"Cook bright and Gardner. They're passer rating is 37. So, you know, maybe that's some new changes some things up a little bit. They did become a little bit more run heavy earlier in the season when they're facing some of the dregs. You mentioned Cincinnati struggling a little bit on the ground defensively the last few weeks, maybe they changed something up and show a little bit more of a balanced attack that's probably the right way to go about this. But I look at this and it's just like a lot of people are and I think because it's on the national stage with Cincinnati, right there on the cusp of inclusion in the playoff. A lot is being made of the schedule. The strength of schedule for Cincinnati. But these teams play in the same conference. And the AAC is down obviously. SMU is kind of faced with those same questions. A lot of the sharp guys that I speak to, the word frauds are being thrown around in regards to SMU. Now I know early in the season based upon the schedule, there's a lot of sharp money over their wind total, but in terms of how things have played out and who they've beaten how they beat them. There are some serious question marks with SMU. And I look at SMU's defenses that they've faced, obviously, important when assessing a pass first offense, for defenses. Outside the top one O 5 in EPA per passal out. That SME has faced this season. Just one defense inside the top 50. And schedule adjusted EPA past defense with Houston. SMU lost that game and trailed at one point by three scores. Cincinnati's far and away, the best passing defense SMU's played. Now, there are some positive news. It looks like SMU's leading receiver, who has a 20% passing usage rate, Danny gray is apparently going to play sunny dike set on Tuesday. He's been batting a couple of injuries, but he should be good to go. What is interesting, right? It's more from the market side of things. Cincinnati hasn't covered in four straight games. The market doesn't seem to love them. A couple guys I speak with number grabbed SMU plus 13 or better. But Todd, I think if this somehow got to an area that slipped to 9 and a half and maybe eventually gets worked on to get there. I think we're going to have a vastly different sentiment. If Cincinnati -9 and a half pops into this market. It's always one of those things that's interesting because Cincinnati to your point, such a public team, everybody has talked about them since the college football playoff rankings were released about all you need style points, you need this, you need that. And you wonder on some level never having been in the spot or at least I haven't. You know, how much that weighs on you. When you start thinking about margin of victory rather than doing the little things, I would make the case that Cincinnati at this point can only focus on one thing. And that's winning football games trying to go 13 and O and flipping it to the committee saying, you know what? We've done everything we've can. We've seen upsets all over the college football landscape. If you want, keep us out, but suddenly a road win against what could potentially be an 11 and one noted aim team may be one of the best non conference wins that a top 5 team could have that finishes the season undefeated. So I think all you can do is take care of the task at hand. And like you talked about, I mean, SMU so much of what they want to do is through the air. Let's see if they will stay committed to Ulysses Bentley or Trey siggers. But I can see a scenario we finally get the bear cats to unleash some of what they've been harnessing and Desmond Ritter goes out there and moves the football with ease against an SME defense. Yeah, I mean, I think we've talked about this a little bit. And you can only control what you can control. It wasn't Cincinnati's fault that Indiana had a backup quarterback in that game. It's not Cincinnati's fault that UCF's quarterback went down. So that's the toughest part about this is when we're just yelling to the clouds that they haven't played anybody. You know, we know the AAC's down a little bit. But the teams that they've tried to schedule, and they just had some unfortunate breaks. The Indiana, if you get Indiana that we all thought, it looks like a better win. If you have horse doesn't go down in quarterback, that's a better win. And I don't know, it's always difficult trying to assess this whole thing and I don't really want to get into the college football playoff talk. We all know Alabama is better than Cincinnati. If that were the only merit, yeah, 100%. You know, it's tough because you do want to have that balance of being cognizant that a two win team might be better placed in the college football playoff than a team that beats absolutely nobody. At the same time, I really think that game last year against Georgia should be a little bit of an indicator that hey Cincinnati can hang with the big boys. They want Notre-Dame to go out and run the table as you alluded to. You want SMU after this week to go out and win a couple more games. It's just difficult. I understand Cincinnati hasn't really looked great the last few weeks. But this feels like an interesting spot to me. Where, again, we had some number grabbers, grab SMU, but I just, what I am hearing is potentially if this were to slip to 9 and a half that Cincinnati is going to be the side. So nothing for me at this juncture at this number. But things will get mightily interesting if this were to slip below double digits. It's always interesting because in college basketball, we know that the little guy can schedule whoever he wants, they'll play on a neutral field, but when college football schedules are done 8 to ten years in advance, there's nobody going in nipper stadium to play Cincinnati and one of the power 5 programs have to gain years ago going, you know what? I'm Alabama. Let's schedule Cincinnati on a neutral field. It doesn't carry the cachet. You're better off beating a power 5 program like Miami that may be a doormat than anything else. So there's obviously some noise in all of this. But what I do find extremely interesting as Oklahoma state will continue to get more support and rightfully so maybe for their potential inclusion in the college football playoff, they don't get dinged for a close win at home against Tulsa, but Cincinnati gets dinged for a close win at home against Tulsa. It's just funny when you look at some of the political forces in play there. But different discussion for a different day. And from the AAC, let's add out TV ACC where wake forest goes into Death Valley to take on the Clemson tigers. It's Clemson, a four and a half point favorite total in the game 57 and a half. The deacons have only won 9 games twice in school history. They'll get two cracks to get to the ten win mark for the first time. If they split their final two games, they would also win the division. First ever 6 O start in conference in school history for Dave colossus bunch. It's the second time they've won 6 league games in program history. The other came back in 2006. Meanwhile on the flip side Clemson, trying to avoid losing three conference games for the first time since 2010, when you look at weight they're the only team in the nation to score 35 points per game. They've done it against a schedule that's paper thin in my opinion and relatively fortune to get by NC state last week and a 45 42 victory..

"Away. And by the way justin williams will be on this show at five twenty. We'll get back to our poll question on the reds. And i just wanna flip the conversation about the bengals to where we were when this off season started. Because it's it's just there's something really interesting to me about where we are with this football team as we get set for minnesota on sunday afternoon but i i this was good and i wanted to play a part of it with you. Because you know let's face it. The bearcat season opens. And everybody's talking about the big twelve which most seemed to think is not only going to happen but that there's going to be some movement this week regarding uc and ucf and byu and houston ultimately moving to the big twelve. And so we had some some time in the post game show which i host. But let's let's be honest. The stars of that are dan. Hoard and jim kelly and fickle but i was not enough to murray state game and i said look. We'll talk about that but before we do that. I have a feeling by the time. The ball goes in the air on saturday. Nipper stadium that will have something a little more concrete when it comes to a. Uc's conference affiliation. Here's dan and jim. I think you're right. I think that news is going to become official sometime in the next week that cincinnati. Byu ucf and houston are going to be future members of the big twelve now. how soon. We'll cincinnati play in that league probably not for a couple of years this year and next remaining in the american maybe in the big twelve after that. But think about that when that happens if that happens. How do home basketball games against kansas west virginia and the reigning national champion baylor sound. How do football games against west. Virginia oklahoma state. Tcu sound the big twelve. Was the number one rated conference in college basketball last year. Football seems to be driving these things but to be able to play football in that league to have that basketball conference for bearcat basketball and to make an estimated somewhere between twenty and twenty five million dollars per year from tv instead of seven going forward pumping additional thirteen minimum of thirteen million dollars. A year into the coffers year after year after year..

"If you believe that this is just a blip on the radar. It's something that happens during the course of here if this is taking place in june no one's making a big deal about it you're going to defer to the fact that some of these guys have had good seasons already then. You probably think that this team is going to be okay over the next three and a half weeks. I'm sort of somewhere in the middle and not not to cop out. But that's that's sort of somewhere in the middle and i leaned towards thinking that this team between now and the end of the season offensively will wake up and i say that frankly and i shouldn't do this more from my heart than my head because watching him against lefties has been painful and seeing some of these guys dry up offensively after performing well for long stretches has been very damaging to these teams. Chances i'm interested in where your level of concern is five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty eight six six seven three seven seven six over six hundred of you voted and nearly half say full blown panic reds and cubs tonight at seven forty. Dave adult pre-game comments coming up in just about an hour and fifteen minutes. Luke fickle talk today. His team played great on saturday for thirty minutes. The final thirty minutes. They look like a team. That just couldn't wait to get off the field. I don't blame them. You'll hear the bearcats coach on a number of different things including his thoughts on the big twelve next on. Espn fifteen thirty. Hey by the way. We have the loop fickle radio show tonight at eight o five on. Espn fifteen thirty. You can hear from head coach after a forty nine. Fourteen win over miami on saturday afternoon slash evening at nipper stadium. I thirty minutes lived up to it right. We talked on this show on friday that this was a season about proving that this team could live up to the hype and meet and even exceed expectation. And you don't wanna draw too many conclusions after one game. You don't wanna draw too many conclusions after a game in which the bearcats were favored by twenty two and a half points but just based on what they showed on.

"A couple of games where you can show that you can play with power five school. They're getting to. They're going to indiana going to south bend so they were somehow able to win those games. And then you've got to navigate the american they. They'll they'll i think of all these teams that are said why not us. They have a schedule that allows them with the preseason ranking allows them to i think have a discussion to have a legitimate shot to get up into the top four. All right so. I'm gonna take what you just said and let's let's say they do that right. They they go to a you. They win they they go to notre dame and win and i'm making it sound easier then that's going to be because those are those are really good teams and now we're we're in october. They're still in the top ten. Maybe they're in the top five. I think you know where i'm going with. This college game day is never broadcast from outside nipper stadium. It's like a home game for you. Now make it happen. I love that you know and You know there's. There's just a handful of schools. We we've not been to So that would be. That would be a lot of fun. And i tell you i mean even imagined cincinnati before a game starts being in top seven in the country. I mean i mean there's seven seventh in the country and now. I talked to luke the other day and i said the interesting thing. Now for your team is y- you know. And he kind of develops his program to be a blue-collar chip on the chip on our shoulder. Kinda team and i think he recruits players. that fit that mold. And that's awesome. It's great way to think mark dantonio. Who's a buddy of his. Did that up in east lansing for years michigan state. And now all of a sudden. Now you're like a shiny new toy now. You're preseason number seven now everybody's telling you how great you are now. Everybody is telling you that. Oh you you'll be. You'll be saying it's such a different kind of pressure when you're expected to do it verse when you're mad at everybody because they don't respect you when now everybody does respect you and so how they handled that aspect. I think will really go a long way in defining. What kinda season they have this year they played at. Ucf in two thousand eighteen which was a breakthrough year and college. Game day was there. I had a chance to be down there for the event so it was cool. But i walked away from that going. Okay it's it's got to be in cincinnati so this is the year that i'm counting on this to happen. Who would be if college game day. Were to be broadcast in cincinnati. Who would be the ideal celebrity.

"The first flat disc record before his invention, engineers would press recordings on two cylinders. So you had these cylinders that you would put on a school. Essentially, that would then rotate and you could play it back on various devices. This were much easier to store right. You didn't have as much space as much bulk as a cylinder dead. They were easier to ship and once the manufacturing process was refined, they lasted a lot longer than cylinders dead as well. It took a while to get the right materials, but Once they did those disks just seemed more practical. Berliner made a deal with an enterprising manufacturer and machinist named Eldridge are Johnson Johnson developed a wind up spring motor for Berliners gramophones Now. Previously, those gramophones had relied on hand cranks so you would literally turn a crank, which would then turn the gears inside the device. And turn the platter so that you could listen to the disc being played back on the gramophone. Johnson did good work. He created a spring motor that worked reliably, but Berliner would enter into a sales agreement with a man named Frank C man. And this would lead to massive trouble. Frankie wanted more money for himself and eventually began to sell knockoffs of Berliners works while simultaneously bringing legal action much of its spurious in nature against both Berliner and Johnson. The process eventually prevented Berliner from selling gramophones in the United States and nearly bankrupted both Berliner and Johnson in the process, and this was infuriating to them. I mean, they were the ones who had created this technology, and now this salesman they had worked with Was claiming that they were the ones infringing on his patents, his ideas and his trade secrets. But in 1901 Johnson, Berliner and some other entrepreneurs got together and founded a new consolidated company that took Berliners facilities and Johnson's manufacturing plants as the basis for the new organization. And this was the victor talking machine company, which incorporated on October 3rd. 1901. So the victor talking machine company was older than the Radio Corporation of America that would not be born until 1919. But Sarnoff looked at the victor talking machine company and thought this is a way I could sell more radios. I could take this company and take their product. The The gramophones. Essentially, although they didn't call it that in the United States, they couldn't they started calling it things like the Victrola that was one that the victor company made. I can take that I can incorporate a radio into the design of those machines, sell it as a new product and sell more radios this way. Also, just as a quick aside, the victor trademark is one of the more famous ones in business history. It shows a dog, specifically a fox terrier sitting in front of a gramophone horn and the dog's head is tilted slightly. From a painting titled His Master's Voice, and the artist was Francis borrowed and it was made in 18 99. The dog was named Nipper and once belonged to the roads, nephew Mark Mark had tragically passed away. And then Francis saw Nipper one day sitting near a gramophone with his head cocked, and that led Francis to wonder what the dog's reaction would be if they had happened to be playing a recording. Of his old master mark speaking. That was the inspiration for the painting. They tried selling the painting as a magazine illustration to no avail, and ultimately sold it to the gramophone Company for the princely sum of £100 sterling. Johnson got permission from the gramophone company to use it for his products under the victor company, and Berliner had trademarked the design and, at some point transferred that trademark over to the victor company. The whole story is super fascinating, and I'm sure I'll devote a future episode to the victor talking machine company. But for now, let's remember that it started in 1901, and even though it grew out of a Noller, a company and that would eventually get incorporated. Into R C. A I'll explain more in just a moment, but first, let's take another quick break. For nearly a decade, Comcast has been helping students get ready. Call David back on show two thirty-eight interviewees. You tell some great stories about recording how the whole attraction came in him recording. If I'm not mistaken. He's he either co-wrote most it's funny stuff. Yeah, yeah, really really good stuff as much I love myself since Sonny Eclipse. I have to have to page mentioned it early. If they ever messed with Carousel progress. I'm going to be out there for taking there is nothing like a great big beautiful tomorrow. I you know, give you some off, you know, this could be this could be we'll have to say this could be the the top one for me to the part. I just love how the song changes from error to error. I just it's you know, Siri if we were ever in the room together. We're about a Mera Lauda from there. I was with you. Yeah, we get my wife dead. Get some looks from people when we when we were traveling from one one scene to the ex with I just think it's I mean obviously being a you know off after listening to six hundred episodes of the wdw radio show and learning what I've learned, you know the song of you know, how the song was built for GE. It takes them so much more memory. It's you know Waltz in the Sherman Brothers, but I just don't know if there's it's just a really great. It's a fun couple of June fall asleep. I hate people to say that go in there for the air conditioning fall asleep. Stop it. Anyways, I love me here. So progress It's it is in my in my trial and it's my birthday. So so you want to be controversial and talk about how you love now is the time. Well now it's not like it's controversial because it's you know, basically this is a love letter to Buddy X and the Sherman Brothers I love now is the time I think because of of when I heard it, right look I said at the top of this that a lot of the love and the feels that we have or are are grounded in, you know, Nostalgia and memories and now is the time now is the best time when when that song was introduced into the attraction around nineteen. Gosh. I'm trying to maybe eighty-three whatever it was in the early eighties, you know, Jesus wanted guests not to be thinking about what was coming tomorrow. They wanted them to buy washers and dryers today. So now is the time now is the power to do it. Yeah, and there was and there was something and I know maybe it was not a favorite of the Sherman Brothers, but I think because remember being in Tomorrowland with my dad and and you know be with my mom and my brother there was dead. That sort of just stuck with it. I look still love Great Big Beautiful tomorrow. I'm not going to sing either one of them here, but I do sing, you know while I'm in the car or by myself. So often you kind of like a lot of people who to catch him know you don't want to eat trust me. Don't worry and you can hear those in the Tomorrowland Loops as well. But you know what? I mean, as long as we're talking about attractions, I have to give a little bit of love to it's not current but as long it's again, it's it's you know, 1975 blue module. Oh, I remember riding Space Mountain with my dad when they used to have the seats where you sort of sat. Like I sat like basically like in between my dad's legs and remember giving my life because my head back and whatever but I remember and when it opened in 75, it was sponsored by RCA and as you entered the attraction, you heard an instrumental version of the phone number. Song which was here's to the Future and you saw the RCA. What was the name of the RCA dog? Now I will give you a free audio guy off liberal actors name is slippery slippery. It was Nipper Nipper was the RCA dog, and he was in this life UFOs that had the big sort of gramophone and it said R welcomes you but the song was here's to the Future and was here's to the Future and year. I want to sing it but I can't I'll see we're done. That's one of those. Here's to the Future. Here's to the Future. Here's the future. It's a world full of color of Perfect Harmony off the leaks militi RCA leads the way our system. So I'm doing it in my very Jazzy seventy-five. I I do not remember CA reach the way I did and then they had to all be Petty when RCA left the actually tweaked a little bit and took RCA out of it. Okay that little bit of time. But yeah, here's to the Future Thursday from from the this mid-to-late 70s was was still one of my favorite not there anymore, but I dig and clearly we're not through because we haven't been to a parade or seen fireworks. So just need to mention that right now. Go ahead. I.

"Brian Combs, you never go home. Do you know you have a place on the seventh floor here? I've seen it. It's very nice. Oh, why there and not here? That's the question. FC Cincinnati fans are asking Reds Bengals fans wonder Now that we learned the Columbus crew will be the first professional team in the state of Ohio. I have fans in their stadium. The crew, apparently ignoring the advice of the health department in the city of Columbus is going to have 1500 people at the match Sunday when FC Cincinnati travels up 71 take on the Columbus crew and the hell Israel battle. Of the decision they say was made based on capacity inside the stadium and the rules that the governor of Ohio laid down for sporting events. Basically, he said, no more than 1500 people. Ah, at any sporting event. So that was what, like the high schools were going under. Wait a minute. That stadium is smaller than Nipper. Today is it holds 20,000. So you'll be looking at about 8% capacity 15,000. The states have 1500. Excuse me was the maximum. The state said that anybody could have Ah, and you had to stay at 15% capacity at the same time, just basically saying, Well, you know, to hell with the big difference between they say like, Ah, FC Cincinnati the Reds the Bangles is that in Columbus, the crew own their stadium. It is their stadium. They don't lease it from any government agency or a university. I understand like Cincinnati does with Nippert. So, basically, if FC Cincinnati one that did the same thing, they'd have to get approval not just from the health leaders but from the University of Cincinnati. That's not happening. Pompeo Warns Energy Majors Over New Russian Gas Pipelines

"United States efforts to stop Russia from completing a pipeline that would funnel natural gas to Europe. At a press conference Wednesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened sanctions against any individual or company that helps complete the Nord Stream to it's a clear warning to companies aiding and abetting Russia's malign influence projects. I will not be tolerated. Get out now. Or risk of the consequences. Jennifer Start with the basics. What are we talking about? And why is the us opposed to this pipeline? Sure. So the North Dream, too. Is this gas pipeline? It's a Russian gas project. It's basically this long pipeline that's going to carry gas from from Russia to Germany and Central Europe. It's being built by a company that's owned by by Gazprom, Russia's state run gas company. And it's basically you know Russia's attempt to you know. Broadened its reach into the European gas market on the U. S, on the other hand, sees it very clearly as a Russian attempt to exploit European dependence on Russian energy. And, you know, sees this as a threat to the transatlantic alliance and things like that, and making Europe kind of more beholden to Russia. On DSO. So that's kind of the basics here on DH. What's going on is that the U. S. Has essentially threatened to impose sanctions on on any companies that are helping Russia build this pipeline. So So again, while this is being built by Gazprom, the Russia gas company half of the funding for the projects is actually coming from five European energy group so Shell you Nipper, Om VI and several others. And so the U. S. Is essentially threatening to impose sanctions on these companies for helping Russia and you know, it's It's very much the US trying to kind of push Russia back. You've heard President Trump say this many times, you know, criticizing Germany directly and Angela Merkel for you know their dependence on Russian energy. And so it's very much part of kind of that that push but at the same time, you know this is this is throwing up very clear rifts between us and its European allies. Because Germany very much wants this pipeline to go through. Yes, they're dependent on Russian gas, but They are dependent on Russia. Guess so. They need it right. So so if it's causing some very serious riffs in the transatlantic alliance, even though the kind of point is too Help improve the transatlantic alliance. So it's this really big rift and it's not really clear what's goingto happen because if the U. S goes through with this, they're essentially sanctioning European companies, which is a huge You know, kind of escalation. The US sanctioning companies in Allied countries, Literal Allies, Treaty allies, and so it's It's a really big deal. You know, I recently back when we were still allowed to travel in the before times spent a few days reporting in Poland and it was a huge conference topic of conversation there. Poland Being a very close ally of the U. S not wanting You have North stream kind of go through it, and it would have to you. And so it's a very huge, huge issue in Europe. Even though most Americans probably don't even think about it. Give us some context. David about you know why this pipeline is so important to countries in Europe. So basically, Russia is guaranteeing of steady and relatively cheap flow of energy into Europe. So this is you know something that Angela Merkel has signed off on despite some skepticism in Germany, and certainly lots of skepticism in Washington, and they've already made this decision to do it right. The project is most of the way done and so that you know, there's a lot of frustration in Europe with with the US trying to derail this project that's already Ah, a lot of the way complete. But then there's just the same frustration in Washington saying, Hey, we warned you about this. At the very beginning. We said this was a bad idea and you kept doing it, so it has been a kind of it's been a thorn in the side of You know that relationship for four years now? Really? And Trump has particularly enjoyed. I think calling out. Angela Merkel is someone who had taken a tough line on Russia. Over Ukraine but had not over this issue. So he points out the hypocrisy there. Wanna quickly touch on another story out

Russia Europe United States Germany Angela Merkel Gazprom President Trump Central Europe Poland Mike Pompeo Nord Stream Abetting U. S Jennifer Start Ukraine Washington David

I do too I mean the cyclones battle for Kelly Cup every single year and It just I don't know I mean they're technically now. I'm trying to think. Are they? Technically the last team to win a championship in Cincinnati actually yeah, I think I think that they are I. Think you're right about that I. don't know if it's the cyclones on the commandos that indoor football team at the gardens before it closed down in got destroyed because. The. Yeah the. The commandos only suffered like three losses in three years, and they won all three championships it was it was phenomenal, but then the head coach took a new job, and then franchise got shut down and that was the time we had the Dayton sharks up here so. I'm sorry I'm getting you know I will say Xavier does have pretty good club hockey team. If you ever get a chance to watch him I think. I've heard that actually. Maybe maybe I can venture out at some point. Find a little Xavier, ice hockey story. Yeah, I. Think I think that'd be cool. Just because you don't get athletic scholarships because it's a club team, but at the same time Xavier and you see are pretty good, so I. Definitely you know. I recommend that if you could make it out to a game, just because hockey's great. And again I could talk forever on that, but you know. I won't I promise? Let me, ask you this. What is it like being a sports fan? Sports follower a sports reporter in Cincinnati Ohio. It's a it's a Cliche, but honestly it's dream. Come true man. I can't remember growing up in this town I was born in nineteen, eighty seven. When I was a little kid, the the reds win the world series that beat the Oakland as in Nineteen Ninety and I just sports has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it makes perfect sense to me that it's it's continued the way that has you know obviously I've gotten lucky along the way, but. sports in this town and you know I think Cincinnati people like to like to laments and say that sports are so special earlier. I think that they're special everywhere. I think that the way that people rally behind their teams in Cincinnati and the way that people care. Makes it endlessly interesting to me and you know to that point. It's like you watch a new franchise. FC Cincinnati pop up and people just have flocked to that team and you know they support them without fail. And it's it's cool, man. It's like I. Tell people all the time. I feel sorry for people at don't Love Sports. I I really do this a little bit of something for everyone in Cincinnati and Earth's FC Cincinnati that's. Maybe not as much playoff successes. People would like, but I tell you how they stack nipper stadium and how they're going to stack the West End Stadium once that's finally open. I Wa I just? In such a short span of time line to that's that's the crazy thing. I know man they It's it's impressive. How quickly they've taken off in kind of cultivated a a loyalty among their fan base, and I. Just I think that that speaks to to what this town is like and what we love when we love our sports here in Cincinnati man. Absolutely, it's a great..

Judy Garland's Top Movie Moments

"Welcome to film spotting Josh. We both took a crash course judy. Garland movies of the last few weeks and today is the final. Are you ready. I think I'm ready yeah I haven't I haven't seen everything. I don't even know if Michael Phillips is seen everything she's major so yeah. I feel prepared. They're still blind spots but this should be I think appropriate to our styles of preparing preparing for a show you methodically doled out the movies took them in over a few weeks and I crammed just didn't college. I procrastinated and I had to hit everything thing at the last minute to be fair. It helps when we actually commit to something for weeks. Had A title which is very rare for the show is rare well. Let's find out if Michael Phillips has is in fact seen every Judy garland movie we welcome in the man who will be handling proctoring duties for our garland examined is Michael Phillips from the Tribune. How are you good to see you goes good to see you. It's been a while I mean it's been a long time. I know it'd be on. I know we do this. More regular like Obama's. First Tournament feels like a slight exaggerate so how many how many do you think you've seen countered them up the garlic first of all. I had a wrong. I thought it was beverly girl. I'm on my three sons so I prepared all wrong. That's next show my next issue. That'll be a download killer. Yes but you know I'd say if you look at all the titles including the the obscure secure ones before she was advised. I've seen two-thirds maybe enough to feel pretty smug about my knowledge base compared to you guys okay okay well. That's all that really matters but let me ask you. Is there one at the tip of your tongue. That is a blind spot. You're embarrassed about. Is there a garland film. You've always meant to see that you haven't y actually I joked. I joked with the email to you guys earlier today about about pigskin parade or actually it was on twitter yes yes. I've never seen pigskin parade now. How you were just needling I was kneeling. I haven't seen pigskin parade. so you know if we can do a whole show on that next week at appreciate it could get to it but no that's of the biggies you know there's a few others in the early forties that I haven't seen him never seen presenting Lily Mars a lot of other things that would just sort of make you look click nipper the dog just staring. You know like what presenting. Lily were so these obscure titles to to to share explore someday later later in the show. We'll talk a little bit about hustlers. The new dramas set in the world of UPSCALE GENTLEMEN'S CLUBS IT Stars J. Lo and Constance Wu Michael and I both had a chance to see that that movie we open to big box office numbers last weekend. We've also got pull results to our question about which acclaimed movie director needs to make a movie set in space a lot of great feedback from that one including one Josh like last week. I might just be setting aside in my back pocket. Just bring on you upon. I'm going to have to leave the studio. We'll see but first I judy garland. The garland biopic Judy starring Renee Zellweger opens in limited release including here in Chicago next weekend the reviews so far pretty pretty much what you'd expect from the genre that Josh knows as his most detested movie genre the biotechs a little strong but not my favorite Los Zellwegger herself and getting a lot of praise now Michael. You have made a little bit of the festival around here lately. Did you see no no tomorrow to screening tomorrow. Does the does the listener goodwill no no. It doesn't know that you're going to see gonNA see a trend. We will have to have you back on to hear your thoughts. I could go on singing. I'll I'll go on singing. That's what I'll of course we may or may not get to a full review of Judy here on the show but we did want us the movie as an opportunity to spend some time time on Garland herself who until recently was kind of a blind spot for both of us Josh with the exception of the wizard of Oz of course it really was the Manelli marathon where we got to dive into her work. Is it fair to say that maybe the wizard of Oz isn't the best introduction one could have to Judy garland because Saad as a kid and many times sense and I don't know. Oh that a place to her strengths now that I've seen obviously over the rainbow is a central piece of focus and made her you know center to another level level of notoriety and fame but the character I don't think is sort of a passive character could be a little whiny and I held off on Garland for a while thinking meanwhile that's Judy Garland and then I think it was producers. Sam's pushing of Easter parade a couple of years ago. That was my first non wizard Judy Garland film the One with Fred Astaire and I was just completely shocked. At what a great president. She wasn't that so very different and then you're right. It was the Manelli marathon that really gave me a good sense of what she could do as well as catching up with nineteen fifty four is a star is born when the remake came out so yeah than really immersing myself men for this list. I in her stuff and surprise surprise Adam She's really something yeah. Check out the big brain on Josh. He's done all his homework. Shoot down the conclusion Asian. Is that needs to know about you the wizard of Oz I was. I'm a crammer like Adam. I'm doing the most I could watch the catch up on stuff. I hadn't seen in years years and years and stuff. I I knew I liked but hadn't seen in a long long time and just the the real pleasure of watching shing concentrated way of you know a little a little bit here and there for a couple of days of somebody who is just such an astounding triple threat who did did the top of the top of the heap and I mean I mean she. It's it's there's a handful of other. Mgm Stars Gene Kelly Fred mystere and then you know one or two others but it's it's Kelly astaire in Garland and then there's everybody else and that and that's when you think about what that actually means and when you talk about the work they did together with the garlanded with Kellyanne garlanded with a stereo. It's just you know. I don't have the same love for Easter parade that you do Josh but you know the talent level is just kind of astonishing though and it's just sort of a I don't know I don't I can't even be cynical about how what what a what a strong response. I had just kind of like just sort of like soaking up the talent because it's not somebody I grew up with loving from age eight on on you know I mean I mean I. I wasn't really a wizard of Oz annual viewer at that age you know because if the marksmen does Ron I was mark of course they were the Marx brothers. Those were not in the was it of is you know I would've actually loved to see him as ten minutes but the radar now jokes aside Josh I do think it's fair to say and this May bear out as we get into our picks that we've discovered there are depths to judy. Garland is a performer that probably aren't fully on display away in the wizard of Oz. So why don't we go ahead and jump into those picks we are going to devote this show to our top five. Judy garland moments and we're going to start it off with an an expert voicemail a guest opinion here from a previous contributor to the show does Ray Garcia Michael. You put us in touch with desert initially. She Played Madeleine Colin in Damian Chazelle debut film Guide Madeline on a park bench. She's currently an associate professor of Latin American Latino and Caribbean studies at Dartmouth and if you're a longtime listener the show you'll recall that she joined us for our top five musical numbers back in two thousand sixteen that was a tie in with our review of Damian Chazelle la La land and she's got a great pick for her favorite Judy Garland. Hi this is Deborah Garcia leaving a message for the Judy Garland show show if I had to choose my favorites judy moments which is indeed a tough task it would have to be rather obvious choice. I'm afraid of the have yourself Merry Little Christmas Song in Navy in Saint Louis. Your saw aw little let your heart the next year. Oh it's it's really an anomaly in musicals of that era in the sense that it is a song that is quite dark. It's a moment that's quite dark. even rather kind of foreboding it's Judy of course in her character esther trying to console her younger sister sure as they prepare to leave St Louis and moved to New York. The lyrics of course are storied lyrics. Now we know that there were at least two different versions of lyrics. The first is one being much darker than the first and it's it's something that quite rare for Hollywood musicals of the period to delve into such dark seems uh-huh change and family separation and perhaps separation is eternal and even though she's trying to comfort her little sister to D- it's clear that esther has her own doubts about what is about to happen and we hear that I think in in Judy Garland's voice voice up here. She's a masterful singer so we hear both the kind of conviction and hopefulness times that things will work out all right and then at other moments I think including the very very end of the song is she seeing those last final words we hear that there is some doubt there on her part some day soon you who beat him and and also just say that that for me you know that song has always been a kind of touch tone in my life something that has helped me kind of mark the various listen turns of my journey's first away from home three thousand miles away to college again leaving a college that I came to love and considering home and embarking on a new career and then to of course marriage and and having a kid and every year I revisit is it that film and that song and it helps me to kind of chart where I've been but also to help me brace myself for the future. Thanks
