"Tony bennett has been singing. Hits in swinging jazz high on for seven decades but for tony now. Those years are a dim memory. Lost in the fog of dementia from alzheimer's he spends much of his time in his new york apartment looking through books old photos. What are these. We met tony and his wife. Susan and june a few weeks before his ninety fifth birthday. Bob hope they sent that for your seventy fifth birthday and in a month and a half. You're going to be ninety five about that. Do you feel ninety five. You don't look at how old they feel. Tony has good moments. But susan has to do most of the talking. She says he. I grew concerned about his memory. Five years ago we came home one night and he said susan having a hard time remembering the names of the musicians then he was playing with who he works with all the time and so is unusual and i said well. Do you want to go see a doctor about it. And he said i do. Did you know right away that it was alzheimer's. Yeah dr guy. Debbie is tony's neurologist. She diagnosed him in two thousand seventeen. Do you know what is happening in. Tony's brain no one really knows. But i know that his hippocampus which is the grand central station memories and the conduit through which we'd retrieve memories as well as lay down. Memories is not working very well. Look at this. Tom was that that's a painting that you did susan. Tony have been together for more than thirty years. She's now his full time caregiver. How much does tony understand about. What's going on around him at any given time. Every day is different. Tony late at night sometimes early in the morning. He's more alert. If i can use that word. So i'll town tone you're gonna be on sixty minutes. He's great. I said you remember that. Show sixty nine. He's like i do but any other given moment he won't know review recognizes. You recognize me. Thank goodness his children. We are blessed in a lot of ways. He's very sweet. He doesn't know he has it. He doesn't know he has alzheimer's what he does know is that he's at home not performing on stage. He'd continued to sing after his diagnosis but the pandemic took him off the road. Susan says it's been hard on him was guidry dovey are doctor. Who said if he wants to sing. Let him sing. Because that's the best thing for him. You know all the meds and all the treatments they do to stimulate your brain for him. There's nothing more stimulating than performing. Tony's oldest son and manager danny bennett came up with the idea of the radio city concerts in august with lady gaga. It'll broadcast on. Cbs later this fall. The pandemic was big. A big thing for me. I ending his career on that end. That.

"Newton's the only quarterback the only rookie quarterback that i can find in the last ten years who's finished higher than qb eight in four point per passing stuff all the qb nine six point on a per game basis. Lamar jackson probably got there. And i think he did. You know what. I can look that up for you because that was what twenty nine hundred nineteen his rookie year. One okay so i will go back to my two thousand nine hundred ninety. Look at look at the whole point of a bold prediction is there are lots of reasons why it can't happen. You know. we're talking about like ninety. Fifth percentile outcome or ninetieth percentile outcome. Something like that but the point for me is to just highlight. How high the upside is. I think for justin fields if he does click you know he's got a legitimate alpha number one wide receiver. He's got what should be a pretty good rushing game especially if he's in there you know helping david montgomery's efficiency with his own rushing ability which i think is an under disgusting. David montgomery And we all think moonies a breakout. Can't it so. I think it's a good situation for him to land in and frankly i thought he should have been number two pick so yeah. There's a bit of confirmation bias in his preseason play but i you know i'll i'll confirm my bias us occasionally. It's certainly not a bad prediction. But because people are spending draft picks on lance and fields. I just think it's worth pointing out that. Even the mobile quarterbacks like jalen hurts and lamar jackson. Lamar jackson was only on pace for twenty touchdowns in his starting. Eleven passing nine rushing with seven interceptions. I don't know how many fumbles he was on pace for. Two thousand five hundred forty six passing yards but almost thirteen hundred rushing yards. I don't know where he would have been. Oh yeah per per game. I had him as qb. Sixteen and four point qb. Twenty two. In in six point. I could be a little off on those numbers. But you know. I think feels have great rushing numbers. I don't think he's going to have great passing numbers Just wanna bring this up. Because people are spending these picks and you're going to use a bench spot on fields and definitely on lance for a while we sh- they might than everybody but it's rare that a rookie quarterback really blows us away. Yeah i'm lower on lands. I'm less much less likely to draft him. I don't know if i've drafted him at all outside of two. Qb leagues so. I thought of the rookie quarterback's you actually might have looked the worst in the preseason. There were really high highs. But they're really low lows for trae lance. I don't think he's quite ready yet. All right dave your first bowl prediction your second one. Actually the first one was about ty boyd asking you where he's from jerry. Judy was the name you gave me. And the bold prediction assigned was that bold prediction. Jerry judy has a middle name. That also starts with the letter. J jackson jerry jackson. Judy that's correct. Well done. But that's not a prediction. That's a fact here's a prediction jerry. Judy will not finish as top. Twelve fantasy receiver..

"Have a podcast together. I like how you're thinking you're doing a good job so far so keep it up. I know this is. This is rough subject matter to get through. So oh thank you and actually sharon. Speaking of deviations two thousand seven saw something unusual of the four women that were murdered that year to had very striking differences from the other to the remains of both theresa bun and hazel maryanne. Lewis were found a day apart from each other on opposite ends of washington park which is a south side park located in chicago theresa was found on november thirteenth hazel lewis on november fourteenth. Both women had been strangled. There remain stuffed and garbage cans and the cans lit on fire. So for that one. I'm sorry i. I feel like there's no way that there wasn't like one person who did both of those murders but to your point could be possible that those murders were not part of the other groups. We're not really sure or the other possibility is that it was but left away too much. Dna evidence so decided. Just burn the evidence completely. That's a very very good point. The killings continued as years advanced. But the number of murders per year started to lull until the year of two thousand fourteen when they stopped completely and there are thoughts about this. Which again i'll get to. Unfortunately in two thousand seventeen the strangulation started again. Diamond turner's body was found. In a garbage can march third. She was fixated and had blunt force trauma. Now remember diamond. Remember her name. She may turn up again in this story. That on june twenty seconds catherine seder field buchanan was found strangled in a parkway. The four women murdered in two thousand eighteen are also seemingly considered the last in this pattern of strangulations. Two thousand eighteen was also the year that everything changed and it starts appropriately enough for this show with our final girl. As it were considered the final victim of the chicago strangler rayo rene holyfield aged thirty four was found by a streets and sanitation employees on monday september tenth. Two thousand eighteen. Her body was badly decomposed and was found in a trash can in get this sharon an alley off ninety fifth street not far from trinity united church of christ so kind of where ninety fifth street in the dan ryan. Meet up about that area for any of you in chicago. Who might know that but for reference we do not far from where we grow up right. Clause of death was possible strangulation and or as fixation And yes the police asked around came up with nothing. But a few months after holyfield was found pam zach and investigative reporter with. Cbs news decided to revisit. The details of holyfield's case and she thought there might be a bigger picture and decided to report on it so two thousand and one it took till two thousand eighteen before somebody was like these women have been going missing. We should say something about this. Unbelievable rail holyfield was very very close to her cousin. Ricardo holyfield who called rayo his big sister and remember fondly. The following is from the chicago reader. Sharon would you like to read this worse. Sure as little kids real was the one who made peanut butter and jelly on crackers for him at their grandmother's inglewood house in their teens. He used to tag along with rio when she competed in rap battles..

"Contenders. Yeah it's almost contingent on saturday because you know where you're going to get out of ige wine. If sally wayne has opportunities in the box more often he's going to finish them plasma. We still have something in those legs. But the one who's really not shown us that level is sort of at least this season and he's probably been the biggest question mark fulfilled so if he can change he's been this season maybe outside chance but man you're nothing is one in august inner. Miami aren't the bad then. Who is because they've been bad for like seventy five percent of shows. Let's see it is la fcc you love this. Who lost san jose to one over the weekend. That is now five in a row without a win for carlos. Vela bob bradley and company hurt. Do still have faith in la se earlier in the season. We could write it off. They don't have carlos davila. Well now they got those back and things have not exactly turned around now but it's not just that they haven't exactly turned around. It's how they've not exactly turned around and who they're losing to a dropping points to you. Drop points vancouver. Not a very good team san jose not a very good team. You let portland on the road. I mean steel points for the ninety third minute you let minnesota at home in the ninety fifth minute savvy. You were there still points from you at the bank of california. It's the way you're losing these points. It's the way you're performing at the beginning of the season. You could've said god knows diego rossi. No not on the field you can say. Brian rhodesia's his situation. What it's one after the other and usually when this no-balls into this effect something's going on now. Do they think they're smarter than they are. We're just need to move the pieces year. Which do that we're sending players away. What's going on. I don't know but something's going on in los angeles and it's not the galaxy we're talking about l. Afc and that's surprising. Little too much movement when it comes to this roster midseason for me to be really comfortable and say i've got faith in l. Afc move corey bear. They knew mark. Anthony k those two. I mean certainly with k. A really really big piece of kind of who they are in in the past. Maybe they're trying to get in the goalkeeper position. The goalkeeper's always been an issue. Eddie cigarettes out for the season now with an acl. That doesn't exactly help them in a position of intense need indefens- sebastian to beyond as a player that probably going to bring in from new york city. Sc he could maybe be a replacement for death on that back line but the player we really have to wait on is the player. They're going to bring it on. Tam money from columbia. Christiaan around can't pretend to know too much about him. He's played from your nadia. But he's the guy hurt if he hits and hits quick then i think l. Afc could save this season. I think that's just a huge ask per player.

"T. I don't think i could see a scenario unless there's an injury. Obviously where robinson is working a lot in the passing game. Seems like that's what they really want from but is there a scenario where travesty is working a lot in the running game. And he's a three down back. Dave yes that would happen if james robinson struggles as the traditional running back. Think back to that saints offense. When mark ingram was there and ingram was a player that was spry. And you know under the age of thirty. He was the traditional running back. He was capable of catching passes. They didn't call on him to do much of that. But alvin kamara could catch passes and get out and space and being back and i think that that's what. Et can end up. Being then has more. I think it's more likely that ea eats into robinson's work. The robinson eats into etienne's work. I think the only way that the latter happens is a and gets hurt. But i think. I'm starting to warm up to robinson more and more. I said it last week. Maybe the week before. But he's starting to slowly move back into my rankings. And by the time we get to the middle of august he might end up being a low end number two running back for me wind. That's okay he can certainly come through for touchdowns and maybe he does catch one or two passes per game to help pad those numbers. I was shocked to see james robinson's twenty-fourth in running back. Adp since the nfl draft se. I figured he would have tumbled glad. He's there one thing that i think is worth keeping in mind is that if katina's tony had been there urban meyer. Said he would've taken him instead of tragedy yet. That was the guy they wanted. And so you know. Obviously i don't think that means they're going to use travesty t and like they would have used various tony but i think that shows that they were looking for a playmaker on offense. They weren't necessarily looking for. We need our james robinson replacement. And so. I think you're gonna see travis. Utn like you said. Moore's the the alvin kamara type of player splitting out wide in the backfield. Next to james robinson. I don't think that there's necessarily not room for both of them. I don't necessarily think both should be arbutus. Which is where. They're being drafted right now. But i think there's room for both of them to succeed seven and a half carries per game for kamera his rookie year wouldn't surprise me in the least. If that's what we saw for not an overall in twenty twenty one it could be his first month could be five carries per game and then it kind of balloons. The season goes on a little bit more. Let me ask you what's better value. Travesty t and forty eighth overall last pick around four or james robinson ninety fifth overall that steepened around eight. Yeah yeah. I think i think the safer bet is robinson at the adp. That's that is if it's not pr it's no question. It's robinson all right and the threesome emails. We'll do more backfield battles on fantasy football today in five your emails and fantasy football ed. Cbs dot com. That's the letter is fantasy football at..

"That stuff all right it's mojo in the morning show. It was a great reminder that i was supposed to get in shape before summer this is mojo in the morning. Mike has got a beef with me. And i want to know what this beef is. All about mike okay. So i am a giant nerd. And i go back and listen to our podcast all the time like all the time and i usually critique myself that's the whole point of it is to see what i could do better blah blah blah blah. So i hear the part where we were told me and i forget what we were talking about what it had something to do with you calling me and how i sound when i answered the auto it was the topic about Do you have a person you have people in your phone you put on is this. Do not answer. Oh yeah yeah yeah and so and you said that i answered the phone like i'm a superfan when you call my phone Let me see. can i explain. Well hold on hold on for. There's a few. There are many things in that moment. I think i made a stupid joke and we moved down from it and it was whatever but i always go back to those moments go. No this is what. I should have fixed the narrative that was said there or just said what what it really was rather than make a stupid joke and then we move on. Sometimes a joke is funny. Like if i'm over critiquing myself. Sometimes the super joke is funny. Sometimes it needs to be better explained. And i'm not like you're a great act. You're you're you're setting me up now. You're very very talented ahead. Say what you wanna say. And i know there are times where i sit there quiet and just like watch what you're doing because i genuinely that's how i learned like i'm watching what you do. I'm i not to get your head any bigger whatever. But you're you're a little good at what you do and i want you. Okay go ahead now. what are you gonna say. I'm about about superfan man. You're you're you're cool guy but like you also have called me maybe a handful of times it so when you call them like oh cool. Joe's calling me sweet. Let's let's hi. hi. I'm surprised that you call what i meant by that. Is that when i do call you. it is. It's exciting for me. Because when i call you you do sound like excited that i called and you made it sound like. I was creepy listener. Who like hey calm yeah well. Today's morning show demoted you. Now i did to superfan. I don't get your all of you. Guys are just really good people. I really like you all i do. I genuinely do. But i am not. I am not a super fan in the slightest. I think you're very very talented. And i i like to Listen and ask a lot of questions. In fact when i do get excited to talk to you. It's mostly because you don't ever call as much as i hear you call everybody else. You do not call me that much. And so i'm genuinely like oh cool because i think we relate to. You have gone through in this. I in like with your family. That i'm like. Oh my like we have some things to talk about like i would love to see I love to get your advice on that stuff and then from a career standpoint. Like i wish i had you in my life like ten years ago to ask all these questions and now i'm like i want to ask him a million questions and i know you're bombarded with with phone calls as it is calling me right now. Aren't you never caused me. Be mike hi. Hey it's good to talk to you how are you. Hey just wanted to say how you doing good. I'm great. it's good to hear from you. What's up you're the ninety fifth caller. Congratulations now mike. That's very sweet of you. I i appreciate you for saying that. Whatever mad because you made me seem like there are times to where i go back and listen. I'm like man. He may sound like somebody really made. Me sound like a weirdo. Ever correct it. It's funny because you guys have opposite reactions. When mo jo calls mike he gets so excited like we're going to put him in charge of the radio station like mike. This is the big day. You're not the boss like he's so this call. I've been waiting for if you call megan. She thinks she's being fired immediately. She gets nervous. Her hands are sweaty. she won't answer. And when you call me. What do i always say what i pick up what. She's always always so friendly. It's probably very refreshing. You could allegation in my life. I call my because he always gives me validation. And i appreciate that and i need you to mike. Well that's not the way you made. It sound. the way he made it sound was. Was this weirdo. Who's like sitting outside your house a professional job. Joe i just wanna be your best friend. Utah coffee armoire. Whatever back to you. It's shrine to it every night. Thank you joe. His shannon teams let more fans into the stands. We're seeing some bad behavior. At nba games was a big story over the holiday weekend. A fan was tackled after running onto the court during the playoff game between the washington. Wizards and aubrey knight. Yeah the players were heading toward washington's basket in the third quarter of the home team's victory in game four of the eastern conference first round series when the game was halted because of this dude who jumped as if pretending to try to dunk a security guard grabbed him down the baseline as seventy six or center. Dwight howard stood nearby. The fan was scored away easing by the way i was so quick to get on top of him and and tackle thing they should. They should give that man. Rays we've been in our homes for you re forgot how to behavioral gas. That incident comes after washington guard. Russell westbrook had popcorn dumped on him as he walked to the locker room after getting injured in game two at philly on sunday in the celtics net series brooklyn guard. Kyrie irving was nearly hit by a bottle thrown from the stands game in boston abortion. That sports is come to kind of crossroads where you see in a lot of old ways. Come up this. Been part of like that. There's been part of that. Didn't that way history in terms of entertainment performers sports for a long period of time just underlying racism industry people like. They're in humans oop throwing stuff at people saying things you know. There's a certain point where it gets to be too much so i called it out. I just wanted to keep his shooting basketball and deceive that people feel very entitled out here. You know they pay for the tickets. Great grateful that coming in to watch Great performance but this is not at the theater. We're not tomatoes in other random stuff at the people that are performing it's just too much and a reflection on Us as a whole and you have fans acting like that earlier. Sunday in new york. Never the most infamous situation ever happened here in town with malice in the palace and stuff and that The bottle that was thrown. It changed the way that concessions were run at a lot of events. Although i noticed that that Boston game they went back to putting the caps on the bottles. I did you know that when they serve you. Never they serve you a beverage water bottle. They take the cap off because keeping the cap on makes that bottle more deadly because it can be thrown in the have go the way but that was that was pretty Pretty craziest see that. All these things keep happening. I always wonder sometimes if the reason things start happening in bunches like this is because people start seeing them and they become copycats. "My door will be more mysteriously locked. When i try and get home so i'm going to say that you've very good. That would be my is really sort of watchos. I don't care but just that. Even i realize that that that football is about that kind of competition in about hope. And that these these Groups were founded by work. I mean how can you do that. How can you do what they what they tried to do. I you know i A very smart person. I fall on twitter Jonathan freedland. you might know him Spoke about how. This also kind of illustrates the fact that the government is sort of powerless. Right in the face of this of the of this kind of move what it was tossed in the end. The government didn't have to take that on because the league collapsed itself. And you put your finger on what was wrong with it. Which is guaranteed places for these teams. No matter how badly they did but government could have been tested if they persisted because there were people saying that if you look at the lower and the european competition there's nothing anyone can do these all global companies and what can a mere national government do to stop them doing whatever they like with their product and with their properties and i thought that was going to be a real test politics because the whole nation here was more or less united against this idea. No one disliked it. The government said we are going to do whatever it takes to stop it. If they had tried and failed. My worry was really for the state for democratic politics itself. I that there would be people in this country who would say well. What is the point of voting for government if they cannot even do this with the whole country agrees on something the powerless to do it. So that was what. I felt this why this was an issue that went beyond football. It was really about who you know who owns these things where is does power lie. Is it with nations or is it. With these transnational corporations and this is an issue that you know activists analysts have been talking about in the abstract for years but suddenly you had the great mass of the british population and similarly in spain and in italy who really felt it in their lives and it could have been really fascinating political known as have collapsed on their own behalf but so so much mud spoke about finding silver in the clouds. "I i like it when the author Actually read their own yet always helps. I always find that the author is more engaging than if they just pay somebody else to read it whereas if it's a fantasy novel or science fiction or something. Yeah you might want to voice actor to. Do you want to know what i really hate that this this one they wouldn't let andrew sidled read it himself really doesn't know he tried and they said no. You have to audition for and the heat and pass the audition. Oh man ouch. That's good enough. Frankly not good enough to read it out loud anyway. Back to the topic at hand. So essentially what. All of that means that the quote that i just read about how. It's multiple world religions. Not just christianity Is that again. This is a correlation across multiple countries multiple states multiple religions It's the presence of religion which typically enforces a more archaic hierarchy that results in the wage gap And that's the claim that is made by essentially proven by the study so speaking of the gender wage gap Here's a few fast facts. That i went ahead and looked up just so we can get a baseline These isn't providing to religion. This is just pretending to the gap in general So as cited in the research project by the economic policy institute on lincoln description The gender wage gap exists at all income levels however there is the least disparity at the lowest end of the spectrum. that's the lowest wages with women. Earning ninety two cents on the dollar that a manner ins and the highest disparity at the top with ninety five percent ninety fifth percentile of earners Of women earners excuse me receiving seventy four cents on the dollar That a man earns that is i mean both are unacceptable gaps but that is a huge gap. That is i mean. That's seventy four percent of the wages women. The more they try to succeed the further away. They're going to get a right. Does that send you know. Exactly what without changing the system that we're operating in just continuing to use the same system you know clearly. Isn't the wage gap disparity increases if if a racist considered as well With black and hispanic women making up the lowest Excusing making the lowest amount on the dollar that a man's Meanwhile white women make eighty one cents on the dollar. An asian women actually tend to make ninety cents on the dollar that a manner earns now..

"Now say the main thing is schooling. I don't know why. But if i could talk to any form of government all this other shit they wanna fix the streets. They steady making more things on the highway and making a rail line better for people to commute. That's great but it started with the youth in kids in school them. If that's everything come from a lotta ignorant. People are ignorant because of choices because they probably did obtain enough information in school. You know what i'm saying like before. Mother bless her soul. She got me out of the garage. We was ten five still grew up. I would be having the same mentality in doing the same things that people that are seated. I remember what the school are stuck in. You know what. I'm saying so i would say school. They don't put enough money into the schools if they do that it would be so much better but she knows easier said than done. I don't know why they don't do it. You know what. I don't understand yet. While in both sides have completely different approaches to education to write like you've got democrats proposing for increased funding for schools and then republicans will push things more like school choice in school vouchers. And things like that. So i i looked it up on it. Looks like chicago's per pupil expenditures. The funding that they have per student is somewhere around sixteen thousand and so illinois right now the the average for all of illinois around fourteen thousand so clearly already. Chicago's like getting decent funding per student for the schools. What do you see as a result of the education budget. Okay so to break down like goes a who plays right. So let's say you might get one prior to car. Go like the pool area. Start putting a lot of money on saturdays. Put hugh senator amazon factory just went. Does alaskan is twits ups and atty got more money in the budget to make that by the so. Let's say you go from now now kuhlman just to go back to the guys you get on e. way i'll say pullman is probably about ten minutes drive from that to the guard. It's not putting money there about all year. We are in the schools. Come to this school and seat but is it a way can balance it out. So exits the still of schools. That are you know what i'm saying. So it's like starting areas okay. We doing is now. I know it's impossible to make every school of a once. I'm not even saying is schools where you will walk in. You see the conditions of its you like how students ebay able to learn here like i went another prime example I would stand on ninety fifth partner for a minute. which is the south side of chicago. while went. it was school called mega abbas. Columbia Sportswear's Gert Boyle Faced Down Sexism and Ageism

"Boyle. Grew. Columbia sportswear into a downfield powerhouse is the third Nar five-part series on the origin stories of iconic companies. We originally aired this episode about boils legacy after she died last. November, let's listen back. She was one tough mother and proud of it. Gert Boyle, the ninety five year old Chairman of Columbia Sportswear died earlier this month since then accolades poured in for boil, she was a formidable funny icon of the outdoor apparel world notorious for her resilience and her toughness qualities that empowered her to guide Columbia from near bankruptcy in the early seventies to what the New York. Times. Now calls the largest outerwear brand in the United States, a three billion dollar business. Gert Boyle was born gertrude lamb from in Germany in one, thousand, nine, hundred, twenty, four, when she was thirteen, the family fled Nazi Germany moving to Portland Oregon there her father lamb from bought the Rosenfeld hat company worried about antisemitism. He changed the name to the Columbia hat company. Columbia evolved from hats to outdoor year including a fishing vest that Gert than a homemaker raising three kids designed. Gertz husband Neil Boyle eventually became CEO of the family business. But in nineteen seventy, the forty seven year, old leader suffered a fatal heart attack. Suddenly Gert found herself at the helm of an eight. Hundred Thousand Dollar Company. She had no idea how Neil had run it nor how she and her son twenty, one year old, Timothy would manage. As CEO of Columbia Gert frequently encountered sexism, but she always had an acerbic comeback as the new. York Times reported Gert recalled that a businessman upon learning. She was the president exclaimed, but you're a woman her answer. You know I noticed that when I got up this morning. Still, the combination of rampant sexism in her inexperience almost killed the company by Nineteen seventy-one. Gert. Agreed to entertain an offer to purchase it. But when the buyer a man offered, only fourteen hundred dollars she custom out and slammed the door in his face wrote Doug Schnitt span who profiled her for outside magazine. Gert said for fourteen hundred dollars. I would just as soon run this business into the ground myself that encounter galvanized Gruden Tim with a combination of unconventional strategies including being the first to use the waterproof fabric. GORTEX. They saved Colombia and set it on its growth path while all of their outdoor industry rivals including the north face in Patagonia. Marketed their wares to elite climbers and adventurers girding in Tim, we're happy to sell their products. Products at department stores at lower prices that strategy shocked the young industry and it worked so too did the Marketing Campaign Gert? Boyle is best known for the one that featured her as just what she was. One tough mother that campaign which ran from nineteen, eighty, four to two, thousand, five depicted gert down to earth mob oil. Now, take no nonsense mother who didn't suffer fools gladly, and who would allow nothing less than perfection A. A string of TV ads showed Gert using her son Tim as a product Tester to prove that they're outerwear was both warm and waterproof. In the first. She had tim dressed in Columbia's famous three layer system. Walk through a car wash. Her favorite one was one in which she drove a Zamboni on a hockey rink. Right over her long suffering son dressed in Columbia gear. Of course, he was lying the ice breathing through a straw. Straw apprentice out of the same era for the boundary peak parker quoted the Middle Aged Gert, saying I've got hot flashes to keep me warm. You'll need something that zips mob boils tough. Mother ads are credited with transforming a little known business into a household name inside the company. Her wit was also on display. She summed up her guidance for other leaders. This way early to bed early to rise work like hell and advertise. She might have added and work like hell. Until the day you die, she made it to the office on her ninety fifth birthday in March and was still having business discussions shortly before her death on November third according to outsides Schmidt's Pon. Gert Boyle will be remembered for many things among them, her belief which she shared often with younger women that a woman could do anything and also her conviction that older workers are assets in the workplace. Indeed, in her nineties, she wrote perhaps my presence in the office offers a message that managers liked to put older workers out to pasture. Out. To lunch.

closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former Stocks slammed on slowdown fears

"We begin with breaking news stocks slammed as a major sell-off hits. Wall Street the S. and P. Five hundred posting its biggest two day drop since August August and the selling was widespread all eleven. SNP sectors finishing the day in the red so the question tonight is simple the time to get worried tim well the data seems nice to be getting worse and so we have some important data coming up tomorrow and on Fridays I assume services and we tend to want to believe that this is the more important number as opposed to manufacturing number which everybody Eddie spooked. This is a trade war. That seems to be manufacturing trade war to what extent we get that tomorrow it should be noted that last month's ISM services was they very bullish number which had the markets reverse a two day plunge just like the one we've had when people thought okay here we go but you also had. ADP which showed that the labor market ser- ser- it could be if you look at the kind of three month average on jobs on ADP were down about twenty five thousand over the twelve month but not much as changed yet in the labor market yeah carrying you said last night thank you were getting worried. You're more worried run relative basis. Are you even more worried today. I'm a I'm a little more worried today but I'm starting to see. There's a lot more fear in the market right right. There's a lot more things are starting to feel a little bit a little panicky not a super panic but you know one of the things. I watched really closely as the vix. We had a very big spike in the vix today. I'm actually I think now is not the time to buy volatility. I think it's too far too fast and if anything we have sort of the story the the EU tariff that just came out. If that's sort of that was some Tesla numbers we will get later if that's sort of starts a momentum down now. There's a big down open. I will probably be selling protection into that. I like to look at to buy things when they start to trade an integer some of which I own sadly that are trading and introduce down. I'm going to be looking for some of those to add technically. We were weak. We cut through the fifty cut through the day. I said at the other end of the show. I don't see us doing doing what we did last year. I mean it's too easy so I do think I don't think the worst is over but I think you're okay to dip a little bit on the buy side. You would buy this today. The other day about alter sold it a so so stock specific today thought about buying Roku was on the fence on it things that have been beaten up drastically that are due for a bounce. I think you're okay with so just think about this time. Last year. The was up almost ten percent pity around twenty nine. I'm fifty and no one thought we could go down twenty percent no matter a month and we did and and I don't think anything's too easy when we're talking about selloffs in the market especially when we have a situation where rates are so low and people think it really is the only place to be. They think that US equities is the only place to be relative to what's going on in Europe Asia that sort of thing. I just don't like hearing this trade stuff up moving around. I don't like it floating. I know we've been talking about trade as it relates to China and that is the most important thing that is the economy that's growing six plus percent and when they slow down it reverberates all all over the world but I don't like the fact that we know the data in Germany's been horrible. Okay is practically in a recession and that is the big economy over there so we start talking about this trade war or having the potential to go on multiple fronts. I say to myself you may get your headline that you're waiting for an China trade. PM is the global we're negative. They were the first ones that were negative. They were negative. Were over a year and now for the last two months. You're starting to see that turn so might be. Aus- chasing facing them down at this point. I don't know well I m days. That's terrible news. I mean being the last man standing when we certainly we have the resilience that we have in this economy. Look I mean we talk a lot about credit and people come on save credits. Okay you're not. GonNa see credit. Hold up if you start to really see the job market off because consumer credits going to trickle through but also the corporate credit side. We talked about this bounce. She's numbers by the way if you look at the the High Yield E. T. S. whether you're looking at the H. Y. J. H. Y. it's down two points over the last couple of days not great news so if you look at the two day moves though in a number of sectors including banks banks in two days have taken taken out almost that entire rally twin and China is and has gone down although the healtcare Stephen because the expectation on the low end is actually getting a little bit more. I I also think it's kind of interesting to go back and think about two thousand sixteen which is a very volatile year. There's a lot of stuff going on brexit caused a lot of volatility June July of two thousand and sixteen and into our election and I think we're starting to see just this week. We're seeing politics start to infuse themselves into our market so bit and you know I'm on the air. Today I heard well does that leg down because Bernie's in the hospital and that means that Warren might be the this is stuff that we're going to hear for the next year so it may start to have an impact earning star when there's whenever there's a void of something real fundamental to buy into the markets trade off of whatever you give and do we think that earnings are going to be decent for the third quarter. I mean given what we've had so far Micron Carnival Fedex clorox taking their guidance down today. Delta saying that their costs are higher. I don't know well. I thought Delta is actually a little bit overdone. Yeah I mean but on a day like today. It doesn't really matter things are GonNa get overdone and the pendulum swings very far. I'm interested to see what the banks tell us not so much what happened happened during this past quarter but what they're seeing not just for their own business which is really important obviously for what they they have a great insight into what is happening in the US economy so that we'll be really interesting. you know the autos kind of rolling over. Don't love that either right but I do totally agree with. Steve we need. That's the main something to me. The main piece of data when via stock is what are the fundamentals of the company not not Lauren or who's ahead or what you know and also would also look at. We start off the show. I'm saying we're where. Are we going to be the same way as it's time to buy time to sell last year we had everyone was raising rates or we were on the raising a a higher rate path. Now everyone is on a lower rate because needs are really bad. Here's the thing at a certain point is going to matter. I don't like it doesn't matter now. I don't like the technical setup. I think we're in week since around that three thousand level when we broke down from there my issue. Is that the Fed does not have enough AMMO Komo to fight the next recession unless he uses the balance sheet so once you use the balance sheet. That's a whole nother Pandora's box. That's the only thing we're talking about. Technicals that goes and we're talking about kind of where we are. In the market cycle. I also WanNa talk about positioning which we talk about all the time and ultimately think it's the most important thing and while we've talked about equity investors certainly could be considered underinvested in Agra. We look across retail and institutional. If you look in the data that I'm getting from my prime brokers as it relates to total gross capital at at the balance sheet the size of capital work in other words how much exposure is in the market. We're at ninety fifth percentile for hedge funds for long short hedge funds and other as they may be more net neutral and they you may not be net long in ways that they had in the past but they bigger balance sheet which is dangerous in other words at times of higher risk which whatever you WanNa say about where we are. We have so many more factors out there that could be things to be worried about and the fact that the Hedge Fund community is near what would be seen extreme levels in terms of overall Balaji. I don't like back going into the fourth so in other words if there's if there is a cell situation head for the exits than we see all that money I could actually see guys as things have to change into your and some of these guys might not even make it through this. They'RE GONNA have to be selling some of the crowded winners and you're actually going to see some of the weaker hands and some of the weaker stock to actually achieve catch a bit on short-covering but yeah. I just think you're supposed to simplify during a difficult period right now. You're not supposed to get more complicated and I think that there are guys that have become more complicated. Yeah I just again you know I. I don't think it helps market participants that the president just yelling at everybody all day today all day long that we're on every network you know that sort of thing and I just just think back to two thousand and nine when we were in the throes of just the worst sell off that we've had in a long time and we had a president who was pretty calm. Just you said that sort of thing and I think those are the sorts of things would really be helpful going forward and so I think this is something that you guys better get used to because this is going to happen here on out you on a daily basis as we get into the end of this year and we've had a president has been y'all. Everyone in the market went to all time highs. I think now right now anything Stephen Eighteen market timing is under the president. That's being gay and it went to all time highs under every other. I don't think that's your litmus test. I think what you have to do is dig in starts starts but the point is is that yelling at the Fed in trying to kind of get them to do something that may not be particularly natural says he'll be aware of something. We've been aware of this. We've had a president. You've been complaining about this president for the last four years. We went to all time highs. That's the point I'm making. We haven't done anything he may. He may preside over one of the worst sell off. We've seen in a decade too because the policy is also catching up to. That's a really important point. I slightly moving on what back to to what you're talking about is where politics will inject and where they haven't even mattered think about what we're actually starting to contemplate if you get any change from this administration. None of it is is good. None of is good for the mark is what I'm saying. In terms of what you have in terms of legislation art agent indebted hasn't ranked eighteen months and it hasn't been good for the economy so forget it. I'm I'm not making up. Hold on that from here on out. If you change the prospect of the status quo the market's not gonNA like it one of Wall Street's biggest bulls believes the market is overreacting acting to risk recession fears. Chris Harvey is a head of Equity Strategy at Wells Fargo Securities Chris Great to have you with us on a daylight today. You actually say it might be time to put money to work here on on this back back. What we're looking for is so obviously we saw what the manufacturing did. We'll get is some servicing tomorrow so for in line or less. I would expect the equity market to start to sell off a little a bit more. We get a one two percent sell up then it starts getting interesting twenty-eight.

Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, Brian stuff on more invoke bomb, and you may have heard about it in the news in November of two thousand eighteen six people boarded an elevator at the former John Hancock center in Chicago for the ride down from the signature room bar on the ninety fifth floor to the lobby but one of the cable snapped and the elevator plunged eighty four floors to the eleventh floor amazingly, none of the passengers had to be hospitalized. And there were no serious injuries. The passengers thought they had only fallen a few floors. However, they did have to wait three hours to be rescued by firefighters because there were no openings between the floors. So how was it possible? That one of the worst things that can happen to people in an elevator occurred and everyone survived elevators in the real world. Have so many safety features that the kind of thing you see in movies where villain cuts a single cable disaster. Ensues usually never happens. Here's the breakdown. First. Let's look at those cables and a cable elevator system. Steel cables bolted to the car loop over a sheaves achieve is a pulley with a grooved rim surf. Office at the top of the elevator. Shaft the sheaves grooves grip the steel cables. So when an electric motor rotates, the shave the cables, moved to the cables that lift the car are also connected to a counterweight which hangs down on the other side of the sheaf the car and the counterweight both right along on steel rails. Each elevator cable is made from several lengths of steel material wound around one another these cables, very rarely snap. And inspectors look them for wear and tear. But even a steel cable can break. So what happens then almost all pulley? Elevators have multiple cables between four and eight in total. Even if one cable snapped the remaining cables would hold the elevator car up. In fact, just one cable is usually enough. But let's say all the cables did snap. Then. The elevators safeties would kick in safeties are breaking systems on the elevator car that grab onto the rails. Running up and down the elevator. Shaft some safeties clamped the rails. While others drive a wedge into notches in the rails. Typically, safeties are active. Aided by a mechanical speed governor. The governor is poli that rotates when the elevator moves when the governor's spins too fast. The internal force activates the braking system, even if the cables and the safeties all failed. Sure, you would be plummeted rapidly. But you wouldn't quite be in freefall friction from the rails along the shaft and pressure from air underneath the car would slow the car down considerably though, you would feel a bit lighter than normal. Unim- packed the car would stop, and you would keep going slamming you into the floor, but two things would cushion that blow. I the elevator car would compress air at the bottom of the shaft as it fell just as a piston compresses air in a bicycle pump. The air pressure would slow the elevator car down second most cable. Elevators have a built in shock absorber at the bottom of the shaft typically a piston in an oilfield cylinder that would cushion the impact to with all of these features in place. You would have an excellent chance of surviving. Any elevator mishap in the case of the Chicago. Elevator incident. Once the firefighters figured out where the passengers were the crew put up struts to make sure the elevator did not drop any further, then they broke through a wall. Forced to the elevator door open and put a ladder into the elevator to help people up and out. Chicago fire department spokesman Larry Langford told the Chicago Tribune, we don't like to have to go through walls, unless it's absolutely necessary. The only other way to get to the elevator would have been ropes from the ninety seventh floor and that would not be safe. We don't come down like Batman. So we must go through the wall. You sometimes hear that you should jump immediately before an elevator crashes. So that you would be floating at the second of impact would that work? Now, even if you could perfectly time such a leap it wouldn't help. Let's say you and the elevator are falling at a hundred miles per hour. That's around one hundred sixty one kilometers per hour. Unless you have some superhero powered legs when you jump up in the elevator. You'd still be going about one hundred miles per hour. And then you would hit the ground at one hundred miles per hour. Just like the elevator. Your best bet would be to live flat on the floor. This would stabilize you and spread out the force of the impact. So that no single part of your body would take the brunt of the blow. Today's episode was written by Kathryn Witt, born and produced by Tyler for more on this. A financial strategy relevant to everyone

"Okay. What's happening today? Well, here's a strategy that is relevant to folks, especially now because we've seen some market highs. We just hit a record high here in the S and P what a week or so ago two weeks something like that little while back. Yeah. So, you know, here we go again, it's like the ninety fifth record high in the last eight years, whatever it is. Yeah. Eight years. I don't know couldn't be because we didn't really go back to the high until like two thousand wonder where the s&p recovered, but it took till like what two thousand twelve something like that. I don't remember it took some time. But anyway, we've seen a bunch of record highs over the last five six years recall it. And this means likely that your bucket number three, or your equity portfolio is somewhat higher than you had, you know, maybe count on all those years ago, and it usually maybe looking at this on a year-by-year basis at least when you're quote unquote, prophets even though they're only on paper. Are up. Does it make sense to maybe take some of those profits off the table and save them for when profits aren't so good, professor Plum, this technique called value averaging. And as I said last week when we tease this topic. It goes against instinct human instinct that we have the rational brain says. Yes, you should be doing this. Yes. Yes. Yes. The emotional side, which often takes over investing says why in the world what I ever consider trimming off something that's been growing like a weed over the last seven or eight years what because we want to trim. The weeds back win is the best time to sell something. When you have a very good profit. Now does that mean that it's going to not go up further, and you could have had a better profit? Well, it could keep going up. But it could also go down never again on paper. John talked about paper gains paper gains are wonderful, but they can turn around and go the other way before you lock in the real game. You can't spend paper games. You can't protect paper gates paper gains mean that I bought it at X, and it's currently showing as why which is why being a higher number. But until I actually sell it. I don't know what that why is going to be in the white could be higher or lower tomorrow could be higher or lower next month. So when should we be looking at potentially selling something when we have better than expected profits? Do you think there are people out there? I'm sure you probably have seen although the people you work with you may have dirty discussed this concept of value, averaging for there have to be a lot of people out there who have maybe done this bucket strategy more on their own, and they look and they see that they are. You know, how we see your house rich? They are bucket. Three rich. In other words, it's it's far above where they had intended it to be at this particular point in time. Not intended, but expected we all intend our portfolios to do nothing, but go up and up, and we really hope that they do fifteen to twenty percent a year. But that's not the expectation. The expectation is to hopefully average maybe eight nine ten percent a year on average. That's an average sub years. It'll be higher some years. It'll be lower some weeks things. And it's interesting. The the the mindset the behavioral finance side of this. I was speaking with somebody over the weekend. And one of the biggest issues that a financial planner deals with isn't the the financial side of the house. It's a psychological side of the house and helping people work through themselves, and they Billy we saw people who when the market went down earlier in the year, and we had a high in late January, and then it dropped quite a bit in February. March while they were freaked out. They didn't want to sell anything then because it had dropped. And then when it comes back, and they say well when it gets back. We'll do we'll take some cream off the top even though they were a lot higher than they thought. They were going to be at the time. Now, they don't want to sell because the Marcus back a little bit. Yeah. You don't want to sell when it's down. You know, even though you're a lot higher than you still expect. I was up twenty three percent higher than I thought. I would be now I'm only up seventeen percent higher than I thought I would be. So I got to wait till I get back to the twenty three percent level. Well now that a backup twenty four percent. Why would I sell now? It's a matter of and it's it's in all of us. We all liked the idea the think we're gonna make more money. And if you're twenty five thirty you've got twenty years left to run for the portfolio. This probably doesn't matter in any way, shape or form. You're just gonna keep funding it through your payroll deduction, you're going to keep fighting a Roth IRA's, hopefully, you're just going to keep funding funding Byerly by often by buy low it doesn't matter because you've got twenty years left, and you've got the time rise. But when you're getting closer to the time period where you're going to need the money when you get closer to or are in the retirement sector, you just don't wanna see huge drops. You really love seeing the very large gains. But you hate the drug now remember also though, you may only have a third of your money in the portfolio in the long term growth area, the more volatile areas. But also those volatile areas tend to give you the higher returns. At least. That's the goal, right? That you have to accept that volatility. But volatility goes both ways it can go up. Let's take advantage of that. They can go down. Let's protect against that by having a long enough time. Or is it that we don't need to sell when it's down. Yeah. And that's the other half of this too. Which is when it's down you have to have the emotional fortitude to say, this is a great opportunity. I'm going to take some of this cash, and I'm gonna go put it in to get myself back to where I need to be fair. The idea of value averaging is to first and foremost have a plan because you can't value average. If you don't have a plan because you can't value. I don't know where you were expected to be you have to have an expectation and you have to be exceeding expectations or severely. You have to have a goal of plan a strategy. And the mindset that says this is what I expected. Here's what I'm going to do win something other than the expectation that curse, and it happens all the time.
