"Got a guest also recently returned from the LA all star scene. Fan graphs lead prospect analyst Eric long and Hagen, who is here to end grant frisbees one episode rain in sole possession of first place on the all time effectively wild guest appearance leaderboard, and also to talk about prospects and all star stuff. Hello, Eric. Hey, how's it going? It was very tempting yesterday to be. I was working on writing day two and three draft stuff up in the hotel as May was on with you and grants and Jeff and took every ounce of self control I had not to just yell a few things. Get on that episode one time. So the effectively wild wiki curators, I know that's very important to you. It is important for me to be Nadal and for grant to be Djokovic. Yeah. Right. I guess that makes sense. Wrestle carleton Roger Federer. I know grant was taunting you on Twitter earlier, which you probably didn't see. No, probably not. We're not looking at Twitter. Haven't tweeted since Marge buddy. Wait a little bit to check on that, grant. Your thoughts are for not if the tanti does not see them. So we have a lot to talk about. We want to talk about everything that went down in LA from the futures game to the draft to the All-Star Game to the home run Derby. I do have a couple non all star week related or at least not explicitly all star week related questions for you, Eric. And one I've been wanting to ask you for a while because we've seen a ton of top prospects promoted this season. It's been kind of cool to see them all come up. And the range of results is really wide. And in a Jason stark article earlier this season, Mariners AGM Justin hollander, who has been on the show suggested that what Bill James called the transition tax basically how long it takes prospects to adjust to the majors is as high as it's ever been. I wonder whether you think that's true. But I also wonder what you think it counts for the variability in that transition tax among players who have major league ability and are judged to be big league ready. For instance, you have guys who started slow, but subsequently turned it on, like Julio Rodriguez, who we will be talking about later, or Bobby witt, or adley Richmond, and then you have guys like Jeremy Pena or Nolan Gorman who hit the ground running and started hot. Then you have someone like Kel Nick, who has so far flamed out, or, say, Spencer torkelson, who I believe was one spot below Julio on your pre season rankings, albeit with a lower future value, and then got sent down recently after putting up a 68 WRC plus an almost 300 plate appearances, so I guess you would expect some players to start fast and others to start slow just by chance, but beyond that, what factors might make someone acclimate more or less quickly than someone else? Yeah, I think the big leaguers making adjustments, if you have a whole or something, there's something about you to which I can adjust and start to exploit than I believe that's a key variable. And then of course, you know, we've seen this sometimes it is just a smaller sample, but you think about some of the guys who have had huge beginnings to their careers. Think about how hot Reese Hoskins was at the very, very beginning. Think about how good Chris paddock was. And then just over time these things tend to play out where, oh, you only have these two pitches well. Now that I've seen you, I can eliminate them or I think I wrote about it in the Astros prospect list. Here's where Jeremy Pena is. Issues are if there's going to be a regression here, it's going to be for this reason. You know, it's a guy who's running a 5% walk rate when surprised me, Michael Harris is running a three and a half or so percent walk rate. They lowered his hands, changed his swing upon entry to the big leagues. He already had kind of a hole at the very, very top of the zone. That's the type of thing that over time you get not just big league advanced scouts, but people looking at heat maps and data and swinging approach angle intersection data and they start to find ways of going at you that makes a huge difference. And maybe it doesn't make a huge difference for the first four or 5 innings of the game, but the relievers that face you start to change and the way you're approached starts to change and so there's some of that. I think that that's a Nolan Gorman thing. I think that's a one yepez thing where you sort of learn, oh, this guy just kind of swings, doesn't he? Why don't we just dump sliders out of the zone and one yap as he goes, oh, well, I guess I'm going to have a sub 300 on base. And not have any defensive value when sometimes you can see that's the coming, which was like the case with yep, where even though he began so hot, his profile is what it was. He's just more likely to be the guy that he's been his whole career. Then he is the guy he was for the first month of his big league career. And so I think some of it is that, but I also think that there's just something about the difficulty of majorly baseball that some of them can't do. Like I can't consistently win on all Madden. I can't do it. I've never been able to do it. I can score a hundred points on all pro. But I can not consistently win on all Madden. It's just too much for me and my 33 year old brain to do anymore.

"That was it. But he did not allow a batted ball with a hit probability or expected batting average higher than two 50, and if you combined all of the expected batting averages of the batted policy allowed, it only adds up to four 80. So he was like sub 500, all his bad balls combined through 7 innings. So he had a real chance, I think, of being the first or at least no one had done this when Sam was reading that article of having a legitimate statcast no hitter there, which would have been a lot harder to do than in actual no hitter. So that would have been pretty cool. I'm sorry that the rains came and spoiled that attempt. So can I be like a bummer? Yeah. So we need a way to adjust the expected batting average stuff though for direction, right? Because this is always, this is always the failure of individual batted ball event, X batting average. What a mouthful that was. No wonder no one wants to talk about stats on a broadcast. You sure have to say a lot of words because the ex batting average doesn't account for directionality. And so horizontal spray direction. Yeah, it takes into account the lift. The launch angle in the vertical direction, but not in the horizontal direction. So but now I want someone to find the closest with that sort of taken into account because you can look at stuff and be like, oh my God, like it's so low. And it's like a number. It's not that it's meaningless. It's just that if you want to confer a specialist status, you got to do a little work I would imagine. Yeah, right. So he had thrown 87 pitches. He could have kept going, would have been fun. But just generally like putting that aside, the resurgence of hunter green, it is interesting. It is counterintuitive perhaps that seemingly the way to unlock hunter green's abilities was to have him throw fewer fastballs. The hunter green who is famous for just throwing a 104 whatever his fastball has been pretty hittable, not a lot of deception seemingly. And so he has tiled back the fastball, not necessarily in terms of speed, but in terms of usage. And has been thrown secondary stuff more. So even for hunter green, who has maybe the fastest fastball, certainly one of the fastest, even he can benefit from throwing more breaking balls, which is something you've seen leaguewide. It's like he's a microcosm of the majors, basically, because the average fastball velocity keeps going up and up, but the fastball usage rate keeps going down and down because breaking balls are really effective. So even hunter green had to mix things up a bit. And particularly, you know, he is, I think, a great reminder that in addition to there being breaking balls, which are just effective on their own. It is useful to have a complicated understanding of fastball utility, right? It's easy to see villa like we see out of hunter green and be like, oh my God, it has to be amazing. But maybe it's about shape or approach angle or you know, there's all kinds of other, you know, like three years ago we were like, there's nothing new to say analytically. We were such dummies. There's always something new. There's always something new under the sun, isn't that nice? Yeah, and maybe you're looking for smaller and smaller edges. I don't know. But there is always some new frontier. And also, Joey Bart, the Giants top prospect at one time and replacement for the retired Buster Posey. He was demoted. He has not filled Buster Posey shoes, although those would be difficult to fill. But that just made me think a little bit about just the range of rookie performance because a lot of highly touted rookies who have made the majors this season have struggled, notably, raid and in varying amounts of playing time. So adley Richmond, for varying degrees of severity, right? Adley Richmond's hitting one 43 two 26 one 96, 62 plate appearances. I don't think anyone's worried about adley regiment. But it is interesting how some players, no matter how talented and polished, they undergo an adjustment period. And others do not. So Richmond is struggling. We've talked about Jared kelme and all the issues that he went through. And there are other guys that, you know, CJ Abrams is another one who has not hidden his major league playing time this year. I guess Spencer torkelson has been somewhat disappointing, you know, a lot of those like, oh wow, this guy's arrived and then it's like, and other guys. It was my greatest sound effect. But other guys, maybe there's an adjustment period where they start out slumping, but then they get it together, like Julia Rodriguez. Maybe had umpire calls going against him, but he has turned things around and now he's maybe the scariest hitter in that Mariners lineup. When you say that, that doesn't sound like much. Yeah, no. But he has been legitimately he's been legitimately very, very good of late. And I think when I left to go deal with some family stuff, I think he was leading the majors in stolen bases. Is he still? Oh, wow, I didn't even look, but he has 17 of them. Yeah, sure as well. Among qualified here is I can't imagine that there's we need a different word than qualified because it makes it sound like I'm saying something mean about those guys. Sure, I'm not, yeah. He just sure leads the majors and so on bases like that, Julio. So he slipped initially, but then got it together and maybe you could lump Bobby witt into that group where he started really slow in his pick things up somewhat. But then there are other guys like Nolan Gorman was raking in triple-A and then got up to the majors and continued to rake. Or like Jeremy Pena, who was one of the best players in baseball, this season, not just one of the best rookies, but one of the most valuable places..

"Honestly, I'm a basketball girl. So it'd be quite pregnant. I've been keeping an eye on it, but I feel like if I start, you know, pumping out the hockey plays right now. People might be like, what's going on with that? But overall, I know it's been super exciting. I love puck daddy, obviously, coming on to the show and whatnot. He was a great job. He's always I feel like cash in their bets. Play to your strengths. You don't have to bet everything, sometimes the best bet you make is the best. You don't make. So yeah, again, no official play from me there, but just wanting to point out some lines on McDavid because he I think he has what 20 20 plus points in ten games and the series basically after two points up per game this poster. He's been awesome. And again, the goals have been hard to come by in that Carolina ranger series with the net binding, especially on the ranger side, which is turkey. But the total is low at 5 and a half, the total is a little higher in the game four matchup with the oilers and the flames. 6 and a half, but we've seen this one 15 in any given game. All right, to the diamond real quick, I do have one play that I'm kind of looking at. There's some really good pictures on the bump tonight. We have Kevin gausman on the bound against my Saint Louis Cardinals. We have Dylan cease and his MLB leading strikeout rate against the Boston Red Sox. They have Corbin burns on the bump against the San Diego Padres. I want to look at Gauss men against my Cardinals at home. He's a minus one 45 favorite plus one 15 on the run line, a total of 7 and a half juice to a dollar and a quarter to the under. I think this is going to be an under environment and bush stadium tonight with Gauss men pitching against a cardinals team that is about two thirds right handed. They've added Nolan Gorman and Brennan Donovan now to balance it out, but Gaussian dominates against righties and the best bats in the Cardinals lineup are right handed. And then the blue Jay is really, they can maybe put like one, two lefties at the most in their lineup and Jordan hicks has gone for the Cardinals tonight and hicks has a monstrous astronomical 66.7% ground ball rate against right handed hitters. So two of every three batters hits the ball to the ground against them. And they don't hit it hard. It's a 22% hard contact rate. He gets mostly medium to soft contact that gets right handed hitting. So I think it's a good matchup for the Cardinals starter. Gauss men is definitely the better starter and one of the best in the league. So I think runs are going to be hard to come by. My favorite way I've found to bet this is under three and a half at even money on DraftKings first 5 total. I think it's going to be a low scoring game at Busch stadium tonight. Aaron, you've been our long ball long shot queen. Again, these are actually hard to cash. Somehow. But here is who you're looking at. It's a funny thing. I'm three for four in these long shots and it's the most random thing ever yesterday, Patrick wisdom, who honestly, to be quite Frank, I don't even know that name until I was researching yesterday. So that just goes to show you how lucky I am. But if I was gonna go with someone today I would go with Mookie betts to hit home run off the nationals game two of the series. He leads the team with ten homers. He had two home runs in the last three games two of them being against the Phillies. Graze on the mound with a 4.36 ERA four and three record. Dodgers offense is obviously elite. I think if anybody's going to hit a home run tonight off this team, office nationals team, it would be Mookie betts. So you can find that, I believe, over. I've seen it at plus three 85 the highest that I've seen it so far. So I like Mookie betts did a home run. We'll do that with my long ball, long shot. I mean, you have been hitting homers like Barry Bonds. You're all fine. It's just like almost intentionally walking bonds is like trailing you right now. You just got to do it. And right now they're cashing in a big way for you. So excellent work there on the diamond. Best of luck tonight to everyone and all of your gambling endeavors, NBA, NHL. MLB and beyond, that will do it for today a little more than ten minutes of the bets.

"Just looking through the rousers for more than mackenzie. Goro be here. I've seen five. Mackenzie your starts this year. So i don't really care to see any more of him but other people are going to want to c. J. abrams the padras top prospectors. Who's a top five overall prospect. Baseball had a severe injury during the year. He's back for this now. He's getting tuned up during some instructional league games on the backfield's right now. Actually he's in the he's in the lineup today. Last i saw him he was just walking around the padres complex with a pair of four hundred and fifty dollars on which i made fun of him for. So there's that type of guy and then you have your your sleeper types. Like guys whose names i didn't even know until they got put on the rosser and what i'm doing background on the individuals who are put on the rousers like. Oh wow look guys numbers this year were pretty exceptional and He's twenty five but it's a pitcher so he could be immediately useful and or important to a big league clubs so those guys become a high priority for me like just as much some of the high profile guys. I have much better idea of what i think about. Nolan gorman right now than i do some twenty five year old pitcher. I've never heard of butler striking out a batter. Half printing during the course of the regular season. So guys like that. Or a keegan curtis of the diamondbacks who they got back from the yankees in the tim. Low castro trade. A guy who had pretty good myrlie numbers. Who until that deal. I hadn't heard about and then you end up with you. Know gregory santos who was suspended for eighty games for. Phd's was a top one hundred guy entering the year seeing how he looks coming off of Piece special will be pretty important. Like i could literally rundown every player on every roster and talk about why they are interesting and important from to see but ultimately the goal is going to be to see as many as i can. Obviously we're gonna try to structure my looks with like what the coverage of the list rollout looks like so if the angels list is the first list that we published like i wanna get in and see glendale ace app because they have the angels kids and alright those half dozen reports if they need to be written so that the angels can be like cemented basically then in trucks will be done my folly reports in that group will be done and then that list as a whole can be written without us missing any information right and so that that's going to structure it i will say like i do encourage people come down if you're vaccinated one hop on a plane. The plane rides plight suck anyway so the fact that you have to have your mask on in the airport and for the duration of the plane ride it makes it slightly more sake to be on a plane but it's not like that experience was fun and it's being wrecked by that so come on down like it's going to be easy to distance at all of the folly. Yes ballparks because no one goes arizona in terms of like covert right now like you know. We're doing okay compared to everybody else. We're not doing great but like you can probably. The weather's nice enough here that when you eat all your meals at a restaurant when you're on the road like you can probably do all outside. I'd encourage folks to stay if you have the means to stay in scottsdale. That's that's where you want to go. It's your best option for like hanging out and eating good food and also being within twenty minutes of driving to three of the ballpark's for colleague the scottsdale stadium where the scorpions play Salt river fields where the rafters play and sloan park in mesa. Where the river. The mesa solar sox play like the cubs and the as and stuff Bi like are there into is. You're looking at the the one play game. Where do you have the roster's up right now. now i can. What are you. Pick a random name. Okay oh i like this Let win and just thrown at me. And i'll tell you if i either why they're important to see or stuff about them and we'll see if you can like stump me. I don't feel confident about my ability to do that. But the pitching the pitching in folly always worse than the hitting. So as i'm sharing and looking at the roster's when i first got them. It was every hitting prospect for the most part. I can tell you a lot about like. They're already good enough. And that ninety percent of them are just on the board already right but because of the nature of like falling pitching and wanting to keep your actual pitching prospects healthy and maybe experiment with and stress tasks some of your fringy pitching prospects. The group of pitchers that comes the following is always a little bit worse than the gruppo hitters. Why don't you go through each rosser right now. Pick a pitcher at random. A hitter at random. Tell me about taking a name guy. Because of his name. Tell me about zack. Lincoln felt sir. Alright so.

And it could be that harare will be able to step up and say yeah i can be that heir-apparent and potentially enable the cardinals to do something different with andrew business this winter if they so choose if people for god and wrap it up with this september call. Ups are different. It's not like anybody on the forty man come on up it's a different deal. So maybe explain how that works for fans also Dc anybody being called up by the cardinals. Yeah it's interesting you know. You've talked about the the the labor trade offs. We're talking about that earlier in our in our chat here dan and one of the trade offs that was made was as as folks were called a year ago. They expanded active rosters to twenty six players from twenty-five well at the same time baseball decided no more with the up to forty players allowed up to the entire forty man roster up in september were only going to allow two players and while that those reviewed as separate issues they kinda balance out money wise. And i doubt it's a coincidence. Because guess what they have to pay another player a minimum of half a million dollars a year at the major league level and they can recoup that expense by having only two players up from twenty six to twenty eight instead of the cardinals averaged I went back and looked the data somewhere between six and eight call ups every september so instead of six or eight you only have to so it'll be interesting to see if the cardinals bring up relievers Of course three better minimum Makes puts less of a premium on having large bullpen. they certainly need help with the bat But the reality is the cupboards pretty bear at aaa memphis in terms of any potential impact hitters to call up or they would've been called up already You know we saw Just a williams are in year. He's on the injured list other than he and allie sanchez. there are no triple a hitters. That are on the forty man roster right now you know folks would be interested to see nolan gorman or maybe a one yep as. I really doubt they're ready. And on the pitching side. You know it's the same suspects that our candidates woodford oviedo on hell ron bone on the bullpen side. Fernandez elhage whitley So you know. There's not going to be probably they..

"If they were unable to sign any of the others they could shift more money to this young man xavier kasereka and signed him instead but the cardinals were able to get all their guys on board Including the first. Pick the right hander. Michael mcgreevy the second. Pick a high schooler. Joshua by as an outfielder and abayas has has already begun to play in the florida complex league. That's the rookie level league. Jupiter almost all the other players Including the competitive balance number. Seventy pick overall ryan holgate and outfielder from arizona. All those players the majority of them have suited up with class a palm beach. So they're playing at a pretty high level for first year players and as a result of this and then a number. I think it's about eight or nine of the players including mcgreevy haven't yet been activated because the cardinals have all these young men in jupiter. They're assessing you know. How many innings eight. Through how many plate appearances how many innings they played in the field this spring for their high school or college teams and they're sort of bringing them into action slowly and another byproduct of that is given their only so many seats on the roster's A number of other players who had been in the system and if for three four years have been given their release as these new players. Come in so there's been a wholesale change at at palm beach with. I think it's a dozen new players to have joined that roster in the last week. And like i said given you know they've lost fourteen in a row. Getting some fresh blood in isn't a bad thing in terms of comparing that to other teams brian. And and getting their draft pick signed are the cardinals at the forefront of this or is this kind of commonplace now with the lack of picks in the draft that most teams get all their guys in or at least the majority of a man. Yeah most of them do another some high profile. Mrs for example. The mets i. I picked kumar rocker from vanderbilt. Sixth overall pick a guy that any organization would love to have for whatever reason the mets got cross ways with rockers representatives regarding money and you know they they were unable to come to an agreement and while the mets get another pick next year to compensate you lose an important year of development with a with a good young player so the cardinals have always done a good job in discussing with the players. Their families their representatives. You know what it's gonna take money wise about to get them to sign because teens don't wanna waste good picks they wanna make sure that once they make the commitment to a young man. They're going to get his name on a contract and the cardinals traditionally have done a very good job of getting their players. Sign about matthew liberty for and nolan gorman last night gorman a home run liberty for when i think four and a third a lot of folks and i can understand why they are curious whether or not these guys would get a call up this season. My personal feeling is that that will not happen. Especially with the minor league season being pushed back and it coincides with the major league season What's your gut on those two in where they're at right..

"And so you know. They've just got to be careful with liberty for to make sure that they don't hurt his development in the in the importance of trying to help. Saint louis this season now. I i will say ron donors down there. That we've seen eligible down there right now and is closing and As is jank woodford rather than those three. There are no pitchers in memphis. Who have who are on the forty man roster and frankly who are you know showing that they're that they're ready to come up saint louis and help nolan. Gorman gets promoted so he's one step away from the big leagues. yeah i was. I guess pleasantly surprised to see nolan gorman promoted and there were a series of of third base promotions that occurred in tandem that will talk about but the garments are our number one prospect and his age eight sixty two and he got almost two hundred plate. Appearances a double a. He brought a strikeout rate down in his walk. Rate was was over nine percent which which is good because of course the eleven home runs in the fact that he's playing second base as well as third or what you know are tending to draw out of attention rightfully so But you know it's a different situation from dealing carlson two years ago where. The cardinals kept carlson in In aa basically five months before they brought him up to triple eight for the final month. So you could say nola. Gorman is a faster trajectory in that part of his career then was dylan carlson. And so you say okay. We've got allah july august september for knowingly gorman to continue to grow. I mean there's no guarantee that he's going to you know take off in aaa right away. He has enough time there to get feed on the ground and realistically come to camp next spring with carpenter likely gone to compete for a job. on the saint louis infield in terms of the The movement with the minor leagues. Some pretty big promotions is past. Week weren't there. Yeah yeah that. I alluded at a minute ago. Let's just go through them. So the cardinals have three very good third base prospects all in the top twelve or so in the system we of course talked about gorman number one and we have malcolm nunez who was international signee and in his first year in In two thousand eighteen won the batting One of the triple crown the dominican summer league And he moved up then from pin peoria to double a springfield to basically backfill. Gorman and nunez Slashed over eight hundred at peoria and as a very pretty good strikeout rate about eighteen little under eighteen percent and still drew drew walks reasonable rates. So it you know malcolm newness showed that. He was ready to take that next step and that was. That's really good for him. Because nunez ended up back in johnson city in two thousand nineteen. And so you know. The cardinals took a little bit of a risk putting him in hiatus start the year but he showed that he can handle it which is which is great and then the third move maybe the most exciting move maybe more exciting than gorman is jordan walker. Who of course was the first round out of a georgia last year. As a high schooler. he he missed. I don't know maybe three weeks or so with palm beach but still a hit..

"Been a busy week when you consider what's happened with the minor leagues in some of the promotions of their big big stars in that includes norman nolan gorman. We're going to get into that in just a moment but as always brian great dear voice are things going. Great dancer. Pleasure to be here is always. Let's start with the futures game so we got a couple of guys. At our childhood friends. They wind up in the same organization. And now they'll be in denver at the futures game and the all star game and that's nolan gorman and matthew libertadores so this is this is pretty cool to have those two guys together. That's right the and actually for nola gorman. It's his second opportunity to play in the futures game. He actually was in the game. Two years ago with dylan carlson so And the way the futures game setup if folks don't know that they pick twenty fi- prospects from american league farm systems and twenty five against from national league farm systems. They play seventy inning game on the sunday of all star weekend so nationally televised of course. So it'll be a great forum for fans who haven't seen gorman and liberty for assuming laboratory pitcher in the game you know that Haven't seen them compete On a on a major scale like this course both are now at triple a memphis. Libertadores been there all year other than the time that he spent with the team. Usa and the olympic qualifying round but But gorman is brand new to aaa and so the fact that three months into the season the systems number one number two prospects in rankings at least gorman number one toward number two are actually our national top one hundred prospects really in the top thirty. According to mlb pipeline. So you know these guys are guys that are you know. They're futures in saint. Louis could be relatively soon now. I don't mean to be so in terms of days but weeks or months. Well let's go into liberty tour. When did they have to decide whether or not he will go with Team usa and compete in the olympics. What's the cutoff date. Well mine understanding is. The rosters are going to be announced..

"Occasional power and what you'd like. of course. He is at occasional power. Become more predictable power. The one positive thing in the lineup is that the emergence of of tiro neil has helped solidify that number five spot. Perhaps in the lineup. So it'd be interesting to see when the comes back whether he'll drop in there or whether slipping behind o'neill i'm curious to brian. What have you heard about the crowds across the board in in minor league. Baseball are fans coming out. Are they attending these games. What what's been happening with the crowds in the minor leagues. Yeah yeah the. Dennis has been good. I memphis center set a new record for this season. The other night Fans are getting back out and in each municipality is handling things a little bit differently but generally what we're seeing overall. Is that the mask. Mandates are on the social distancing. Some teams have set up special sections for fans who still want to be social distance but generally speaking Regaining more back to normal. Know the big thing for minor league baseball courses to have the big promotions in the summer to bring the fans in whether it be fireworks or special attendants sorts. Attendees or that. You know that kind of thing to you know. Add some enhancements to the baseball being played on a field. Let's get challenge. The challenge gives me dan. The charleston from the on the field side is that the cardinals minor league teams in the best of the four minor. League teams is only winning one out of every three games. So it's just been a tough go for the cardinals traditionally which which have winning teams at the minor league level this year. It's just not happening. Let's talk about some of the guys that are big names down in the minor leagues. I'll start with nolan gorman. How has he been playing so far this season as we talked about before. No gorman started out playing third base pretty much every day. slips slips in a designated hitter now and then as well and the cardinals have now had him playing more second base as well as he's you know building that broadening experienced hopefully qualify him to help saint louis and twenty twenty two are what we've seen as the calendar turned for me. When gordon was good drove in ten runs and twenty two games hit. Three home runs while we've seen in. June is a major uptick in his stats He he has a four thirty-three batting average for the first.

"Like under your saint. Louis sports tree. Oh i would like an answer. That the national league's going to have it. Because i think the cardinals could go get a real one and and it can help this team. You know i would like people to stop phrasing. The question is should the cardinals. Bring back of your molina and wainwright or try to improve the offense because the me both they can and and and it doesn't mean they to go out and trade fair and auto and go get mike trout. There's waste do this realistically without you know committing a ton of money when they're trying to do the opposite as they approach. What's going to be changing team in two thousand and twenty two. There's a way to do this. There's gonna be affordable affordable health. The often available on the cardinals can do more than one thing at once. They can find a way to bring back wainwright a molina and also find a way to improve this offense. That's what i want for. Christmas is to all agree on that. Does affordable help qualify as matt carpenter at d. h. nolan gorman at third base. I don't know his gorman ready for that carl's made it sound. Mike have anywhere else to play. That's a good point. Yeah that's a good question. Is there going to be a minor league. Season that to the list of of unknowns. It's a it's a fair point we want. Answers is the phrase of twenty twenty. Three twenty twenty is. I don't know that's how many times have we heard it and sometimes it means someone's trying to not give you an answer sometimes. It's a brush up. This case has actually been true. Well we got some fiery takes totally fair though better. Twenty twenty one for everybody right. No kidding no kidding but Certainly with the hoops in the hockey restarting and College football who knows who mizzou will end up play next week we've got a lot on our proverbial holiday plate so merry christmas men have a great week. "Think yeah, that is. You know I don't think it will hold up other deals but I, think you want some clarity on that and I think that from my vantage point, you want to get it done. It make sense on level and. It sets the tone for everything because then wainwright then knows Riady is and I. I get the feeling that maybe a package deal. You know we're Yada Goes, UENO goes baseball perspective. You Need Adam wainwright next year to good. Yeah. With Hudson Dowell. Now, Yeah Adam wainwright is checked every box and then some to prove that he's a guy who can still be you know two years ago before the first one year deal we were kind of saying. You know and he even came back and pitch that Sunday night game against the dodgers and said that. There were times during that season two, thousand eighteen where he couldn't lift his arm ride. July. But after an off season of well, he'll come back and incentive laden deal. You know even if he's in the bullpen, what a great influence he be sitting down with those guys talking baseball he was unbelievable had one of the best home records in baseball and this year. Was One of the best pitchers. Yeah. In the National League, there's a value. To Ueno. When Chris Carpenter was here and Chris. Carpenter goes back to Roger Clemens in Ken and those guys Roy Halladay there is a value to what he's passing along to flaherty. You know now I do you sit there and say it's worth five million dollars no but there is a value to having him along and there was a lot of value to those two guys being leaders of this team to what the team went through this year. There's no question in my mind that was very, very important so. And I I just think it's important to have those guys retire cardinals. If you can do it again, budgetary constraints, we'll see what happens his strikeouts per nine this year we're oh yeah. Right. At his career average his walks per nine curb was asked career by the way and if you. If you have one thing that you do really really really really really well, be around for a while the. Oh. Yeah. I'm out for a while by the way his curveball according to fan graphs in two thousand, ten was top three in two thousand and twenty ten years later top getting more. More spinoff credible I don't know how he does it but he does, which is amazing the last quick baseball want to throw at you and talk with Derek about this as well is. In the midst of a lot of uncertainty about free agents who guys take one year deals how will the market look How will D. H. being around impact teams? Maybe Nelson. Cruz now is an option for everyone in the National League but also the uncertainty the minor leagues. Could we see some accelerated paths for guys and could have happen as quickly as next year with Nolan Gorman and Matthew Liberator I mean. Some point. You gotta play and if there's not a minor league season, even if you're gonNA struggle as a young player of the big league level, those guys that that can help you. You know was interesting to hear Rob Manfred yesterday talk about he said, well, we're approaching one hundred and sixty game season and a start of a season with an asterisk..

"I'm fascinated by what teams will do with their type of players that are like Dylan Carlson Cody Whitley Zach Thomson. The guys at might have been here normal season right now. and if it's a shortened season, which will be. What a teams do I mean do they look at it and say we're going to go for. We're GONNA. Call up our players and treat this like a normal season and start their clocks, or do they hold him back into? Say Look, it's out liar. Everybody's trying to get paid and we'll worry about that stuff. In Two thousand and twenty one I do think that's a fascinating perspective of what's going on in Major League Baseball. I think we have to think about the alternative I mean. Do you want? Do we WanNa Tell Nolan Gourmet movie? If as the cardinals do we wanna tell Nolan Gorman that he is going to have the year off. WanNa to tell Zach. Thompson that he's not gonNA throw for a year. I mean I would think it. It's a two way evaluation. To try these guys, one is hey, can you help us? That's to be number one. Number two is. Can you help us and is there a? Is there a long term benefit of US having you around and us? Having our hands on you and our eyes on you? Our coaches on you because if these guys aren't going to get paid, and they're not gonna be able to play, if the minor league is not going to have a place to play them, they can't be around that would. Really go against the purpose of having a smaller roster. And where are they? GonNa Find Competitive Instruction. Are they going to? You know you're going to have a lot. A lot of baseball players suffering from last year so I think if I'm the cardinals. And knowing how they think about development. I'm not talking about Nolan talking about You know service time anymore about talking about you know Dylan. Carlson how much money I can save I started in Memphis because Memphis is not going to be an option I'm thinking about. Where do I want him to be at a certain year? And how much better off could he be by being around the team by by having hands on instruction by being as close as possible to playing? Playing every day, even if it's even if it's pinch, hit here or maybe just you know a reserve or on the travel whatever find a way to have those guys that you're going to rely on in the near future around because I don't WanNa. Bunch my top prospect, who are close having La season because that could derail things for a long time July tenth. The NHL is set training camp. So this is common. What do you think? I love it and it's nice to see a concrete date. You know it's the blues gotta get their guys back in house, and and you know this starts the clock Dan and this starts. The fingers crossed pay. Hopefully, it's one continued step forward after the next hopefully as these small group workouts. Bigger ones than there's not a setback because I. do wonder and I think you do to how many setbacks can happen?.

"If you will because these guys at in the past just really haven't had a chance to make our Qila but now they are given are going to be given an opportunity to do that so you wanna see them make the most of it and you know I really feel like you WANNA see competitive batch. You WanNa see them being able to grind those at bat and then. I think what defensive standpoint you WanNa make sure that that. They're living up to expectations or what we believe is is important from a defensive standpoint so I think those two guys that stands out to me is is sort of most critical. What they need to do you know obviously somebody like Dylan. Carlson I think is is more on the outside looking in right now just given the fact. That got You we have those other players right now ahead of him but you know things change and I think I also think you know you also still need to see a very competitive camp from from DAX in Harrison Baiter have you seen signs with Bater that could be different in terms of you know hits two. Oh five last year. But he's seeing some adjustments that he made in the off season. I think so I I'm a little cautious to sort of weigh in on that yet. I think like allow games to be played and see where that goes. But you know he's certainly looks fit. He looks strong. He understands that his approach at the plate has to change. He's gotTA figure out how to get walks. He's going to have to figure out how to strike. Ls and put the ball in play. If he does that could be pretty fun to watch. I think it was fun to watch the two kids Carlson and Nolan Gorman. Over the weekend. Those two guys are exciting. Aren't they know they really are You know they're both talented young man and you know I certainly think they're going to have bright futures in the big leagues at some point. So what's his role with the club right now and being in uniform with the Saint Louis Cardinals? Obviously we all have a a a lot of history with ANC and and he called me up over the offseason just trying to get an opportunity to do We're calling it. An internship Tiny tongue in cheek of course but He just really wanted some exposure to to to get an understanding of sort of the modernisation of what's happening in the game today. I'm you think back to. When he played there wasn't high speed cameras. There wasn't rap soda or or track. Man He's just trying to understand like how all these new technologies are being used and and I think he's trying to do that to have a better. Understanding of winning is in the booth talking about baseball in front of a camera that he's doing it in a in a modern voice. I think it's fascinating to mow and I'll wrap it up with this. How you take that information and then related to the player in uniform. How are the cardinals doing that to try to break it down and make it very simple for players to understand because it can be a little confusing at times but you look at some of the young people we have in camp? These players have been brought up with the type of technology and so a lot of this is getting the coaches caught up and and how they can use it. Now we do at the minor league side. We've been been using some of this For from multiple years so there's that learning curve. That's already there but I think the biggest thing is is just getting everybody on the same page and how to communicate in utilize it and it's not for everybody someplace. Aren't that interested but majority of the players you're drafting and signing today. They want to devour it. And so it's really just getting everybody up to speed on on how to coach it how to use it and ultimately how to communicate it. Hey Mo thank. You often running here in spring training. "Had begun and a chance to visit with Derek Gold of stltoday.com and the Saint Louis Post dispatch and Derek. Couple of games In the books and I found it interesting on the first game for the cardinals which was on Saturday You're covering a different team in a different look. And maybe how fans evaluate this team Tell me that experience of going to see the Astros. Open up against Washington. I mean to be fair. I did do a double header that day. I did do my job watching the cardinals Dan. I know I know. Just men with my questions will you okay. Then I went south to see Max Scherzer pitch against the Astros on the Astros. First Game Since the you know the firings and the commissioners investigation into the signs stealing since they just were involved in a scandal It was their first start. Our first game I can't really say though that it was those astros first game because there was no regular in the lineup. They really that was interesting. Wasn't it yeah and gas? It shouldn't have been surprised but it's it also speaks to like Houston here. They are again. I mean there are rules about this stuff. You GotTa put four regulars in the lineup right. And it's rare home game and they didn't do his their home gave their home in their home fans and they did not give a single regular the the the lineup that they had Dan. They're combined zero plate appearances zero plate appearances in the postseason. Yeah I don't know how they get away with that. I I was yeah. I was shocked so that lineup stoled it or something. You Know Dusty. Baker was asked about it and he said you know look. The young guys are ahead of the veterans at this point but I mean it is what it is you know why he's doing it But YOU'RE GONNA have to face the music at some point you are and he said he would start trickling them in You know in a way. It was like a nod to the nationals. Let them have their night. There were far more national fans that have bought tickets to a Houston home game. Then Astros fans there's A. There's a real interesting question down there You know sort of press box shattered beyond but at least worth watching is if the Houston fans. Stay away from this team You know I've been wondering that too. Yeah a lot of talent. They have a lot of charisma. But you know will Houston fans show up the ones who did war there war everything I mean. They were dressed to stand out as Houston fan so Kudos to them But there was a lot more nationals fans than than the Astros fans internationals home game. And there's was an interesting kind of atmosphere you know. You have the bane of the chairs. The signs were taken by ushers. So there wasn't a whole lot of signs there Lots and lots of booze for players. Who had no role in it a very very public? I didn't put this and I should have put this in my story but a very very public hug from day Martinez in Dusty Baker before the game during the national anthem I I think you know just in being around there that day what I realized and kind of knew going in Dan. But what I realized is that Houston is GONNA come out of this. Houston is going to have a good season Houston is going to reclaim its reputation. It's GONNA be because dusty Baker is there it's going to be because baseball really likes dusty. Baker and there are a lot of people who think dusty Baker got a raw deal the nationals before they go off win the world series and you know dusty Baker who people are yeah. Let's talk about the cardinals couple of games in the books. Some guys are starting to stand out. I get it. It's only two games but What drew your attention over the weekend when Mondo Sosa first and foremost From a position player standpoint. Strong play defensively. They're the first game than continued strong. Play defensively in the second game. Port Saint Lucie Had the game tying home run had a single to right field pulled a ball off over the wall for the two run homer to tie the game. Three three which is where finished so Just so suggest a strong kind of look I mean just to be more confident player Always had a lot of verve and a Lotta Style. When it came to defense and very reliable he might be. He's on the shortlist for the best defensive player's ING care Probably behind Wong as far as infielders go and behind. Baiter as far as all fielders go and pry behind Thomas but right there maybe just even a straight ahead of all the tourists. But he's always had that it's the offense. Where was the offense GonNa come from consistently take? Could you take a competitor? That could he could. He provide the majors and early but he's shown to do couple. Good Games pitching wise. You saw Genesis Cabrera outing. In the first game of Daniel Pawn Stay Leone was the best pitcher against the mets Three strikeouts good stuff good consistency of mechanics Real you know Just a real assured competitiveness to a matter. You know he's a bit ahead of the other guys because he's trying to make an impression. I thought the other guy that really stood out for me. And it's only one bad but just how carpenter took the ball to left field. Now he had vice. Yeah and and you know. I'm going to bet primarily. The other one was was wind. Aided in being base hit but the first time the ball got deep and he took it to left field. Took it with authority. Which is what. We all have been clamoring about with the shift in particular with Matt Carpenter. And if he's going to get back to the hitter that he was which was to use all fields with authority That's a good sign. I took away that as being an important and I get it. It's only one at bat but I watch him and be. Everything's trying to go to left. There's concerted effort with what he's trying to do and I. I just thought that could be a very important. You know stepping stone in the right direction for him. Yeah live EP. To be exactly You see that against against pitchers who knows what he's trying to do and try to use it against him. I saw him wainwright Ganz Matt Carpenter and live EP. And of course car Wainwright's GonNa want ads. Success and execute those pitches in South. And so he was like all right. You can go the other way with me. Here's what I'm GonNa do any and it worked but you saw carpenter still going like okay that pitch. I go the other way as a pop up. Okay what do I do? You know what I mean. Just kind of thinking through the of what and where he can do with what pitches if his swing is right and he has drilled so much on getting that swing back to where it was where. It's not you know it's sweeping zone not flicking the zone. It's it's driving the ball. The left field not wafting. Its left field It's attacking balls on the outside of the plate. Not ignoring them for a ball. Call or for strike call. You know that he stares at in walked back to the dugout man. I I just think that you know he. He has such a such an innate and gifted feel for the strike zone that act gives him a head start as he now looks to experiment and really focus on. Okay what can I do with A more a signature swing and what he can do as far as driving the ball. I hope you know about this. Chinooks rewards out. I'm really interesting to see how he Works with that. You know it's what they would call a show. Now you'll strike Hussein like sixty eight sixty nine miles an hour with that curve. Yeah in any any telegraphy you know. So it's it's something that you know. He's got a not let the hitter. No it's common but if play off the slider I think his fastball plays and the split plays and it's what does he bring those to you. Know I mean. Don't don't rule them out as uh closer guy that is possible other teams looked at him as a potential closer to the cardinals will too. I think to the other one that stood out to me or at least two players that stood out. I love the advanced by Dylan. Carlson and Nolan Gorman. I mean you're seeing a difference even a year later with those guys really. I think a lot would nolan. Gorman agree yeah. I totally agree in control in the box. I mean he always had a lovely swing right like really lovely left. Handed swing just lofting power natural and everything like that just a lot to like about his swing but you wondered how in control of the strike zone. He was like how where he was you know. I mean he'd run into a home run but would he go up there and create a home run. Does that make sense? And I think you know just in watching him In lobby P watching him and the P. watching him now in games he just he looks like a guy who just has a keener high for the type of pitchy needs to then do damage with very. I've been very impressed..

"The Cardinal Nation. Twenty twenty prospectors guide and it is a wonderful resource for me on these telecasts to find out who these guys are to get more background autumn. Your team is put this together. You have done a just a terrific job with it. You're to be commended Ryan and I want to start with at least in this conversation. Let's go through your top five prospects. How you came about these numbers and we'll start with number five all right and before I do that. I WANNA mention that of the fifty prospects on our list. The top eleven are all in majorly camp this year. So that tells you you know the proximity of the top prospects in the system to the major leagues. That's not all that uncommon given that you know the prospects typically at the longest track record are those who are closest meters but there's a lot of young talent in spring camp. This year's my point solution to your to your question number five on the top prospect list is kept can catch her Andrew Kisner and everybody knows about Kisner and the reason that he got the number five. We have a where our message board community are fans on the Cardinal Nation site Vote for their own top fifty Derek Short. Who's our prospect analyst who works at Springfield does his list and then. It mindless independently. We take those three and blend them into one Kisner situation is Now that you know that man leader says returned he'll either be the everyday catcher in Memphis which is most likely or they're still an outside possibility that he might be the twenty sixth man feeling that last spot on the Roster Andrews made good progress in the defensive side ostensibly he sort of plateaued out He's more of an average guy than a power guy. But you know there's no reason that Andrew Kisner couldn't and wouldn't step in if you're Molina had to move to the injured list because I think we leaders will be the backup no matter what so you know. There's a possibly that we'll see Andrew in Saint Louis You know at some point in time this year based on the health the other two catchers you've gone with an infielder at number four yeah. Yours Montero added to the forty man roster over the winter. He's actually my number three prospect on my personal list because I think You know much arrowheads. Great potential as a power hitting third baseman. I think as defenses. Good enough you could stay at the position. Although some folks are saying he could be a first baseman. I I think if we look at the needs in Saint Louis Ecorse third base may be a need before I a Monteiro had multiple injuries last year including Hamate bone injury in his hand which takes hitters some time to come back for him he went down to the Arizona Fall. League played regularly down there for about six weeks. You know didn't really get back into his offensive group but Monteiro was the most valuable player in amid Wesley two years ago. And he's a guy that you know start it's Greenfield or they may move him up to Memphis and a lot of that of course depends on what happens with no Gorman because ideally you wouldn't want if you had your druthers you wouldn't have Gorman and my on the same roster so at number three speaking of Nolan Gorman it's his best friend that has been brought into the Organization Matthew Liberty Tower and he comes in at number three on your prospect list. Yeah and liberty again was the guy with the cardinals picked up in trade and they keep up. You know some good town to outfielder Jose. Martinez and Randy arose but Libertarian. Before he joined. The cardinal system was a top one hundred prospect nationally. Really around around top fifty prospect nationally so laboratory immediately as soon as he joined. Karnal system became the top pitching prospect in the organization. Now he's not pitched above class so if he would have been the cardinal system last year for example that would be Peoria so the next logical step liberty for would be at least start the season with Palm Beach. But what we've seen in the past pitchers at Palm Beach if they get off to a good start make six or eight starts and dominate the league. We came in the Texas League before too long and then from the Texas League you know. It's not far to Saint Louis so I don't think we're GONNA see Libertarian. Saint Louis this year. I don't mean that. But if he progresses like they think he will he'll be guy will be talking about next year potentially ticket an extra saint. Louis Yeah that's kind of the path of Cody Whitley. Last year. You know starting out Palm Beach and then rising through the system. Very quickly now. He's a reliever but really did impressed. let's stay on the list though number two on your list is Nolan Gorman nap known Gorman obviously the top power prospect in the system one of the top our prospects in all of Minor League Baseball Gorman's not going to be a guy that's gonna hit forever Jr but he's a guy that can put the ball over the fence and he can drive in runs and you know he again. Finished last season at Palm Beach could go back there or they could challenge him. And you know. I can't wait to see what Nolan Gorman can do in the smaller ballparks of the Texas League and that's going to happen during twenty twenty it's only a matter of win and you know Matt Carpenter's under contract for awhile and he plays the same position is only Gorman but I'm sure everybody would love to see If Gorman put together a year like Carson did last year and get himself injected into the mix for Saint Louis in two thousand twenty number one on your list. No surprise in its Dylan Carlson. Carlson folks who listened to Mondays with MOE again president of baseball OPS. John lack talk about Dylan Carlson. You don't eat of course in the most positive ways possible but also most signal told you very clearly. Hey we think probably the best route is for crossing to get some at BATS AT MEMPHIS. Open the year and go from there now. That could change the course if tyrod Neal Lane Commerce. Maybe just a wins. You know. Don't perform well. Maybe get injured. You know and then there becomes a neat. But the key thing about Dylan. Carlson is. He's GonNa play every day. He's not going to beat a fourth outfield. He's not going to be the fifth outfielder in Saint Louis and he only has seventeen eighteen games of experience. A TRIPLE A. So you know you can go back there. It's not going to be serviced manipulating thing. It's going to be a thing where he needs to get more at bats and play and if that's not going to be in Saint Louis. It certainly won't be a bad thing if he has to start the season. It's all aboard the newest restaurant in Saint Louis. The train shed at union station perfectly. Before and after blue's in Cardinal Games historic saint. Louis Union station is downtown's newest. Dining destination train sheds create a pub and their Soda Fountains Modern Diner. I found it incredibly interesting. This last Week last couple of days that the cardinals have added a female coach to the minor leagues. And tell us a little bit about her and what that role may be. Yeah this is something that Mark Sacks broke the story about on Monday. The person is named Tina Whitelock. And she's a former Softball America off players South Carolina. The cardinals have a program that they've had for about the last five years and they call it the fourth coach program. Really what it is. It's a fourth coach Slash Scout Program. What they do is they take a a young person who's interested in either being a coach or scout or maybe they don't know for sure what direction for example Mike Schultz a great example of a guy who did both early in his career before deciding to focus on coaching so they take this course coach and they assigned one to Memphis Greenfield. Went Palm Beach area and they participate before the Games in batting practice and all the drills and then once the game starts they change in the street clothes.

"Good in here man. I like took a shower. This morning told my hair. I'm trying to. I'm trying to rise to the occasion. Here well GONNA have to get a makeup thing going on with normal. TV guys get like the foundation right. That's the thing I why don't you don't know all right. Well not for for many years in maybe now ideal. I saw Romney not tweets going to like the makeup look in my younger days at in half to you now occasionally. There's maybe some makeup applied. But why do we have to talk about that. I don't want to talk about that. I'm just taking shots at TV guys. No no this is a compliment. I feel honored to be on video so much. I'm not used to this. I had to like find a shirt that wasn't wrinkled. And like put away my cargo shorts. Usually you know it's like like thank you like knee. High Tube socks that kind of stuff knee high to shocks the common print writer. What do you think a For people that are curious about this. What are what are writers? Looked like when they show up at the ballpark. Hey listen that's a question for for for you critic not me. I'm going to protect affect our brethren. All right we have to be versatile. Okay we got to walk the walk a banana a lot of stairs. We don't just get to sit in the air conditioned studio and how Ya and have all the staff brought brought to us. That's how it works. You don't get the we don't get the you know all of the all the things catered to us. We have to be a little more versatile. We wear that maybe the tennis shoe as opposed posed posted the the dress you the tennis shoes opposed to verse versatility. That's all you know. A lot of people they tune into This particular podcast to listen to our apparel selection. That's right there are others though that Saint Louis magazine I think ranked us like you and me like one two top. Ah Dressed sportswriters I get it I mean and it makes all the sense in the world. let's jump into some cardinals ready. Yeah let's do it. I love doing these Fridays because we can jump all around talk about the week. That was maybe the week ahead the weekend ahead and also you know some of the news at that's out there and one of the biggest things that is gathered the interest of anybody that loves baseball Whether you're cardinal fan or not is that Nolan are Annatto could be traded and then there's reports at the cardinals could be interested. Could you imagine Nolan our Nado in Saint Louis and what that would look like. Yes because I've imagined it like we. We all have right. I mean that would be a great addition it is the best third baseman in baseball. It would be outstanding for the cardinals to have a player who is so good not just offensively defensively and all around around start the game and there's a reason right. The cardinals have over the years. been linked to this guy a lot of teams. Everything thinks Erdos aside the cardinals like covet covet him and have so. This isn't all that shocking that you know. If if Nolan Aaron Otto was going to be moved that the cardinals could be connected to this and interested in this. I'm a little hesitant to think that it's like going to happen or that. It's that it's more likely to happen now than it might have been in the past just for some of the roadblocks that sit in front of it Also the rockies could very well just hold on Nolan auto and see where they're at the trade deadline and say hey if we're winning let's keep the star player. WHO's the has guy on our team and if we're going off the rails then let straight him that there's no real pressure for them to make this decision now so we can get in? I'm sure we will to the to the a potential challenges of it but in terms of the wow effect like no one needs to be sold on how awesome it would be for Melania Nado to be in a cardinals uniform ever. What are the challenges which is a lot of them? I mean he's got the let's start with the fact that the cardinals have committed both in in their words and their their contracts their finances to Matt Carpenter Governor. I mean and I'm not the leading the parade on the Matt Carpenter Bounceback Tour but you remember very well. The the play the cardinals made with Dexter Fowler. After his bad season they said upfront early. Like he's our guy. We're not gonNA go anywhere else where we think. He's better than what he just showed. It seems to me like the carpenter. Critter thing has been a direct page from the from the Fowler playbook in terms of their their betting on it a balanced back they are they're committing to him and he has that assurance that he's going to be the guy we've also asked the cardinals they could see him. Maybe playing some outfield and they've pretty much shut the door on that. Now things can change. There was a time when the cardinal said Matt Carpenter was a first first baseman and that was it it was on more bouncing around in the second base right so so. This isn't something that that hasn't happened in the past of him moving positions after feeling like he was locked into one they have given him that extension last season. which the reasoning at the time was they wanted them to his career and a cardinals uniform? He'd come come off that really hot surge and in eighteen although it really cool off in September and I don't think he's really hard contract to move. I think think carpenters contract back. Fowler's contractor both really hard to move and that's part of the reason you know you're dressing it up by saying we we. We not only hope he is back. They need them to be in the the big one. I think the other one would be the cost that it would take to Aaron auto in terms of a trade. Not because you're not worried about him being a great player he's amazing amazing but because he has that opt out after two years two more years on that deal so you know I've heard people say well they negotiate him to drop the opt-out and that's great great in theory. But why would he do that. I wouldn't do that. You wouldn't do that. None of us would do that. He worked for that EP leverage for it so he could be maybe tack on another year to the deal and get him to do it. But here's the thing nulla notice frustrated in Colorado because he wants to win win a world series that opt out gives him the best chance to win a world series because he'll be gable to open up his door to every team and compete with with without restrictions at free agency if he outperforms the deal he hasn't thinks he can make more money money. Orders have a better shot to win so the cardinals are hesitant to give away what it takes to get that kind of player when he has that kind of opt out now people said well. What about Paul Goldschmidt? And that's fair. The cardinals have had success with these kind of deals Paul Goldschmidt his career arc was at a much further place down the line. The no-one Arranhado was that's the big thing is Erin does in his prime in should still be in it. Paul Goldschmidt was at his peak perhaps on the downward slope of it still awesome employer. And I think he's going to be better this year. But there's a difference. We've talked about a thirty thirty one year old and a twenty eight year old Henderson water. Cutting bringing you Ben Fred. Fridays Ben Frederickson of the Saint Louis Post dispatch. Then you think about what's the cost I'd be really interested to see what that would hall from the cardinals perspective. You know and you're talking Nolan Gorman Talking Dylan Carlson immediately you would have to think of your the rockies and then you've got a plethora of outfielders are they interested it in any of those guys. What about some of the pitching the cardinals? Have they have good. Young pitching You're talking about a player and I was visiting with One one of the most esteemed in the country the other night about this. He in his opinion he thinks Nolan. Aeronautical is the best defensive third baseman ever and I said well Scott Rolen was pretty darn good in. I never thought I'd say this but Aaron Auto might be better and I can't believe I'm saying that because he's that good so my point in is the The hall for this guy is going to be incredible and I. I don't know what the cardinals have to offer I know what they have to offer. I just don't know if they go down that road to give them that much to get him. And how much is that going to cost. And then the you know and then you factor in the cardinals have always said if you trade for a guy who has one year left on his deal then you have to make the trade with the with the you know feeling in your gut that it's Oh it's still a good trait. If he walks after that year now they did that with Paul Goldschmidt and they they turn around and sign the extension like that and they also traded guys who were good players they are also had backfield's for them you know they had Ed Carson. Kelly was blocked by Yati and Kisner was rising You had luke weaver who was kind of in the mix but they had a lot of pitcher so there wasn't one guy you go. Oh my God I can't can't believe we. We let him go. If you give up you know Dylan Carlson if you give up potentially no Gorman than that could maybe be that guy now is he still worth trading for a superstar in the present. Now perhaps the the report from Jeff Passan was interesting. Because it it said that of all the teams the Rockies rockies have you know just down ideas off of with and talk with about this potential trade. They really liked the cardinals system with the cardinals. Could offer and I I completely see why because if you're Colorado how do you not like Dakota Hudson. WHO's a ground ball pitcher and young in that ballpark? How do you not like maybe even a guy like Harrison Baiter who who could have more power Colerado where you got to have a good defense? Cover a ton of ground in the outfield. Maybe his offense takes up so you know. That's I can see why the by the the rockies would be interested in what the cardinals have offer now doesn't mean they're going to get. They would get everything they wanted or they're going to you. Probably not I I. If you had to put me on the seat today and see what happens. I think we're having this conversation again at the at the trade deadline. And I think that would give the rockies time to see if they can compete. You know because they're still. They're not a bad team. They haven't done anything this off season but they're not a terrible team. That would give them to see where they fit into this competitive landscape and twenty twenty. It would give the cardinals time to hopefully get that bounce back from carpenter that they're hoping four They could they could see how that plays out a little bit but this conversation is fascinating because us out on it and it would make so much sense because there's something just doesn't fit with what the cars are doing this off season. They're they seem content to let Marcello sooner go unless he agrees to a deal as of their liking and they're just kind of putting a lot of hope on handful of talented young guys but guys you haven't been proven and the offense has been so it was so unreliable last year like the fans are going. Something's not adding up in this era. Nado thing you can see how that could be the Peace Henderson and water.
