Tech tied twice. Twenty eight twenty eight what a game that is really. This is a big cliff Kingsbury game. He needs to win really also Boise state and Oklahoma state or playing right now at Oklahoma state leads Boise state thirty four to fourteen as added somewhat surprised because Boise Boise state came in with high hopes and really playing well, and they lead early in the game and also Duke is leading the Baylor bears, and this is ugly for baiter dukes leading twenty three to six twenty three six right now. Is not basketball. Yeah. I was gonna say Baylor is that that program has a lot of changes to make. They have a lot of uphill battles to do. But I can't expect much from Baylor. And now he can't also nationally Auburn Leauge LSU twenty one thirteen earlier today. Georgia over middle, Tennessee, forty nine twenty twenty-seven. Syracuse over Florida state. Yes, I said Syracuse over Florida state thirty to seven and Clemson over Georgia Southern thirty eight to seven what in the world's going on with Florida state, Florida state. I mean that I was not very impressed with their quarterback Francois. They just kind of dead today. Look dead and what a window for Syracuse. That's very that's cool. There may be an upset brewing in Madison, Wisconsin and BYU or tied twenty one twenty one eleven minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Boise state is scored again. Now, it's thirty four twenty one thirty four twenty one. Oklahoma state leads Boise state, Michigan Lee. SMU twenty eight thirteen in the third quarter at somewhat of a moral victory for us. They just limit Michigan to Twenty-eight. Absolutely. You know, after hearing all these games, it kind of you know, it almost angers me because three weeks ago, you would have assumed that this Texas and USC game would have been the marquee game the weekend with college game day and the whole nine, but since they've just had such bad starts. This is kind of a forgetful game eight. Oh, yeah. It is. Let me give you one more score. Before we go to break, North, Texas university of North Texas leads Arkansas thirty four to ten and that game is at halftime. Let me repeat that North Texas leads Arkansas thirty four to ten what a disastrous law the razorback. It would be the Chad Morrish in Arkansas if they lose that game. All right. We're broadcasting live this afternoon. The end zone club live from thirty. Martin's place twenty eight oh, eight Guadalupe. I had my OT just a little while ago. It was delicious my pregame meal.
