Sunday Surprises: What Went Wrong With the Vikings?

"The team you cover. The vikings appear to have a pretty favorable matchup to start the season facing joe borough in his first game back from acl surgery but a theme we saw on sunday was a lot of games not going as expected. So take us through. What was going wrong for the vikings and what was going right for the bengals for much of this game. Yeah i think the biggest thing that went wrong for the vikings had to do with the penalties twenty four already. Four penalties is opening drive on the vikings after that holding call. I think that there were. I wanna say five false start. Penalties and five holding penalties along with defensive pass interference. Most of those occurred in the first half but the vikings racked up over ninety yards of penalties. It turns out. They got five sacks on borough they forced the bengals to three and thirteen on third down kind of all the fundamentals that you look for me there were decent in the red zone the fundamentals that you look for like a good defense or even a good offense were there but a lot of penalties just took them back. I mean the first drive of the game. They gained forty yards of offense only gained three yards on the field. I'm sure you know mike zimmer. Being the vikings head coach is notoriously intense probably was extremely relaxed in not furious at all about any of these penalties right. Yeah of course i mean. He just rolls with the punches. You know you figure that they will probably take care of themselves now. He was as you would expect. He was pretty vocal at halftime about all of the issues that he's coming up but again most of those issues did occur in the first half. So i guess you know for whatever that's worth. I guess whatever's halftime speech was about cleaning things up. May work voice

The Cost Of Raising A Star High School QB

"So antonio for people who don't follow college football super closely. Who is dorrie and thompson robinson is. Ucla's starting quarterback right now dopson robinson with the at dow field by called entity. Stay off. yes. He did touchdown. Ucla he's a guy's guy who can run you can throw. And he doesn't really well touchdown. Tops of robinson falling backwards felt like probably ninety yards away. He's very outgoing and like he's very aware to coast kelly just us. You know we tell you wanna know at a time and one game at a time. So that's what you're seeing right now. His numbers of improved. His completion percentage improved each year. And this year i thought he was really really good. This is about to be an all time. High waist can swim urge. You know just both on the ground with his arm and tony. You recently have long conversation with during his mother about the families football journey to get a sense of what it takes to raise a blue chip quarterback these days so first of all tell us a little bit about during mother mel the thompson robinson. She's a professor at unlv. And i know. She took a very big role in raising doreen and helping them go to this journey. She separated with his father. She's kind of the one who is doing most of the heavy lifting. He has a sister as well such as the family who seems very self aware all right so when did the families. Football journey begin. When during i start playing football obviously playing when he was very young and playing pop warner r. e. and then because we live in las vegas the we have you know good weather year round know the fall and spring in tournaments in the summer. So you know. Football is almost year round this prisoner. Sophomore year he played some receiver than towards his judy. That's when he was solely focusing on quarterback. There's not a lot of available quarterback trainers in las vegas so he had to travel the phoenix to some work. Done glow to seem as quarterback coach very often. Because of the like once a year he actually worked with in person. One year never wait. There's more virtual learning which is kind of unique before the pandemic so his mom would watch him throw passes and she tried to use what she learned from the quarterback coach to kind of teach dory and what to do via video know with uploaded to kogo. Dr been shared with his coach. And then they would you know talk about it or you know. They would go through his game film or other film and just talk about like. What are the things that you should be looking at which you should be doing. So i assume that this private quarterback coaching he was getting was fairly pricey. What other expenses was his family taking on as dorian was coming up through high school. Yeah there's that tuition and schools during bishop gorman in las vegas twelve thirteen thousand dollars a year you. We were paying for camp in spirit packs. You know the team travels dollars right there. But then when you're talking about college recruiting camps in the average trip probably costs about sixteen hundred dollars per trip There's a lot of the unofficial visit. NFL explains why there was no pass interference called on play that eliminated Saints

"We're going to. We're going to make football show because that's what people like over the weekend. Everybody who listens to this show presumably watched all of the football games or most of all of the football guess. He missed the playoffs playoff in Hawaii. The yes I missed that one Justin Thomas I saw this morning. I thought it was really nice but I missed it last last night because it came on pretty late We're going to do you because the ratings of the NFL up all across the board because the interest in the NFL is up all across the board and because each of those those games was quite interesting in its own way including terrible terrible. Coaching decisions by both coaches in the Houston Buffalo Game. We're going to talk about out this for an extended period of time in the first segment. Michael Wilbon will join us in second segment. We're GONNA limit news and go right to old guy where we're going to talk about the Golden Globes and the matchups for next week. That's what we're going to the show probably the same length. But I WANNA do it if you don't mind I WANNA do it that way also. WanNa thank Clarendon Tola for Baking Cooke's for Claire Gary Braun Chris Cillizza Michael Kornheiser Nigel. Who has nothing to do except for on the boards because we're not sleep keeps pressing one button? So He's been news cancelled forever now just today. If you don't mind especially the best thing is not gonNa work out just I you know I'm old and I thought why not like Michael said to me last night we were talking about the possibility of of Michael. Are you shaking your head. You don't want me to. Would you go ahead down the fourth wall. People talking about Mike Lees. I won't share this on air dead. Yeah go ahead Michael Says Cillizza how how do we get rid of him. Nicely to the change in the show today. I let's start. Let's start with yesterday's which is going to go backwards. I'm just can start with the Minnesota game because of all the games the end result of that game is the most surprises so like I said on the PTI show on Friday. I'll take Tennessee. Plus Five Live and a half all day and all night doesn't mean I think they're gonNA win. I'm GONNA take those points New Orleans. Losing at home in overtime to Minnesota is stunning drew. BREES did not have a great game he had a very bad fumble in drive. That could have changed in the fourth quarter changed. Everything around. He got picked never gets picked. I mean he did not have a great game. There are three quarterbacks forty years old and up over the weekend and they all lost. We'll get to that but even with brees not having a great game. They tied the game. They got into overtime there at home and they yielded the first drive. That's it see around. see you around Kirk cousins who. I am extraordinarily critical of on a regular basis was very good and kirk cousins to Adam Adam field and had to make up for fumble early. You know but I don't feel did that pass. That wins the game. Now there's a third downplay because what you don't want to do is have to kick a field goal because because you don't want to give New Orleans the ball on the one. Yeah you don't WanNa do that. On the third downplay they go in the left. Hand top corner of the end zone to Kyle Rudolph is about twelve aid aide just like that and by the way quickly give cousins credit. That was a terrible snap. The snap his way to his right he basically knocks it with his right hand. Quickly gathers it because you it's all timing and throws a faith throws the fate and Rudolf reaches up. He's much taller than defender and he gets it in the process of doing that he pushes off. There's no question he pushes off. Does it rise to the level of offensive pass interference for me in a playoff game and I have to give context here. New Orleans has tragically lost in Hoon's replay off games in a row cheated in one cheated by by their own stupidity in another with defensive back and I mean I honestly either call offense a pass. Interference would have so I did not I mean I I watched the play. Did Not in real time necessarily see the wrangle back is in front of your Reina Vision Right. So they call it a touchdown a apparently appropriately to me and then you see the replay and and I did think to myself. Like oh my goodness could they. Could they possibly possibly overturn this. I mean it. And we've all seen their explanation and said there was handed both sides. It didn't rise to level pass interference. I mean I'm sorry by no objective measure to me was that not pass interference and in fact is in fact a couple hours later they called the same thing on hollister tight end from. I'm from Seattle and on much less meaningful circumstance but I mean I just felt like the league. We're getting out of the way this one. I mean there's no way every time it's the UNCANNY situational right. We know this. It's like it's like a Games are raft. Basketball game is reverend different right. The game is rough differently in the last thirty seconds than it it is and that's situationally you cannot. I don't think when I watched it and I watched the replay. He pushed off a little bit. Did it it was. It did not to me anyway. I think I disagree with you. Guys did not to me look agree. Gis I think Rudolph was bigger. The defensive back had his back this business. Being that push back. Chris Locate fully extends. I think it was his left arm. Yeah if he is allowed to do that he catches that ball. A hundred injured time. He cannot be defended. Unless you play. Just there's so many calls they show throughout the game when they every time on a pass Where not every time? Seventy percent of the time on a pattern when they show the slow motion the other guy. The the DB is has his arm wrapped around around the guy's waist or is holding. His arm gets there. I just think it's very subjective. That's fine but I agree with that but I would also agree that the saints should not be shafted million better cost the saints again. Plenty of opportunities it. Certainly when you were watching the game I ah in the flow of it and when tased him hill like in three straight plays a three-stroke they score a touchdown. Now it's twenty seventeen right gary to have that right was twenty. I needed to twenty twenty twenty seven hundred twenty and then they get back they get it back and take some hill like three times. Basically the the one where he runs to the left where it looks like. He's tackled and he spins runs for thirty arts. Well they're definitely going to win then. And then brees fumbled. I mean it was very i. I lost fumbling. The ball get hit. No sort of this is arm gets hit a little bit. I'm sorry I'm busy trying to reconstruct your show on the fly without telling you so allowed back in so so tension is good for the show is for Knuckleballer To to to tie it up. What was the forty nine yard or from lots? They're kicking it through. Yeah man that went about now three feet off the ground and easier kick at the end of the first half a ball Games kick forty something already three but that's an easier kick so that game. Let me say one other thing about that game as someone who was a kirk cousins fan when he was here. I'm not going to criticize Kirk. Cousins played fine. He was he was great in that last. Drive the drive. If they lose the haters are going to look at that stat line that would have been seventeen of twenty nine hundred and ninety yards picked and he didn't do anything bad. Oh he had a good game and the pass was just

"Not sticking with everything sorry. I'm going to go a gram is a fact on this one too I city lies going to go for three fifty I think in one goes for over a hundred today Stephen over three speaking of se Kwan Barkley who you alluded to Jeff he will lead all players in yards from scrimmage last season Barkley pulled off that feat in both games one away to the first meeting one forty two with a second let's so with you Jeff hi Melissa I think the game plan here is we all guys we know is the run the football right so you got to stick with that game plan and I still I still think that you know eighty yards to ninety yards rushing they're going to get the ball who am receiving maybe forty forty five so he's over a hundred yards what other players gonna get more than a hundred hundred twenty yards in total I I I gotta go fact here I think that he's going to and listen this Dallas defense is no joke okay so it's gonna whoever wins this one you can have a lot of work ahead of them the good afternoon. how much of the whole yeah I'm gonna go with Barkley combined for one fifty plus from scrimmage okay so yeah I I have no problem go in fact on this one because even if a groom gets maybe one twenty in the air Barkley will out gain him with the receiving and rushing combine yeah this is an easy one if if the question is simply giants that's easy it's going to be parkway will someone from Dallas get closer to one fifty I don't think it's gonna be the running back so I think that could be one of the wide receivers that would do and I think that's asking a little bit March but not impossible I think it's closer than people might think but I'm gonna go back I think Barclay it is it out because you get somewhere around seventy seventy five received Walmart Cooper to answer your question John would be the most attractive but it yet or is Jenkins locks up with him you wonder how many opportunities he's gonna have to really light it up you live by the way real good status from that match of last year two doors Jenkins in that final giving it some more Cooper did not allow one yard after catch so he did a real good job tackling a battery got the ball which prevented a lot of big plays guarded him on most place except when Cooper went to slide cook right five catches on eleven targets for only a thirty one yard door couple plays we did Pete Jacobs oppressed I couldn't get it to one a couple double move what shape and then that will be a product but we got to see if the giants can generate that type of pass rush to prevent plays like that tonight well that's why Michael Gallup and Randall Cobb will likely see the youth movement in the giants secondary today are I would go step aside when we come back we'll get you over or under part two of our roundtable discussion for first the network more people rely on gives you more get amazing rewards like NFL.

"Line. Mike Golic, Trey wingo here delighted to be joined now on golden legal bar fine. NFL analyst, Tim Hasselbeck. Joining us in studio. I mean, he is fine. Giving us the straight talk. Brought to you by straight talk wireless. Best phones. Best networks, no contracts that trae how you doing. Introduction. Backstory. Yeah. So what surprised you the most from yesterday the bears losing more the way that Lamar Jackson? The ravens could not get anything going on offense. The way that the ravens going to get anything going on offense. You think about it? I mean, you're fine. I I appreciate that. And Lamar Jackson has been fine as well. Except for you look at it just nine rush attempts for Lamar Jackson about last time. We saw me at twenty rush attempts. I mean, they had been running him about twenty times a game and people couldn't deal with them. I mean, he just was so fast. They were getting explosive plays that way. And so I guess that's the most surprising thing. I just heard the sound from Anthony Lynn, basically, saying like he was surprised that you know, if you would've told him they would hold them to think it was under one hundred yards rushing. That's I don't think anybody expected that to happen is most certainly didn't to me. That's the biggest surprise. Yeah. They did they held what the hell until one hundred to the ravens had ninety yards rushing. Lamar Jackson ran the ball nine times. I think when they play just a few weeks ago that he only Iran at thirteen times. I think it was under his he'd been seventeen or eighteen times looking at it. Yeah. He ran. No against the last time when they played sixteen week sixteen when they played a Los Angeles. He ran the ball below what he normally did as well. Did you think there was a possibility of them going back to Joe flacco mortar? I certainly thought that it was a possibility sounds like John Harbaugh talked about discussing it. You know, obviously Tony Romo drown the broadcast. It seemed like he thought it was a good move at that point. But you know, train are talking about this on NFL primetime last night. The reality is like Joe flacco wasn't exactly instant offense for them. Now, we probably would all agree right now. Joe flacco is a better pather. Lamar jackson. But Lamar because of his unique skill set just can kind of give you more explosive plays. I mean, you think about the place scrambling around he hits hits Dixon for the kind of big catch and run that got them down in tight hits Crabtree on a double move for a touchdown prior to that. So I actually think that the decision to stick with him was the right decision by John Harbaugh because I think he was the one that was going to generate more explosive plays and Joe flacco. Nine weeks. They couldn't block up front. You end up pulling Hearst. They're left guard bozeman, and he didn't fare any better, you know, against Melvin Ingram. So I think that you know. Putting flacco back there a guy that has less escape ability. I don't know that that was going to help that we also gets rid of this law a little quicker though. I mean, that's the one thing that Lamar does Lamar holds onto the ball. Think about the plate of Dixon. It's him holding onto the football forever. So I I don't think there was a good solution. I certainly don't think that putting flacco win was necessarily going to change the outcome of that game. Yeah. I guess my only thought on when when I hear people saying if you do that you mentally can lose Lamar Jackson. I'm not gonna lie. I'm I'm kind of tired of that too to think that quarterback. So that weak minded, I mean, I think is a is a disservice to quarterbacks out there. And and I think people probably are saying that if you think about the Brock Osweiler Peyton Manning thing. You know, what I mean, it was like, wow, okay. Right now, bro at the time. Brock Osweiler was helping them win. Right. They move back to Peyton Manning when he hit and there was not paternity in the Broncos offer Osweiler contract as do the Houston. Texans. It sounded like he was felt jilted by the organization for pulling him and putting Peyton Manning back in. Look at that was his feeling. I don't know that Lamar would feel that way. I'm sure as a competitor. He would have been frustrated had he been taken out of that game. He clearly gave them a chance to be banned in the game. Got into one score ahead. The ball. Yeah. Yeah. I just one guy plays that position. And so when you get pulled for somebody else, whether guys are sensitive about it or not, you know, I think can determine whether you have the right guy. But but ultimately, I thought it was the right move. Timmy, Hasselbeck are fine. NFL analyst joining us in studio today giving us the straight talk on what we saw over wildcard weekend. The other thing that I thought was interesting about that ravens game. I want you to listen to this. Because we we alluded to it that these two weeks sixteen and that re- that rushing attack gave the chargers some problems. Here was Anthony Lynn after the game talking about seeing that same offense for the second time in three weeks. The more times you see that offense. The better you're going to be against it. I used to run that offense. And I remember we started out really fast won four in a row. But when people got enough papers they could catch up to us. I think this would happen today. We saw it enough. He's referring to his time when he was the offensive coordinator. And then the head coach was the interim head coach of direct Ryan was fired in buffalo. And they they ran that offense thought he was talking about we coach in high school. They ran that off. You could also apply to there. It is a Reutemann rudimentary offense. But if you're going with the mar- Jackson, that's some of the stuff your banking on right? And it clearly Anthony Lynn is saying, hey, that can get you once, but eventually we'll figure that part out. So Jon Harbaugh said after the game Tim Lamar's our quarterback going forward. They're going to have to find other things that he can do he needs to develop better as a passer. I think that's the case for all these quarterbacks. So whether it's Mitch Trubisky. Whether it's Lamar to me that doesn't matter. It just you need to be able to pass from inside the pocket one. Because it exactly what Anthony land is talking about when you're defending that style of offense. And then to we go back to the number of Carey's. I mean, just you can't have a guy like for this stretch run, you know, that they had gone on since the flacco injury. They were running Lamar but to do that over a sixteen game season year after year after year. I just don't think a guy can. Hold up, especially a guy his size. So, you know, you go back to prior to the draft and people got all upset with Bill Polian about why people would maybe look at him at another position. But the reality is this is exactly why we saw I mean, he he my feeling was he should get a chance to play quarterback. He's been given that chance, and I think that he proved that he should be a quarterback with that being said. He played the position differently than anybody else. That's playing the position. I mean, let's be honest. Oh, absolutely runner. He was fastest guy in the field, or at least look that way many times. But if he's gonna play via decade-long starter at the quarterback position he needs to be a better passer from inside the completely agree. But the game has changed. I think enough to where you can get away with a little more running. But he was an awesome weapon without question without question. But he is definitely going to have to improve on the passing completely agree. The other side had the winning team the chargers they're going to go to New England. And you wanna talk about a complete difference for a defense that Lamar Jackson a guy who's just learning. How to throw in the NFL to possibly the greatest you know of all time at the quarterback position. But the defense also knows exactly where he's going to be in the pocket. So big difference air. And while the end, though, the charges have been great on the road this year by speak to it as well as anybody think about when. When you when you play the ravens and your Melvin Ingram. And you're like, wait a second. They're running right at me. And they're not blocking me like I'm not really paid for this situation. Like, I'm not used to this. Now. All hey, here's the deal. You get to rush the passer. I think like those guys are probably thrill. Pass rushing several. Yes. I'm not gonna read me anymore. Now, I actually get just beat the guy in front of me. And I got a chance if I can get there soon enough to get to break. So I I think in some ways it helps them it's a it's it's a strength of the chargers for rush the passer, and it's been a weakness of the patriots in you know, in terms of pass pro this season. Well, we know one thing for sure is that Tom Brady is not holding the ball like Lamar Jackson. You're gonna see a lot of dump off to Rex Burkhead. Just hit the dirt live to fight another place. He'll do that. And. You got me. Good move on. We got a lot more to talk to with a resident heartthrob Tim Hasselbeck, including heartbreak in Chicago are fine. NFL analyst. We got to that. "The rest of that team struggling, but the titans dare Ken redo and well CJ to K brought up first guy since two thousand nine when he did this to have a game with a ninety yard touchdown yard touchdown both in the same game. Obviously those guys dare Kendra and Chris Johnson both on the Tennessee titans. Lombardi last night just looking at that game. What was your your first takeaway from Thursday night football? Well, I miss Blake. I gotta be honest. I misspoke. Aac? I mean, look anybody who thinks Cody Kessler is starting NFL quarterback is kidding themselves. You know, the more I watched it. I'm thinking how to Jacksonville go to practice and watch Blake and watch Cody compete, and thank you know. We're okay. We're okay quarterback. Everything's going to be fi. Like, how do they do that? Like Kessler is, you know, for lack of a better Turner journeyman. I mean, and you know, when you don't have a good backup. It's really bad. But I mean, I've never seen. We've had to ninety yard runs in the last two games that have been on national television. You don't see ninety yard runs ever. I mean in Cleveland and ninety four when Nick Sabin was the defense Corday the longest run we gave up that season was twenty four yards. That's when you know, you're a good defense. When you don't give up long runs, you safeties closed the Luther level. The defense can stop big place. We've seen to ninety runs in the last two weeks. I mean, it's really by teams that are supposed to be good defensively. Jacksonville. And yet they give up ninety are runs. At least Henry had had one hundred yard game. I mean poor Adrian Peterson. He didn't even get to one hundred after getting ninety yards and you bring up the ninety nine yard touchdown. Obviously. That was the big highlight in this game in tied the longest wrong running franchise history. Obviously also tied the longest run in NFL history. And after the game, they they spoke to Derrick Henry Aaron Andrews did, and, you know, talk to them about a door said he said Dorsett was a guy that he'd worked out with guy that he really looked up to. But I think the interesting part to me Lombardi just watching that run a couple times back was it was reminiscent of Marcell marshawn Lynch a lot of people have made that a correlation between the two things. But I think the most impressive part was Dorsett was a fast guy. You know, he could outrun once he gets a pass the second level. He's pretty much. I it's a foot race to the you know to the end zone at that point. But Derrick Henry he's stiff arming throwing guys out of the way. And one of those guys at the end was miles Jack who we both know is one of the best players. I mean, one of the best defensive players especially in the AFC in one of the best fence players over the past couple of seasons. And he throws him down at the end and just keeps going. I mean, what do you have to say for Henry because he he said that they were focused, and you could tell he was playing with a different level of juice on this Thursday night game. I think in December. I think it's you know, tackling as bad early in the season. And then it gets a little better. I think as the season whereas on tackling becomes worse, especially with teams that don't work on it. I didn't think miles Jack is played near to the level that he did last year. I mean, he missed some tackles on some inside Ron, and you know, that whole Jacksonville defense to me it's going to be interesting off season for Doug Marrone, and Tom Coughlin and the great Dave Colwell to see what they decide to come up with in terms of how they evaluate this team. Because you know, like I've said before this is they've had one good year. They won ten games. And now they're going to have another top five top six pick which has been consistent over the last six years other than one season. It's going to be interesting how they fix this defense. They change today. Change defense corps days. They've already changed offense coordinator that didn't work. I mean, they can't get the running game going and fairness to them their offensive line is so beat up. So I mean this off season for Jacksonville is going to be..

"Bets. Time farm, baby. Thank. Not a lot of blood last week. But the Russian was cut. Princeton profs did suffer his first loss. Dried to go against what I suggested would be high scoring game on Sunday night and to no avail. Yeah. He already gave me a pick for for this on the Sunday night game. But yeah, he's he was defeated cer-. Certainly I think it will really kill it was that last touchdown drive by Pittsburgh at the end of the first half. They got the ball back with not a whole lot of time left. They went about ninety yards. Threw a touchdown pass. When it come back though for the chargers. Oh, yeah. Of winning really talk about it in the first part of the show. We that was one of the best games of the weekend. We somehow I glossed over but nice comeback for the chargers. Pittsburgh had been on a roll. The reason I liked the Steelers that they just they opened up the offense and go beat down mode. Every time off a loss. Six straight covers off a loss. Dating back to last year in in typically, high scoring games which ended up being now, I hedge data my bet and halftime took the under because I thought the Steelers would go conservative, which they did scoreless. Third quarter. Only scored one more touchdown the rest of the way. But I did not anticipate the chargers getting a punt return for touchdown. And also the offense all of a sudden waking. Yup. And how many times do we see that the modern NFL where teams go conservative, and it has costing them a game. How many times these coaches need to learn that lesson? It's crazy in Warren sharp did a fantastic job. Breaking down play calling in the first half. Or the second half runs on first down in the second half are just Dr killers. And that's all the Steelers did that's why they had such short possessions. And he also profiled a linebacker her covering Keenan Allen, which shockingly did not prove successful for Pittsburgh. I doubt it. And you know, if your offense is moving the ball it will just keep right on scoring like why I don't understand. Why teams when their offense is playing so effective? The Steelers offense was moving the ball up and down the field in that first half. Why didn't they just keep doing exactly what they were doing? Himselves a win on you dictate doesn't make sense tempo. But you can still pick call pass plays, of course. And it's exactly what the other team wants you to do. Believe me the loud, the Steeler or the chargers didn't want the Steelers just keep on doing what they were doing keep on throwing the ball all over the field. They wanted them to go conservative. They did. And it was a big reason why the chargers won that game. So in terms of the bonanza I lost the juice in that game. So that was two grand on each side. So it's two hundred bucks. And then I took a middle shot with the dolphins. And I lost. I won the hedge. But lost the original back because I took five and a half when we take the Bod, but actually close three and a half. So I won the pick in my column and because it landed four, but I lost some some juice lost around eleven twelve hundred dollars. I'll do the math. But how about yourself you lost? The prince of props was at minus one ten believe. Yeah. It was a team total. It wouldn't have been anything other than minus one ten and then. My brownies dumping tar Nichols. So all right. How many times can I go to the well with the Cleveland Browns? Well, I think you're going to keep doing it. That's just my hunch. But. I'd like to I really I really liked that team..

"You know, Elliott's you soc strong. He's hard to tackle one on one. He has he has enough speed that he can get to the edge, and he can create big plays. But he so strong in they're not very complicated in run game. They don't need to be sort of had him the ball on even if there's an extra guy he can run through or or make a mess. He's also really increases load as his career's gone on in the passing game. Also, he's dangerous screen runner. You have to count for him. He's he's obviously wanted to best backs in league. And if we're going to come out with a win we're gonna have to get him stopped watts to weed out under Stephen. Understatement without getting gives her game plan for Sunday. But what goes into your thinking game planning in terms of how much you argues it now. You know? I mean it depends on offense. It depends on the you know, we we had some Bush called in that game. And there was protections that you know, sorta got us out of him or quarterback took a time out on a couple of them. You know, I think we might have looked like three times in the last two weeks one of which was a ninety yard touchdown run. And another one was like a fifty yard pass. So you try to manage the game. And you try to sort of find a formula for what you're what you're best at that week. Honestly, that's sort of been a challenge for us sort of these last half a dozen games or so because tickling the back home we've had different cast almost every single week. And so you start getting feels play caller. Okay. This is what we can execute. And this is what's good for our matchup matchups. You have another injury in the next week. It's a little bit different than you sort of start over again trying to find that. But that's sort of where we are right now. I think the other part that goes into that is our D line has done a good job of of pressuring. They've done a good job of getting pressure without blitzing. And when you can do that, it really doesn't make a lot of sense to subject. Checked your secondary to more. You know, more one on ones than a heavier load. When the when those guys he wanted against we put the most in was Jacksonville than wanna reasons we blitz. A lot was the field was bad. And we really could generate our four man pass rush away. We normally do he's games different every every every opponents different. And then obviously forced this year. You know, the guys were playing with than different. So just gotta find find a formula tweak. What we did last week might not be what we do this week. Confidence of the team particular play downs bag daydream player. Say this about for Seoul, throwback any made that great play. I had a ton of space out in that affected. Individuals players now, I mean, I think that it does go both ways the more plays. You make the more confidence. You haven't probably the freer you play when you're on field. That was a big play for us. You know, they I I don't know that would have gone the distance. I mean, you look at the plate. We have guys that you know, when he threw a back their comment, but it was probably going to be a pretty good chunk of gain. Right there. Russell did his job on that play. He's last line of defense and was able to able to get again, a tough back and also had defeat dumb, Trent Williams who's obviously wanted vest blockers. That was a huge play force at a critical point at game able to get that keep that drive live and squirrel. Sudden it's one score game. So obviously that was a a big play. He can build off of that. Wait, a Cowboys playoff games. You know, they've they've they've sort or not. One trick pony again. Good production out of their quarterback the quarterback as as taken out a proactive stance when it comes to scrambling for first nouns thanksgiving game the New Orleans game..

"Steve rival Seahawks. Broadcasting Bobby Wagner is ninety yard pick six but the finishing touches on the dominant effort by the Seahawks cruise past the Niners forty three sixteen at the clink. Russell Wilson threw four touchdowns without a picks. Yeah. Crews despite surrounding four hundred surrendering four hundred fifty two yards of total offense, I presume a lot of that garbage time. Mark the Seahawks. Look as dangerous as any team in the wild card race, right, right? For all the teams. I'm sure there's some people that get wildly annoyed that it seems like I'm knocked down every team we discuss left, and right, but there's only like five or six you really buy into the Seahawks, though are climbing into that world where I wouldn't wanna play them down the stretch. And they have who is it next week. Let's take they have Minnesota at home. That's the game. I think Minnesota is in hot water with that one Seattle is playing just so well right now, and I don't know what to take too much of this affair on the fact that they dropped an f. Pick bomb on a niner's team that really is directionless completely in the whole Nick Mullins thing was very nice evening on television a couple of weeks ago traded while they right is utterly over at this point. They they could not get out of their own way with a couple really bad. They had a punt return fumble when they were up thirteen when they were down thirteen nothing. And then they proceed to have a Malcolm Smith helmet hit on Wilson. They have a at the goal line and the Seahawks. Go twenty nothing. There's still more than half the game left, and you know, it's over and you knew it was over about ten minutes in and I feel a little bit for for college Shanahan because twenty of twenty eight games that he's coached have been with total no-name ham and Eggers under center, you know, the Jimmy G energy injury, obviously. But it's like all of last season. And then all of last this season. He's trying to maximize these nobodies, and they're really just a loss team right now you're talking about the the number one pick. They are absolutely in contention for that doing ten with the raiders the worst record in the league. I mean Wagner at a picture. Six sack of force fumble a fumble recovery a couple tackles for loss a couple of passes defense. He is insane. I mean, he Aaron Donald is going to win defensive player of the year. But I feel like Tony Dundee's probably already voted for Bobby. You get these magnetic if we're gonna get an MVP three years ago. He's getting the vote from Dungy this year. So the Seahawks keep ticking off wins. They beat the Packers. The Panthers the forty Niners in my mind in the NFC. They have during that time. You move ahead of the Vikings the Panthers the Redskins the eagles all those teams in the pecking order, and now you'd be surprised if they don't make the playoffs, and they should be the favorite from the number five five seed right now. And yeah, there's no reason to think the loser. You're after that Vikings game. They do they do have the chiefs. But you also have another forty Niners contest and the cardinals. Yeah. You close out the year with the cardinals. When some other teams have tougher competition in week seventeen. That's a big boost for the Seahawks. I mean the game was over in. Russell Wilson had three touchdowns on four completions. That's like Brian Schottenheimer nirvana, right? There is he is he getting like. You don't shave you. It's like Marty Schottenheimer is vision of football back. I mean in this room, and maybe not you Greg. You did pretty nice job with the Seahawks this year. But a lot of people had a lot of fun at the expense of the Seahawks and the direction of the team including the hiring of shoddy who does not have a great track record in this league. But they are proving people wrong, but one thing and I should say this. He carries a good coach out of respect for the former team of Seattle could win the rest of their games this year, and they still would not win the NFC west because the Rams clinched that title for the second straight year with their win today. It's impressive..

"So that's good. We'll just keep rolling with that. And you can get the good deals on that. Like you said. So you said you pay no attention yesterday to Chicago and Detroit. I don't blame him. You didn't miss a lot a pick six for Eddie Jackson broke a tie bears. Win the rating three good story. Great story. Good defense. I don't think they have enough offense to really do damage compete with the Rams and saints. But maybe I'm wrong. But then we had the Cowboys beating Washington for their third straight win moving into a tie for first in the NFC east and by virtue of a better division record. Dallas does currently own first place in the east Colt McCoy made his first start in four years started for the Redskins because of the Alex Smith leg injury through a couple of touchdowns threw three picks. But as I'm watching that happen. I'm thinking to myself, what must Jon Gruden and raider. GM? Reggie McKenzie be thinking right now because in his fourth game as a cowboy since the trade when Oakland thought he just wasn't giving us what we need a number one pick to give us Amari Cooper goes for a hundred and eighty yards receiving a forty yard touchdown and a ninety yard touchdown. Yeah. We posed this question on sportscenter. Matt asked me, Matt Barry, my co host asked me essentially with Amari kind of doing what he what he did yesterday because it has been a bit of a slow tenure for Amari in Dallas. He had a couple of weeks that weren't you know, fantastic his coming out party kind of happened yesterday. But is it say more about Dak Prescott in his abilities are less about Derek Carr and his abilities? I just think that you know, if you're the raiders like it's just one lump that you've taken after another. You're just watching everyone that you decided to to auction off in a fire sale to really well. And I think that sometimes and are, you know, this sometimes it's not even necessarily about talent is just a change of environment. It's needed and it's necessary. There's been a. History and a tradition of losing an Oakland. They had that one year that they look like they're gonna do something. And then Derek Carr breaks his leg. And I think that just for all parties involved. It was one of those things. Whereas like, let's just do a reset at the time. It seemed like Oakland got one over on Dallas. You know, I think what at Amari have like a couple of hundred yards in the season. When he was traded. They gave up the first round pick a day. Everyone's thinking like why would you do something like that? And it seems to have at the very least paid off and also prevented Jason Garrett from getting fired because his seat was as hot as they come until this move happened. You've gotta feel now he's back in the safe zone. Right. I mean, I I don't know how he's uh with Jerry Jones unit. First of all, I don't know how GARRETT'S lasted as long as he has with his with as many five hundred seasons as he's had. I have no idea what he has on Jerry Jones to still be the Dallas Cowboys head coach. But suddenly, it's a team with some life. We know Ezekiel Elliott's. Done. We know the offense goes as the offense of line goes in as the run game goes, but you've got to think that Garrett is safe. And by the way, let me say one thing about Amari. You know, he made deck look really good because on the ninety yard touchdown. There are three Redskins that have surrounded him. And he puts on one little spin move breaks one tackle, and it's Audio's. So if that stopped for a gain of fifteen maybe we have a different opinion about that Prescott today and the Cowboys. But anyways, I you've gotta think if Garrett was safe before. Now they've won three in a row..

"Cowboy Steve Nate cover your years because yesterday the Cowboys took over the top spot in the NFC east. Thanks to monster performances from big big three Dallas as an absolutely balling since acquiring Cooper from the raiders. And now some are wondering whether the combo of Daggs Zeke, and Amari should be compared to the original triplets of Emma, Troy, and Michael Dako for nearly three hundred yards and two TD Zeke rush for one hundred twenty one yards and a touchdown while Amari added eight catches one hundred and eighty yards and two touchdowns including a ninety yard catch and run. Louis Riddick still here with Steven A. I'm coming to you since this is your team. Cowboys triplets for real because they look for real please ask them if they're if they're equipment chance to be a and. So I think they are urban and Michael Smith. Well, Steve day. I want to talk about this. I will I won't won't even answer that second question. I just don't feel like being that annoyed this morning. I'm looking forward to buy thanksgiving weekend. And you know what? And it's really it would really be an insult to Aikman, and and Mike and Mike urban and Emmett Smith, I mean, we have to Kate taking the consideration. Could you win a playoff game police, which these guys obviously have not done? I will tell you that Amari Cooper can ball. But but to compare him to Michael Irvin. Listen, he's got talent. There is no question about it. I think that that he's worth the first round pick that the Oakland Raiders that the Dallas Cowboys gave up to get him from Jon Gruden open rates, by the way, Jon Gruden got some explaining to do Khalil Mack. And now Amari Cooper, he's got some explaining to do with what he's giving away. But I would say in response to all of that is the jury is still out on Prescott. I mean, we know what Ezekiel Elliott is. You can look at them and spent that you can sit up there and say Ezekiel Elliott can be somebody that can see it that running. Attack for years to come because he's a stud Amari Cooper somebody. I believe in. And he's got the requisite skill is. He the vocal leader that Michael Irvin. Was he's the galvanizing force that elevates the play of not just himself, but people around him because of who he is. And we keep in mind Michael Irvin. You'll find very very few people in NFL history to all who are known to have worked harder at the craft then Michael Irvin. This guy was special man. He's a hall of fame for reason. And it wasn't just as talent. It was his work ethic and commitment to excellence he was the guy that went to Jimmy Johnson said you wanna win get rid of this do this do this do that was highlight. And all the guys who didn't want it bad enough. When Jimmy Johnson I arrived for the Cowboys. That's who Michael Irvin is he's that special Amari Cooper is not that kind of guy. He's a quiet guy. He goes out the performance he puts in the work..

"I was like, well, let me go back and let me look at week ten because you know, when you're doing games, Mike, you don't get to go through every game. Like I used to go through every single game. So you get a better sense of what's going on league. And you're watching highlights and stuff. So I went back and yesterday on Monday, I watch games and then yesterday in my hotel room in New York City. I watched seven games all that. Did was sit there from noon until I went to bed at ten just did nothing, but watch games. And so anyhow I'm watching because I was intrigued how to Tennessee pull this off this victory off. And I'm watching what dean pees did to Tom Brady. And it was amazing. I thing is when you watch Tom Brady at the end of the day. What always ends up happy? The running back has like fourteen targets nine catches one hundred yards or ninety yards and they're just chain movers. Right in the passing game. The extended run game as offense coordinator like to call it. So the very first play the game and they fly they'd throw one out to the flat in the Tennessee titans. Roll up in like a cover to the corner comes off from about eight yards. The guy catches it and just gets his lips popped by the corner. I'm me you wanna talk about aggressive just rolling up there. And absolutely. I mean, absolutely stymying somebody is soon as they touched the ball. So there was a tone set. You're not going to get the cheap yards. Like, the patriots are always sitting it at second down and four as the flip went out on the flat to the running back, and whether they weren't covered to whether they were in, you know, in some type of cover three where you've got a curl flat defender those curl flat defenders absolutely punished the run. Backs in the flat. I mean, Mike punish them. And so that was the first thing that was decidedly different about the way dean peas coordinates a defense to face Tom Brady, and then constant pressure like just constantly bringing blitz constantly pressuring Tom Brady getting him off his spot. I mean, he was like you don't usually see Tom Brady rattled. But he was rattled. I mean, dirt and balls just throw them balls away taking sacks. I mean, they were all over him. And they couldn't consistently beat man to man coverage. They couldn't consistently get their receivers wide open. They really miss gronkowski. They MRs health. They miss him being a matchup guy. But there was constant pressure changing up defenses a lot of man to man coverage. And basically said we're gonna hit Tom Brady. You know, it reminded me Mike of watching the AFC championship game in. Denver all those years ago. When Denver went on to win Super Bowl. Fifty. It reminded me of vac game where they just continued to pepper Brady on a consistent basis. And essentially say listen to one thing you're not going to do is. You're not going to sit back there and time and because apart. You know, here's my other theory, though, about what what we saw last week. It's a long season these guys they know how long the year is also know they got a soft schedule coming up. And I think sometimes you see this with Brady that there are there games where he just he knows that the team he's playing against his revved up that article that they're coming to punch them in the mouth. And I think he just I'm not saying he he he tanks the game. But I think he's alter careful it's all about living to fight another day. And I think those are the games that you feel like he feels the rush. And yet if if it was a playoff game same exact situation. I think you see him standing there. I think you see him take some hits to deliver passes. But I think he's every once in a while I think he plays a long view game. And that was a long view game. Where it's like, you know, what it's just not worth it. I'm not going to get hit and. That's why you see the kind of performance that he has. I'm not discounting peas, and I'm not discounting the effect that that these can have where I just think that that was one of those games. It's a long season. You're on the road. You're playing a team that's fired up all kinds of former patriot connections on that other side in Tennessee..

He only threw for one hundred ninety yards and they won that in Minnesota. So so it could be you know, really good in in. No real interesting story here. I got to do an hour sit down with him once at Super Bowl. And of all the weird funny. Crazy stuff I've done in my life and career. That's right up there. He is as classy and engaging and charismatic as any superstar I've ever been around. So shouts drew Brees. Okay. So that's that's the ram story. They've traded for Dante Fowler, and they're going into New Orleans to try and beat the saints on Sunday in a game that could be a preview of the NFC championship game. Let's say using who who do you think in in the NFC poses the biggest threat to the Rams get into the Super Bowl? I. Think Minnesota again per potentially they played them so tough in that epoch game to better than Minnesota. I think they are. But I don't know. I think besides the asking about as far as the Rams go. I mean the Vikings Vikings are a tough team and they got real close last year. And I know they beat them this year. But that was a great game. The saints beat the Vikings. Yeah. Yeah. I for some reason, I know they started super slow out of the gate. I like to move the eagles made today. Now, they're trading for golden Tate, though, the Carolina Panthers. I've watched them a lot this year for some reason the way they run the football. That's where I was going to. I think Carolina's a pretty good team. Yeah. Tribune chain in the AFC. Is it really the patriots? Again, they really the team to beat the chiefs good mass. They don't have the chiefs are video game. And but until you go and do it in Foxborough. But if they have to go to Arrowhead if Marcel used to say that he remembers playing a game there where the chiefs rain it back for a touchdown to start the game. And no lie. He saw sound. He saw sound waves. It was so loud. And crazy. I've heard this from a bunch got it looks like the building is moving because it's so loud if the patriots have to go into aero- head I could see that that being difficult, but. Yeah. I get back to the LeBron. You had it's you have a chance to see LeBron James play every single night you, and I have not talked in a couple of weeks. You saw me at the spit game. We haven't really talked about that. But I want to hear your I sort of like two weeks in the world of LeBron where you're at and fair enough. We'll do it next. I'm not as getting on the phone. You guys are probably best friends. You don't have. We're working on getting maverick on the show. Because have you seen the trailer for shut up and dribbling worked on the movie? I was stored. "I'm still thinking about that Brown's in eagles preseason game on Thursday. Absolutely terrible. Edgy look. We could all take it show pill for a sec, and you look actually played well, third preseason game. Again, the most important preseason game went eight of ten ninety yards. One touchdown until the ball four times ran for twenty seven yards. I told you guys, Angela was fine. Then again, it is preseason. So I was talking last week about how this preseason. So you can't expect them to be goodness. I two games. But I mean, this was an improvement here. He's only gonna get better. I like what Angela brings to the table. I think I'm higher on NGO than most. I think he's got the potential to be an all time, great type player, but the guy's got to stay healthy. He's gotta stay on the field. I think the colts did better this past off season to get them. Offense of line help is just the only problem is you got wide receiver and then not too much talent around you. I mean, they might head into week one with Christine, Michael being their starting running back. That's not necessarily a great thing. And who knows maybe this is the year that Christine, Michael actually proves what everyone's been saying about him. I mean, that's basically how he stuck around the league for six years. But like I said, you played well, he's taken off the ball to a couple of hits and look. Good said his shoulder felt fine like he was really enthusiastic about his performance after the game. Like the kind of enthusiasm where you get to all? Yeah, this guy is fine. His shoulders not hurt or anything like that. So. I mean of Andrew luck. Let's say that end you look is back. Than the AFC south has a real problem. Why. Because this guy can't take a team to the playoffs on his, oh, we've seen it. I mean, they went went to and fourteen the year before he got drafted. And then they go, eleven five. The next season come on that was on accident. You think that was because they had a great team the next year. Let's stop right there. I mean, the guy went eleven and five is first three seasons started getting hurt. And you luck is a very good quarterback. Then you'll get Jimmy Garoppolo. He went nine and nineteen against the colts hundred thirty five yards touchdowns no interceptions I'm not sure what to think. Jimmy g. quarterback rating was seventy. One point two. I mean. I think he has any weapons. What do you mean by that is like you got solid players, but just guys who don't really. I mean, Pearson, we know what he is best is behind him. Marquees good. When runs one route. I like Trent Taylor, but it seems that Ritchie James might possibly be overtaken him. Running back, Alfred Morris there, Jerry McKinnon, Matt Breda on his feel more comfortable forty or starting Alfred Morrison McKinnon and I, they probably can't do that given all the money. They got McKinnon, but our main, I think Moore's is the safer bet there. One guy's been a starter, his entire career. The radio one's been a backup and got was got cut by the team that drafted him so they could draft another rigi winning back. I mean, what does that tell you there. Well enough, but we'll see what ends up happening. Like I said, Andrew lucked played well played while also. I'll always believe that per set could be as good starting quarterback in the league of he's on the right tape. I mean, what? Seven at thirteen hundred twenty yards there. The receivers, Eric Hebron, had five catches for fifty four yards in touchdown. TY had to catch for seventeen yards. So it'll be interesting to see where this team looks like. A engine is back to being the Angelique. We saw started out his career, but we gotta wait for that. So we're going to wrap it up here. Next we'll be talking about anything else going on in the world of football. So stay tuned and we'll be right back..

"Ben Rothlisberger made his preseason debut over the weekend. Look sharp through for hundred and fourteen yards and touchdown against the Tennessee titans Cici. Would you make a big? Ben's performance was great performance. He moved the ball around. You could see sometime Tennessee defense lose trying to take away his primary guy. So man, he went over the field not trying to force the ball been looked like the Ben that that we have gotten accustomed to seeing big year from Ben Rothlisberger. This guy could be represented AFC with the collection of why receivers that he can throw to should be an exciting season. Knick. Listen, I'm very interested to see what the Steelers offense looks like this year. We know Big Ben and Todd Haley, never really got along great. Big Ben, never really loved him as offense coordinator, even though the team was very successful, big, Ben's imprint is going to be much heavier on this offense. He's going to run more much the offense. He wants then how he has last few years. I mean, if this is any early results slinging around a lot, they obviously don't have lady on bell yet, but he looked right, throw it early in the season. Two ill Bill gets into shape two or three games, and they'll start to mix fifty. Fifty run the pass move onto the colts. Now, Andrew lock at his best game of the preseason completed eight of ten passes for ninety yards and touchdown. See how encouraging MRs performance by lock. This was. His best performance yet. And it's not just because throwing the football and the result of results here we saw him hit e Brian here on a scene pattern to Mendes throw, but his overall timing Jenna, getting the ball out of his hand and also being under duress. He is a freakish athlete, almost the same, measurable Cam Newton, just does it a different way, getting sacked beyond get out of the pocket. Allude to rush. They're all positive signs for the codes. Moving forward for luck week number one, he won't. He shouldn't play week number four. The only non positive sign I would say for lucky is even though they've spent now a bunch of first round picks not offensive line. Even these highlights of quality plays see the pocket getting pushed back quite a bit like us. They draft him Quinton Nelson, and it's way too early. I get it, but they drafted him to be an instant top ten guard in the league and do within a couple years, be approachable or like you don't take guard Martin? No. Like Zach Martin. Exactly. Right. You don't take a guard sixth overall, if you don't think he can be. Martin. So that's something to watch as well. But luck is best game. We've seen from him in almost two years. Adrian Peterson, shines in his debut in Washington, rushing for fifty six yards on eleven attempts, see worship expectations be with Peterson. This was a great performance by Adrian. I think that the staff there Gruden did a good job at you. Watch him on most of his runs, they have a fullback or a tied in. They put him in, I formation. So that's the way agers run since he was a little kid had running the football in Texas, so they've kind of a da- pted to him already..
