COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Washington state
"First batch of corona virus vaccines have started to arrive in washington state ten months into the pandemic. But it's not going to change the situation significantly before the christmas holidays. People are advised to keep masking up and to practice physical distancing k. u. a. w. news anchor page browning is tracking the public health guidance and she joins us now for some frequently asked questions about the winter season page. Hi hey kim. So first of all the covid nineteen vaccine could start being administered tomorrow here in washington. How many people are expected to get at this winter. Yeah that's right well. What we know is that washington is expected to get two hundred twenty two thousand doses of the pfizer vaccine from now until january first and in total the state could get five hundred thousand two million doses by mid february so basically that means as many as a million people could have access to at least the first dose of the vaccine by about valentine's day but it could be much less than that depending on how well distribution goes and if maderna's vaccine candidate is also authorized right and just keeping in mind. There are over seven million people living in washington. It's still just a fraction of everybody. The holidays are coming upon us quickly. Hanukkah of is already underway. This week christmas kwanzaa other now. Eleven to twelve days away. So how can people best celebrate together safely. Well you've heard this before virtually is best. It's the safest at least if you do gifts open and video chat together. Do a food swap. Maybe caravan to see the lights. Something virtual and physically distance but we know some people will still gather in person despite public health guidance. So if people are going to expand their cove pod you do that by putting yourself in a two week quarantine and that should have started last friday if you plan to see your brother or mom or whoever on christmas day. And what about that shorter quarantine period. We've heard about from the cdc right well the the cdc and washington's department of health basically say this if you have to travel all of a sudden okay. Then you're your last case option is for you to quarantine for seven days. Then get tested for cove at the end of that with a negative result. All right well. Speaking of testing are the testing centers in our area. Ready for a pre holiday surge like we saw before thanksgiving well. I'll i'll answer that in two parts. Yes these free cova. Testing sites are ready for long lines of people. They're serving long lines of people basically every day already since the cases are spreading so fast in our state but this part two is public. Health officials don't want people just coming to get a test so that they can travel and to curb some of that behavior. The testing sites schedule has changed. So now you can schedule a kobe test. A couple days out but no further ahead of thanksgiving. You might remember. That was different people looking at cova test like or more in advance likely not for illness but so that they could have a thanksgiving event. Okay so the testing sites are prioritizing people who have symptoms of covid and i understand. There's a news site that's opening up. This week tells more about that. Yeah there's a new free testing site that's going to be the first on the east side opens tomorrow. And it'll be at bellevue college. This one's going to run monday through saturday and basically it's intended to serve. Yes bellevue but also is across a mesh. Maybe people as far out as north bend. And now we've got about a dozen free test sites in king county and as a reminder him their free sites they're funded by federal cares act dollars and those dry up january first anything else folks may want to know page kim. The outbreak is really really high right now. The highest it's ever been the daily average of new cases in washington is two thousand two hundred cases. That's how many people on average are infected every day in washington in march. The daily average was three hundred seventy. It's grim. But i will leave you this with this. There are brighter days ahead. That's what i'm trying to keep in mind. Local public health officials are hoping that now with a vaccine. This could be the last major holiday that will be under these strict
