"Tonight, the podcast. And this is a special edition of the baseball tonight podcast. We are taping this just an hour or so after the trade deadline and the evening of August 2nd. We've got Jeff pass in here. We've got Tim kirkton here, on buster only, Sarah Abbott, Taylor swank, are also in the room, producing with us. Good to see you guys in person for the first time ever. In real life, it's a pleasure boys. Very nice. Well, we got a lot to get to, and now Tim, you have a long drive. Jeff, you've been working harder than anybody. You gotta be exhausted at some point. So you ready to go? I'm just glad that I don't have to wear makeup to not look tired. Like I walk in before we go on TV and they say, what, you know, what do you need? And I'm like, I just need to not look tired, please. Well, just wait a few more years and they won't be able to do anything about that. I would know this. We always do the winners and losers at the trade deadline. The biggest winner is passing because the deadline is over. Yes. Buster, too. Slightly lesser degree you. We can all relax a tiny bit now. We're excited. And look, you know, in the past you've gone winners and losers. I'd rather just keep this topical. I'd rather throw out a topic and let's put some thoughts into each of these topics. And let's put a time limit on it, guys. 'cause they feel like each of these top we could talk about the Padres for the whole 20 minutes. Of course. We could talk about the Red Sox for the whole 20 minutes. So what we're going to do is we're going to put time limits on some of these topics. We'll start with a Padres because you have to start with a Padres who get one Soto and we're going to put four minutes on that one. Jeff, what do you think? They went out and got the hitter of his generation. They went out and got a future Hall of Famer. They went out and got a guy who I think when he's done is going to be one of the ten best hitters we have ever seen in their pairing him with Fernando Tatís Jr., pairing him with Manny Machado, Josh bell, brandy drew. Brandon drury, Jake cronin worth, Austin nola. Coming out of the pen. I mean, what AJ preller does is he is the epitome of someone who does not give a and you can fill in the blank however you want to he wants to go out and win and he's going to be the guy who, when he's up on a ski slope, he sees a little jump at the bottom and he's going to send it. That's how he lives his life. He just sends it all the time. He is fearless. He is brilliant. He never sleeps, he's wildly competitive, and he just got the two best hitters that were available this morning. Both of them, Josh bell and Juan Soto. He also had a brand jury. He's got a 5 20 slugging percentage and can play all over the field. And yesterday, he got the best closer in the game. The Padres went from a team that was going to make the playoffs to a team that could be very dangerous in October. Okay, I thought for sure you would say the same thing that you basically started the trade deadline special with saying that this trade wants Soto could be the biggest in baseball history. It could be when you look at the people involved, but mostly you look at the centerpiece. Have we ever seen a 23 year old player with this kind of track record and this kind of future traded three years before he can become a free agent? I don't think this has ever happened before and it happened today. The Padres clearly were the most motivated team. I'm curious to see if you agree with me on this. I thought, you know, as this was playing out and the nationals were trying to get their best deal, I thought there were two major bluffs being played one with a nationals indicating to other teams. Well, we might keep him past the deadline. I think there was a lot of internal pressure, ownership transfer, it was a bluff and you understand why Mike Rizzo was trying to posture that way because he wanted to keep his leverage up. And the other one was the Dodgers. You know, it felt like the Dodgers jumped in here to push the Padres. I don't think there was any chance that Andrew Freeman and this was pointed out to me by a couple of GMs. He doesn't give up his best prospects and deals. He will make great trades for big names, but like with the Mookie betts trade, the feeling was he didn't really give up that much. So the idea that he was going to give up a boatload of prospects, other teams were skeptical about that. I think the only reason that might have been the case is because not everyone he's trading for is one. That's the separator. That's the differentiator and not only is not everyone he's trading for Juan Soto, not everyone he's trading for is a 23 year old superstar. Who's cost control for the next two and a half years. If you look at him just through wins above replacement, he's going to put up what 15 to 17 over that period of time and he's going to get paid around $60 million. The way the Dodgers approach things is purely a marginal value thing. And the marginal value with 15 to 17 wins versus $60 million paid. There's an enormous delta there. And that's where the Dodgers, if they were to have chosen to have gone this route, would have been able to justify. And they didn't have to go this route because I won 24 of their last 29 games and they got they've got the best lineup still in the national league. They've got 5 pitchers coming off the injured list. They are loaded. They didn't have to do anything. So we will transition on the next topic. That's right. We're at three 38. I want to ask you, Jeff about the end of the trade deadline or in the last minutes of the trade deadline, because we've had so many examples through history where we find out about things that happen right at the end, you Darvish many Ramirez, no more Garciaparra. Randy Johnson. Yeah. What came across that jumped out of you at the end? Not any of those. To the brain. Okay, so raise hello Iglesias. Let's remember was a free agent and signed a big deal with the Los Angeles angels, four years, $58 million, gets traded in the first year by perimeno to the general manager of the Atlanta Braves for whom he worked before going to work for the angels alexandropoulos. And it bolsters a braves bullpen that already is among the best in baseball both statistically and death wise. And we were talking during the trade deadline show guys about the possibility of Spencer strider, maybe not being in the rotation in the postseason, but turning into some sort of like a two to three inning super reliever. The braves have set themselves up in position themselves so well to be even better this October than they were last October. And they won the World Series last year. And I love what the Phillies did at the end. They got Noah synagogue to add to a pretty decent rotation anyway. David Robertson stabilizes the bullpen. They upgraded their defense with Brandon marsh and others. So late the Phillies got better. So when I ask you about the cubs because we thought in those last minutes that they would be perhaps the most aggressive team, but they didn't. Listen, I will fully admit, I whiffed on thinking that there were enough teams out there that needed to upgrade.

"Right now slated to make more in 2022 than the Orioles, the pirates or the guardians, entire roster. How much money Max Scherzer is making? Okay, let's talk about the Texas Rangers in two days they committed more money and salary than they had the previous four seasons combined. What about the rangers adding Marcus Simeon and Corey Seager? Well, they might now have the best middle infield in baseball. Marcus Simeon had a tremendous year and that's two out of the last three. He's been a great player a tremendous Clubhouse guy and remarkable that how well he moved to second base last year when that is not an easy transition. Corey Seeger is still a terrific player. But let's keep in mind the rangers won 60 games last year. They got outscored by a 190 runs and I had a talent of evaluator tell me that other than a Dolly Garcia, they really don't have an everyday player on their team that can play on a maybe even an above 500 team. That's how he described the rangers offense, how short they were on position players. Well, they added two really good ones. Guys who are going to be there for a long time, they're going to stabilize and defensively and offensively and adding John grey to that rotation. Now they have to address their pitching, but for the rangers a tremendous first move. And if they can go from 60 wins to 75 with those three editions and others, that's a pretty big jump. In my like what the angels are trying to do this winter and that is the threat and needle on one hand up grade the pitching staff. You know, that's entirely their focus. And at the same time, not necessarily get locked into huge long-term contracts because at some point they're going to have to pay shohei Otani. What do you think of the angels? Well, I like what they've tried to do here. They got their clothes, raised yellow glaciers, which I think they had to do. They added Noah synagogue. We don't know what he's going to be like, given his health, but he's certainly worth a try at 21 million for one year. I think they have a chance to get better. I still don't think they're that far away if Otani has that year trout comes back and is the best player in baseball. Rendon comes back and is a 100% healthy. I think this team has a chance to be much better than last year, but they have to add another starting pitcher and maybe two, because what they've added so far just isn't enough. The Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays to me very interesting off seasons. The Mariners signed Robbie ray. American League sayong award winner, the Blue Jays signed Kevin gossman away from the San Francisco Giants, gossman had a big step forward last year. I know the Giants didn't make a strong attempt to keep him in part because they were concerned about his second half. Give me some thoughts and Mariners and Blue Jays. Well, I like where the Mariners finished last year as we know. They almost made the playoffs. They've done some interesting things and starting with Robbie ray. I mean, he has to be, if they're gonna make the playoffs, Robbie ray has to be something close to the say young winner that he was in 2021. So just that move alone, I think gives them some real versatility in that rotation and Adam Frazier gives him another offensive player at second base, which they needed also. I could see them making the next step next year and making the playoffs with the moves that they made. As for the Blue Jays, I mean, those are those for big losses. You lose the Cy Young winner like that. You lose Marcus Simeon. Those are big losses. But they filled in with some interesting people. They have that great young base coming back, and I still like with a Blue Jays are, I could see them be at a playoff team next year also, if, of course, there are 7 playoff teams instead of 5. I had a conversation with a baseball executive yesterday in which I said, you know, a team that I kind of like what they're doing, the Marlins, they go out and trade for Joey Wendell. They trade for Jacob stallings to be their catcher. You know, to help that young pitching staff, they sign Abby sailed Garcia. You can make an argument that maybe they paid above market for him. But you know what, Tim, they have potentially a great rotation. They got a little bit better on defense and they got a little bit better on offense. What do you think? Yeah, I think they got more than a little better on defense. Joey Wendell is a well above average defensive third baseman or wherever you put him. Jacob stallings want a gold glove. And obviously Darcy is a pretty darn good right Fielder and he was arguably the best offensive player on the brewers last year, even though the brewers didn't hit much in the postseason. Plus, with that young rotation, they signed sandy Alcantara long-term. I really liked what the Marlins did also. I'm not suggesting their better than the mets or the braves or maybe even the Phillies, but they needed some significant work done with that team after last year, and they got it done. All right. Some teams that are relatively inactive, when you compare it to market size, the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Dodgers, the Phillies, the Giants, and I'm not saying, these are the reasons that this is justified, but I do think that and I know this from conversations with executives. But part of the thinking of those teams who have all flirted with the competitive balance tax threshold in recent years and sometimes moved up on over it and sometimes gone below it is that they want to know what the rules of the next CBA are actually going to be. It's pretty clear Steve Cohen just plowed through and he's like, you know what? I'm going to spend this money. I'm going to have a huge payroll and if they're taxes, that's fine, I'll deal with that. Whereas I think from what I understand, some of the other teams are like, you know what? We want to know what the rules are and Tim, as I talked about with Paul and bikinis, if you're a team that has some financial flexibility after this labor stoppage is over, you could potentially do some damage because it's going to be a scramble with a lot of the middle class players taking big hits and salaries. So I don't know if it was the right thing for the Yankees to do. They need a shortstop, but that's I think the justification in part for what they're thinking. Yeah, and I certainly understand that. Now, I think if you're a Yankee fan, you want your shortstop wrapped up before you get to December the first and that did not happen, but I'm with you on this buster. Those are payroll, flexibility teams, those big market clubs that can do pretty much whatever they want when this market open opens back up again, which again, we're not sure when that's going to be. Dodgers can pretty much do whatever they want because of their money, but they still have a very good team. The Yankees have some work to do. I fully expect them to do it once they understand what the rules are, and they can not get out of this off season without getting a premiere shortstop one way or another. And the Red Sox didn't do much. I'm still not sure I understand the hunter Renfro move. He was an excellent defensive player last year and had a pretty darn good offensive season also. But again, they have the flexibility to say we can wait where others couldn't. So I'm not going to let you get completely unscathed from the labor situation. I got one question for you. Could you have like I have the perspective of time having covered multiple labor situations and leadership groups on both sides, my belief is is that the working relationship between the two sides is the worst that I've ever seen. The lack of collaboration, the lack of the dialog. That's my perception. What about you? Well, I covered the 81 strike buster. And again, I was like 12 years old..

"I mean, you have you have that. It's so you have stuff. And we haven't even had that. I mean Noah synagogue, by the way. No, it's in the guard, right? So, you know, you and I went through a water bread socks off seasons and you know, it was businesses done by Christmas. Like Christmas. That is it. You know that you have the week after Christmas off and you know that if anything happens in January, it's gonna be like mildly signings. Now, before this, I mean, it was painful. It was to me it was they really should and they won't. They really should put some deadlines on this thing. I mean, if you want to grow the sport and you want to get people excited like they get excited for the NFL and the NBA. Right. Let's do it. I mean, let's put some I think that's a great idea, rob. Yeah, I mean, it's gone the other way is crazy that you go back last year. The significant signings that happen in late January and February. And let's be honest tracks. By then, you just kind of exhausted by the off season. Like now you have in November, you still sort of have the momentum of a baseball season. But not in February in January. No, and it always used to be. You get January to kind of recoup really relax kind of like in football where you get July to relax essentially. June and July right after mini camp. Yeah. Crazy. Can you imagine in football if you're like, oh yeah, we're gonna have all our big signings like a couple weeks before the season starts. That would be suicide for a lot of the there's no way that half of the teams could compete, which is kind of the case in Major League Baseball. But anyway, okay, that's the deal with Iran. He moves on. I don't think it's a big deal for the Red Sox because I think they are presuming that Chris sale comes back and continues his momentum from the end of the regular season. They have Chris sale. They have Nate Navalny, who may or may not get extended as you tweeted out, I think. Well, we are going to talk to him until February. Right. Or I mean, I should say both. I think it's my understanding, probably isn't agreement not to talk till February. And, you know, we've in case people don't know Nathan Baldwin will be going in this contract to you the last year of a four year $68 million deal..

"That game in its entirety yesterday, I can say with certainty that the muscle memory that they've had to deal with in sort of living through their blown series against the Dodgers last year manifested yesterday and coming back to beat the brewers. This team is absolutely loaded. They will be an underdog in the NLCS, but do absolutely do not put it past them because for my money over the last two two and a half months, this team has been every bit as good as the Dodgers and the Giants. Who would you favor in game 5, Dodgers giants? We're talking about razor thin margins here. So to answer your question in a roundabout way, a giant or my pick. And the reason the Giants are my pick is because as you know, this time of year managers are extremely stingy and we'll have a short lease with the starters, even if they're throwing the ball really, really well. And thus, I think this is going to be a game in which, unless there's something that happens unexpectedly early, this is me a bullpen game. And if this is going to be a bullpen game, I trust Gabe kapler and his pictures more from the end of the bullpen. Believe it or not. The stuff that I'll use is this. During the regular season buster on games in which the Giants bullpen had any rest, at least one day of rest, they owned the best ERA in baseball by more than half of a run. And as we saw in this series so far, but two days in which they came in with rest, they shut out the Dodgers. So my expectation again in a 55 45 game is that if we're going to ask these bullpens to get 15 outs, the Dodgers openers want to have much less confidence in and the giant space on their track record both within this series and throughout the regular season. Again, a two one four bullpen array and these circumstances are in the regular season and it's historically good. I'll take my chances with San Francisco. Yesterday I reported that the qualifying offer for free agents is going to be at 18.4 million that's down from last winter's 18.9 million. All these teams who've had free agents who were with them throughout the 2021 season can offer them a qualifying offer, the player can choose to accept or reject if they reject and then sign up big deal. The team gets gets draft pick compensation. So there's some interesting choices every year guys who are sort of on the fringe who you wonder if they'll take it last winter was Marcus stroman. It was Kevin gausman with the Giants. They both took it turned out to be really nice one year investment for their respective teams in a nice payday for the players. Give me three intriguing names when it comes to qualifying offers. Buster, the first of which is Chris Taylor, who has been really impactful for the Dodgers in recent years. He hasn't been among their most impactful postseason performers. My expectation is that Corey Seeger is going to walk. I am, I can not wait to see if they extend it. And whether or not he would accept it, because that's an awfully nice payday for a player like him. The second is where I sell Iglesias, the angels closer, that's a lot of money to give any relief pitcher. And if he winds up hitting the market, there's going to be a huge appetite for his services, but you also one of the angels are going to try and win next year obviously with a huge part of that bullpen. He was probably the best pitcher in it, but that's a lot of money to devote to a 9th inning guy. And lastly, Justin Verlander. We know the Astros owner last week, Jim crane came out and said that they would probably extend the qualifying offer. And I'm dying to see if they do, whether or not Justin Verlander would accept it. Because I have no sense whatsoever of how he views his future of how people around the league view what he has left. We just saw what Max Scherzer did this year. He was remarkably good. And obviously, they've always sort of been compared, although Verlander has a lot more tread under the tires or at least some. So those are the three names that I have circle. How about you? I thought you had mentioned Noah synagogue, who had just two appearances for the mets this year as he recovered a lot of the year from Tommy John surgery had a setback at one point. He made a turn to remember, was it ten or $11 million he made this year and basically didn't contribute anything, and now the mets have the question if they want to give him a qualifying offer at 18.4. Noah indicated. And he was speaking off the cuff, so I wouldn't hold him to this. At the end of the year when he was asked, would he accept the qualifying offer he basically said, heck yeah, what do you think about him with that decision? Because that to me is more on the fence than I think people realize. Yes. And I'm one of those people because I saw you tweet about Cinderella as a possibility. And I have to admit buffer. I think extending the qualifying offer to synagogue would be crazy for the men. Absolutely insane. I understand that the profile, we understand the potential, but this is not a person who has been reliable at all. And even the last time he was good, he wasn't really as good as most people remember. And that's had the opportunity to spend money like crazy this off season. And if it were mine, and I had $19 million to spend next year I would sooner do it on a player a position player or a pitcher for whom I'm more confident is going to be reliable for me. I don't know if speak Cohen feels any sort of emotional attachment to synagogue. Obviously he was so good in 2015 and Cohen's a big fan of the team as we well know. But if it were my money, I mean, I would not consider it. Like he wouldn't come up in my slideshow. Obviously, Michael conforto is a different story, but I'm not sure a synagogue. Even enters the conversation. So I'm a little bit surprised to hear you say otherwise. Well, keep in mind, they need rotation. Oh yeah, starting pitching. They have a deep need with Strowman potentially walking away as a free agent with so much uncertainty around Jacob de grum. And you know, synagogue would just be a one year obligation for a guy speaking of Steve Cohen who has a ton of money. All right, sir. Thanks, sambo. Later boys. Get out of here, hambo. Bleacher.
