"Now. You were not a garden designer. Then and here you came to this place, and there's views of mountains and feels, and it feels like a big open place, but. You weren't a garden designer. SORTA figured out how to make a plan. And you speak about in the book about measuring the House and measuring the distance to things and kind of drawing and taking photos and kind of pinning up that and some inspiration on almost like a mood board to get started like you know to figure out what you were going to do, yes. Yes I came here not as a gardener. But I felt that I needed to learn really quickly. And and the way I learned was that. I had been farming and. As I. Tell Maybe in the book I made. Five thousand dollars at it. My first year felt great, and I made five thousand dollars at farming my last year and I'd had enough. And I landed a seasonal job restoring a half miles worth of white, pine and hemlock hedges at the Saint God's national historic site, in Cornish, which was the garden of Augustus Saint Gaudens and was part of an artist colony that included architects, landscape, architects and artists. Like Gerald Plot and Ellen Shipman And I really immersed myself. In the Garden Gardens, but it, but then in learning about the gardens that those artists had made. A really came to gardening? As an art form I. And then I had to learn. How to draw. and. Deal with hard scape, which still not very good at. <hes> but the National Park. Service was great about supporting. It staff. By providing training and I spent a couple years running down to Boston to Cambridge to the Radcliffe Institute and to the Arnold Arboretum and guarding the woods and learning the trade there. Okay, I'm applying it. <hes> on the job at Saint Gaudens and here and in some of the other Corner Gardens. I see so. One of my favorite parts of the book, besides all those big leafed plants in that was seventy foot, long border or something. It's just magnificent. Is that you make a list in the book that I find especially helpful I think you call it guiding principles and and I know this was after the fact because you started making the garden in nearly thirty years ago or twenty years ago, and you wrote the book just recently, but but it's good for those of US making Gardener Getting Ready to find tuna. Revise our gardens to think about guiding principle so is this something like this sort of self assessment? What do I really care about? Is this something you do with clients when you first visit there places? If the let me get away with it, yes! And, sometimes, sometimes more successfully than than others. Yeah I don't have a form. That I had a a client, but I I WANNA. I as a designer WANNA be able to understand the context. The built context, the living context the landscape context. And the social context as well as how the <unk> Oman Gardner is going to use the US the space use the garden, and what their what their goals

"Trace fossils have might have been left by animals in that area. More than one hundred million years before the crashing waves on the beach. They were hitting rocks that have been formed in river valleys and rift valleys one hundred and five million. Years ago when Australia was still connected to Antarctica. It was near the south pole. This was one of the most fantastic aspects of doing this field work was looking for these traces of dinosaurs. That lived near the south pole. Sadly, their bones are very rare in that area. But what it also happened was tracks were very rare too. So we had been searching for nearly three weeks, and we had not found any dinosaur tracks at all. As we're walking down the beach, though, I see some little boroughs fossil Burrows that I recognize as being made by insect larvae, Andy's insect larvae. I also remembered a time I've been on a riverbank up in the North Slope of Alaska, and I'd seen modern insect. Burrows have looked just like those so immediately I thought this is the right environment. This is the right place where these dinosaur tracks could have been preserved. So my colleagues say walk ahead of me. They're also looking for bones. I'm not that interested hence the title. Oh, my book. But as I'm walking along a big slab of rock to my left catches my eye. I turned heilige slowly to my left. And I realized that there's this impression in the rock that looks like three fingers had been stuck.

"Hold a pilot and one passenger. So oftentimes your flying into remote hunting locations in Alaska, you're getting st- you get staged up somewhere on some remote, large airstrip and then use superclubs to do the last little leg of bringing you in. That's fairly common. Yeah. Be from strip along the highway somewhere to, you know, the hall road or one of the, you know. Our highways around the state. We've done that before too, where we driven do a place and had a plane, meet us there and shuttle us in, you know, that's closer to the Hutton's spot than, say, Anchorage or Fairbanks over the pilots coming from yet or gets elaborate like there's a, there's a anywhere you haunting if you're hunting like the western Brooks range. So basically up toward the portions of Alaska that seem to be. Looking over into Siberia. There's a area there you go to Fairbanks drive up to lake. No strip. Drive up to a strip or Alaska pipeline rooms onto some at one air carry that we've used the hunt caribou, you drive up to an actual strip isn't a strip. So landing place. Get on a plane there in go land at another strip in a Bush community in like an off the grid community, and they're gonna float plane and take the float plane to go land up on lakes up in the Cariboo country in in the North Slope tons of different configurations, or we've also hunted sheet where you load your stuff from your truck into super Kaban. Yeah, flap in that too. But this particular area is a little bit of a hall and bigger like a greater distance than you're gonna cover efficiently in in superclubs. So we flew out to a remote military airstrip. Do we name that one? Not yet. No. Shelby. Remove military airstrip. It's not military. I think it was built by Bill by the military outs could retain gravel strip. There's a lot of those in Alaska. Yeah, they're scattered around. Yeah, for sure. We fly in air all six of it. So we got two hundreds and four guys in our crew. We've, we fly out to this strip and it's like a real hub of activity because it's a big enough airstrip do you can get big aircraft in there and bring in quad runners, side-by-side, 's, all manner of vehicles. And then there's an elaborate road network that leads out here. And so it's like a place to. Fly in stuff set up a camp and then cruise around like on this whole isolated road network trail network crews, Ron hunt this vast area like like moose care. Boo country. I got a quick question is that is that road system attached to anything? If you were. Wanting to drive in or is it totally independent outside of that era, dramatic Nautica mountain. I think they'll Alaska rant because on the other side of the Alaska range. Right dangerous. Yeah, you couldn't dry right there. I mean, you get snow machine there in the winter. Yeah, but there's not as not rose, not a row. So people come in there in large aircraft sometimes in the confli and stuff like we just had..
