Scientists study volcanic lightning
"Opening we're just a couple days away from the fortieth anniversary of mount St Helens nineteen eighty eruption N. as como as Ryan Harris tells us all these years later the mountain is still teaching us lessons there's a lot of learning at mount Saint Helens says Dr Seth Moran the scientist in charge of the U. S. geological survey's cascades volcano observatory who tells me there's still a lot being gleaned from the main event and the eruptions that happened in the weeks and months after to understand the Russian dynamics how the cloud evolved questions right now people are getting into about the generation of volcanic lightning and there was no lighting that was observed and reported and we can see some deposits in a pretty good idea of the timing of some of those deposits relative to say when volcanic lightning was was being generated this other some interesting ideas that are starting to be developed about when volcanic lightning occurs an interruption sequence and what it means when it starts happening in terms of I'm gonna bash in the air how far to go in and things like that Moran says the big lesson though is still the lateral blast in landslide caused by the eruption which broke trees like they were matchsticks or burned everything in its path because of the hot gases that escaped not to mention burying much of the area in deep debris and sending a mud flow down the North Fork of the total river the landslide was what took the pressure off of the magma that intruded into the volcano and I generate the lateral blast and it was certainly appreciated that the bulging of the north flank that was moving out at a rate of five or six feet a day that that was producing a flank that was unstable and it was certainly understood that rockfalls landslides avalanches were in the future if nothing happens but it wasn't appreciated how big that website it wasn't how discontinuous it was gonna it was gonna be Amaran says since then geologists have learned a lot about what deposits from that kind of a landslide looks like around volcanic areas and I've taken that lesson and applied it to volcanoes around the world and it's now much more appreciated by the volcano community that landslides are part of what volcanoes can do and that that is something that in certain situations where you've gotten unstable flank that's obviously building outwards that that's a very real thing that needs to be taken into account when doing hazardous substance those hazard assessments are important because doctor Moran reminds me of something we should all keep in mind not only is mount St Helens still active but source several other cascade volcanoes including mount

Just they weren't allowed to stay over wal walking in our own from candy. Absolutely. So for me to do a masters project Ida think of some kind of an interesting project, so he could monitor this wolf and still have enough data. So what I did was decided I'm going to look at because I was a trapper I decided I would look at this wolf and compare her food selection at price election and habitat use with coyotes within her territory and outside of our territory. So I caught and call it a lot of coyotes. In the meantime, I kept trying to catch more wolves in there weren't any. So that was the core. My master's thesis. But how is fascinating how they were. Reacting on the landscape now when you're doing that you you presumably had like a course load. You had to do. Yes. How did you balance that with being on the one hand you're in some classroom with a bunch of ding bat students right in the next on the other hand, you're up trapping wolves. I alternated with queer in the quarter system that so I do a quarter in the field and then a quarter in school in the quarter in the field and go back and forth. "And your fun or abilities and check both of them off to being a plus is psych saying or i'd i'm a noam generous but on the other hand those good deal of time where i would go across town in by carrots at two cents less per packet or five cents less burp packet because there was a miserliness about me there's always the flip side to everything positive or everything negative i think i learned that from an alcoholic counselor when i was sobering up who said you know lineup your pluses on a piece of paper in your minuses and once you do that you kind of see oh my goodness and it's an all my goodness in a detrimental way and it's it is positive it's very it's very enlightening to know that if you have a temper which i do i also have a generosity of spirit so i love that that's such a great exercise to go through and i did spend probably three or four years working very hard on myself trying to see what i was doing that was very enlightening in it has been a source of power and energy ever since i'm thinking about your paintings and how it seems like color is this great metaphor for your life because your paintings are so full of energy very colorful very bold it you not all held inside anymore it's no they're you know painting gave me a voice i show at the university museum i think that was probably my most gratifying moment and once i started painting and really started painting what i felt whether it was in reaction to the landscape or it was painting about women's being enclosed in boundaries and women breaking boundaries i didn't care what anybody else saw it what i needed to do was break boundaries and that gave me gave me permission why do you think it's important for us to give ourselves permission especially as women that's a hard question because really we're not given permission to be there still all the same underneath or the same vibrations of women should stay within the house and not be involved in the world outside and certainly not be confronted about anything i think that's so stoltifying and i think it's not what our natures are i don't want to be there one of the reasons i wrote the book to was so that there are young women out there who have perhaps gone through being abused or being alcoholic or being drug addicts or whatever i was hoping that the book in some way would give young woman a sense of they they too could do what i have done which is climb the ladder out of the coal and hit a home run my book is north of crazy and that is a little bit because i have a cabin on the little north fork of crazy woman creek and a little bit just because i don't fit into any particular category but as been the biggest surprise coming out of either writing the book or publishing the book for you that you weren't expecting the impassioned response that i got from people mostly when people come up and say you know i had something like that happened to me and you wrote about it so well it has given me the chance to be open about it and i've had a number of people say that may you women and that's that's the sweetest thing stop and that's what i hope for but you know wondering if you can paint us a picture of who nell g is snap oh i'm a kind woman i'm a strong woman i i live in wyoming on a riot same rights rape moved to fifty years ago i look on the big horn mountains with all and delight on a daily basis i have just such a delight in being part of nature being part of the field in front of the house being part of the garden whether it's trees or bugs or dogs are dear i'm an abstract expressionist painter galleries don't like me because i don't paint do your in stream or elkin mountains there my way of speaking they were.

"The so in the summer we had fishing and fishing with my hands under the rocks and on these different irrigation ditches along the north fork river here there's all these pools and all these big rocks the fish will go in a nest and as young children you don't have a big profile whatever you can sit there and you have nothing to do but wait and then you just wait and grab them especially at the head gates that pool and you could get this whole gaggle of fish and it was very funny was wasn't until i was an adult i ever fished with a pole and then there was four h four h was big event here for all of us ranch kids in the valley one of the fun stories is that my sister has huge heart and every animal she was supposed to take care of became her pet so when she was little she had this sheep called spot and spot was like he was one of those tall hampshire sheep and that she followed her around like a dog it was always a problem like when with the family got in the car to go somewhere the cheap would be running after the guard come with or whatever and she used to ride the sheep and you know we used to cook the wagon or you know some kind of buggy on the back of the sheep and robin gopher ride and whatever it was hysterical in the fall they were turkey shoots in the winter there was skiing at medicine bow sledding and ice skating it seemed that wherever there was a sheet of ice there would be a gaggle kids iceskating and our parents over the bonfire and hot cocoa to keep us warm i just i had this magical childhood and we had so much freedom compared to what children have today we walked and wrote our bikes everywhere nobody had to worry about anything it was it was it was really nice so some young people that i know now they talk and they complain about how the rate of change in wyoming so slow which i consider such a positive because i have lived on the east coast where i lived in this area it was like farming land in ugo back ten years later and his completely.
