"Recently too disturbing incidents took place on Canadian College. Campuses purpose is the first at the University of Toronto. saw some students raise an objection to supporting kosher food on campus on the grounds is that accommodating that religious need on campus could be seen as supporting a political choice. The second took place at York University where violence broke out during a presentation from an Israeli speaker Acre. Joining us now to discuss these two issues and the state of things for Jewish students on campus is Alon or Z.. Director of advocacy at hills of Ontario and and Zephyr. AJC's director of campus affairs. Yulon Zev thank you so much for joining us. Thank you so much for having me happy to be here. Alon tell us more about what happened last week at York University and how we got to a point where violence is taking place on our campuses for sure well York's campus environments rather interesting. There are a few different campus presents from the Jewish can be There's Hillel York. which serves does the bulk of the Jewish students on campus There is also a club called husband your which is connected to husbands fellowships Canada and Lately there's been in a new club that has popped up called. Hey Route Canada which is a new thing. Not only for your university but also for the Canadian community It seems seems to be spearheaded by one individual students but the cubs presence on campus was noted a few weeks ago when there was a little bit of trouble between them I'm actually getting accredited at the club on campus once they became accredited they put into plan bringing a group reserve us on duty. which is a group of Israeli Israeli? Reserve soldiers who believes that they should be on pres- presence on campuses in North America to discuss. What's going on In Israel will the truth about Israel dispel myths about the BBC asked movement Anti-semitism Anti-zionism things of that nature in two thousand seventeen Hill Ontario actually brought them to a few campuses for a tour and We were planning on hosting them at Hiller Laurie which is About an hour outside of Toronto onto our West it's one of our Hill Ontario Campuses When the opportunity presented itself at Hill York however to partner with us on this opportunity? We declined the reason being that we didn't feel that this program was The right move for the campus environment at York York University has been a story arch unity for many years. Unfortunately for being a place that has a lot of protests it's and feelings towards the Jewish community specifically on the notion of our community being in favor of the state of Israel and Our approach over the last I decade With York now with Hill Ontario has been to build bridges with other clubs and build connections individually rather than just sort of bring as many programs can't campus that we feel make good. We'd rather do so in a more. Strategic and cohesive way with our campus partners and we have had great strides in that area. In fact the last time there was such a violent incident that involved the Jewish community. At York in my recollection would be about a decade ago and and It's we're thankful to live in a environment where Jewish students enjoy a safe and vibrant campus experience on average and that is true at York and every other the campus that can work with Specifically at York it takes a finer touch to find the right programs to bring in the right way to bring Israelis to campus So you Lon at at the risk of being to American right sometimes from here in New York candidate just kind of feels like America North but obviously there's you know. Canada has its own political. No culture universities in Canada are not carbon copies of universities in America. So you know what else is going on. vis-a-vis BCS vis-a-vis related to the boycott divestment and sanctions movement in Canada. Would you say that the situation tends to be fairly good or less good. How are you feeling writ large comment? It's a lot from our friends to ourselves America and Canada seem a lot of like in this element. I think that we are different My Self and our partners at the Center for Israel and Jewish affairs which is the advocacy wing of the Jewish community We did a study a little while ago to look at. Es successes food failures etc on Canadian campuses across the country. I can only speak to inside of this province in Ontario but BBS has been very much on decline line in terms of its success rate There have been a number of opportunities in the last Few years including outside of this province where there have been BBS resolutions for for At times even off campus to promote DDS and That has fallen very much on deaf ears or has been stopped at whatever opportunities a great good example of that is The three leaders of the Alaskan eating election which happened not Two months ago for the MVP. which is the New Democratic Party? Much like our Socialist Party or Labour Party in Canada. The Liberal Party which party criminal in power under the direction of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Conservative Party under under the direction of Andrea Sherr all. Three major parties have taken stances against DDS in the past and We are thankful that the three major your parties in Canada Move that much like you see in the United States on a more local level counselors mayors provincial premiers. which is the Canadian needed equivalent to a governor they have very much taken a stance against weed? Yes as well. That's true Ontario that's true in providence to our west and east very much. The Canadian political critical community fans against and that extends very much to campus on the campus. Front we have taken proactive measures. McGill University of Montreal at Ryerson University University here in Toronto and at Western University which is located in London Ontario. Two hours to the west of Toronto Those three university student unions have adopted the Ottawa protocol or the H. R. A. Definition of Anti Semitism which specifically points to antisemitism and anti Zionism overlapping and at least the number of situations And we believe that these proactive steps. Prove that the Canadian community on off campus is moving away from the the fact that BCS motion are failing at a larger rate than they were. Maybe five or ten years ago I think of that as well does that. Tend to align with where things are in the a states that he launches said. DDS measures are failing. You know at at record rates. Would you say that that tends to be failing in the states as well I think it's really a hit or remiss Thing in the United States as to whether or not is passing in its traditional forms as a resolution student government or if it's a referendum that dis brought to the entire student body the real question here is in terms of the success of the movement is doing anything to Actually Change University University investment practices with regard to companies that do business with Israel or based in Israel and the answer to that is not at all. We've had dozens of of different resolutions in referenda over the last couple of years at the student government level that are at at the best advisory three on these these messages to university administrators saying. Hey we We the student government here are saying you need to pull these investments and not not a single university administration has gone ahead and changed how the school doesn't does business or does investments with with Israel with the Israeli companies and this traditional model of bringing it to a vote at the government level or the campus by level has really only succeeded in name. Only yes sir. We've God fifty per fifty one or fifty one percent of of the voting adding body who participates in the school action or on this student government council to to support eds. But it. Hasn't I mean it hasn't changed anything at the a at the administrative level and it had the only other thing that it's been able to do successfully is divide campus and wherever a resolution is or Rabiya campaign is is coming up. We see time and time again that the campus climate takes us severe hit because of because of this resolution it really turns the campus into pro divestment against divestment I and and can turn very heated and at and at its extreme can be can view violent or close to violent on thankfully. That's not been the case most of the time but we're we're we're definitely increasingly seeing like more contentious Campus climate as a result of PD S. Coming to town. If I could just go with them just said I The same is true when it comes to university is in Canada and their relationship with Israeli universities are institution Center for Jewish Affairs Works Adamantly on that project and we support them with that much. You can where people feel that it. Is You know quote. The worst place for Jewish students on campus and Canada namely places like McGill and New York. And you have T- those universities have rich ties with Israeli petitions or Israeli university is and that I think speaks to exactly what level saying that. The movement is maybe succeeding but only a name MHM Yulon I would be remiss tonight. Ask You about Jewish Student Morale Right Now at York after this incident and just in general. How are the students feeling about these? These problems that crop up. I think the most emphatic answer I can give to that is that students are feeling conflicted on the reason is because I think that many of the Jewish students who are on campus today Especially the students that we meet in the Hillary York Lounge which is on campus student center Many students feel feel that this wasn't a good strategy to begin with but also like us condemn the violence and what happened Entirely I was there during the protests selves with seven of my staff members. And we work to ensure that as many Jewish we're not involved in the protests or when a caught up in them trying to go to or from the event itself And where we saw students of our we encourage them to stay away. We encourage them to make sure they were safe at all times. After the event our staff were on campus we have a campus teams of seven staff members at York they all have been working diligently to to connect with the Jewish students on campus. The ones who come in and out of our lounge someone's who comes to our daily programming En to figure out how they're feeling to make sure that they understand that there is a place for them to be heard and that where there are concerns we can address we can. We can coordinate with administration and campus security before events like these two thousand did but it's also important for us to reach out to the students afterwards and make sure that they feel supported. I think that average Jewish student at York today it does feel supported by our community at VR staff. But I also think they realize that we can't take for granted the campus community that we've built over the years and it's only thanks to amazing students like the student executive leaders that we have today as well as the students who are just on campus for the first time Mrs maybe their first year. They're frauds students or what we call them here in Canada When we when we see those students and they don't know the history of until York O'Rourke university or when this is the biggest touch point they have with the Jewish community? We make sure that they understand the reality on the ground that they understand the services we can support then went Zev just to bring us home here. Tell us about from your expert. Position would have been the major trends regarding Israel on campus this semester. What should we be keeping? Can I on the probably almost definitely more concerning than the traditional modality of being something something that the student government is dealing with her or in student elections is this culture of of anti Israel activists just completely not willing to engage in any sort of meaningful dialogue or Pluralistic conversation A lot of this is due to to anti-normalization the idea that students that are supportive of Zionism or of the Jewish right to self-determination that holding onto that identity or that belief is enough have to disqualify a lot of anti Israel activists from from even holding a conversation or a joint program. Certainly certainly not a direct to be but even to just coexist oh exist in the same spaces on and we're seeing this This retreat from meaningful dialogue in a couple of forms one is the renewed. And we've seen meanest recently a couple of big instances the last month or so of the heckler's veto The idea that students who don't approve of every single thing that or anything that a guest speaker lecturer professor on campus is going to be talking about coming in making noise. Disrupting in some instances. We we just saw this at Arizona State University blocking the door so that the.

Pelosi has had a couple of comments, and I and she put through this resolution a couple of weeks ago and hopefully deal with another resolution tomorrow, and she has taken Omar to the woodshed and had a little private tete-a-tete in the speaker's office. And I don't think Senator from your state. We'll say we do a thing about it. Because she just afraid she might not get the Muslims. Well, I think she makes a mistake. First of all, I think I more morally it's the wrong wrong position to take. And if she takes for granted. The Jewish people who have been very generous to the democrat financially and also with their votes, this this could undercut one of the real wellsprings of support that the democratic party's enjoyed for longtime Harvey. So I could just be a media operation with the collaboration of one Republican, certainly Democrats and people responding wait a minute, you're directly involved in megotiating. But you haven't seen the agreement who's negotiating this agreement. It's crazy. It's crazy. So we don't know we don't actually. We know what's going on with the so-called agreement because it may just be a great big propaganda ploy by the Democrats last night with their friends in the media and. We got to see what it is. If there is anything to to look at whether there is anything that has been written down because this is all being done in a in a very suspicious way, a very suspicious way, they had the the share of the house appropriations committee on giggling like, oh, I don't know how you found out all that stuff. But that's pretty good. It's probably probably you gave it to them. And that's Nita Lowey congresswoman Nita Lowey who has been alive for one third of the history of the United States of America, one third of the history of the United States. And I I don't I don't know what there is for the president to accept your turn down yet. So I think I may just kind of stay calm for a little while and see what it is that emerges because you shouldn't the president shouldn't agree to a CNN report. That's that's.

"Not specifically for a wall congresswoman Nita Lowey is saying that she was caught. Optimistic though that we will get through this. But added we cannot shut the government down again and three retired astronaut Mark Kelly says he is running the finish out. John McCain's term in the US Senate Kelly is married to former democratic congresswoman Gabrielle giffords who survived being shot in the head by a craze constituent eight years ago at ten seventeen three female students are suing Yale University and nine of us fraternities asking a court to force frats to accept women as members and calling it a dangerous environment in which sexual misconduct thrives. Here's CBS correspondent mega Oliver mcmeel singer and rye Walker say they've had enough of inappropriate behavior by men at Yale fraternity parties someone came up from behind me and started grinding on me, and then actually pulled up my skirt was groped from behind. A lot of people were grinding against me from behind. I couldn't see them in a lawsuit. They allege female undergraduates risk sexual harassment and assault by attending fraternity events. They say men deny female students admission based on their appearance verbally harassed them. Grind against them, grab them and groped them. Why do you want to be part of a culture that you're alleging promotes sexual misconduct. Fraternities offer vast network of privileges to their members they offer connections. They offer help networking some people might argue sororities do the same thing. Sororities don't tend to have nearly the same connections as fraternities fraternities often have people I think in higher positions of power and certainly on campus. They off they occupy much higher social space their lawsuit against Yale in nine fraternities argues separate but equal Greek light reinforces, gender, norms, stereotypes and prejudices there seeking class action status. Asking the court to award damages and to order policy changes including fully integrating women at Yale fraternity. That's Meg Oliver reporting. Ten eighteen is the time. And it's.

"Back which would be a very bad thing. A quote from Senator Chuck Schumer yesterday localizing for his New York constituents even as he plays his national role as Senate minority leader. Our first guest today is Westchester and Rockland congresswoman Nita Lowey as we continue to bring on members of our local delegation from New York, New jersey, and Connecticut who are either newly elected in November's Blue Wave or newly powerful because of democratic control of the house and Nita Lowey case, it's the ladder. She is now the chair of the powerful house appropriations committee and is in the news for announcing four bills yesterday aimed at ending the government shutdown Nita Lowey has been in congress since nineteen eighty nine. She's the member of congress from the tappan Zee, I mean, Mario Cuomo bridge and the communities on either side in Westchester and Rockland. Thanks for coming on congresswoman, welcome back to WNYC. Thank you so much, and that's a new way. To describe it. I appreciate it. My district change every couple of years. Nice to be with you before we get to any specifics of these bills. Can you tell our listeners who may not be steeped in how congress works what the appropriations committee does? And why it might matter? The Democrats have control or that. You're now the chair. I certainly can it's such an honor for me to be chair. We have the honor and responsibility to figure out all the spending which comes to one point three trillion dollars. And now in terms of New York, I think it's important that you're listening to understand that this is education.
