Suddenly, the Brisbane outbreak looks a lot more worrying

"Here in brisbane. At least nome. I mean snap. Three-day looked down which actively contradicts the headline that we had on yesterday's podcast episode. Does how does it feel. It's really weird to be back where we were coming into east last year like they've even close schools. My kids are going to be at high over the next few days coming into look and honestly a very selfishly considering what the rest of the world is dealing with. I really kinda thought we would have had this leaked by now like it's been more than a year. We've got vaccines like when are we actually gonna say them getting to the stage where we don't need to have a lock down because we're we're well covered by vaccination. Here's some people are saying. Well there be a lockdown or should they have done it earlier and the public opinion swings around a lot on this. And let's just take the the arguments for and against so. Let's just take yesterday's discussion just to justify ourselves in our existence. there's a good contact tracing system. They seem to be on top of it although there was this long gap between the medical registered getting of the princess alexandra and these new cases emerging so that's a lot of potential there for this to spread the did seem to be getting onto the didn't seem to be many cases and then what happened. What happened yesterday and it's unclear. What would have happened by the time. You're listening to this podcast. Krona cast war has emerged but it was just looking a little bit wild yesterday. Where you've got people who moved into new south wales who'd gone up to gladstone. Not being quite sure haven't tied down what has happened in terms of context context moving forward and therefore the logical thing to do was in fact just to lock down for two three days to contact. Tracers can chop hard. Though that

"Harper's magazine Harper's magazine has published a letter on Justice and open debate. And it's I mean, it's been signed by all the big wigs on the left, and some of the people like Steven Pinker Ah and Malcolm Gladwell, also on this, but Gnome Chomsky math. Gnome Frickin Chomsky is on this David from Gloria Steinem. And here's what the letter said. Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protest for racial and social justice are leading to overdo demands for police reform, along with whiter calls for greater equality and inclusion across the society. Not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy and the arts. But this heart's okay. But this Ah needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development. We also raise our voices against the second. The forces of ill liberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a really threat to democracy. But resistance must not be allowed to harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion, which right wing demagogues are already exploiting. The Democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has been set in on all sides stoop the intolerant climate. Because they use the word climate control. Would that be like The climate deniers should go to prison yet of their Holocaust deniers. Yeah, sure. Like that was just like, OK, All right. I just I'm just wondering while we've come to expect this of the radical, right, can you give me a place in the radical light right where you're Being silenced where you've lost your job. You've been silenced. By the radical right either radical, right? I can't really come up with anything Recent. At least I know I can. I could give you 100 names of people that have been silenced who are on the left and on the right by the radical left, But not one can I can I think of right now? I mean, occasionally there's things where the right pushes back on cancel culture type of stuff. Which I'm not a big fan of. I know Some people are where, like you go after Let's say Jimmy Kimmel or somebody else who's done an equivalent act as to someone else who didn't need to. They just got what they went after Jimmy Kimmel themselves that I mean, that's I mean, it's not the right going after Jimmy. They did, but he didn't get canceled for it. That's who I mean there. It's the left going after they're going after Gnome Chomsky. Yeah. I mean, they're going on a little Hamilton. I mean, come on. They're going after everybody. Can I tell you something? That is? That is so unbelievable. Hamilton. Hamilton. I'm I'm I'm not thinking that the people who wrote it produced did start in It are exactly conservative. No, I mean, can you remember Glen? The last story we heard about a Hamilton, which is only I, seemingly a few months ago. Was Mike Pence, going to Hamilton and getting booed in the crowd because he showed up to watch it. That's how conservative that production was. And now that's even being targeted. So now now the left is irritated at these people who wrote this in Harper's Bazaar. One of their political weapons is cancelled Culture. Driving people from their jobs, shaming dissenters and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees. This is the very definition of totalitarian ism. It is completely alien to our culture and our value mes values and has no place in the United States of America, who said that That Nome Chomsky was that Gloria Steinem? That was a Donald Trump Has Donald Trump that said that? Um, and they're upset because, well, J k Rowling was, you know, signed this letter to how dare you put your name next to J. K. Rowling. Because she's being canceled right now. Now, the only reason why she hasn't been cancelled already is because you know she's worth a $1,000,000,000 nobody wants because everybody knows. Yeah, go ahead. Please cancel her. Our publishing house will pick her up immediately. So they're not canceling her there, just canceling everybody else. Gillian Philip, who authors Kidsbooks has been dropped from the air in Hunter Book, Siri's After adding a hashtag to her Twitter profile in support of J. K. Rowling. She she used to write fictional book Siri's and short stories, focused kids, Tweens and teens. She's written a lot. But she put on her Twitter handle the hashtag. I stand with J. K. The worlds created by Air and hunter are meant to be inclusive for all readers, and we want to let you know that Gillian Philip will no longer be writing any of the 100 novels. Philip said, disappointed that the hard working professional attitude I brought to my work for HarperCollins and for working partners counted for nothing in the face of an abusive mob of anonymous Twitter trolls. Kind of, but she's out. Incredible. I legitimately incredible to watch this happen. It's it's it's. It's burning down the cultural society all at once. I thought this thought multiple times this past weekend, Glenn, which is you wrote your book addicted to outrage too early. You know, that book explains all of this stuff. This this is, you know, getting rid of our history of abandoning just the concept of actual people having A new agreed upon truth right, like the idea that we could just kind of come together and say, Okay, well, that's true. That's no longer the case. People are just making up their own truth. And now we can obviously point out examples with around the gender debate in all of these things, but you go through that and what's behind it in with postmodernism in that book, and it's like That while it was going on, then this era right now is eggs. It's exactly that I go back to that over and over and over again that is explained over and over in that book about how the basis of this and it's the way we're attacking these things, you know, like Abraham Lincoln being good. You know when it comes to helping African Americans Martin Luther King? I mean, Martin Luther King used to be the thing we would all come together and say, Well, of course, yes, you know, Ah, character is important. It's not skin color. That is no longer what they were arguing. You look over and over again, and they're not asking for equality there, not saying we should all ignore each other's skin color and just come together and be equal. That is not what they're asking for. Explicitly. They're not asking for that anymore. And you take away like a recent piece of history. Relatively With someone like King and abandon that thought completely. There is no agree upon. Truth at all. You know, it's what's really scary is the agreed upon truth that we used to have that we used to do remember We learned on 9 11 that no, not everybody really kind of felt like we all thought we kind of loved our nation. OK, 9 11 happened. We all felt that way. 99 12 happen and we all kind of gathered together. And then after you know what about a year you started realizing now there are some people that really don't like America. I am I was shocked then and I am shocked now. That on the same day, I want to play two pieces of audio. They both came out yesterday. This is the first piece of audio is from a Seattle City council member. I want you to listen to what she's saying to Jeff Bezos. And what she's saying about our system of government. Listen, I am a message for Jeff Bezos and his class. If you attempt again over John, the Amazon tax working people will go all out in the thousands to defeat you. And we will not stop there because you see we are fighting for far more than this tax. We are preparing the ground for a different kind of society. And if you want to drive that process forward By lashing out against us in our modest demands, then so be it because we are coming for you and your rotten system..

"Exploration is dangerous work. There are unknowns challenging landscapes severe weather to contend with, and that's just the tip of the iceberg at extreme locations or just factual, non metaphorical icebergs and everything gets much more difficult. Early. Expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic circles near the north and South Poles were some of the most incredible undertakings in history. Of course there were plenty of failures, but every time someone tried. It helps the people who came after. Learn a little bit more. By the early nineteen hundreds several different parties from many different places had succeeded in exploring the frigid areas and returning to tell the tale. Eight! Adele Tuck was born not too far from this brutal cold, She I opened her eyes in eighteen ninety in Alaska, not far from the city of nome, which is on the West Central Coast at one time. Alaska was known to Americans as seward's folly because Secretary of State William, seward purchased the land from Russia for seven million dollars in eighteen, sixty seven. People thought it was a terrible mistake and a waste of money, but when golden were discovered, there seward was like who's laughing now y'all seward's folly more like seward's stroke of genius that you all were super wrong about L. K. man. We get it. Anyway Alaska would still not even become an official US territory until Ada was a teenager, she was initiate one of the indigenous groups of people native to land. But growing up, she never learned the survival ways and traditions of her tribe. She was raised by missionaries people who moved to the area to set up a school in order to convert people to their religion. It's a circumstance that happened to many native Americans and as a result, many traditions were lost for generations some forever. In school eight learned to read and write English read the Bible and learned cooking and other domestic skills, the reading and writing served her well, but as you might have guessed in a story about exploration, these domestic skills would not go near as far in helping her as more traditional skills like hunting, tracking and survival might have. As a young adult! Sixteen! She married a man named Jack Black. Jiang. Yep. You heard that, right? Jack Black Jack. No. He was not a cartoon outlaw, nor was he a professional poker player. He was a dog musher hauling freight across Alaska on a sled pulled by dogs. Together! They had three kids. Sadly, only one survived a boy named Bennett. But one day, Jack Blackjack left the family high and dry. Up and left her in the middle of nowhere which in Frigid Alaska can be a pretty serious predicament. Though he was not the greatest of guys she did keep his greatest of names and earned her future fame as Ada blackjack. When Jack blackjack deserted her. She was forty miles from their home in known, and she and Ben Walked the entire way back in the bitter Alaskan cold to make matters worse than it was very sick with burke. And infection of the lungs, so ada quite a small woman carried the boy much of the way.

Are There Zombie Viruses Like The 1918 Flu Thawing In The Permafrost?

"Now we take you to the top of the world to the Northern Coast of Alaska where a cliff is crumbling and exposing ancient hunting site. There's another head back there. GonNa head right here head right their main body right here. Across the Arctic these prehistoric settlements are being unearthed. And the reason why is climate change as NPR's Mike Lean do cliff reports? Scientists are worried about something that could be lurking inside. These settlements Zombie pathogens up on top of an ocean. Bluff team of archaeologists is trying to pull off an emergency excavation. Here we have ribs and vertebrae other long bones. That's Dominique Tulu. Student helping to dig out hunting cabin. He's found a stash of animal bones at the other end of the house. Glenis on shows me where someone was storing fresh. Kills so this. Is this skin right here? At my feet are mummified seal. These seals are incredibly well preserved. You can see their skin their whiskers and this odsal paw. Oh Paul everywhere they dig. There's another surprise owing us. This is ridiculous. That's an Jensen the archaeologist leading the team they're out of coastal site near Ukiah that the town wants known as Barrow. They're rushing to save a piece of history before it falls into the ocean the cliff where the cabin is buried is going breaking apart because of climate change bird bird after bird after bird stack up in their skin. There there is the whole boy. Things are getting super stinky. The birds are thawing in rotting. That's right when students hands covered in black king bird flesh. Oh yeah hands. Oh my gosh. Oh now Johnson starts worrying about something. We can't see even flu virus. Oh norovirus yes. The team realizes there could be bird-flu hidden in these carcasses. You he all across the. Arctic climate change is causing the ground to warm soften like butter and there are a lot of things buried this ground. Not just animals but also their diseases tinkering take a rank colleen. You're GONNA drive yourself seriously. You need a break cooling. The major as a student she puts on gloves. Yeah you should probably do that hand. Because I mean a lot. Dunkin you at this point. In the excavation something even crappier happens. A human molar appears really human tooth. Now the site rat isn't a burial ground. There shouldn't be bodies right here but the two does make them pause because it reminds them that there aren't just animal diseases buried in the Arctic but also possibly human diseases. There are tens of thousands of bodies hidden in the Arctic permafrost. Jensen knows this better than anyone. I've gone a lot of burials. Yeah I've probably Doug as many variables was anybody. Some of the people buried up here. They died of smallpox others from the nineteen eighteen flu. Have you ever seen human remains like as well preserved as this seal? Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah. Yeah well the little the little frozen girl from rookie. Avic ARE NYACK. Yes she was. She was actually much better preserved than the seal. The little girl was just six years old. She was carefully wrapped in duct skin. Parka WITH A FUR-TRIMMED. She had this little sled with her. She died about eight hundred years ago. Water in around her burial I think and she was socialist. Basically encased in ice. We're able to take her out in a block of ice. Her body was so well preserved that Jensen shipped her to anchorage so doctors could do a full autopsy. One of those doctors was Michael's Zimmerman a paleobiologist at the University of Pennsylvania. I've done the number studies on frozen bodies in Alaska and when you open them up the organs role there and they're easily identified. It's not at all like Egyptian mummies where everything is shrunken and dried up. So it's easy to see what a person died up for the little frozen girl. It was starvation. But Zimmerman has seen infections embodies excavated from permafrost in one case a mummy from the Aleutian Islands. Looked like it had died of pneumonia and when he looked for the bacteria inside the body there they were frozen in time. We can see them microscopically in the in the lungs. There's this fear out there that once human bodies are exposed by melting permafrost. The pathogens in them could come back to life like Zombie pathogens. It's not unheard of anthrax. Can do it. It happened just a few years ago. In Russia a massive reindeer burial ground thought in the anthrax that killed. The reindeer woke up and started an outbreak. Were these new moon. You bacteria still alive. Zimmerman tested it. He took a smidge tissue from the lungs warmed it up fed it and tried to revive it. Nothing grew not one single cell though. I was happy because I didn't have to worry about catching anything. Zimmerman says he wasn't surprised. Bacteria were dead. Anthrax is a special case. In general bacteria that make people can't survive deep-freeze we're dealing with the organisms. That are hundreds of years old at least of the stuff. I work out of their frozen for hundreds of years and I really don't think they're ready to come back to life. I asked him if the same is true for viruses. I think it's extremely unlikely we've never been able to Culture any living organisms out of these bodies in nineteen fifty one a pathologist from San Francisco. Johan Halton decided to test this out. He went up to a tiny town near nome Alaska in dug up the bodies of five people who had died of the nineteen eighteen flu a virus that killed at least fifty million people Holton told. Npr Two thousand four that he cut out tiny pieces of the people's lungs and try to grow the virus in the lab. I hope that I would be able to isolate living virus. And they couldn't they ours is dead. And in retrospect of course maybe that was a good thing a good thing. But here's the crazy part. Holton tried to capture the virus twice. He went back to Alaska when he was seventy two. In Russian. Scientists like Holton have intentionally tried to revive smallpox from bodies in their permafrost. They recovered pieces of the virus but couldn't get that to grow either so maybe when it comes to Zombie Diseases. It's not melting permafrost. Me Need to worry about but what scientists are doing in the lab mike do cluff NPR news.

"And the graphics on this game are beautiful. Some of the best graphics. I've seen. I mean so far, the benchmark is still storm land. From insomniac, but this game looks fantastic. So what's really cool is that you play this hero. And then you kind of really does feel a lot like a like an action combat are PG. You've just like you would think it would explore the world and you walk around these different places, and then they'll be these totems, and you can go over, you can kind of infuse into the into the God totem, and then it will pull you way back in the world and kind of give you like a God's eye view, and so you can move around and you can see different levels. You can be like, oh if you're looking for a specific item for door like a quest point. You can kind of look around and see, like where you need to go, and how you can get there and puzzle solve. You know how you're supposed to get to that destination. Then you can go back down to your character model and then you're back in the world again. And it was a really cool mechanic. I'm going to look up a little bit more details about this game, but I mean, gave you get to play as low-key seems pretty cool tentative ten. Yes. Ten out of ten. So this game what I liked about it is that so much of it. And I don't know if it's because of all the four that I've watched recently because of the ventures or it's because of God of war that I feel so well versed in Nordic mythology, but there's all kinds of Nordic mythology tidbits sprinkled around the world. You're going to see a lot of characters that you recognize a lot of names. You're like, hey, I know that person and I just, I don't know. There's something about me that gets like super excited when I'm like, hey, I know that thing. Yeah. Familiarity is a real thing where you're like ooh. I know this, therefore I like it. That's a psychological thing. I'm so the combat is sword shield. So as you can imagine, you know, you're using your controller to swing at enemies in the world. Drawers, you know, you got skeletons that are coming and then you can sheath at your side. And then thankfully, if you drop it, you can re summit drop mice. And we're you're like, hey, why do I have to keep grouping this thing just be in my hand at all times? Yeah. And then there's little like secrets define like there was this Nome that I ran across. And he was like he kept asking for something to eat. Okay. So I went over and I found a crab walking around and I picked him up, and I brought him over to the Nomo's like crab, the gnome was like no I don't want. It's like no, no, no. It's first off still alive. I can't eat that, but yeah, and then it got even cooler after that. I was walking around the world. And I found what I was in God's view, I found a shark like stuck in a tide pool. And so I grabbed the shark and then it turned until a humanoid and it became I follow companion humanoid shark like magic a really beefy man. But with a shark head. Wasn't that Zelda? Didn't they have like weird fish people? Maybe. Oh, I know. I think I know what you're thinking of this is like a literal shark face with, like the teeth and everything guilt that eighth cartoon. There's definitely been shark men in the world of literature before. And I can't think of an actual named one such short. This. What are they street sharks? Okay. That's in Zelda. No, no eighties. Cartoon of humanoid sharks, where you're like, yeah, like really beefy bodies, but then like a shark head with the gills and all that stuff. Yeah. It was it was wild. And so he became my, my little follow companion. So when we were walking through this tomb trying to find this artifact he could send him to go attack enemies. I could send him to pull down lovers, so that I could cross bridges kind of like a little bit of co-op puzzle solving, and he had like the weirdest voice if funny. News like very much like a quintessential meathead just like I wanna go eat dump Dane. Right. Why do I have shark.

And then I would say there's a couple of other women in the house who are Republicans, don't talk about gender at all at a lot of them from conservative districts do not want to talk about this. Diane black. She's running for governor and Tennessee. She prefers to be called. Chairman, there's other women in the house are Republican who prefer to be called congressman, not congresswoman, so it's not something they wanna talk about. They don't want people to think it gives them a leg up. Whereas with Democrats, it's something they emphasize I and conversations because it does help them. Absolutely. We've seen, you know, as we've been tracking these primaries over the year, we've seen a pronounced interest among democratic voters and the people who fund these candidates in electing women specifically, there's been just a huge boost. In in among other places, Barbara Comstock district. She's gonna be running into democratic women, Mimi Walters running the democratic women, the across the map where we've seen this over and over is a very, very different allowed her feeling on the democratic side. You bring up a Wolters Mimi Walters in California, Republican, Orange County district has changed a lot more democrat, definitely honorable Republican. She has found for, for example, ways to try to reach out to women without blessing Trump. If you ask her about Trump, she's gonna praise him. She's gonna praise his policies. If you say, I don't like Trump tone toward women. She tells me she pivots right away. She pivots the legislation. She doesn't. She won't engage in that kind of conversation, but she is sensitive to this this notion that she needs to reach women's to win. And she has sort of gone about doing it in crafty way. Her first campaign ads, for instance, talk about bills. She has passed. Helping battered women and raped women, thirty two. I never thought someone would wanna.
