"Did you think? This was right next to her hotez is 30 minute walk. And she was like, well, I don't know. We remember seeing it yesterday while we were walking. And so I just sort of remembered it. And I guess I didn't realize how far it was because we were walking and talking and having a good time. She was with zook. The crew. And I was like, this is outrageous. I said, I said, how could you tell me that? Tell me it's right by your hotel with his 30 minute or 30 minute walk. I said, imagine if I told you after you got, hey, we're going to go to dinner right after you leave the store. A little place right by our House. And then I've gotten the car with you and drove 30 minutes. That's not right with our House. What are we doing? This is why you couldn't be in the leaky black photo. Yes, I was on a I was on a journey across the country. I was trekking across New Orleans with my wife. I was trying to be a good husband. I just walk in forever. I was not going to be giving away my shot, okay? UNC one, player breakouts were there, which means players go and they sit at a little table and it's not like the big press conferences. Not one on ones, but you're there, you know, anywhere from three to 5 to 7 to ten reporters in a room and it's just a good opportunity. So I said, oh, I know what's going on right here. This is going down. So I wait for the end of the availability. He walks off the dais. And I went right up to Angie which I believe is the reporter. Before I did, he goes, is this the moment it's about to happen? I said, it's about to happen right here. And I retweeted, he got a photo of me and leaky talking as we were walking. I was like, leaky. Matt, norlander with the first of all, I've never introduced myself like this ever before in my life, and I don't think I ever will again. I said, Leakey, Matt norlander with the eye on college basketball podcast. You may or may not have heard, we mentioned you in every single episode. Gary Parrish, my coworker does this, and then he goes, and he's like, oh, dude, and he was wonderful. He's like, I can't tell you how many people have come up to me this weekend and told me about this pocket. He's like, you're on that podcast. I was like, yeah, I'm on the podcast, and then the guy who, you know, who hosts who starts the show, he's the one who mentioned it, Gary Perris. He's not here right now. I really wish he was because we want to get we wanted to get a group picture. I was getting my steps in. I said, you don't realize how much this is going to mean to a lot of people for us to get a photo. I was like, do you want to get a photo? He's like, yeah, he's like, he's like, seriously, man, I can't tell you how many people have found me told me. I was like, he was saying, this weekend, but also it had been a thing. He's like, how long have you been doing that? It's been years, it's been years. Since you played with it. And so he actually had to run to do interviews with Turner. So we got a quick photo and it's right there. And I'm 6 three. You can see leaky is like a piece of solid 6 8 6 9. This is why he is such a great defender. Dude is long. Lean athletic. He was wonderful. It was probably, I don't know, we'd probably talk for a minute and a half, but he was great. And I'm thrilled that we actually got this done. And I said, you know, maybe in time, we don't do a lot of guests, but you are the exception, my man, and he was, he was freaking fantastic. So I was all too happy all too thrilled to get this picture with the great leaky black. And as far as I'm concerned, he gets the treatment. The tera tega botched. Because I was kind of wondering, like, hey, when it's college career is done, do we make room for someone else? Nah, man. Leaky black is a permanent fixture. Permanent. There's no question. Tear tegel, he messed it up. He messed up a big time. He doesn't even know. He also does not care. Yeah, but clearly doesn't care. That's fine, but also doesn't know. But also doesn't care. I was jealous. What do they call it, fomo? I had it. You were with leaky black. And I was walking four miles. For a quesadilla. This is a ridiculous story. Right by our. It was wonderful to do it. Man, it would have been so much better if you were there. I could have been there. I was trying to be a good husband. I know. I know. Try to be a good husband. We got to pick this game and get the hell out of here. Remember when we were like a 30 minutes, we get out here. We definitely, we convened because I had to get over to the stadium. I said, and why do we do this? Every single time, yeah, you know what? If we want to make this 30 minutes tonight, I'm totally good with it. We're over an hour. There's one game to talk about. Yeah, but we had a gust for sticker to talk about and then I had to then we had to watch the throne concert to talk about and then we had to talk about cutting up our model weekends leg. We had to talk about that. That's not even in my notes. That just sort of happened. That's not even something I played. That's the show. Who are you picking? Kansas. Score. Explanation..

"Whatever. And shouts to Dave warlock, by the way, who knows that I always bring this laptop and it's like, no, you do a good job, you should sit in the seat. And so he is the best, man. He is the absolute best. He is team guster. So last night, I knew it was getting real. When one, the phone just starts really going off, and then you're damn right, I'm about to name drop. And then the guys and gusta start indicating, oh, it's getting norlander, this is getting really real. And it got so wild at a certain point. I was like, is this gonna actually start trending on Twitter? And I will be I'll be honest, GP, while it was like, I was looking at it and I had the searched thing up in Twitter for guster like live to see the inventions. And some of these tweets, I was cracking up to the point where I was like, I gotta close this 'cause I need to focus on the damn game, which I did. But it actually got so big that I was like, this is, this is now genuinely, that's a decent. This is a decent one. You're watching on YouTube, you can see just asking hunched over to staring at the other end of the floor, burning a hole in the eyes of his defense at that point and he got this damn stupid ass gurus for lover stickers behind him. But I did. I was like, you know what? I'm actually getting uncomfortable. This is too much attention. This is too much. And I was like, I need to probably obstruct this. And then no more than two minutes after I was thinking that. Wonderfully nice woman from the NAA came over and said, would it be possible, and I was like, I know why you're here. Would it be possible for you? In fact, a couple of people were like, I saw this after the fact, they're like, who's the woman with the red on talking to you right now? You got to take the sticker off. And could you take it off? I was like, I was like, yeah, and she's like, listen, it's just, it's on television. Every minute. It was a lot. And I was like, I know. And I was like, it's because he's sitting right there. I was like, if he only moved his stool two feet to the right, three feet, I'm out of view. I was like, do we want to see if he'll move it? And she's like, I don't know if he's really offered up, hey, I've got an alternative plan. Why don't you tell the old man to move his snake? No, no. Not telling him, wondering, after halftime, maybe the stool gets moved and then it's in a different spot after. And she's like, how about I keep my gusters dicker and you tell the old man to move his stool? One thing I didn't check was, what was duke score? What was the score of this game when the sticker was out? And then when I had to hide the sticker, did this flip for duke? Did it flip for duke? I can't speak to, I can't speak to that specifically. I just love that you're counter offer. Can you please get the gusters that are off of TBS was? Why don't you tell the old man to move his stool? It wasn't laid out like that. You know what I love? I love this. The final night of, again, this was not by design. The final night of this man's career. And this is one of the endearing and enduring images. Custer's for lovers. My man already was going to have a tough time with it. It gets his Cameron indoor career ended by Caroline. Gets his actual career ended by Carolina. And now he's framed up with a guster sticker for two and a half hours, live on TBS. Well, it wasn't for K himself, it was about 40, 45 minutes. And of course, like it was too much. I was like, this is actually, it's like genuinely taking away from the experience of watching this game and trying to focus. So I was all too happy then to I was going to take it off, and I was like, wait, I got this monitor right here. I can just pluck it right in front. Don't have to take the sticker off of my computer. We're good to go. And it was just, it was a wild experience. And by the way, shouts to the CBS sports headquarters people who are leaning way into this in our bosses, but yes, at a certain point, I completely get it. You're trying to broadcast the last game of Shazam's career and you're like, who is the doofus behind coach K with the sticker? So if you're wondering on Monday night, I do not anticipate making this a thing again. I will be well prepared and not try to make a spectacle. People are people are demanding that I stick it to the man and pluck it right there again. Again, I think I'll be on Kansas. I'll be behind Kansas self was up and active. So it shouldn't be a thing overall, but no, I'm not exactly trying to one up the deal on Monday. It's Saturday was more than plenty. I've got a couple other things on this, but go ahead, GP. They silenced you. They did not. They did. I was not silenced. And this is how it starts. First, and the amazing thing about all of this is I shot my shot on Sunday morning because then this thing got referenced on.

"Could I park here? I thought about it. And then I just kept driving. I figured it might cause some problems. But John wouldn't John Wooden was around, but not involved. Roy Williams is around, but not involved, and I just always assume Mike would be around, but not involved if John needs him. You know, to take a phone call, he'll obviously take it. But no, I wasn't surprised to hear him say, I'm not going to be, you know, in practices. I'm not going to be devising game plans. I'm not going to call John and say, hey, you know, what we used to do against wake forest is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I think he's 75 years old. He's going to retire and he's going to still live in the community. And I'm assuming to be visible, but that's that. That's what I always, that was my always my understanding. Yeah, to hear him speak at the presser, it really feels like he's going to entirely remove himself from duke men's basketball. So we'll see what that, you know, saying that now versus what it is, 8, ten, 12 months from now, let alone two years from now. He'll still be around again, but it's going to be a thing where he's going to want to let John have the thing entirely. So that'll be, that'll be intriguing. He did bounce back and forth between different tones of voice, different approaches. You know, he was tongue in cheek. He was serious. He was reflective. He didn't get too emotional. And I think that's because he knows he's going to be emotional before this game. So there's it's believed at this point between 75 and 80 former players are going to show up. I'm actually interested to see what the actual number is by the time we get to the game. Heads up for the listeners. It's being obviously advertised as a 6 p.m. start. They are aiming for a 6 20 p.m. eastern tip. There will be a pre game ceremony. The players I'm told are going, the former players are going to form, listen, I understand that a lot of people like they just hate duke. I get it. So if this makes you throw up in your mouth when I'm about to tell you, I get it, but I'm just telling you what the plan is, all right? So you can be ahead of prepared ahead of time. Players are going to the four players are going to come out and they're going to make like a huge, I guess, tunnel kind of thing. He's going to walk out and then all the players are going to be on the court, and then his current players are going to be on the court and that's going to be like a ceremonial kind of thing. I don't think she is going to talk before the game because I think that's going to happen. He'll go back in and then it'll be the traditional. Okay, now let's get ready to get the game going. But that's going to be insane. All those former duke players, Grant Hill, Christian leitner, all on down the line. You know, there's like, I don't know, 12 to 15 that can't come because they're playing. They can't even be there, but it's wild. So yeah, 6 20 p.m. tip on Saturday is the target. He will talk after the game, and oh, by the way, Parrish, I feel like even though I know the final four national championship games, they're huge events, but and they're mega events unto themselves, but this game feels as secondary to the proceedings as anything I've ever covered. Yeah, like do Carolina. They're gonna play a game, but it's almost like we gotta have the game so we can have the other thing. I don't know, I just have never covered something like this. It feels a little bit weird in terms of the game is clearly the secondary item from afar, do you feel as though that's the same thing as well? Yeah, I mean, it's an event more than a game. I mean, there's a lot of basketball games this weekend. Do Carolina isn't even the best or I think among the best or most interesting, it's just a game. And but it's an event. And that's the reason people are paying the incredible prices that they're paying to be in the building. I've seen a lot of snarky comments. Like, why would you pay $3000 to watch somebody coach? Well, that's not why you're paying $3000. You pay $3000 so you can say I was there. I was there the last time coach K coached inside Cameron indoor. I remember when the cubs won the World Series, friends who were fans. And they went, they picked wild amounts of money to go to, you know, I guess it went to 7 games to go to game 7 in Cleveland, was it? Yeah, and you know, you could ask the same question, why would you pay $2000 to go to a baseball game? We're not paying $2000 to go to Facebook game. You're paying $2000 to say I was there. I was there when the cubs broke this trick. And that's what people are doing this weekend. They want to be in this small building. To witness an event, to be able to subsequently say I was there that night coach K coach's last game in Cameron indoor. And so I don't know if I've been to anything quite like this. I was there, I went to Lubbock, Texas, my only trip to Lubbock, Texas. When bob knight was supposed to break the all time wins record. And I was only there for that. I don't remember who they were playing. It feels like you and LV, but I might be making that up. But I wasn't there for the game. Like, who cares a game? Who cared? Between Texas tech and somebody I don't even remember, but it was supposed to be an event. It was supposed to be history. So I was there. And they lost a stupid game. So then I had to make the call. I was awful..

"2008? No cheating? I swear to God, I just know that was the final 14. That's legit applause right there. That's good stuff. Ben Holland, obviously in the midst of their back to back to back final four appearances. Yes, that was the last time the bruins entered a season objectively with sites and heights as high as this one is going to be there. So I'm on the record as mildly fading the bruins, thinking that bruins are going to be either a two or a three sequence we get to march and not for sure sitting on that one line. But I'm not surprised to see UCLA number two, and that obviously is right in line with where you think UCLA is going to be. So I've retired the politics column years ago. But that doesn't stop people from tweeting me. Basically, every Monday of the season. Sometimes during football season as well to ask me if I would poll attack somebody, or to make the statement, I wish there was somebody in college football who would poll attack people like Gary parros Houston. So I still get this all the time. And I don't, again, I don't write that column anymore. I felt like it had a good run. I just got bored with it. But I have had people send me one person's ballot. And I will say that that column was mostly about illogical decisions and or just careless mistakes. And there's an example of that with this with this one owner. It's been said to me by Memphis fans and Kentucky fans. So this is like the one thing in the world Memphis fans in Kentucky fans agree on is that this guy did not do his AP preseason ballot properly. His name's Jerry Carina. You know, Jerry. And he did not rank either Memphis or Kentucky this season. In the preseason. And he didn't rank Kentucky. I went to he explained as a people, which I can appreciate. Let me tell you why I did what I did. And here's what he wrote. He said Kentucky stunk last year. No argument here. And then he continued the voters should let them earn their way in. And I do think that is faulty logic when it comes to a preseason basketball poll. Because the fact that Kentucky stunt last year has literally nothing to do with whether Kentucky will be good or bad this year because it's almost an entirely different slash new team. If you just don't believe Kentucky's gonna be good, right that. Say, I don't think Kentucky's gonna be good. So I'm not ranking Kentucky in the preseason. But to base it on, they should have to earn their way in because they stunt last year, again, as nonsensical. Four of their 5 starters this season are going to probably be brand new players. And so what does it matter if they stung last year as it pertains? The invert of that is Iowa was really good last season. So I'm gonna rank Iowa again this season. None of it's not the same team. You shouldn't. So I don't understand how that works. For instance, think of it this way. Detroit piston stunt last year. But what if this off season just play along? They signed LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. They'd be the favorites to win the NBA title. Perfect to the voters. They stumped last year wouldn't have any wouldn't matter. And I'm not saying severe Wheeler and Tai Tai Washington and Kellen Grady and Oscar's G way are LeBron James and Kevin Durant and Steph Curry and James Harden. But they could be. I'm just saying that Kentucky's almost certainly going to be to be good. And either either way, the fact that they stunt last year that it doesn't have any impact whatsoever on this season's team. Think about this. Kentucky, 2008, 2009. Lost 14 times went to the NIT. They stunk that year. Their preseason number four, the following year when 35 and three finished fourth at kin Pong. One of those three lawsons came to Devon down in South Carolina gamecock, she asked David Downey, but the point is, it didn't matter to most AP voters that Kentucky stunt last year. Because last year was a year that they didn't have John wall, DeMarcus cousins, Eric Bledsoe, and this upcoming year was going to be a year where they had John wall DeMarcus cousins Eric west so they voted a preseason number four, and then they lived up to expectations. So, yeah, that was just like one. If, by the way, if you don't want to write Memphis of the preseason because you don't believe in 17 year olds or because, you know, penny Hardaway still hasn't been doing instantly tournament. I think you're wrong, but whatever. I can get down with that. But not ranking Kentucky because quote, Kentucky stunt last year just that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And by the way, most AP voters did rank Kentucky. They walk at our tenth in the AP. They are indeed tenth and duke is on the blue blood on the blue blood tray here a couple of quick notes before we before we get to what you want to get to and wrap up. Duke is 9. Suzuka's non Kentucky stand are coming off some of the worst seasons in program history, particularly for Kentucky, obviously, but duke didn't make the tournament for the first time. Two and a half decades there. This is from duke athletics. How about this? So duke and UNC fence, this is for you if you guys like to puff your chest out at these kind of stats. Because I do think they're quite remarkable and notable. Sudoku number 9 is the 14th straight season that the blue Devils will open a season in the top ten of the AP poll. Speaks to obviously programs. The recruits they've been able to get, you'll also notice that 14 straight seasons largely coincides with the one and done era reflecting how Mike Czechia eventually changed his recruiting strategy. Duke also has the longest streak of any team in the country being ranked in the top ten at any point in the season. 26 years now technically duke will have been at least one week in the top ten the next trivia time. Oh God, if I can do this like a Turkey, it's like a Turkey. I can get there we go. All right, so duke is going to go 26 straight years with at least one week inside the top ten. And most of those years, it's not just one week. It was almost the entire season. The next closest program has been in the top ten at least one week for 16 seasons. Who's number two? In that streak right now. Kansas. Gosh. What? What?.

But someone who he looks like to me, he kind of reminds me of the kind of player who pops on the recruiting trail will be a good first year player, then as midway through his sophomore season, it's just going to all come together and he's going to wind up being one of the 5 to ten best guys in the Big Ten. Aside from him being juwan Howard's son, committing to Michigan, highly recruited player, all that. He just looks like he's got the tools to be a very, very good college player with a season or a season and a half of seasoning, if you will. And it should keep Michigan and we talk about where you got him in the preseason where I have them. This will be a Michigan team that will enter the season as a Big Ten contender, hundred Dickinson potential first email American with sights on making the final four. It just came up short possession short last season. It seems like Michigan has maintained this going forward. It has reached a spot and we'll have to kind of circle back and confirm this once we get ten 12 games into this season parish. But it's basically just about reach a spot here where the expectations have just state steady since they last beeline. They just stay steady. And that's a phenomenal thing we'd consider the circumstances under which beeline left what's happened to his career since he left and went to the cabs. He's no longer even there. And the time of the calendar when they got Joan Howard. And the fact they got to on Howard and he's done this well. It's really something remarkable. And oh, by the way, the fact that you want how it happens to have a son who's damn good college basketball player just further reinforces Michigan's standing atop that conference and then the national landscape. I think we're overlooking the fact that he goes by jet. I love it. Two teas. Need more jets in the world. I dig it. At least need more pilots. Need more time? Fair enough. I didn't know where you were going there. That's right. That could very much very much be the case there. But yes, I love jet. We got jet coming in and again, just to remind I love the fact that one of the 5 best players in the sport might be a dude named Chet this season. We need more jets. We need more chats. Love this. Funny, little quote from Jeff Brazil, Paul Ducati on Jed Howard's commitment. The question was somewhere along the lines of like, you know, how'd you tell your mom had to tell your dad? They told his mom before he told his dad. And according to jet, he was in a car ride with his mother, and he said, I'm going to Michigan and I'm going to play for your husband. Just sort of a funny way to put it. I'm going to play for your husband. I wonder how many times in history and recruit has told a woman I'm gonna play for your husband in college. Like, it can't be a common thing. Can't be coming. No. So that was that was good. And then I'm with you. I like him a lot. He checks two boxes that I think are important. He's a former player slash coach's son, right? And he's also talented. Sometimes the coaches sons or former player sons, they're not that talented, they just grew up in it, so they got good. But they don't have the talent to go with it. And then every once in a while, you get these dudes who did the former player from a coach's son, and they're also super duper talented..

"Dead leg, how surprised were you when Juan Howard's son announced he was gonna play for his father and his father's Alma mater. What are we doing here? Who were the other school? Do you have in front of you? I don't have his recruiting page up. Who were the other schools quote unquote recruiting jet Howard? He took visits to NC state Georgetown and Tennessee. You know what? More power to him because I think that he should want to do that, right? But in our heart of hearts. I don't doubt that he wants to do it. And listen, I'm not questioning Kevin or pat or they're obviously they know how to run their basketball programs. There is no scenario I'm bringing you on Howard's kid on official visit. 0% chance. It's one thing when you have the Patrick Baldwin junior situation. That's different because you got a 5 star future lottery pick consensus top ten guy and his dad is the head coach at a bid major. His dad's the head coach in the horizon league. So if you're duke, for instance, 'cause duke did recruiting. That makes sense to me because it might just ultimately come down to I don't want to play in the horizon league when I can play in the ACC. You know, I don't want to play a Milwaukee when I can play a duke. So I think if you're Mike chesky, John Shire, you hang in there till the end and just hope that you are offering something so obviously superior to what his father can offer that he might just say, dad, I love you, but I can't pass on the opportunity to go play in camera indoor. Jed Howard's dad is the coach at Michigan. He's like, why would he I'm not saying nobody would ever pick NC state Georgetown or tennesse over Michigan because that's obviously ridiculous. Of course, some people would. But why would the Michigan coach's son pick any of your schools over the school at which his father coaches? And his father attended. I mean, listen, like I said, I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way. I'm not saying these people are ridiculous. I'm just saying, I remember people talking into this back in the summer. They were like, yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see where jet Howard ends up. I'm like, what are you talking about? Where do you think Jenna Howard's ending up other than Michigan? His dad's a coach at Michigan. He's been a good player, by the way. Oh, by the way, Milwaukee. Two O 5 in my rankings. I've heard from a few Panthers fans that aren't satisfied with that, but they were bad in recent years. We'll see what Baldwin can do in the horizon. As for Jed Howard? Yeah, this was always going to be the endgame. Just a side note on his play..

"What do you do with that? How much can you go from good to elite? Bringing back everybody who mattered to a good team. That's what we're asking for today. That's what you're asking. Yes. Yes, because I think you see that with some regularity year over year in college basketball. Not always. But particularly with the coaching, which is another reason I included in my capsule, you give me matte painter, that size Jade ivey is probably gonna go in the first round of the 2022 NBA draft. Now I'll also be clear like I bounced a few thoughts off some coaches and a couple MBA scouts and the Jade navy stuff is super interesting because there's a couple of people who are telling me he's he can do it, but let's just wait and see. He needs to prove it year over year. He's got a really make some improvements with his shot selection decision making, but the talent is there. But yes, if I think ultimately, at least two pros on the team, maybe even more. Maybe as many as four, that's why I went with Purdue there. I know it's a little bit high there, but again, like to have a little bit of fun and yeah, I do think that perdue will be the best team in college basketball, but man, the Big Ten atop, it should be a fantastic race. You've got a fun rivalry evolving with Michigan and Illinois, hunter Dickinson, going after Illinois fans. I think that's I think that's fantastic. So yeah, I think a team like that certainly and a team like Oklahoma state who I have 26. They lose Kate Cunningham. Number one player in the draft. They bring back almost everyone else from a four seat. I actually have them technically slide the lower than where they would have aligned with the four seat last season. But if you're looking for a dark horse team that's really, really good if you're looking for futures. I think Oklahoma states won. I just touched on a couple more teams real quickly to your GP within my top 30 to 40 if you will. I put Carolina 20 they bring back a ton. I think Hubert Davis has a top 20 talented roster. I think you'll get a little bit of variation on where the tar heels are going to wind up. But I put them 20, and then I put if we're going to talk blue Bloods real quick here, I've got Kentucky ahead of duke, which I don't think you have correct. You're different from me. Don't you not have duke ahead of Kentucky? Have duca head of Kentucky. Kentucky's another one like Texas and cans and who's gonna be Kentucky's best player? Another great question. Don't know. I asked people close to the program, and the name I got back was Kean Brooks. That's my last line of the Kentucky capsule is something along the lines of keon Brooks is the player who can thrive no matter what lineup you put him in. No matter who's around him on the floor, he is the Kentucky player most likely to be the best. He's the constant. So I think that's the most likely answer, but they bring a lot of these skills. We know who the best player is going to be. We know the best players are going to be at duke. We know who the best player is going to be at Gonzaga. We know who the best player is going to be at Illinois. We know who the best player is going to be at Michigan. Some of these places we just, it's a little harder to figure out. I've got Kentucky 13, credit Kentucky athletics with this stat. They have 12 scholarship players on their roster. With more than 13,000 minutes play, they average 436 points for their career. They've got a lot of experience just not together. Only three freshmen coming in, they're good freshmen. Don't get me wrong. But I don't know if any of them are going to wind up being as important as Oscar Chi boy West Virginia transfer Davey on mint. I've got Kentucky 13. I've got duke at 15, and I know we're going to wind up talking about duke else as we move on in the preseason. Both those teams obviously to make the tournament Paolo pantera should be just phenomenal this season. And so because of that, I had to put duke top.

Tommy Lloyd Is the Next Coach at Arizona

"Matt. Norlander is here with me in. Arizona has found shaun miller's replacement deadline when we talked about this after shawn miller was fired. We went through a list of candidates. And i think we sort of settled on the end of the day. I think it's going to be a gonzaga associate head coach. Tommy lloyd or former arizona star current pacific head coach damon stoudamire fast forward to today. It is tommy lloyd. He is leaving gonzaga. He will be the next head coach of the wildcats. Your thoughts. yeah. We have a listen. We have a long time coach in waiting for program legend. Who's been there decades deciding to leave and and and take a job in the pac twelve and It's mike hopkins all over can don't just kidding. But the parallels are actually there will credit an unnamed person. We both know who who made that to made. That comparison this i think is a pretty good higher now. This has been buzzed about. Since before shawn miller got fired. I have talked to a couple of people out for your. Oh quick i get your thoughts on it. There are a couple of people i've talked to. Who will never be not convinced. That tommy lloyd was approached about this like a month ago and basically said we want you to be the next coach in gonna fire shawn miller. I'm not saying that happened. I'm telling you there are people that believe this and this has been wired for a long time now. There were a couple of days here the past couple of days where the search kind of went on a not a pause but they topped the brakes through more interviews. That happened on tuesday. And they did legitimately interview miles. Simon damon stoudamire. Jason terry josh passenger. All these people were interviewed. There's a belief that eric muscleman whose doors to get himself his own new contract which if true or not. I don't think he needed arizona to get paid the way he got paid. But good on him. So

The case for Baylor at No. 1 over Gonzaga

"The only respectful way to begin. This episode is by recognizing that scott drew baylor bears formerly known. As bill henderson's baylor bears improved a seventeen on the season tuesday night with an eighty-three sixty nine victory at texas. They outscored the longhorns. By seven in the first half they outscored the longhorns. By seven in the second half as a result baylor otherwise known as terry eagles alma mater is now seventeen and fifteen. Double digit wins. The bears are number one at kim palm. Their number one in the net. they are awesome undeniably. Norlander your turn to talk about baylor. Are you going to spend the next few minutes showing proper respect for the first lady of baylor basketball or are you going to once again disrespect. Kelly drew got drew. Plus mackenzie payton brody. Not to mention homer and janet price and tara dana and her husband. Casey bryson anna isaiah caleb. In luke plus drew barrymore drew carey. Drew brees drew bledsoe. Dr drew drew. Gooden andrew mcintyre how are you gonna handle this moment. bryce doesn't care does care. He'd bryce doesn't care. I talk to about it. He doesn't care. How are you going to atone for the fact that you still have a number one. I mean. I think it's disrespectful at this point. Daily top twenty five and one. After what i saw last night. I got baylor number one. But you don't and you disrespect the entire through family. And every drew. She has to drew mcgarry as well. You're disrespecting them all you've got number two. I think you're the one who needs to explain himself. I actually can't explain myself. And i do get asked this every day. I saw strong joe last night trying to make the case that baylor should be number one and i let it be clear. I won't argue with anybody that says baylor should be number. One baylor at this moment has a better resume than gonzaga. Got six quarter on lindsay. Does eggs only have five. Baylor is got the best adjusted efficiency margin in the country and one of the best of all time at this point. If you wanna if you wanna put baylor number one it is fine with me. It's just. I think we've talked about this. Before i made a rule a longtime ago i will not drop number one team unless it loses the only time i made an exception i went and looked it. Up is two seasons ago. Kansas was number one in the top twenty five and one to open the season. Kentucky might have been to. Duke was in the top five somewhere and do zion williamson cameras and remember the other one started with our allies and it was. It was whatever it doesn't matter. It doesn't rj barrett and so they went out and they just throttled kentucky on opening night at bankers life. And i just. I was even conflicted. Then because keynes's is just one and it was one zero and number one and i was like i don't feel silly not to have that duke team. That just did that to kentucky ranked number one. So i made an exception to the rule. Then but i've been ranking college basketball teams for better or worse for like more than fifteen years now and i've only dropped a number one team without losing one time and that is the example.

Michigan State's NCAAT chances kaput? Who winds up with No. 1 overall seed?

"On thursday night gonzaga beat san diego ninety sixty two so the top ring zags sixteen to no second ranked bears fifteen no deadly. Somebody asked me a question on twitter yesterday. So let me present it to you if zaka and baylor both inner selection sunday undefeated. Which team is the number. One overall seed in the ncaa tournament. I- address this exact thing in my power rankings. This week baylor's the number one overall seed. That's not going to be up for too much debate. I don't think baylor will have at that point. Accrued many more quad one wins and road wins tougher opponents in gonzaga. So i don't think it will be up for much debate and that's before you even get into the question of whether or not Those teams have not played in their league tournaments. I think you're right. The question was presented to me about the number one overall seed the instability tournament. And then about whether i would adjust the top twenty five and one and i will not adjust the top twenty five and one i if i will not drop gonzaga from number one unless it loses. And that's been one of my kinda rules since i've been doing this job. I don't punish number one teams unless they actually lose. The only time can remember. Doing it is win duke zairian cam and who was the other guy that played with them. Norlander see if you can remember this time that team duke zay on camera. tish yeah. He's from canada. Third third pick in the draft of first team. All american show trae jones. Trae jones was on that team. But it wasn't him jack white. It was not yet check why it was not the third pick. Javelin delory in the subsequent. Nba draft. His name was started with all our in the next letter was j. rj. They call him rj. Oh i think i've heard this guy You're gonna have to help me with the last name though. Rj bay. That's right that's right that's right. Yeah that was The yeah he was the other player on this. So that's the only time. I can remember dropping a number one team without the number one team. Losing just silly to have anybody other than duke number one after that performance against that opponent on that stage. So i've done it before. But i will not do it. In in this scenario to punish gonzaga without losing would be to punish them. Strictly on league affiliation. And i won't do that but that said you're exactly right. Both schools have five quadrant. One wins right now. But according to the net the current net rankings baylor has six more quad one opportunities in the regular season. Gonzaga has just one so baylor could end up and likely would end up with basically twice as many quad wins as gonzaga. So i agree with you on selection sunday. If both teams are undefeated baylor based on the resume would be number one overall seed regardless of whether the people and the top twenty five one or anything else actually reflects

Hawkeyes can't back up their lofty ranking, suffer humbling loss to Indiana

"Leg. I think we might need to revisit. The word realistic. The definition is as follows. Having were showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected. I bring this up because on wednesdays. Podcast i asked you if you believed indiana had a realistic chance to win at iowa on thursday night you said no. I said no. Just didn't seem like a sensible or practical idea of what can be achieved or expected and for at least three reasons. One iowa is clearly better than indiana in the season to iowa would have the best player on the court. In the form of luca garza an three iowa was inside carver. Hawkeye arena where it inner with a nine and record. Obviously you know what happened next score indiana iowa sixty nine not n- is roy j carver famed industrialists rolling over in his grave. Norlander what was it like for you to watch and unrealistic thing. Become a reality late thursday night. Miriam webster defines the word regret as sorrow aroused by circumstances beyond one's control or power to repair. That game was out of my control. It was out of your control of conduct or an event giving rise to regret undesirable unwelcome. And as that game played out and as it got into the second half. I thought this is interesting. This is look this indiana getting a good win. I was really going to take this loss all right. You know what this is. This'll be something good to talk about on the. Oh wait a second. What did we say at the end of the last podcast. We said too much did we. Did we call it a little too far. Yeah did i have someone tweet at me. A link to the definition of realistic. You bet your ass. I did congrats indiana fans although you might be super conflicted this morning here because obviously you want your team to do well. Obviously a decent portion of you just love basking self loathing when archie miller doesn't performance walls coaches. You'd like you got a good win here. This is the kind of win. That's gonna get you into the ncaa tournament. like i. i think the hoosiers someway somehow they're going to be in that incident tournaments if it's because of a win like this. Are you suggesting that was a cpap win was well. They're not maybe it was. How about a vaulting win. They might not have been in prior to this game. Get the win vaulted. And that's even better than the seat. Bump vault vault launch it right there like a catapult right over great job i indiana i gotta figure this is probably a top five win of the season considering iowa's a top five team in the metrics. It is a game on the road again even though it's not a true true wrote environment. It's still a so. This is one of the five wins and think anyone has had the season and india. It wasn't like the squeaked it out they got it done. They beat an iowa team that i checked late last night. I'll bring up right now. Yes i was still third at ken palm as we report this podcast on friday morning and the win by twelve so a wonderful job. Clearly you know. That's the kind of game if i speak to. The hawk is real quick. And you're right. I actually have in my notes cover. Hawkeye's rolling over in his nest. Not his grave. He's really covering his nest That defense there is obviously problematic for iowa. That's the that's the kind of game. Where whether you're a fan. Or just a bit of a skeptic of the hawkeyes early this is why i don't know if i can take them to get to the final four. I still can get there. It was just a disappointing performance. What you see on on thursday night and what was your primary take away. Okay let me tell you. I experienced this indiana comeback. So obviously we we. We have a new president now and the country has been an interesting place to live in recent weeks and a guy with the high school with who was like a genuinely good guy but we see the in completely different ways In probably every election of our our lives. I've voted one way. And he has voted another and so he reached out to me and he said hey. Listen i i want to try to better understand like i keep hearing people say you know you need to listen to other people and i want to try to understand in an and you can see if you would it. Be okay if i reached out to you every once in a while and say. Hey well what do you think about this. What do you think about that and he. Here's what i think about this. And what am i missing. And i thought it was like a sweet gesture and so i said sure. Of course i'd be happy to talk gone. Eleven biden voters chatty to you like that by the role of the roles are reversed. And i said you know what i of course and anytime you wondering why so. Why does gp think this way. Or why do i think this way. And you want to bounce off of me. And i'm here of course.

College Basketballs Uncertain Return to the Court

"I on thursday. Tupper beat six rate. Kansas ninety awesome performance and then on friday afternoon mark to the gonzaga coach. Confirm that the zags beat auburn on friday morning. Nine hundred sixty seven after a player believed to be julian straw. They're tested positive for covid. Nineteen so norlander. We're gonna get into next credible opening week on the court second. But let's start here where you surprise in an auburn still played on friday after a gonzaga player test positive. I was surprised because my opinion is that if other teams and i'm not saying all other teams but many other teams were in that situation. The game would not have been played in my opinion. If gonzaga ran into the issues it ran into and it was playing in belleville. gonzaga would not have played. It's game on friday. Gonzaga might not have even played a game against kansas or fill in the other opponent again. If you put it in. And i'm i'm speaking from what i'm seeing here and the protocols and everything that goes into place to even holding this in the state of connecticut okay. Gonzaga had a member of its travel party test positive on thursday gonzaga took two different planes to the event specific and has taken two different buses. It's it's doing specifically to guard against this. But obviously there is no full on guarding against this so we played kansas. And we'll get but then you know at least one player as positive another believed to be The players roommate is kept out as a precautionary reason. And the game goes off because and you can speak to a gp. Frankly we'll we'll get to virginia san francisco the minute but i was i was. I was watching that game. So i didn't hear fuse press conference. I've seen some of what he said. They're the relying on the florida health officials as being the ones that were to clear it and the health officials down there made that determination and it might wind up that that determination is going to be okay in the end. But i've received four text messages from coaches to heads to assistance. All of them basically asking why in the hell is gonzaga in auburn. Being allowed to play right now one of them saying if this was us there is no shot in hell that we would have been able to play and so this this is certainly captured. A little bit of attention around the college basketball world understandably so gonzaga's looked awesome. But you can make an easy argument that it that it should not have a have played the game. What are your thoughts. And then what can you share for the listeners. That might not have seen a about what few said in his postgame. Zoom press conference. Okay so mark was clearly asked about it and he said he kept it very simple. He's did we followed turns guidelines not we tournament guidelines were were in place and established. We had this positive test. And then we follow the guidelines and then the florida health officials came in and they contact tracing how they contact tracing. They told us we were okay. We were cleared to play and we play. He kept it. He didn't really expand anymore than that but listen. They didn't do anything illegal. They possibly did something irresponsible but didn't do anything illegal. They didn't act in defiance of the tournament or florida. Health officials noted that florida as a state hasn't taken covid nineteen that seriously to begin with. So what florida. Health officials were okay. Where quite clearly would be the same thing that said california. Health officials are okay. Wis lucky if they wanted to play the game. They're lucky they were in florida as opposed to to somewhere else. And you're exactly right. It's bubble ville or in south dakota. I don't believe this game would have been played. Wichita state got sent home from south dakota because they had maybe a couple of people in the travel and party test positive. They were like okay. Get outta here. You're not playing today. you're not playing tomorrow. you're not playing it off. So i don't know that this game would have been played if it were a tournament. Where you're at or in south dakota but because this was sort of a thing they put together in fort myers as long. Auburn was cool to play and gonzaga wanted to play. they were allowed to pluck. I though was surprised that the game went off. Because i mean we've seen baseball teams. Get shut down over one positive test during the major league baseball season the world series if it would have if the dodgers did not win the game justin turner had to be removed because they got a positive test back of the game so they take justin turner around. They complete that game. The understanding was that game. Seven of the world series would not have been the following night. They would not have played until everybody can test test test for a few days and they make sure it's safe to play and so yes. I was surprised that they played the game. And hopefully nothing comes from it that it doesn't end up being a quote unquote superspreader of it. Because if we an outbreak now at gonzaga because by the way gonzaga tweet video from the locker room after the victory over kansas and they're all celebrating no mask jewish authors in front of mark. Few right in the middle of the celebration. He is believed to be the one who test positive. So hopefully nothing comes of this but if we have a subsequent outbreak at gonzaga or subsequent at auburn gonzaga is going to become the biggest story in college basketball. And it's not going to be a sports story anymore. It won't be because jalen suggs looks. Incredible it'll be because they knew they positive test in their locker room and they played less than twenty four hours putting their players at risk and the auburn players at risk. I hope it doesn't come to that. But if it comes to that this becomes a bigger story than just to college basketball story. It becomes something that's on. Cbs evening news. Yeah we'll wait and see if that does happen. I mean auburn's gotta be you know held equally responsible and all of this because it opted to play the game regardless you know there was no self imposed penalty here. Handed down by bruce pearl. That was not in play on friday and so inherently like. You know the chances. Go up that you're going to potentially be infected. We don't know but it's clearly out there. I mean there are. There are no shortage of schools and athletic directors coaches. Just straight up would not play the game. So we'll wait arizona. State would not play baylor because the baylor coach tested positive. Not even a player who was who was gonna who was on the court with other players twenty four hours earlier right and that came from that even came from above. Bobby's hurley's bobby hurley's had which is the case in a lot of these instances but frankly what gonzaga auburn decided to do it. Just flies in the face of convention in college sports in professional sports that we've seen and we'll will you know we're recording this on friday afternoon. We'll wait and see what's going to happen here. Gonzaga's got some high profile games ahead and we're really enough one of them's blade baylor like if there's if there's one team that's actually going to be good with this like it's baylor. They might just play the game regardless. But we'll wait and see if either of these teams are now forced because if it gets another positive one after that like they have no choice. They're going to have to shut down for two weeks and then ask themselves if playing against auburn was really worth it you know. Was it worth it. Because now you're gonna lose these other games

All evidence points to the Big Ten being the best league in America for a second straight season

"Today, turn our attention to the big ten where I have Iowa winning the regular season title while Norlander has pegged Illinois as the. Favourite and Wisconsin to finish second. So let's start there. Norrland explain to me why you're being totally disrespectful the frame McCaffrey to Luca Garza to this public research university that was founded in eighteen forty seven at CBS sports me Jerry Paul David all have Iowa in the top two but you and strong JAL cow bone have Iowa third in the big ten. Explain Yourself. This is gene wilders Al-Matar we're talking about for crying out loud. Oh, there we go. Something tells them you've been snooping around the Iowa wikipedia page. That's where I get all my goodland ACM forty, seven trivia gets on. What's the oldest institution in the Big Ten? Let's let's what do we think it is big ten rules. What's two oldest one founded first? What's our guest founded? I I'm running through right now I'm going to say it's Penn State Penn. State's your guests I'm going to go. I'M GONNA go man is a tough one I'm going to say. That's a good one. I'M GONNA say Michigan I'M GONNA Michigan sealed list no idea by the way no idea someone chips someone pleads tweet us and let us know I don't know when the oldest we could. Actually we could go and look through all the wikipedia pages in real time here. But let's let's make a fun quick podcast here you want to know why I have. Iowa. Third I'll let you WanNa know what that's what I want. That's what you want to I'll let you know that I talked with Sam visine yesterday good old Sam. Who May who may appear on this podcast remember never know it's always out there. He actually asked me where I have Iowa in my one, two, three, fifty seven and I said, well, I'm GonNa have them in the top ten but I'm actually going to have them behind. Illinois in Wisconsin. He goes. You're absolutely right and I don't know how many people are gonNA. Agree with you. But I'm with you hundred percent and the reason why is this this team has the preseason national player of the year and Luca Garza it's got a great talent and Joe Camp. Jordan bohannon terrific Khanna McCaffrey. Great. But defensively, there's enough there that are not there that I'm going to. Just sell a bit on a twenty eleven team from last season ninety, seven defensive efficiency at Ken Palm. I like Wisconsin's overall team just a smidge better smidge and I do like Illinois I think he's GonNa be the best team in the big ten. So I love that we have we need some more genuine disagreement on the podcast here I've got Illinois definitely as the as the best team in the big ten and then Wisconsin and then Iowa. But in the Grand Scheme of the sport, I, think those are three of the ten best teams in college basketball. We agree on that have Iowa fifth in the top twenty five in one. Illinois six and Wisconsin Tint So. You know. We're all in the same ballpark and I do think you can reasonably despite. My anger at the top of the podcast I do think you can reasonably have those three teams in. Any order as for Iowa. Five players last season start at least twenty games all five or back plus they get Jordan Bohannon Beck, they finish twenty third at. Kim. Tom. But they were 97th in defense of efficiency and quite clearly if you're trying to look for a reason why Iowa isn't actually going to break through and make the final four for the first time since nineteen eighty. Where you start is on the defensive side of the ball ninety seven defensive efficiency. It's hard to be great when you are that bad on the defensive end of the court,

Gregg Marshall denies assaulting his players

"So embattled Wichita state coach Gregg Marshall released another statement second statement about the allegations made against him earlier this week. and. Among other things, he said this in response to the allegations put forward in the media I simply state unequivocally that I have never physically struck a player or colleague he continued allegations claiming otherwise are false. It is important that the investigation is school. This investigation that Wichita State. is currently. Conducting. It is important that the investigation conclude its work without outside influence in unrelenting character assassination by a member of the media that's Jeff Goodman. That repeatedly targets in my family threatens to undermine the impartiality of the investigation in quote, I should make it clear. Gregg Marshall didn't say Jeff Goodman I was just sort of added that to Mexican people understand the unrelenting character associated by a member of the media. That seemed directed at at Jeff Goodman who of course, interviewed more than thirty people connected to Wichita State Program to write the story that they published at stadium a what stadium dot com last week. So norlander, what did you think of Gregg Marshall said? Statement because it goes way further than the first statement in the first statement, he did not say he's never physically struck a player or Collie and that's when he did. On my question for you is, why do you think Greg Marshall made this statement which was six days after the stories. From Goodman and from the athletic why do you think he made the statement? He made six days for moved. I have a thought on a theory on but I was curious what you might think I think he has. been made aware or has reached the conclusion on his own that listen. If you put your hands on player, it's over. And so at that point, you got really one option if your goal is trying to your job and that is just to say, didn't happen.

The Shergar Case

"In nineteen twenty, the country of Ireland consisted of two self-governing territories. Northern Ireland and southern Ireland both of which belonged to the United Kingdom. Following the war of independence and the anglo-irish trading of Nineteen Twenty, one southern Ireland declared independence from the UK and became the Republic of Ireland while no, the norlander remained under. Well, unionists in the north didn't agree. Many inhabitants of Northern Ireland were descended from English ancestors and Dente more is British instead of Irish hence their loyalty to the UK. Moussa Cisse is going to Memphis

"See say five star prospect originally in the class two thousand twenty one, but now I'm class. Two Thousand Twenty announced this afternoon that he is committed to the University of Memphis. Pippen Hardaway's Tigers over offers from Georgetown Georgia. Florida State Lsu and Kentucky for those unfamiliar. I guess you can on some level. Call him a quote local product because he did spend the past year at Lausanne collegiate school, which is seven miles from the Memphis. MEMPHIS campus, but he's not really a local product. He was born in West. Africa moved to New York, in two thousand, fifteen played at Saint Benedict's prep in New Jersey played at Christ King in New York, then relocated a Memphis, the plate laws and this past season led the links to a state title, one Mr Basketball and the state of Tennessee average eighteen point, four points, fifteen point, three rebounds, and a ridiculous nine point two blocks per game, and now we have college basketball season. He says he'll play for the Memphis Tigers. norlander break it down. What do you make a penny? Hardaway lending a five star center in two straight recruiting classes last time. It was James Wiseman this time Mussa. Break it down Oh. Yeah, here's what I got a question for you I. Mean Here's here's was Gary Perez? Is tweet on Wednesday afternoon breaking all caps course. This was an all caps breaking the way I don't i. You know what expected to go to Memphis. I. Don't know if all caps was warranted there. Can you take me inside the thought process versus not in a? Regular grammar versus going all caps in that moment, please. Young Mussa say follows exactly ten people on twitter. I am one of them, and so I wanted to make sure he he saw how much emphasis I put on his commitment. How do I just know that two four six years from now if and when Lucy say is? Able to earn a consistent NBA paycheck, and perhaps it's even a player of of importance in the NBA. Gary Parrish will never ever ever forget or forget to remind people that there was one point in time and Mussa CCA followed ten people on twitter. And he was one of them. I honestly don't even understand it. Because like he used to follow a lot of people on twitter, I noticed and. One of them was not me, and then suddenly he cut almost everybody, but added me I don't really even know the connection there, but. I want I knew he'd see the tweet. And once I knew each the tweet I wanted to I wanted him to experience in all. Caps tweet obviously as as faithful podcast, listeners will know. Also one Moussa, see say. was tutored by your own son so I think. That might also be an influence. Parish working behind the scenes to get it done for Memphis. You've gotta admire actually ironically enough this happening in a week where parish is not on his local radio show. The conspiracy only strengthens. Okay, so here's what here's my question for you. you say the six eleven likely one and done talent averaged. Eighteen point four points, fifteen point, three rebounds and nine point two blocks last season pick memphis over Georgetown. Tom Kriens Georgia bulldogs Kentucky and Lsu. My question is. Who the hell is this guy planning? Nine point two blocks a game what? I have not I have. It's private school basketball in the state of Tennessee so? Took it over people who look like my oldest son in some cases like the blogging. What after another like I don't know I never been to a laws and basketball game and I've never even actually met. Say although it is true, my son and Mussa. Were classmates in my son to tutor him in in certain classes I. I don't even know if say knows that. My son is his classmate. He might, but I don't know that I've never I've never even had a real conversation about Mussa with my son. Other than so, what kind of young man is he and was like really nice? Really Really Nice guy like you know doesn't walk around like some big time. Basketball player I the only other times. I would talk to myself about Moses. Like Hey, did you see that dunk? That was on instagram last night or something like that? Because like fans are crazy, and at one point, the two schools involved in the Memphis in. RECRUITMENT MOST HEAVILY WE'RE MEMPHIS IN KENTUCKY and I'm like it doesn't matter what happens I. will somebody connected to one of those fan? Bases will blame me for it if HE GOES TO MEMPHIS, Kentucky fans it'd be because I pushed into Memphis somehow through my son, and if he goes to Kentucky Memphis fans, it'd be like see parish eight says all the modern salads like I'm not even getting involved. The only time my son had ever been asked about Mussa as recruitment. That I witnessed was one of my friends recently asked him when they were over at the house, and my son's answer was he always talked about? Georgetown but I don't think he's going to go to Georgetown and that was the extent of it. So he was right. Maybe my son's got a future and being a recruiting analyst, right?

"Fifteenth Two Thousand Twenty Welcome back to the CBS sports I on college basketball as where we sometimes discuss camel. And Leaky Black Matte new. Orleans is here with being near is big breaking news this afternoon? The homie Booth Got Aka both GAC AKA botch got has announced transferred from Utah to Minnesota so when I own college basketball legend is headed to the twin cities norlander, your instant, reaction and analysis, please. Of course that is the Minnesota fight, Song. You are hearing. Fade down start this podcast for those soups Twang are wondering. Wait a second. You double, maybe triple. Check your phone. That's right. I on College Basketball Podcast, sometimes leaky black. You know what you can take ownership leaky black I. Want Dibs on booth, gotch, going to Minnesota finally happening I. GotTa Tell Ya. We get this news on a Monday. GPA set in the over under on Richard, Patino, ten year contract extension and thirty six and a half hours for signing booth. What do you got the over the under there? I think in different times. Perhaps I would go. Under, but we are now living in terrible economic reality and I think ten year contract extension Dr Probably thing of the past at least temporarily. Don't underestimate the power influence and dynamism of booth, gotch returning home to Minnesota. He four seven sports. I picked Minnesota because it was the best fit for me. Overall playing in the home state, being with my family during these difficult times and playing with the talented group, coming in Gotcha is going to most likely. Sit Out for next season. He will apply for a waiver. listen. It's booth Gotcha. Anything's possible and I'd love nothing more than to talk with. With you on this podcast sometime later this year and dedicated an entire episode to Gotcha getting immediately eligible, but I don't know if he can pull that ultimately, they'll goodwin here. I mean Minnesota Beats. Out Clayton Iowa State Maryland Auburn for Gotcha Services. He played the past two seasons at Utah, coming off a season where he averaged ten point, seven point, three point, six rebounds, and two point nine assists most notably rose to fame when you and I both failed in about seven different pronunciations unexpectedly as he came up during a December episode of the eye on college basketball podcast, but he has become. Quite beloved in a short period of time legitimately can be a really good player for Minnesota. This is the third transfer. For Richard Pitino in this offseason. They also got western Michigan Transfer. Who will be immediately eligible brandon, Johnson, and then there's A. There's a good freshman guard coming in David Mustaf, who should who's from Turkey who should be pretty good as well? Jamal Mashburn Junior is going to head into the program so I'll tell you this. I mean Daniel to route to me. When he wore Minnesota uniform last season was one of the fifteen best players in college basketball. Booth, gotch can be one of the ten best players in college basketball in Minnesota uniform. You're from now if he so chooses teams also GonNa Bring Back Marks. Car GABE CAL sheer hope I'm getting that right and Trey Williams. Minnesota needs to be better. I think it will be better I don't know if it's GonNa. Be a year from now or two but I had I listen and full transparency. I insisted we do this podcast here. Okay, because it's booth, gotch. Biggest news of the week as far as I'm concerned in college basketball I. Don't see how we top this little question I have for you perish. Is I know Minnesota wasn't in your top twenty, five and one I assume version. What nineteen point I was going to be coming out on Tuesday. I must say what Minnesota from unranked to seventeenth eighteenth. Are you going to hold off even though Gosh might not? Not Be eligible I'm just wondering if there's influence on this roster scout team, and all that stuff might be enough for you to put Richard Patino team into the rankings. Here's what I would say. I I understand your skepticism about booth garage getting a waiver to play immediately at Minnesota, but I would say if Johnny. Jusin got one transferring back home to UCLA. Why wouldn the Homie Gawk get? One, at Minnesota. That's a very valid point. I consider that goofing around When I would, I reached out to people connected to the juicing situation as Joe First, congrats, secondly, how'd you get done so quickly? It wasn't just that choosing got waiver. It was like you got a waiver in like early. June or late, May, I mean it was a really sometimes. He's players waiting for waivers like the seats and started. Started and like they're still I'd nerd anything and to get one done that early. How you get a dog. And what I was told was it's was the easiest waiver request ever. You've got a young man on the other side of the country, wanting to move home to be close to his family during a pandemic. How was it ended up going to deny that one? It's like okay and if you apply that same. Logic to booth Gotcha. SCITUATE I would I would actually assume that he will get a waiver play immediately and to answer your question at that point I got bad news for I you. Look, there's a new favorite. There's a new paper to the big ten. GOPHERS. got.

Speculations increases that Cole Anthony might not play again in college

"So there's growing speculation that Kohl Anthony will not play at North Carolina again. Norrland not sure if you saw it. But here's what our friend and former colleague Sabatini wrote for the athletic earlier this week about Injured lottery picks is co Anthony. lamelo ball in Hampton after spending time in Las Vegas around dozens of NBA people sambo quote the feeling among NBA evaluators. Waiters is that injured guards. Coal Anthony Lamelo ball and RJ. Hampton aren't going to play the rest of the season. It's worth stressing that no final decisions have been made by those players. I and thus it's possible. They will still play scouts and executive. Don't know that Anthony won't suit up again for North Carolina or that Bala Hampton won't play again in the NBA. I'll rather it's. They're working expectation that they're not going to get to see them again. Given their contextual situations the using logic because North Carolina's team around Anthony has struggled with no uh-huh floor spacing and a cluttered lane around him every time he drives into the pain. NBA executives believe that does around. Anthony will stress to him that it's not worth returning that will be especially true if North Carolina loses a lot of games in his absence against a week schedule and this takes itself out of the tournament. Picture norlander do you. I think we've seen coal anthony for the final time in North Carolina uniform. I'll be direct and I'll say no but I had this thought think I expressed only previous podcast if UNC goes on to have significant issues in the ACC and can't even keep its head above water. Call Anthony Projects even with this injury. I won't say universally but a top five pick is completely mm within reality if he does not play again and it would not stunned me. It'd be it'd be a major development element in that you would have in the same season for what I have to believe. Is the first time ever in college. Basketball Ascot Ball to top five level picks in college for eligibility injury. Whatever opting to bail on their college careers to not return and pursue a pro opportunity trinity? which is the which is the? It's like the college bowl. College players sitting out the Bulls taken to to the sixth degree. Basically where it's one thing where if you've been a junior senior in college football you're playing some forgettable bowl on December twenty ninth ninth New Year's Eve or whatever and you're just like I'm Gonna I'm GonNa pack it in here. I'M NOT GONNA chance injury if I think I'm going to be first second or third round pick. It's completely understandable. Aw I would endorse any player that wants to do that. Frankly it's a whole nother level if you are a coal Anthony Type James Wiseman type and you you decide. I'm just GONNA shut it down altogether and simply not returned to competition and GonNa take the stock where I have it right now and hope that my April and May workouts are going to Either steady me or boost me to to a certain spot in the draft so I won't be stunned if it happens. I'm going to say that will not happen. Only because because he's a truly like fierce competitor. I think that he will be better. He'll we'll be back in time to still want to give it a go out that this is GonNa sit well with him having his career kind of sputter out the way that it has. So Oh he's he's nine games deep into a career. I think he'll be back. He'll be playing for Carolina this season and long-term projection is this and we can do a offer. Type flashback if we need to but I'll say that he'll return and one of the most compelling storylines in college basketball when he does return will be if he can be healthy enough and good enough to get an UNC into the tournament. I would lean that way as well. I do think there's two things that would make him less likely to to return or unlikely to return one would be if you just not healthy enough. And if he's not healthy enough. You shouldn't return. That's like you know like this. and He is worth millions of dollars and playing playing at anything. Less than one hundred percent would be foolish. So if he's not healthy enough to return then he won't return shouldn't return anybody trying to criticize him for that would be It'd be misguided criticism the other thing that I think could play a role as you mentioned ballgames for football players. Will you know they don't these football players. They don't sit the College Football playoff. They sit out the cotton bowl and they sit out the Birmingham Bowl and they sit out the liberty bowl but they don't sit out the the games that actually mean something something and so if you want to you know. Make perhaps apples to oranges comparison but still something similar still fruit to fruit I. If coin returns in North Carolina has just lost so much before. He's able to come back that he would be coming back not to try to get North Carolina to the tournament the try to get them to the nit like we're just crystal clear you're not. You're not taking this team to the tournament. At that point. You could go if I'm not playing playing for any. I'm not playing for a trip to the tournament. What am I playing for? Like if you're in Alabama running back and you're playing for a trip to the account coll- to the national championship game. That's worth playing for even if you're a top ten pick if you're just gonNa go to the fiesta. A A different bowl. Anything outside of the College Football playoff. Perhaps that's not worth playing for. I think coli Anthony's approach could be similar if if I can come if if this team is holds it together well enough that I can come back and we can beat Duke twice beat Louisville and go to the tournament. That's worth playing for but but coming back to just play out a schedule that's leading the nowhere because the image to the resume was so significant in my absence that we can't get to the tournament then. I think you could reasonably argue. It's time it's time to just clock out. That's why I think his situation is vastly different than James Wiseman situation. I mean if coal as that he comes back to take North Carolina to the IT. He's just a great talent who played at North Carolina. Like who cares but why has been in theory was set to rejoin the top ten team. And you know if you take memphis to a final four. You're a legend forever in Memphis emphasis. You know they don't have the history of North Carolina or Duke or Kentucky. You any Memphis Fan can can tell you that the starters from all three three final four teams. There's never been a national champion. So you got a chance to go do that. And what is a wide open year to walk away from that I still think is just just just odd and I don't think that he would be walking away from that. So it's why I guess I bought them on it this way. I would understand if North Carolina goes three and five in its next eight games and Co Anthony's cleared to return and he says but you know the numbers are so bad at this point. We're not GONNA be able to get to the incidentally tournament. I'm just going to focus on my pro career. I would understand that a lot a lot a lot more easily than then I can understand James Wiseman walking away when he walked away I would to. UNC seven and five and next four games are at home. The road is after that or pit in Virginia tech I understand. UNC's serious down swell here but I do think that it will be instantly good enough spot. Where provided there there are no further setbacks and you know it's an it's an MC L. It's it's not insignificant by any means? Let's he's gotta get fully healthy here. They're not gonNA put them back on the floor until he is one hundred percent you know. Make the parallel almost to design Williamson. Obviously obviously Except signed Williamson is now being handsomely. Paid and company is not yet I do think the Carolina I'm Projecting Carolina will be still within reach of the tournament by the time he was able to come back. And so that's what will make Make that happen. But we'll wait and see obviously get investments on that story will continue to update up to you talk about it and see where we go from there.

They are killing people and now again again number. One Akin no not even close to not even close. Maybe that's a little too thick but Yeah Jordan Stat. I re tweeted. We did that on Saturday. That's that's a really really good one And in light of what the Buckeyes were able to do. Just wipe the floor with Penn State thoroughly and I you know that was a secondary TV game. But I did have it on. And then it was extremely impressive and Caleb Western has been the star of the team to this point in the season but you know as we mentioned on the On the Friday podcast they do have more than just him and digit carton is really coming. He's coming into his own I I like so much of what he's been able to do. So yeah I mean this is the best when I said that it was the best team in the big ten. And you said are you gonNA pretend like mark turgeon doesn't exist. You remember when that happened. I vaguely remember that. Yes and then remember how Maryland should've lost at home to Illinois and really had. We're not going to dedicate anytime on this podcast. That game because it was hideous Maryland had no business beating Illinois. Did you happen to catch any of that game. By the way they were down. Big Big big and I was stressed out because have a real impact on the twenty one but then a Anthony Cowan got going down. The stretch in Maryland escapes win is a win is a win win is a win and I am. I am driving the Cowan bus as you. Well know and on that note I was happy to see it but but Maryland Illinois will get their due in time to come but yeah that just reinforced my belief that right now Ohio state is clearly The best as team in the big ten and according to some metrics operating as the best team in college basketball right

"Matt norlander said, I know the smack office tomorrow is Jeff in Richmond going to call. I don't know. He said, how about that guy? We talked about, Andy pets is Andrew. Pettit trying to burn through eyebrows. Stopping windshield. Go out local points. Figure out who to harass the duck. Okay. I don't think he's going to call if he does all put them on. Or I'd say this is it here. We are here we are smack off eve, the last show before the big show tomorrow is the day, the main event, the silver anniversary smack off twenty five no doubt. It's going to be the deepest, and most jammed up field of all time because of that. I'm not gonna have a single second tomorrow to school any of you up, how to take the listening and viewing experience to the next level. So listen right now, I'm not doing this tomorrow. This is it if you're not on Twitter already. I find that hard to believe, but I know some of you are not now is the time it takes maybe five minutes. Maybe create an account follow me right now at jimrome make sure to fire up tweet deck dot com. It's tweet deck dot com at my handle to a call him because tweet deck automatically polls, every tweet that I am mentioned in and it puts it right in front of you. Why is that so important? Because it will give you the chance to interact with every clone who is listening to and watching the smack off and tweeting about it. You can see what everybody else's scoring or how they're scoring it and what they're saying and what the reacting to then you can jump in on that conversation yourself. What I'm saying is this make the smack off a two screen event at a layer of live interaction to it score. It tweet about it. Talk about it freaking hashtag it again. The official hashtag is hashtag smack off. That's it. Hashtag smack off. It's easy. We're not putting a number on it. We're not attaching a Roman numeral to it. I'm keeping it simple route to get this thing trending. So people are talking about it. And they know the only way that doesn't happen is, if you start to muck it all up, and you change up with different hashtags. You've heard it here the official hash. Tomorrow is hashtag smack off not smack off twenty-five, not smack off x x v. Just hashtag smack off same thing goes for Instagram. Remember, if you had to watch party tomorrow, make sure you roll video uploaded to your Instagram feed hashtag it. Hashtag smack off our team in New York, the TV team is looking tomorrow, for those clips, they will turn the best clips around for live simulcast. But you can't do it. We can't do it. They can't do it if the account is set to private make sure that for those three hours anyway, you set it to public. And then hashtag, it smack off hashtag smack off all the information for the nine watch parties that, I know about is posted at the top Twitter feed right now, sell for the names of the venues locations, the phone numbers, go, check that out on Twitter. I pinned it. And finally, if.

"It is a big night for those folks. Matt norlander is my guest Matt good. Have you back? How are you? them it's great to be back in before we start talking i just got a mentioned something real quick off the top it was about eleven twelve years ago when i was working in a humble weekly newspaper office and i kill time during the afternoon working in connecticut i listened to the jim rome radio stream and it was then it was then that i i heard a smack off and so i've been a listener ever since i know we're on the eve of a massive event here so good luck tomorrow can't wait to listen to get it on the podcast there and is jeff richmond going to be a part of this because if he is i mean my money's on him i hope that he gets involved somehow that's that's like a top caller in the show history so do we know the status of jeff in richmond mamane you know for a fact how much i like you how much i respect you how proud i am a you for coming up the way you have what have you heard a smack off since those eleven years ago no kidding yeah he's in he's in but he was in last year and he called in didn't get on the air so i'm not sure as a smack off champ he is invited but he is not I'm calling lately, man. I'm not sure what to expect. And those would say is going to call he's going to make the same call that he made twenty years ago when he won. That's fine. If it's not him, then I want the legendary guy from Boston who talked about Andy Pettitte, nostrils, like we've got to track down that guy 'cause that's like, I cracked up. You're so right. Man. You I so appreciate the thoughts. I'm glad you found that you'll back then tomorrow is the big day in really appreciate you saying, thanks so much, or so big night for you. There's no doubt that time Williamson is going to be the first pick tonight. Matt, just how high is ceiling. In other words, we talking about an all star in all NBA player. And if so how quickly. Yeah. He's got a really high ceiling if we want to be realistic about this as possible. His feeling I think is top twenty player in NBA history. We're talking feeling. Not not. Absolutely. What they'll be? But if you felt what he didn't college, and if you combine his marketability, the megawatts mile, the talent the fact that we haven't had much buzz around the player heading into a draft since LeBron James, and before LeBron James who was, like, we've had maybe five players ever. If you can tap into the all that avoid injuries are concerned about, you know, his body type the way he plays if he prone four years from now to have his eases go on him to blow on him. No one wants to see that. But he's just so heavy, and so he has no comparison like, Shawn Kemp might be the closest thing. And even he's not that kind of close overall so tonight it's going to be all about vying, Williamson as it should be. But I think the draft will be known for that for the top three for him and John Moran and RJ Barrett. And then I think you're gonna see a slew of trades. Gonna it'll be interesting for NBA fans because don's the big story. What does he say you know what do we go through with here? What New Orleans but New Orleans has that fourth pick him. Did they trade it out of it or were they good with Lonzo ball and might they take your Culver hunter, there's a lot of fascinating things there because it'll be about die on, and then what you put around him because now he becomes obviously one of the biggest stars in the NBA, because he was he I would argue that he was the biggest story in basketball for the past eight months. How often how often does that ever the case where a college basketball player is the biggest thing in all about all levels of basketball season? Dying applied there and stuff into the league will be one of the biggest things for decade running problems point, Matt, norlander joining us, he's part of CBS sports HQ's live draft coverage. And again, that gets away at ten P PM eastern. Mount. You mentioned John Morand. Let me ask you about that. Because the expectation is, of course he'll go. Number two. You have been all over him for quite some time before we talk about his game at the next level Zion was a guy who had. Amazing hype for years any lived up to it. Maranto nearly went undiscovered. How do you explain that? What happened? Well, it's kind of an explicable and down with Josh that parents and family about that and his story, so well told at this point, if anyone happens to think that that's not millionaire with it. I mean he was not. He was not highly recruited. He went to a tuna you tournament, and they separated kids at the start of it and said, okay, we think you're good enough. You're going to be in the main gym all your other guys. I don't over there, the other gym, or no one's gonna be paying any attention, and it was then assistant at Murray state who just because he wanted MAC. He was hungry he stopped in and he's drama rent dominating three on three drills. And thanks. This kid might actually be something. It's fascinating to me how he has made this job, because I talked to Murray, say, coach Matt McMahon at the end of drama rants freshman year and I said, listen, if they're possibilities, their potential that, you know, if he was really good at off more. He might be able to, to leave after two years Murray state put in point guard, you know, campaign, I think Hanan and now you got drama rent, the, the program is actually established itself is sort of a mid major point guard do. And he told me he had met, we have got significant interest already from NBA teams right now. And up the time this is off the record. But here we are now he said, listen, John rent is ninety nine percent leaving for the day after a software, and if he wants to being a lottery pick on telling you, it will not be shocked whatsoever credit Matt McMahon. Mary because before he blow up as a sophomore well before that he thought that he had a legit lottery talent on offense. And as we turn out. See become a top player and a rare case of a mid major point guard going top three then MBA draft. We almost never see that guy's amazing. Like we're rolling beat role CBS sports network. And I'm listening to you and I'm watching the video. Just absolutely amazing. How explosive this guy is how unique he is. And then the wisdom has been that New York, we'll take RJ Barrett. Number three, there have been some questions about his game recently, especially when it comes to being compared to Zaire on in your opinion. How fair is that and those questions not fair at all. And in fact, if you hear any sort of talk about how RJ Barrett was overshadowed at two. Overlooked undervalued. It's if the crock it's not true whatsoever. RJ Barrett set the ACC freshman scoring record nuts. Do cress from scoring record the ACC freshman, scoring record Don Williamson. It's all of those games in February going into March with RJ Barrett leading the team maintain that number one seat seats. In fact, the number one overall seed was fantastic score. Remember, a year ago had we've been talking on on draft day and said, okay. Look forward to twenty nineteen did Barrett was in near consensus forecast, number one pick the fact that he drops the three is no big indictment on him or his game whatsoever. I think he's ready and tailor-made score at the level immediately. And I don't think there are any sure things in this draft. And I would define a short thing as multiple future all star even Zeile Willie Williamson if I don't, I don't necessarily think you Bank that, if you had to bet your life on it, I wouldn't bet that, but I think there is the second guy Belo's I on that I think is most likely to be a multiple time all started because he's crap. Eighty south walking can get into the lane well-suited well from deep, and I think that he is going to walk into a situation New York, where he will be set up to thrive and it'll be sitting, and he is. I know he is ready. I think that you will see when we look up first second week of November, Jim, we're gonna notice immediately RJ Barrett making impact on the game for his team similar to what Luca dodgers did for Dallas, Matt norlander joins me for another moment. Or so we know he's ready. In fact, we know the first three already but the thinking spin that this is in effect a three player draft. How accurate is that assessment? I think this is my least favorite talking point of the calendar year so far. Okay because it's never only a two player three player four player draft. It's that's because the only reason why this has come up is because it has been a consensus worth Diane than jaw than RJ. You almost never get that going into draft where it's weeks ahead of time months ahead of time. The one the two of the three in order are. And so, because of that, at the lazy talking point that we fall back on guarantee a guarantee, you look, up to three years from now there's going to be two or three second round from this draft is going to be four or five guys pick between ten and thirty in the strap that are going to be starting level NBA players. The trick obviously is identifying and not just that, but I think the one thing about the draft that does not ever get talked about enough, what NBA general managers and talent evaluate what they're trying to do with these guys can all play basketball. Can you do not get to the level where you're twenty draft pick and you're going to be a bus? No, it's about alchemy about who you are the person the skill set. You have the exact situation you go through the city that you moved. There are all of these elements that have to click in order for you. To be successful NBA player because they're only so many roster spots are only been affecting place, just because some guy got might get picked eighteen and wind up having ten times the career, some guy that goes eight it doesn't mean necessarily that the guy that was eight was doomed to fail. He just wound up going to the raw situation. So I'm always fascinated to see which players get picked to which franchises and are they allowed to develop, you know, I've had a couple of coaches specifically talk to me about how they hope there guys go to certain franchises over others because with an NBA circles and within college basketball circles certain franchises have better reputations in some areas and other specifically pertains to Claire development. So keep an eye on that as well. I sometimes think we just completely dismiss these guys and reputations in the Smith. How good they work coming into the draft. When in reality, it's very much about the situation. They walk into hell coaching staff sets them up for success, my CBS calling Matt norlander joining us right now about one last thing bowl bowl is one of the more polarizing players in the draft. You have him going to Boston. And number twenty two some made the case if you were healthy all season long, he would have been one of the first guys off the board. How do you balance his potential with the concerns about his health? That's the great balance there. And I've got him going to Boston because Boston have three picks I think if they guarantee they trade, at least one of those six, and if they don't trade it with Volvo wind up wrapping him. He's the kind of gamble that they can take but math and concerns on the defensive end concerned about health overall concerns about how much he really wants to play the game loves to play the game. Obviously, most people listen to remember how interesting has father was..

"I was so thrilled to join and be a team that if my job had entailed standing on the sideline and picking up the scrunched up Gatorade cuts. I would have been thrilled or so if you were talking to a young Amy Trask right now or you were talking to somebody who just starting out right now. You were talking to somebody who's making a big change right now. What would your advice be? Well, I would give three pieces of advice to someone starting out if the question came from a young woman, which often they do my first piece of advice would be gender-specific, when I'm asked, what should a young woman due to advance in her career point one stop thinking about the fact that you're a woman if you don't want others thinking about your gender? It makes no sense to think about your gender. If you wanna go into a business setting and have gender, not be an issue. Don't make it an issue. So point one is gender specific. Stop thinking about your gender to is gender neutral work hard, hard work matters. It really, really matters. And when you think you can't work any harder. Find a way to work harder, Jim. I know you've done that your whole career. I can't tell you the number of times sitting in my office, people walk in and say, you know, how do we get a job like yours. And I say, well, you know, this when you get here in the morning, Mike. Cars already here. And do you notice when you leave at night? My car is still here, hard work matters. And the third piece of advice goes right to the heart of what you asked tonight, own self be true. My biggest moments in my view have come when I've been true to myself, and my biggest failures, and stumbles and fumbles have been when I tried to be something or someone I'm not. Amy Trask NFL analyst for CBS sports spent nearly thirty years as executive with the Oakland Raiders shairman of the board of the big three league, author of you to go. She ate like a girl and remember the big three kicks off against Morrow night, this time eight PM eastern on CBS. Amy, you and I have had a lot of conversations over the years. But none better than that. You back. It was that good Amy. You were that good for having me on the eve of your smack off. You are top of my mind. Good luck with that. I have been a Jim Rome fan since the inception of our respective careers. And I will remain Jim Rome fan forever. The best mutual respect. I appreciate in Meyer. You very very much gore. "Welcome back. I'm Jim Rome. All right. So we joined right now by somebody who is actually at the airport was in line with security stepped out to do this. He covers college basketball for CBS sports dot com. He's co host of CBS sports. I on college basketball podcast front of the program. And a man who gets prominent screen time at every final four with his. Custer is for lovers laptop. It's gonna Matt norlander. Matt what's going on? How are you? The trying to keep it together. Upon you might not get it. But I can drop another three or four and before we or we end the interview with you and more than happy and willing to step away from the security line here. I'd rather busy Minneapolis court. Nice job. Appreciate you. Thank you very much. Or I take me back woods last night's game before before tip off. It was all that doom and gloom. But how crappy that game was going to be about? What were your expectations going into the game? Well, my expectations were a an entertaining game. But I actually had winning fifty nine fifty six though, what's incredible about what we saw was. There was. Yeah. There was some discussion about the fact that you know, there wasn't megastars wasn't the title game. People would have expected a month ago. It didn't involve do or even Tennessee or Kentucky or North Carolina or any of these teams that were playing so well that you know, a lot of people rooting for. But in fact, the matter is they've rated top five to call. It basketball retains rate is the best team in college basketball for most of the season. So given that Tetra tech defense dork, and they still had good athlete play makers. Oh, by the way to. And I expected it to be a good game. But even then it outstripped expectations caused basketball's on a great. They're like in the past eight national title game. I've been good to great downright epic. And I think last night qualified for the top ten championship game or three by with you not norlander joining us now part of the perception that it might not be a great game. Matt as you point out was that the weren't actual household names. But you did have at least two top ten picks on the floor last night. Let me start with you Andre hunter. What do you make of the way he played on both ends? Fantastic. We're getting a little bit about how that came with early. It was three hundred media time out that first one nine hundred with a little bit of a no show again. But the way he stepped up twenty seven points, a career-high, I think he actually solidified, and I'm not saying this is right or wrong. But go into last night game, you know, talked to MBA guys between him or Culver fifty fifty. A coin flip the cough up. I do think that the way that he played throughout and on Culver. It's gonna wind up with him getting picked before called in the upcoming draft. But it was just it was awesome for him. And the kind of guy gets the gets the mop the MVP. I mean, I'll I'll I voted for hunter. But between him Jerome guy that was the best game collectively that's real had played all season, Jim. And it came at the time they needed it most there, and they reinforce something. I had been writing about saying about for most of the season that was the best three. Oh in college basketball. It was better than any combination. You wanna give me the Duke freshman three of the four guys Jerome Unser guy had been so reliable. Good. All season, and they stepped up in a huge moment. They had I think all five of Virginia's feel overall last night. So the one hundred three it's another big time moment, and I just can't get over the fact that this Regina championship has the absurd ending in Louisville without air for for the day, Auburn, which is nearly a third down by three hundred hits the three with what thirteen seconds to go. I can't remember team ever needing that amount of for to just being cosmetically kicked away for did. And it makes it all the story. All the more incredible all the more special, and frankly, you cannot find anything in the history of American ports that matches what Virginia's down year over year when you look at the UNBC and them coming back and winning thirty five out of thirty eight games, really strong statement. And I can't say that I disagree with that. Matt norlander is my guest as an example, they had Matt one amazing moment after another in those last three games as you point out Purdue Auburn Texas Tech moments where they could afford it. But didn't so based on your conversations with people around that. Program people around Tony Bennett how much of that goes back to last year and the loss to you NBC. Twenty of it. I mean, real quick here. I had a chance to have some good conversations with laurel Bennett. Tony's wife in Louisville. And then here in Minneapolis. And one thing that I don't think a lot of people realize after the UNBC Lafayette, Tony had the the great interview about the end in the arena. And when you step it, anything happen and all that. But you know, the players they were brought back at their team hotel. They were snuck in through side door. There was a whole big circus with all of that. And then they they all were brought to their rooms individually by police officers, and it made the whole thing that seem all all the worst. And so in the days and weeks after that Tony laurel had a lot of conversations about what the loss was. How would it would not affect them? How it wouldn't help define what Virginia was now from the outside looking in and always with going to and in light of the victory. It actually becomes and make the story even better that somehow even possible, but the resolve the players had guys been open about his is anxiety and some of the issues that he's had them from that loss. It has helped to fine. A story that is to the real for any movie and really to documentary. You know, those are coming the documentaries. The book the way the team handled everything that season not just winning like Jim this was easily. I I understand that Duke beat them twice. But every metric has said Virginia's the best team in college basketball, four months since a come back from that. And then win the title of the way. They did. It is unreal. I I believe it happened, but still on a certain level, man. Like, they should have been out after the sixteen yet they somehow few questions him push through push through Matt norlander joining us and back to that point one last time out. I mean, it's one thing to lose to sixteen. It's one thing to suffer that kind of humiliation in pain, but they didn't just lose to a sixteen. They got hammered by sixteen and then as you point out within one year they've ounce back to win the whole thing. What's that say about Tony Bennett as a leader? I mean so much I said last year when they lost. There was no coach that was better equipped mentally handle that defeat in the entire sport in the Tony Bennett. I mean, he he was incredible with that. And he he brought kind of perspective because as you would expect them like the every press conference not everyone just about everyone in the tournament. You have a UNBC question authority and a couple of times the questions, frankly, they got a little melodramatic talking about like historic loss. Tony was like listen, it's just a game. Like there were there were times his wife was telling me last year where people like did you go into a dark room and just very yourself away for three days, and it was like no like there are so many actual real world problems die or issues like yeah. From from a career perspective. It's under Tori. It's an infamous laws, but we're gonna be just fine. We're gonna have our faith, and we're going to be his faith in God really played a major part in that he's an extremely religious, man. And actually, I'm sure the cameras caught. That last night, obviously, the broadcast, but when the when the game hit triple zero after one overtime ended Bennett, you just kind of dropped his head. You know, he stood there for that. They're on the field for a moment and eventually coach came over and hugged him. And I talked to him after what about the game about that? Said I was just giving thanks to the man of their, you know, I don't know why we had to go through what we went through. But I I don't know if I deserved it. But I I had to give thanks in that moment for for something that that'd be a part of something. Incredible very humble, very deserving. He's been regarded the top coats and college basketball for a few years now. But I don't think title is necessary to validate that but validated will nonetheless. And. Yeah, Virginia's one incredible story. Right. And we could still though that garbage about how this guy's system does not work where he can't coach in the tournament because he proved that he can win last map for let you go various outlets now reporting that Mick Cronin to UCLA is official and it's going to happen. But a snap reaction. How do you feel about that fit for him? And for them. That I think is a good fit for him. You like going to be frustrated I'll get a quick autumn. Make as for the search. Search has been a disaster. The the opening came on New Year's Eve when they got rid of Alfred, and they had the interrupts that situation and they've had so many guys that down the job so much has leaked out. It has not been handled. Well, Dan grill, the director tried to get a big name after big name after big name failed consistently. Mick cronin. You know, what he's only one six coaches tonight three and terminates the problem that you feel like you're going to have made one sixteen in that run. But he's not he's not media. Verse coca the a really effective them. It's not like, by the way, it's not like it. But it could be for UCLA to a certain degree. What Ben has been Virginia. So I think that that the potential marriage could work well for Mick, you know, to leave Cincinnati would net. It's not going to be easy for him. It was going to take a job like UCLA. And I think there's there's good. Potential there. But I think he's also if it's unfair. But I think he's going to be behind the eight ball it's a little bit. Because of how long does their stuff because everyone knows that. He wasn't the first second third or fourth joy. We'll see how that winds up turning out. But that's I believe I'm talking not my head, Jim. But I think that's the last big job to open a college basketball at least for now. Matt norlander senior writer CBS sports stepping out of security to join us on the way back home that really good to have you on. Thanks so much a great job as always. Thank you Sam. And remember got their lovers. Gusta is for lovers, bro. It absolutely is. Whatever the hell that means nine. That means gust or is for lovers. It's on his laptop Matt norlander did a great job. All right. When we come back UCLA fans. Mick Cronin was not first choice. Not even the second choice or maybe third choice. But is he the right choice? I like it. I'm a big Mick Cronin guy. I like it. But I agree that search it self help any worse than it was bad looks all the way round. But they finally get their guy was switch up though when we come back. We're talking baseball. Tyler Kettner is a national columnist for the New York Times. We'll talk baseball team, then we're wide open until hour number three..

"Welcome back to the island. College basketball podcast when we sometimes discuss Campbell fighting leaks. Black Matt norlander is here with me. I want to open up big twelve because an interesting past two days in the big twelve on Monday night, Baylor went to Oklahoma and one by thirty by thirty to extend its winning streak to five games. Scott clues bears now five into the league tie with Kansas state and only Kansas state atop the big twelve standings. That's because Kansas law seventy three sixty three Tuesday night at Texas. So the jayhawker now sixteen and five overall five and three in the big twelve. But even more concerning is KU is now just four and four since you as a bookie suffered a season ending hand injury. And they're just one in five in road games on the season. So let's start here. Norlander? You have consistently said you will not pick anybody other than canes in the big twelve until K you string of at least share of fourteenth straight big twelve titles as broken, but right now Keynes's tied for third the big twelve standings, the jayhawks trending in the wrong. Direction and Kim Tom currently projects Iowa State to win the league outright and snap. K you streak question. Are you ready to abandon Bill self? Are you ready to say Kay you streak of big twelve titles? It's coming to an end question. Where's your Iowa State picked in the league? Answer. I'd have given possibly remember something answer. I know it was six I had him second-half doing good morning. I can't believe it's been three days as we had a podcast this week is flying by I will not abandon my band in my post. I'm still going to stick with this. I am still let me I think this is the language I've used in the past, but I will make it crystal clear as we start this Wednesday podcast. I will not pick Kansas to not finish atop the league standings in the big twelve until it doesn't. There have been a couple of instances over the past fourteen years where they finished atop the leaks endings and actually shared a regular season title with a couple of other teams. I think that outcome is actually now most likely I'm not gonna give up on this this not gonna Bandon it. And as as you're mentioning this. I was thinking about it yesterday. Because I knew he talked about this earlier in the season. I I refused to abandon Villanova. And then I feel like you kind of talk me into abandoning Villanova. And now, look what's happening. So the same thing is applying here, I know in the aftermath of losing a road game, Texas. It's feeling like it's never been this much jeopardy for Kansas. Maybe that's true. But I got to see it to believe it. And I also think big twelve big picture wise, I'll get to Baylor in a second. But on throwback to you first big, picture wise. The big twelve I don't think the winner is going to get out of this without at least five losses at least five right now Baylor in K state have to Texas Tech which is balancing back. Nicely has three Kansas three in Iowa State has three I would say, it's even relatively possible. Maybe not likely, but if we if we look up we see three teams wind up finishing with five losses atop the standings. And if that indeed this happen, I think you're going to have some people out there that are going to refute the Kansas fifteenth street years, but the record really is consecutive years finishing atop the league standings in the regular season tie or no tie. I won't give up yet. And. With Kansas if you can take now it's easier said than done in Texas was able to do this to a certain degree. Thanks in part to Jackson Hayes who is a raw talent. But if he wants to leave after one season, he will leave and he will be first run traffic guy like him on the floor, certainly had an impact. And you can't get anything else consistent there. They didn't even start legit Vic last night. Oh, Ty Balji started. And he was actually he was he was fairly decent. But there's not they're not getting enough around him. They're just not getting enough help overall. And so how I wonder playfully wondering yet. I know there will be some heavy cynics out there will Silvio Susa be ruled eligible or not in the coming days here set Davis, our colleague at CBS,.

"But I think the same question posed and and Michigan state's subject, I think the answer is also yes, they were down bad on the road in a league game against a good team that can happen to almost anybody in the country. I'm not worried about Michigan state at all. Let's move on. So Tennessee has the longest winning streak right now. The vol's of one fourteen straight games, they beat West Virginia on Saturday. In Thompson, Boling they were down big early. And it was like is the number one team in the country on upset alert. And then they just ran away from West Virginia they handled on the way they were supposed to handle them six. No in the SEC right now trivia time norlander who has the second longest winning streak right now. Okay. It's so it's not LSU. It is LSU. He put that on t for me. I thought you were trying to reverse do, Jim. Yeah. They okay. So there you credit to them. And by the way, LSU getting away with a win at Missouri. Not they shouldn't have won the game. And then they pulled away in overtime that was a credit to them. But I thought Elsie was like the overly obvious answer. You might have been somewhere else. But yes, anyway, the reason I think it's an obvious answer to you. Because we do this every day. I wonder how many people listening actually knew the answer to that. Because LSU has been operating a little bit of the national radar. They were preseason top twenty five, but then they go down to Orlando to the advocate invitational. And they took a pair losses down there that just just weren't good. The first one was to to Florida state in OT nothing really wrong with that. But Florida state has I believe dropped out of the top twenty five at this point. Florida state has lost a bunch lately has lost three the last four heading into Sunday's game. Against a Miami. And so LSU lose that one. And then the real stinker was the next with two days later on Sunday, November twenty fifth they lose ninety seventy seven to an Oklahoma state team that is currently nine and eleven overall two and five in the big twelve and even though it was ninety eight seventy seven like the score was closer than the game. Oklahoma state just pounded them. So they get dropped out of the rankings. And they dropped all the way down to fifty. I at Kim palm. But they're playing well now they've won nine in a row, they're sixteen and three overall six in the SEC, and they don't have a signature win yet unless you count the win at ole miss immediately after omiss got ranked in the people, but like ole miss shown itself to not be top twenty five team since then I I'm comfortable predicting they'll drop out of the people on Monday and LSU hasn't yet. Played Tennessee Kentucky Mississippi. Date. But this team has gone from fifty first at Ken palm on December ninth to twenty fourth at can palm right now. They're number thirteen in the net. Let me ask you this. Do you put LSU in the top tier the SEC with Tennessee and Kentucky. Yes, I do. I think the team is is exceptional on defense. In fact, second in the country among power offers teams in steals per game trivia, who's number one among all power conference teams in steals per game. Perish in steals per game. Number one power conference team. I have no idea. I don't want to answer and say something stupid. So I'll just let you answer. All right by not answering. It's just a stupid. If you guessed. So I will give you the answer. It's Duke ten point five LSU is nine point nine per game. They excel in that area also thirteenth in the net rankings. They have in trending well in the instabilities official metric overall, listen.
