"Of Washington Medical Center and she served for thirty years in the Air Force Nursing Corps as well and let's just go quickly back to our callers to Khalil. Who's calling from Detroit Michigan Khalil? You're on the air. Hello how're you doing? I'm doing well go ahead. I mean at the team could help other Members on your show. They're calling in what we've done as of yesterday and changes are coming in almost every hour. We're getting tons of emails changes from the top down how we're getting things done As of yesterday we turned our Pacu unit. Which is posting care. Unit this unit when After surgery patients come out and they rest in it before they can go into phase two and then back to the room so we turn that unit into a covert units and nine. We're keeping the ICU. Units in for regular ICU patients. That are still getting sick. You know people tend to forget in these times people are still getting sick their surgeries heart surgeries cancer. Patients still need ICU beds. So what we've done is turned our PECCI you in into the covert unit and what is wrong with that is that these units are not negative pressure so Everyone could be ten exposed. It's in the air so now we have to use more masks and we're running short on that although we're walking around looking like we're walking no mood Pretty much walking around in space suits everyone's covered head to toe in. We're keeping these on because all they almost because we're running out so this is a good tip for people that are running short issue but maybe turn their back your unit into a covert unit. We'll Khalil thank you so much for that. Call Professor Bridges. Did you want to respond to what he said about how Khalil said about changing Different parts of a hospital to cope with the number of covered patients. You might see absolutely I would say I in our hospital. We found Dr Best Friends are engineers. They know all about airflow and have been just absolutely incredible in helping US turn. Turn some of our rooms into those negative floor rooms. I think in your in a disaster plan right now you have to say. Where do we need to provide care? And then if we have if we have to surgeon expand or capabilities. Where is that going to happen So identifying where patients. Who are Kobe positive? Who are under investigation are going to receive that care. And how are we going to think? Also careful those other people who are still in the hospital requiring care so I think each hospital is coming up with innovative game plan. I what I think is real important right now. Is that sharing that lesson? What we're finding across the nation is you know I've been on phone a friend at other major healthcare systems. Let's make sure we're thinking about this the same way. Have you come up with strategy so I think that's that's key it if I am so sorry to interrupt you professor bridge but I'm just curious and forgive me if this is? I don't even know if this is too simplistic question. But if we're sort of on a war footing regarding trying to deal with the corona virus maybe I'm just GonNa lean on again on your experience as an air force member of the Airforce Nursing Corps like is there actually ru a place for the military the United States military here to should they be building temporary. Hospitals should be it. Should they be using their knowledge deep knowledge and sort of how to quickly respond to the these of big logistically complex? Needs Right here on on. Us soil. Well I think you have to. I just what I see on the blogs that particularly through your national guard you have in every state the capabilities and the resources and those individuals are already in your states. So I think again A. Set collaboration between your government leadership in your public health. And what do I need in my community right now because it's going to be different and in every one of those those communities we here at the some of the Navy ships are steaming up and they're going to provide support for the patients who don't have covert so? I do think there are plans going on but again. I think you've sat collaboration. Between the military. The government leadership took to bring those those resources there. Okay and I think you're about to say before interrupted you with that question that there was something also really important. The most important thing that you wanted to point out I think dertouzos number one. There are some right now. The key is don't recreate the wheel. There are resources that are available already on from professional organizations for for physicians nurses. On what are the basic state that you need to know? I think that's really important right now to to use that that evidence the most important thing right now is we actually we. We know how to take care of these patients we take care of patients with acute respiratory diseases. Every day we take care of patients who are in shock every day we take care of patients who are in isolation the combination is though obviously you put all three of them together and the massive numbers. We're going to expect but I think it's important understand. We we have really good evidence based care on how to how to best care for these patients and then when we bring in individuals who maybe aren't in that direct ICU. Care what are the? What's the care that they need to do to augment the character of other other patients where we can draw on their expertise sell? You know. I think that's the lesson we learned in the military. You figure out who your experts are in your in your facility. And you draw on their their expertise and I think that's what's going on right now. Well Professor Bridges Standby because I want to now turn to Minnesota where Mary Turner joins us. She's joining us from Robbins. Dale Minnesota she's president of the Nurses Association and a medical intensive care nurse at North Memorial Medical Center as well Mary Turner. Welcome to on point. Hello MAGNA FROM MINNESOTA. Thank you so much for being with us today. What are you hearing from your fellow? Nurses in Minnesota about what they're experiencing day to day as with corona virus. Well I actually have the dubious honor of actually being an intensive care nurse on the designated Code Nineteen floor in our hospital I visited our floor the other day. I'm actually a night nurse I was there during the day The hustle snow days. Have a very eerie feeling. You know it used to be visitors. Were welcomed and the whole families would come when their patients were in the hospital but now the hallways are empty and we need to go up to a floor like my and everybody has an isolation it has very quiet and eerie feeling and and even though our floor because we're a level one trauma we we have like. Now we have the resources that we need. We have the gown. We have the masks. The ninety five masks we have this shield we have the packers you know because as a level one trauma hospital. We're constantly doing so-called disaster drills. So we're better prepared than some of the other hospitals with just having even having a good supply of Pampers and goggles and things like that you know so I feel fortunate that I work at the hospital that I do have. However that doesn't mean that the nurses on the floor are feeling comfortable with the rationing of the P p. e. r. protective equipment. Because of the fact that I really feel like if we could get the testing Stepped up I mean. Now they're saying at least in Minnesota the three categories that can get tested our healthcare first responders. That's the first category. So second our inpatient patience and then the third is the one in the long term care. Well our nurses would. Their anxiety would decrease so much if they really did category two and was able and get it. There's a shortage of the tests but that would decrease the anxiety so much if the impatience could be tested right. Not necessarily the one showing symptom because they don't so we are rationing on the floors where they're told them less you're working in those high acuity areas like the ICU's and the cove in nineteen floors. You're not necessarily going to get all the supplies that you need married. You mind if I ask you. I mean since you you are a night nurse and you're on the floor every night. What has your hospital told you about. Say How long you ought to use the ninety five mask that you've been given what happens on our floor. Is We get my? My mask is sitting in a in a paper bag with my name on it and we are using that end ninety five until until it severely soiled or the The the fifth. Because as you put it on and off the fit the field starts to loosen up and the elastic around. The ears starts to get in so that it doesn't at once it gets to that point where it's too flimsy. Ben We can get a new one and so we may use that same end up ninety five per few days depending on How much we're going in and out of our issue now one thing we are doing and I think I do. Nurses across the country are potentially doing this working out a system where our ad pumps can sit outside of our negative pressure so that we don't have to go in every time that we have to do something with their IV pump and so we're getting an extra tubing etc to be able to bring all of those pumps outside the room. The other thing that we're doing that all the hospital should be doing. They think is that we have the capacity for fifty three. Icu beds. And I believe we are. We are ramping up to seventy and we are also converting my floor all the rooms except maybe one or two are being or have been or being converted to negative pressure. Rub who marry. There's something you said a little earlier that I just wanted to hear more about because you said that you want you. The nurses want to see more people getting tested right especially as symptomatic if they're in the hospital to do because it sounds like there's so much uncertainty of as he as you work from patient to patient right exactly not knowing out there who who has it or not and that and and the person on the different people on the line that have alluded to better communication. I'm sitting here in my room going. Yes yes tactically. What needed because nurses are very educated people and we do so much better when when the powers above are transparent with us and explaining to us. I mean things like You know the ice us and our our hustles very happy to know that twice a week at nine o'clock they have a whole conference call that any. Icu nurse can get on so that we can get our questions answered. This helps so much and and to have the hospitals appear like. We're not the last thing you WanNa do to. A nurse is appear like you're hiding things from them. Well Mary we just got a couple. Like short period timeless. I've got one more question for you because I hear your professionalism shining through..
