"So that's what I think about that. Although having seen the challenge system in the fall league Ben. Yeah, I know you're on portrait. I'm right. I'm right about this. I'm not always right. I am often wrong, in fact, and I have gotten better at admitting that as I have aged, but I'm right about the challenge system it is, it is lickety split, it is clear, you know, it's gonna add a whole new little wrinkle to what guys can do to be valuable, you know, whether it's the hitter recognizing what his zone should be or the catcher, the picture. I'm just like, it's gonna be so fun. Everyone should get excited about how fun it would be. It is the perfect way to split the wickets. I don't know what they are. Thread the needle. The actual expression. So yeah, and you know, who knows if we had been able to see that challenge system in action, would he have remained perfect? I don't know. I'm excited to find out about these things. I think it would be funny to see an umpire really try to press the point, you know, plead his case. You won't do that because there's a whole idea to have a go fast. But I just think that we should embrace the challenge system. It's the right way to do it. Right. That's right. Yeah. You've persuaded me, I think I was initially resistant. Yeah, I'm on board, I think, as a good compromise solution. And look, a Ho burg, as noted pretty young guy, one of the younger umps and you definitely do see that on the whole, the younger umps conform more to the rulebook strike zone, which is not necessarily a function of their age so much as when they came up. They came up during this era where umpires are all graded based on the system and they didn't develop some idiosyncratic zone of their own prior to that. And so you do see that the younger I'm sort of the more recently arrived tend to be more accurate as we grade these things now. And so because umpires on the whole are more accurate than they used to be and presumably getting more and more accurate maybe as the umps who predated these systems gradually leave the game and you see just more and more conformity and everything like we've reached a point where I feel like it's pretty good, like no one's ever going to be satisfied completely, especially because we have a K zone on the screen constantly. We have replays. We can see and replay in infinite number of times every mistake. And it is frustrating when there is some pivotal call that seems to go the wrong way. I get that, but I'm hiring even though we complain about it, probably as much as ever, if not more, just because it's just the errors are so accessible to us. I think I'm firing is better than it has ever been. And so the need for robots at least sort of in an abstract sense is probably less acute than it ever has been, but what we've talked about that many times, I'm sure we will talk about it many more times to come as we get closer to one of the systems being implemented. I understand both sides all sides, but I just wanted to appreciate what happened here and pat hoberg on the biggest stage. The biggest game of his life. If only Justin Verlander could be more like pat hope. So yeah, shots at JV. So it helps to combat the really egregious missed calls challenge system. Yeah, exactly. All right, well, we're not done with this topic. We will be back with Ethan to break it down and even more detail and talk about how all of this happened on his end and how these things are calculated, et cetera. It's a fun conversation, I think. So yes, the World Series. As we speak here on Monday afternoon, it's not all about pat hober. It's also about the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies. What? Yeah, yeah, I know. We can give some airtime to them too. They were not perfect, but no. We can still acknowledge their imperfect contributions. The series is split as we speak. We are waiting now for a weather update. As for game three and maybe we will get one as we are recording here. It's a forecast looking a little iffy as we speak, but you are the listener, know how that turned out as you're whisking, so we can talk a bit about games one and two. I guess just to get it out of the way, just a couple of non World Series news items. So Nolan Arenado is staying with St. Louis. Yeah. They're bringing the band back, keeping the gang together. We talked about Adam Wainwright, re signing for one more year. Is now back with the Cardinals for several more years. So he had the opportunity to opt out and I would guess that the rate of opting out when players have the option to opt out, probably they have more often than not. I don't know what the percentage is, but often they opt out, but he has chosen now back to back winters, not to opt out. Now last winter, it was less in doubt because he was coming off a relative down year by Nolan Arenado standards. This year, he was coming off a potential MVP year, and so there was more doubt about whether he would stay, but he decided to. So he's got a 144 million coming to him over the final 5 years of the deal. I think the rockies are on the hook for about 31 and a half million of that. So sorry rockies, you're not getting out of your application. But this is a deal where I'm sure the cardinals are happy to have him right because he's only 31. He's coming off an incredible year. He is on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He's basically a top ten third baseman in his career to this point through this age. And now they get him with the rockies covering him. I mean, this would be less than he would get on the open market period when denson borski ran the numbers, which J chaffe had in his piece about this at fangraphs. I think he had him at 6 years and a 180 million is what he would be due, according to zips. And so not only are the Cardinals getting him at a discount compared to that, but the rockies are sitting a good deal of the bill as well. So seems great for the cardinals. This is not the first time that a cardinal has decided to stay put, elected to stay with that organization, perhaps that is a testament to the organization to its consistent competitiveness, you know, Nolan Arenado was with seemingly a directionless organization with Iraqis who would not surround him with the talent to get him to the playoffs and field competitive teams and now he's with the Cardinals where they do do that basically you're in and you're out. So you can sort of see why he might be happy there. So the Cardinals have their whole infield essentially locked up for years to come and I would well for them and forecast continued competitiveness for the Cardinals for some time to come. I would imagine. Yeah, well, and I think it's an interesting, you know, it gives us interesting insight.

"Nothing here cardinals and the pitch two cools has hit deep down the left field line. Towards the wall and it is gone. A Grand Slam for Albert Pujols. It's number 6 hundred. Okay, first off, didn't shitting with the bases loaded up 6 nothing in the third inning is a mood. I appreciate that, Ollie marvel. And listen, you have to take advantage of what Albert Pujols is these days and what he is is he's raking in his final season. Just crushing it. Let's acknowledge Albert Pujols as best used in a limited role in the role that Ali marl the manager in John mosaic, the Cardinals president, have drawn up for him, is awfully compelling. Listen to this, in Albert Pujols is 45 plate appearances since the all star break. He is slashing four 15 four 67 8 54. That is an OPS of 1320. Do you know who among all the players in baseball with at least 40 plate appearances have a better OPS than that? The answer is nobody. Aaron judge, second half OPS, 1301, Shohei Ohtani ten 20. He's been awesome in the second half. Not as good as pool holes in his limited sample, Paul Goldschmidt Nolan Arenado, same thing goes. Alex Bregman will talk actually I was going to say we'll talk more about him later, but we can talk about him now because the Houston Astros on the day that the Chicago White Sox came to an agreement with Elvis Andrews to try and stabilize their shorts opposition stabilize their season the Houston Astros went and played bully and they hung the White Sox by their underwear on a wedgie nail. The final score was 21 to 5 and Alex Bregman was in the middle of all of it. Pitched to Bregman.

"That's the analysis. For me saying, you only have 35 bits in here, you know, the thing is you're not going to be very good. Even if they're home runs. Now what if there's a situation where I guess there's a situation where you need a home run basically to win, I guess. And he's guaranteed to hit a home run? Well, no, he's still not guaranteed to hit a lot of home runs. He's a good home run hitter. So there are certain situations where sometimes all you need to do is put the ball in play and in other situations you need a big fly, so is this guy keeping around for the rare situation where, I don't know, like you're chilling by a lot of runs or where he might hit a home run. Yeah, or even like you're down by a run and it's two outs and it's the bottom of the 9th and so you're basically asking, what probability threshold do you have to pass on a per blade appearance basis for this hitter for him to be roster purely for the home run potential is what you're asking. Yeah, in some limited cases. I think there might be some value if you had the spare rest or spot if we have restrictions on an active pitchers and you have room for actual bench players and dedicated pinch hitters. I could see some situation where maybe you'd just like you need the guy who can give you dingers and nothing else, but it would be a luxury to carry him, I think. What if instead you had a bunch of guys who could hit like say doubles fairly often and you just roster guy because then you know you're gonna score a run because they hit a double and then he goes. Yeah, that could work. All right, well somewhat similar, we got a question from Ethan. Forget whether we've answered some version of this previously, possibly we have, but he says with the NL having now adapted the DH we are left with only a single two way player so that raises the question for me at least if baseball went all the way and adopted 90 H's per team, how many players in baseball would remain two way players at all if a team had the option of having 9 hitters and 9 fielders and let's assume for now that we adjusted raster sizes and rules to accommodate this with teams end up having these 9 players be completely different. This is basically how it works in the NFL, of course, where essentially zero players play both offense and defense would this be the result in baseball. Obviously, if the rule were implemented tomorrow, we would not see this happen since there would need to be an adjustment period. But once the rule was entrenched and around for a decade or two, do you think anyone would end up both hitting and fielding? Would anyone even be good enough? How many people are genuinely one of the 300 best hitters and 300 best fielders available? Huh. I don't know. Yeah, I wouldn't want this to happen and I think that the idea is that the universal TH is like a slippery slope to this sort of scenario. I think that's overblown because pitchers are their own entity when it comes to offense, even compared to catchers or shortstops. So I don't think we're in any danger of this happening. I wouldn't want this to happen, don't need it to happen because no other position embarrasses itself. Well, batting as often as pitchers did. But if this were to happen, one argument for it, I guess, would be that, well, you'd get to see the very best baseball at all times, right? Because you would not have to stick someone out there in the field just because they're a good bet. You could get the best glove out there. And also still have the best bat, so you would see very high caliber baseball. You'd never have someone who was playing because of something else they did well, and you're just living with the thing that they don't do well. It would be someone who does everything well at all times, so the question is how many of those players are there who do everything well or at least enough things well that they would still be playable in this scenario. I don't know. That's not a satisfying answer. I'm like thinking about the offensive environment. Yeah, I mean, you've got better defenders out there, but you have the best. If you're Christian Pasha, this sounds great, right? Because you just play the field, you don't have to worry about the fact that the swing and miss might. Be disqualifying, right? So yeah, this is going to juice offense, I think, but I think that there would certainly be some think of some of the best defenders in buxton. Yeah, they are often some of the best hitters too. Like Byron buxton. Yeah, very buxton, the Nolan Arenado. Chapman. Sometimes maybe he's not one of the best hitters anymore. Formerly Matt Chapman. Formerly both of the mets. Yeah, sure. There are definitely a lot of triple-A shortstop for a short stop glove guys who can't hit who would be better than some of the major league shorts. And so they would be benched. They would only be heading it would only be heading but I gotta say, gosh, I guess the easiest way to put a percentage on this or if we save 300 if we take his numbers here, Ethan's 300 hitters in fielders like how many of them are the same guy? I don't know. I may go as high as the thing is that how many offensive guys do you think there are?.

"To me, it's almost like I appreciate the everyday the mundane shohei, the run of the mill days when he just does both things without doing them at that level or in such close proximity that everyone has to set up and take notice because right now on that aforementioned combined war leaderboard, he is 12th now. Which is pretty impressive because again, I guess there's a perception that his season has been disappointing, I would say he's been well above average as both a better and a pitcher, but a little below his MVP pace from last season, and yet because he is good at both of those things and because he constantly plays, he is just almost inevitably going to be one of the most valuable players in baseball, even if he is not necessarily producing at the absolute peak of his powers that we saw last year. And maybe he gets back there over the course of the rest of the season, but even if he doesn't, if it's just, oh yeah, well, he's not performing quite at that level, and yet he is still on a very short list of the most valuable players baseball. And even before that two game run when I was looking at that leaderboard, he was still in the top 20 or so. He just vaulted onto that. He was kind of there even when we weren't talking about him that much. Yeah, and you know, I think that even though we are into the end of June now, you know, we can note things like the fact that the three players who are immediately ahead of him on that combined were leader board are .1 wins at him. Tommy Edmund is .2 Paul Goldschmidt is .3, Mike Trout is .4. He's start to get into more than a win's worth of delta when you get up to Machado and close with Devers and dredge, but to say he is 12th is also to say that he is functionally as valuable as a couple of the guys ahead of him. It's just such a tiny margin. It's well within the sort of error bars of war. But yeah, this is one of the incredible things about this guy where if he is able to play regularly and remember when we were so worried about Otani's durability for a long while there and now it's like he's been really consistent in terms of his ability to be on the field. Like the floor is just going to be really high because he is able to do both of these things. Like you said at the beginning of this segment like, well, anyone can hit well, and it's like, no, they can't. It's actually really, really hard to do that in a lot of guys are bad at it. So to be able to produce at the level that he is on both sides, it's just always going to build in a baseline value to the angels that is going to be pretty impressive. And sometimes we get to see it on display to an extreme degree where everyone kind of perks up and it's like, I guess I'm tuning into the angels and the royals, a thing I did not anticipate happening on my Wednesday. But even when he's not quite that on or spectacular, like he is just incredibly valuable to them as a team and what he's able to do for them is pretty special. Yeah, I guess in the interest of fairness, if we're pointing out that he is barely behind some other players who are just ahead of them on the board. Yeah, he's barely ahead of dance Swanson who we're going to have to have a conversation about Dan's V Swanson because sir, Dan is to be swatted. Big year for walker players. And that generally, but with him in judge. Yeah, I think the most of that. I think we were recording this on Thursday afternoon, I think he hit two more home runs today. Swanson's just having a heck of a time and he's only a Scotia head of Nolan Arenado and Bryce Harper and sandy uncle kandara and Freddie Freeman, but he is in a select tier of player at this moment. And he certainly has fellows in that tier, including Taylor ward. Maybe the way that you can remember is to first navigate to the combined war leader board and whichever of them you see here is Taylor ward because it's certainly not Tyler way note that. Yeah, it's tough for him, I guess, to be overshadowed in that way by someone who is also on his team. But yeah, I feel bad asking you to praise ohtani yet again because it's like when on the angels postgame right after the game, the sideline reporter on the angels broadcast almost inevitably will ask whichever player is being interviewed about Otani because of course Otani doesn't really do many interviews and so every other angel is in the position of having to speak for him or speak about him at least. People are always asking him about ohtani. And so whoever it is who had the big game and gets pulled over to talk to TV right afterward inevitably there will be like a couple of questions about what they did in that game or what the team did and then it'll be like, what can you say about Shohei Ohtani in this game? And then I feel like the players, there's like a bingo card almost of what they will always say. It's like you just sit back and watch and you just can't believe what he's doing out there and there's no one like him and he's one of a kind and you just have to pinch yourself watching him day in and day out. They all have exactly the same rote response because they've all been asked about him so so many times. And there are only so many things you can say, although hopefully we have come up with some original things and you kind of team me up because one thing I wanted to mention, the playing time, that to me, I think continues to be the most impressive single stat. Yeah. Obviously, you can point to how hard he throws and how hard he hits and how fast he runs and all of that. The physical tools, but the durability, the availability, that to me, dwarfs every other player. This is an era where we're getting increasing specialization, we're getting more attention to rest or load management, even position players, or taken more days off, and then you have pictures who are pitching fewer and fewer innings individually, and meanwhile, ohtani's out there being basically a full-time hitter and almost a full-time pitcher within the constraints of the 6 pitcher rotation. And he is racking up just ungodly amounts of playing time. So one of my favorite stats about his MVP year was that he had 1172 combined plate appearances and batters faced last year. And that was the most that any player had had in a single season since Randy Johnson in 1999, which was obviously mostly batters faced as a pitcher, no one else this century this millennium had accrued that much playing time and I knew that Otani doesn't really play the field. He deh is most of the time when he's not pitching, so maybe that removes some of the stress, but still when you watch angels games, if you watch angels games, he's kind of always there. Because he is either pitching or hitting just all the time and he very rarely takes a day off and this year because you have the ohtani rule so he can keep dehing when he leaves the game as a pitcher and because you have the universal DH, so if there's an inter league game, he doesn't have to sit. He can still start. He's getting even more playing time. He's on pace for a new high. So so far entering Thursday, he has 298 plate appearances as a hitter, 273 batters faced as a pitcher. If you combine those and project it out, giving him the same percentage of playing time over the rest of the season that he has had thus far. He's on pace for 1284 .75 combined plate appearances plus batter's face..

"We need to do one thing before we move on from this idea, which is, we should probably talk about Nolan Arenado a little bit, don't you think? Yeah, okay. Go ahead. I just wanted to point out the Nolan Arenado is good. So development. Not a new development, but like when you're looking at the top of art. So like right now, Manny Machado also good is leading among qualified hitters is leading the fan graphs or leaderboard for position players at 2.6. Give them enough credit. Machado amazing. Machado definitely amazing and you know, he's hitting three 74, four 47, 6 57. He has a two 15 WRC plus he's already hit 7 home runs. He also has a four 11 babbit which we might imagine will not sustain itself, but you know, but there's Manny Machado, being Manny, being good, which is excellent for the Padres must feel so nice for them to be where they are after the just hellacious year they had last year. But there's still an aeronaut. The winner and second in fan grafts wore three 48 four 26 6 74 for two 14 WRC plus, he's playing his usual superlative defense. He has a much more normal babip, which whatever. But he also has 7 home runs. So I just, I feel like we should note that Nolan Arenado remains good at baseball and that he has really sort of risen to the occasion after that initial year in St. Louis where he was fine. He was a good player, you know? When you play defense like Nolan Arenado, you always are going to have some margin for error when you're hitting like when you have a one 13 WRC plus, which is respectable, but not amazing, but right now he's just really locked in and hitting the snot out of the ball. So I would say Nolan Arenado still good at baseball. We have not yet reached the point of stats stabilization because Mike drought is currently fourth. But I will, I will take a leaderboard that has Manny Nolan Arenado José Ramírez Mike Trout and Aaron judges as its top 5. That's, you know. It's a cool sport that we get to watch. It's really, it's really pretty delightful that we get to do that. Who would you guess Ben? Among qualified hitters has the highest strikeout rate right now. We're going to do some fun. We're going to rapid fire. Are you ready? Goodness. Who has you won't guess? It's fine. Okay. You won't guess. All right. Treadmill Reyes. Okay. I mean, like you might guess that he strikes out a little bit. But he does check out. Do you know who is walking the most right now? This will not surprise you. It's Juan Soto 19.2% of the time. Max muncy up there with 18.7 good for you. You bringing up a Machado and Ariana reminds me that I wrote an article for grantland back in June 2015 titled who you got. Baltimore's many Machado or Colorado's Nolan Arenado, and I picked those names because they rhymed kind of in the headline scheme. I don't remember why I picked them, I guess so they were being compared at that point. It was like the Soto versus it could be of that era was much out of NATO. I don't really remember if I picked a side, but I guess there was no wrong answer there. Because there's still awesome, 7 years later. So there's that. I guess it looks like I took Machado to the extent that I chose a side. I cited some zips projections and rest of career war, Machado was hired to that point. Where are they career war wise to date if you could tell me that? I remember that there was an article I read over the off season or maybe in spring training about how Ariana had made some swing changes or tinkered with his approach at the plate after last year. And I was like, hey, you hit 34 dingers, you know? Most players said they have a season like that. They're not going to go back to the drawing board, but nor are not. He has tie standards. And so he changed some things and evidently those changes have paid off because he and Machado both been fantastic, but to date. I guess. Arenado is at 40.6 fan grafts. And Manny's at 41 points. But could that be closer? Well I think that didn't Machado come up. He came up in 2012 and I came up in 1320 13. So let me just do this from 2013 on. It's exactly the same. Exactly the same, really? 2013 to 2022, they've both been worth exactly 40.64. Their WRC plus is separated by three points. What a cool. Oh my gosh, I'm gonna enjoy this for a second. I didn't realize that the stolen base gap was as big as it is. That is kind of surprising to me. So aeronautics hit two 89, three 46, 5 83, Machado has hit two 89, three 42, four 93, aeronautic has a three 6 9 Machado has a three, 5, three, Arenado. One 20 WRC plus Machado one 23, but yeah, they are bang on from a war perspective from 2013 to 2022. Yeah, and Machado is a little over a year younger than our NATO so you can factor that into the rest of career projections..

"Two O pitch and that's hit hard down the right field line and it is fair and going to the corner. Arenado scores. And here comes run number two that's Dickerson and a triple for Dylan Carlson and the red birds tack on two more. It's 8 four St. Louis. I was Ricky Horton on the Cardinals radio network. Now, JD Davis was hit by a pitch in the foot. No one would suggest he was on purpose, but this was after earlier in the series, four other mats had been hit by pitches, so Nolan Arenado came to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning. Here was the first pitch. First pitch from Lopez high and tight ball one. Renato looks back out at the mound. And he's got some words to say. Now the whole point umpire Jeremy reacts. Trying to hold him back to benches are clearing our NATO just shoved neato out of the way and now some pushing and shoving happening between the pitcher's mound and home plate. As these two teams have had a lot of hit batsman between them Ariana got shoved out of the way and now Alonso has just been dragged to the ground. Here the first base side Alonzo is being held back, I believe by Albert pools. Now the bullpens are empty and Yadier Molina who knows Tomas nido pretty well. Both are from Puerto Rico. Nido being held back by melina because nido was the one who was thrown to the ground by our NATO. It was actually the first base coach Debbie clap who was holding Alonso from the pile as now cooler heads have prevailed by show Walters out there. The umpires are in the middle. And yoan Lopez going high and tied to a NATO. He was not happy with it. The Yadier Molina and Pujols are also in the middle of it. Just.

"Pictures are still going to kind of win the day in the end, But hitters have really started to catch up a little bit more as the weather's gotten warmer, and maybe that's not a coincidence, But I just think we have to watch. You know how the hitters react. How the pictures react the second half of the season, ESPN Sim Kirk should greatly appreciate it, Tim, you're gonna be working the National League. Dug out tonight as we continue to count down to first pitch for the 91st Major League Baseball All Star game. Of course, a couple of the storylines that we're keeping an eye on tonight. Obviously Shohei Otani right off the bat, but let's not forget for the National League, their third baseman. It's coming home. The third baseman the starting third basement tonight for the NL batting third for Dave Roberts is No. One. Erin Otto, now of the ST Louis Cardinals earlier today, he spoke with Marly Rivera, No. One Is it bittersweet to be here at course, field as an all start with a different uniform. You just enjoy the same. I'm just enjoying the same. Me. It's a little different, obviously, for sure. It's definitely different. But I mean, just being here also arguments just an, um little feeling and I'm so fortunate to be here and I love it when you are in this lineup, right and you're going to get to face Shohei Otani because you're early on, there's going to be like Do you have a technique? What have you thought? Were you watching him? What is it about Shohei? And are you looking forward to seeing this venom? Finally in a game? Absolutely. You know, I think I remember we face in the spring training 18 his very first outing, spring training, And then that was it. I made some sense. You know, I'll try to get the wind up down on deck and try to really see it. But, you know, I know he's really good. He's going to be a battle. But I gotta be ready Hit because I don't wanna give him too much. What's the most special part of being an All star? What is it about this week and this day? That is special for you guys. I think she's been with the elite of the elite, you know, and hanging out with all these guys hanging on the kitchen eating talking about game just those little things are so much fun and so special. And, um, you know you don't you don't don't take them for granted. You know, I love coming here and I love hanging out with all these guys and watching them work. It's amazing. Is there anyone that you wanted to meet that you've got to have a conversation with? I know a lot of you guys have been around for a while. So you know a lot of these guys. Anyone who wants to have a conversation you've gotten to do it. Well, you know, a lot of the guys. I mean, on our side. I feel like I've known a lot of these guys play along for a long time. I've always had conversations. I'm excited to watch parties. I'll be on the same side as him. Um and seeing live in action offices him always like Browning. Third, and I'm always tired of it. But now I'm excited to be on his team and watch him play. He's gonna be fun to watch. But obviously JD over there on their side is amazing Hitter. I love Bogart's man. He's been unbelievable this series one of my favorites to watch, so there's a lot of guys, I mean, enjoy. Well, you know, the ale has had the upper hand on the N L lately. Yeah. What do you think is gonna happen today? Do we have a prediction from Nolan Arenado? Hope we win. I think we need to win. I think everyone eight in a row right this second. That's getting that's out of control. It's time. It's time for a change. And I believe that we have a chance to do it today at his Nolan Arenado forming of the Colorado Rockies and was an offseason trade from Colorado to ST Louis, the Cardinals sending five prospects back in return to the Rockies today. No. One out of an hour. No. One Erin Outta returns to Chorus Field. He's batting third for the National League All Stars, and he's hitting in the third spots playing third base now with the ST Louis Cardinals, formerly of the Rockies, back in course, field before tonight's 91st Midsummer Classic..

And you know, these guys are talking. You know, these guys are talking and you know that. Conversations being had player to player. For sure not having to stop down the halls was definitely weird. And Yeah, I mean it. It didn't feel right. That's for sure. It was definitely different things you know, last night. Clearly you can see that there's a huge bond that's still here with many of the Colorado Rockies. If you were talking to Trevor story about what's going on with him. What advice would you give him? Nolan? You know, I think I would just give him advice. The best. You know his head. Do whatever you feel you need to do for you and your family. That's it. You know, I never swam Certain way for any reason at all. You know, that's not my place to do that. You know, if you know, I've always told him you know if you love it here today, if, uh, you know, obviously, that that's a long you know, because you love it doesn't mean it's going to be you know, he'll get done. "Wanna talk it over with the all star third baseman nolan. Arnaldo on the kilcoyne conversation. I know you've been an all star before. I'm just curious this year. I season saint. Louis did you. I wouldn't say pressure but did you feel any kind of desire to perform well at this level being new this year in saint louis Yeah i would say a little bit. I wouldn't say pressure just more wanting to get back to playing the way. I know i can especially after the twenty twenty season With being injured and just not performing very well With that being said in new team knew everything so you know it can be a little different in you know. It's an adjustment regardless if you know if it's a big adjustment or small it's still an adjustment something different you know. I've been doing something. I've been doing the same thing for eight years. And then all of a sudden guide to a totally different thing you know so it was. There's an adjustment. I'm definitely used to it now. And i love every part of it but It's been really good kind of crazy on worked up to an all star which is nothing new but it happens to be at coors field will be fun for you. Yeah it'll be fun. I mean it'll be interesting. You know we just got. We just went there. We just played them so it was a pretty exciting agassi. Lot of motion and You know just kind of a log on and It was a lot of fun but It will be cool. It'd be great to go back. You know i love colorado so to spend a few more days there will be really great and you said going into that night on thursday. You know there might be boozed or where did you really think there'd be of and it was. It was pretty much a love fest and even when you left your any fans view. Were you really curious going into that first game. Yeah i was a little curious. I figured you know. I was hopeful. I figured there'd be more applause than Than booze but there are still some booze but not as many which was great but You know i you know you just never know when you're going in that situation you know you just sometimes you think they you'd think about what happened recently but it was good to know that they remember what's happened in the past and when you leave coors he were immediately going to say well. Let's see what numbers look. Like larry walker talked about it and holidays talked about it and you heard that your whole career people wondering who would you be doing. Yeah i've heard that whole career You know it's just something you have to deal with being a rockies player on leaving and it comes with the territory i guess but I mean it's not easy playing colorado. I think people sometimes think it's just such a great place to hit and you're gonna hate regardless but which it is hit but you know the physical toll the games..

"Normally we spent a little bit of time the buildup explaining what the interviews without who the interview subject might be I think what i say. We're gonna talk to nolan arnaldo in advance of the cards cubs wrigley weekend before he heads the all star game. I don't think we really need to say a whole lot else. Nolan came over in the offseason deal. Massive deal for the franchise and we talk about what he expected in saint louis. What he was told by matt holliday before he got to saint louis his plan on sticking around. Even though there is the opt-out option the fact that when he was in the minor leagues he was known as a bad. The glove conversation sort of came later. That was not part of his. Early resume is were in the minor leagues. I talked about his excitability. You see him just kind of fiery the emotion that he shows he did not play football. I pictured him sort as the quarterback yelling at the receiver trump and the ball or maybe the safety hard hitting safety. Come up with a big play. Said he didn't play high school football because his mom wouldn't let him so. The kilcoyne conversation is nolan are arnaldo cardinal player who has lived up to the hype and then some on pace for thirty plus homers hundred. Plus rb is he'll be in the starting lineup. The all star game next week. You'll see it on fox sixth all-star appearance four-time voted in as a starter. And i think the ninth gold glove is probably on. Its way he is. He's been as advertisers. No doubt the cardinals. First half has been disappointing. Nolan are arnaldo has not been. So this.

"Us to check in. With our Hall of Fame baseball writer and Rockies insider Tracy Wrinkles be of inside the seams dot com Tracy Always great to have you. Thank you. Well, it's great to be here. Let's first talk about the return of Nolan Ah, Renato, regardless of how things ended. The fact of the matter is Nolan did amazing things with the Rockies. And while it's different to see him here with the Cardinals There's no denying what he accomplished in purple is there? No, I mean, here's a fan favorite. He played hard every day. He played his heart earlier I've ever seen day in and day out. A little bit different personality, But you know, all of us have a little bit different personality, right? We're not all the same, but I think he, uh, he gave Iraqis everything that could possibly give him when he was here, and he reached the point where he wanted to move on. Um, it's not the first guy on earth that did it, And so the Rockies accommodated him, and then they deal with ST Louis. Do they get everything they wanted to return? No. When a player has a no trade, cause he's going to have control. Over where he goes, and you know, I think with Gamber alone they did fairly well and they got a pretty good starting pitcher right there. But, you know, I think it's great to see the fans welcome him back.

"Why do you believe in miracles. Colfax dreams do come true to those that. Ask for it. I guess yes. I do believe in miracles. Well then you will believe this story question at all. The jaguars are planning to sign. T t t quarterback turn tight end. Tim tebow signing a one year deal. That could be official in the next week or so. Nothing done yet. But he'll have a chance to make the team to reunite with his mentor and college. Head coach. urban. Meyer ian rapoport with a check mark next to tweet twitter handle posted that moments ago excited gimmick or. I think it's pretty cool. It's cool comeback story. Exactly he's coming back as a as a tight end so you don't have to hear all the why is it. Called capita as a quarterback tiba wasn't very good quarterback so he decided if you've ever wasn't gonna make comeback he's gone as a tight end and why not do it with his old head coach urban meyer where he was the most successful in florida. As long as it's not denver. I'm good with it because the circus around tibo in denver was was annoying. So i always said that during the tibo mania stuff i was like i like watching him play. He's entertaining but the fans were annoying as hell. So i wanna see that elsewhere. Where i don't have to deal with fans i don't have to deal with it so i'm good watching it from afar. I just remember like the defense would be playing. There are off for ninety percent of the game. Tiba was skipping rocks out. There couldn't complete anything and they make like four good plays and that would win the game. Ultimately they'd be down fifteen nothing they'd come back and then people will just post tibo. Yeah and i'm like. What what i remember talking to mitch and ryan you know the old eaten red wyoming cowboy denver bronco He's like dude. It was like just so tough because we'd be exhausted in the locker room after our defense just completely gave it all to keep us in this game and tibo would make like eight plays in the fourth quarter and all of the media was all over him and it was all tibo all all the time so it was frustrating. But you know what tables a good dude. He i love what he stands for An amazing human being. He's going to get a shot. Tryout great tight end and we've always said this tibo should have tried to be tight. End premiere has the poll there. So we'll see he's gonna be in a competition and again nothing official just yet but he is back in the nfl. He's for the moment. At least dixon says brady. You're being too soft on colfax. He needs to learn as less than like not picking kansas and unlv or whatever to win the whole thing. Maybe he'll take it more seriously if he does have to sit on the roof and the snow i think he took it pretty seriously. You just lost. That happens happens. I didn't lose the whole thing just among startle office group right. Yeah didn't know he wasn't last. Yeah no totally good. No we'll plus a million times and we don't want to get the sign wet my friend i mean i'm not gonna go up there without the sign i mean you gotta have the sign that says you lost the whole show challenge market bracket whatever. The hell it's called. You gotta go up with the sign and we don't want to ruin that. So how about that news. That's crazy colefax. Might game of the week this week. I don't do this often. Game of the week presented by auto alert downturn. Not downtown kinda downtown really. I'm interested in this i am. This is intriguing to me monday night. Hockey all by goodness. I'm saying hockey. He got the colorado avalanche. You got the las vegas golden knights. This is the biggest game in all of hockey in the final week. Before the playoffs. The division leading knights win at t mobile arena. They win the west. And they clinched the presidents trophy with the league's best record and we'll have home ice advantage so playoffs if the avs win regulation tonight and then sweep the los angeles kings which they should in the final two games of bala arena. They win the west and the presidents trophy so the key number for the avs dorito although you gotta do it against golden knights in regulation so say this often. Let's go colorado avalanche..

I should say just before the series started. Yeah Kind of weird You know different motions little anxiousness a little bit. I guess in a way you know. It'll be cool to see some of the guys that i got. I mean i'm really close with and and stuff like that. You know there's some guys. I definitely know miss just in general people Who became really good friends with me. It's a little different but you know at the end of the day. It's it's another series series. We wanna win. It's cardinals was the rockies. And i think that's the big picture just kind of trying to focus on that. I love my moment colorado. I loved everything. I've played with excitement. I feel like it gave fans something to cheer for. I wasn't miserable. Twenty twenty was just a tough year in general being heard and just frustrating. There's nolan talking about it. I mean he's pretty politically correct. Saying all the right things. I think there was a couple of notes to even longer and longer press coverage where he had mentioned. You know the media cada spun a few things you know. He didn't really. I mean he. He did talk to the media. He was kind of short. He was sure. I didn't think the media spun much of that. I didn't think they really report on a lot of what nolan had to say. You also said he was a big fan of our pool hosts and was hoping he would get back. So i was like okay sometimes. It's more disrespectful when you don't say things about collar when you don't talk about the rockies but nonetheless we gotta get over it nolan. 'let up the cardinals. 'let us up and swept the series again. No rockies game tonight. We postponed that. "Si si. I literally sat outside today in my backyard and returns to me e mails and just sat out there and got me some vitamin D today with that with that beautiful I mean, what a great Day. Here in Denver, right? This is the day that you need to bring in a guy like the Sean watching for visit. Check it out. Just think this is January. She was, but this is February. Yes, This is February or February. 2nd everywhere. He's February 2nd, and there's no way this month, right? Isn't February. Is it? Mark? I think it's I think it's sometimes this February. Sometimes it's March, but it's usually It's usually around march, didn't I? By the way, didn't I make the bet in March last year, and I ended up getting completely jobbed? No, no, no, I think more like April was it. April April, 10th. Now that we're done with the snow, Yeah. Yeah, I will tell you that since you brought up to Shawn Watson. This is exactly how Houston fans are going to feel when they lose their quarterback. Mm. They're gonna lose him. I mean, this is exactly now they're gonna lose him. I also think that people around Major League baseball and we've been reading about it. People around Major League Baseball had been saying the Rockies air gonna lose Nolan Arenado and I think that Rockies fans have been like. No, no, no, no, no, There's no way that's gonna happen. Because Cause you're in your heart is in it. So I don't think that folks around Major League baseball were as surprised of the trade of Nolan Renato to the ST Louis Cardinals as Rockies fans were because I do think that you you look through purple colored glasses a little bit and you're like, I can't happen us. There's no way There's no way and that is exactly what Houston Texans fans are gonna be going through when they not only lose two, Shaun watchin, but JJ. What? As well Yep. But here's here's the difference between what's happening in Houston and what's happening here in the NFL does the salary cap Major league Baseball. There's no salary cap. So you know, whatever the player demands, and if you want to meet it, you can and you know there's a there's a penalty for, uh, you have a luxury taxes like anything else, but This is This is doggy dog. There's no balance to Major league baseball. There's no balance it all. So if you do it wrong, you know you're gonna have an issue. You could be a small market team like the Kansas City Royals and win a world Syriza's Playing small ball and making sure that you will have timely hits. Hey, the Tampa Bay Rays her a small market team if you want to really get into it, and there in the World Series last year, right, so So what we're talking about is management styles, though. I mean, it's hard to sustain it right. It's hard to sustain. That kind of excellence. But, you know, when you have the pieces, you can ramp up, right? I mean, that's always the case. And from what I heard from Jeff, brightest today, you know, he was like, Hey, man, look, you know They thought they had the pieces in 17 and 18 and 19. And it just didn't happen. It didn't happen the way that they thought it was gonna happen, And certainly it didn't happen last year, although it was a great start. Great start, but it was not a It was not a great finish. I mean, we We thought for sure. The Rockies we predicted what it was gonna look like going into that shortened season six to get in the bubble. We thought for sure that the Rockies we're going to do better than with a 26 and 34. Is that what I believe their record was 26 34? Yeah, I wonder. When Colorado Rocky fans are when Colorado Rocky fans are really thinking about this. Do they just understand? That we can't afford guys like that all the time. But when it's time for us to make a run, then we'll re acquire that kind of talent. But the ownership Can't commit to $260 million contract. That was just on them. That's on them. That's on them From the beginning, you know you committed to a 206 was a $290 million contract. It was ah, hole. I almost cut, but no, it was a lot of money. It was a ton of money and you but you made that commitment a long time ago. And now all of a sudden and look, but it wasn't that long ago. It was not that long ago and and I do think that You know that the tough thing that I the there is for me is it seems like Every move that they have made over the last Let's just say five years. Okay when it came to bring in people, too. Um what it came to bringing people to the team. How many of them worked out? How many of them truly worked out. I mean you like DJ LeMay human. That one hurt. Okay, let him leave. He became the batting champion. By the way will. He was wearing a Yankee uniform. That one hurt. He got better when he left, and they gave Murphy basically the same money. Right? Look, there's I think there's been a ton of There's been a ton of missteps, right?.
