Venezuela in crisis

"Venezuela is a country in freefall as economic mismanagement an international sanctions. Combine to create desperately difficult times for its citizens as global debate centers, on who's to blame successive, socialist governments or countries like the US, who are putting the squeeze on the government of nNcholas Maduro, people are struggling for basics like food and medicine. US correspondent Zoe Daniel has recently returned from Venezuela as gentlest Venezuela is not an easy country to work in media vases, difficult to get and even with them in hand report is closely monitored by the authorities and government backed armed groups called collective owes rooms need to be checked for bugs sensitive interviews must be discussed in hushed tons movements should not be telegraphed and should never happen after dark time spent in each location needs to be limited violent crime is also close to the w-. I in the world and much of the story that needs to be told is in the slums, or barrios, where poverty hunger and disparition exacerbates that risk. There are also the gangs who trade in drugs, and ruled the roost in recent months, escalating political tensions have added the risk of protest rallies, turning violent clashes between opposition activists and government troops and proxies, all of this means that the stories of ordinary Venezuelans are infrequently told but when you give them the chance this sentiments a clear. Something by women and men young and old have to realize the critical situation, the country, is going through these days, hunger, misery, repression and unemployment. We spent a week in the slums of Caracas and surrounds talking to people about life and politics. Well, I. Research says that nine out of ten people in Venezuela, count afford enough food, because of hyperinflation, which is rented the local currency almost valueless government food parcels that handed out monthly a dwindling. Sometimes now, they come only every second or third month, and they're often missing case applies like milk. There's widespread frustration and people are starting to voice it. Even with the risk of recriminations, Ropeway sediment Settimio, nothing seems to improve it all gets worse. So I think they should be change to give the opportunity for someone else to rule the situation has created a window of opportunity for opposition later. One guy who was backed by the US, and ustralia among dozens of other countries when he declared himself president after twenty eighteen elections that are widely condemned as flawed, although you get the sense that it's a case of right place. Right. Time rather than one guy DOE, having specifically captured the public imagination ROY Innis weather. It's not just a problem for Venezuela, what the international community has done so far is very important. The recognition of our constitution and of me as interim president Australia did that to what's important. Now is to keep the pressure up the dictatorship won't voluntarily leave. And fortunately them enduro government wouldn't respond to the concerns raised by those who can't get enough food or medicine at a time when political division globally runs deep Venezuela's, plied attracts, at a response almost all of the Venezuelans that I've encountered blame the economic collapse, on mismanagement by successive governments who've nationalized, assets, subsidized goods and services failed to manage the country's oil revenues and allowed endemic, cronyism and corruption. They don't always mention soc. Realism specifically many still harked back formerly to the days of logistics, under, former president Hugo Chavez. But for many observers Venezuela's become a symbol of the broader failure of the socialist model, that's gained particular traction as lift and right retreat to their corners, the world over. However, defenders of socialism, attack outside nations for interfering in Venezuela, particularly the United States, which is imposed harsh sanctions and an embargo on oil Russia, China and Cuba continue to back the Madero administration. And that's a K driver of US involvement. The big picture issues, but for ordinary Venezuelans who've seen they country go from the richest in Latin America to a basket case they just want something to change, so they can feed their families, but from Caracas that's North American correspondent, Zoe Daniel.

Venezuela, President And Nncholas Maduro discussed on The Norman Goldman Show

"We were talking about Venezuela. Where they're not worried so much about mortgages because well there I mean, if you've got a mortgage in Venezuela probably paid it off by now because the government's hyper inflated, the currency so much. That's one of the benefits of if you wanna say there's any benefit to inflation. It is that if you get a loan at, you know, whatever the the value of the dollar or the boulevard this case was at the time. And then they hyper inflate the currency. You know, if you've got a two hundred thousand dollar home loan, and then all of a sudden after few years, what was, you know, two hundred thousand dollars worth of of a home now would cost a million or ten billion dollars because the hyperinflation has been absolutely insane. You can then take one paycheck and pay off your mortgage in that case. I most people aren't worried about that. Because in Venezuela. They're worried about where they're going to get their next meal from as there's a lot of demonstrations going on over the last twenty four hours with one side versus another you've got the people backing the current president or the claimed current President Nicolas Maduro, and there's another guy one Guido who is claiming he's the president of the country. Pressure On China To Agree To Trade Deal

"Radio. Even though we have a lot of liquidity offline from may happy made if you are taking today off there still some selected assets that are trading and some important events to look ahead to US equity futures advancing then he had apples upbeat forecasts. Traders expecting lower volumes throughout the day. Then bit of movement coming through in terms of US equity futures higher. You've got a bit of movement on the ASX two hundred straight up about eight tenths of one percent. Other than that. It's pretty quiet on the equity side in terms of the handover overnight. We did have course, they Tekere innings more generally with apple but also a little bit of a well, it was a weight on the shoulders from Google corporate earnings and develop the trade conflict between the US and China remain front and center, that's for sure I mean, running through some of the currency pairs here. You're looking here the Bloomberg dollar index. That's just barely about the flat line here quiet on the Major's front. So I mean, pretty much all of these pairs unchanged. Eurodollar one twelve twenty Donnie in one hundred and eleven fifty and cable is up less than a tenth of one percent. Short of one thirty fifty five commodities are on the pressure a little bit. Brent crude Coney down six tenths of one percent. We have higher inventories out of the US and the initial data overnight. Gold is lower by three tenths of one percent. So the metals on the pressure let me run through some of the news as well. In terms of the corporate earnings because we are getting of course, quite a few fast and furious start off with Sainsbury's fiscal year revenue at twenty nine point zero one billion pounds. You're looking here at fiscal year sales of thirty two point four one billion pounds to final dividend. Shares going to be seven point nine Pence. Few notes on guidance year Sainsbury saying the consumer outlook continues to be uncertain and that they are well-placed to navigate the external environment. So that's on the Sainsbury's front more retail input from next currently first quarter retail sales coming through a negative three point six percent. The market was looking for actually more of a contraction here down six point two one percents of slightly better than some of the analysts had pencilled in. I go to online sales eleven point eight percents the estimate heroes for twelve point eight percent. And so a little bit of a little bit better on the retail sales. But a little bit short of estimates on the online sales on guidance. They're still seeing fiscal year pre-tax at seven hundred and fifty million pounds and still see full price sales at up one point seven percent. And then also on the economic front. We've got some UK April house prices. They're up zero point four percent on the month. That's the nationwide. Up zero point nine percent on the years that is some economic input as well. So that's a bit of a flavor then on what's happening with these corporate earnings. Let's get now to some of the stories we're watching very carefully starting off with what's happening with the United States and China. The White House is ramping up pressure on China to reach a trade deal in the next two weeks. Bloomberg daybreak Asia anchor Bryan Curtis has more from Hong Kong, the US said once again, he would walk away from the talks if no deal, Mick Mulvaney, President Trump's acting chief of staff said negotiations would not go on forever. So the administration is making its impatience known a slight shift from the earlier more optimistic messaging still going into talks today. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US side had a nice working dinner last night with vice-president Leo hub, two of the quick notes. The F T says the US is likely to accept a watered-down commitment from China on security that to speed up a deal and. And Chinese regulators said today, both Chinese and foreign banks will no longer be subject to ownership caps on local banks Kong, Bryan Curtis. Bloomberg daybreak Europe. That means on world financial markets away. Today's Federal Reserve announcement on the US interest rates. Bloomberg's Michael Mckee has a preview. This fed meeting is widely expected to be a nun event except for that little possibility of a rate cut. No, not a policy cut to the fence target. But an adjustment to the rate of interest. The central Bank pays banks on excess reserves the effective federal funds rate traded a record five basis points above the excess reserves rate Tuesday most traders blamed technical rather than policy issues such as a rise in repo rates on other securities that suggests the fed doesn't need to do anything others note, though, it's been an ongoing problem and forecast a slight cut in the rake in Washington, Michael Mckee, Bloomberg daybreak Europe. And as the central Bank meant to weigh monetary policy. Donald Trump sought to pressure the fed to make drastic moves to boost and already healthy US economy in a pair of tweets Tuesday. Trump criticized the fed for having incessantly lifted interest rates and wonderfully low inflation Colfer steep interest rate cut and the resumption of bond purchases as well. The thing with the theme. The president's comments came as another political drama swirled around the central Bank on Capitol Hill Trump's plan nomination. He recalls Stephen Moore to the fed sports looks increasingly uncertain as a third Republican Senator voices downs. The story from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. A key ally of the president told reporters that Moore would be quote, a very problematic nomination, though, he has not made up his mind. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa and Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama on Monday voice. Their own concerns about more a Heritage Foundation fellow and a former Trump campaign adviser Ernst the senate's fourth ranking Republican told reporters, quote, I am not enthused about what he has said in various articles later, Monday Shelby. The former chairman of the banking committee said he thought the proposed nomination, quote has some problems Charlie Pellett. Bloomberg daybreak Europe. That's something singing. Singapore where Mark Cranfield and markets live team joins us, Mark. Let's start off with the mlive question of the day. The fed odds in terms of the likelihood of a move very contradictory and not really in line with what we're seeing the job market. Yes. Good morning, certainly the market by some as strong as it's been since the nineteen sixties in the United States pretty healthy condition. We've also saying some pretty good wage growth as well. Even though it hasn't really fit injuring flation too much. So Fava certainly in the GDP data from Las week, as well already know the picture is pretty healthy economy. We go to started go to the payrolls not becoming up on Friday, and the fed will certainly be thinking about this as well because it probably reinforce this very strong picture of job market. So when you have that in the background certainly makes a bit curious as to why the mock is getting so excited about the polls. Not of the fed may take the opportunity to to try and rain the market back in a little bit and try and get them back more to a neutral territory because of that. Let's talk about the greenback. It's climbed against all but three of its group ten currency peers and twenty nineteen to folks at TD North America point out that any further strengthening any wheat test of some of those twenty eighteen is could mean trouble for stocks can be trouble for high your credit and currencies as well. More. Generally. You're seeing that dollar bears can return to hibernation after the FOMC run me through your thinking. Yeah. So we had a little bit of softness in the dollar towards the individual pro, and that's not unusual this month and maneuvering which goes on. And it's quite often the case where people are just have to tidy things up in the came off a little, but the fundamental case for is is pretty hard to ignore right now, particularly against the emerging market currencies. You've got short term rates in America, which are very high in comparison to other g ten currencies relatively high compared to the emerging market world. Plus as we were saying this pretty strong background of data from the United States. And they made it very. Clear it's on a long-term polls here. So he's not really going to be going anywhere. We've monetary policy at the same time. There's other countries that want to lower interest rates in in Asia. We've had India of moved already we've got to Malaysia looking at it, South Korea looking at it Philippines, Indonesia, they're all heading towards lower rates environment. So that certainly from an investor's point to you. They're probably thinking that the fed is beginning to look like a high yield currency here. So we could save it. If a rebound once the fed is out the way people start looking ahead to Friday's jobs report. It's always a pleasure catching up. Thank you for stopping buying. It's Mark Cranfield. Remember the for real time market commentary and analysis to markets. Lifelock. That's the only Bloomberg terminal. Let's get into some of the corporate news because apple their their numbers of projected quarterly sales top analysts estimates more from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett. The reports suggest demand for iphones stabilized after a disappointing holiday period. The company also reported solid revenue. Growth from its services business as consumer sign up for a growing Schwartz board of digital subscriptions. Apple shares have surged more than forty percent from twenty one month low in early January after lacklustre iphone sales prompted the company to cut its holiday revenue forecast. So far this year. Apple is up twenty seven point two percent in New York. Charlie Pellett, Bloomberg daybreak Europe and do better as demand for all. The shares offered in its IPO just one day after kicked off throat show in London. That's according to people familiar with the matter, the ride hailing company will continue meeting potential buyers in New York and San Francisco as it seeks to raise as much as nine billion dollars right time now for the latest elsewhere in the world with Bloomberg's leeann guarantee, man. This week Facebook reported its advertising revenue and global users are growing and this week's quality assurance we take a deep dive into why in his early years Facebook prioritized growth over everything else. Nearly every crisis Facebook now faces stems from that nNcholas Thompson editor in chief of wired says that's left management navigate a metaphor minefield. There was a lot of unexploded ordinance, but they were inevitably going to step on at some point. He's an author on the magazine's latest cover story, which goes behind the scenes at the troubled company. He says Facebook's business is actually solid for a couple of reasons. Number one, the advertising business model they came up with this one of the greatest ever, and it doesn't require lots of changes. They just built an amazing business model and the. Marginal cost of bringing in new advertisers are very low. Secondly, one of the smartest business decisions. Mark Zuckerberg ever made was to buy Instagram and people don't really understand that Instagram is owned by Facebook. Or if they distrust Facebook, they don't distrust Instagram, so Instagram continues to grow. So they make lots of money off of Corfe Facebook. They have lots of user growth on Instagram, and what's up and the businesses doing great. You would think at some point the maybe advertisers would start to push back. I mean Facebook's reputation has really taken this really huge dense that it appears house. Why do people still want to advertise with it? Well, because the advertising continues to work if at some point people had an icky feeling when they use Facebook, and therefore the ads are less effective than advertisers will leave. But at this moment Facebook allows you to very specifically target specific users in ways that you cannot on other platforms and for lots of advertisers. That's just a deal. That's too good to pass up now face. Is an -ticipant tting. It says up to a five billion dollar fine from the Federal Trade Commission. We heard that from it this week about how it's handled some of these privacy issues will they even feel that is the question. They have so much cash on hand is a big deal now so Facebook put out in their earnings call they said that they anticipate three to five billion dollar fine. I don't know whether that's because those are the numbers the FTC has been talking about with them. Or if as book is just trying to set expectations as negotiating tactic. I would not rule out the possibility that Facebook is hit with a ten billion dollar fine or a twenty billion dollar fine, regardless to your question, even if it is at the higher end whether it's five or ten or twenty it's tiny market cap is up. I believe forty billion dollars as we talk this morning. So it's not a huge hit to them. Obviously. They would rather have five billion dollars and not have five billion dollars. But they will be fine. Regardless of what this number comes out at the thing. They really worry about is antitrust if there's antitrust regulation. And it comes down hard on them. That is a serious problem and that would make the market dropped dramatically. What are the stakes for Facebook's leadership around all of these scandals? The fake news, the offensive content the privacy, you know, you detail that they've got something like the two thousand moderate has now does that mean they're actually taking this seriously as a business risk? Yes. Absolutely. Facebook is taking it very serious business risks. So there to really interesting questions in there. So number one is do they take the seriously as a business risk? Absolutely. Are they committed to trying to counter fake news and all of the manipulation on the platform? Absolutely water the stakes to their business. They're very high scandal continues to multiply there could be real consequences down the road. What are the stakes specifically to top management meeting? Mark Zuckerberg, and Sheryl Sandberg. The two people who we most associate with the company for soccer Berg, he's going to run the company as long as he wants to. He has voting control of the shares. He's appointed his friends as board members key is. In a good position whenever he wants to go and run the chance Berg initiative or just go be a intellectual thought leader or do Bill Gates type things he will go. Choose to do that. For sandberg. It's tougher. And there were moments in the last year where it seemed like she might be sacrificed or where she might be in. Big trouble sucker brook has expressed his loyalty to her. But as the scandal is multiplied, and as they started to touch her in a way, they never had before it seemed as though her position was at risk. And it is also certainly the case that the public reputation of both of them as dropped a year ago. We were talking about each of them as potential presidential candidates. Now, there's not a chance what about the morale in the white accompany in the wake of all of this. Do you get the feeling from the people you've been talking to in your reporting that employees a fairly satisfied that I'm laughing even as I say that or is there a whole lot of internal chaos at this company. There is a lot more employees disatisfaction than there was two years ago. There are lots of employees. We're talk to their who say, oh, this is great. It's cool. You know, the media hates us. But that's not my problem. I'm happy. And they're bunch of other people who say, you know, we deserve a lot of the hatred. We made a lot of mistakes we trampled on people's privacies. And you know, I regret all that. We've done I talked to a lot of people who are thinking about going to work there. And it doesn't have the halo that it did two years ago. They still pay you. Well, the fact that the stock continues to go up as great particularly for people who have options, but it is a less exciting place to work and night as one of the true risks for the company in one of the most adverse effects of the last two years for Facebook did any part in this reporting, particularly given how much time you've spent on Facebook directly. Now did anything really surprising? There was one specific story that stunned me. And I was the circumstances. That led to the departure of the two founders of Instagram, Kevin sister, Krieger and Winfred Vogelstein. And I started reporting the story we made. List of the mysteries. We wanted to solve that was at the very top. They left. It seems strange. They had left all of a sudden in September no-one knew why? And late in the reporting months into reporting, the story, we finally learned the full story, and that is that Cording to people close to them they had grown frustrated zuckerberg's increased meddling. They didn't like the idea that Instagram was going to be further merged with what's app and with Facebook. And there was real tension. Over Instagram's growth, and there's a sense among some people at Facebook that Instagram's growth was coming at the expense of core Facebook, and that led to all kinds of tensions, and then a big fight at the end of July and a moment where Mark Zuckerberg, according to people you observing all of this Mark Zuckerberg asked one of his deputies to drop a list of all the ways that Facebook supported Instagram the way it drove users towards Instagram. And then he gave the list to Kevin system and said, we're getting rid of all these. And according to people familiar with the story system reacted quite badly to that. And then went on paternity leave came back and said, I'm done here. And so the biggest surprise to us was that the departure of system in Krieger which had come out before was much tensor much tenser than I had believed when I began reporting the story

"I mean the government of nncholas maduro controls muslim media the electoral authorities in the legislature that it actually created last year and election that was widely seen as rigged and call this vote so it has all of that it's also recently been providing more food handouts yesterday i went to a giant supermarket where the shelves now stocked with lots of stuff passed that sardines people said they're that much of this food just wasn't there three weeks ago and the price is announced significantly lower than before but what was fascinating was the in the supermarkets underground carpark that will more than one hundred troops from the national guard in riot gear and about the same number outside with water cannon so the government's clearly concerned about the risk of when you talk to people on the streets there what are they saying about this election when there's so much going on when the country's in such a difficult place people seem absolutely uninterested in it that struggling to get by and focusing on that i did spend some time in a public square talking to people and met a few supporters of nncholas maduro seem sincerely to support him and agree with his argument then venezuela's the victim of an economic wall by the us but it's fans a hugely outnumbered by critics i met a man called jose luis who's forty ask him and asked him whether there's any chance whether nichols madura could lose this election ups limpia here jose luis thinks would lose if the elections were clean but he says that clearly tainted he used to be a computer engineer but he can't get work in that area so he's now a security guard it's actually jose luis birthday today election day and i asked him if he'd celebrate absolutely and he replied that in venezuela there's absolutely nothing to celebrate he says every night he sees about fifty people rifling for food and trash outside the building where he works.

"Be to hold your children close tonight and let them know how much you love him now we have two goals going forward the immediate goal is to work in the immediate aftermath of this catastrophe to gather the evidence and information that is needed to ensure that this crime is going to be prosecuted appropriately while also working in tandem to ensure that we provide the families and victims as well as all the children at the school at schools across the entire nncholas school district with the support and resources and counseling they need second we need to do more than just pray for the victims and their families his time in texas that we take action to step up and make sure this tragedy is never repeated ever again and the history of the state of texas so beginning immediately i'm going to be working with members of the texas legislature but also members of our communities across the entire state of texas to begin with roundtable discussions beginning next week where we will assemble all stakeholders to begin to work immediately on swift solutions to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again we want to hear from parents we want to hear from students would want to hear from educators we want to hear from concerned citizens we want to hear from from those who hold the second amendment right in high esteem we want to hear from everybody has an interest in what has happened today so we can work together on putting together laws that will protect second memorize but at the same time ensure that our communities and especially if schools or safer places please include things like speeding background checks then also includes strategies to keep guns out of the hands of those hippos in immediate danger to others include providing more resources to our schools to make sure that they have the safety personnel who can help protect their schools that also means providing resources to address.

"Then here from my personal life and business coach nncholas salter then the powerful duo of melody and monica from simply spaced and finally influence or superstar lauren evert's from the skinny confidential i told you guys this was a good lineup each guest's original show will be included in the show notes and if you haven't listened to their episode yet e will want to make sure that you do so so before we dive into these ladies killer answers i wanted to share my own with you so ask myself what was your biggest lesson to growing an impactful and influential business and after thinking about that i kind of had to sit back and really think about what i've learned over the past year there's been a lot of trials a lot of ups a lot of downs celebrations and a lot of learning curves so i think that my biggest lesson to growing an impactful and influential business is to keep striving but at the same time being flexible kind of like that idea of you gotta been so so you don't break right i think so many times we can get focused on one goal or one aspect or one area and we kind of lose sight of what that flexibility may be so what i have really learned is at the end of the day just really being grateful for what is there and what we have and what we have learned and really moving forward with the knowledge that we have now the experience that we have now and the opportunity to grow and also really just not taking it so serious at the end of the day i think a lot of times we can get so wrapped up in what we're doing and what we're trying to create and who were trying to impact and really the community that we're trying to grow that we sometimes lose sight of really all the amazingness it's already happening around us so i tend to really ask myself in those moments when i'm figuring out do i zig zag do i answer this question do i go this way i'm getting overwhelmed what do i do i kinda stop in that moment and ask myself does this bring more joy into the world.

"Where is the responsibility of those adults an entire line of them who had the ability to make a decision to act based on things that they know took place that nncholas cruise was responsible for leading up to that where's their responsibility if you talk about allowing the slaughter then the question has to be asked why isn't there a call for those individuals to be held responsible if he held a gun to someone's head if he brought bullets to a school in the in the entire chain of events count the number of adults who were responsible for making the decision when you are talking about solving problems because of an incident that happened to you and you would nor all the variables of what went into the incident that happened to you then we have to question your actual sincerety sincerity about solving the problem of what happened at your school and when you're calling for more laws that would not have had an effect at your school at all and you are not screaming for an examination of the policies that are enacted by those who you politically agree with things like let some people get away with things would have been criminal acts at school and call them just school discipline axe you're calling for new laws yet the laws that existed were not enforced and the policies set up were not enforced.
