"That is true. You get trapped in their world gilmore. D- this is an excellent comparison emotionally manipulated in the stain in the house. Which definitely happens when rory is having their fight with more rely later down the road. She ends up staying with richard and emily instead. Emily creates a bedroom for her much. Like norma desmond brains. All of joe stuff to her house and moves them in without her consent now. Emily doesn't take any roy's things but she does create a room for her and she does ask i. Yes yes so since interesting. Similarities there end like norma desmond pretty much everything she does over the top In this house is bananas super grandiose. Obviously emily and richard houses now but to lure ally she probably is a little bit over. The top like morbid desmond. This house is too grandiose. Yeah so no food served. But i think what this meant was huge top. She'll give you whatever you need to be there to be comfortable. It would be lavish well. And i think i've heard people comment before that. Emily really likes to show love through money in through buying things in you know you know the way she gives money for worries chiltern the way that she gives money for rory to go to jail and when rory says i don't want your anymore i don't want your money anymore. That's a huge deal to her. Into richard but especially to emily And both she norma desmond definitely try to buy people's affections Obviously emily is not quite as terrible as normal. Do not get me wrong. She is not on the same level. She is not evil eye. She has some twisted aspects to her relationships with her family. That's also true of every single person. Ever it feels like a normal person level of family dysfunction in a lotta ways. Yeah but they both definitely try and buy things to win your affection to win your presence to keep you around. And that i mean is exactly how norma tries to get joe to stay. She says what you want okay. You didn't want this. You don't want these catholics. You don't want these suits. Fine what do you want to give it to you. just stay. Don't go away. And then when she can't have him she's like well i can't have them. Nobody will bang bang. And that's exactly what happened in a year in the life. The alternative sure. Okay not so much. But yeah. And i mean i do remember an. Emily gilmore breakfast. When roy was staying there when she dropped out of yale and there was everything was on the table. Yeah rory had none of it because she wanted. Eat the muffin in her room. So no muffin at all. No muffins so kayla. So taylor her show. That's oh we're ready for close. Oh viewers you have been spared. Not seem kyle scary face. "Oh man. I use that line very frequently in life now But i love this about you. And i can't wait to keep hearing more so many other people though have tried to be norma desmond in the foremost parodies always that we love the one. The only one that has played her at least three times in different sketches. I saw and didn't know skits i did watch one of them. She calls herself nora desmond. Not yet but every other details almost the same. Yes max is. They're acting as crazy in protective as always at the first one. They go to a restaurant and she is just begging max to keep the fans away from her. There's there's no one paying any attention to her another one there at a roast and they're going to roast nor desmond and you can guess how well that goes. Let's just say most people end up dead. Thank you max. But in the end you know. Max has a little a little change of heart. When he's given the mike i have. Nonni grits filmstar northeast month for fifty years. I have directed her in twelve classic motion pictures. The world will never see another mike on the of incredible theatrical talent but she is matched as a human being. She is dedicated. She is involved. fees committed. Should be appreciate how this lady's just contributed immensely for business. Here's made hollywood today slum. Although famous for her dramatic roles north desma so has tremendous flair for comedy. Yes she has a lot of funny lines. Unfortunately they're all on. Her face has always been a soft spot in my heart for you. I think it's gas depending berlin to world on halloween. I send out as role so then in the final one. Max does kill someone for for her with a gun so that you know sticks with the movie but there's so many lines that are similar so you cannot they'll be in our tumblers gotta go watch them or just look them up on youtube. Carol burnett to follow up the one where he kills. Someone is the one where they're trying to rape her eulogy right. That's the one. I watched with trying to write her eulogy and ends up with them killing somebody else to write their eulogy make sense but there was also a recent. Snl sketch from two thousand thirteen. Jon hamm is in here and basically. She is just constantly ready for her close up at the door. I hope it's not a pirate in speaking baseman from the sunset boulevard. Miss gloria swanson from lalita. Mr james mason pokes i'm pie I don't really see a lot of evidence for as dressing maragos agreed you would wear costume. I'm a pie to tell about the actor. That's what i do. When i say i'm up high read by a which i mean christian wag great person for that. And she's got the hands the crazy ganders always and bonus. Jon hamm is actually doing a pretty great james mason impression among you might remember. James mason. plays judy garland's husband in a star is born malaysian interesting. While another nothing to note though is that she's introducing gloria swanson from sunset boulevard. But she's supposed to be the actress herself so but she's plane crazy and lord wants to set herself that people thought she was crazy after playing this role so yeah but also it's way funnier person would be crazy that crazy. Yeah but i mean. They also could've introduced her as norma desmond today. I guess that's true. Well in carol. Burnett gloria swanson and kristen. Wake or not the only people to play. Norma desmond did you know this. Oh in nineteen ninety three andrew lloyd. Webber made a version of sunset boulevard for the stage. It's a musical and it started with patti lupone. And then in nineteen eighty four. It came to broadway with glenn close and she has now played the role twice. She won a tony award for it. In nineteen ninety five g reprise role in twenty seventeen for a revival of the play. And they're about to make a movie of it all my goodness. I have heard none of this. Yeah so basically. We all know glenn close. Big deal was nominated for an oscar this year. Everybody kinda thought she was gonna finally win. She didn't so now. of course. there's lots of talkies. this is going to be the one. She's won a tony romo. She finally win an oscar for this in the play of course one tenth of oscars and the person that is going to be directing. It has won tonys for best choreography and basically this is going to be deal. I'm so excited to see this as a musical. Yeah i know my gosh and need to look up the music now in glenn close. I mean it's going to be great. Awesome ooh this is exciting so under the come out it is going to begin filming this fall so i suspect it will be a late. Twenty twenty release maybe early. Twenty twenty one. That's just my vast gas but if they're going to do the award season run probably later in the year. Never it is nice. That's exciting musicals man. They're the best. This'll be a good musical. I mean clearly already is because it. But i'll i'll be able to experience. Yes i agree. So should we talk about how this reference fits into the world of gilmore girls. No i'd rather talk about more parodies of people play norma desmond what like who like me. Just kidding. tug girls will should we mentioned this is not the only episode that mentions sunset boulevard. What they don't mention this amazing movie just the one time. No in fact it's four times..

"Who is trying to be in a talkie and now she was this movie also wasn fact. Gloria swanson's comeback. Much like much. Like norma desmond was trying to get her big comeback with her terrible film. This was actually swanson's comeback. It got her first golden globe win in her twenty something years of acting lots of connections but i listened to an interview with her. And it's with of course barbara walters and and she was ninety five at the time she was active up an atom hennelly. Very white But she did talk about you. Know the award. But also other effects from her playing the role of norma desmond. People are terrified of may because of that road lot of people. Look at as if i'm gonna go off anymore. Suddenly tokyo mac not not voice and that is at all not. There's no. i don't know anyone like that in california. It's kinda sad that people were scared of her because of that role while hopefully she could take it as a compliment meaning. She was a very good actress. Who had played a very convincing role. Go there we go. That can always happen to actors and actresses in different roles that they take on it can become their role ever. I mean that certainly happens like in dome series like harry potter over. Sure the hunger games they become that character only so it can be hard to to break out of that but this is at the end of her career so it's just kind of a way to remember her the end Some other people in this movie were played almost themselves course. The played himself but the bridge partners that she People that she played bridge with in the movie. We're actually other silent film stars in real life. They were in the movie but they were also in real life so again. It's these people who are have become little outdated obsolete if they can't transition into speaking in film whereas some of the actors who are in there. I know one of them. He went onto play in lots of movies as a probably in buster can move. I'm guessing but some of the people. Yeah they played themselves and in reality they were no longer no longer film stars. So it's kinda sad and kind of surprising that they took it on but you know luck there it could have always changed afterward but kind of interesting there that people were kind of playing themselves or at least their state in life will in. Did you know that will be demille helped. Make gloria swanson famous. Oh yes yeah. They worked on movies together in nineteen nineteen actually like that early on and which she goes to visit him in this movie. She wears a peacock feather in her hat. Which isn't oh my gosh to a movie. They made together decades earlier called male and female which i thought was really money. Yeah and also their nicknames for each other were the rare real life nickname. Remind me those. Mr demille which not that that's nickname. But that's what she always call him and then his or her was like young young lady or young young fellow young fellow while and he's not the only director in this movie that she had worked within the silent era. Did you realize that will know eric. Von stroheim who played max really was a director and he had directed glorious swanson in a movie called queen kelly however it also did not end well in real life no so this movie called queen. Kelly may in nineteen twenty nine. The original director was gone. Stroheim max but she fired him a third of the way through the movie because he was spending way too much money and then they went on to play these parts together Wow and the movie that she watches with. William holden is footage from queen. Kelly and all those old pictures of her are real old pictures of her. There's a lot of overlap. Between what is what is fiction and one is reality. The lions real blurred. Yeah this movie. It knows what's up getting to real still under full isn't it and no dialer. We didn't need to add on. We had pasted suggests daily faces like that ending. Or maybe one garbo idiot produced those stills and got in the is have forgotten what a star looks like. I told i know that scene where they watch a movie. She has this beautiful in home movie theaters she never has sleepers house which is great. If you're in denial about the rest of the world but it really was in a twenty five room mansion actually um wilshire boulevard. not sunset boulevard. Amman i know and they had to make some major refurbishments to this house to make it fit for the movie so they added the swimming pool which is a pretty big expense but they also did a huge redecoration inside to make it look as green does it does in the movie. You cannot see this house today. It had been nicknamed the phantom house because it remained empty for many years. Even though it was owned by j paul getty who you might know as the namesake of the getty museum in l. a. but it was destroyed in nineteen fifty seven on purpose. It sounds like it much like xanadu. However you know what this made me think of as we watch this movie and i was reading about. This house grey gardens refusing to acknowledge what's going on in the world staying inside her house and just not paying attention to the rest of the world getting lost in the past time and living in this really ridiculous twenty five room mansion. Yeah yeah that looks on occupied yoon emotionally manipulating someone to stay in the house. Yes wow very similar. Yeah don't do it. don't do it. Gloria or.

"Every time she sees sports. Yeah i don't buy it. No so policy does this actual reference come. The reference comes when law rely is getting ready to go to new york with. Alex and sukey and jackson and rory is going to stay home for the weekend. She's planning to bring justice. Friday night dinner with just grandma end and they have a little discussion about what should be happening for the after party. So probably grabs working the logistics. Tonight i am going to study at school. That i'm going to grandma's from their justice driving straight from work and then he showed me who come here is gonna drop matthew. Well guess that makes sense. I thought although don't know what are you sure. That's the best way to do it. Yeah y well he just means. You're coming home to an empty house. that's you're doing. Yeah but it might be kinda lonely year. Did you think about staying at mom's overnight. Yeah they've got those fancy beds that don't sag. And you're guaranteed a great norma desmond style breakfast. The next morning you don't have school works out perfectly also a little background before we move on. We are skipping episode. Three thirteen dear. Emily and richard. Which is the flash back at to see. Laura like giving birth to rory in. Meanwhile in present day rory going to see jiji's birth with sherry at the hospital And we mostly skip that one because we couldn't find a great reference that would discussion. But also i don't really look at episode now. You're not a lower. i flashback. Appreciator the young worldwide is not lauraingraham. Doesn't work for me. Yeah i li- i mean. It's something different. I i watch it when it when it comes up but pretty no no strong opinions from me. Okay well but it might be relevant that this is the episode where we're clashing fact. Laura getting pregnant as a teen giving birth and now she's feeling a little anxiety thrown about her own daughter. Yeah so when she suggests that rory stays back in hangs with grandma. An has norma desmond style breakfast. What the heck did you think she meant by that. No idea did not know who norma desmond was or what kind of breakfast she serves pictured like like A chef or something like that. 'cause yeah Emily would serve a a nice breakfast. We've seen her do it before with rory when she's come over but yeah i didn't know what about you i think about the same thing. I assumed it meant a great breakfast. Because she's trying to sell us to rory We know they love good food. That's about when you left again too. Showy love do it so we're talking about the one the only the nineteen fifties classic sunset boulevard. Oh yes i we could just sing the music on our own like you know because we definitely never seen this podcast. No but the music in this movie is jury as in pretty nice pretty much everything else. In this movie i mean. Did you like this movie. I guess i should say i did good. If you like this movie. I really liked this movie Not in the same way as xanadu which front reasons. Yes which. I was like so baffled. This movie could even exist. I admired for that reason. This is just a legitimately good movie. I think yeah now. How'd you watched it before watching it for this episode. Yes funny story. I washed it a years ago on net flicks when it was. They're currently not their bummer. But the funny thing is after watching that movie. I went abacha anything. Lower lion rory referenced. Us moving on so. I google to see if it was in gilmore. Girls and i was correct. And was that since we've started this podcast or before being so it was like i like in the last two years i think so. I just remember not feeling great in line on the couch staying home all night and we watched that movie in menominee both really liked it Yeah yeah i really enjoyed it. Like i loved the narration and the style it was it was finally. I've been hating all the movies recently so glad to have a a winner. Yeah that voiceover reminds me alive. Chinatown that he'll if you guys remember we talked about china down awhile back and that was another good one. Yeah so this movie sunset boulevard. It takes place mostly on sunset boulevard. But hollywood in hollywood in general. And you hear you see the beginning. A dead man in swimming pool two shots in the back. One of the stomach a writer. Nobody and then suddenly a narrator starts takes you back six months prior and you meet a writer a nobody who looks just like the debt guide pool the ta. So you start this movie. No one where it's going. Yes now did i know. Did i recognize from the beginning that the main character in the movie was also the dead guy in the pool no admittedly. I didn't 'cause sometimes things just don't completely click. But after i think i just kind of wasn't trying to figure it out and then eventually i was like. Oh wait this. This is the guy in the pool and his face is a little distorted in the water to. So if you're not super familiar with the actor. William holden I could see how you would not recognize him. His i think the first time i watched it i went is up good. But he's a down out of his luck rider just trying to make a dumb can't catch a break. Banks of after tankers car because he owes lots of money three months rent yada yada but he doesn't keep it in the garage. It keeps it parked nearby lot. Owner doesn't ask any questions so he takes his car out for a drive but those guys happen to see him while he's out begging for work has he's not getting any work as a screenwriter and so they shoot after him blow out his tires. He pulls off the side of the road and pulls into an empty garage. What he thinks doesn't empty mansion but alas a man greets him outside a woman up the stairs and a dead monkey. She thinks he's there to bury her monkey in a casket.

"And grow and change. In your own way in your own life, And sometimes your relationship to these things also changes but to counter that sometimes there are things that you check in with, and they're absolutely fabulous. Like last night, I watched Sunset Boulevard, which is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I was like, Let's check in with Norma Desmond. See how she holds up. Hand and sure enough It's still incredible and it's still amazing. I love those sweet thanks for meeting on a happy note. Is there anything grand? Just if you want to put a bow on it was there anything that you've experienced? That made? You sort of re re evaluate what you originally thought about it. Well, I'm in the process of doing it right now. Lost is one of my favorite shows of all time. But I'm going back and watched the first season a couple times the first couple seasons, multiple times that I've never fully watched it twice. And I'm now into the middle of the Syriza again. And I'm finding all these inconsistent, not really inconsistencies. But just Kind of was not into the whole, like, Hey, let's they kept saying it's not purgatory. It's not purgatory, right? They kept telling you what? It wasn't what it wasn't and I just ignored because I liked it so much. And now that I go back and watch it, I'm like they completely Do the whole time. So lost is kind of sad because it's my favorite show but lost his getting there for me. All right, well, OK. When we come back, you guys work. Thanks, Bradley. No, I wanted, you know, I mean, it's something we've all experienced. And it Z, you know, even maybe just the experiencing that it isn't what you thought it was, is a valuable exercise. So for that, at least we can be thankful. Exactly. Here's something else we can be thankful for. There's a publication ship we need to catch you up on and that population ship which what's a publication ship, Holly? Population ship is a celebrity relationship. Leverage for publicity. This one involves rebel Wilson will tell you all about it when we return right here on my talk one of 71 another lorry and Julia moment you've been celebrating all.

"He is going to do what he takes it takes to make sure that Brian needs to see that he has the influence that he can do this that he has to do this for Ted because that's what matters to Emmett. He went up against the all-powerful, Brian. And he won we find out that. Todd's going to not go to jail, but he's gonna pay a penalty. Here. We see Melanie once again is a terrible lawyer. She did nothing at all. In this case. She just showed up in her pantsuit and bailed them out. That's it. She might as well just gone into the car ongoing law the law law. Don't we Joyce yet? I can slap you with a motherfucker of a fine. Also going to have to shut down the website forever. You do anything even remotely connected to porn again. Even buying a fucking naked greeting card. The D L slamming to the wall screen standing. Put your pants on. So I'm kind of curious how that penalty they can come into play. Like, can you really force somebody to close their business it? Yeah. It doesn't make sense unless it's a unless it's part of the deal because also they don't say anything about him having to go on like a sex offender registry or anything like that. But he has to plead guilty to these charges. Yeah. The charges were intriguing to a delinquency of a minor or something like that. So close your business pay a fine. Cea. Never comes back up again. And I do love it when they go to the basement because they're he's closing up. Shop is so sad. Watching Ted does until the whack shack. It was really sad. And I love I love that. They the Emmett rediscovers his turning bed that he had negotiated. Look. It's my revolving bid from when I was a big stuff. You still are it's the Dick's that got small. He's says the it was back when he was a big star in Ted's says oh, use your you are big star. It's the Dick's that got small marketing back to the classic line from Sunset Boulevard and Norma Desmond. Used to be in pictures used to be big. I am. Pictures that got small. And I thought this was also just a really beautiful tender moment between imminent, Ted. Where was so cute really super touching? Yes. I like really is one of the first times I really grasped onto what they mean to each other. I understood their bond, I understood their relationship, and it was it was really nice. Oh, God when heads the thing he's upset about most as they had to give up the house how he wanted to have that. Oh that one kinda got me. I loved this notion that Ted doesn't know what's next hemispheres rowing with it because his life isn't changing much Ted's life is like completely turned upside down. He has no idea what's coming next. So I I really liked the way that those two actors played out that scene. There was something else that we quickly glossed over as one Ted did his awkward. Thank you to Brian in the diner. Yes. Uh-huh. Brian ends up saying that he only did it to protect his client and Debbie. Threw him though. I'll never figure out why he does. You mean act like a total shit. It's obviously just see titties. This was a really nicely played seen. It was really short. It was really sweet. And I'll just came from glances at just the right time. That's how you know. It's a well edited in a well directed seen. So that's the end of the wax shack. No, more porn, and thus begins a much more interesting ark for Theodore Schmidt. And I always wanted to know what happened to his assistant. And he he went back to homeroom. Still queerest vote. So there were three runners in this episode. I'm going to talk about the easiest one I smell and he gets pregnant. Yep. Now, we'll talk about the second one..

"Dot com. So all episodes for season one in season two are up there, and then we're starting to talk about season three a little bit more. Yeah. During bring out, we did a short film in the fall, and that's in like the festival circuit right now, Hannah directed it and I wrote it amazing. That was a lot of fun because that was the first time we done a project together since like the spring before when we wrapping up like two long. Yeah. So now we're just we're brainstorming for season three and we're gonna see, see where that goes. I also have like a sketch idea that I really wanna flesh out came to test, and I went to rooftop cinema club last week and saw Sunset Boulevard. And we really wanna do like a some sort of parody of that, like a modern day. Sunset Boulevard? Yeah, familiar with the. I'm not. You're not. Okay. So the the premise is this guy is just moved to Hollywood to be a writer, and he's like trying to get his break, and then he's having trouble with money and all this stuff. And there's like these loan sharks kinda chasing him, and he pulls into this really grand mansion to find that it's owned by Norma Desmond, who is this like silent movie star, who's kind of become like a hermit. And he starts like living with and working for her and things get real weird. It's very suspenseful. There's very serious, like narration and voice over the whole time. And I just think it'd be so funny to make that a modern parody. Yeah. Like old like an actress. Our age had a web series. That was a big hit like two years ago, and she's still just like living in that every day. It was like, well, my web series. Beautiful. I was gorgeous. Yeah, so we're playing.
