The homie Booth Got Aka both GAC AKA botch got has announced transferred from Utah to Minnesota so when I own college basketball legend is headed to the twin cities norlander, your instant, reaction and analysis, please. Of course that is the Minnesota fight, Song. You are hearing. Fade down start this podcast for those soups Twang are wondering. Wait a second. You double, maybe triple. Check your phone. That's right. I on College Basketball Podcast, sometimes leaky black. You know what you can take ownership leaky black I. Want Dibs on booth, gotch, going to Minnesota finally happening I. GotTa Tell Ya. We get this news on a Monday. GPA set in the over under on Richard, Patino, ten year contract extension and thirty six and a half hours for signing booth. What do you got the over the under there? I think in different times. Perhaps I would go. Under, but we are now living in terrible economic reality and I think ten year contract extension Dr Probably thing of the past at least temporarily. Don't underestimate the power influence and dynamism of booth, gotch returning home to Minnesota. He four seven sports. I picked Minnesota because it was the best fit for me. Overall playing in the home state, being with my family during these difficult times and playing with the talented group, coming in Gotcha is going to most likely. Sit Out for next season. He will apply for a waiver. listen. It's booth Gotcha. Anything's possible and I'd love nothing more than to talk with. With you on this podcast sometime later this year and dedicated an entire episode to Gotcha getting immediately eligible, but I don't know if he can pull that ultimately, they'll goodwin here. I mean Minnesota Beats. Out Clayton Iowa State Maryland Auburn for Gotcha Services. He played the past two seasons at Utah, coming off a season where he averaged ten point, seven point, three point, six rebounds, and two point nine assists most notably rose to fame when you and I both failed in about seven different pronunciations unexpectedly as he came up during a December episode of the eye on college basketball podcast, but he has become. Quite beloved in a short period of time legitimately can be a really good player for Minnesota. This is the third transfer. For Richard Pitino in this offseason. They also got western Michigan Transfer. Who will be immediately eligible brandon, Johnson, and then there's A. There's a good freshman guard coming in David Mustaf, who should who's from Turkey who should be pretty good as well? Jamal Mashburn Junior is going to head into the program so I'll tell you this. I mean Daniel to route to me. When he wore Minnesota uniform last season was one of the fifteen best players in college basketball. Booth, gotch can be one of the ten best players in college basketball in Minnesota uniform. You're from now if he so chooses teams also GonNa Bring Back Marks. Car GABE CAL sheer hope I'm getting that right and Trey Williams. Minnesota needs to be better. I think it will be better I don't know if it's GonNa. Be a year from now or two but I had I listen and full transparency. I insisted we do this podcast here. Okay, because it's booth, gotch. Biggest news of the week as far as I'm concerned in college basketball I. Don't see how we top this little question I have for you perish. Is I know Minnesota wasn't in your top twenty, five and one I assume version. What nineteen point I was going to be coming out on Tuesday. I must say what Minnesota from unranked to seventeenth eighteenth. Are you going to hold off even though Gosh might not? Not Be eligible I'm just wondering if there's influence on this roster scout team, and all that stuff might be enough for you to put Richard Patino team into the rankings. Here's what I would say. I I understand your skepticism about booth garage getting a waiver to play immediately at Minnesota, but I would say if Johnny. Jusin got one transferring back home to UCLA. Why wouldn the Homie Gawk get? One, at Minnesota. That's a very valid point. I consider that goofing around When I would, I reached out to people connected to the juicing situation as Joe First, congrats, secondly, how'd you get done so quickly? It wasn't just that choosing got waiver. It was like you got a waiver in like early. June or late, May, I mean it was a really sometimes. He's players waiting for waivers like the seats and started. Started and like they're still I'd nerd anything and to get one done that early. How you get a dog. And what I was told was it's was the easiest waiver request ever. You've got a young man on the other side of the country, wanting to move home to be close to his family during a pandemic. How was it ended up going to deny that one? It's like okay and if you apply that same. Logic to booth Gotcha. SCITUATE I would I would actually assume that he will get a waiver play immediately and to answer your question at that point I got bad news for I you. Look, there's a new favorite. There's a new paper to the big ten. GOPHERS. got.

"norlander" Discussed on CBS Sports Eye On College Basketball Podcast

"If the League is not gonNA instantly give it away. Tell me the league. I don't think the legal instantly giveaway. Acc only a handful of it. I mean he's got does he has to from Florida state going in the first round. Yes he does. Trent forest no forest going in the first round really know Jeez That's it okay. So it will be forced. It would be the cell and he's in that Williams. Okay Patrick. He's not an empty walker in the first round. Okay how about that? So this is a point I've made I was on radio and San Diego recently. Another market with a similar team recently and the point I made is because even on in San Diego and they were like but really win a national championship like listen. Nobody loves the AZTECS. More than we loved the Aztecs but win a national title. And I'm like the reason you don't think winning a national title is realistic is because typically there are these monsters out there that you're gonNA run into and they got all these. Nba Players We. Oh we're just going to overwhelm those teams simply do not exist. There are only three likely incidentally tournament team right now with multiple first round picks on them according to Sam. And it's it's it's Duke. Which do we find out as the most talented team in the country? But it's Duke. It is a a whatever Arizona team and Florida state. That's it who run into this monster to circle back. I think that's why I think it's one of the reasons. There's this perception that there aren't great teams because we don't look out there and see something like duke last season with Zairean. Rj Cam in trae Jones. Duke last season had at least four probable future first round draft picks and right now only one likely instantly. Tournament team has more than two okay. There was a good evaluation done by Jason Lists who used to read the bigly evolves for team rankings now team rankings DOT com. Really really smart writer and he took a look at if there was actually parody in college basketball this season compared to the last seven seasons and the data really speaks for itself there but for the most part the answer is this isn't It's not a dramatic step back. So I I worry that we're GONNA get to March and this is going to continue and it just simply might not be the case because Baylor doesn't have a surefire first round pick on its roster and because San Diego State is now coming from a League. That's going to struggle to put two teams into the tournament for sure it's going to have skeptics. I kind of reject that stuff. I think these teams can be great teams and when we get to March tenth and March Fifteenth and March Twentieth. I think that we might see that. We do have a couple teams that have separated themselves. I don't think we're while the tournament could be chaotic and I'd love it. Welcome it as we said last week the week before. Give me tournament with San Diego State Dayton and Gonzaga on one line like I will take that every time to me that's awesome that's different and Given how these teams continue to win even Auburn which is like thirty camp or something like that. It's one three straight overtime games. Four if it's passed five or in overtime it's ranked number one in luck right now because it keeps winning by these such low margins games. Keep Breaking Auburn's way so I don't know Auburn Really. Isn't that good or if it has developed this ability to close out in the clutch and that goes back to even last season and had that memorable first round game against New Mexico state when it could have lost okay easily but credited. Bruce Pearlstine man. They just keep winning. So I'll be. I'll be interested to see if we do get that true separation with the ones and maybe a couple of twos versus arrest because I think we are headed toward that right now and you know maybe maybe we're starting a dialogue perish but I do think that the teams at the top of the sport needed to be given a little more credit for how good they are and how great they could potentially become. Well the reason this season among the reasons the season got the reputation of I. Nobody's good is because we did go through a stretch where the top five teams were. Just losing all of the time. It's not happening anymore. Like like I told you. The top eight teams in my rankings and yours are on a combined. One hundred five game winning streak and I wouldn't look this up earlier so the top eight teams in our rankings. Right now are one seventy five and sixteen on the season. This is week fifteen of of the people if you go look at week. Fifteen of the people last season the top eight where combined one seventy and fifteen. So it's like it's basically the same thing exactly and yeah basically the same thing the only place where you find. A discrepancy is the best adjusted efficiency margin right now belongs to Kansas at plus thirty point seven. Six last season belonged to Virginia at the end of the season at plus thirty four point two two. So that's a significant margin a better and plus thirty point seven six would only rank fourth but we have twenty five percent. More game. Inventories are too so you know. Let's I will. We can have that conversation acknowledges if we get to the final four and there's a team there's only one team plus thirty. I don't think that's GonNa be the case personally. Yeah if you because like teams are going to get hot in the tournament. Somebody's gotta get hot and go to the final somebody. We gotta have four teams in the final four which means we gotta have fourteen. Also we're going to have sixty eighteen hitting the bracket Brits Dover Always Make Fun of me because when we're on set we'll be T- he'll be talking about some we'll be it'll be a bubble team discussion and I'll say listen. The thing you got to realize is that we got to put sixty eight teams of people know that it not a lot of people will realize that got put sixty eight. They don't call me an insider for nothing you gotta put sixty eight teams in the bracket similarly you gotTa have four teams in the final four and four teams are going to win at least four. Games in the incidentally tournaments before they take a law so I would assume that that enhances the numbers but either way you took plus thirty point. Seven six right. Now it's the best in the country at this moment. It would be fourth if you slotted into last season's final adjusted efficiency margins behind Virginia Gonzaga and Michigan State for whatever it's worth the four number one seeds last season. We're Duke Virginia. North Carolina and Gonzaga. Duke was twenty two and two on Valentine's Day. Virginia was twenty one and two on Valentine's Day. Gonzaga was twenty three two on Valentine's Day and North Carolina was nineteen and five on Valentine's Day. The top four teams right now according to you and I and the selection committee over the weekend when they ceded the number one seeds Gonzaga Twenty five and one Baylor twenty two and one San Diego State Kansas. Twenty one and three from a record perspective it matches up pretty well yeah it does good stats there and something to keep in mind when you watch the hoops this weekend when you hear people talk about it and as we get into March where there's a lot of the kind of narrows in on all right. What teams are going to seeds? And what teams are in on or just off the bubble if Gonzaga doesn't enter the incidentally tournament on a twenty five game winning streak. It's likely going to be because. Byu I WANNA talk about that next because the cougars are sneaky. Good but I check.

Speculations increases that Cole Anthony might not play again in college

"So there's growing speculation that Kohl Anthony will not play at North Carolina again. Norrland not sure if you saw it. But here's what our friend and former colleague Sabatini wrote for the athletic earlier this week about Injured lottery picks is co Anthony. lamelo ball in Hampton after spending time in Las Vegas around dozens of NBA people sambo quote the feeling among NBA evaluators. Waiters is that injured guards. Coal Anthony Lamelo ball and RJ. Hampton aren't going to play the rest of the season. It's worth stressing that no final decisions have been made by those players. I and thus it's possible. They will still play scouts and executive. Don't know that Anthony won't suit up again for North Carolina or that Bala Hampton won't play again in the NBA. I'll rather it's. They're working expectation that they're not going to get to see them again. Given their contextual situations the using logic because North Carolina's team around Anthony has struggled with no uh-huh floor spacing and a cluttered lane around him every time he drives into the pain. NBA executives believe that does around. Anthony will stress to him that it's not worth returning that will be especially true if North Carolina loses a lot of games in his absence against a week schedule and this takes itself out of the tournament. Picture norlander do you. I think we've seen coal anthony for the final time in North Carolina uniform. I'll be direct and I'll say no but I had this thought think I expressed only previous podcast if UNC goes on to have significant issues in the ACC and can't even keep its head above water. Call Anthony Projects even with this injury. I won't say universally but a top five pick is completely mm within reality if he does not play again and it would not stunned me. It'd be it'd be a major development element in that you would have in the same season for what I have to believe. Is the first time ever in college. Basketball Ascot Ball to top five level picks in college for eligibility injury. Whatever opting to bail on their college careers to not return and pursue a pro opportunity trinity? which is the which is the? It's like the college bowl. College players sitting out the Bulls taken to to the sixth degree. Basically where it's one thing where if you've been a junior senior in college football you're playing some forgettable bowl on December twenty ninth ninth New Year's Eve or whatever and you're just like I'm Gonna I'm GonNa pack it in here. I'M NOT GONNA chance injury if I think I'm going to be first second or third round pick. It's completely understandable. Aw I would endorse any player that wants to do that. Frankly it's a whole nother level if you are a coal Anthony Type James Wiseman type and you you decide. I'm just GONNA shut it down altogether and simply not returned to competition and GonNa take the stock where I have it right now and hope that my April and May workouts are going to Either steady me or boost me to to a certain spot in the draft so I won't be stunned if it happens. I'm going to say that will not happen. Only because because he's a truly like fierce competitor. I think that he will be better. He'll we'll be back in time to still want to give it a go out that this is GonNa sit well with him having his career kind of sputter out the way that it has. So Oh he's he's nine games deep into a career. I think he'll be back. He'll be playing for Carolina this season and long-term projection is this and we can do a offer. Type flashback if we need to but I'll say that he'll return and one of the most compelling storylines in college basketball when he does return will be if he can be healthy enough and good enough to get an UNC into the tournament. I would lean that way as well. I do think there's two things that would make him less likely to to return or unlikely to return one would be if you just not healthy enough. And if he's not healthy enough. You shouldn't return. That's like you know like this. and He is worth millions of dollars and playing playing at anything. Less than one hundred percent would be foolish. So if he's not healthy enough to return then he won't return shouldn't return anybody trying to criticize him for that would be It'd be misguided criticism the other thing that I think could play a role as you mentioned ballgames for football players. Will you know they don't these football players. They don't sit the College Football playoff. They sit out the cotton bowl and they sit out the Birmingham Bowl and they sit out the liberty bowl but they don't sit out the the games that actually mean something something and so if you want to you know. Make perhaps apples to oranges comparison but still something similar still fruit to fruit I. If coin returns in North Carolina has just lost so much before. He's able to come back that he would be coming back not to try to get North Carolina to the tournament the try to get them to the nit like we're just crystal clear you're not. You're not taking this team to the tournament. At that point. You could go if I'm not playing playing for any. I'm not playing for a trip to the tournament. What am I playing for? Like if you're in Alabama running back and you're playing for a trip to the account coll- to the national championship game. That's worth playing for even if you're a top ten pick if you're just gonNa go to the fiesta. A A different bowl. Anything outside of the College Football playoff. Perhaps that's not worth playing for. I think coli Anthony's approach could be similar if if I can come if if this team is holds it together well enough that I can come back and we can beat Duke twice beat Louisville and go to the tournament. That's worth playing for but but coming back to just play out a schedule that's leading the nowhere because the image to the resume was so significant in my absence that we can't get to the tournament then. I think you could reasonably argue. It's time it's time to just clock out. That's why I think his situation is vastly different than James Wiseman situation. I mean if coal as that he comes back to take North Carolina to the IT. He's just a great talent who played at North Carolina. Like who cares but why has been in theory was set to rejoin the top ten team. And you know if you take memphis to a final four. You're a legend forever in Memphis emphasis. You know they don't have the history of North Carolina or Duke or Kentucky. You any Memphis Fan can can tell you that the starters from all three three final four teams. There's never been a national champion. So you got a chance to go do that. And what is a wide open year to walk away from that I still think is just just just odd and I don't think that he would be walking away from that. So it's why I guess I bought them on it this way. I would understand if North Carolina goes three and five in its next eight games and Co Anthony's cleared to return and he says but you know the numbers are so bad at this point. We're not GONNA be able to get to the incidentally tournament. I'm just going to focus on my pro career. I would understand that a lot a lot a lot more easily than then I can understand James Wiseman walking away when he walked away I would to. UNC seven and five and next four games are at home. The road is after that or pit in Virginia tech I understand. UNC's serious down swell here but I do think that it will be instantly good enough spot. Where provided there there are no further setbacks and you know it's an it's an MC L. It's it's not insignificant by any means? Let's he's gotta get fully healthy here. They're not gonNA put them back on the floor until he is one hundred percent you know. Make the parallel almost to design Williamson. Obviously obviously Except signed Williamson is now being handsomely. Paid and company is not yet I do think the Carolina I'm Projecting Carolina will be still within reach of the tournament by the time he was able to come back. And so that's what will make Make that happen. But we'll wait and see obviously get investments on that story will continue to update up to you talk about it and see where we go from there.

Ohio State men's basketball team defeats Penn State 106-74

"Start about discussing Ohio state because the Buckeyes beat the absolute crap out of another quality opponent this weekend. Final Score Ohio state one. Oh six pin state seventy four. So that's a thirty. Two point win over a Penn State team that entered the game ranked twenty third at Kim. Palm the lines are now twenty six which means as of this moment Ohio state has three wins by at least twenty points over top fifty Kim pom teams and according to Hoop Visions Jordan sperber the rest of the country like the other three hundred and fifty two division one teams combined only have three wins by at least twenty points over top fifty Kim pom teams which means Ohio state has already done something three times that the entire rest of the country has only also done three times just incredible so Ohio state is now number five offensive offensive efficiency number two defensive efficiency number one it can palm number two it's Sagara number two in the CBS sports top twenty five and one norlander. Yeah I think you and I both knew it would be good because they returned some key pieces in Chris. Holtman is excellent. Did you think they'd be this good. They are killing people and now again again number. One Akin no not even close to not even close. Maybe that's a little too thick but Yeah Jordan Stat. I re tweeted. We did that on Saturday. That's that's a really really good one And in light of what the Buckeyes were able to do. Just wipe the floor with Penn State thoroughly and I you know that was a secondary TV game. But I did have it on. And then it was extremely impressive and Caleb Western has been the star of the team to this point in the season but you know as we mentioned on the On the Friday podcast they do have more than just him and digit carton is really coming. He's coming into his own I I like so much of what he's been able to do. So yeah I mean this is the best when I said that it was the best team in the big ten. And you said are you gonNA pretend like mark turgeon doesn't exist. You remember when that happened. I vaguely remember that. Yes and then remember how Maryland should've lost at home to Illinois and really had. We're not going to dedicate anytime on this podcast. That game because it was hideous Maryland had no business beating Illinois. Did you happen to catch any of that game. By the way they were down. Big Big big and I was stressed out because have a real impact on the twenty one but then a Anthony Cowan got going down. The stretch in Maryland escapes win is a win is a win win is a win and I am. I am driving the Cowan bus as you. Well know and on that note I was happy to see it but but Maryland Illinois will get their due in time to come but yeah that just reinforced my belief that right now Ohio state is clearly The best as team in the big ten and according to some metrics operating as the best team in college basketball right

"Thank you. And the number chasing, fifteen under par by Henrik norlander. Randy ball, has been with him all day. Randy. Yeah. Guys, we are through the hundred ninety seven yard number twelve. The breeze is definitely picking up that that whole playing dead down wind today. Not only is it northwest. It's almost more westerly wind as well. So that played down wind that did cause Brian, bigly, I believe to go just a little bit long. It was over the green. He did manage to get up and down to save his par and stay at fourteen under. We had another ten twelve foot up the hill. Maybe closer to fifteen for our leader. Henrik norlander birdie putt. He left that dead short. Good foot Nash or the whole and then tap that in for his part to stay at fifteen under Sebastian Kaplan. Hit a very nice tee shot just beyond the whole just a little horseshoe on it lift that put out, really. I was walking it in. I kinda think he thought he made it but did not was able to tap in. In to get to this sorry to stay at thirteen under they haven't made their way to thirteen T, which is listed as a four hundred thirty seven yard par four, but it is dead into a new wind. So it's hard to feel it. If you're anywhere protecting the trees. But right out here in the open. You can feel that it's certainly into the win. All three players have missed the fairway right? All three are going to have issues with the same tree. I can put a blanket over them, but they are none of.

"It is a big night for those folks. Matt norlander is my guest Matt good. Have you back? How are you? them it's great to be back in before we start talking i just got a mentioned something real quick off the top it was about eleven twelve years ago when i was working in a humble weekly newspaper office and i kill time during the afternoon working in connecticut i listened to the jim rome radio stream and it was then it was then that i i heard a smack off and so i've been a listener ever since i know we're on the eve of a massive event here so good luck tomorrow can't wait to listen to get it on the podcast there and is jeff richmond going to be a part of this because if he is i mean my money's on him i hope that he gets involved somehow that's that's like a top caller in the show history so do we know the status of jeff in richmond mamane you know for a fact how much i like you how much i respect you how proud i am a you for coming up the way you have what have you heard a smack off since those eleven years ago no kidding yeah he's in he's in but he was in last year and he called in didn't get on the air so i'm not sure as a smack off champ he is invited but he is not I'm calling lately, man. I'm not sure what to expect. And those would say is going to call he's going to make the same call that he made twenty years ago when he won. That's fine. If it's not him, then I want the legendary guy from Boston who talked about Andy Pettitte, nostrils, like we've got to track down that guy 'cause that's like, I cracked up. You're so right. Man. You I so appreciate the thoughts. I'm glad you found that you'll back then tomorrow is the big day in really appreciate you saying, thanks so much, or so big night for you. There's no doubt that time Williamson is going to be the first pick tonight. Matt, just how high is ceiling. In other words, we talking about an all star in all NBA player. And if so how quickly. Yeah. He's got a really high ceiling if we want to be realistic about this as possible. His feeling I think is top twenty player in NBA history. We're talking feeling. Not not. Absolutely. What they'll be? But if you felt what he didn't college, and if you combine his marketability, the megawatts mile, the talent the fact that we haven't had much buzz around the player heading into a draft since LeBron James, and before LeBron James who was, like, we've had maybe five players ever. If you can tap into the all that avoid injuries are concerned about, you know, his body type the way he plays if he prone four years from now to have his eases go on him to blow on him. No one wants to see that. But he's just so heavy, and so he has no comparison like, Shawn Kemp might be the closest thing. And even he's not that kind of close overall so tonight it's going to be all about vying, Williamson as it should be. But I think the draft will be known for that for the top three for him and John Moran and RJ Barrett. And then I think you're gonna see a slew of trades. Gonna it'll be interesting for NBA fans because don's the big story. What does he say you know what do we go through with here? What New Orleans but New Orleans has that fourth pick him. Did they trade it out of it or were they good with Lonzo ball and might they take your Culver hunter, there's a lot of fascinating things there because it'll be about die on, and then what you put around him because now he becomes obviously one of the biggest stars in the NBA, because he was he I would argue that he was the biggest story in basketball for the past eight months. How often how often does that ever the case where a college basketball player is the biggest thing in all about all levels of basketball season? Dying applied there and stuff into the league will be one of the biggest things for decade running problems point, Matt, norlander joining us, he's part of CBS sports HQ's live draft coverage. And again, that gets away at ten P PM eastern. Mount. You mentioned John Morand. Let me ask you about that. Because the expectation is, of course he'll go. Number two. You have been all over him for quite some time before we talk about his game at the next level Zion was a guy who had. Amazing hype for years any lived up to it. Maranto nearly went undiscovered. How do you explain that? What happened? Well, it's kind of an explicable and down with Josh that parents and family about that and his story, so well told at this point, if anyone happens to think that that's not millionaire with it. I mean he was not. He was not highly recruited. He went to a tuna you tournament, and they separated kids at the start of it and said, okay, we think you're good enough. You're going to be in the main gym all your other guys. I don't over there, the other gym, or no one's gonna be paying any attention, and it was then assistant at Murray state who just because he wanted MAC. He was hungry he stopped in and he's drama rent dominating three on three drills. And thanks. This kid might actually be something. It's fascinating to me how he has made this job, because I talked to Murray, say, coach Matt McMahon at the end of drama rants freshman year and I said, listen, if they're possibilities, their potential that, you know, if he was really good at off more. He might be able to, to leave after two years Murray state put in point guard, you know, campaign, I think Hanan and now you got drama rent, the, the program is actually established itself is sort of a mid major point guard do. And he told me he had met, we have got significant interest already from NBA teams right now. And up the time this is off the record. But here we are now he said, listen, John rent is ninety nine percent leaving for the day after a software, and if he wants to being a lottery pick on telling you, it will not be shocked whatsoever credit Matt McMahon. Mary because before he blow up as a sophomore well before that he thought that he had a legit lottery talent on offense. And as we turn out. See become a top player and a rare case of a mid major point guard going top three then MBA draft. We almost never see that guy's amazing. Like we're rolling beat role CBS sports network. And I'm listening to you and I'm watching the video. Just absolutely amazing. How explosive this guy is how unique he is. And then the wisdom has been that New York, we'll take RJ Barrett. Number three, there have been some questions about his game recently, especially when it comes to being compared to Zaire on in your opinion. How fair is that and those questions not fair at all. And in fact, if you hear any sort of talk about how RJ Barrett was overshadowed at two. Overlooked undervalued. It's if the crock it's not true whatsoever. RJ Barrett set the ACC freshman scoring record nuts. Do cress from scoring record the ACC freshman, scoring record Don Williamson. It's all of those games in February going into March with RJ Barrett leading the team maintain that number one seat seats. In fact, the number one overall seed was fantastic score. Remember, a year ago had we've been talking on on draft day and said, okay. Look forward to twenty nineteen did Barrett was in near consensus forecast, number one pick the fact that he drops the three is no big indictment on him or his game whatsoever. I think he's ready and tailor-made score at the level immediately. And I don't think there are any sure things in this draft. And I would define a short thing as multiple future all star even Zeile Willie Williamson if I don't, I don't necessarily think you Bank that, if you had to bet your life on it, I wouldn't bet that, but I think there is the second guy Belo's I on that I think is most likely to be a multiple time all started because he's crap. Eighty south walking can get into the lane well-suited well from deep, and I think that he is going to walk into a situation New York, where he will be set up to thrive and it'll be sitting, and he is. I know he is ready. I think that you will see when we look up first second week of November, Jim, we're gonna notice immediately RJ Barrett making impact on the game for his team similar to what Luca dodgers did for Dallas, Matt norlander joins me for another moment. Or so we know he's ready. In fact, we know the first three already but the thinking spin that this is in effect a three player draft. How accurate is that assessment? I think this is my least favorite talking point of the calendar year so far. Okay because it's never only a two player three player four player draft. It's that's because the only reason why this has come up is because it has been a consensus worth Diane than jaw than RJ. You almost never get that going into draft where it's weeks ahead of time months ahead of time. The one the two of the three in order are. And so, because of that, at the lazy talking point that we fall back on guarantee a guarantee, you look, up to three years from now there's going to be two or three second round from this draft is going to be four or five guys pick between ten and thirty in the strap that are going to be starting level NBA players. The trick obviously is identifying and not just that, but I think the one thing about the draft that does not ever get talked about enough, what NBA general managers and talent evaluate what they're trying to do with these guys can all play basketball. Can you do not get to the level where you're twenty draft pick and you're going to be a bus? No, it's about alchemy about who you are the person the skill set. You have the exact situation you go through the city that you moved. There are all of these elements that have to click in order for you. To be successful NBA player because they're only so many roster spots are only been affecting place, just because some guy got might get picked eighteen and wind up having ten times the career, some guy that goes eight it doesn't mean necessarily that the guy that was eight was doomed to fail. He just wound up going to the raw situation. So I'm always fascinated to see which players get picked to which franchises and are they allowed to develop, you know, I've had a couple of coaches specifically talk to me about how they hope there guys go to certain franchises over others because with an NBA circles and within college basketball circles certain franchises have better reputations in some areas and other specifically pertains to Claire development. So keep an eye on that as well. I sometimes think we just completely dismiss these guys and reputations in the Smith. How good they work coming into the draft. When in reality, it's very much about the situation. They walk into hell coaching staff sets them up for success, my CBS calling Matt norlander joining us right now about one last thing bowl bowl is one of the more polarizing players in the draft. You have him going to Boston. And number twenty two some made the case if you were healthy all season long, he would have been one of the first guys off the board. How do you balance his potential with the concerns about his health? That's the great balance there. And I've got him going to Boston because Boston have three picks I think if they guarantee they trade, at least one of those six, and if they don't trade it with Volvo wind up wrapping him. He's the kind of gamble that they can take but math and concerns on the defensive end concerned about health overall concerns about how much he really wants to play the game loves to play the game. Obviously, most people listen to remember how interesting has father was..

"I was so thrilled to join and be a team that if my job had entailed standing on the sideline and picking up the scrunched up Gatorade cuts. I would have been thrilled or so if you were talking to a young Amy Trask right now or you were talking to somebody who just starting out right now. You were talking to somebody who's making a big change right now. What would your advice be? Well, I would give three pieces of advice to someone starting out if the question came from a young woman, which often they do my first piece of advice would be gender-specific, when I'm asked, what should a young woman due to advance in her career point one stop thinking about the fact that you're a woman if you don't want others thinking about your gender? It makes no sense to think about your gender. If you wanna go into a business setting and have gender, not be an issue. Don't make it an issue. So point one is gender specific. Stop thinking about your gender to is gender neutral work hard, hard work matters. It really, really matters. And when you think you can't work any harder. Find a way to work harder, Jim. I know you've done that your whole career. I can't tell you the number of times sitting in my office, people walk in and say, you know, how do we get a job like yours. And I say, well, you know, this when you get here in the morning, Mike. Cars already here. And do you notice when you leave at night? My car is still here, hard work matters. And the third piece of advice goes right to the heart of what you asked tonight, own self be true. My biggest moments in my view have come when I've been true to myself, and my biggest failures, and stumbles and fumbles have been when I tried to be something or someone I'm not. Amy Trask NFL analyst for CBS sports spent nearly thirty years as executive with the Oakland Raiders shairman of the board of the big three league, author of you to go. We are both at the idea center downtown, Minneapolis, Norrland, refresh my memory is this the first ever in person college basketball podcast. I feel like we've done one of these before in a hotel room. You were extremely uncomfortable. You look more comfortable right now than normal feel comfortable. "Welcome back to the island. College basketball podcast when we sometimes discuss Campbell fighting leaks. Black Matt norlander is here with me. I want to open up big twelve because an interesting past two days in the big twelve on Monday night, Baylor went to Oklahoma and one by thirty by thirty to extend its winning streak to five games. Scott clues bears now five into the league tie with Kansas state and only Kansas state atop the big twelve standings. That's because Kansas law seventy three sixty three Tuesday night at Texas. So the jayhawker now sixteen and five overall five and three in the big twelve. But even more concerning is KU is now just four and four since you as a bookie suffered a season ending hand injury. And they're just one in five in road games on the season. So let's start here. Norlander? You have consistently said you will not pick anybody other than canes in the big twelve until K you string of at least share of fourteenth straight big twelve titles as broken, but right now Keynes's tied for third the big twelve standings, the jayhawks trending in the wrong. Direction and Kim Tom currently projects Iowa State to win the league outright and snap. K you streak question. Are you ready to abandon Bill self? Are you ready to say Kay you streak of big twelve titles? It's coming to an end question. Where's your Iowa State picked in the league? Answer. I'd have given possibly remember something answer. I know it was six I had him second-half doing good morning. I can't believe it's been three days as we had a podcast this week is flying by I will not abandon my band in my post. I'm still going to stick with this. I am still let me I think this is the language I've used in the past, but I will make it crystal clear as we start this Wednesday podcast. I will not pick Kansas to not finish atop the league standings in the big twelve until it doesn't. There have been a couple of instances over the past fourteen years where they finished atop the leaks endings and actually shared a regular season title with a couple of other teams. I think that outcome is actually now most likely I'm not gonna give up on this this not gonna Bandon it. And as as you're mentioning this. I was thinking about it yesterday. Because I knew he talked about this earlier in the season. I I refused to abandon Villanova. And then I feel like you kind of talk me into abandoning Villanova. And now, look what's happening. So the same thing is applying here, I know in the aftermath of losing a road game, Texas. It's feeling like it's never been this much jeopardy for Kansas. Maybe that's true. But I got to see it to believe it. And I also think big twelve big picture wise, I'll get to Baylor in a second. But on throwback to you first big, picture wise. The big twelve I don't think the winner is going to get out of this without at least five losses at least five right now Baylor in K state have to Texas Tech which is balancing back. Nicely has three Kansas three in Iowa State has three I would say, it's even relatively possible. Maybe not likely, but if we if we look up we see three teams wind up finishing with five losses atop the standings. And if that indeed this happen, I think you're going to have some people out there that are going to refute the Kansas fifteenth street years, but the record really is consecutive years finishing atop the league standings in the regular season tie or no tie. I won't give up yet. And. With Kansas if you can take now it's easier said than done in Texas was able to do this to a certain degree. Thanks in part to Jackson Hayes who is a raw talent. But if he wants to leave after one season, he will leave and he will be first run traffic guy like him on the floor, certainly had an impact. And you can't get anything else consistent there. They didn't even start legit Vic last night. Oh, Ty Balji started. And he was actually he was he was fairly decent. But there's not they're not getting enough around him. They're just not getting enough help overall. And so how I wonder playfully wondering yet. I know there will be some heavy cynics out there will Silvio Susa be ruled eligible or not in the coming days here set Davis, our colleague at CBS,.

"But I think the same question posed and and Michigan state's subject, I think the answer is also yes, they were down bad on the road in a league game against a good team that can happen to almost anybody in the country. I'm not worried about Michigan state at all. Let's move on. So Tennessee has the longest winning streak right now. The vol's of one fourteen straight games, they beat West Virginia on Saturday. In Thompson, Boling they were down big early. And it was like is the number one team in the country on upset alert. And then they just ran away from West Virginia they handled on the way they were supposed to handle them six. No in the SEC right now trivia time norlander who has the second longest winning streak right now. Okay. It's so it's not LSU. It is LSU. He put that on t for me. I thought you were trying to reverse do, Jim. Yeah. They okay. So there you credit to them. And by the way, LSU getting away with a win at Missouri. Not they shouldn't have won the game. And then they pulled away in overtime that was a credit to them. But I thought Elsie was like the overly obvious answer. You might have been somewhere else. But yes, anyway, the reason I think it's an obvious answer to you. Because we do this every day. I wonder how many people listening actually knew the answer to that. Because LSU has been operating a little bit of the national radar. They were preseason top twenty five, but then they go down to Orlando to the advocate invitational. And they took a pair losses down there that just just weren't good. The first one was to to Florida state in OT nothing really wrong with that. But Florida state has I believe dropped out of the top twenty five at this point. Florida state has lost a bunch lately has lost three the last four heading into Sunday's game. Against a Miami. And so LSU lose that one. And then the real stinker was the next with two days later on Sunday, November twenty fifth they lose ninety seventy seven to an Oklahoma state team that is currently nine and eleven overall two and five in the big twelve and even though it was ninety eight seventy seven like the score was closer than the game. Oklahoma state just pounded them. So they get dropped out of the rankings. And they dropped all the way down to fifty. I at Kim palm. But they're playing well now they've won nine in a row, they're sixteen and three overall six in the SEC, and they don't have a signature win yet unless you count the win at ole miss immediately after omiss got ranked in the people, but like ole miss shown itself to not be top twenty five team since then I I'm comfortable predicting they'll drop out of the people on Monday and LSU hasn't yet. Played Tennessee Kentucky Mississippi. Date. But this team has gone from fifty first at Ken palm on December ninth to twenty fourth at can palm right now. They're number thirteen in the net. Let me ask you this. Do you put LSU in the top tier the SEC with Tennessee and Kentucky. Yes, I do. I think the team is is exceptional on defense. In fact, second in the country among power offers teams in steals per game trivia, who's number one among all power conference teams in steals per game. Perish in steals per game. Number one power conference team. I have no idea. I don't want to answer and say something stupid. So I'll just let you answer. All right by not answering. It's just a stupid. If you guessed. So I will give you the answer. It's Duke ten point five LSU is nine point nine per game. They excel in that area also thirteenth in the net rankings. They have in trending well in the instabilities official metric overall, listen.

"To the eye on college basketball podcast. Matt norlander issue with him once again and nothing happened. Since last time, we talked said this Windies podcast. It was true. Then I'm saying again on this podcast. It's true again. Now bottom line this is by far the worst week of the college basketball season. The only ranked team that's played a game. So far this week is Houston and that was last Sunday against Coppin states. Whatever Christmas is great for the kids. Great in general. I enjoyed the day with my family, but putting Christmas on a Tuesday really does screw up an entire week of college basketball evidence being that this is the only week of the entire season in which one ranked team will not play another ranked team Norrland or how border you at this week. You know, what I embrace it because I've gotten to it's boring. There's no doubt about it. But I know we're turning into a pretty active January here, and that'll be awesome. But I've had a chance to catch up with. With a lot of albums do a little bit of reading. And so I welcome the reprieve while even squeezing in three week college basketball podcast to the listeners who frankly, I I don't want to be too presumptive here. But I hope we are. We are filling your week up with with some college hoops content that you're craving amid a lot of non stuff happening on the court. So I've actually I've enjoyed the fact that there hasn't been so much hoops action. And I'm excited to chat about the interesting games. We've got coming this weekend. And yes in a little bit the much awaited highly anticipated at least only on my end year in review is coming on this podcast. It is true. That this is where you can catch up like I've done multiple expense reports. I've thrilling. Yeah. I cleaned out. The garage you do because I'm home, and there aren't any real relevant games happening. You do have time to actually like act like a normal person. So I guess that's the good side. But I am ready to give back the relevant college. Football games, and we will do. So how about this for transition Saturday at two pm eastern. The biggest game this week is number sixteen Kentucky against Louisville inside the center downtown Louisville Kentucky enters the nine and two record. Thanks to that big win over North Carolina in last week in CBS sports classic at the United Center Norrland, and I were both there. UK's two losses. So far this season. The thirty four point loss to Duke and the overtime lost Seton Hall and this game against Louisville. It will be a Kentucky's first true road game of the season. Meantime, Louisville nine and three overall eight no inside the Senate cards of beat. Michigan state. Also beat the same Seton Hall team that beat Kentucky Lula's losses on Tennessee on a neutral Marquette on a neutral at Indiana. So nothing bad on the resume Louisville's unranked now. But if the cardinals beat Kentucky, I'm certain they'll be top twenty five and one come Sunday morning. Like, I said tip is at two pm eastern on Saturday norlander, it's not the same as Calipari Patino Kentucky little game. But it's still pretty good. Right. Gaddis is pretty good..

"Hey, there I'm Kerry Wednesday, October third, two thousand eighteen welcome back to the island. Cal basketball pack. And Matt norlander is here with me awhile. We've quoted a podcast nearly a month if I checked the records and that's because norlander became a father for the second time. He's been on paternity leave paternity leave, but he's back now had another baby. Boy. He did not name the baby. Joe mad norlander and that's good. Considering dismal performance from the cubs over the past couple of days norlander how you've been, how's the baby little Khalil? Mack norlander is is doing fine, and it's not actually Khalil Mack, but I was damn tempted to try and make a name change after Misha cog bears are three. No, since my son, Alex was born, we're doing great great to be back on the cash at to the listeners for your patience. We appreciate that. We'll be back on a weekly schedule here and then the season gets going. We'll go back to three times a week, but things at home are. Busy an interesting, but I'm I'm making out just fine. And yes, it was. It was a boy. So there we go. I was at about. I can't remember if I said this on the podcast or not perish, but by the time we got to the moment of truth hours at about eighty to eighty three percent that we were going to have a boy. And the reason that was was my wife was unintentionally tipping your hand. So the small party thought, okay, unless she's playing this so sly. So I was ready for the doctor. You know, my wife ended up having a c. section at six fifty in the morning, and she's like, are here here is you have a, this is going to be a last second. I was like, this is going to be a girl and I was so ready for girl and so eager for one. But we gotta boy, which is awesome. So on the oldest, four boys now I have two sons norlander male gene is is running extremely strong hair, but it's fantastic and it's it's been. It's been a fun couple of weeks here with the exception of last night as I was. Was watching my Cubbies just completely Peter out and pull a Mets for the better part of the past month. Really. I mean, just could not get any runs, but it's been awesome to to watch the cubs and to kind of just, you know, be with my with my newborn hair. So that's an exciting thing. But it's obviously Tober and we're getting close to troop season. So that's a great thing to, but most of all just happy to be doing the podcast again, does the fact that you wanted to girl make you resent your second son? Not even close. I actually liked the fact that I have two boys. I, I, I don't know if we'll have a third or not. So I like that my older son Carter if we're only going to have to, I think I prefer to have the same same gender. So you know, you grow up as brothers as opposed to appoint a girl. If we do eventually go for third, which I don't know if we do or not. I will be absolutely pulling to have a girl there, but but wind up seeing. But Alex wound up winning for the name that. It was my wife's winning pick here a beat out. Luke was my choice, and then we also considered grant and Everett and and so, yeah, that wand up being real quick though, so get this. And I, I do want listener feedback on this as well. And I want you to be honest with me too. So. He was born on September, thirteenth, so September twelfth. So we picked the names reach boy and girl and doing this, not knowing that we would have the child. The next day he came early. He was earlier than the scheduled c section. And so. So we pick the names and we were going to go with Heidi for girl because Heidi, I referenced the social security list. It's consistent. You can look at the pattern of name popularity. Heidi has been Chilin in the three hundreds for sixty years in terms of how popular it is overall. It never gets into the top one hundred and never dress down into the seven or eight hundred. I was like, you know what that's common enough, but not not crazy, comet, Heidi norlander. It's got a very Swedish vibe to my wife and I totally loved it..

"Atley against this i explained why a column but before i get into that i'll ask you is there any way this is a good idea if this were put in front of matt norlander would you vote yet your name that's all the way in general no matter what format you give me no matter what tricks bells and whistles you put on it i am anti any incidentally tournament being more than sixty four teams i don't like it at sixty eight i still think it's this weird wart on tournament and i fully understand that the first four has given march madness an element of upset annually literally every single year since the first four started one of the teams that sent to dayton wins at least two games makes the second round you've obviously seen vcu in the first year the first four existed made the made the final four and so that is actually helped the lace caused there and saying there are actually good teams that can win in the tournament and so when they get sent there they're proving that they can actually do some damage obviously we get back into the philosophical debate of what you do in the ornament doesn't validate or invalidate what you did in the regular season to me that's a separate issue overall sixty four is absolute perfect number i so badly wish one day someone will go back to that number i just it's not gonna happen an absence of that can we please put a cement ceiling and the way to the world on top of sixty eight teams forever i don't want anymore teams college basketball already deals with enough crap in the regular season in terms of people thinking it doesn't have nearly enough urgency and so when you have headlines about going to seventy two which is just it's damn well and it's a weird number as isn't any number beyond sixty is just going to cause more i rolling and give more fodder to those who say college basketball is completely irrelevant from november until the first week of march don't want it whatsoever we don't need more at large teams in ardy don't like the fact that teams from small leagues have to play and understand that when.

"They're it's harish it's wednesday april twenty two thousand eighteen welcome back to the on college basketball podcast matt norlander is here within earlier today the commission on college basketball led by former secretary of state condoleeza rice announce their recommendations to essence help fix the sport of college basketball among other things they want the one in done rule gone they want independent investigations into alleged rules violations they want harsher penalties for cheaters they want players to be allowed to return to college and play if they want if they nba draft and then go unselected there are some good ideas in there even skeptic like i can admit but as expected they completely avoided the central issue which is amateurism and so they might be improving the sports slightly but they're certainly not fixing anything that's my opinion at least and i'm gonna get into it more specifically momentarily first norlander opened things up to you what you make the announcement from the commission on college basketball this a m i made that it was too early by the way sin got going to eight you cannot start at seventy m central press conference that's rough stuff writer problems there's no doubt about it but what are we doing like what are we doing with an eight am eastern seven am central five am pacific whole reveal with this thing that was bizarre but anyway i got a lot of takeaways but i'm going to be really abbreviated here just because i think we could honestly talk about this perhaps way longer than than we need to.

"Scary pairs monday april second two thousand eighteen welcome back to the eye on college basketball podcast and got mad norlander here with you we're both in san antonio we are preparing in some ways for the national championship game tip off late monday it is villanova against michigan norlander how are you on this monday morning gary parrish i'm doing okay little low on sleep but i'm still doing all right and we have a little fun last night it was great to actually lure you out and get you to socialize with us common folk for a change and we hang out say it again my man did we hang out or do we hang out we definitely hung out some things i will not share on this podcast for the benefit of both of us but really really so you but i don't remember anything happening i mean do you remember when we left to come back to the hotels last night i'm not big on remembering leaving places okay well i'm not going to get that is not really my strong i'm not gonna do that but listen we did have quite a good time and san antonio we're able to meet up with with the number of people and all this before we title games san antonio is the one beat new orleans one a for for final four destinations and we've been sitting next to me when this happened but we ran into some some fellas that appeared to be maybe in their mid fifties or so they've gone to the past twenty six final fours or whatever and they're kind of saying the same thing if run to a lot of people that just they love what san antonio has to offer and in recent years dallas and houston have hosted final fours but really texas should be the only sensor and should be the only city in texas that hosts this thing it's been it's been pretty cool i love that you can walk right to the dome.

"No in fact and i listen this is going to be a throwback reference here but unlike when we were at a previous site of the final four i did not inadvertently step on a homeless person this time okay and and the elmo's cool and it's fine i didn't really inspect a lot of it but it's also smaller bet you that's the thing with the alamo everyone goes they're like oh yeah it's not as big as i thought it would be but regardless we're here this looks like an awesome city i've barely seen any of it yet but this has a good reputation for final fours indianapolis new orleans and san antonio because they're also walkable are considered the triumvirate of spots to hold a final four i'm like what i'm seeing so far but we've only been on the ground here for about two hours if that great to be with the gp how you doing i'm good what's funny is the first time i came to san antonio which i don't know when it was obviously i was here two thousand eight for that final four but i'm not sure if i've ever been here before that seems like i might have been i have no idea but i discovered the alamo exactly the way you did like you just don't expect to bump into it right that's not usually the way sightseeing goes in cities like san antonio neo like you and yet i'm still gonna say stumbling bar probably just walking but possibly stumbling but late at night and i look up and i was like i'm standing at the alamo and the first thing he realizes yes it is smaller than you envisioned but it is it is obviously the biggest tourist attraction in san antonio and apparently you cannot miss it because i found it by accident norlander walked into it by accident and did not step on a homeless person which is what he did do in dealey plaza a few years ago which is still one of my all time favorite stories i'll give the quick version for people who might not have heard it after the national championship game we were in a car together rubbed ouster i guess.

"Scary saturday march seventeenth two thousand eighteen welcome back to the island callum basketball podcast i got matt norlander here with being more specifically it is now one forty eight m eastern on saturday march seventeenth i just got asset cbs sports network tonight we all witness history you nbc seventy four fifty four so history been made for the first time ever a number sixteen seat is beat number one seat in the ncwa tournament record for one seed before tonight it was one thirty five and now it's one thirty five in one ryan odem his retrievers gonna be remembered forever and tony bennett in his cavaliers also remember forever but for vastly different reasons obviously we're gonna spend a lot of time on this but i wanna give you first crack at it norlander what do you make of of this historic night in college basketball this is i will always remember doing this podcast with gp remember watching the game in the hotel lobby of the pittsburgh mary hot city centre with our good friends jeff goodman dana o'neil and before we get into the game in the results i feel like i'm gonna forget if i don't mention this this was a fairly just okay friday until this happened in terms of ncw tournament stuff we add few dramatic games and some somewhat close ones but this was not on pace to really be anything all that noteworthy which to me makes this result even better because march sixteenth two thousand eighteen is absolutely within the confines of college basketball and american sports it's a day that will go down in infamy we have finally broken down the last wall in terms of single game results in the tournament i still have hope and belief that maybe one day down the road decades i hope we're both alive to see it we'll see something amazing a fourteen make a final four and wouldn't that be incredible.
