"Rabiot's Salem Street in the north end. Just as the pandemic hit, right? It was December 2nd We closed. Um, we just started was went that we're all excited for Christmas. Uh, New Year's. We were playing under New Year's bash. And right after that March, it was 16 or 17 was a shutdown and was basically I think it was three months of shut down, and then they started with The mask, the six FT apart the plexiglass. Um And then there was a million other things that you couldn't have any more than six people at a table. Yeah, you couldn't have any more than 25% occupancy. Yeah. So I mean, if your place only holds 70 people. I mean 20% of the 14 15 people in the place. How are you going to make your nut on that It's impossible. Yeah, I couldn't believe how tough because you know Jenny and I on dining playbook. You know, in the earlier stages of the pandemic, the first four or five months we tried to focus on the food pantries and, uh, the fundraising charities and the people that were Bringing food to those who didn't have it. What restaurants had to do. We're doing to survive because it seemed like every day you never knew what was going to happen next. Keep in mind when it first hit they were saying was going to be a couple of weeks, right? It's almost two years now, right? Nobody knew what was going on. It was It was a trial and error at that point. Yeah. So how did you make it through luck? I mean, I had a lot of friends. Um, that came and supported us throughout the entire pandemic, And, uh, I got to be a voice on social media. People like what I had to say. And they came fun on in from all around, not just the United States. But around the world. You'll forgive me, Christian. I'm not going to ask any questions about your instagram character. Okay, just know that it's there and know that when you walked into the building, several people immediately address you as a legend. Like they can't believe it. So let's just let that go. And, um what about dealing with the city of Boston and not just with the pandemic? I've asked this question over the years because sometimes Get the impression that the city and others not just Boston, it seems like they go out of their way to make it difficult to do business. It is tough, I mean, You've got to go through licensing and you got you got to have permits for this premise for that inspection. This inspection that which I guess it's all good, But I mean, where's where's there's gotta There's a fine line. I mean, if you're cutting boards, and they come in and inspect and this the slices and you're cutting boards are little too deep. You could get fined for that. You know if there is not the right hinge on your freezer if it's not locked, uh, the right way. If there's You know, there's a million things that you could be cited for if you're not Up to the standards. I mean, you're getting find. It's it's It's not a cakewalk. Did you ever get fined? Not on the board of health issues during the pandemic. I got fined pretty hot. Uh, that was actually more while I was asking about. So, uh, so during the pandemic, what, like a capacity thing, or Yeah, so I had six people too many, um, one night. And they they took my license for two days. So somebody comes in and Looks around like a spy, and they noticed that you have what they count heads. So 311. We call it the rat line. It's that really exists. God, that is that. No, but that's what everybody that's around the rat line. Yeah, so people, right? Right. And you are? Yeah, they walked by looking at the windows and they use their beautiful camera phones nowadays. Mm. They see it to count, and then they send somebody in. They cite you. You gotta go to a hearing the next week, and then you get hit, But I mean, when you're You're moving. People are not all the time and you're not sitting there counting. Okay to left to come in one going. You're not doing that You're trying to. Well, you're trying to make a living not only for yourself, but for your staff. Exactly. They were dying just as much as everybody else. So, Yeah, and then not only that, but are you distributors? You're not ordering the wine as much you not only his bread as much. I mean, the trickle down effect affects everybody. And So when we got that kind of fine, we said, this is this isn't no joke. I mean, they're not playing around with this as well. People don't realize two days of a license means a lot to the average restaurant owner. It takes a lot to make that back. Absolutely. But I mean, they couldn't find you on a Tuesday and on Wednesday, slow days thinking you on Friday and Saturday, which is two best days. Yeah, I mean for that. I mean that. You know, there was no playing around at that point, it was it was like this. We mean business, but I mean, it's not a family of eight comes in And you tell a family of eight that came in the same car comes in your restaurant. Listen, I can put six you there in the two others, whoever you want to be used on that side of the restaurant that's hard to do. So you said people you get fined. So now we're feeling much like instagram. And I know I don't I don't get it. I got it. Just these are men They stay had. Yeah, Let's talk about the menu at rob Eos and again. So how many you're open less than two years then, right? Yeah, about almost two years. Talk about the menu some of the favorite dishes on the menu. The ones you see as the best on the menu, So we have a lot of seafood. We had fresh seafood every single day lobsters we have voiced the oysters, crabs open crab soft. Grab hot crap we got I mean anything You want to see food wise. We have a king crab legs, snow crabs we bring in. I got to stop you there because you have to understand. Justin is producing this show for the first time, And for the last minute and a half he's been looking at me saying Do your way over time. That's because I'm talking to the legend. Christian Sylvana. Yeah, it's rob EOS on Salem Street in the north End of Boston. How many days nights a week? Seven days. 77 days a week, 12 o'clock to 11 30. So you are doing launches? Yeah. All right. They're looking at different play different plays here, and I think you might see the parking spaces go away and let the travel lingo. So in case of course. Is an emergency fire trucks to get through here but close close that parking spaces down and allow them to come out onto the sidewalk. Really, being a vibrancy to that to that and make it feel like the old country. Yeah, but some of those restaurants in the north and a very small so they may have won two parking spaces out in front of the restaurant. I'm guessing that doesn't accommodate for many tables. No, it doesn't and again, it's just get to get us going and again. The guest is going to be you know, they're not going to flock that day one so they're going to come back. So it gets us going And then the restaurants can open up inside, Hopefully, very shortly behind that, and specifically when they open up and inside, it's going to be six foot social distancing as well. One of the key 80 years behind what was approved that we worked with the governor's team reopening team on PP able to put part plexiglass partitions in the smaller restaurants like in the North End. Yeah, we're six foot something that would take too much space and this will allow them to be able to open and for the guests to be saved the employees to be safe. So we're playing that the team allowed that to happen. I would guess that a lot of the restaurant owners here Her and the Massachusetts probably got a little frustrated when they saw restaurants right over the border in New Hampshire Open now for two weeks. I mean, I'm thinking for these guys every hour every day matters in terms of trying to bounce back and make back some of that lost revenue from the last couple of months. It's gonna be frustrating for them to see Rhode Island Open, seeing New Hampshire Open for outdoor dining. Have you got in that sense it all from some of the owners. Oh, there's no question. I mean, look, you know the restaurant in this free is the safest and we're made. To shine if you would in in an error where, you know safety, sanitation disinfection. Is critical because those standards we've always had and so we're ready, willing and able to safely serve our guest. Ah, and So, of course it's been frustrating. I mean, you know, we would have wanted to have been open assumes we closed if it was possible. So you know, seeing other states come online is frustrating. You know, Flipside realizing we've had a much bigger problem here than they've had in New Hampshire or Maine. Or even that Rhode Island, you know, no question about it, but ah, these guys are ready. They're goingto safely welcome everybody back in whether you're an employee or guest on DH, you're gonna have a great experience, and it's just going to look different will go. I'll get used to it. You know that used to seein a host or hostess greet us with a mask. But you know, it's It's getting a little bit more commonplace. And you know again, we're going to be ready, willing and able TTO welcome a guest back in very, very shortly, and Bob just playing devil's advocate. For a moment again. I'm just playing devil's advocate. Let's say Hypothetically, the governor, you know, says OK, we'll do 25% capacity or doesn't do anything at all and says we're going to wait another week or two and again. I'm just playing devil's advocate. Restaurant orders might see that and say, Well, wait a minute. We just had 20 and 30,000 people protesting in the city 9 10 nights in a row. Nobody had any problem with that. And now we can't open the doors to our restaurant. Yeah, well, I mean again, it's gonna common. Ah, common Topic of conversation. Ah, you.

The compassion and the Continued philanthropic efforts of the chef owners and restaurant owners across the state. It's it's It's really incredible attire warming. I gotta tell you, Bob. I was out jogging last weekend around Boston, and I said, You know what? I think I'll go through the North end and see what the mood is like, and I've had phone conversations and such with some of the guys I know in the business, in fact, Massimo from Aria Restaurant on the North end is going to be coming on this show right after you, but just jogging and then feeling I needed to stop and just walk. It was. It was really upsetting to see an area that is recognized not only in this country but around the world. People travel from all over the world to come to the north end of Boston, and to see so many of the doors shuttered ended a lot of cases seeing the restaurant owners kind of sitting or standing on the sidewalk and you've got a sense. They were just waiting to see what's next. And when can they get backto work and feed their families again? Yeah, I mean, out of all the areas in the state that form that's the neighborhood and I think I'm most concerned about and in the nail on the head of one I lived in and the card street there with my wife in the early years of our relationship. So you know many ways it's home for us. It is the greatest neighborhood. I think around and It's gonna challenge unlike any other because he is so densely packed with restaurants, which is why we love it. But without the influx of guest in, you know, visitors and travelers and tourism and business and sports and universities. We've got a huge challenge out like you. I walk those streets about a week and 1/2 ago I met with a bunch of restaurants down there and then walked. Hanover Street literally brought a tear to my eye walking down the middle of Hanover Street with zero traffic and seeing what I saw and what you saw. So you know what? Though? Those guys are resilient. They they are so ready to say we're gonna be out on our sidewalks were gonna be a great place to come. And I'm going to tell you I think people from dead um from framing him from Linfield and everywhere in between. I'm going to say you know what Let's go experience the North end like we usually can't. They're gonna come in and they're going to see a vibrant area and they're gonna see us getting backto life and they're going. They're going to be thrilled with what they see because those guys are going to safely operate for their guest and their employees first and foremost. And we're gonna We're gonna come back. We're going to be like the Phoenix rising. Well, you know what Bob? A lot of people don't realize places like the north End of Boston. Most of those restaurants or family run, family owned family staffed so when the doors suddenly have to shutter on their restaurants It's not just affecting the owner. It's affecting the entire family. Well, there's no doubt about it. Generations have worked there. And, you know Onda geun family members from foreign, you know, firing on And you know that from the old country? Oh, yeah. Folks live here. I mean, they come over to work for a summer. You know, it's it's an incredible incredible Community and again all the restaurants in Boston and all the restaurants across Massachusetts. It's the same, but that's just a very special place in it, and it's again one that's going to be really challenging what I would encourage hold that thought, Hold that encouraging thought because I do have to take a break, and I want to talk more about while the face too in the outdoor dining here in Boston, as well as Massachusetts and how that's going to roll out, so we've got Bob loves the president. Of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association will take a break. We'll be right back Thean Jin's making that noise again, Honey, Maybe it's time for an upgrade.
